Hobie Brown is topnotch because he's forcing people to see 'edgy and mean' isn't enough to be a nonconforminst and that what's actually radical is choosing optimism and kindness with that being your motivation for direct action and activism because you want to make a better world and knowing part of that is going out of your way to be being good to your minority friends since it's people like them you're fighting for as much you are for yourself and also that 'strong and confident' dosen't equal 'masculine' by being a black femme king who serves cunt as his entire existense. And unfortunately a good chunk of the fandom still chooses to ignore his actual messages because they don't to unlearn their internalized biases but it dosen't MATTERRRRRRR HOBIE I LOVE YOU LITTLE MAN,MY BLACK TRANS AND AUTISTIC PUNK TROUBLED BUT GOOD KID REP🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣

The Parallels Between Korsica and Roquefort
So, when I was setting up my plans for Fly-High Rush, things were a bit one-sided in terms of group numbers, so instead of keeping Korsica the same, I decided to swap her and Roquefort. I figured they were similar enough to make a switch work.
But then I realized they were... really similar. Like, very, very similar. The comparisons just kept coming and they didn't stop.
So here we are. Welcome to my Ted Talk.
1. WIND ATTACKS:
Let's get one of the bigger comparison out of the way: both of them fight with wind. Korsica uses it all the time, from turning off generators to putting out fires to kicking Chai's ass. Then there's Roquefort, who throws out little tornadoes during his fight and tries to send Chai flying with his Big Bad Wolf attack several times. That move also requires Korsica specifically to hold it back with her own wind gust. Yeah, not much to say here.
2. Connection to a Vandelay Sibling:
See, this is the point that really got the gears turning in my head. Both of them have a close connection to a Vandelay sibling who saved their lives: Roquefort to Kale, and Korsica to Peppermint.
"I was on my deathbed when Kale saved me. I was smart, but weak. He fixed that." - Roquefort
"Your wound was really bad...We didn't have a choice." - Peppermint "You... saved my life." - Korsica
Not to say Peppermint saved Korsica single-handedly (shout out to Mac and CNMN, the true mvps), but then again, I doubt Kale painstakingly upgraded Roquefort's body piece by piece on his own, so my point still stands. Both Vandelay siblings had a hand in saving their lives respectively, and because of that, you can see the bonds formed between these two duos.
Peppermint tries to be welcoming and reassuring to Korsica when she first comes to after Kale's murder attempt, and Korsica returns that reassurance later on in Mimosa's level. She hasn't even been with the gang for a full mission yet, is probably still getting used to these changes, and she still tries to comfort Peppermint, especially during her "Kale's my brother" reveal.
Not to mention, during the optional conversations in Roquefort's office before you face Kale, Korsica's dialogue is slightly different in terms of topic. Everyone has something to say regarding their own specific character arcs and motivations, but part of Korsica's dialogue is specifically her worrying about Peppermint.
"But I'm a bit worried about Peppermint. This is personal for her." - Korsica "After all we've been through, it might not be easy... but I think she can handle it." - Chai "You might be right about that, but we need to be there for her when she needs it." - Korsica
Now going back to Kale and Roquefort, while their interactions are brief, you can tell that both of them have at least some respect for each other, which is a hell of a lot more than they give to most of the other Department Heads. Especially Kale.
"Zanzo, Stop. Just stop. Even you jumped the shark on this one. IN THE EYE? What the shit?" - Kale to Zanzo (via SPECTRA Hub vlog) "Only one of of four, Korsica? That's not a passing grade." - Kale to Korsica "It better! No slip-ups! And no defects." - Kale to Mimosa and Rekka Versus...
"Why not? I want to see just how angry you can get, if those punks make it in here." - Kale to Roquefort Sure, Kale still lashes out at him, he's not nice all of a sudden, but it feels like such a massive difference. Kale questions why he ever hired Zanzo, he tried to straight up KILL Korsica, and he's harsh enough to Mimosa and Rekka to the point that they flinch. Hell, REKKA of all people flinches twice. But here? Kale trusts Roquefort to handle things, even if he is a bit dismissive with the "you're just a number cruncher" line.
And on the other side of things, Roquefort is not only loyal to Kale, but surprisingly calm and casual around him. Casual enough to correct him and talk back.
"We...shut down the cafe." - Roquefort "When I said close the campus down, I didn't mean THE CAFE!" - Kale "You said close down everything." - Roquefort
The casual tone of voice is palpable. I genuinely think that's the least angry we see Roquefort, except maybe during the Boss Zoom meeting.
And if you want to go the shipping route, yes, shout out to my lesbians, not much to prove there, but... Hey Kale, do you want to explain why you, a confirmed dog person, gave Roquefort a robotic wolf fursuit? YOU WANNA EXPLAIN THAT??? HUH???
3. Similar Personalities:
They're cold, they're direct, and they're aggressive, and despite their rare goofy moments, I feel comfortable saying they're the most serious of the Department Heads.
Excluding the visual aspects (because this point would be null and void thanks to Roquefort fursuit), these two are by far the least hammy of the bosses. Unlike the others, who provide witty banter, plenty of cheesy lines and over-dramatic reactions, the dialogue for these two is rarely comedic or high-energy.
Here's some examples for comparison:
"I like defects. I like how they taste." - QA-1MIL
"So let's get ready to crumble!" - Rekka
Do I even need an example for Zanzo?
"Let's raise the stakes, and turn down the lights!" - Mimosa
"You've had a few hits, but I think it's time we break up the band." - Kale
Compare that to...
"Caught you off guard." - Korsica "I'll make sure you stay down this time!" - Korsica "You cocky LOSER!" - Korsica
"You sure made an entrance, lad. If you've come for me... I'd walk away." - Roquefort "Where's your confidence now, kid?" - Roquefort "I put my stock in futures, but not yours, kid." - Roquefort
The other bosses are willing to taunt and even go along with Chai's goofiness, but these two? Oh, they don't have much time for that. They barely hesitate, and are not holding back in the slightest. Korsica fucking yeets him down a slope, puts him in a headlock, knocks him out, does whatever she can to hold him back from getting to her office, and only pauses briefly to gaze upon his stupidity before whipping her batons out when he busts in. Even after she gets knocked out and sustains, like, 3 different flavors of concussion(5 if you count Chai and the vent hitting her), she gets RIGHT BACK UP! In a way, Roquefort is a bit more lenient, letting Chai into his office once he gets that far... but the "I'm not fucking around" energy is still there. He's like "Oh, you're really that determined? I respect it. Come at me, kid, I'm not fucking scared." And then he proceeds to back that up. He doesn't even bother attacking Chai with his regular form at first (or at all, frankly), he goes from 0 to 100 and refuses to fall somewhere in the middle. And finally, there's one similarity between them personality-wise that gets its own section, that being how...
