*Warning, this is gonna be a ridiculously long post...

So, some of you reeeeally wanted to know just a teeny weenie bit more about my weird boy huh? Well, here ya go:

Yeah, where do I freakin' start with this--? It was not only hard to put together despite the very simple (and more obvious) inspirations... but I had to mega ponder whatever the heck I was on when creating this character, LOL

Lets break it down all over again:

It is extremely obvious (I think) of which characters Tilde's appearance mostly stems from... our funny scout robots from Cave Story: Mr. Traveler and Curly Brace themselves. (Which heehee geddit he has a punctuation naem TILDE ~~ xdd)

I'm pretty sure some of you have probably assumed (Especially with how much I pair them together...^^") Tilde is... well... their kid somehow--

Not... quite? It's... much more complicated than that, don't worry about it! Anyways, I basically chucked them both into a blender to combine their appearances together as much as possible; an example of this is Tilde's hair! It's a blonde color like Curly's and straight; but has a waviness, spiking up at the ends like Quote's hair.

Tilde's antenna earphone things are green, and his eye color is also that bluescreen blue that Curly has as well, lol.

So Tilde's outfit inspirations! Tilde is actually wearing Sue Sakamoto's sweater, along with someone's long green scarf. Its a bit old and worn out... but it's very shnazzy, dontcha think? ^^ In earlier drawing drafts of Tilde back in 2021, his sleeves were actually much more sprite accurate to Sue's-- But then I played OneShot and drew them droopy like Niko's once and it... stuck. idc its staying too. I think I wanted to give him a cuteness bonus, so I gave him hairpins thanks to Chase from Harvest Moon lol

Underneath Tilde's sweater he is wearing a simple black tank with magenta shorts, like Quote's tank and sprite Curly's pants. His shoes I unfortunately don't have a direct correlation for their colors, but they're inspired by Cave Story 3D JP Curly's shoes.

A much more rare appearance, but this is what Tilde looks like as an adolescent-- Don't question why, just roll with it-- I have my reasons and I won't tell you :^) When I was drawing him, my brain just handed me Basil from Omori. Literally, just Basil's energy and a bit of the Mother series protagonists for outfit design... I tried to swishing it around a bit and ended up with a very puntable looking guy, which was the exact vibe I was going for~ >:3c

I gave Tilde a sweater turtleneck and called it a day, then Lucas came to mind again when I was coloring-- Which overall made this particular bit of the outfit more interesting ^^ Tilde here is also wearing Toroko's pendant. Not really much else to cover here, since the many traits from Tilde's youth carries into here. Continuing...

Oh boy, how the times have changed and he's all grown up now T_T

Tilde when he's older takes almost all the liberties from especially Quote, wearing his infamous deadpan expression naturally... but he still remains extremely expressive like Curly ^^

Tilde's outfit is very obviously influenced by them, from their cargo pants to their color schemes (which are also admittedly being carried from his youth as well.) Quote's Blade Strangers design (If you ever heard of it.) was definitely an influence for him as well--

BUT to keep him looking a bit more fresh, I devised to use even more of that special jrpg sauce i love to throw on my characters lmAO

Y'all should already know from my previous post that I'm a weeb a Japanese culture enthusiast, not gonna explain that again

Specially for his outfit Tetsuya Nomura's character designs immediately come to mind, i cannot tell you which one specifically.

While imagining the "cool rpg boy outfit" all these characters blend together in my head, probs because they seem to have similar vibes LOL (very cool Nomura-san)

100% CERTAIN Felix from Golden Sun had an influence on Tilde's outward appearance. I actually drew older Tilde before teen Tilde, and I gave him long hair partly bc of him-- lmao

(While Soren from Fire Emblem is not a main influence for Tilde, he is simply here because I hate him for making me realize long haired dudes are just,,, peak character design idk what to tell you.)

Final part! Thanks for coming along for the ride. More of the mafia au will likely be posted today, I really want to write some death scenes in between some irl craft projects.

Meanwhile, aboard the Nemesis, Megatron was scheming. Due to the war, they were running into a bit of a gene pool problem. Namely, throwing an entire city state's worth of genetic diversity into a blender and creating a mass produced army out of whatever gene sequence it spits out had worked to preserve diversity and allow the lower ranks to continue adding to the population without ruining evolution for the future, but it also meant that the genetic makeup of any offspring born was a crapshoot. Unfortunately, being a grounder was a very, very dominant trait.

But, the human converts were special in that they had a completely new set of genetic traits. Sure, Dani would likely be a helicopter, but compared to archived gene sequences, she would be comparable to a bot that came from a long lost and isolated colony, perfect for putting some variety back into the gene pool. But first, the obvious problem was that she hadn't been converted yet.

The discoveries were made on Miko and Raf's genetic testing results, not hers.

And, of course, she was far too small to be a good carrier or even a Sire, not without heavy medical intervention, and Megatron already knew that even encouraging her and Blades to bond would be an arduous task.

Luckily, Shockwave had done plenty of growth tank experiments in his time during the war, and had the science down to an easily repeatable procedure, one, when tested, that can be bundled with the conversion process, as long as there is enough access to the subjects bloodstream at time of submersion, particularly in the extremities.

In other words, Megatron has to cut Dani's arms and legs to get the liquid cyber metal to her feet and hands.

This is going to be fun.

Megatron had never before been able to use a blade on a human before, preferring to either shoot or squish them on the battlefield.

Megatron walked into the two autobot turncoats' berth room, Dani glaring at him from her little pile of blankets, shivering in her oversized garment that had replaced her flight suit. He had read from Knockout's report that during a run to get supplies to treat her monthly… affliction, she had been spotted and tracked down by a store associate who had seen her missing poster, and tried to get her away from Breakdown. In the confusion, Breakdown had run him over, splattering her with blood. The damage done has been fully healed, and now they could move on to the next stage of the process.

Megatron took out the clear box of stickers that Shockwave had loaded up with nanotechnology in. To Dani's horror, they were skimpy and gold, getting the reference immediately.

Blades, bless his sweet spark, did not.

(My beta told me no to making Dani naked twice in one one-shot, so we compromised by making her censor bars a Rocky Horror reference. Yes, Dani and Blades are supposed to be Janet and Brad coded. Unfortunately, there is no Rocky, because, well, there's child characters here. Tarn is already pushing a lot here. So, instead of learning all about kink and throwing away the last of their innocence, Dani and Blades are learning about the war and throwing away their black and white view of it.)

"Have Dani apply these to the skin. Shockwave tells me that there is a diagram of where they need to go included. If you don't get them all applied before Knockout comes to retrieve you, Shockwave will do them himself. Blades, after Dani leaves, you will be moved to a new room." Megatron left, leaving them alone. Blades took out the stickers, realizing that this would have to be a two person job. He found the ones meant to go on her chest.

"How about you start with these? I mean, we did swap bodies, so nothing I haven't seen before, but…"

Dani nodded, a whirlwind of embarrassment and horror going through her head as she took off her dress and bra, Blades setting a mirror in front of her and looking away respectfully as she put the two circles over her breasts, trying not to think about the huge, hulking, one eyed monster of a bot that would soon be touching her for some likely sick purpose.

She looked through the other sheets and found another set meant for her crotch, resembling those adhesive edged fabric thongs some actors used in movie shoots. Luckily, it was large enough that the razor included could stay sealed in its flowery pink packaging.

She added a few to her sunken belly and skeletal ribcage. Her time at the Nemesis had her losing every scrap of fat on her body, leaving her feeling freezing and hollow all the time. She quickly put the stickers meant for her legs and feet on, not feeling safe until she slipped her pants on. It was weird. Being topless made her feel less exposed than having her legs out.

