Part 3 - Creatures

To celebrate week 3 of @klarolineauseason I’ve got my rec list!

All I Need by emeraldvixen

Multichap. Complete. Wolf mates. This 6-part fic is one of my favourites, gotta say. Technically, I suppose Klaus and Caroline are still their canon species, but this fic explores Klaus’ werewolf side in more detail, particularly in relation to mates. There’s also some fantastic smut at the end, as well as action in the middle, where Caroline’s friends try to break the mate bond. Little do they know, a bond like that can’t be broken - not without death anyway.

The Lost Prince and The Eternal Queen by 3tinkgemini

One-shot. Complete. Now this is a fic I don’t see in fic recs often and I don’t understand why because I LOVE it and it is definitely up there on my top 10 fics (mostly because I love anything wolf or pack related but still). Klaus is an Original Hybrid in this, fresh out of Mystic Falls where his attempt to create a hybrid pack (surprise, surprise) failed. Caroline is a werewolf Alpha, with a pack of her own, one who she would protect at all costs, even if it means going up against the most powerful creature to walk the earth - Klaus. Instead of fighting though, Caroline offers Klaus a deal. Live with her pack, let her teach what it means to be a wolf, and if any pack members wish to become a hybrid after his stay, he is free to take them. It’s a brilliant story that explores what Klaus is missing, never having grown up in a pack, never truly been a werewolf, while also portraying a beautiful story of Klaus and Caroline slowly falling for each other.

Burn For Me by Cupcakemolotov / @cupcakemolotov

Two-shot. Complete. Dragon!AU. Caroline is set to marry Tyler to form an alliance between two lands, but her soul has already been marked with another. I always love a good dragon au, and this is great fic to read to satisfy the thirst.

Shoot The Stars by LynyrdLionheart / @lynyrdwrites

In-complete. Y’all need to read this so we can unite and pester the writer for an update (I’m sorry Lenna but it’s true I NEED an update it’s way too good 😭😭😭). Caroline is an assassin that’s turned over a clean slate, living anonymously, and unknown to her, Klaus is an alien. Hilarity ensues. This has some brilliant moments with the other Mikaelsons too, and the end to the first part is amazing. Caroline is a badass and I stan.

F*ck You Flowers by LynyrdLionheart / @lynyrdwrites

One-shot. Complete. Caroline is an empath, while Klaus and his family are still Original vampires. Finn Mikaelson walks into Caroline’s flower shop wanting a bouquet that accurately says F*ck You, needing it to give to Klaus for leaving him in a box for a thousand years. Caroline complies, intrigued. Klaus, unsurprisingly, is not amused. It’s a great fic, and as always, this writer infuses a certain level of humor into their fics that I adore. Highly recommend. Had to open the link to refresh my memory, and you know what? I’m gonna go read it again. It’s ace.

The Howling by BelleMorte180 / @bellemorte180

Two-shot. Complete. My favourite of Erica’s fics. Another wolf mate fic, but with a twist. Klaus, an alpha of a visiting pack is not pleased to find out his mate was harmed by another before he even met her, and harmed by a member of her own pack nonetheless. (Or, a.k.a includes some good old Damon murder at the end, werewolf style). It’s a wonderful, beautiful fic, which has Klaus and Caroline as wolf mates, burning for each other, but also explores the werewolf culture side of it - the idea of ‘The Howling’ is amazing and so original. Come scream at it with me.

Sing the Song of the River Styx by Certified_Ceraunophile / @certifiedceraunophile

One-shot. Complete. Hades x Persephone AU. This fic left me shattered in a million pieces at the sheer devotion and love Klaus and Caroline have for each other. Klaus creates and entire freakin’ constellation for Caroline. Like. COME ON. Srishti has forever ruined my expectations for men, let’s just leave it at that.

One-shot. Complete. Another flower shop au, this time with Caroline as a witch. Oh, and Klaus and Caroline are soulmates, with words written on their skin. Great read.

Rule number one of Mystic Falls that everybody should have learned a long time ago: NEVER listen to Damon Salvatore. If Caroline had listened to that rule, she probably would not be in this situation.

Stefan and Damon were going through just about plan 968 of ‘how to turn Elena human’ since the cure had been a hoax and Caroline didn’t even know the logistics of it, she just knew that due to a magical mishap she was now stuck behind an invisible barrier in Klaus’ living room.

“Looks like we’ll be trapped here for a while,” she commented idly to break the tension of the strange situation.

Klaus scoffed. "Due to the fact that this was a plan by Damon Salvatore I'm not bloody surprised."

Caroline snorted. Really, she couldn't disagree with him.

"I don't even know why you still associate yourself with the lot, honestly," he murmured to himself, but due to the limited space she obviously heard.

She scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Because they are my friends! You stick by your friends no matter what but you know, it's something you wouldn't know about."

He growled. "Shut up."

“Come over here and make me," she taunted.

He flashed in front of her, eyes a burning gold. "Well we both know you're not ready for that, Caroline," he drawled out the syllables in her name tauntingly, tucking a strand of her behind her ear.

