how do you avoid making a creature that's too similar to another?

Excellant question, because it’s a perfect occasion for me to discuss about diversity, a central theme in this serie, and how to illustrate it !!

The first method is creature design in its purest form : what does my creature looks like ? And then breakdown every aspect of what makes a monster. For anatomy i see 2 main parameters :

architecture : how many limbs ? heads ? and where to put them ? For example you can see “gryphons” as a kind of structure, with 4 legs, 2 wings and a beak (roughly) and play around with this structure

proportions : the same chimera with different proportions makes very different monsters ! You can play with the head/body ratio, make some limbs vestigial, or big wingspan to make them impressive, etc. For chimeras, this is the main difference between drawing and taxidermy !

Another aspect for my case with chimeras is which species i’m using. Unless i have a precise idea in mind i always make some quick research :

for example if i need a flamingo i check all the different kinds of flamingoes on wikipedia ; sometimes i go back up the phylogenic trees to see similar animals but slightly different

if i’m illustrating a monster from a precise geographic location i try to look for local species too, to make it more consistent

sometimes the design is based around a particular specie of animal i find interesting

i guess it goes with species, but you can obviously change patterns (on fur, wings etc) or colors (not my problem tho).

For example, lately i’m drawing Lemures where i combine bodies of lemurs with heads of larvae : the architecture is always the same but the possibilities are endless !

Second method is more concept-driven :

it’s how can i challenge definitions and concepts (whats is a dragon ?? seriously ???), try to explore it and cover all the range of the definitions and push them at their limits (ok now i have no idea what a dragon is anymore)

it can also start with a theme (what if i combine all the animals behind the symbols of the Seven Deadly Sins to make a chimeric representation?? what if that beach i went once 2 years ago were full of creatures ???), and it could be something very abstract (what if that music is actually about a monster ??)

you can also mix concepts together (metachimeras) !!

I also start from prompts (through asks, challenges and shittycryptids, mostly), because there are many ways to interprete them : sometimes i try to channel different inspirations by previous interpretations into one design, sometimes i just give what people wanted to see, but i have more fun when i respond exactly to the prompt in the most unpredictable way.

All of these methods bring a lot of diversity, and i will never run out of ideas ! The possibilities for chimeras are endless, and these are some methods i’ve got to find them. If you have other methods please share them !! And if you are interested by the methodologic aspect, i’ve done a masterpost that explain the tags for different categories and links to check the chimeras behind.

And also, most importantly maybe, but i try to leave some space for intuition : if something works or comes in my mind and it looks good i just go with it ! I always have a sketchbook for when i’ve got random ideas coming to me. Intellectualizing the process is fun, but creation isnt only about methodology.

Family Life: Babyhood 🍼 - a Thrawn headcanon

Idk how my headcanons keep getting longer and longer. I just have a lot of thoughts for this man ok ☺️

This headcanon spans the first 1 1/2 years of your new family life with Thrawn and your baby daughter.

After the birth of your daughter and recovering from your strenuous pregnancy, your everyday life on the Chimera changes drastically. Parenting is certainly more difficult than you and Thrawn expected…

You knew when you married Thrawn, you would marry a workaholic.

When he returns from his job he will make up for it by looking after the baby though.

He talks to her, tells her about his work day, and also doesn't mind if his little one vomits on him when she drank her milk too greedily.

His favorite thing to do is skin on skin contact. Yep, he likes to sit and put his daughter on his bare chest. They both relax very well and it's a great way to strengthen their father-daughter bond.

Thrawn doesn’t really do baby talk. He talks to your daughter in a voice full of affection, but it's the same way he sometimes speaks to you when he expresses his admiration - like he would speak with an adult. He also speaks to her in Cheunh a lot.

He's fascinated by the way your body provides for the baby. That also leads him to feel like he's in charge of your diet plan (he's not but you let him believe he is) He simply makes sure you take your vitamins and don't eat junk food. You choose to hide your favorite candy from him, but he actually knows where you hide it and doesn't say anything. In fact, it makes him smile that you pull this trick on him.

Thrawn doesn't really know how to play with your baby. For example, when she offers him her little stuffed tooka toy he doesn’t know what to do with it. Thrawn.exe has stopped working.

Once your baby girl is old enough to eat solid foods, you feed her pretending the spoon is a spaceship trying to land in her mouth, especially when it's healthy food that she doesn’t like that much. Thrawn watches you do it a few times before trying it himself… Let’s just say he ends up with baby porridge on his face and black tank top. You will tease him for weeks about it.