"Blades? A little help here?" Dani said, picking up the stickers meant for her neck and back. Blades oh so delicately placed the last two stickers, ruffling her hair after he was done.

"This might be a bit inappropriate due to circumstances outside of our control, but you will always be the prettiest human I have ever gotten the pleasure of knowing, no matter what happens. Charlie, your brothers, Chase, and Boulder would all be so proud of us for making it this far together. I am so proud of you for making it this far. I promise, if the worst comes to worst, I will bury you the way we couldn't bury your family. I love you, Dani."

Dani wiped away a tear. "Aw, I love you too Blades."

The door to the room opened, and Knockout stepped in. Dani took off her pants and climbed onto his outstretched hand without a word.

"Primus, fleshy, it is far too cold on the ship to be walking around without a blanket." Knockout picked up a thin, stained one that usually ended up between her and the rest of her blankets when she was on her period. He threw it over her shoulders and walked down to Shockwave's lab, leaving Blades to quickly clean up the trash and store anything of use in his subspace.

Shockwave took her from Knockout and laid her on her belly, setting the blanket aside. Dani didn't dare breathe as he took a pair of tweezers and readjusted the sticker on her back. "Everything is satisfactory. Knockout, administer the priming injection."

"Dani, sit up, cross your legs, put your elbows on your knees, and face away from me." Knockout said while he uncapped the syringe and Shockwave scooped out a glob of the cleaning gel that Dani had been subjected to more then once after she had begun to stink due to not being able to shower regularly.

Dani scrambled to follow directions, hissing as her shoulders were wiped with the freezing cold gel. She willed herself to stay still as Knockout plunged the needle into her shoulder and emptied the syringe into the muscle there. They had given her vaccinations in that shoulder, too, but drew blood from her head.

Knockout removed the syringe and moved in front of Dani. "Lie back, and relax your face as much as possible. I need a blood sample." Knockout took plenty of blood from her before looking at Shockwave.

Shockwave picked her up and set her on a new tray. He pressed a button on the side of it, and Dani yelped as the sticker on her spine magnetized to the tray, keeping it straight. "Testing successful. Begin energon injections to the thighs, along with shallow lacerations to improve cyber metal distribution and speed up the process."

"This is my specialty." Megatron said, stepping away from the wall where he had been watching the proceedings. He took a scalpel from Knockout and carefully cut symmetrical lines into Dani's thighs and forearms. Knockout injected energon inside each cut, Dani shivering as he wiped the blood from them onto her belly.

Dani cried out and scratched at Knockout's hands as he lowered her into the growth vat.

Her red blood turned the clear yellow liquid a light pink, and once the tank was full, Shockwave introduced the cyber metal, the stuff settling in the tank in bubbles and streaks. Shockwave pressed another button, and Dani felt nauseous, her eyes closing for the last time.

"Oh, she's beautiful." Knockout said as the tank emptied and the top swung open. He had a towel open to wrap around her as soon as Megatron and Shockwave pulled her out of the tube.

She was truly a stunning femme, even in just the new protoform silver and gray. Once she chose a paint job, she would likely have half the seeker armada tripping over themselves for a shot with her. She was going to be a helicopter, at least. The bump on her back where new rotors would sprout and unfurl once she scanned an alt mode stuck out like a sore thumb. Her plating had an organic curve to it, with virtually no harsh edges at all.

Shockwave had to stop her from getting out of the tube on her own, taking her arms and helping to lift her out of the tank. Knockout wrapped her in the towel, and they bundled her into a wheelchair. Her eyes were still offline, the growth cycle finishing earlier than expected. They wheeled her to Blades' new room, him being informed of the true intentions of the experiment only minutes ago. Still, he had a shift to finish, and Knockout assured him that she would be in stasis until he could help her.

The minute he could finish up his training to be a nurse with Breakdown for the day, he raced back to his suite. As promised, a stasis machine was hooked up to her, and he carefully unhooked her from it and held her hand until she woke up.

He happily helped Dani, who passed almost all the memory recall checks, out of the wheelchair and into their seated shower, where Blades assisted her in cleaning off the clear yellow goo that clung to her plating. The temporarily blind bot kept feeling his face over and over again, as if she expected him to be gone the next time she checked.

That morning, she woke up to him squeezing one of her hands while they slept in their bed, Blades having to plug her into the recharge dock with little awkward touches against her head.

This was her new reality now.

A menial job on this dark, oppressive ship, with this orange mech sleeping alongside her, all without her consent or a measure of control.

At least she won't starve.

At least she doesn't have to be alone.

There was just one last test to be done.

Cody walked through the ground bridge, his confident posture and wicked grin strange on his young face.

In the panic of the omega lock pointed at earth, no one was paying attention to the drugged up, half mad Rescue Bot.

Cody walked into the cell block and walked right through the bars. The man he believed to have led his family to their deaths, tripping over himself to pick him up.

"Heatwave, I have a secret for you. Do you want to know?"

The grief addled bot nodded like an over excited little kid, and Cody smiled.

All Cody had to do to prove himself was whisper a single word.

"Die."

The bot's spark imploded with a soft pop, not a single drop of energon split. He reached into his ear and tapped his com link. "Nickel, I'm done here."

A ground bridge opened, and he ran back through to his Sire, failing to wipe the excited grin off his face. Tarn kneeled down and picked up the tiny minicon, his holoform flickering off as he hugged his Sire's finger. The Peaceful Tyranny was hiding behind the Nemesis, being secretly space bridged in to help Megatron hunt down any loose ends, the perfect initiation test for the newest member of the DJD.

"Good work, Darkmount." Tarn said, placing him back into his chest cavity.

Before long, the theme song to some human cartoon Raf downloaded off the internet and passed to him on one of their informal play dates while Tarn talked to high command played obnoxiously from the vid screen, Tarn long since abandoning the hopes of hearing anything but squeaky voices and bubbly background music after a hunt.

Tarn could feel Darkmount stretch inside him. He sent a feeling of pride into their still new parental spark bond.

Darkmount sent it back, a feeling of sleepiness accidentally slipping alongside it.

Darkmount was getting better at that, but still made silly little mistakes with the bond at times. However, he was flawless in the field, burrowing into the plating of much bigger mechs and killing them from the inside, removing any witnesses while Tarn and the rest of the DJD took care of the main victim.

And, of course, he was a glutton for attention at times. If he wanted it, that is. If he got it into his head that he didn't want to be picked up or held, Tarn would walk away with bite marks and a very grumpy microcon cuddled into the crook of his elbow or clinging to his tank treads. He did, in fact, scan an alt mode.

He had fought a small swarm of a savage pointer, a smaller subspecies of the common bulbous scraplet, and with some help from Vos, scanned a live one for his alt mode.

If he focused, he could hover in the air. The Pet was terrified of him, and he could now wander the ship as he pleased.

A few months later, Darkmount woke up to a message from Raf saying that he now had two nephews. Apparently, Dani and Blades got busy fast after Dani recovered from the conversion. There was also a warning to Nickel that Dani experienced phantom contractions after the twins were born, and the only things that worked was a very high dose of pain meds and plenty of heat packs and cuddles from the helicopter that she chose to be with. He was a skittish thing, not a single bark and completely devoid of bite. It was fine, though. Dani had enough for the two of them.

Darkmount winced as he imagined his sister in excruciating pain for no other reason besides a coding error leftover from being human.

He wouldn't lift a hand to help her if it was inconvenient for him, but he still didn't want to see her dead.

He cuddled into Tarn's spark chamber and drifted off to sleep.

