Vocaloid Tourney Submissions Results and Preliminaries Info
56 out of 64 spots in the bracket have been filled. List of advancing songs is below the cut.
For the preliminaries, there are 86* songs competing for 8 open spots in the bracket. (again, full list below)
The prelims will be structured as follows:
Part A: *2 songs - a mini pre-preliminary round of sorts between two versions of "Play" by shr - the original Kagamine Rin version vs an UTAU cover featuring Matusdappoiyo, since both versions were submitted. The Winner of this round will participate in part B. (One day long)
Part B: 85 songs - 17 matches of 5 songs, with 1 winner each. I will be releasing 3 or 4 matches every other day to stagger them. Winners of part B will move on to part C. (16 days long)
Part C: 17 songs - 2 matches of 8/9 songs, each with the top 4 songs advancing. Both matches will be released the same day (One week long)
if anyone has any objections to this, or any better ideas, lemme know now, bc that was the best I could come up with. I didnt want the first round of matches to be between too many songs at once, as I felt that would probably be less accurate, and more intimidating so less people would listen to all the songs....... idk
Part A will be up TOMORROW, SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4TH, and will only last one day, bc I want to get to the actual prelims. More information on the rest of the prelims will be up during the week.
List of songs advancing to the bracket or preliminaries below the cut:

We've had 16 years of our best girl! She's brought the world, and this community, together with the wonderful songs created using her. There's been a lot of amazing melodies brought to us with the help of Miku, so let's see what you guys' favorites were!

There were several in first place throughout the day, but in the end, the winner was Love is War by... well, also ryo (18.8%), who also took second place with World is Mine! (niconico link)

In an unprecedented twist... 2020 saw a 3-way tie! With 15.8% of the votes each, Digital Girl by Kira, Darling Dance by Kairiki bear, and Because You're Here by PinocchioP all take the win, with Jackpot Sad Girl by syudou just one vote behind! (Digital Girl youtube link) (Darling Dance youtube link) (Because You're Here youtube link)

And in our last poll, for the current year, DECO*27 and PinocchioP both snag another win with (Not) a Devil (33%)! A fitting win, I'd say, being such a wonderful showcase of how different producers use Miku in different ways! (youtube link)
Tumblr media
~~~
Some other information and stats:
(If I counted correctly) PinocchioP received the most total unique song submissions at 15, with DECO*27 right behind at 13!
wowaka's Rolling Girl received the most total submissions!
PinocchioP received the most wins at 5 - unsurprisingly when you consider that PinocchioP won the producer poll a few months ago!
DECO*27's Ghost Rule received the most total votes on any poll! (30.1% of 184 votes = 56 votes)
Propaganda by Crusher was the first non-Japanese song to get submitted. Digital Girl was the only non-Japanese song to receive a win
Annnd... if anyone's curious, my votes were:
Miracle Paint by OSTER project
Love is War by ryo
Romeo and Cinderella by doriko
Rolling Girl by wowaka
Senbonzakura by WhiteFlame
This is the Happiness and Peace of Mind Committee by Utata-P
Self-Inflicted Achromatic by nekobolo (it was so hard choosing between that and Fakery Tale)
Sea Lily Deep Sea Tale by n-buna (also very difficult choosing for that year)
My R by Kurage-P
Ghost Rule by DECO*27
Hibana by DECO*27 (also a difficult year to pick)
Garando by Picon
Psychogram by DECO*27 (I really like deco niina-san, okay)
Cynical Night Plan by Ayase (another difficult year)
God-ish by PinocchioP
Hollow (Utsuru o Aogu) by Choisauce (which I thought would receive more votes....)
(Not) a Devil by DECO*27 and PinocchioP
I hope you all enjoyed, and once again, Happy Birthday to our girl!
Vocaloid Songs You Might Have Missed - December 2023
Welcome back to my blog. Just like that, it's the last post for the year... never mind that it's already 2024. But for this longtime fan, 2023 was the best year in ages for Vocaloid music.