4. They're Fueled by Anger:
Basically every boss is aggressive in some way, throwing all kinds of things at Chai as he consistently grinds their 30 day chips from anger management to dust, but here's the thing... When I say "fueled by anger", I mean health-wise. These two heal themselves on-screen because of their anger. With Roquefort, this is pretty well established. He constantly says that all Chai is doing is making him angrier, and that so long as he's mad, he won't be stopped, to the point that thousands of pounds of gold getting the drop on him was the only thing that could take him down. During the verse/phase changes, you can see his health bar quickly refill itself each time, and his wolf form model viewer description wraps this all up in a nice, neat little bow with this line: "Powered by Roquefort's own anger, attacking it will only make it more aggressive and powerful." Now, getting to Korsica... I'll only say this one thing. Can we just acknowledge she went from THIS:
Tumblr media
TO THIS:
Tumblr media
ALL BECAUSE CHAI CALLED HER OBLIVIOUS??? SHE'S OUT FOR BLOOD, SHE WANTS THAT TWINK OBLITERATED. "That's it! Now I'm mad!" - Korsica Anger Management? More like Angry Management, am I right?
5. Chai is Out of his Element:
*Holds Chai up by the scarf* Get his ass, you two (I say this affectionately)
Yeah, Chai is severely out of his element with both of them. These two fights are especially humbling for him, albeit for opposite reasons. Korsica is the one boss Chai can't just run in and beat the crap out of, so we see him struggle a lot as he constantly rolls nat 1s on charisma. He and the gang go through, like, three different plans in the span of the whole boss fight; first going with Peppermint's plan to state the facts and stay cool, followed by Chai's plan of trying to tire her out until she's willing to listen, and finally ending with "Fuck it, let's just kidnap her, we'll work on a plan D later". And to top it all off, Korsica throws an entire new addition to the parry mechanic at Chai in the middle of all of this, and he just has to keep rolling with it. For Roquefort's fight, I think it's pretty clear that Chai is TERRIFIED of him. He goes in all cocky and confident, thinking Roquefort's a pushover, and gets humbled QUICK when Roquefort reveals his true nature. You only very briefly see his confident attitude resurface during this fight, like when he knocks Roquefort through the glass pane to his money vault. Otherwise, he's either terrified or exhausted, especially at the end, gritting his teeth and getting ready to keep fighting because he has no other option. Not to mention the others are constantly reassuring and being protective of Chai during the fight via their call-in dialogue. Chai is straight up NOT having a good time. At least he got an unintentional nap after Korsica's fight, dude needs a rest after dealing with Roquefort. Where's SMIDGE when you need him, dude needs an energy drink, stat.
6. Boss Music:
Okay so I am NOT well-versed in musical vocabulary so like... bear with me on this. Hopefully this is coherent. Anyways, Negotiation and The Fizzith just... have the same vibe to me. Yes, I'm mostly focusing on The Fizzith, I believe in Streamer Mode Supremacy. First of all, I guess I can start off by saying that they're the only bosses with pure instrumentals for their tracks, with everyone else having lyrics in theirs. Second of all, both of their song formats just sound so... similar to me? Idk how to describe it, but like... They both start with a dramatic build up as they instill the fear of God in Chai, with Roquefort having that iconic classical music "DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUN" intro and Korsica having a shorter, but still just as powerful, build up as she jumps up and whips her batons out. This is then followed by, like, a slightly softer and steadier follow up as it proceeds with the rest of the intro cutscene, as Roquefort leaps over Chai and Korsica turns down Chai's offer to talk. Then the tension gradually grows as the fight goes on, with each phase adding another instrument or two to make things more intense. The Fizzith is already a lot more intense than Negotiation at the start, but you can still hear the build up with each phase for both. And then finally, there's a small "calm before the storm" section, aka where Chai almost talks Korsica down, and when Roquefort is amping up for his final Big Bad Wolf attack. Roquefort's goes back to a steady sort of beat for a moment, while Korsica's has that quiet clapping and softened tone. This is then followed by an intense, deep, high-energy climax as Korsica starts throwing everything she has at you, and as Roquefort sends this lengthy tornado sound-wave barrage at you. While this format is by no means an original one (hell, I noticed a lot of this in Mimosa's fight too), there's just something about their music that just... feels interconnected to me. Like, if I had to sit down and imagine any other boss having a parry-based boss fight like Korsica's, just going by their boss fight music, I'd go for Roquefort (with Mimosa as a close second). And genuinely, I have actually sat down and imagined it, and it's almost perfect. I'm connecting the two dots, motherfuckers (I'm not connecting shit) I'M CONNECTING THEM-
7. Control Over Security:
And with that, we're now arriving at the much smaller points that I don't have as much to discuss about. So I don't really need to say much about Korsica during this section, for obvious reasons. But as for Roquefort, he IS the one who takes over once Korsica's out of the picture and shit starts to hit the fan. "Kale, I prioritized shielding the tower. Reallocated the budget so not a bug will get in." - Roquefort And both of them are damn good at holding Chai and the others back. Korsica takes 3 whole stages to get to her, keeping you on your toes the whole time with lasers, brakes, and enemies galore. I imagine it would've been difficult as hell to get into the Security Department in the first place if Chai didn't get knocked out and held for questioning. And while his segment is pretty short, all things considered, Roquefort gives it his all to shield Vandelay Tower, locking it down so well that even the smartest members of the TEA-m are stumped. Chai's the only one with an idea, and even that had several hurdles. The second they started connecting to the cannon to launch Chai, security comes rushing in, and he probably would've gotten caged in if SMIDGE didn't unintentionally hold the door open for him. Let's also not forget the big-screened wanted posters, the whole Invaders Must Die cafeteria fight, and that one specific fucking bird that threw Chai around like a hacky sack. THEY. WANT. THIS. TWINK. OBLITERATED.
8. Their Affection Towards Cats:
Korsica has a folder on her computer labeled "CAT Gifs", and Roquefort fawns over 808 when she uses her Steal the Show ability. I rest my case.
9. Accidental Puns:
Okay, so I would've titled this "both like puns", but the jury's still out on Korsica in my opinion. Yeah, Chai says she's lying about hating puns, but to me, she seems like she's... on the fence of liking them. Like, she's hesitantly annoyed by them. But I CAN say that they've both accidentally made a pun. "You think you can strong-arm ME?" - Korsica "Hey, YOU chose to fight-...Wait, you like puns too?" (points at his arm) - Chai "What? No!" - Korsica "Roquefort here. Shut this place down! Protect Finance at all costs! (Heh, I said "costs!") - Roquefort "Ughhhhhhhh." - Peppermint
10. Probably Awakened Something in Players:
It's no wonder how thirsty the fandom is when these two have some of the most charged lines in the game... "You broke my concentration. So how 'bout I break you?" - Korsica "Let's take this somewhere a bit more secure. So we don't disturb the neighbors." - Roquefort Welcome to Hi-Fi Rush, where they appeal to both the "I love the kind of woman who could kick my ass" community and the furry werewolf boyfriend sugar daddy community.