Another day, and a new hunt will begin.

ik you're not here as much now (understandable) but while i wasn't as active in the leverage fandom as you (mostly reblogging stuff, wrote a couple fics a while back) but. i am also struggling with where to put my deep love for the show (it is? was? one of my favorite shows) with what i've read. is it okay to love something that caused active harm to so many people? and the answer i keep coming back to is, i don't know. i wish i didn't know about any of this, but that wouldn't undo any of the behavior or anything, and besides which, i do know, and i don't know what to do with any of this or how to feel about it and i miss what i thought the show was. we're in this together; you are not the only one struggling in light of learning this. sending love and good thoughts for you <333333

<3<3<3<3 hey, thank you, it’s. a rough and complicated time, what DO we do with all of that love. like the love’s still there it’s still THERE but where do i PUT it. where does it Go. sigh

honestly i think the big Wall i keep hitting re: this is…Redemption? like there’s an alternate universe here where this is a show that ended 10 years ago and was allegedly created in a really toxic, harmful environment, but which was created by a Lot of people who all contributed to creating something that ended up being really wonderful. and in this alternate universe, i can see being able to be like…okay, i’ve never watched this show Legally, i can be Aware of this and Talk about this and just continue to not give money to the creators, and not interact with the cast and crew, and maybe that would be enough

Except that now it’s not like…ah yes we collectively wish hutton a very [redacted], now it’s “these people who were fostering this entire Environment and harming people are all still employed and still work together on new projects, one of which is leverage redemption, which arguably came into being in part as a result of people contributing to fandom and sustaining Interest in this show”, which now duct tapes Fandom Interaction to the ongoing relevance of this media property and the continued employment of the specific people named in that article, and like, hhhhhhhhh that’s my brain making blender sounds thinking about all of it

i also wish i didn’t know, i am also glad that i do know, i also miss what i thought this show was (and not immediately seeing This when seeing these characters) (and not having to, like, stare blankly at a series of google docs like “which will drive me insane faster: trying to finish these for the sake of finishing them or Leaving Them Incomplete”) it’s. yeah. i don’t know. there was a rug it has been pulled etc

very glad (comforted? encouraged? sad?) to know other folks are also struggling with this (i.e. that it is Not just me), i know some people have jumped ship completely, some have gone on haitus, some are like “yeah this isn’t an issue for me” and are continuing as normal, i personally am sitting in the half-collapsed pillow fort i built in a cozy corner of this fandom and being very sad about it. what do we do with the love!!!!! i do not know.

58. Baking therapy on a budget Ft. Genshin Characters: Alhaitham - Almond Blondies

Hello every birdy, today we are going to be making something that I honestly kind of threw together. When I was creating the recipe I had no idea if it was going to work or not. And I made this recipe in two different types: the first time was with raspberries and the second time was with peppermint candy canes.

Before we can get into the recipe we have to talk about the Character that inspired the post. None other than Alhaithum. He is the scribe for the Akadamia in Sumeru. He is responsible for writing down the things that Akadamia finds. As for his favorite food, he says that he values taste over looks. And that he will literally eat anything. Thank you to Hoyoverse for making characters like this. I know that only a few of us out there are excited to see a new character and immediately look at their favorite food.

Now on to the recipe.

I am going to tell you before I even start talking about it, You can use store-bought almond flour. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE YOUR OWN ALMOND FLOUR!! However, I have an odd problem right now and have been given a bunch of almonds. Enough for me to experiment with how to make almond flour. So yeah. Not something I ever thought I would do.

In order to make your almond flour, you first need to have blanched almonds. Yes, you need to blanch almonds for this part, because if you use almonds that have their skins still on, and proceed to grind them up, you made almond meal instead of almond flour.

You could either buy blanched almonds or if you are like and have a ton of almonds with their skins, you can blanch them yourselves. The only thing you are going to need with this process is time. There is probably a way to do this process faster. But I have yet to find it.

You will want to grab a pot and fill it about have way. Once the water has started to boil, you are going to place your almonds carefully into the pot. Let it cook for 1 minute. Yes, 1 minute is enough to blanch the almonds. You should have a colander in the sink, when the 1 minute is up you can drain the contents into the colander.

Soak them in cold water. This helps with two things: 1. It helps the almonds not be so hot and 2. It helps the almond skins come off faster.

Now is the long process of removing the skins of the almonds. They do come off really nice and fast, but depending on how many you have it will take a while. Make sure that you are doing this in a comfortable spot in your kitchen/dining room. I personally like doing this on the table. I have a comfortable chair, and I am watching some random Youtube Videos while I do it. It is oddly satisfying to do.

Preheat your oven to 225 F.

Once you have removed the skin, you are going to place them onto a cookie sheet. And let them dry in the oven for at least 10 minutes. You want the almonds to be dry before putting them in your food processor or blender. Because if you don’t you will be making almond butter. Good product, but not what you were really wanting.

Once it is out of the oven you are going to put in one cup of almonds at a time for about 1 minute into your blender or food processor. Place the contents into a container that will fit into the refrigerator.

Before turning off your oven you are going to increase the temperature to 350F. You are going to want to grease a square pan, either a 8X8 or 9X9 pan, which ever one you have.

The ingredients you are going to need are:

Almond flour

All-purpose flour

Baking powder

Baking soda

Melted butter

eggs

Powdered sugar

Some type of filling

Loosely measure out 1 cup of your almond flour. What I mean by this is don’t pack in the almond flour as you do with brown sugar, it is not going to be very good

Next, you are going to measure out about ½ cup of all-purpose flour. And then add in ½ teaspoon of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of baking soda.

Now you are going to melt your butter. The first time I made this recipe I used only ½ cup of melted butter and it tasted good, but it was just a bit off in the texture. So the next time I made it I added ½ of a cup because that is what my brownie recipe calls for 1 cup of melted butter. And it tasted really good.

You are going to add in your eggs.

I knew that I wanted to make this recipe taste somewhat like macarons, so instead of granulated sugar, I used a cup of powdered sugar.

For the next part, you are going to add your folded ingredient. The first time I made it I added raspberries and the second time I added peppermint candies. And I really didn’t have much of a measurement for each. All I can say is that I just eyeballed it and I remember thinking, “ I want enough for each person to get enough of this filling. I don’t want one person coming to me and being like that was good, but I didn’t get any of that filling that he/she did.”

I baked it for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick came out clean.

I was so concerned about this recipe. However, everyone was telling me how much they loved this recipe and they were impressed that I made it up as I went.

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean. Let cool at room temperature. Enjoy!

Week 3 Suplemental Development

Board Game Club:

The only new game that I played in Board Game Club this week was an expansion of Dominion, the deck building game played previously. As this introduced various new mechanics into the game it was very intereting to see the development of their use of affordances and iconography with more complex elements, though this was largley it.

Adventure Time:

As seen in my original moodboard created for my character design, Adventure time is a big inspiration for the art and asthetic of this game, and so I have been watching more of the show this week. Specifically taking note of their combination of simplistic and childlike design and style, combined with their cluttered and busy magical elements used through out the whole show specifically when designing enviroments.

It Takes Two:

In It Takes Two you play two characters that I have turned into small toys navigate the world as well as how its been warped and changes from the imaginative perspective of a child, all of which are elements that relate heavily to my game, being a mystical and magical world, seemingly invisible to the normal eye, happening around us at a much smaller scale.

Tears of the Kingdom Clothing:

I also found myself playing alot of Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom this week, but I found I spent a large amount of time not focusing on the main missions and story but interacting with two specific side parts of the game: the clothing/armour sets, and the home construction. I had two realisations from playing in relation to my project, one being that I want a strong focus on customisation when playing my game. The simple block building in Zelda gave me the idea that something very similar could be done in my game, as it will be using a grid system to build up your city, why not allow buildings to connect and even build on top of eachother, creating sprawling messes of settelments for your minions.