Something I mentioned in an earlier entry is that so much Vocaloid music over the past few years has felt like bait for singers to cover. (And to paste their avatars over in the videos... I'm far from the first person to notice this!) I don't mention this entirely to be a hater, but to contrast with the type and quality of release I've seen this year. Many of the 'vtuber bait' songs I poke fun at are truly great and destined to live on forever in Vocaloid history, but I've always felt a difference between songs that use vocal synths in the absence of a human singer and those that lean into the synthetic nature of the voices and the characters that represent them.
Over the past few years, a renewed interest in idiosyncratic voicebanks like Adachi Rei, Utane Uta (entirely synthetic), and the MAIDLOIDs (derived from a h-game moan synthesis engine) has coincided with technological advancement: the entry of SynthV, Neutrino, and CeVIO voicebanks have been fuel for an explosion in new music -- a genuine Vocaloid renaissance.
SynthV Teto has been particularly instrumental in all this since her release in April. In mere months, SV Teto has catapulted at least one producer into online superstardom, and an associated reevaluation of UTAU Teto has seen her behind some of the biggest songs this year. Nostalgia was part of the reason 2023 was the Year of Teto, but the SynthV voicebank, which totally maintained Teto's character while shaking off the computer-y crunchiness, is an achievement well worth the fanfare it received. With December's release of SynthV GUMI, are we in for a similar treat in 2024?
Anyways, last month's post is here, and this month's is under the break.
P.S. Speaking of nostalgia... did you know that Dixie Flatline is back?
Full playlist here, individual tracks below.
心酔 / あすわど feat. 重音テト Standard voca-pop rock, but something about the stuttering drums and a finely tuned Teto is *chef's kiss* more than enough for me.
死んだっぽいぜ / クソ犬 feat. 知声 I'd never heard a Vocaloid producer take on this kind of rock, somewhat reminiscent of pre-Warner Devo and a dead ringer for ZAZEN BOYS at their best. I also never expected to hear a Maki cover of "Lithium," so this producer is my current king of breaking new ground.
アサルト / いおぎりょう feat. 知声 Ryo Iogi's Teto hyperpop from September is one of my favorite tracks of the year, and I've been anxious to hear something new from him. Like the last song on this list, Chis-A's voice lends itself well to a good grungy guitar riff.
かくほ / よかど feat. 足立レイ Like Chis-A, Rei's voice pairs naturally with a certain kind of music... usually the skittery electronic dance-pop kind, so it's refreshing to hear a Coaltar of the Deepers-esque song featuring her.
sh*ellll;gar~ey / あずきねこp feat. カゼヒキβ, 初音ミク Finally, Kazehiki Beta hyperpop!
エビチャーハン! (You’re Telling Me A SHRIMP Fried This Rice?!) / Jamie Paige feat. 初音ミク Jamie Paige is behind just about every English Vocaloid song that I like (sorry Crusher-P, but I'm not an edgy teenager anymore), so I wasn't surprised to love her celebration of the Snow Miku 2024 "Shrimpku" design. And it's always funny to hear Miku say fuck.
ルナシー / 報瀬 feat. 初音ミク, 重音テト There's something so satisfying about hearing a "traditional" vocasynth sing alongside one of the next-gen, realistic-sounding ones. I love getting hit back-to-back with a crunchy melismatic Miku call and Teto soaring smoothly in response, especially paired with an uptempo saxophone riff that makes me want to shout ᴶaᵃaˢₒⁿ ᴰₑʳᵤᵘᵤˡₒᵒₒᵒ.
ドキドキ / tiputica feat. AiSuu I can't find anything about this artist. They have a Twitter account with one post about this song, zero followers or follows, and that's it. If anyone out there has more information on this artist, hit me up.
マジカルメモリー / in the blue shirt feat. 初音ミク in the blue shirt isn't new to Vocaloid, but he's much more known among netlabel followers for his sunny, sample-driven plunderphonic pop. His Miku music follows that feeling.
今日のずんだはみなごろし / ちから feat. ずんだもん,東北ずん子, イタコ, きりたん, 四国めたん, ナクモ I barely know where to start with this one. Like, uh, most people who don't listen to Pentatonix, I'm not particularly fond of a certain brand of a capella music, but when it's done this well, with such a satisfying complexity of harmony and counterpoint, and for Zundamon's birthday of all occasions, how can you not fall in love?