You teach Thrawn some lullabies in Basic since all lullabies he remembers are in Cheunh. You try to learn the Cheunh lullabies, the language is just extremely difficult for humans to pronounce correctly.

Once your baby is asleep you are both exhausted. You don't have as much sex as you used to, but Thrawn continues to make sure all your carnal needs are met. It gets easier once your daughter sleeps through the night.

You always loved that crisp scent of your husband that reminds you of ice and snow. Turns out your daughter has the exact same scent to her. It must be a Chiss thing. Same goes for her thick skin. Thrawn has once told you that Chiss skin evolved to be thicker to withstand the freezing conditions of their homeworld, Csilla. When you mention the similar scent Thrawn chuckles and explains that this scent comes from a secretion from tiny skin glands. This secretion is supposed to protect the skin from frostbite and the cold in general, in addition, it also makes Chiss skin feel so smooth all the time.

You feel overwhelming pride when your daughter calls you Mama for the first time. Same goes for Thrawn when she calls him Ticsi, which means Dad in Cheunh. Alternately she also calls him Titi, the Cheunh version for Dada. You always try not to laugh when she says that…for obvious reasons.

Thrawn will always remember with sadness that he was not there when his daughter took her first steps. But you are there, and you make a holo recording for him to watch. It's still not the same for him though.

Actually you make a lot of holo recordings of your daughter to capture those moments to look back to when the days of babyhood have long passed.

Once your daughter can walk you have a hard time keeping her from running away. She has an independent streak and so much curiosity. She wants to meet everyone on the Chimera and learn how the world works. Thrawn explains to you that most Chiss children are quite independent from a young age. He's worried about her habit of running away though. The Chimera is a warship and not exactly a place where a child should grow up.

Once your daughter is one year old you decide to start working again. You buy a nanny droid to help you out with your kid. You work in your quarters, but this way you have the droid look after your kid so you can focus on your work. The droid prevents her from exploring the ship almost daily.

Your daughter was never one to throw many tantrums, this changes however. She also starts to get a bit destructive. Stuffed animals and pillows become her main victims. Thrawn makes sure to lock away his precious art pieces behind glass so his daughter can't reach them.

You are both worried about her drastic change in behavior. One day you take a walk with her to the bridge to show her where her dad works. Afterwards she is her regular, curious self again for like two days. That's when she starts throwing tantrums again. You figure that she is sick of the confines of your quarters. You change your routine from that point on, taking her on daily walks on the Chimera, showing her around. She may be a toddler, but you have a feeling she understands more than she lets on, you see it in her scarlet eyes. Your daily walks help, and sometimes Thrawn even joins you. The tantrums have stopped altogether.

Chiss children age faster than human children. Your daughter ages like a human though, and for that you’re glad. You think human childhood is short enough as it is.

Thrawn always tells you what a great mother you are. He thinks he's not the best father though, being so busy with his job. His daughter loves him so much, but he wishes he could offer more to the both of you.

You do realize that quite soon your daughter will be every bit as smart as her father. She finds logical solutions to problems that other toddlers her age are not yet capable of finding.

Thrawn tells you how different your daughter is from full-blooded Chiss children. She's just so expressive with her emotions and a real whirlwind. She can be a bit loud and is able to create a mess in ten minutes.

When she's old enough to use a stylus, Thrawn is eager to teach her all about art. Through looking at her doodles he's able to understand her better because toddler language is very limited when it comes to emotions. Kids that age usually don't understand their own emotions that well yet anyway.

Uncle Eli is your daughter’s most favorite person aside from her parents. It's up to you and Eli to explain to Thrawn what certain words in toddler language in Basic mean. Eli also volunteers as a babysitter. Your toddler prefers him over the nanny droid any day.

Instead of date nights you make trips to all kinds of beautiful places together with your daughter. She loves being planetside!

Without telling you, Thrawn uses his generous salary to buy a summer house on a rural planet of a neutral system. It's located at a convenient distance to a small farming village. It's no luxurious villa but a simple cottage. You’re surprised and very grateful. Only very few people know of the cottage. You and your daughter actually spend a lot of time there, and return to the Chimera when the homesickess gets too bad. Thrawn regrets only rarely being able to go with you.

Nothing fills you with more joy than seeing your daughter waddle through the green meadows, exploring the nature around her with the curious eyes only a little child can have.