Additionally, I need elements for the players to do inbetween the loops of collecting, building, fighting, and what better element with a game focusing on lovable little minions than dressing them up. Different clothing options could be both hidden behind objectives, and craftable, using special tailor buildings, and collected resources, to give your favourite minions something to distinguish themselves.

Paper Craft Session:

During a session on concept art, we were shown a method by Jake of creating a collage to illustrate your idea, as it allows you to move peices around very quickly, and see how these small changes alter the feeling of the creation. I used various peices to quickly put together my minion character. My main problem was trying to show the scale of the character, and I quickly realised the problem was there wasnt anything to compare them to, so I used a splash page of a Heinz advertisment to try and show the scale and was immediately happy with the results.

Blender Project Project:

The next day I got to work creating the character in blender, as well as playing with various effects like subsurface scattering. While these real time lighting effects would not be viable for the actual game, there is potential for cheating it by creating a texture for the skin and ears specifically that suggest subsurface scattering, since I think it lends alot to the charecters small size.

FMP midway update

For my FMP(final major project) i have to create a game project proposal and present my ideas to investors, similarly to the television show shark tank.

For this I had to consider a variety of options as to what my game would develop into. Creating a project proposal helped me put my thoughts and ideas onto paper and start developing my base design ideas.

The Game initial context:

Title: Deep Drilling

Description: My plan is to have a Co-op, open world sandbox strategy game based around drilling/mining resources from select areas. The user must start drilling in the spawn area and eventually will discover new areas with better rewards, environments, and scenery. The drawbacks of this include a deeper strategy aspect, needing to plan to defeat stronger enemies, upgrading drills and storage to improve efficiency and unlock further advancements.

Interest: There will be intense strategy components to create an intricate factory while defending it from in game assets such as enemies. The user must create a farm profitable enough to create defences capable of keeping them safe. Another thing that will draw players in is the immediate satisfaction of creating a functional factory with upgraded defences and equipment.

Research: Looking at inspiration from “Miners Haven”, “Terratech” and “Slime rancher” for some design aspects and heavily inspiring gameplay mechanics. The specific rewards via certain areas from slime rancher is interesting and canonical. A great mechanic from my research sources is not only the mining feature from Terratech that uses mining refiners and more, when combined with the tools and mechanics from the Roblox game Miners Haven I feel like it will be a cohesive result.

Specialist: In the future I aspire to become a prop/character concept artist. What I am looking forward to creating is the creation and designs of the drills and scenery.

Techniques: I will be using specific software such as Photoshop for the initial ideas and final art pieces (Concept and Cover art) and Unity to construct the main assets of the game, including the gameplay mechanics.

User experience: A casual game with some combat scenes when the user must defend their land.

For this project, my deadline was 15 weeks but due to changes outside of my control it was reduced to 14 weeks. Because of this my timeline changed and my schedule became busier.

Originally I decided to spend most of my time in photoshop designing my artwork from there. Below I have posted some of the pieces created.

But after evaluating my time spent and products created I decided my time would be better spent in blender creating 3d models. Creating these models taught me new skills I can use not just in this project but in the future too. Including how to create animations in blender.

The wall above was one of my first things made and it did not suit the design language i was trying to display. So i decided to create all of my next projects using the same techniques to create a set design language.

The design language

I wanted to display a child friendly design language that was easy to read. To do this i used blocky shapes and colours when building base pieces. The reason I say base pieces is because the player’s base should be distinguishable from the in game assets.

After implementing my design language these are some of the things i created.

You can tell with the bevelled edges that they are from the same in game world and are easy on the eyes.

are you trying to get me in trouble skfjksf when renders first started getting popular, i ended up being shit-talked on simsecret for saying they creep me out lmao 😭 but i actually have a lot of thoughts on renders & the community as a whole. i've warmed up to them, especially as everyone has gotten so skilled and is making them look natural. i don't want to undermine the creativity, time, and effort that goes into renders, because although i've never done one myself, i've spent plenty of time in blender and i know how time-consuming it can be. i think it's awesome that ts4 has been out for so many years and we as a community are still finding new ways to put our unique creativity into the game (or out of it, in this case). now, that being said... i'll always enjoy story content more than renders/edits. when i joined simblr, almost everyone had some type of story going on, whether it was just gameplay fun or a fully involved plot, and that's why i felt so comfortable starting my story without any real goal. there was less pressure to write a good story because everyone else was writing one too. and now it's just way less common; sometimes i'll go an entire day without seeing a single story post on my dash :(

but here's the plot twist... i don't blame renders or edits. i think it comes down to notes & interaction alone. people reblog the HELL out of pretty edits. every time i post an edit, it gets hundreds more notes than my typical story posts, and usually gets a lot more replies – because it's easy to comment on something that's nice to look at and immediately understandable. it's not easy to comment on a story that's been going on for 3 years, has a heavy/complicated plot, and that you haven't read from the beginning (i don't blame anyone btw, it's sooo long). it's the difference between firing off a "this is so pretty!" vs. "i disagree with the way this character reacted to this situation because of xyz". and to be clear, i'm not expecting anyone to reblog my 10 - 12 picture long story posts; i accept that it's the nature of the game. but it does lead to a community that encourages bite-sized edits over long stories. again, i'm not placing more importance on one or the other – they're both hard and require skill – but i have my own bias, of course.

but wait!! there's more!! because not everyone who does renders will ever want to write a story. they may have joined simblr with the explicit intention to create renders/edits, and that doesn't mean they can be blamed for the "death" of sim stories just by doing what they enjoy doing. it's very possible that the community as a whole has just moved on from writing, and stories would have become less popular with or without renders. as heraclitus once said, "the only constant in life is change" 😔

anyways i rambled

November was good, i started substance painter work. It was a tutorial but i learned the software and i think that kinda helped a lot even tho i forgot most of it already. It made me understand the differences between the different texture maps that existed and how you can paint onto each for different material effects.

December was 5.4 release, i didn't do anything. January was Savage tier raidng, i didn't do anything. February i continued raiding and i didn't do anything outside of some art jobs for which i got paid handsomely.

March i spent coping with the year long pandemic and the approaching end of my student status. I start panicking over my weak portfolio and that i need a job to sustain myself. i reflected how March 20 was rough due to my bachelor application and I basically lost the entire 2020 on bachelor panic and i came out with very very amateur work in the end. March April 21 is where i started to slowly pick myself up. I started to think what projects i could do, what i needed, but i didn't do my market research as i should've, and i lowkey wish someone would've just smacked my head and put more pressure on me to just get properly started but alas. In April i started building a Maya animation rig for my character. It went semi successful as the character mesh was broken up at many parts which messed up the skinning massively, but the rig itself is functioning and with okay-ish IK handles, facial rig and tail and ear rigs. I could not animate it in the end due to the skinning issues.

My priorities right now is a well-payed solid job position for at least a year or so to build my social identity as atm i am nobody in this society system.

I gave up on becoming a 3D animator at the start of May.

Throughout May played xiv again and enjoyed fanfest a lot. After fanfest i started raiding e12s daily, the hardest fight at the game at that time. I founded a beautiful raid group in the 2-3 weeks we raided together. June i had trouble with my family, i didn't do anything outside of raiding. I started checking the market possibilities more properly but i could not make the connection in my brain between the market and my skillsets. Jobstress continued on therefore. End of June i went on vacation for a week.

July I came back from vacation and immediately started to check my job possibilities. I started writing down what skills i was lacking for job positions with my titles, i started digging out documentations and tutorials on substance designer and blender as a result. I learned the ways of Substance Designer up to a solid intermediate level. I learned the interface and ways of rendering with Blender, up to a simple intermediate level. I found a mass of Material Art resources and source files that i am still digging through step by step every other day.

