So in my SG! universe, Prowl is a lot more socially intelligent and more adapt at manipulating people- I think, for these reasons, Chromedome and him never would have had a falling out. Prowl would have kept Chromedome right underneath his thumb throughout the entire war, a perfect willing mnemnosurgeon for whatever purposes he needs to serve.

I would even go so far to say this: Prowl, of course, wants only good things for Chromedome. Chromedome is his friend! But what's best for Chromedome is winning the war. And that can't happen if he's distracted, fawning over a new conjunx... Prowl needs him sharp, and focused.

So if something, perhaps, were to happen to his conjunx... and furthermore, if Chromedome then was so grief stricken that he couldn't properly work- Well, it's Prowl's duty to look out for him. Maybe nudge him in a better direction, subtly (oh so subtly) remind Chromedome of the power he holds, literally, at his fingertips. The power to just make that pain disappear, like it was never even there...

But Chromedome is smart. Really fucking smart, actually. You can't make it as a mnemosurgeon if you're not.

And things start to add up. Weird gaps in his memories, little comments from people he doesn't understand, a picture of him and a stranger embracing, smiling, happy-

He can't quite figure it out. But he knows this: something is wrong. Something is very wrong, and the war might be over now, and Prowl might smile and nod and say all the right things, and he might even be the oldest friend Chromedome has ever had! But it's not enough anymore. It's not enough, because when Prowl looks at Rewind there is something in his eyes that scares Chromedome like you wouldn't believe.

When Prowl tells him about Overlord stuck to the bottom of the Lost Light, when he instructs Chromedome to go, and manage the situation on site- Chromedome says yes. Unflinchingly. Of course he does. It's Prowl, he doesn't say no to Prowl.

But as the Lost Light launches out into space, a little voice in the back of his mind sighs a breath of relief. He pulls Rewind, newly conjunxed, a little closer to him, and tracks the distance from home. The gap widens, and widens, and Chromedome is thankful for it.

Thankful, and pretending that he doesn't still feel Prowl's eyes boring into him from across space and time.

Human Buddy 'accidentally' adopted by Chromedome and Rewind

SFW, Platonic, Familial, Human Reader

They meet Buddy at Swerve’s. The pair had just heard about the new human joining the quest.

Buddy was the newest addition to the crew having been sent to look out for any unusual behavior with Megatron. Technically they were simply a glorified babysitter.

“Hey Megs!”—Buddy

“Yes?”—Megatron

“Are you having any evil thoughts?”—Buddy

“No?”—Megatron

“Okay, just making sure. Also, Rodimus is hiding in the supply closet in corridor 12.”—Buddy

“How did you know I was looking for him and rat him out?”

“You have that look in your optics… And he has been slipping in some of his work on my pile, it’s payback time. Happy hunting!”--Buddy

When Buddy sat down at the bar, Rewind was the first to approach Buddy. Chromdome had left earlier to go get their drinks and had gotten caught in Brainstorm’s rants.

He wanted to film a human for the longest time and now he the chance to do that.

“Hello there!”--Rewind

“Oh hello!”--Buddy

“I’m Rewind.”--Rewind

“That’s a nice name. I’m Buddy, but you already knew that didn’t you.”--Buddy

“Kind of hard not to hear the name when you’re the talk of the ship right now.”--Rewind

“I hope that doesn’t last too long.”--Buddy

“Oh don’t worry about that. Usually something bigger will come in and cancel that out.”--Rewind

“I don’t know if you’re joking about the bigger stuff.”--Buddy

“Trust me there have been so many things that have happened on this ship. For example, I’m not even from this universe, I’m from another one that got canceled out.”--Rewind

“What?!”--Buddy

“And the me from this reality was killed by Overlord!”--Rewind

“I thought that guy was dead!”--Buddy

Chromdome came in a few minutes after looking for Rewind. He saw his Conjux talking with the new human, who was showing them some videos from his camera.

He had been curious about the new human amongst the crew. He decided to go and joined in the conversation.