11. Visual/Dialogue Similarities:
Finishing this off is a section dedicated to miscellaneous visual or dialogue similarities that I couldn't fit elsewhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The camera zooms in before I can get a good shot of Korsica actually ON her desk, so standard shot it is.) TOP 10 WAYS TO ENHANCE YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN THE WORKPLACE #1: Jump onto your desk to establish dominance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smug little losers...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
GET FUCKING YEETED
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Man, they even intimidated the camera man, they can't keep it straight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spiky, anime-ass hair/fur. Triangular.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course they have blue eyes and nails and pronouns (ft. Chai living the dream) Also, speaking of blue... maybe it's because both of theirs glow blue, but some of their cybernetics have the same vibe to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mostly just the chest and the arms (since that's all Korsica's got). Maybe I'm just looking too hard but like... the blue tubes connected to the arms, the glowing chest... Okay, I'm running out of red string for my evidence board, moving on. Anyways, not as much to bring up about remaining dialogue similarities, but I still have a few. "Is that a floating cat? Ugh, nothing about you even makes sense!" - Korsica "The numbers are in... and YOU are OUT!" - Chai "Wow. That makes no sense, you idiot!" - Roquefort Behold Chai's natural ability to deal psychic damage by not making any sense whatsoever. And finally... mission plan dialogue. "Mission report. Just...go up." - Peppermint "Up?" - Chai "Up." - Peppermint "That's it?" - Chai "Looks like Korsica's in her office, and it's on the top floor. Hence, "up"." - Peppermint
"Chai, you're doing it! The Tower is unguarded. We're headed your way." - Korsica "Chai! Roquefort's office is a couple floors above you. Get up there and kick his ass!" - Peppermint When in doubt: go up.
So in conclusion...

Hi-Fi Rush: a rebellious, punk, major piss at the current Game Industry.
It's a simple promise, really. One we've all wanted at some point during our childhood or teenagehood: We'd imagine a scene in our head. A fight, a conversation, going from point A to point B, anything, to the beat of the music we'd be listening to. Don't lie, I know you've done this, and all of us wished for that to happen in real-life in some way, shape or form. Hi-Fi Rush tell you from the get go it will deliver on that front and realize your dream, as almost every single aspect of the game is tied to the rhythm of the OST.
Tumblr media
We'd imagine a scene in our head [...] to the beat of the music we'd be listening to.
You have an rhythm indicator at all points, but it's not just the music that guides you: The ennemies talk and move to the beat, the environment moves to the beat, your character's idle stance is dancing to the beat, all of that to condition you to what the game wants from you. And that suffices to immediately bring satisfaction to the player. Press button to the beat, game rewards you for it. You have a weak and fast attack, a slow and powerful attack, a parry, a dodge and that is all that you need to play the game. No need for gear with stats that you don't understand that will give a false sense of progression like in more recent productions. You will feel yourself getting better by just playing along.
Tumblr media
No need for gear with stats that you don't understand
And even so, you don't have to play along. Even if you choose to disregard the main gimmick, the game will still be beatable like a regular beat 'em all as the game comes with a wide array of accessibility features and easier difficulties that let everyone enjoy the show. Now, this is formula unapologetically taken from the Devil May Cry series (understandably so when the game's lead designer is the same as the original DMC & Bayonetta, games that defined this specific genre of beat 'em all gameplay): It will encourage you to play along however, and the further you'll advance, the more the game with ask of you, without ever being out of your reach as a player and the more it will reward you for succeeding, not through materials or loot, but with the feeling of having done something really fucking cool. Inspiration from it's big brothers doesn't stop there, however. Tango Gameworks' secret baby pays hommage ludically, but also aesthetically to the games that came way, way before.
Tumblr media
Tango Gameworks' secret baby pays hommage ludically, but also aesthetically to the games that came way, way before.
From the moment you turn it on, you can see the bright colors, the bubbly character design and vibrant personality the game exhudes, the one you'd get from entering the room of a 16 year old teenager during the 2000's. The pop-punk aesthetic, mixed with a refined cel-shaded artstyle won't fait to remind you of Dreamcast games of old, like Jet Set Radio or Space Channel 5, games where the music also were focal points of interest. We've gone through the Devil May Cry influence already, but we can feel it in the gameplay loop of linear levels that are still large enough for exploration, (with all the little secrets and challenges and enemy rooms along the way) and the control scheme itself as well, hell the even has game has a Style Gauge, the signature mechanic of the DMC series. The cast of characters feel like they've come out of an Edgar Wright movie, and that Chai, the main protagonist would fit right along the likes of Shaun from Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim. And lastly, the whole rhythm schtick can definitely string that Guitar Hero chord somewhere. All the game's I've cited were games of the 2000's and 2010's generation of games. All of these games were experimental products of their time that carry all the youth, innocence and simplicity of bygone times, for both the player and the industry. Hi-Fi Rush does its best to recapture that feeling and pay its respects to it.
Tumblr media
The main protagonist would fit right along the likes of Shaun and Scott Pilgrim
A trend that carries over to the music as well. Though mostly original works by Reo Uratani (Monster Hunter Series, Ultra Street Fighter II) and Shuichi Kobori (Metal Gear Solid Series, The Evil Within), Hi-Fi Rush continues to borrow from millenials' teenagehood by featuring groups like Nine-Inch-Nails, the Black Keys, Number Girl, or even The Prodigy. Number Girl in particular must be the most niche, underground group to be selected here. It's one of the pillars of Japanese Indie Rock, and the main inspiration of groups like Asian Kung-Fu Generation (you know, the ones that pulled that off.), whereas The Prodigy was featured in a late segment of the game that is a nice strong the the best video game level ever made with how on point and cathartic it feels to go through, and how well it delivers on the whole game's promise. Aside from the licensed tracks, the rest of the OST nails the spot it aims to with its constant 120 BPM that goes from Alt Rock to Jazz Fusion to even Classical Music. With the music being the centerpiece of basically every aspect of the game, it was paramount for it to deliver an enjoyable, non-repetitive experience, and it does so by the use of dynamic music, where it'll adapt depending on the current state of the game (exploration, combat, cutscene, etc.). And despite the referencial tone of its presentation, and the impressive audio design necessary for a beat 'em all/rhythm hybrid game, Hi-Fi Rush's actual production team was rather small. It has all the components of a big triple-A release yet managed to deliever all of that with a rather small team in comparison. Crazier yet, the game had basically no marketing campaign at all, with the developers showing the game for the first time ever in a relatively random livestream, and releasing it right after, betting a cheaper price-tag, gamepass inclusion and word-of-mouth to boost its sales.
Tumblr media
Hi-Fi Rush continues to borrow from millenials' teenagehood
A crazy plan that only made me think that I was being sold a CD by an indie group on the streets, but it turned out to be pretty well-produced in the end. All of this sounds crazy, all of this is crazy, unexpected from both Bethesda & Microsoft, and would be deemed a guaranteed failure should you pitch that to any kind of executive in a suit and tie. But that crazy plan actually worked, with the game reaching 2 million players by it's first month of release, with some citing it as "Perfect until proven otherwise". And you can't help but feel that part of all of this was intentional. As if the game itself was screaming to the current status quo of the game industry to invest millions in marketing, trying to equate hollywood in prestige and production value, and its disregard for the conditions of ethics and focused vision, to go fuck itself.
The main antagonistic force in Hi-Fi Rush is, quite literally, a corporation. The levels include a factory, a laboratory, an expo, and the bosses are the heads of the departments you'd expect from any tech corportaion. It's a business, through and though, just like what the game industry is. So then you start to look at it through that lens. And you can see how on the nose it happens to be: The head of production is a ruthless ball of anger obsessed with pumping product at maximum capacity, at all times, without any consideration for it's employees (which are, well, literally robots, but you get the gist). The head of R&D is an evil scientist with ambitions ambitions that go way beyond of the scope of what is actually asked of him, spending money loosely to quell his ego-fueled "vision". Marketing, in illusions of grandeur, puts on a literal show where they put themselves in the center spotlight in-lieu of what they are supposed to sell, the head accountant will do anything for profit, even if it means using underhanded tactics and cutting essential costs, and of course, the CEO's main motivation, is find the most convoluted and impractical way to sell more product. All aspects are common issues found in way too many recent studios. Some of you may have thought of names of industry veterans tied to similar problems in the past (or present).