She scoffed, eyes dark and blazing. "Don't underestimate me."

He frowned but before he could say anything else she had pushed him against the wall and crashed her lips to his. It took him a whole couple of seconds to register the fact Caroline Forbes was currently kissing him and kissing him hard at that, but when he did he kissed her back just as fervently.

Her arms were wrapped around his neck, one hand tugging at the hair on his nape. His hands were just above her ass, he feared if he slid them an inch down she'd pull away — and as much as he loathed to admit it, she was the one truly in control here so if she pulled away he would most likely never get another taste of her heavenly lips.

She pressed herself harder against him, making him moan against her mouth. He felt as she slipped her tongue in his mouth and he was lost to the world, he was sure he was seeing stars in his vision just from having her mouth working her magic on his.

Eventually, Caroline pulled away, struggling to catch her breath but it was nothing compared to the state the Original Hybrid was in.

Klaus was panting heavily, his cheeks flushed and his eyes dazed. He just stood there speechless — Caroline Forbes just kissed the living shit out of him.

She grinned and pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth. "Told you not to understimate me."

Just calling to let you know that I have three options for your centerpieces here at the shop, so if you could just give me a call back and we can figure out a time for you to drop by and look at them, that would be great. I can also email you pictures, but in my experience the colors don't show quite right that way. Anyway, give me a call back," Caroline chirped, rattling off the store's number and hanging up, setting the phone back in the cradle with a sigh. She used to love designing centerpieces for weddings, but since her own marriage had gone sour, it was just a reminder of how happy she had been, and how miserable she was now.

She sighed as the bell above the door tinkled and looked up to see the last person she ever thought would cross the doorway of her shop. Her husband looked as good as ever, his blonde curls a bit messy the way she liked them best, his stubble just beginning to come through enough to be rakishly handsome. Klaus had clearly just come from work, judging by his outfit, and he shoved his hands in the pockets of his trousers as he looked at her, drinking in her face. She frowned, sticking her hands on her hips. "What are you doing here?"

He cleared his throat, walking further into the shop. "I'm here to purchase some flowers, actually."

She narrowed her eyes. Was this some kind of new power play? Was he seeing someone and wanted to rub it in her face? It didn't seem like his M.O. He'd been really careful so far to leave as many doors, windows, and chimneys open as possible for her to come back through if she changed her mind. There had been something comforting about that, that he still wanted her even after she'd bulldozed through mediation with outrageous demands and as many petty shots as she could take. He'd given in to the temptation to respond, of course, but his witty retorts were never personal and infuriatingly tame. It always just made her madder.

But he got sick of it, it seemed like, and now he was going on the offensive, taking shots at her where he knew it would hurt. She hated to be second-best to anyone, hated the idea of not being enough. That was why she'd filed for divorce in the first place, after all. Klaus had put work before her way too many times for it to feel like anything less than him trying to escape her, and sure, maybe she was taking it a little personally, but it felt personal, and she wasn't going to be in a relationship--in a marriage--where she was sleeping alone six out of seven nights a week because he was crashing on the couch in his office!

And now he'd probably found someone naive and young and willing to wait around for him to come home and entertain him when he had little bits of time between meetings, and he'd come to rub it in her face that she wouldn't do that for him. But she wouldn't let him have the satisfaction of seeing her hurt, she decided. She tossed her hair and walked over to the register to wait for him to select a bouquet. "Fine. What do you want?"

He selected a beautiful bouquet of dahlias, zinnias, and miniature vines, one of her favorites that she'd ever designed (of course he was going to ruin that for her too) and brought it to the register. She rung it up, her nails clicking angrily on the register. "Do you want a message with that?" she bit out.

"Yes, actually."

"Do you want it typed and printed, or do you want a blank card to write it yourself?"

"Typed, please, love."

He was going to make her type the stupid letter, too? Her cheeks flushed in annoyance, but she turned to the computer and waited for him to dictate.

"Okay. I'm ready."

"You're the most important thing in my life," Klaus said quietly, his voice tight. She swallowed, glaring at the screen as she began to type. "I've always known that from the moment I met you, and I wish I'd made that clearer to you. I put in my two weeks notice today. I love you, and I was foolish to let you believe even for a moment you weren't worth everything to me."

Her eyes snapped up to look at him, and she felt tears prick at her eyes. Oh, so this new girl was enough for him to finally quit his hellish job? One that he hadn't wanted to give up, even for her? Even when their marriage had been on the line? They hadn't even signed the papers yet, and he already found someone he was that invested in?

That hurt.

He was silent, watching her as she finished typing, and she cleared her throat. "Who should I make it out to?" she asked, going back to glaring at her computer screen. He let out a noise that sounded like a half-laugh-half-scoff, and she turned around to glare at him. "What?"

He was looking at her like she had grown three heads. "My wife," he said, as though it should have been obvious. "You. I left the firm for you."

"But you love that job," she protested. "Klaus--"

"I love you," he said firmly. "And I can find something like that job anywhere else in the city. I will never, ever find someone like you, Caroline."