“Oh, Domey you made it!”--Rewind

“Domey?”--Buddy

“That’s his nickname for me. The names Chromedome.”--Chromedome

“Oh! Youre the guy that Prowl’s talked about!”--Buddy

“Prowl?”--Chromedome

“Prowl!?”--Rewind

“Yeah, something about you two being partners and all but it was kind of hard to hear some of the stuff when multiple tables are being flipped near you.”--Buddy

“Heh. He does have a thing for flipping them doesn’t he.”--Chromedome

“Yes! One time he flipped one and I was inside the drawer!”--Buddy

“What! Really?!”--Rewind

“Oh yeah! I was just looking for some of my data pads in there when the next thing I knew I was flying inside the thing and landed with my butt in the air!”--Buddy

“Now you have to tell us the rest of that story.”--Chromedome

“With pleasure!”--Buddy

Everything went on from there.

Buddy soon began meeting up with the couple weekly. The newly formed trio would talk anything under the metaphoric sun. It could have been about the latest reports to stories about the ship before Buddy came on board.

“So that’s where Ratchet’s hands came from?”--Buddy

“Yeah, Drift cut them clean off!”--Chromedome

“Wow!”--Buddy

“That’s nothing on what happened with the Sparkeater.”--Rewind

“What’s a Sparkeater?”—Buddy

The meetings soon became daily. The talks soon became more personal and longer, not that either party minded. It was the level of trust that was shown, and each was glad to have experienced.

Even though Rewind was the first to become acquainted with Buddy, it was Chromedome who first started having other thoughts about Buddy.

He felt very protective over Buddy but not in the way he felt protective of Rewind. Chromedome wanted to protect Buddy from any harm physically, mentally, and emotionally. He wanted to be there for Buddy. He loved them like if they were his own—

Oh

Oh…

He had a talk with Rewind about the sudden situation they were thrusted upon. Thank goodness too because Rewind was just coming up with the same feelings.

They both talked and agreed to talk to Buddy about the situation like civil adults.

Of course, on the Lost Light no plan goes according to plan.

The pair was waiting for Buddy in their usual spot when they spotted Buddy coming in.

They greeted each other as a larger bot came in front of Buddy.

They were clearly intoxicated as they began belittling Buddy.

“What’s a fleshy like you doing here anyways?”—Random Bot

“I beg your pardon?”--Buddy

“There's no way that this is the only-hic- reason you’re here. A puny organic like you. I -hic- I bet I could just flex my digits and you’ll be a smear on the floor. Human scum.”—Random bot

Rewind was ready to throw servos. How dare that bot talk to Buddy like that!?

Chromdome was already standing up not sure if to restrain Rewinds full wrath or to tackle the bot.

But as it turned out, they didn’t need to do that.

“You gonna say something Fleshy? Or is your tiny processor still thinking on what to say?”—Random bot

“…Oh, you’re finally done with the petty names and poor excuse of insults. Where those insults? I couldn’t tell if they were with that poor execution. Anyways since we are calling each other names, it’s my turn.”—Buddy

Buddy gave him the verbal beating of the century.

The bot ran away crying.

The bar was cheering.

“Way to give it to them Fleshy!”--Whirl

“Cyclonus can you please let go of my audials?”--Tailgate

“No.”--Cyclonus

“Drinks on me Buddy. You earned one.”--Swerve

“WOAH! THAT’S MY KID RIGHT THERE! THAT WAS AMAZING!”--Rewind

“Kid?”--Buddy

“I’m proud of you Kiddo. You stood you’re ground and made a grown mech eat his words!”--Chromedome

“Kid?”--Buddy

“…Oh…”—Chromedome and Rewind

“Keep your family drama away from my drinks. And congratulations on the kid you love birds.”--Whirl

“Whirl! Leave my dad’s alone!”—Buddy

“Dad?”—Chromedome

“Dad’s!?”—Rewind

“You’re welcome.”--Whirl

The three did end up talking about what happened in the bar a bit later. It was only to make sure everything was understood about the names.

Now the three carry their new titles with pride as one family unit.

| • he'd be worried at first with the amount of coffee you've consumed ,, having learned about humans and other things concerning them incase of an emergency

| • in this case ,, itd seem the knowledge he learned wasnt too helpful

| • bouncing all around the medbay and just hyper in general was quite a pain for first aid to deal with

| • but he didnt want to be too rude to you ,, and gently coaxed you into spending all that energy of yours running laps around the edge of the medlab where you wouldnt get too hurt

| • though when you finally wear it off ,, he'll be quick to scold you ,, holding his digit in front of your face and waving it side to side in a 'no no' motion before taking you to his habsuite and laying you down for a nap

