possibly a long-shot, but could anyone possibly point me in the direction of some resources on sewing that focus on either “mens” clothing, or more gender neutral stuff? it feels like all the beginner patterns and books i can find have skirts and dresses as their main focus, which i certainly won’t wear, and none of the women in my life tend to wear that sort of stuff either, and it feels like a waste to make a bunch of skirts for practice just for them to get chucked in the back of a wardrobe. any recommendations for online resources (youtube, blogs, etc) or physical books would be very welcome. thanks!

okay I have what might be a stupid question but google wasn't super helpful - in terms of pattern making, what size range generally makes a pattern size inclusive? both so I can evaluate the patterns I'm seeing and because I'm working up to make my first ever piece from scratch, and if it goes well I want to know what I'm aiming for if I figure out how to publish it
In my experience, sizes from XXS to 5X are usually included when a pattern/brand describes itself as "inclusive". I might be wrong, but I don't think their is one solid definition.
I'll open this up to the community--what do yall look for in a pattern for it to be size inclusive?

THE EVIL HAS BEEN VANQUISHED!
I have been crocheting this stupid bolero with a 2mm needle since December. I didn't even think I would like it when it's done but it does look a tiny bit pirate-y and for now I like it.

As a fat person, I am so fucking tired of trying to find clothes that fit, look good, and won't require me to cook meth with one of my former students in order to afford them. I've decided to start learning how to make my own damn clothes.
I have 0 knowledge and 0 supplies. Any learning resources, tips on what I need to get started, easy patterns to learn on, etc, would be greatly appreciated! Feel free to DM me or reply to this!

There’s a lot of fantastic costuming in the Terror, but Lt Irving’s Carnivale getup is one of my favorites, not just bc it’s adorable and he’s my favorite character but also bc of the Watsonian implications. Was dressing up as an angel his idea, or did it start as a joke from somebody else? Did he make those wings himself? Who helped him tie them on? Why did they do it like a shibari harness?? I’m obsessed.
Anyway, I’ve been dressing my dolls up since I was a kid, and now that I’ve got some actual sewing and design skills I figured it might be fun to try and replicate it (this is very much inspired by @/veresfika ‘s victorian drawing mannequin post, I’ve been wanting to do something like that for ages!!)
This is where we’re at after 4 hours and 48 minutes of work - I know this number because that’s the exact length of the audiobook for At The Mountains of Madness, which I decided to relisten to on a whim. I forgot that the narrator specifically mentions seeing Mt Erebus and Mt Terror and got excited when they came up, lol
After a lot of trial and error with making something akin to a pattern, and then lots of hand-sewing, the coat is actually looking like a coat!! What a concept. Next step is fixing the collar situation and putting the tails on, tho I may take a break from sewing and make his hat or his flask or something next

This year, because of a number of reasons, (I found a few sewing shops close to wear I live, I'm sick of shitty made goods, It's difficult to find things in my style in my price range, making things is fun, etc) I decided to buy a cheap used sewing machine and make my own clothes.
This is the stuff I made over the course of the year in order of which ones I made first.
First dress. Pretty frumpy, I'm going to recycle the fabric and make something else.
Second dress. You can see the mistakes in the stitching if you look close but I like how I look in it.
Little red shorts. Pants are HARD! It fits me a little funny, but I've never loved my pockets more on anything I've ever had than I do on these shorts. You can't see them but they're really big.
Third dress. The first time I tried to do sleeves. Sleeves are hard. I had to redo them 3 times and I still don't like how they came out, but I got this fabric on sale and I get a lot of compliments when I wear this one.
First shirt and first long pair of pants. Once again, pants are HARD. They don't quite fit me right. I'll likely recycle them. The shirt came out a little poofier than I would have liked but it's comfortable.
Fourth dress. The bottom part came from another dress that I retooled. The top part I did by myself. You can't see it but the zipper in the back is a little messed up but I think with light jacket or cardigan you wouldn't know.
Fifth dress. I'm really proud of how well this one fit me. I think it's cute but the way I cut the fabric, there's just this big pink spot on my belly area.
Sixth dress. I went back to rework this one so many times I eventually just had to put it down and say "It's good enough to call finished."
Seventh dress. Probably the dress I'm most proud of. It fits really well and I didn't have to go back and redo anything. Came out looking like this on the first try.
Not clothes, just some stuffed animals I made for my young students with some left over fabric I had.
My most comfortable pair of pants yet. Still not perfect. I can't exactly do the splits in them without worry of ripping but I like them.
My purse. I quite like the way it came out. I get a lot of compliments on it.
Here's hoping by next year I'll have some better pieces.

(Ehehehehe I'm wearing a couch!! >:D)
Got this Jerkin pattern from a friend, luckily we're around the same size so alterations weren't too hard. Still got a little bit to go, and I'm thinking of slashing and pinking it, but progress!!

people who know how to sew on tumblr, i need a little help. i started sewing my prom dress for the 29th with my janome 7025. my fabric is a glittery stretch fabric, and it wasn't causing me any problems for most of the dress' construction. but for some reason, my machine stopped stitching into it at some point?? it just leaves holes wherever the needle went. i've tried re-threading everything, changing the tension, using a zigzag stitch, i did my best to clean the glitter/lint out of my bobbin holder, and still nothing. it's not my machine, bc it sews through other fabrics just fine, i think the fabric is the problem. does anybody have a (preferably cheap) solution to this?? any tips are appreciated!

Should I go absolutely nuts and make cargo bell bottom slacks with a pastel floral print unknown fabric?
(It's almost like a linen visually? I'm pretty sure it's knit. The print looks like upholstery but it's too soft and slinky for that)
(My grandma gave me six bags of mystery fabric from someone's aunt's closet a few months ago and I have so many projects I want to start/have started)
(If I remember, when I wash them finally I'll share what I've already made)

Anyone else prefer to learn really convoluted ways of doing the basics of a hobby by jumping straight in with a project that is incredibly Above Their Paygrade?
Yeah me either 🙂