When you're planetside and Thrawn can't accompany you, he actually feels lonely. He comms you once or twice a day. Deep in his heart he knows you deserve a life away from this warship, to breathe fresh air and feel rays of sunlight on your skin. You know how lonely he feels when you're not around, he doesn't need to tell you. So more often than not you and your daughter return to the Chimera without notifying him in advance. The reunions are always the sweetest.

I will write three of those Family Life headcanons. There will always be a gap of a few years in the timeline between each of them. 💙

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT Actually I'm going to share my fresh, sleep-deprived thoughts that I wrote yesterday- or more like, this morning gfhhgf bear with me cause I was loosing it :>

As a heads up as to why the formating is all weird, this was sent to a friendo who worked on PL :3 Did a list of things that stuck to me in those 4-5 first hours right before falling asleep! I stoped at the little hideout with Myers, didn't met Reed or Kurt or MrHands or Anybody elses yet really 👁👄👁✋ taking my sweet time with it!

The start : I LOVED the glitchy holocall with songbird, it set the tone immediately

God walking up to the gate and seeing all those cars and npcs waiting to enter- THE BIT with the cops who cant go in ?? omg loved it, again its such a tiny thing that set the tone right up

Songbird introduction oh my goddddddd…. HGJG I love HER SHE'S SO COOL… When she was like "were going to crash so I woobled into your relic" I was???? Ok so How and What and What and What UH… Also I can see why people won't like her, already just cause she mute Johnny and isnt a Samurai fan fhdjbqg BUT I PERSONALLY REALLY LIKE IT

Dogtown itself???? Holyshit. Like, I remember dev saying that Night City itself was a character, the main character even, and they nailed it hardcore with Dogtown too- all of the civilians are fucking so memorable too??? how good the random crowd npcs look as well!! Its a glowup from vanilla and it shows (special kudos to the netrunner kid vendor, and the flame thrower elbow guy and his little dance ghdjs)

I wheezed when trying the AR googles HGKHQ

The crash : God. Even tho I knew what was going to happen, the amount of chills I had during that scene!! It reminded me of one of my favorite DLC from Mass Effect 3, Citadel, there is a scene where Shepard eat shit and fall through a big aquarium / building and is truly alone, hurt and all- gave me the same vibes of "the world is too big, too Much and I'm just one Guy" ??? It got me so hookt, god. ALSO THE TITLE POPING??? UUUGGGHHH. GOD.

Rush to the crash, the sneaking to the ship and getting Myers got me Alert and excited

Escorting Myers feels nice cause she's not useless, she knows how to handle herself (DUH!) but I mean her A.I as a NPC, I like that she also sneak attack on ennemies when you do, like Jackie did

Part I had struggle with was the Driving Myers to the Garage bits, was getting frustrated- I love driving in FPP but with this car, in those streets and in this stressful situation YUOOOCK it wasnt IT FHFJJG switched to TPP and managed after a few tries UwU

OK GOD. The museum- amazing visuals and lore crumbs ofc BUT THE CHIMERA???? HELLO???????? THEY FUCKING POPPED OFF. I havent felt this stressed on a boss battle in FOREVER! Funny enough it reminded me of my first time against Nefarious from Ratchet and clank 3, and its positive HKGJ I was a wee kid back then and its my favorite game from the ratchet serie (which is my favorite console serie tbh) and it made me so nostalgic of that time??? REALLY Comf, really challenging, I shat myself.

District itself is FUCKING INSANE. Of course, it looks amazing, the sound design, the VIBES- I thought everything was already done in night city, how much different nuance of CyberPunk can you do when you already have such a big city with such different districts?? but dogtown is so different and yet fit perfectly

I LOVE. THE. NOMAD DIALOGUE OPTIONS… One of my big "fear" was being left out of the fun cause yeah Nomads really just have the badlands kinda hfjdjg but!!! I already been fed from the few choices I had, especially the one when cutting out the tracker from Myers neck, mentioning the uhh ritual thing, I was !!!!!!! AAAAAH FOOD FOR THOUGHTS AND ROTS I LOVE IT

talking about Nomads I LOVE THE DIVERSITY in the new garments!! Had a lot of corpo and barghest armor loot at the start, so I didnt expected to see some cool denim harnesses, practical jeans and worker gears OwO Excited to see more cause AZHHHGFH

you know how i say i wont write things and then i do ok maybe you dont but its a pattern so basically i was like nah i'd never write teen wolf au for stranger things and then i got thinking and now im half obsessed with the IDEA of a teen wolf au from 3B - the end of teen wolf 6B so basically the whole killing nancy thing is like. i said that mike as theo wouldnt work cuz that means he has to come later but actually i have a better idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, so theo comes at the start of s5, so actually it could quite work for mike to be a regular character except i just gonna rearrage things and traumatize him more than normal. as in. having him being kidnapped during the season 4 events/ after 3B events (basically that season was about a dead pool for supernatural, but mike isnt supernatural *YET* in my head) by the dread doctors (mad scientists with a niche for chimera teenage human experiments) and the thing with theo is . he kinda watched his sister die and the dread doctors took her heart and then replaced it with theos so he could be a genetic chimera and they could articfically make him a werewolf. so like. yeah that with nancy.