- brainstorm

| • he honestly doesnt know better okay ? you could tell him anything and suddenly he wants to put it to the test

| • so when you said you could drink a bunch of cups of coffee and wouldnt bat an eye ,, he was immediately like bet and then that led to the current situation

| • perceptor is facepalming and immediately making brainstorm take blame for encouraging you to do this ,, because now theres a hyperactive human running around the lab

| • i mean you're practically flying around with how much coffee youve drank ,, hell you could probably beat blurr in a race

| • official you wouldnt say that out loud because lord knows some of his fans to be a bit crazy and would immediately be on your case saying "no you wouldn't !!" and maybe a few death threats involved as well

| • dont mention it in front of brainstorm either because hes already calling blurr to set you up for a race

| • hes no help ,, dont ever tell him your ideas or encourage his crazy ideas unless you wanna end up in magnus's office ,, having him scold you like a dad does to their child who drew on the walls and is trying not to laugh at the situation

- perceptor

| • thanks to brainstorm ,, you chugged too much coffee than your body ever really needed ,, and with perceptor as your not-so-official-but-official-in-his-mind-protector-slash-guardian-slash-alien-robot-boyfriend-slash-fun-killer he just sighs and takes you out the lab

| • he doesnt have the patience to deal with any acidic spills from you bouncing off the walls left and right

| • nor does he really need you getting hurt in any way shape or form

| • lets just say its an awkward trip to the medbay to see if ratchet has anything to help with your situation

| • and when he comes up empty handed ,, percy resorts to scolding you whilst the caffeine starts to wear off

| • it taught you better than to listen to brainstorm again because bro was yapping at 100 words per minute you swore he couldve talked faster than blurr at that point

| • bro was an absolute chatterbox just yapping and yapping that you fell asleep

| • never again would you do that ,, or think about doing that because the headache afterwards when you woke up was so not worth it

- chromedome

| • he also doesnt know any better ,, but he's definitely more responsible than brainstorm is

| • he'd know to at least keep a lot of caffeine or high sugar products out of your reach ,, just hiding it on your top shelves or above your cabinets like parents do with their kids' halloween candy

| • though when you accidentally made too much coffee ,, and didnt really feel like wasting it ,, you drank it all in one go ,, or well multiple big ass gulps

| • and then rewind walks in on the scene and sees how hyper you are and is honestly thinking youre sick with some make-a-person-crazy-illness-virus-disease-thing that he swears is somewhere in his database

| • and now chromedome has to play dad and parent you the whole time

| • bro probably put your ass on a leash ,, locking it in so the rope only goes so far and just stands there as you run around

| • this is what he gets ,, he thinks to himself ,, its the last time hes putting something so low in your reach again

| • at this point ,, hes just gonna store all your unhealthy and junk food away in a desk in his habsuite

| • he'll leave you fruit and vegetables but if you want coffee ever again youre gonna have to behave really good to get it

| • and its only a spoonful ,, as a little treat

- cyclonus

| • so you just trying to show and answer tailgates crazy ass questions that youre not even sure where he got them from

| • he probably got them from his ass at this point ,, asking if the coffee gives you super powers and you have to explain thats not true before he spreads lies around

| • and if that happened ,, you shivered at the thought of magnus banning your coffee aboard the lost light

| • that was pure trauma to even think about right there

| • anyways you made too much ,, and instead of storing it away or pouring it down the drain ,, tailgate dared you to drink it all

| • and well ,, momma aint raise no pussy but she did raise someone who makes bad decisions

| • because the moment you get your spurge of energy tailgate runs to cyclonus and tells him all about it

| • bros going on and on about how youve lost your mind and he thinks youre gonna die and cyclonus had like 600 heart attacks right then and there

| • he busts in like hes the damn swat team ,, door kicked down and pieces of it flying everywhere as you're running around like a wild banshee

| • he's looking for the demon and meanwhile youre out here acting like a damn demon ,, almost frothing at the mouth from how insane you are from the coffee

| • lets just say it makes magnus ban tailgate from ever daring you to do anything ,, bans you from having your coffee ,, and bans cyclonus for ever kicking down a door like that ever again because it was so unnecessary

was doing a dive into tfwiki and found this little fun fact for scrapped idw quickswitch

its funny to imagine the crew come together and build a baby, but whats funnier is the implication that this would be the second time megatron has witnessed the birth of a super warrior (overlord) but also the second time Prowls influence led to his ex building a super soldier (tarantulas saying without prowl ostaros would have never existed/ chromdome performing mnemosurgery on overlord bc of prowl)

quickswitch beating springer at the number of dads game

My poor little meow meow Prowl is loosing—

Like man, how does that sad little meow meow not evoke pity? Even in the slightest?