Tumblr media
The main antagonistic force in Hi-Fi Rush is, quite literally, a corporation. The game doesn't hide its criticism of the industry, or its self-awareness as a game. It's humour go from subtle metatext to breaking the fourth wall with the finesse of a wrecking ball.
Given all of these elements, and the game's development history of a timid production squeezed in parallel to an expected release, that has gone against all expectations established by the studio and the publisher, one can only wonder if John Johanas, the director behind all of it, didn't have a bit of resentment with how the current video game industry turned out to be. He's already stated in the game's first demonstration that it was a "dream game of his, that he thought about way, way back." and his admiration for past works, and a past time, can be observed both in surface, and more subtle ways.
Intentional or not, Hi-Fi Rush defies the status quo with a bold, confident, stylish neon explosion of stellar gameplay & nostalgic yet fresh presentation that brought me back to easier, simpler, more fun times with video games as a whole. It's one that I'll remember fondly for years to come and that I hope will, just like it's predecessors, gain fame in the minds of people slowly but surely.

[ trans male, he/him, elliot fletcher , twenty-four ] i can’t be sure, but i think i just saw GAVIN DONOVAN drive onto the parkway. don’t they know we’re not supposed to be driving on that haunted road right now? maybe it has to do with the fact that they’re so +PLACID and -GRIM that makes them feel AMBIVALENT about everything going on. i guess we could also chalk it up to the fact that they’re always reminding me of STAYING UP UNTIL 7AM READING UNSOLVED MYSTERIES, THE CRUNCH OF FALL LEAVES, AND CHAI LATTES. either way, i hope they get back safely. [ winter, he/him, 26, est ]

HEADCANONS
gavin has a twin brother that he doesn’t quite see eye to eye with. the two have such varying personalities that neither of them can keep up with one another.
a reed native, through and through. though, he believes his heart belongs anywhere but there, he can’t bring himself to leave the place that he grew up in.
out of his family, he is an absolute wild child and did a total of zero things that his family had hopes for. fancy college? no thanks. seeing things through? out of the question. settling down with a nice person? no!
gavin is a terrible influence on his younger sister and would often drag her into his antics.
he once got pulled over for reckless driving and speeding—hitting nearly 100mph.
he may or may not have been arrested at least twice due to his explorations, both times for trespassing.
being nice? never met her!
he prefers to have a small circle of close friends, rather than many.
gav has probably never had a real, solid significant other that wasn’t just a one night stand or that he broke up with after a week or two. he just cannot commit to anything ever.
he spends a lot of his time now trying to perfect the most amazing hot tea, even though he only likes two flavors.
he won’t tell you but if you catch him staring at the sky, he’s a huge astrophile.
he’s a giant mama’s boy, through and through. he’s always bringing his mother snacks or gifts in appreciation for her or just because.
he learned to stand up for himself early on against anyone who tried to mock him or bring him down.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
roommates, coworkers, friends, family members, past flings, new flings, ride or dies, true crime enthusiasts, other urban explorers, enemies, fr anything!!

Earth-82 Teams, Part I
i actually made this post forever ago but i decided to remake it, since i’ve since changed some backstories around!
The Justice League of America (Founders)
Bruce Wayne (Batman) - Bruce witnessed his parents’ death when he was seven years old and after that he was put into the custody of Alfred Pennyworth (his family’s butler) and Leslie Thompkins (a doctor friend of Thomas’s). During his college years, Bruce sought out training so that he could eventually return to Gotham and attempt to eradicate crime. During this time, he joined the League of Assassins for a while and fell into a brief relationship with Talia al Ghul. He became Batman at 23 and adopted Dick Grayson a year later.
Clark Kent | Kal-El (Superman) - Kal-El is the only biological son of Jor-El and Lara-El (nee Lor-Van), who was born during Krypton’s last days. Jor and Lara sent him and his older adopted brother Val to Earth, with the hope that they would be taken in by a human family who would raise him well. When they landed they were found by Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent (nee Clark), a childless couple. Martha convinced Jonathan that they should adopt the two boys, they eventually chose to give them the human names Clark Joseph Kent and Val Harold Kent, raising them as normal humans, despite their strange origins. He became Superman at 22, a few months after being employed at the Daily Planet.
Diana, daughter of Hippolyta (Wonder Woman) - Diana, Princess of Themyscira, was Queen Hippolyta’s and General Phillipus’s oldest daughter. Made from clay, Diana is one of the results of multiple goddesses deciding to give Hippolyta her wish to have a child. Diana grew up semi-isolated on Paradise Island, surrounded by the Amazons but lacking company her own age, other than her twin sister Nubia. She was almost three thousand years old when Steve Trevor landed on Themyscira. After a series of challenges that she won, Diana was chosen as Champion of the Gods and left Themyscira with Steve. She helped end WWI but didn’t return to Themyscira at that point, because she had fallen in love with Steve. She stayed with him until he died, before returning to Paradise Island. She did this several more times and at one point brought a young orphaned baby girl back with her to Themyscira. Hippolyta chose to adopt the girl and raised her as Diana’s youngest sister. Diana chose the name Donna, in honor of a fallen friend. Diana became known as the Wonder Woman in certain conspiracy and history circles around the time of the Gulf War.
Arthur Curry | Orin (Aquaman) - King of Atlantis, Arthur is the son of Atlanna, the former Queen of Atlantis, and Tom Curry, a human lighthouse keeper. He was raised in the surface world but was informed of his Atlantean heritage at a young age. His father got sick when Arthur was fifteen and, afraid, Arthur fled to Atlantis. Once there, he learned his mother was believed to be dead and that her husband (Orvax) had been made king. Arthur was welcomed to the kingdom, as a member of the royal family. Arthur was there for two months before Orvax was killed by a rampaging sea monster and the Council of Atlantis was split about who should inherit the throne, but ends up choosing his younger half-brother Orm, with Nuidis Vulko as his advisor. At first, Arthur seemed welcome at Orm’s side, but he was soon informed by a mute servant that Orm planned to have him killed. The servant, an Atlantean mutant named Dolphin, helped him escape and took him to the stronghold of the rebellion that she was a member of. He, with the help of the growing rebellion led by Mera of Xebel, overthrew Orm and Arthur - now known as Orin throughout the kingdom - took his place on the throne.
Kendra Muñoz-Saunders (Hawkgirl) - Kendra is the reincarnation of Chay-Ara, an Egyptian priestess of Isis who - alongside her lover, Prince Khufu, and a priest of Hathor, Hath-Set - found Thanagarian nth metal, which turned them into Thanagarian-human hybrids and made it so they would reincarnate each time they die. This lifetime Kendra is an archaeologist, along the vein of Lara Croft. On her twenty-first birthday, she received her first memory of her life as Chay-Ara and has since retrieved many more of both Chay-Ara’s and her other past lives.