Semi-Liveblog of Xenogears

Finally getting around to this crunchy 1998 jrpg, watching it on youtube because ive been told the UI and game mechanics are really ass in places, this will be copypasted from my carefully largely spoiler free discord ramblings to my platonic partner in batches so no spam.

I know a few spoilers for this that were specifically why I wanted to witness it- IE that I can ‘Same Neurotype!’ a character, and its Really Dark. The Mindfuck stuff goes without saying its the monolithsoft staff.

Jesus christ Feis english VA is unintentionally hilarious Its a 14 year old anime boy voice and hes Beefy Like it would be one thing if it was a good 14 year old boy voice, but it sounds like a grown man trying(badly) to do a 14 year old boy voice for a beefy man which is why its funny good thing hes mostly crying and screaming in the cutscenes and not talking

Ahhh yes, time for the talking about god again! This is a xenogame AND a jrpg after all. Gods are hunted for sport. I think I kinda like the 1.25 speed versions of some of these songs more than the regular version but that might be because ive now listened to them that way for 2 hours

Cant stop thinking about the final confrontations that Father and Ed have with Truth, and the parallels, the message it sends. Father demands to know why he failed and Truth says “its because you didn’t believe in yourself.” Because Father never actually went out into the world and interacted with people as equals. He never grew. He stayed cooped up in his little hermit cave, severed his own desires, making himself less and less of a person and called that strength.

Father had hundreds and hundreds of lifetimes to live and he wasted all of them clinging to his plan to become god instead of doing anything to grow. He clung to his god plan in place of actual self improvement and thats why he failed. He stagnated. He failed to realize that true strength, true growth, comes from opening up to others, making yourself vulnerable to them, relying on them, treating others as friends and equals. Learning that its ok that you cant do everything alone, because people can come together to accomplish what they cant do alone.

And then Ed’s scene with Truth that drives it all home. Ed who first came to Truth as a terrified trembling child trying to play god and undo death. Ed who now stands before Truth a completely different man. Showing his growth by making himself vulnerable through giving up his alchemy, his magic superpower. When Truth tries to tempt him by suggesting he’s lowering himself to becoming a normal human, Ed rejects that framing. “ive always been a powerless human who couldn’t even save one little girl who was turned into a chimera” Even here after defeating his greatest enemy and saving his country, Ed is humble. He still remembers his failures, his limits, and what he cant do no matter how much power he has.

This isnt a change, its not that “from now on he’ll have to rely on his friends” its “he’s already been getting help from his friends and helping them in turn this whole time, all thats changed is he truly understands it now” Ed smiles, “even without alchemy i still have my friends” and Truth is jubilant. In a display of emotion we’ve never seen before they shout “thats the right answer!” and congratulate Ed on figuring it out. Its a rejection of the classical masculine narratives about becoming a powerful man who can do it all. Thats not possible and Truth (and the story) celebrate Ed for becoming a man who learned to let others help him.

Its not that you should try to gain power to become a being that can do anything alone, fullmetal alchemist declares such an attitude as cowardice. As an attempt to run away from reality. Instead the narrative is saying that living like Ed, connecting with your community, helping others and letting others help you in turn, thats correct. Thats how you should live. In embracing vulnerability ed shows true growth and courage and thats why he gets to walk out of truth through a shining gateway with everything he ever wanted and thats why Father is dragged down into a gateway of darkness for all eternity.

Hi anon! I can’t thank you for this ask enough because I was looking for an excuse to make a post about it but couldn’t find one so THANK YOU!!

ok first of all quick parenthesis but i’ve seen so many people say that “even if they kissed it could be platonic” like. funny how that argument is only used for same-gender pairings and people never say a straight kiss is platonic. when you look at it with this mindset, everything can be platonic. kissing, hand holding, sex, marriage. that’s why context and subtext is important, and that’s why togashi is going out of his way to provide us with very emotional scenes (like killua comparing gon to light itself, him saying he wants to commit lovers’ suicide, gon saying that he’s really glad he met killua out of the blue while blushing, and many, many others) to back us up on the fact that if they kissed, it’d definitely be because they’re in love with each other.