He was beaten to a pump by Optimus, refused to be killed in the name of mercy, mind controlled and almost killed his comrade which would probably make him feel really guilty, betrayed by who he thought were friends, had needles stuck in the back of his head by CHROMEDOME just to get rid of his memories unconsensually, probably has quite a bit of trauma from sending people out to die but do you think he had ever wanted too? Probably not, but it was his job and if he was going to do it, he was going to do it with the least amount of casualties. And people forgave Megatron of all Cybertronians, who killed almost an entire race and species with his bare hands and many more, but didn’t forgive Prowl just because he didn’t change his thoughts and opinions.

Welp, that was a bit of a long rant— but yeah, this is just my opinion, Megatron is still great and I love him, but I will always vote Prowl :D

One word: Packaging.

Or more specifically, the way he packages his pain.

(I’m not sure if you’re looking for an actual answer, but I’m gonna give one since I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Keep in mind that a lot of this is speculation.)

Quantifiably, Prowl did far less horrible things than Megatron, but Megatron has (1) a secure place in the franchise, (2) a redemption arc, and (3) looks*.

*so most fans say, anyway. My opinion on this fluctuates.

Also, Megatron’s reaction to his struggles is very different from Prowl’s.

When he’s in pain emotionally, Megatron directs it toward himself for the most part. Same with Starscream, Chromdome, and several others who have been through hell in the war.

But Prowl? Prowl refuses to acknowledge his wounds and takes it out on those around him and the world at large. His need for control is rooted in deep insecurity and a feeling of not being safe anywhere or with anyone. Even Tarantulas of all people picked up on Prowl’s desperate need to convince himself he was in control even when he really wasn’t. That tips me off to the depth of Prowl’s pain and self-deception, which he’s almost entirely numb to.

Most people will have more pity for someone like Megatron, Chromedome, or even Starscream who struggle in an obvious or self-pitying way versus someone like Prowl whose pain drives him to antagonize others and act like he can’t ever be wrong. It’s easier for most fans in the TF fandom to look at Prowl and blame him for his problems because of his outward pomposity. And in some cases, it’s true.

At the end of the day, a contrite or self-pitying sufferer gets more pity than a pompous one. Chromedome is the former and Prowl is most certainly the latter.

This was going to be longer because I have a lot more to say about this topic, but I cut it short because I believe I answered your question adequately. The rest will have to go in another post on main. That is, if I decide to share it at all. I still hold my breath every time I bring up IDW Prowl.

I talked about this like a long time ago

But Rodimus’ arc of asshole to lovable goof in MTMTE is so good because he actually does something about his flaws

Rodimus recognizes that allowing Overlord on the ship was a bad idea and that it was a shit thing to make Drift take the blame. He expresses to Minumus how he doesn’t want to die because its a cheap way out of facing consequences. He allows the crew to vote on whether he stays or not and when hes given the list of people who (supposedly) wanted him off he never acted on it. And most importantly when Drift and Ratchet return to the LL he sits down and has a talk with Drift where he apologizes.

That’s not something we really see with other character who do shitty things

Optimus never apologizes for any of the shit he does. He never faces any consequences for his police brutality or blackmailing Soundwave or conquering of Earth or taking advantage of peoples beliefs. He gets called out on it but in the end no one he actually cares about says it to his face. In MTMTE Ratchet and Rodimus have a moment where Ratchet tells him the list of people who voted for him to leave the LL was fake because he wasn’t on it. That’s an important impactful thing for him to hear because Ratchet is someone he knows and someone who hes friends with. OP never gets that and thus never really shows any regrets for the shit he does.

Chromdomes (a MTMTE character who I have a LOT to say about-) commits this disgusting intrusive violation of privacy against Prowl by forcing his way into his brain and erasing his memory of a threat to tell Rewind. Chromedome never faces ANY consequences for this. He is called out for this in front of the man who is most well known for being a stickler for rules and laws and instead of being questioned Magnus takes his side and literally insult the victim. He actively hides important stuff from his husband and shows no regret for what he did. There’s not even a conversation in the comics where someone is just like “hey man that was kinda fucked up”.

But for Rodimus we do see his regret

We see him actively take steps to atone for his mistakes

and its just

So nice to see

Hes a good character