I was sure I could make it as a Material Artist or 3D Generalist like this, given that my bachelor project was focusing entirely around shader/material creation for artists to use, but it is hard to find junior positions in that area, and my general 3D skills are very limited around Shader/Material Creation and Level Design with a serious lack of fully self-created 3D environments without majorly relying on other 3D model assets.

I was invited to work at 2 other projects during July. One is a project with friends, the other is a realistic UE game project with old industry people that i used to meet when i still worked. I have started another project with a friend to create Unity assets for the asset store in order to get more environment pieces for both our portfolios done. I feel positive about the Unity assets, but insecure about the UE project as my experiences with realistic textures and models is scarce and very much amateur work. However the people in the UE project are industry veterans, and I learn a lot about optimization from them which prompts me to stay. They were also very understanding of my limited time situation which helped massively.

For now I very clearly want to be a technical person in the pipeline, so i figured that stopping my substance projects for now to refocus on UE VFX and blueprint scripting will definitely be a very good skillset to have on my folio

in the end i just wrote this to reflect on the past months that i've lived thru after my horrific graduation. I'm still upset there was no graduation ceremony, no handshaking,no congratulating. I got my thanks from my both professors over zoom and never saw them again, so the transition from student to graduate was very blurry and confusing. I have also spent a lot of time recovering from my stress injury that i've received throughout the past year, which is probably why i've spent so many months just gaming and resting big time. I was not in a state of health to continue on with work these past months, even though i wish i had just never suffered through this type of burnout so i could've entered graduate programs of different studios in time, but alas. It's still very hard for me to keep a routine up, but at least i know my boundaries a bit better now and I try to handle my limit while not disappointing with the volume of work i present as well.

I'm proud of myself for finishing my academic degree even though the skillsets that i truly needed to get a job have only been acquired through the past month or so. I'll try become a tech artist for now and get really good at UE's blueprint and VFX pipeline in order to advance further into this career.

Review: Persona 4 Golden

On July 10th in 2008 North American audiences came in contact with Persona 4 on the PlayStation 2. After the success of Persona 3 it sold an easy 193,000 copies in its first week. This game is undoubtedly up with Final Fantasy X and Dragon Quest VIII as one of the best RPG’s on the PlayStation 2. Then on June 14th of 2012 on the PS Vita, Atlus releases Persona 4 Golden, a definitive version of Persona 4 that boasts two new social links, new difficulty levels, new music, improved voice acting, new cutscenes, more persona, new events and areas, motor scooters, the SOS Vox Populi system, trophy support, improved skill inheritance, and a new epilogue and ending. So if you were to play this game then obviously you would play this one. The disadvantage being that you probably don’t own a PS Vita and buying the system and the game will run you about $360 USD new and $160 USD used. The following is why this game is easily worth paying either of these costs.

Like A Dream Come True

Persona 4 is set in the rural town of Inaba located in the Japanese countryside. As the anime protagonist you play as a city boy staying with his detective uncle and kid cousin in this town while attending school, keeping up a social life, and solving a supernatural serial murder case. Inaba is not large, it is maybe 5 or 6 segmented open world areas that open at various times of the day. But each area is lit up with Shoji Meguro’s soundtrack, an epic rock and J-Pop composition, and is populated with familiar faces and beautiful 3D backdrops that bring the small town alive. The ambient air of Inaba bleeds its small town aesthetic and creates a believable home for you for the one in-game year that you are visiting. From every time you hear small town gossip and drama to having to avoid people that you know or make plans with unexpected acquaintances you are always engaged in the town and its inhabitants. The upbeat music and gorgeous anime visuals blend to make a 2008 small video game town feel more alive and natural than most 2019 open world action epics.

I’ll Face Myself

The Persona 4 formula creates a fool proof way to make sure that the player gets emotionally connected to each and every character with enough development to keep you coming back to play the game way more than once. The main story allows you to peer into the teens brains and see vivid and sometimes even frightening representations of their inner struggles. It takes incredibly personal topics like gender identity, society imposed masculinity, female objectivity, and narcissism and lets you cut through it with a huge katana and then validates the feelings. The life that is breathed through each of persona 4′s characters is overwhelming at times and you are always completely engaged in the story because of it. This isn’t just true of the main cast but also of every side character. Throughout your year you’ll meet a gritty detective hell bent on solving a hit and run that killed his wife, a basketball player afraid of losing his family, a rich and pretty girl who uses an ugly personality to mask her fears, and a flirtatious nurse whose loneliness and depression broke her passion. This isn’t even half of them and they are all incredibly gripping stories to attach yourself to. If Persona 4 had one big selling point it would be the individual character development, where the main story stops and starts again at the end of every month the individual characters stories constantly keep you coming back for more. The Persona series is known for its relatable and likeable characters but I fully believe that Persona 4 does this the best. In Persona 3 you see a more niche theme that is more geared toward loss and Persona 5 is very youth centered with a very strong cast, but Persona 4 has the widest range of its cast and the strongest appeal that I doubt we’ll see from the series again. The golden version of Persona 4 adds 2 new characters, original character Marie and fan favorite character Tohru Adachi which are both excellent and add a lot of value to an already stellar crew of characters.

Reach Out To The Truth

The combat in this game is a celebration of the genre, a mash-up of what makes Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest special. The persona system allows for a full range of customization for the main protagonist. Being able to on the fly change your elemental affinity and move set is a game changer and adds a certain amount of forgiveness for lack of preparation necessary in a game where you might not have another day to go back and change things around. The shadows are all designed in very interesting kind of circus horror type of ways and each is easily identifiable by its visual representation. The dungeons designs become kind of bland after 5-8 floors but thankfully none of them overstay their welcome long enough to be something to make you want a break from the game. The combat follows normal RPG conventions, normal attacks, elemental spells and a few weird ones thrown in there, buffs and heals, its all pretty standard. The set up for combat when all the characters are either surrounding the enemy or are being surrounded doesn’t give you a particular advantage but looks so much better than if they had lined them up for battle like other RPG’s or even against Persona 5 which did away with this feature in favor of the battle line up. This game is before the days of experience sharing so you will have to take multiple trips into dungeons with each of the party members to level them which is something that has kind of been done away with in the past few years and if you are against a grindier experience you could always set the difficulty to the lowest setting (only available in Golden) (This is also how I played my first run of the game) and there is no shame in playing a game on very easy. The addition of new persona in the golden version of Persona 4 will probably go relatively unnoticed by most players just because there are so many in the game already and it doesn’t really give a huge incentive to “catching them all” like a certain other game. You are also not allowed to keep personas past a certain point, you have to fuse or dispose of them in order to catch more so there is no real “getting attached” to them as they come and go so if you were looking for the very popular catch and train method this is not it, you use the persona then throw it in a blender on high till you get something better. And I believe that this approach puts a bigger spotlight on the characters instead of random deities and creatures that don’t add anything to the immediate experience, just the overall mythos and lore of persona which is probably another post in itself. And the characters are where the combat shines, voice lines that don’t become over bearing and cute idle animations with well voiced attack lines give combat a nice touch of personality that feeds into the aesthetic of the rest of the game with its emphasis on its cast.