OK now onto the real part of my post HAHA

I think it’s extremely telling that both the 1999 and 2011 anime adaptations emphasize on the gay content.

1999 is........ extremely gay. Like there’s no other words. The “Ohayou” opening and the “Do You Feel Like I Feel” ending have romantic lyrics over visuals that are just. gay. Like. Just look at this.

i can’t find a version with the RIGHT lyrics but "koibito datari tomodachi de itaikara” literally means “because i want to to be your lover and your friend”

and this ending is just. peak gay. the visuals are gay. and the lyrics are stuff like :

like man. they didnt have to go this hard. those songs were specifically written for hxh btw. like, they didn’t exist before. they were commissioned for the show. just so that’s clear.

Throw in the incredible amount of subtext and gay moments in the show itself, like this for example. 1999 version is drowning in gay subtext.

But why ? You don’t randomly decide to turn an anime gay ?? especially when at the time the anime came out, there was literally no subtext between either Leorio/Kurapika or Killua and Gon. Like, none.

We talked about it with @/reeeyachi, and I really, really believe that Togashi told them where the story was headed. Like, he straight off the bat told them “these two pairings will be canon by the end of the manga”. Reeya explained that at some point, they had to ask Togashi for his opinion on the plot before animating, so Togashi was definitely involved in the show to some extent (and i also found canon confirmation that he was involved btw, picture below). They probably presented their general idea, and Togashi approved. Which leaves two options : either Togashi found it funny that they interpreted the story as having gay undertones when it has none and let them do whatever they wanted, or he specifically told them straight off the bat that his manga was going to be queer. The first option is highly unlikely to me, considering that in the end, canon material has even more gay subtext than 1999. It only leaves the latter option. That’s the only logical explanation for why 1999 went absolutely crazy with the gay content : Togashi must’ve told them.

And okay, let’s assume that 1999 was a fever dream. Let’s assume that it’s not an accurate representation of the spirit of HxH at all.

We still got 2011 version, which focuses heavily on Killua and Gon’s relationship, and emphasizes the gay aspect of their relationship too. Not only did the 2011 emphasize the cute heartfelt moments between the both of them, they also added a few moments, like for example that scene on Greed Island where Killua looks at Gon with heart eyes and doesn’t say anything for like 3 seconds because he’s awestruck. (let’s not mention all the times when they made Killua look at Gon with a pure look of love on his face)

Let’s also throw in Yuzu’s ending songs, especially Nagareboshi Kirari that’s just. A fucking love song. And this song was commissioned for HxH once again, the song uses male pronouns and Yuzu said that they wrote the song after their interpretation of their reading of the Chimera Ant Arc.

And like you said, the Hunterpedias !

I often hear dudebros say that “HxH 2011 was made by shippers and doesn’t represent canon material”. But isn’t it weird that the entire cast of HxH 2011 agreed on emphasizing the gay subtones of HxH ? Like, it’s not just one animator. It’s all the crew that worked on the anime adaptation. From the director to the animators. The majority had to agree to highlight this, it’s not just the decision of one person.

And that brings me to my last point. I might be talking out of my ass, but I feel like it’s mostly general knowledge in Japan that HxH is queer work. I feel like it’s linked to the cultural subtext that we don’t have but that definitely echoes with the japanese audience and leads them to think that HxH is queer work. I’m mostly thinking about Killua’s story echoing Tanabata, the “Killua ja nakya dame nan da”, the “shinjuu” line, etc. All of these don’t ring the same way to our ears, because we don’t have the cultural upbringing or context. But it makes sense for the japanese audience to hear the word “shinjuu” and immediately realize that “oh, that’s a romantic word. Killua must love Gon”.

I feel like that explains why not one, but the TWO anime adaptations decided to go apeshit with the gay content. It’d explain why “the 2011 anime crew are shippers”, why Yuzu wrote a love song as an ending, why the Hunterpedias feature kisses.

Either it’s mostly clear for Japanese people that HxH is queer and represents a love story, or Togashi directly told the anime adaptation crew. I personally think it’s a mix of both tbh : Togashi probably never intended to hide that his story was queer from either Shonen Jump or the 1999 crew and probably told them straight off the bat, and the subtext rings louder for Japanese speakers, which emphasizes it even more.