Barry Allen (The Flash II) - Barry Allen was destined to become the Flash, not that he knows this. When he was eleven years old Eobard Thawne traveled back in time from the twenty-fifth century and murdered his mother before disappearing again. Barry’s father was blamed for his wife’s murder and imprisoned for the crime, despite Barry’s protests. Barry was adopted by Jay and Joan Garrick, old friends of his parents. Barry is a certifiable genius and managed to graduate high school at sixteen. Barry went through college and got a degree in biochemistry and could have gone farther and become a renowned scientist but instead chose to become a CSI for the CCPD. Barry became the second Flash (though for about six months he was known only as the Scarlet Speedster) when he was twenty-two, due to a lightning strike which hit him and caused him to crash into a bookshelf of chemicals. Unknown to him, the lightning was actually the Speed Force choosing him.
Dinah Lance (Black Canary II) - Dinah is the eldest daughter of Larry and DeeDee Lance, born with a dominant metagene. The metagene activated during a traumatic childhood experience when she almost fell from a great height but managed to stop herself from hitting the ground with a powerful scream. Dinah grew up in Gotham City with her best friend, Zee Zatara. She was very close with her mom’s best friends, John Zatara and Ted Grant, seeing them as her uncles. When Dinah turned eighteen years old, she left Gotham and moved to Seattle, where she started college, joined a (pretty good) punk band, and became known as the “Lady in Black” - a vigilante that stopped muggers and rapists with a single scream and a few well-placed kicks. Little did Dinah know that she was following in the footsteps of her mother, the first Black Canary.
Zee Zatara (Zatanna) - Zatanna is the daughter of Giovanni “John” Zatara, a golden-aged superhero called the Magician who had been a member of the JSA and was capable of some magic (a descendant of the Homo Magi), and Sindella, one of the last pure Homo Magi. Zee was born with magical potential the likes of which few could compare. Due to John being close friends with DeeDee Lance and Thomas Wayne, Zee grew up as a friend of Dinah Lance and Bruce Wayne. John decided to move to Europe when Zee was ten years old and while Zee lost contact with Bruce, she stayed close to Dinah. During her time in Europe, John sought out magicians to help train Zee. When she was eighteen, Zee decided to leave Europe (and her on-again-off-again boyfriend John Constantine) and move to Las Vegas to try and get a start as a stage magician, following in the footsteps of her father.

SOME LISTS BY DINA HORNREICH
In a not-so comprehensive (mostly desultory) manner I have thrown this list of current zeitgeisty kinds of things that I encountered in one way or another that had various compelling bits, chunks, and other substantial nuggets (if not their complete entirety) of a musical persuasion that provided something engaging, amusing, enlightening, challenging, discordant, or otherwise worthwhile for my freaky mind, body, and soul to chew on in this last year of 2019. There are always tons and tons of things that I missed and/or never got to (but always meant to) so not exhaustive whatsoever. ●     Radio 1190AM KVCU (local station)
And to go full circle around in the weird miasmic disorientations of blogs/zines, and every tool in between...I could mention the writers at Bust, Bitch, Pitchfork, even… DAGGER. But credit for discoverability also includes the vending platforms of Spotify/Bandcamp/Apple Music/Soundcloud themselves (and their haunted algorithms) as well as musicians’ various social media counterparts (which may or may not include their publicists) on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. (and where does YouTube fit in exactly?) which means the industry will eventually eat itself. Happy New Year, ladies and germs. Who knows what the next decade will bring? Whatever it may be, let it be progress rather than random changes for no apparently good reasons.

Ahogyan nekem is adnak tippeket mások listái. Köszi mindenkinek a közös gondolkodást!

Sky Ferreira Returns With an uncompromising vision and the studio hours to back it up, the enigmatic singer is back with a new single—and a promise that her first album in six years will be worth the wait.
So, what’s Sky Ferreira been doing all this time? Well, for the last 35 minutes or so, she’s been in the bathroom.
“I’m so sorry,” she says when she finally emerges, eyes wet, arms full of winter layers. It’s a late-February afternoon at New York City’s Russian Tea Room, the fabled blini-and-caviar haunt of candy-red banquettes and eternal Christmas ornaments where Madonna once worked the coat check. About a half hour ago, the 26-year-old singer turned up for our afternoon-tea reservation only to disappear in an immediate whorl, as if a czarist vortex sucked her into the basement. What she had thought was an asthmatic flare-up, she now explains, was actually a pretty severe anxiety attack. A panicked twinge remains in her expression, like the distant memory of tasting a lemon. In town from Los Angeles for three days, she tells me, “I’ve been anxious to the point that I haven’t slept at all.”
It’s a nerve-wracking moment for Sky, a pop artist, actor, and model who’s lately been keeping a low profile. This is partly because she seems to find the social contract of the PR exchange stressful, but also because she doesn’t want to suck up all the air before she gets a chance to breathe. “You really can get sick of someone’s face,” she says, as only someone who has loaned their own to Jimmy Choo and Calvin Klein could. “I don’t see the point of doing a bunch of photoshoots or press when I don’t have anything out.”
The fact that she hasn’t had anything out might be the biggest stress of all. Signed to Capitol Records at 15, Sky spent years in teen-pop A&R purgatory—groomed as a naughty-girl-next-door type with mall-Shakira hair and prefabricated singles with names like “Haters Anonymous” and “Sex Rules” (“We are animals/No matter what we deny/Our bodies strong, like magnets” are actual words she sang)—only to have her minders decide she wasn’t worth the trouble and shelve her long-promised full-length debut. Rather than give up, she used money she’d earned modeling and finished the album without their help.
Released in October 2013, Night Time, My Time was a rare major-label triumph of craft over product, a purposeful barrage of seething recriminations coated with ’90s-grunge textures and ’80-pop incandescence. It sounded like “My So-Called Life”’s Angela Chase mainlining John Hughes films and channeling her existential anguish into a record—except Night Time was the vision of a 2010s 21-year-old, and the truths were all hers.
The right people loved it. In the spring of 2015, Sky announced her second record’s name was Masochism and promised its first single that summer. The summer came and went, then the fall, and some winter too. On that New Year’s Eve, she addressed the delay obliquely on Instagram (“I refuse to put out something that isn’t honest”) and promised “in 2016 you will hear it.” In 2016, you did not, and now it’s 2019, and, still, no album. At this point, she can’t post online without some commenters popping up to heckle, “where’s the album sky” or “MASOCHISM!!?” or “still waiting,” like they’re hungry people rage-texting Seamless.
These impatient fans aren’t alone in their enthusiasm. “She’s one of those beautiful, rare people who can probably do anything,” says Debbie Harry, who’s had Sky open for Blondie. “If there’s anybody I would ever be jealous of, it would be her.”
Naturally, all of this—the anticipation, the unfulfilled promises, the time lapsed since her last release—is adding to the pressure she puts on herself. She feels like she has to explain. “It wasn’t by choice.” It wasn’t creative paralysis, nor was it a creative hiatus. “I wasn’t just taking time for myself the last five years.” During that time, she landed a half dozen movie roles, but she says she didn’t decide to focus on acting instead. “I never stepped away from music.” She alludes to vague external hindrances: “I’ve been at the mercy of people the last few years”; “gatekeepers”; “the rug pulled out under me”; a “someone at my label” who undid the generous arrangement she had to work with Kanye West musical director Mike Dean; and the very real issue of a young woman telling men what she wants and not settling for less. Then the labyrinthine nature of her production process is, as you’ll see, akin to playing charades blind-folded while riding a dog, and everyone else guesses with kazoos. Plus, she’s a perfectionist. Obsessive. She’ll do 800 takes. She’ll consider every option—and then she’ll consider it again.
