Probably pretty obvious by this point...

I actually flip between Kogoro and Ginzo depending on the day, but in general I think Kogoro's my favorite. He gets a lot more screentime and focus, which means he gets fleshed out a lot more. Sometimes I get on kicks where I really love Ginzo, but I think that's because he's a type of character I like and he has enough weird little quirks for me to latch onto and make headcanons around. There's so much more there with Kogoro.

He's just such a mess, I love him. Not a good person but veeeeery gradually getting better. Kogoro and Conan's relationship is one of my favorites to see on screen, I love how the recent episodes (900+) spotlight them more, show them getting food and working on cases together. He's an idiot surrounded by geniuses, and I can't help but root for the rare times the shows/movies take him seriously. No matter how many times he embarrasses himself.

This is really an underrated moment IMO. Up to this point, Shanks and his crew have been characterized as friendly, easygoing people who pose no threat whatsoever to the residents of the village that they've docked in. This scene establishes that these friendly, easygoing people are also dangerous, powerful criminals and pirates who are perfectly willing to use underhanded means to defeat those with whom they have a quarrel. This is the basic foundation the entire series is then built on.

Sadly, Hinton Battle passed away on January 29, so I'd like to take a moment to appreciate his iconic performance as 'Sweet' in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 'Once More, With Feeling'.

Sweet is easily one of the best villains in the entire Buffyverse. And imo he ties with The Gentlemen and Dracula as the best one-episode-only Buffy villain. What makes Sweet so great is that he perfectly exemplified how good Buffy was at taking a concept that sounds absolutely ridiculous and making it work. A demon who curses the people of Sunnydale to randomly break out into song and dance. Sounds pretty stupid, right? Well yes, until those people start literally dancing themselves to death. And through those songs, the main characters expose their deepest feelings and flaws. So, starts off goofy and fun, and then it gets serious and pretty heartbreaking. And while the Scooby Gang "beat the bad guy", they've still got to deal with all that's come out in this episode. "All those secrets you've been concealing/Say you're happy now - once more, with feeling".

Anyway, back to Hinton's performance. 'What You Feel' and its reprise are criminally underrated villain songs. So smooth, so fun, and very wicked. And Hinton's vocal performance was just perfect. As well as his dancing! He played the role of Sweet to perfection. Just the right amount of theatrical camp with a dash of quiet menace. And he was such a joy to watch in this show.

So, rest in peace, Hinton Battle. Thank you for gifting us with this truly iconic performance.

by the way this is not gonna do the subject NEARLY enough justice BUT i do really wish there was more keeley appreciation in the main tags... like not only is she an Extremely explicit parallel for ted, but she's also at the heart of SO much of the show's themes - and you'd never know it from reading most of the meta that goes around!

okay, so like, in no particular order, here some of the criminally underrated + under-explored things we know abt keeley jones:

she has an almost identical social strategy to ted: being earnestly, and oftentimes defiantly herself, regardless of what assumptions it pushes other people to make abt her (i.e.: her description in the pilot, 'used to having her book judged by its cover'). and then, in spite of the ppl around her belittling her/writing her off, she STILL approaches them w genuine intent to connect + get to know them.

i think it was an EXTREMELY deliberate choice in episode 3 for both keeley and ted to give rebecca 'a compliment she's never heard before'. they're not merely skating by on small talk or doing the bare minimum to show their appreciation for killing the photo (which rebecca would be prepared for), they're subverting her expectations by going for genuine (if bemusing) compliments.

then ofc w keeley's s3 arc, you can see how she's trying (and slowly succeeding, judging by that nervous worker guy's attempts to start joking around with her) to get her PR firm's culture to the same, easy-going, more-friends-than-coworkers vibe of richmond. she even specifically asks ted for advice (and, again, i think its relevant that the advice he gives refers to his most effective team building moment - the ghost banishing ceremony). it's very important to her that ppl feel comfortable in her presence, and we can see her getting genuinely distressed whenever she struggles with this.