One thing’s certain. You don’t randomly make an anime gay for the sake of being gay. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve never heard of any other manga being randomly turned gay in the anime adaptation.

And at the end of the day, the canon material features a LOT of gay subtones, so I think it truly emphasizes that at least, 1999 version HAD to know where the story was headed, and decided to overplay it because they knew that at the end of the manga they’d be canon. Because Togashi probably let them know.

(man i feel like im a delusional shipper typing this LMFAO - but like thats really my take on it. i definitely think SJ knows that hxh is queer, and i feel like togashi had to let 1999 crew know too. it’d make sense. u don’t pull gay content out of ur ass for the fun of it. especially since there was no gay content at the time, until later where togashi put a shitton of gay subtext -like, 1999 had to know in advance. ++ add all the cultural nuances like i said - itd make sense for japanese people to realize that yes, hxh features a gay love story. to me thats why both the entire crews of 1999 + 2011 are “shippers”)

I came up w her hatsu before i hit the chimera arc so unfortunately its rlly similar to knov's but

opal's hatsu abilities are void of vengeance: the ability to open nen portals to any place she's been to or seen (if she has not ever physically been to a place she is attempting to portal to, her nen may transport her somewhere random that she visits frequently.) And spatial slots: in which she creates a nen "save slot" where she can store physical weapons and draw them at will during combat.

Do you have any predictions for the next season based on the return of Sylvester? Do you think it be like when he returned in the comics? Just a big old side plot about poor Syl's money problems and a cool film studio set thingy base. (they could film scenes just on the sets of other shows)

YES i have predictions but they're more related to johns' & jdr's decision to make him a syl/jack chimera than anything. johns has mentioned in the stargirl aftershow that jack knight storylines may potentially be used, especially w/ the return of the shade (who betrayed the ISA, as dragon king mentioned), and i like to imagine it was with the shade's intervention that sylvester managed to survive, and whatever it was that he needed him for kept him from seeing pat & the staff for 10 years

i mean this isnt just his legacy, but his home. the stars and stripes have been a fixture in his life for ages, had been a means for him to be himself-- because no matter how much of sylvester pembertons life is changing or in jeopardy the star-spangled kid (and eventually starman) is there for him to live and breathe in-- and it doesn't make sense to me that he'd be revived (or saved from death?) and NOT return to pat and the stars and the staff

unless there was a bigger bad. unless there was a threat in those 10 years that sylvester had to deal with, and if they DO go the jack knight route of him forging a bond with the shade-- who is another league of power altogether-- it would make sense to me if the shade saved him in exchange for his help, and if syl couldnt reveal he was alive because of the upper hand of all the baddies thinking he was dead

as much as i love infinity inc, i feel like any chances for it were dashed as soon as they aged down syl's teammates (rick, yolanda, beth, hank jr) to courtneys generation and established in-universe that starman was leading the JSA. his JSA leadership basically functions as a stand-in for his being team dad of infinity inc, imo

and that being said i think he'll end up team dad of JSA 2.0 alongside pat. like pat was doing his best but hes way in over his head for sure??? when syl meets courtney in those JSA issues way back when he takes her under his wing IMMEDIATELY, no questions, and assures her she has a place as the star-spangled kid. that she has worth. and he promises to help her as best he can. if johns & jdr are going to write him as sylvester pemberton in any way hes GOT to be a good mentor to her... and, in extension, her friends

i imagine its going to be syl who fixes chuck. i imagine yolanda talking to him about murder (bc syl didnt have a no kill rule, and if they adapt his history as SSK close to siegels vision, then he killed as a teenager as well). i imagine syl providing the JSA 2.0 with paychecks and insurance and dental because they need it, ok, they really do

most of all, going back to the mentor thing, and the fact that stargirl has been a story of courtney discovering her identity more than anything, i imagine as they get closer and get to know each other, syl is going to confirm that when courtney picked up the staff and put on the stars, she DID become stargirl. and even if hes here and alive she is STILL stargirl, and the staff is still hers, and hes just glad to see someone still fighting the good fight-- that his legacy is carried on in someone like her

season 1 establishes courtneys place in her family i feel. season 2 will probably use the fact syl isnt her dad and have his return be a means to establish that she IS stargirl, even if she isnt his blood, and to be proud of that and own it

anyway tl;dr syls a positive presence ok. i refuse evil syl. i refuse "he was a shapeshifter all along". im gonna be MAXIMUM CLOWN and say hes gonna be a friend and mentor... but he'll probably bring news from his 10 year absence of some big evil with him for the JSA 2.0 to fight