Verdict

Persona 4 is good by itself but Persona 4 Golden is definitely the way you want to experience this game, I would not even know half of my options for each day without the SOS Vox Populi system. The new events, areas, and characters are just extras but I’m telling you that you SHOULD feel like you are missing out without these. And the new epilogue added is emotional if you’ve never cried after finishing something then you will here. We talk about video games and movies being an escape from real life for some people and Persona 4 not only does that but gives you a home and a life in Inaba that is brief but intimate and rewarding. The 70-90 hours you spend in this game are extremely memorable and unique, if you have the means to play this masterpiece then you are wasting time reading this review when you could be playing Persona 4.

paloma was born to cristian and alina vidal ( respectively a producer for film and television , and a retired actress turned director ) in los angeles in september 1999 , and grew up in the GLITZ of hollywood from a young age. though many would think a life of premieres , backstage passes and paparazzi would go straight to a little girl’s head , paloma’s parents both made sure her life was kept as normal as possible. she was raised in l.a. , and spent most of her time either in school , or by the water.

despite her parents’ backgrounds and careers , it was never really written in the stars for paloma to follow in their footsteps. growing up , she was a particularly active and outdoorsy child , with a penchant for sailing , surfing ( see her HEADCANONS below for more on her surfing ! ) and photography. guidance counselors thought she might choose to become a pro athlete of some kind , or perhaps some kind of sports journalist or photo-reporter.

throughout high school , she felt a certain lack of direction , feeling torn between her childhood interests and the pull of hollywood , and what she’d seen her parents do their whole lives. in her junior year of high school , the opportunity to audition for the role of audrey in her school’s rendition of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS came up. landing the role , and the subsequent weeks of rehearsals and performances , cemented the idea of a career in the arts for paloma.

she eventually made a move towards the industry by attending the savannah college of art and design ( scad ) , as a performing arts major. the opportunity to audition for the role of VALENTINA , in netflix’s upcoming show the village was brought up by one of her professors ( along with her parents’ connections ) , who urged her to travel to new york. within a few weeks , filled with travel and a flurry of online assignments , paloma landed the role and decided to move to new york full-time to be present for the filming of the show.

VALENTINA ROMERO , known as val to friends , is the village’s resident pretty girl ( with a brain ). she’s what would result if serena van der woodsen , cher horowitz , cordelia chase , elle woods and summer roberts were put into a blender. from a prominent political family , she was raised between party fundraisers , easter egg hunts on the white house lawn , campaign trails and society gatherings.

much like SERENA , her life has happened under the warm glow of the spotlight , and things always seem to have come easy to her. she’s a little more tame than serena though , and rarely ends up on page six ( when she does end up in the pages of magazines , it’s usually for something a little more decent ).

much like CHER , she’s known for her fashion , and is the darling of amateur photographers in greenwich village. she’s not really the type to bring anyone down for their taste , but rather one to remark when someone wears something she’s into.

much like CORDELIA , she’s not one to bite her tongue when something’s on her mind. she’s got a sharp wit , and adores honesty over everything else. again , she’s not known to bring people down for sport , but will rebut anything that comes her way if it’s meant to be damaging to her , her family or her friends.

she took up surfing at a young age , and made it her primarily source of exercise growing up. for a while , many thought she’d either go pro , or end up photographing surfers professionally. since moving to new york , she’s had to CHANGE workout regimes , but that hasn’t stopped her from decorating her apartment with surf memorabilia.

she loves experimenting with fashion , and is known for her BOLD red carpet looks. from bright colors to unusual materials , nothing is off limits ( as long as it’s ethical ! ) she chose her stylist specifically because both saw eye to eye when it came to taking a risk , rather than playing it safe.

her favorite scents are coconut sunblock and surf wax , which she found is CANDLE form and is always burning in her apartment when she’s running through lines , practicing her blocking , or hanging out with castmates / friends. it’s also one of her favorite ‘ first day of shooting ’ gifts for the cast and crew around her.

dried mango is her ABSOLUTE favorite snack , and she’s always carrying some around on-set. her mother used to give her that and frozen grapes growing up instead of candy ( since she has such a sweet tooth ) , and she’s been hooked ever since.

she’s not one to name-drop her parents’ connections and friends in the industry , but the one connection she’ll proudly let people know about ( when they ask ) is that , yes , hugh jackman is her godfather. he and her father met when the latter produced x-men in 2000 and have been INSEPARABLE ever since. if paloma’s ever able to fake a believable aussie accent , it’s thanks to hugh.

her script pages are usually covered in notes , made in pencil , highlighter , markers , or whatever else she can get her hands on. over the past few months , and during her time at scad , she found that jotting down her IMMEDIATE thoughts on a scene , her lines and / or her blocking always help her remember things better. she keeps all of her notes and script pages in binders back at her apartment , so she can always look back on her character arc and make sure she stays true to who valentina is.

𝐯. 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

give me the WILL THEY , WON’T THEY ? , where the paparazzi and magazine editors are all convinced there’s a relationship bubbling below the surface. and who wouldn’t ? paloma and your muse have incredible on-set chemistry , are always seen hanging out outside of work hours , and are expertly paired by their publicists during press rounds. that said , when removed from the flashes of the paparazzi , nothing seems to have transpired ( yet ).

give me a RYAN REYNOLDS TO MY JAKE GYLLENHAAL ( see this video ) , where our muses cannot be paired together for interviews anymore , after cracking jokes every five seconds instead of promoting the village. they’re fused at the hip on-set , and are usually the ones to go live on instagram during filming breaks , to the delight of fans.

give me the PLATONIC LIFE PARTNER , whom paloma loves more than her own self. they have the login information to all her devices , they text people back in her stead , they sleep in the same bed , they readjust each other’s clothing on red carpets. one is rarely seen without the other , and the village’s fans revel in the two’s friendship.

qb top 2019 anime list

this year what I took notice of the most were uncompromisingly ambitious series that care very little for the opinions of haters. I couldn’t come up with an order for them, so pick your own on your scorecards at home. - qb

Hulaing Babies

Five minute anime about a Hula club that nobody watched except me, blurry kaleidoscopic fountain of pastels and homestarrunner-esque morphing at bizarre angles and judiciously excessive mouth flapping, outrageously blunt visual metaphors for emotions and a finale where everyone floats into the sky with no logical justification needed or wanted.

I learned absolutely nothing about hula or okinawa or dancing but I loved every second.

GRANBELM (while it was airing)

Ultimately forgettable, but a fun cross-genre experiment that was very enjoyable to unpack week by week, takes a blender to normally very structured genres for better and worse. It’s obviously obsessed with both mecha and magical girl and sincerely rams the gundam and the madoka tropes together until it appears they are kissing and one of the arms has flown off. In retrospect, it was completely impossible to predict because it seemed to rewrite its lore every week and may have been making it up as it went along. I had a completely different idea of where the show was going nearly every week, so that was pretty exciting for me. I still can’t believe that the main character was actually a magical girl tulpa who had an arc where she dealt with the existential problem of not being real. All of these questionable ingredients were surprisingly hella fun to watch while GRANBELM was airing, and reacting to this bizarre roller coaster week by week through all its twists and turns was probably my favorite discrete experience this year, even though the show itself probably doesn’t hold up. But that’s okay too, it’s alright to forget things sometimes.

I just wish I could remember the name of this girl with the pink hair and the dumb face from all my screenshots? I could have sworn she was important.

KoP:SSS / Pri⭐Chan S2

Pretty rhythm has had a really excellent year and its dumb to lump these together but I’ll do it anyway. You can’t stop me from putting this on here

Pretty Rhythm had an amazing year with the first English license in its history, Pri⭐Chan threw off the yoke of the last season’s tendency to play it safe and got immediately weird as balls. Nijinosaki Daia is a brilliant character and is essentially Jem but good.

The franchise has always blatantly reused remixed components like plot themes, entire characters, and full cg sequences, and Pri⭐Chan has lightest version of this, by simply copy and pasting characters from other series and having them exist with a barely different last name and an identical design and voice actress.