she says EXPLICITLY in that one exchange w sassy + rebecca that she freaks out whenever she thinks she's being abandoned - she delivers it like a joke, but she's visibly off-kilter and nervous while she says it, apparently still coming down from the anxiety of thinking she'd been ditched. and again, after the gala when she goes to (presmably) get back together with jamie, she says outright that she really struggles to ever break up with people - even people she's no longer interested in, like jamie! - because she second guesses her own judgement so much. on an adjacent note, imo the melt down she has when roy was crowding her was only as abrupt + extreme as it was because she had been repressing her feelings about it for so long. which is SO interesting in the context of her being one of the most upfront and outspoken characters in the show!!!! like. she literally contains multitudes!

and, also, while i do think there's some genuine critical analysis to be done abt the normalisation of what is, essentially, sexual harassment at richmond (it's... extremely uncomfortable to go on such a long tangent about how attractive a stranger's boobs are, even if ur also a woman), i think keeley's active flirtation + general horny-on-main behaviour is ALSO extremely under-explored. bc, in the context of her being a WAG, and also a model, keeley recieves completely unprompted + unwarranted comments abt her body all day every day. when sassy told her that her ex-husband used to masturbate to her photos, she's hardly shell shocked. it's pretty clear that that's something she's used to being known for, and being told about in gratuitous detail. in this context, you can really see how the way she leans in to flirtation, and talking about sex and the hotness of various ppl around her (ie: her entrance in the pilot, making a show + joke out of how she must Obviously want to see all of the footballers naked), is her way of pushing back against the way others don't respect HER boundaries. ie: 'if my body's fair game for everyone to talk about + sexualise, so is theirs!'. it's an extremely interesting coping mechanism, especially in the context of it leading to her oftentimes perpetuating the cycle of harassment herself. and then there's also how the locker room culture OF richmond involves a significant amt of talking about sex, past partners, etc - since she spends so much time in that environment, you can pretty clearly see how that'd influence her decision to go with the current, rather than against.

AND OFC. HOW could i get this far w/o talking about the sheer narrative weight that's given to her relationship with rebecca!!! not only is she arguably the first character to befriend rebecca (beating ted out by several episodes, at least by my count), she is ALSO the reason that rebecca ever tells ted the truth ('it would change how i feel about you'!!!!!!! AGH!!!!), and honestly i think keeley's disappointment in her is what leads her to finally accept that. sabotaging richmond is a cruel thing to do and she doesn't want to do it anymore! like. keeley's unabashed admiration of + love for rebecca, and rebecca's eventual reciprocation is quite literally the driving force for both of their arcs ('thank you for teaching this panda how to be a lion'!!!!!) and i just!!! i care them!!!!!!!!!!!!

tldr; keeley jones is a blorbo of absolutely apocalyptic proportions PLEASE let her into ur heart the next time ur writing analysis + meta....

5. Something you see in fics a lot and love:

Liam having a gay/bisexual crisis about Theo. I don't know why I enjoy it so much, but it never gets boring and it is always very funny to me to read Mason, exasperated, trying to deal with Liam's blood pressure rocketing through the roof about possibly crushing on Theo Raeken.

8. You Hope more people will come to appreciate ___ (a ship, trope, episode, etc.):

...Ethan/Isaac. It started out as me joking and turned into a semi-random pairing I greatly enjoy. I love Dethan as well, but the enemies to lovers with Ethan and Isaac plus their shared trait of leaving the show too soon and robbing Scott of his gay lieutenants? Criminally underrated imo.

14. The ship that always makes you smile:

It's probably a common answer, but it is, in fact, still Thiam. I have no idea what it is about them that works so well, why I love them so much, why the world has to be so unfair to rob us of getting more of them in the movie, etc. Pumpkin and Theodork just have a special place in my cold, dark heart.

15. The character that always makes you smile:

When I answered this one previously I brought up Ethan, so for the sake of variety. Let's talk about Isaac this time.

I so vividly recall early S2 wondering how the hell Isaac became such a fan favourite outside of Daniel Sharman being hot, and then the taking pain scene rolled around and I was 100% on board. Not to say he wasn't the best of Derek's pack already anyway, but late S2 cemented him as an icon and then he just kept being iconic throughout S3. And another omission from the movie that I'm violently bitter about. But yes, much as I did eventually come to love Liam, I will forever miss the days of Stiles as Scott's right hand and Isaac as Scott's left. Their trio dynamic in general was just underutilized and undervalued too.

