I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.
- J.R.R. Tolkien
Colonel Graham Johnson of the Army Medical Services took his place among the thousands of other military personnel marching through London’s streets during King Charles’ coronation. Colonel Johnson carried with him an item of huge significance which had both a military and personal connection, the sword of Captain Noel Chavasse, one of only two British double VC winners and the only double VC recipient of the First World War.
Captain Noel Chavasse, qualified as a doctor and joined the RAMC when World War One broke out. In June 1915 he won a Military Cross after 12 hours rescuing casualties at Ypres. In August 1916 he was awarded his first VC for saving around 20 men while wounded at Guillemont On the Somme. His citation stated: “His courage and self-sacrifice were beyond praise.”
In July 1917, Chavasse saw action at the Battle of Passchendaele. With his men, he set up an advanced first-aid post in a captured German dugout. During heavy German shelling he was hit in the head, fracturing his skull. He received treatment for his injuries and later returned to his first-aid post, later sustaining two more head injuries.
On 2 August 1917, another shell blast resulted in a severe stomach wound which was so severe that Chavasse died on 4 August aged 32.
The citation for his second VC stated: “Though severely wounded early in the action whilst carrying a wounded soldier to the dressing station, he refused to leave his post, and for two days not only continued to perform his duties but went out repeatedly under enemy fire to search for and deal with the wounded. By his extraordinary energy and inspiring example, he was instrumental in rescuing many who would have otherwise undoubtedly succumbed under the severe weather conditions.”

Liverpool One. Zorki 4. Ilford Ortho Plus.
Liverpool One is a retail led urban development. It opened in 2008 (Capital of Culture year.) Upon completion it had a significant affect on the city's economy, seeing Liverpool enter the top five most popular retail destinations in the UK.
When it first opened I heard stories of photographers being challenged and asked not to take photos inside the development. Some people raised concerns about the sale of public land to private developers. However, I have never has any problems snapping in or around it.

March was a productive month, and not just because I read a good number of books. I also started writing again after a bit of a slump, and I managed to unhaul 37 books from my home library, though some of them have not actually left the house yet. The used bookstore I went to didn't take everything so I have to decide which one I'm hitting next. Or if I'm dumping the bulk on a thrift store because let's be honest, most used bookstores aren't going to want what's left either.
Can you tell I got rid of that many? Only if you saw the state of things before. My shelves are neat and tidy with no books wedged on top of other books to make things fit.
And I was so, so close to ending the month without buying more books! I really thought I was going to manage it! And then, well, I mentioned the used bookstore, right? I've been meaning to read Delaney but few bookstores stock him, and Lincoln's Dreams is one of the only Connie Willis novels I don't own. (That shop also had stickers, and a cute bookmark I can't show you because whiting out the identifying features would ruin the effect.) Under the Smokestrewn Sky was a rescue, of sorts. Why return it to the publisher when you could just buy it, right?
Anyway, in terms of books read, there were some really good ones! And only one that was not so great. I think I'm done reading and collecting Rat Queens and might need to include those in the next unhaul. And don't get me wrong about the Evie Dunmore. It is a Good Historical Romance Novel. There's just something about it that didn't work for me.
Click through to see everything I read this month, in the rough order of how glad I was to have read them.

Chavasse acknowledged, at least, that corsets could increase soreness of nipples, encourage malaise, and bring about episodical fainting, but he was unsympathetic toward women who experienced these symptoms. ‘If a patient felt faint’ he wrote somewhat testily, ‘she ought immediately lie down flat on her back . . . stays and any tight articles of dress – if she be so foolish enough to wear either tight stays or clothes – ought to be loosened’. The lady who is ‘enceinte’ he wrote, observing the social niceties surrounding gestation in 1868, must remove all bones from her garments and ‘wear her stays loose’. Women he continued, were not to ‘screw themselves up in tight stays and dresses’ because ‘the child should have plenty of room’.  While Chavasse recommended that the foetus was to be allowed plenty of room he made clear that mother was not. Despite his insistence that women loosen or relinquish stays during maternity, he urged them to embrace a lifestyle which acted as a ‘psychic’ corset that fettered their movements almost as effectively as the garments of cloth, bone and steel they had been advised to loosen. The ‘psychic’ corset was invoked for reasons identical to those for its material counterpart, to hide the embarrassingly distended female body from view. Pregnant readers were exhorted to limit their exercise to a morning walk about the garden or in the country, presumably out of sight. Twenty five years later physicians were still advising women to remain under physical and social siege while pregnant.