But the primary reason it’s taken so long: Sky doesn’t just want her new songs done, she wants them to be good. By good, she means, executed the way she intended, no matter how long she waited to find the right violinist. Properly mixed so they don’t accidentally sound like pop-punk in the car, because “someone puts some shit on my voice” and she forgot to play them in an Uber. (Sky never learned to drive.) Songs that know their place in the broader pop continuum, not what’s hot on streaming. “I’m not looking for ‘a moment,’” she says. “I’m looking for a career—and real careers, you build them.”
She’s deemed two songs good enough to share with me. The first single, “Downhill Lullaby,” is a five-and-a-half-minute, goth-noir, chamber-pop piece—with strings!—that could have easily closed an episode of the revived “Twin Peaks.” (The association may be deliberate: Sky appeared in the show’s 2017 return, deeply admires its director, David Lynch, and the series’ music supervisor, Dean Hurley, produced the song alongside her.) Another forthcoming track, tentatively titled “Don’t Forget,” is a new wave time warp, a lovely bit of nostalgia therapy for people who were never there—even if it is, according to Sky, “about burning down houses.”
By now we’re settled into a booth, one Sky has selected in the empty part of the restaurant, far away from her manager and publicist, who’ve come along to chaperone. Her natural espresso roots have outrun her hair’s blonde highlights, and her dark T-shirt reads “CHICAGO METAL MANIA.” We’ve managed to order tea by asking the waiter to bring what he likes (a nice, orangey, spicy chai) and then momentarily horrify him when Sky asks if, instead of sending the teeny triangular sandwiches with mayonnaise back to the kitchen (she hasn’t touched them, and mayo makes her gag), we can give them to someone who’s homeless. “I’ll get you the ones without mayonnaise,” the waiter says, taking them away.
“I don’t have a back-up plan,” Sky says. “I never have. I don’t have an education. I don’t know how to, like, play music in the [traditional] sense. I’m socially awkward and stuff—I couldn’t really do a lot of other jobs either,” she says. “Literally, there’s no other option for me. So this has to work.”
There are many Sky Ferreiras. There’s Sky the model, a Hedi Slimane muse who’s walked the runway for Marc Jacobs and perfected a glare so haunted the Bates Motel must be jealous. There’s Sky the actor, who played a key supporting role in director Edgar Wright’s big-studio heist flick Baby Driver, but doesn’t have an agent. There’s Sky the live performer, who battles stage fright, but who also opened a 2014 Miley Cyrus arena tour, fell down an elevator shaft on night three, and still took the stage the next day.
There’s also the Sky here at the Russian Tea Room, whose left dimple comes as a surprise because, come to think of it, you’ve rarely seen photos of her smiling. The Sky who shouldn’t eat gluten because of an autoimmune condition, but doesn’t really tell people about it because it sounds like bullshit. The Sky who’s watched enough “Game of Thrones” to see her pets’ personalities reflected in the show’s characters. (For the record, her cat Egg would be a Lannister, while his brother Squirrel would be from the North.)
This Sky speaks in em dashes. It’s less that she loses her train of thought, and more that her thought train is screeching onto a new track. Sometimes you’re right there with her, but other times you’re watching the conversation from a distance like a detached caboose that just kept going straight. “I know I keep going in circles,” she says, “but my mind kind of always does that—spins.”
You don’t interview this Sky as much as steer her, but first you listen. “I’ve always been really shy,” she says, six minutes in. “I was actually mute for years when I was a kid.”
Little Sky Tonia Ferreira hummed along to the radio before she could talk. Raised around Los Angeles, mostly Venice Beach, her young parents split when she was a baby. Her dad tended bar, sometimes with her in tow, and when his roommates got cable, she devoured MTV. “I always hung out with a lot of adults,” she says. “I was, like, one of those kids.”
Being one of those kids meant she didn’t know how to talk to the kids who knew how to talk with each other. She was bullied constantly. She also had trouble with numbers and spelling—she suspects she’s dyslexic, but never got tested—and for a while, was so unhappy, she stopped talking altogether. “I had really long hair, didn’t speak, and had dark circles around my eyes,” she says, describing herself as a child. “I looked kinda feral.”
As the story goes, Sky’s first-grade classmates didn’t know she could talk until she sang “Over the Rainbow” in school. “As long as I can remember, I’ve felt the most like myself when I was singing,” she says. (Roughly 18 years later, she covered the Wizard of Oz ballad at David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption, and the director still raves about her version, telling me, “It was incredible. So beautiful.”)
She lived with her grandmother, who worked as a hairdresser. One time when Sky was around 7, she sang for one of her grandmother’s clients. Impressed, the man suggested she join a gospel choir. The man was Michael Jackson. So she did. Jackson also gave a 9-year-old Sky some grown-up advice that’s shaped her approach to art and music ever since: “He was like, ‘Don’t focus on things that are just around you—you need to look back to the history of music.’ And that’s what I did.”
Yes, Sky went to the Neverland Ranch—“a lot.” She also went to Jackson’s other houses. No, she didn’t witness anything untoward. “It wasn’t just because I was a girl,” she tells me, a few days before the controversial HBO documentary Leaving Neverland aired. “I was around a lot of kids.”
Yes, she’s grown hesitant to talk about her grandmother’s larger-than-life client—for all the reasons you’d expect, along with a few you might not. Like, that it’s difficult for people to wrap their minds around the fact that the King of Pop could be a formative elder acquaintance in the casually anodyne way of, say, a dancing-school teacher or a little-league coach—someone whose small encouragements could be so big. “I was really quiet, but when someone sees something in you...” she says of Jackson, before abandoning the thought. “I had a connection to him, but I’m not, like, his family.”
Sky has also routinely been asked to account for the bad behavior of men in her orbit. A dominant narrative surrounding Night Time, My Time’s 2013 release was her relationship with indie rock band DIIV’s frontman, Zachary Cole Smith—an ex-boyfriend with whom she was arrested that September. He was the driver of the vehicle in which heroin, ecstasy, and a stolen license plate were found (and someone who’s since publicly acknowledged his struggles with addiction). Throughout that album cycle, the arrest became a more delicious red herring than anything Sky had actually done.
“The thing that’s still so fucked up about that: I didn’t have a drug problem, I dated someone who had a drug problem, I was in a car with someone who had a drug problem,” she says. “No one wants to talk about how my charge got dropped.” And the whole Kurt and Courtney star-crossed mythos that dramatized the headlines around the arrest? Spare her. “I was really young; I wasn’t even 21 yet for most of it. That wasn’t my great love story of my life,” she says, adding, “The people that have treated me so much better—they’re the ones who deserve the attention, not that guy.” (Presumably, one of those people is her current partner, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, frontman of the Danish punk band Iceage.)
Those who have followed Sky’s personal life could easily read “Downhill Lullaby” as an extended metaphor about a tumultuous relationship: “I can see that you want me/Going downhill too/Going downhill into a lullaby.” But she’s adamant about distancing her songwriting from the egos of her ex-boyfriends. “That’s the one rule I made,” she says. “The one thing that I’ve always had is my music. If someone treated me badly, they don’t get to have that. I don’t want to drag the weight of what they did around forever.”