16. A tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate:

So fair warning that it's depressing, but we're back to Ethan (and also by extension Aiden). In 3A, episode 8 I believe, when Stiles and Scott pull Ethan aside to talk to him while Lydia distracts Aiden, it's established that the Steiners can, to an extent, feel each other's pain. Cora claws Aiden, and Ethan feels it, right down to the location of the wound.

So, with that in mind, Aiden's death becomes that much sadder when you realize that Ethan knew the exact moment Aiden died, because at that moment, presumably, Aiden stopped feeling pain, and by extension Ethan stopped feeling Aiden's pain and knew that Aiden was gone. That scene is already devastating but once I realized this extra layer...I can't rewatch it without crying.

Thankfully some people still see sense and called the whole thing out (saw this in a Reddit thread post-Melbourne), chalking the hype up to recency bias (rightfully so.) Admittedly he's been in the right place at the right time both times (in Singapore and Australia) but I mean... passing Max (who was already having issues with his car basically from the get go) and then just. Keeping the lead (while your teammate gets instructed point blank not to even attempt to overtake you) is hardly comparable to keeping a title challenge alive against your generational talent teammate arguably at or nearing the peak of his abilities. Also the things Nico did in 2016 were insane and I honestly haven't seen this level of commitment since. This man didn't renounce cycling, wear ankle stocks, remove stitching on his gloves and refuse to sleep in the same bed as his wife for like eight months for people to be comparing him to Carlos 😭😭😭

I could maybe see where they're coming from if Carlos went to Red Bull (since now suddenly he's their number one candidate apparently) and managed to keep up with Max over the course of a season as teammates, enough to actually realistically challenge for the WDC. But like this? Benefiting from the annual Red Bull Singapore stinker and then Max having race-ending car issues? People have clearly forgotten what actual racing for the lead looks like and it shows😑

I think he's definitely been benefiting from recency bias and also people being jaded after... let's say a season and a half of Red Bull dominance. I still think Australia was a pretty meh race in itself and it's only getting hyped because the result was a non-Max win 🤷🏻‍♀️

How he can be considered "criminally underrated" when some influential pundits/journalists have been rating him more highly than Charles for the past three years and saying he deserves to be Ferrari's lead driver is beyond me. Imo he's one of the few drivers that has consistently been getting their flowers and been vocally backed by numerous influential media figures. Even when he had very anonymous flop periods they were usually glossed over and/or quickly forgotten (early 2022 was magnanimously chalked up to "he's still getting used to the car/he can't perform at this best when his future is uncertain and more recently the back half of 2023, pretty much Japan to Abu Dhabi where he was making a lot of mistakes and generally trailing behind Charles, has been conveniently erased from collective memory now that he's the man of the moment.)

I would say "not to toot my own horn" but this game is about tooting your own horn so ill say it I wrote this one in such a way where I can literally picture it as a canon scene in my head. I reread it whenever im in a bad mood and it always cheers me up

leave your roles at the door I maintain is my most underrated fic. I love it a lot, I think Margaret and Radar's dynamic is criminally under explored both in canon and in fanfic, I do really need to write like a 10k fic about the dynamic I envision for them in my head their friendship could be sooooooo good

a welcome awakening is one I wrote for a request but I want to expand on it tbh. it as a scene works FANTASTICALLY imo I love it a lot I love the moment I captured but I love it so much I want to like, write a fully-fledged fic about the entire scenario + the aftermath. maybe when I get through a bit more of my insane WIP backlog

and miles to go before i sleep while there are parts of this fic I wouldnt mind revisiting at some point, I still love it very dearly for being my first multi-chapter work since I was a teenager. I still love my take on Hawkeye/BJ here, I really like the way I went about a getting together fic for them, so while I do at some point want to go back and do some edits, overall this fic still holds up as one of my favs

First, the fruits!