However, King of Prism: Shiny Seven Stars is the ultimate, nauseatingly over the top version, imagining a disembodied council of identifiable veteran voice actors that control the idols, and by extension the pretty rhythm universe, inadvisably connecting every franchise (and some shows that aren’t even in the franchise) in a veritable corkboard of meta-cosmic nonsense that made even dedicated fans throw up their hands and go along for the ride.

Fruits Basket (2019)

The Fruits Basket 2019 reboot was a solid and consistent fixture of my year, as a diehard fan of the manga it’s simultaneously the uncompromised vision of the author and the transformative modern take I didn't know I wanted. I don’t have a lot else to say about it, Fruits Basket is one of the best shoujo ever written if not the best one, and this is a best case scenario for an adaptation. Highly recommend watching this if you’re an old fan since middle school or even if you’ve never seen it before. Kemurikusa

lol they called an anime smokeleaf

In the wake of Kemono Friends 2 being a shallow cash grab from a company that decided slaughtering their golden goose and burning the corpse was a good idea, Kemurikusa is that goose rising from the ashes like the powerful phoenix to create another awkward but weirdly competent CG anime that’s oddly endearing despite resembling nothing else in the current anime industry. It writes a lot of lore checks in the first 10 episodes and actually nails the ending without overexplaining or getting lost in the weeds of its sometimes convoluted lore. Honorable mention to: Kappa

This was a great year for cryptids, especially Kappa, between Cure Cryptid-hunter hikaru hoshina repping all UMA’s, Kappard reclaiming his less handsome brother Pissard’s naming scheme and becoming the fan favorite bad guy of Star Twinkle Precure, and Everything in Sarazanmai, 2019 was the year that brought Kappa back, unless you would argue that they never left. It’s hard to tell with yokai. Also Mob Psycho 100 s2 was the most technically impressive anime i’ve ever seen in my life but I felt it was more important to honor this caboose.

lindsay ellis is great and all but she thinks anti-got folk are either book pedants or hipsters. she recognizes some of got's flaws but her pov seems to be that deliberating excluding yourself from possibly the largest collective fandom event ever is stupid; these are exciting times. most of that is agreeable but it's stuff like this that I'm sure reminds you guys it's not nice being in the minority and in earlier days made you think if you're being biased or blowing things out of proportion.

so you guys have been pretty brave is what i want to say. sure, the hype around got is really exciting, but if only the show maintained the standard of its first season, it wouldn’t feel so hollow. and btw, if anyone had any doubt if your sizing up of got’s writing room was correct, it surely was blown away within the first 5 minutes. immediate on the nose season 1 reference with random kid running around winterfell and arya smirking like “now we’re here” oof this is such a spoof

also, you’d imagine the first spoken words in the opener for their widely anticipated final season would be a result of a considerable amount of thinking. and what did they come up with? eunuch joke. imagine thinking tyrion’s “i have balls B)” punchline is fucking hilarious and then writing a set up for it. it was so obviously worked backward. like this is what they thought people who have watch parties in pubs should be cheering for going “haha omg this show is back”

Yeah, I saw her tweeting a bit of that. It’s definitely disappointing because I do love so many of her videos, and find them very well-researched and pretty sound in her approach to dissecting where something erred, or what its core message is. But then I also feel like she has these hot-takes about every six months that I very much disagree with (like her weird James Gunn shaped hill she picked to die on). I feel like her point here was that people should be allowed to consume problematic media even for ~lesser reasons~ like “aesthetic pleasure” which…sure, so long as you engage with flaws and listen to the voices hurt by programming. But no doubt it was dismissive.

Also the very serious structural problems of the show, misaligned character motivations to the plot, inconsistent characterization, full on retcons, and ultimate audience take-aways you would think would be a bit accessible to the person who tore apart Disney’s Hercules on the same basis, ya know?

My own disappointment aside though, I definitely don’t think what we do is brave. Like wow, I feel very unworthy of that praise. I just sort of accept that there’s a bit of cognitive dissonance people have when it comes to GoT (often the result of book projections, which I was totally guilty of until 4x09), and I’ve gotten good at ignoring the inevitable hype oozing out of every corner of social media, even from people who don’t normally talk about tv shows and movies.

And I definitely still question myself if I’m blowing things out of proportion, lol. But sometimes the show is just the show! Like your example from the opening line…holy crap. What do people see in this?!

Frankly the dialogue yesterday about Sansa/Dany was one of those situations where I had to check myself. Because sometimes I think that “oh this is probably sexism” (in terms of anyone having issue with Sansa’s tone/words) is so like…basic and kind of dumb, that you wouldn’t think it’d even need to be expressed. But then when I saw people still struggling with what I was trying to argue (I wasn’t conveying it the clearest), I came to that “give her lines and tone to Tyrion” exercise. This is a super super weird show to talk about on the internet.

Finally, I try to avoid the term “gaslighting” with media, since I experienced gaslighting growing up, and “retconning” usually serves the same purpose. BUT. This show actively creates new motivations from season-to-season for characters, and tries to create rationalizations that make people forget how we got to where we were.

D&D talk in their interview about how Dany is doing this really nice thing for the North and is frustrated with the tepid reception, but that’s 100% NOT where we left Dany last year. She was honored at being given the North, and hoped she was worthy of Jon’s confidence in her, clearly thinking about winning everyone over. Not to mention Jon didn’t kneel “for the North” since Dany had ALREADY agreed to fight at that point. He kneeled because he believed his Lords would ‘come to see her for what she was.’

Now that’s all been put into a blender so we get fed cool sentiments like “how can you care about titles now?!” and we can nod and think about how small-minded everyone is being, but no…the actions to which people are taking issue were never particularly justified, and if titles don’t matter, then why was it necessary to kneel at all?

Sorry, this answer was all over the place. The show is…not good, and in a way that makes me need to pull receipts on their own damn writing from just two episodes prior. Yeah, it might be enjoyable aesthetically, but calling critics “hipsters” (even jokingly) just doesn’t feel particularly reasonable.

Team Titans #20

Is it sexist to point out cameltoe?

It's been about two weeks since I read a Team Titans comic book so I can't remember what was happening, which is probably a good thing. It's nice to see that my brain apparently has some kind of organic Roomba that cleans up after I've soiled my mind with terrible media choices. Revamping my old Patreon page has kept me away from re-reading terrible old comic books. If you enjoy my take on comic books perhaps you'll enjoy my take on The Bible? But if you want me to review a particular song, you'll have to give me money. I don't give my wisdom away for free! I mean, I do! But only in certain circumstances. I think what was happening in this comic book was a right-wing corporate and media conglomerate asshole (much like Rupert Murdoch) was preparing to time travel into the future where he could take the place of Lord Chaos and rule the world. It's the kind of plan only an idiotic super villain in a comic book could come up with. Any real life super villain would think, "I have so much money and power right now in a world I recognize, why should I risk everything by traveling into an unknown future where my biggest enemies await? Better to just buy a private island in the present and look at porn all day." But for some reason, comic book super villains are never satisfied. They never think, "I could retire with the amount of money it's going to cost me to create this death satellite!" The always think, "Man, having lots of money really kills your ambition. Maybe I should use it to endanger my freedom and possibly my life?" Idiots!

Based on these silhouettes, one of Lord Murdoch's henchman is just a gigantic sentient penis.

