big enrichment upgrade for nelly :]

i am SO proud of how this came out, finally i have been able to fill out some vertical space in her tank!! i made a big order from josh's frogs of artificial plants and cork bark and she is loving it so far it seems :) i wasn't planning on doing artificial plants for this enclosure but the real ones weren't doing too hot, and the tank really needed to be filled out. plus, enrichment is more important than aesthetics :) thankfully in this case i think the artificial plants against the cork bark looks really amazing!! nelly's already having lots of fun climbing and exploring her new furnishings :]

enclosure is a 4x2x2 Kages PVC, substrate is biodude terra firma, lots of cork bark, various woods (spider, mopani, manzanita), DHP and RHP heating with a full spectrum LED for lighting.

Mad Spring - sour gummies, you feral little goblin. Tangfastics. Airheads. Sour Patch Kids. Like High Summer, you choose fruit-flavored gummy sweets, but you pick ones coated in Pain Sugar. It isn’t enough to just get sugar: you’re chasing a different Sensory Experience (TM) than the rest. And that’s great.

Warm Spring - white chocolate, ruby chocolate, pastel mint drops, cotton candy, bubblegum. Marshmallows. Sweet, creamy, usually pastel. You have no particular objection to floral tastes like lavender and rose. You may be able to appreciate Turkish Delight.

Midsummer - tropical fruits: chewy and slightly creamy in pastel colors. Starburst/Opal Fruit, Creamsicles/Solero. Maoam strips. Cream sodas. Skittles, despite being jewel-toned, are in this season. Coconut and pineapple flavors go here. Also the home of chalky-type sweets like Love Hearts/candy hearts, smarties (usa) and You may be also able to appreciate Turkish Delight.

High Summer - Gummy bears and chewy, jellyish, jammy, gummy, springy in bright jewel tones. Gummy worms and jelly snakes, jelly babies, jelly beans, Haribo. Clearer and gummier than Midsummer.

Autumn Night - darker and more complex sweetness, often including an element of burning or alcohol, or another challenge. Cherry cordials, marzipan, champagne truffles. Also home of burnt-sugar tastes: maple candy, bonfire toffee, candy corn. Also home of matcha; red liquorice; red bean paste. When people bring you sweets from other countries, they’ll choose unusual local delicacies. You almost certainly were fascinated as a kid by lollipops at the science museum sold with real bugs in them.

Autumn Salt - peanut butter and peanut brittle, salted caramel, toffee, butterscotch. Toffee popcorn, Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, Snickers, Daim. If nobody has any nuts, you’ll choose chocolate with nuts, crisp or crunch over other things. Sweet just isn’t enough.

Winter Spice - herbal, spicy and medicinal sweets, usually hard old-fashioned sweets. Red-hots, burning cinnamon, chilli - eucalyptus, root beer, menthol; sarsaparilla. Hard candy, generally: old fashioned ‘boiled sweets,’ things that look gorgeous in glass jars. Parma violets. Fisherman’s Friends. You’re the only person who would eat a gingerbread house after decorating it. You’re also possibly a ghost, or used to be a Mad Spring. It’s also about the SENSATION.

Midwinter - dark black Licorice. Salty? Sweet? saltlakrids? Allsorts? Australian? You might like other things too, but when your loved ones are in another country, they go to the licorice aisle and get you the weirdest local variant they can find.

Long Winter - true chocolate, basic chocolate stuff: M&Ms. Dairy Milk. Hershey’s Kiss. But also home of fudgy tastes and sugar-on-sugar in a long slow sauce. Marshmallow, Handmade fudge, Phish Food ice cream.

Cool Winter - naturally, the homebase of minty tastes. peppermint wheels, York’s Peppermint Patties, After Eights. Also orange - chocolate orange - and, oddly, pixie sticks/sherbet and other sweet things that involve eating simple flavored sugar.

TIL ultras are the result of hybridization. And I have an ultra who I'm raising up to be a breeder. Sheesh, I'm not really against hybridization (and it doesn't effect my breeding plans) but the fact that I didn't know that even though I did basic research on the gene really does support what anti-hybrids people say about hybrids not being disclosed to the public and that being a problem!

The same is true of the Scaleless gene, as well as Rootbeer, Creamsicle, and Cinnamon. I've definitely seen experienced breeders offering these morphs (as well as Ultra) who weren't advertising or possibly weren't even aware that these were imported genes. It's not discussed often enough in hobbyist circles.