For Sky Ferreira, time is not a flat circle, but rather a sticky mass of saltwater taffy. She tends to run late, but once she’s present and engaged, she can summon an Iron Man endurance. At the Russian Tea Room, two hours of conversation easily floats into six-and-a-half, and eventually we’re the last diners to leave. Somewhere in this elasticity, she talks about her refusal to give up on the work. “I’ve literally been using my life savings to do this record.” She is not motivated by money—to her, time isn’t money, but money is a thing to buy more time.
This springy relationship with time can make Sky seem almost anachronistic. In conversation, her offhanded pop-cultural mentions span director Todd Solondz’s 1995 cult indie Welcome to the Dollhouse, Courtney Love, the 1980 Loretta Lynn biopic Coal Miner’s Daughter, the 2018 iteration of A Star Is Born, and the cheerful ’60s sitcom “The Andy Griffith Show” (which she concedes, “No one my age knows”). Sky’s reference points, like Michael Jackson once advised, exist within a totality, not a blip.
One of her artistic lodestars glows brighter than the others: When Sky was 13, she discovered David Lynch. “He’s the first person who ever saw the world the way I saw it,” she says. “It was the first time anything made sense.” You can see Lynchian dream logic throughout her work. In fact, the staggering, airy title dirge from Night Time, My Time came to her in a dream. “I wrote it in the middle of the night, half-asleep,” she remembers about the album closer, which was built around a line spoken by the doomed girl at the center of the “Twin Peaks” saga. “Then I woke up the next day and I finished it in an hour. I still have the notes; the handwriting’s all fucked up. ” When she finished the song, she knew the album was finally done.
So Sky’s cameo in “Twin Peaks: The Return” had the meta-ness of astral projection. She played Ella, an enigmatic bar patron who talked about a penguin and flaunted a “wicked” armpit rash. “She played that scene so perfectly,” Lynch tells me. “She inhabited that character and made it real from a deep place. When she scratched that rash, you could really feel the itching!”
“Downhill Lullaby” summons the creeping orchestral gloom of “Night Time, My Time.” A sweeping arrangement in five parts, Masochism’s first single begins with a sashay of strings and an interpolation of the unmistakable squee of the Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony,” followed by a murmuring, angered bass. Sky exhales a numb indictment—“You leave me open/When you hit me”—and amid the layers of kettle-drum thunder and keening violins, there’s seduction and revenge, confusion and queasiness, silkiness and elegance. It sounds like the last thing Daniel Day Lewis’ Reynolds Woodcock hears before the poison takes hold in Phantom Thread.
This habit of visualizing music—Sky does it too. Except for her, it’s the first step of many in the song creation process: “I see it like it’s projected in a movie theater.” “Downhill Lullaby,” in particular, began with a vision of water in darkness. “Lakes kind of terrify me,” she explains, recalling a childhood memory of feeling lost in a Maryland forest that packs a similar unease. “In a lake, by yourself, you look at the bottom and it’s murky and still and you can’t really see anything or feel anything—and if you do, it’s fucking terrifying. It always feels like something will grab you and pull you under.” The eeriness became the foundation for the song.
She likens the ordeal of making “Downhill Lullaby” to Mickey Mouse’s Fantasia turn as the sorcerer’s apprentice. “You know how all the brooms are making a gigantic mess and the water starts rising and rising and rising and rising?” she says. “It was sort of like that: Magical, but at the same time, ‘What is going on?’ And then cleaning it all up.”
Her technique is more like a collagist—one who both scavenges her raw materials and oversees the fabrication—than a traditional songwriter. Conceptually, she works backwards, starting a song with an imagined outline of the final arrangement, isolating each sound element, and then embarking on the oft-laborious task of identifying studio musicians with the time and patience and willingness to conjure each sound individually, so that once she’s gathered all the pieces, she can begin the meticulous process of putting them all back together.
This unorthodox approach to songwriting has led to recurring logistical difficulties for Masochism. Namely, figuring out how to articulate what she hears so that someone who’s not in her brain can actualize it. “Nobody really understood what I was trying to say or wanted to do on paper,” she says. “It was a really long process.”
Sky never learned how to read music and she’s too self-conscious to use instruments that aren’t her voice in front of others. So if there’s an obvious reference point—like a certain note in a ’90s-radio staple she wants imitated—she’ll play that for her collaborator. But when there’s not, she’s often like a conductor asking to summon a mood.
In the case of Danish violinist Nils Gröndahl, who recorded all the strings on “Downhill Lullaby,” she recalls telling him: “‘Play it as if you’re one of the birds in Snow White, singing underwater, while slowly being suffocated by plastic.’” And you know what? In the end result, it’s easy to hear all that.
Additionally, Sky is even more particular about her final mixes. She will only be satisfied after she’s evaluated her song in seven different listening contexts: a car stereo; a smartphone with “regular” headphones; a smartphone with Apple earbuds; a smartphone’s built-in speaker; on a laptop; through “really bad, bad computer speakers—like the ones that came with Dells back in the early 2000s”; and the lush splendor of the studio, which is a personal luxury because, as she notes, “most people aren’t gonna listen that way.”
And she goes through this convoluted course of action for every song. It’s no wonder Masochism has taken so long. Says Sky, “I’ve accepted this is how I work and stopped feeling bad about it.”
Two Fridays after her insomniac New York trip, Sky is on the line, self-confidence restored, completing a high percentage of her sentences. Earlier in the week, she received the “Downhill Lullaby” master, immediately dropped her phone and shattered its screen, so now she’s on speaker. “I was like, I hope this isn’t a metaphor?” At least she’s laughing.
As for Masochism. She tells me she produced most of it herself, wrote with Los Angeles-based dream-pop artist Tamaryn, and worked with Ariel Pink collaborator Jorge Elbrecht. The proper album is coming, Sky swears, almost positively in 2019. Granted, she said the same thing last year—and the year before that and the year before that and the year before that—but this time, she has finally loosened her grip on some songs.
“Downhill Lullaby” may sound like dying Disney birds and “Don’t Forget” may be electro-pop arson, but Sky promises “more poppy” songs on Masochism too, as well as more “abstract,” orchestral stuff. “It’s very big, but also very violent,” she says, half-chuckling. “But not all the songs are super-dark.” Beyond that—the number of songs, tracklist, other credited collaborators—who can say? Sky can’t yet. She has some songs in mind she’d still like to write.

The sight of Patton’s favorite coffee shop brings a bright smile to his face and his excitement for his usual coffee drink grows. It’s been a few days since he’s had a chance to get here last and he’s more than ready to partake in his favorite coffee beverage.
The bell rings as Patton pushes open the door.
The shop is fairly busy, filled with mostly regulars though by the looks of it, there are some newcomers trying the coffee for the first time. Good, its what the shop deserves.
“Hey babes. I haven’t seen you for a few days so I thought you found a new coffee shop and that broke my poor little heart,” calls out a familiar voice.
Patton looks over to the counter and sees the owner, Remy standing there with his hand dramatically over his heart.
Shaking his head, he grins at his friend’s antics.
“Oh no, I’d never do that. I know better than that,” replies Patton, “I’ve missed you and the coffee these last few days. Blame it on work.”
Remy laughs.
“Do you need me to talk to Logan?” asks Remy.
“I appreciate it but after last time…..” Patton trails off.