サンタの眠る夜 / ぐーすかぽー feat. 初音ミク The holidays have just wrapped up, and while there's never any shortage of Vocaloid Christmas songs, ones that are actually enjoyable to listen to are few and far between... though I think there's a new market opening for New Years music!
Trajectory / ごーぶす feat. KAITO Hey, it's KAITO's first appearance on here! A chill ballad with a beautiful rnb chord progression.
え?ちょっと待って寒すぎない? / asanuko feat. 鏡音レン Speaking of rnb, I think I've mentioned on here how much I love Rin for rnb/garage. asanuko's song is funny as hell, and I'm sure I'll be singing it under my breath as the winter chill continues to settle in, but mostly I'm impressed at how good Rin sounds for this kind of music.
夜空の再構成 / ヨハク feat. 初音ミク This style of song/video has been getting popular recently... electric piano, rapid-fire bass, intricate drum programming, synth leads that twist and turn around the melody, and all of the chord/time information you could ever hope for. A little showboating for music nerds, but it's stimulating enough and I do like it.
ボクにあいそうなはこ / MIDy feat. カゼヒキβ Finally, Kazehiki Beta hy-- wait a second.
ずんだ体育大学コール / さたぱんP feat. ずんだもん, 春日部つむぎ, WhiteCUL, 四国めたん, 白上虎太郎, 青山龍星 The Zundamon gods demand a sacrifice of joke songs, so here it is. See if you can count the references in the zunda dances.
*・゚+。園にて.゚ / ukaihi feat. 初音ミク ukaihi is 3 for 3 on making it onto this list. I'm sure #4 will make it on here, too... if they don't become popular enough for most people to come across their music first!
絵空事未来 / 真島ゆろ feat. 初音ミク Where the ukaihi song seemed to float, this one skips. 真島ゆろ is one of those producers who can change styles from song to song, and this take on a sasakure.uk-gone-lighthearted style is a winner.
ナイトランナー / d0tc0mmie feat. 重音テト Osaka mentioned... d0c0mmie did a great job capturing a feeling with this one. The laid back - but quick - drums bring back memories of running around Namba with friends way too late into the night.
ハイパー. / ikomai feat.Ciちゃんβ My favorite submission from #PVSF2023R -- so obviously the video is great, but the original track from ikomai blew me away. I think my taste in music is easily read from my blog posts, and this kind of song is nothing out of the ordinary for me, but the Jacob Collier style turnaround at 0:58 knocked me out.
エグい速度での俯瞰 / もっちりしたパン feat.可不, ナースロボ_タイプT Nurse Robo Type T and Kafu doing what they do best -- talking and mirroring a superspeed jazz fusion piano riff.
NSFW Bonus - メスガキヨーデル / enunichime feat. 重音テト First of all, I have never heard a vocasynth yodel before, and I was not expecting it to sounds this good. Second of all, you can't be making songs about this white baby.
OKAY THIS IS A VERY RANDOM SEKAI VOCALOP DUMP BECAUSE IM GOING THROUGH A HYPERFIXATION
my autistic brain couldn't help but notice that mafumafu is the only first rotation producer who hasn't reappeared in the game since my dear come back it's been almost three years (technically police piccadilly is also missing but he's working for deco via otoiro so i assume he's involved at least somewhere)
and since i'm at it there are 11 songs where deco*27 is credited in some way 4 of them are commissions and it's upsetting and funny as hell at the same time
kemu technically didn't get a solo event but still helped deco and marasy so 0.5+0.5=1??
almost all of dreamers got niigo commissions (syudou, surii, tsumiki and niru) except for ayase and rokuro but idk if the latter is still active another unit that proseka has completed like a pokedex is elc aka heavenz harry and koyori kamitsubaki are probably next seeing how guiano moimi and misumi are on board as of now
also also!! guiano is the only one whos vs features a non-vocaloid synthesizer because he's affiliated with kafu's developers directly!!!
technically mikito pinocchio and picon are the only producers who have managed to sneak their vocals into the game kashika's original version is a duet between miku and loin but it was cut for some reason... even though roki is literally there
kujira (or whale don't sleep or whatever) has only appeared in the game during cup noodle collaboration and still hasn't been heard from
rambling over peace out remember happiness is stored in "music by"
Ooh this was very interesting thank you anon!