I think as long as we all collectively promise not to release pet snakes of any species into the wild it's not so big an issue, but yeah this is definitely why some folks are staunchly anti-hybrid.

Ultimately, the takeaway from this situation is to know your snakes, learn your genes, and be Very Honest when you're selling snakes that you've bred if they might not be 100% corn snake.

Be aware of the native species in your area, too. If there's even the remotest chance that an escaped pet could be introducing hybrid genes to a wild population, then you should be especially vigilant or possibly even rethink the species you keep.

i had to gently ease/move her head and neck back into the enclosure Multiple times because she kept trying to come out and find more food. i literally had to hold my hand infront of her face while closing the glass door because she kept trying to leave 😭 i'm glad she's getting so much more confident though!! i'll just have to keep a closer eye on her i guess LOL

History:

Formerly the eldest Tristesse daughter, Vesper gained a new start when he left Venterre for Zadith. There he was able to transition and learn magic, which he was surprised to have something of an affinity for. Many of his teachers suggested he pursue alchemy but he refused, despite excelling in sciences. It was a sore subject, as science was something he wanted to persue as a child but was not permitted to.

In his childhood, he was very clearly the favorite of the family. Pampered by his parents, until Amaryllis unintentionally snatched his spotlight away. Going from loved to shunned did a lot of damage, and his mother used his vulnerability against him. Her goal was to push him over the edge; and for him to take it out on Amaryllis. Eventually he does, picking a fight with his sibling that escalated quickly, ending with a scarred Amaryllis. Vesper was burned by their magic, and is left with two vaguely hand shaped burns around each wrist. When Amaryllis disappears he feels victorious, but he soon realizes the truth about his parents. He comes out, and is disowned.

After the plague has stopped, he finds himself in Vesuvia, where it doesn’t take him very long to run into an Amaryllis who has no clue who he is. Having desired the chance for forgiveness all these years, he uses the opportunity to “start over” with them, conveniently omitting the more unsavory details of their shared past.

Hurricane Irma didn't hit my home hard. I took my husband, sister, and 10 animals and evacuated to Missouri to hang with a friend because we were expecting bad things. I am glad my home has only lost power according to my roommate. I'm heading back home now and then when we get power back I can't wait to draw again. Unfortunately one of my snakes passed on the trip up. I miss him dearly. Everyone else is fine so I am thankful.

Todoroki is a nonvenomous Creamsicle Corn snake

Todoroki is easily considered one of the most powerful nagas despite being nonvenomous, able to set his being ablaze and at the same time freeze ice across his scales

Especially when he could use his tail to create a fire/freeze burn whip, along with being able to easily trap you within his coils, daring you to attempt to try and leave when freezer burn is such a possible fate

Todoroki can easily defend you, just his scent radiating off of you is enough to alert anyone that they’ll get their ass beat if they dare to mess with you

He’ll drag you back and forth from forest to city, enjoying the atmospheres both areas create, being able to have you all to himself in the forest taking you away from any responsibilities just to rely on natural resources and relax, giving in to his natural primal behavior and treating you as a mate, hunting down food and gifts as you admire the sunlight passing through the leaves of the trees above you, naturally curling around you time to time scenting you down as his own while keeping you both warm on the cold night, creating a small source of warmth on the tip of his tail

Being more civilized in the city giving you space while grocery shopping instead of hunting down raw wild animals for you. Covering the bed you share in all sorts of soft blankets and pillows, a few plushies here and there as your little nest, always replacing old blankets with new even more comfortable for his cute little mates nest

Just because he’s calmer in the city doesn’t mean he won’t go ballistic when someone dares to hurt you, quick to have primal urges take over ripping through any sort of threat he sees on his path, todoroki wont let a finger be laid upon you during his tunnel vision like behavior

nelly conducted a very important cereal box investigation today. results are ... approved :)

i like putting new and interesting (and of course, safe—no sharp points/edges, so sticky stuff, etc) items in nelly's enclosure every so often, like paper towel tubes or other recycling. today's item is a cereal box. i actually put it in there a couple days ago but this was her first time coming out to explore since her meal on saturday. she began her investigation with a big drink of water from her pool/bowl and has been in and out of the box since. i take the random items out if they get wet or when i notice she hasn't really been interested them in a few days, or just whenever.

this is also, accidentally, a great way to show how much she's grown recently!!!! look at her!!! my big cranky monster!!!