The Team Titans leader for the future narrates the big battle so maybe we'll soon find out who the mysterious leader really is! I think I've been guessing Terry Long throughout most of this re-read because who else could it be? Unless Terry's kid has one of those comic book experiences that ages him quickly, he probably won't be leading the team as a nine year old. Although I can't think why I'm ruling that out when I easily accepted Nightwing once driving a motorcycle straight up a skyscraper and Starfire falling in love with Wolfman-written Nightwing. A few pages into the battle, a bunch of Team Titans members (not from the titular and most important team!) begin to die. First killed is Gunsmoke. You might not remember Gunsmoke because Gunsmoke was a terrible name and Gunsmoke never did anything except help provide some context on the plot. We learned from Gunsmoke that the Team Titans were spread out all across history because the Team Titans leader created a truly inept time machine. Gunsmoke's last words (aside from "Arrrggghhhhh!") are "Great. Don't tell me y'all saved my butt in the Old West just so I can get it kicked in 1994." I guess in 1994, creating a character that's simply a guy dressed like a cowboy didn't cut the editor's mustard. The second character to die is Monsieur Poniard of Judge and Jury. He should thank his terrible name for cutting his comic book career short. "Mister Dagger," even in French, just isn't going to inspire the kind of terror that a super villain should inspire. And, yes, I'm aware of how many terribly mundane and crappy names exist within the DC Universe! I'm just saying, "One less is a good start." The third Team Titan to die is a nameless Titan in the background of Monsieur Poniard's death. She (or he) has orange hair and wears a purple costume so I think we can all agree why he (or she) had to die. You know, because Starfire already had claims on that terrible color combination. After Lazarium (Lord Murdoch's super villain name) takes down the main Team Titans in one blast, he jokes, "I love the smell of ozone in the morning." I know that's supposed to be a joke because he says, "Heh heh," immediately after. Earlier, Blue (unless it was Green or Purple or Yellow. Remember, the colorist of this current story arc is an idiot) quipped, "Yeah, and monkeys might fly outta my -- OOOOF!" So we have all the evidence we need that Jeff Jensen's main writing crutch is movie and television quotes. The fourth Team Titans to die is Two Gallon Hat.

I often come up with characters for my stories that I know are stupid but I insert them into it anyway simply so that other characters can call them stupid.

While all of the other Titans from throughout history are being slaughtered by Lazarium's henchmen (where did he get henchmen who put such effort into henchmanning?! I bet he pays a living wage, offers great health care choices, and provides a hefty pension), Mirage remains stuck in traffic on the streets below.

If only Mirage could easily do something to keep from being recognized!

I don't know what she did with Deathwing but I hope it involved a hedge clipper and a blender. Mirage steps out of the cab to find Cokie Walters staring at the corpse of Two Gallon Hat. Cokie apologizes for some reason which leads to Mirage threatening Cokie if she doesn't help Mirage save the Titans. Now how the hell is a bubble gum gossip reporter supposed to help with that?! "Mister Lazarium! Mister Lazarium! Is it true you pee through the gate instead of over the fence?!" Realizing that the Titans have met their match, Terra resorts to pleading her case: "Lazarium! No! Please — you can't just kill us like this!" Lazarium, who is a super villain who has really thought out his plan and understands the power of a truly great one-liner, replies smartly: "Oh, yes, I can, Terra — especially you!" I just got goosebumps reading that! Although after the Wayne's World and Apocalypse Now lines from earlier, maybe Jensen stole this retort from a movie too. Wasn't this the great line from the end of Die Hard 2: Dying Ain't My Thing when Bruce Willis sets the airplane fuel alight? Five hundred and thirty Titans got there asses handed to them by Lazarium and his goons. But not to worry because Prester Jon, Redwing, Battalion, Donna Troy, and just-out-of-a-coma Nightrider have arrived to save the day! And don't think they're going to do it silently! Battalion has a new battle cry that I can't believe didn't catch on with the youth of 1994.

How was this not one of the best selling DC posters of 1994?

Battalion goes down in one shot. Most of the characters will probably go down in one shot because Killowat will probably need to prove himself. Will saving the world from Lazarium be enough to make Mirage forget he's a racist jerk? Hopefully not! The first person to nearly put Lazarium down is called Liquid Joe. Being that he's called Liquid Joe, you know he's not going to wind up being the hero. His blast of slime doesn't even faze Lazarium. Time for Cokie and Mirage to save Killowat so Killowat can save the day! Cokie knows where Killowat has been restrained because she's a tabloid journalist. This was the era where we all believed Geraldo was going to discover the secret of the universe. Now we know Geraldo's only goal was to uplift Geraldo. That fucker will say anything for praise and a paycheck. I suppose you can say that about anybody who appears on Fox News though. After losing dozens of Titans, I have to admit that my plan would be to give Lazarium the time travel device so we could be rid of him. If he time travels into the future, he's not our problem anymore! Heck, he probably won't ever be our problem! The future no longer contains Lord Chaos so who knows what he's going to find in 2001. If in 1994 I were told that 2001 would be the beginning of some truly inspiring xenophobic bullshit masquerading as patriotism, I would have been all, "Yeah, I can buy that." Maybe that wasn't a good example. Killowat defeats all of Lazarium's henchmen with one push of a button. Then he goes after Lazarium. Lazarium believes he'll win for the same reason all bad guys (and Deathstork (who is a bad guy but sometimes people begin to think maybe he's a good guy who was never actually convicted of statutory rape so is it really rape? (Yes. The answer is yes. I'm answering on behalf of a large percentage of male Americans who would get the answer to this question wrong))) believe they'll win.

Technically it's not rape if you say, "Here! Take it!" I'm just judging by American legal standards which have an even lower bar than that to declare something isn't rape.

Killowat gives Lazarium a bunch of his power which causes Lazarium to overload and explode into a smoking scorch mark on the roof. But we can't believe Killowat has just killed somebody (even though his name depends on the idea that he kills) so he makes sure to think, "The overload couldn't have killed him. His corporeal form must be around here somewhere." Well, wherever Lazarium went, it's clear that this story is winding down, so he's technically defeated. But he would have been back if this comic book hadn't been cancelled in a few more issues! Oh wait! He's back a few pages later so Nightrider can feast on his blood. Now nobody has to worry about Lazarium anymore and nobody cares if Dagon murdered him because what's a vampire supposed to do? Not eat people?! Anyway, the time machine simply opens a black hole in the sky which consumes hundreds of the poorly named Team Titans. Preser Jon shuts it down and now the Titans have to deal with being part of 1994 forever. I mean, at least until the end of the year when they'll have to deal with being a part of 1995 forever. Or for a year, anyway. The final page of this issue reveals the leader and it's definitely not the leader anybody working on this comic book had planned it to be. Instead, it's Monarch because — guess what, motherfuckers?! — it's Zero Hour time! Team Titans #20 Rating: A-. I'm only giving it a high grade because this issue was the start of Zero Hour. Not that Zero Hour isn't a completely flawed premise that was just another gimmick to allow DC's editors to fix shit that the fangenders kept haranguing them on. But it is interesting that this terrible little Titans off-shoot comic book is where DC decided to begin the entire Zero Hour premise. My other favorite part of this is how we find out that Monarch is the Leader. My supposition is that Zero Hour was thought up long after The Leader was already a mysterious presence in this book. I'm sure the writers and editors of this book had an idea about who The Leader should be. Maybe it was Dick Grayson, or Terry Long, or Starfire, or a reintegrated Danny Chase. But it certainly wasn't Monarch which meant they changed the goal line as the story proceeded. Which is a microcosm of what happens during the Zero Hour event! It was obvious throughout much of Zero Hour that Captain Atom was going to wind up being Monarch. But since so many fans had guessed it and expected it, DC decided that instead of continuing with a plot and character arc that made sense, they would simply reveal that Monarch was Hawk. Sure, it was a surprise! But it didn't make any fucking sense. Fucking comic books!