Signing into the register, Remy focuses on the task at hand, now that his favorite customer is here.
“So, the usual Pat?” asks Remy.
Patton nods his head.
“Yuppers!”
Remy smiles as he enters the order into the register.
“So, one large vanilla latte and let’s see what scones we have today,” he looks into the baked goods display, “one cinnamon scone for everyone’s favorite cinnamon roll.”
Patton blushes at the compliment.
“Go have a seat, Patton and I’ll bring everything over when it’s ready,” comments Remy.
“Thanks Rem,” replies Patton.
He walks over to one of the free tables by the window then scans the coffee shop, to people watch while he waits. Eventually, his gaze lands back at the counter and moves down the line from Remy helping another customer to the baristas making drinks and chatting.
In that second, Patton realizes there’s a new person behind the counter – tall, well-kept hair, a charming smile who’s making the people around him laugh as he makes the orders for the customers.
The new barista catches Patton’s eye and winks, causing him to blush then turn his head away.
----------
On a particularly hot day, Patton decides to swing by the coffee shop for some nice and iced to drink because he needs a break from all the water and Gatorade he’s had already, to keep properly hydrated. He thinks Logan would be proud of him.
Patton waves at a couple of people he knows as he makes his way up the counter.
However, instead of Remy working the register, it’s the new barista.
Ok Patton. You’ve got this. Just because handsome and charming doesn’t mean anything.
The man’s eyes widen in excitement when he realizes who Patton.
“Oh! You’re a friend of Remy’s and one of the first people who came here when he opened up a few years ago,” he says grinning.
Patton blinks at few times.
Then he blushes; both at the fact the man knows who he is and that Remy’s been talking about him.
“Yup! That’ll be me!” replies Patton brightly.
The man chuckles.
“So, what will it be, padre?”
“Think I’ll do the iced chai tea latte and make it a large,” Patton looks at the man’s name tag, “Roman. Thanks!”
Roman rubs the back of his neck in embarrassment.
“I didn’t introduce myself, did I? I’ve only been here a few days,” says Roman.
Patton smiles.
“No worries, that’s why name tags were invented,” replies Patton.
Roman rings him up then Patton pays before stepping out of the way of the next customer while he waits for his drink. Patton can’t help watching Roman with a smile on his face.
----------
Weeks pass and Patton strikes up a friendship with Roman and it’s been the best few weeks of his life so far or it would be, if it wasn’t for this pesky little crush he’s developed on Roman. It’s just, Roman is so good, so kind and so charming. Really, it’s no surprise Patton’s fallen for him honestly.
Patton enters the coffee shop one day, ready to see two of his favorite people in the world (he can’t forget about Remy after all).
In the doorway, he pauses once he spots Roman – Roman standing very close to another guy dressed all in purple and black, blushing at whatever Roman’s whispering into his ear.
He decides he’s not in the mood for coffee after all.
----------
“To be fair, it’s not like the topic of our relationship statuses ever came up. To use your words, it’s highly probable that Roman has a boyfriend. I would have been surprised if he didn’t.”
Patton stares down at the coffee in his hands and sighs.
Sitting here in this popular chain coffee shop with Logan makes him feel weird and guilty. Not the Logan part; he likes that part actually. The coffee shop is too much for him to take – too loud, too fast and too crowded.
It’s not Remy’s coffee shop.
Logan stares at his friend with a frown on his face.
“Perhaps, you should talk to Roman. Clearly, you miss him and I’m sure he misses you. You’re a hard person to not miss,” states Logan.
Patton gives him a small smile.
“Wouldn’t it be poking my nose into something that’s not my business though? If he wanted me to know, he’d tell me when he’s good and ready to,” responds Patton dejectedly.
After all, he’s been taught to respect people’s privacy.
Logan’s frown grows bigger.
“You do seem to have quite the conundrum, Patton.”
He just sighs then takes a sip of the subpar coffee.
----------
Patton’s phone goes off, letting him know that he has a text message so he pulls out his phone and sees that its from Remy. The message is simply a video of a very sad-looking Roman trying to go about his job.
Immediately, he feels guilty.
Regardless of his feelings for Roman, Patton misses him and makes a mental note to stop by the coffee shop after work. He only hopes it won’t backfire on him and that Remy hasn’t banned him.
----------
Opening the door to the shop, Patton’s relieved to find the place fairly empty so he won’t make a fool of himself in front of a crowd. The first person he sees is Remy, so he cautiously makes his way over to him.
“Uh, hey Remy….”
Patton bites his lip as he watches his friend freeze at the sound of his voice before slowly turn around. He wasn’t prepared for what happened next.
Remy’s eyes widen at his appearance then slowly scan Patton’s body from head to toe then back up again.
“PATTON!”
Throwing his arms around the startled Patton, Remy hugs him tightly and doesn’t let go for a few minutes.
He releases Patton from his hug but keeps hold of his hand.
“If I had known a video of Roman was all that it took to bring you back in, I would have sent it earlier,” comments Remy.
Patton blushes.
“A what of me?” asks a familiar voice.
Roman appears in the doorframe leading to the hallway the restrooms are located and Patton feels the breath leaves his body because Roman looks not very glittery like the last time Patton saw him.
Time slows down the moment Roman sees Patton standing there.
Remy lets go of Patton’s hand then slowly backs away, subtly getting the last of the customers out of the shop before flipping the sign to ‘Close’ and locking the front door. Then he watches his friends from somewhere out of the way.
Roman stumbles over his feet in a hurry to get to Patton, afraid this is a hallucination and he’ll fade away.
Eyes wide and concern for Roman hurting himself, Patton rushes towards him just in time to have Roman trip over his feet, sending him flying into Patton, who’s arms wrap around his waist as he’s knocked to the floor.
Looking up at Roman and meeting his gaze, Patton smiles brightly which is returned quickly and makes Roman look more like himself.
Roman slowly gets off of him then stands up before holding out a hand for Patton to take and he does, so with Roman’s help, he’s on his feet in seconds.
“You alright, padre? Didn’t mean to knock you over,” says Roman.
Patton gives his hand a squeeze.
“I’m good, better than good actually,” he replies.
Before either of them can say more, another voice interjects.
“What the hell is going on here?”
It’s the purple punk guy Patton say talking to Roman last time he was here. He can’t help trying to drop Roman’s hand and putting some space between them.
Roman’s having none of that.
Tugging on his hand, Roman causes Patton to stumble into him then quickly let’s go of Patton’s hand in order to wrap his arm around his shoulder instead.
Mr. Purple makes his way across the room to them.
Patton looks between the two men in confusion.
“Isn’t he your boyfriend, Roman?”
There’s silence for a couple minutes before its broken by the sound of glass breaking – Remy dropped a glass on the floor in order to cover his mouth to hide his laughter.
“Yeah no, my dude. Whoever told you that is selling something. Princey here is the closet thing I have to a brother and my best friend but he’s not my type. I prefer someone with a brain in his head. I’m Virgil, by the way and you must be Patton,” explains Virgil.
Patton shakes his hand as he blushes because of his assumption.
Roman stares at Patton with his mouth open for a few minutes before he realizes what happened.
“Oh Patton, you cute puffball you,” he comments.
Virgil smirks.
“Yeah, Princey here prefers guys who wear polos, have glasses and lots of freckles that he wants to count then kiss.”