Orange 🍊 -> obvious choice, zesty and sweet, brings everyone together with its juice; a refreshing favourite

Apple 🍎 -> solid, classic, reliable ; probably an oldie throwback

Mango 🥭 -> smooth, sexy lady with a groove; perhaps slightly unexpected

Strawberry 🍓 -> tangy, slightly acidic; a bittersweet one

Grapes 🍇 -> underrated bops bursting with flavour once you give them a try; a fun one

Melon 🍈 -> my favourite fruit so my personal favourite

🍓 The Messenger - just typing the name of this song got the water fountains going. "When life leaves us blind, love keeps us kind" is a lyric that I will carry with me until the day I die

🍇 In Between - for the sake of "underrated" I purposely chose something from after the first 2 albums. In Between is criminally underrated imo, which is a shame since it's such a sweet song sung by Mike (which is rare since he hardly ever gets a solo song). Bonus underrated AND fun - When They Come For Me

🍈 Breaking The Habit - I could go on and on about why I love this song so so much, but I don't want to get sad. 13 yo me made it this far thanks to her 💙

which season is your favourite? early seasons >>>>> but more specifically i think season 4! although 3 and 5 are close too, that whole era has some of the most interesting cases and as devastating as it is i love the focus on hotch’s home life both pre and post haley’s death

who (in your opinion) is the most underrated character? i’m not mega attached to any of the characters who filled emily’s place in the seasons she was away but i did rly like kate callahan!! i’m surprised she’s not talked about more, she’s such a cool character imo and her storyline with her niece is also underrated!

who (in your opinion) is the most overrated character? this is a hard one but i think i’d have to say rossi? there’s several reasons why i dislike him a bit compared to other characters but he just felt like quite a step down from gideon and i just feel like his personality and backstory have less substance and are less interesting compared to the others’?

who’s your favourite cast member? if you could change one thing in a plot what would it be? rossi being canon racist in his youth.. but if we’re talking more major (?) plot points i think maeve’s death - everyone agrees spencer suffers by far the most trauma throughout the years and i think it would’ve been nice for maeve to have survived and for her and spencer’s relationship to have progressed further, just to add a little sprinkle of consistent joy into his life :(

why did you start watching the show? one of my school friends loved it and convinced me to watch it bc a family friend had given us her prime video log in but i only got through season 1 until i got logged out so i went two years without watching it until i subscribed to disney+ at the start of this year and picked up where i left off

I usually see people talk about the great fire of rome when it comes to horrible shit The First Doctor did but imo him causing the fall of Troy is way worse and a criminally underrated moment.

The fire of rome was pure accident, something he didn't even realized he caused until Vicki pointed out. The construction of the horse was something he did knowingly intentionally out of fear and desperation to save his own life.

The difference is made more clear because while The Doctor simply laughed at seeing the great fire of rome, you can actually see him feel guilt when it comes to the fall of troy. When Katarina calls him a god and The Doctor tries to correct her, he says "I'm not a god..." with genuine shame and sorrow, which particularly after seeing the revival hits like a truck.

Ranking my favorite 2023 K-pop comebacks

I feel like 2023 was a year where I followed kpop comebacks especially diligently bc of my newfound interest in dance, and since it's 2024 this means an entire year has passed now of This

here's a list of my 10 personal favorite title tracks this year, happy new year all!

The Top Ten

1. Monsta X - "Beautiful Liar"

listen. when I said

in january of last year I meant it with my whole ass and I stand by it an entire earth year later. this song fucks So hard

firstable Yes I'm sad this is their last cb with most of the group in a while but also jesus what a banger to go out on

I love the guitars, the looks everyone is serving, the funky little twist in the song structure after the second verse, plus thinking always about lovemelovemelovemetellmetellmetellme + the chains + kihyun with a literal goddamn whip + the gunshot sound effects punctuating joohoney's verse. chefs kiss

2. Taemin - "Guilty"

god taemin is back and you can just feel the catholicity through the screen. the haunting vocals. the delicious string textures throughout (the way the arpeggios shift to pizzicato for the second verse!). the 6/4 time (the only choreo I learned this year that was not to an 8 count). the fucking through the shirt grab. the bridge which they extended in the MV specifically to squeeze in Even More Yearning™.

this is a perfect cb and I will say the rest of the album is also flawless and my favorite out of this list. honestly this probably would have been first if not for the fact that I personally just liked beautiful liar so goddamn much. thank you taemin. no notes.

3. SHINee - "HARD"

aka the song I previously described as "2 baddies, but Good" (no really, they have same key signature & near identical song structure. listen to them side by side with HARD on .95 speed if you don't believe me)

anyway, like 2 baddies this is SM-flavored af but I love the old school hip-hop vibes in HARD soooo much. I've had some people tell me they found it weird and off-putting but to me it's effortlessly cool but also earnest and just. fun? (not only the music but also the visuals? hello? the fashions in this MV) def gotta be one of my most played this year

4. Lee Gi Kwang - "Predator"

ok now for a dark horse pick. I feel like in the borderline 5th gen landscape nowadays older groups are often forgotten (even though hello! 2nd gen bgs are back from the military now and are having a Moment) so people perhaps understandably overlooked this one but god this song is a bop.

is it just criminal by taemin part 2 but less sexy and with a lower budget? yes. but the song is an absolute bop and the choreo slaps in its own right so imo it's a very worthy homage especially given it captures its exact gender of "pathetic sadboy making horny mistakes and needing to dance abt it" so so perfectly,

5. Exo - "Cream Soda"

tbh not what I was expecting from an exo comeback and I was surprised that I ended up liking this so much given I didn't really care for the prerelease tracks, but the more I listened the more this grew on me?

ofc it's an exo track so the vocals are 100 emoji but the chorus and melodies are simply addictive and the choreo for this one is also just a ton of fun (the sexy little head swipe,)

also I love the outfits in this MV (everyone keeps saying this is the Weed aesthetic but honestly? with korea's whole Thing? this is exo's macklemore-style thrift shopping and/or raiding grandma's attic for hidden midcentury treasures phase. to me.) but thank u @ the universe specifically for giving us back silver haired baekhyun. bless.

6. VIXX - "Amnesia"

another underrated release tbh! this initially gave me guilty vibes w/ the abundant use of pizzes since they were released around the same time but I also just independently love this song

I feel like it's a very mature song that takes itself seriously but not in an overly self-absorbed or cheesy way (another comparison I might make is to leo's losing game from last year), the chorus is poignant and hits hard because it's so earnest—maybe especially so since they were down to 3 with this cb—but man that melody is just so gorgeous, like it haunts me

7. Dreamcatcher - "Bon Voyage"

ok if I'm gonna be real it wasn't a great year for my faves—while I liked OOTD and reason they weren't top 10 worthy for me, mx had 1 excellent release before having most of its members yoinked by the military, and I didn't love either of oneus's cbs this year

that being said! I did still like bon voyage! while I preferred the first 2 in the trilogy it still felt like a good and fitting finale, bittersweet and full of equal parts regret and hope

in many ways it feels like a harkening back to classic dreamcatcher with the Big Anime Opening Vibes™ but more somber and grown up, an unexpected summer anthem from these queens,

8. TXT - "Sugar Rush Ride"

it's been a busy year for txt and while I'm not super familiar with them and their releases are sometimes a bit hit or miss for me, when they do hit they HIT

I actually considered chasing that feeling for this list too but despite adoring the take on me-ness of it I ended up nixing it after adjusting for recency bias

sugar rush ride though, I feel is a bop that stood the test of time with its catchiness and surprisingly dark undertones, and is also one of my favorite choreos I learned this year by far like. come on. it's the epitome of Boy Group Hot.

9. Taeyang - "Vibe"

this song lived rent-free in my head for MONTHS, god it's so catchy

I actually missed when my local studio taught this song but I liked the choreo so much I learned it on my own which, predictably since it literally features 2 main dancers, was not easy but extremely worth it bc just like the song itself it's just really fun

other than that what can I say. the MV is nothing special but otherwise it's just a really solid song with Big feel good energy.

10. Kiss of Life - "Shhh"

ok,,,,,,,I don't really follow rookie groups that closely bc generally I don't feel like I'm the target audience but. out of this year's new groups I did especially like kiss of life's debut!

the MV doesn't do much for me tbh but musically it sounds uncharacteristically mature to me, in a good way—it has a subtle confidence about it that I like plus excellent vocals, and is (possibly hot take?) what I was hoping to get from newjeans this year as a continuation of their debut last year tbh

Honorable Mentions

Jungkook - "Standing Next to You"

this one just felt like cheating bc it's technically an English single and there's probably some recency bias here but I can't not mention it bc I simply love this track. I'm not even a BTS stan but it's just a jam with great vocals and instrumentals (the big band notes and MJ influence! please!) and the choreo is also SO ridiculously fun, both the chorus and the dance break

BTOB - "Wind and Wish"

this is just a wholesome song that makes you feel good, like is it a lil bit cheesy? yeah, but it's also Good Vibes Comma the Song, wearing its entire heart on its sleeve in the most endearing way. it's nostalgic and mellow and full of love for its friends and a zest for life

also special shoutout to the bridge, which in such an otherwise lowkey song did not have to go that hard and yet it Did?? that harmony gives me chills, 100% certified vocal kings would cry again

Shownu X Hyungwon - "Love Me a Little"

this is a pathetic meow meow song in the best possible way and was sadly beat out by the other slightly better pathetic meow meow songs on this list (guilty, predator, amnesia) bc it was just a really good year for them but I still think it deserves a mention bc first of all yea boi @ my mans shownu being free from the military but also the instrumental/dance break at the end is dark as hell and also SO fucking tasty

Infinite - "New Emotions"

another 2nd gen group that quietly had a renaissance this year! this song is simply a bop and while the song itself is not as memorable as some in the top 10 the choreo is actually really fun

also myungsoo looks really ridiculously fine as center in the first chorus and that's the last thing I have to say about this song,

Key - "Killer"

honestly I really liked both of key's cbs this year but I feel like killer was slept on somewhat, it's got a hint of sadboi but it's tempered by the upbeat 80s pop style, plus the grungy mullet and beret outfit from the MV was a fucking Look and a Half

to be honest, i rlly enjoyed the menu but my biggest issue was with anya taylor joy. i just didn’t find her believable at ALL and it felt like she was playing dress up the whole time, especially when she had scenes with ralph fiennes’s character. he was ACTING and she was just… doing her job i guess?

Yeah, everyone I've discussed it with has had similar complaints, even a couple of people who are more ambivalent about Anya. I had like a whole murder board going on about why she was cast lol, but things to note:

--Emma Stone was originally cast in this role, and I think that while Emma would've been better (I'm not a big fan of hers, but I think she would've been better) she still... was a type that Anya basically fits now that Emma has aged out of it. Ingenue, white, elfin, one of the current It Girls. They basically transferred what they wanted from Emma over to Anya, down to the red hair.

--Anya is not believable to me in a lot of "types", but the type I find least believable is Anya as A Woman of the People. Like, I don't know, maybe that's partially my bias coming in, but that's who you cast to represent the service industry workers? I don't know man.

--But then it's like "oh, so you buy Ralph Fiennes in that sense?". Well, not exactly; his character by the time we meet him is completely above it all and disconnected with his former self, which is part of the point. But yeah, I do buy that he is at that point because Ralph Fiennes is a very good actor and was giving? Honestly? One of the best performances of his career in that movie. Every time he was in a scene with Anya, it felt just... painfully forced. For her to be there. Because I could literally see like... 10+ expressions going across his face in a MINUTE, giving me so much without the dialogue (and I'm not even someone who's seen allll of his work lmao, I'm not a Dedicated Ralph Expert) and she was just. Normal. Flat.

--Same with Nick Hoult. Nick Hoult is, imo, a criminally underrated actor, and HIS big scene with Ralph? Fabulous. The back and forth, the way they were both giving those micro expressions and the contrasting energy and the tension? So good. The "Tyler's Bullshit" scene was my favorite moment of the movie because of the ACTING. And Anya just. Wasn't great?

--Everyone in this movie was really doing a great job and going for it, tbh. Leguizamo and Aimee Carrero did a lot with their characters' relationship with a little screen time, Janet McTeer was HILARIOUS, Judith Light was killing me, Hong Chau was INCREDIBLE!!! Another huge moment for the movie was her delivery of "tortillas", I can't. I just felt like Anya was there to be there.

I mean, Aimee Carrero could've done that role. Elle Fanning could've done that role and had more of a witty repartee with Nick. One of my friends pointed out Camila Mendes (and honestly, her dry sarcasm in Do Revenge would've been perfect for this). There were lot of girls who I think would've done a better job. I feel like Margot was supposed to be a starkly sardonic character, and instead she just came off as forced.