Also adding to your first point: Takuya Watanabe (commissioned for From Tokyo alonside Natsushiro Takaaki) has never had a song in the game since or before.
Some other producers that only got one song during the first year ish and never again are: Hinata Electric Works (Buriki no Dance cover), Karasuyasabou (Showtime Ruler), Umetora (Ifuudoudou cover), CRUSHER P (ECHO cover), yuukiss (Nostalogic cover), doriko (Romeo & Cinderella cover), EZFG (Totemo Itai Itagaritai cover), nanou (Hello How Are You cover) and Sohta (Ikanaide cover).
There’s probably more than that, these are just the ones I can remember. Also some of them are probably inactive or don’t have other notable songs, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you.
would u perhaps like to talk abt ur fav voice banks and/or producers
i WOULD love to, thank you for picking up the ask bait,
my favorite crypton vocaloids are actually Rin and Len (do not separate them.jpeg) but other than that I also really like Gumi and Ia, and if I feel particularly like dropping a more niche one, Yuzuki Yukari. (and if we're counting SynthV, Solaria, but that seems like a cheat answer almost because her voice is so good)
That said I could list more that I like (and I did already list quite a few there that's beyond "favorite" but ya know) but beyond those it's more like a divide between "I really like the design but don't have enough songs I like to qualify them as favorites" to "I have a lot of specific songs I like but I wouldn't necessarily think of myself as a fan of the particular vocaloids that are featured in them"
As for favorite producers, one of my Favorites is GHOST, and I particularly like the songs Reckless Battery Burns, Aura, Honey I'm Home, Chattering Lack of Common Sense, The Distortionist, Happy Days, and Appetite of a People-Pleaser I'm not very good at picking just a few, haha
I'm also a fan of Kagerou Project, so a bunch of those songs by Jin
And for a producer who does make a lot of songs featuring Miku, I like PinocchioP and some specific songs like God-ish (fucking banger honestly), Apple dot com, I'm Glad You're Evil Too, and eight hundred (though the audio on eight hundred isn't The Best in my opinion, I really like the lyrics)
I'm also generally a fan of a lot of DECO*27 songs, but my favorite there is definitely Ghost Rule
And since I'm still here I'll shoutout a couple other songs I haven't mentioned yet; People Become Ghosts by ive, Undead Enemy by Giga, You Adventure Log Has Vanished! by Jesus-P, Lost One's Weeping by Neru (a classic. to me. and Neru has some other good ones too), A Tale of Six Trillion Years and a Night by kemu (another classic), Copycat by VocaCircus, Mahou by kyaami (it's a cover, but a link to the original is in the description, and it's a really good cover) and Again by Crusher
I'll stop myself from rambling further here, cause I've spent quite a while answering this ask lol (even after I typed that I went back and added a couple)
I know it's most likely will never happen, but I would love it if GHOST, Crusher P, Steampianist, Vane, RIP P, or other english Vocaloid producers would make a song for a horror game or movie
DD/PM'S PLAYLIST OF VOCALOID SONGS ! (2023)
Tumblr media
Hi! So, I have been in this side of the internet for a long while, and on the request of one of my mutuals, I've made what I call THE Vocaloid playlist (In my opinion!!)
This is separated in two categories; CLASSICS that everyone should/does know, and BANGERS, that for some reason or another didn't make the classics.
There are some additional categories that I've added, those being: weird songs I really like in some way or another, and songs that are technically UTAU or derivatives.
They are also separated by language and grouped by producers (and credited, hopefully all correctly) but there is no general order to them - important noting here as well that some of the producers might nowadays not be the best people around, but I didn't take that into account.
Please enjoy this!! I put a lot of effort, so I'd love to see any opinions or additions!
Now let's get started!
no literally... the usual western vocaloid song sounds like the producer doesn't know a single thing about neither music theory nor lyric writing. why are we trying to cram in a book's worth of lyrics into a single verse and why are we ignoring stress patterns and beat accents
this pretty much describes the problem with many engloid songs. i think some of their worst traits overall are
some are extremely insistent on continuing to use really old vbs like gumi v3 english and try to push them beyond what theyre capable of lyrically/tonally and the resulting sound is gibberish or nearly earrape. they will also use miku or megurine luka who cannot sing in english very well, and even the best tuning possible on them will always sound a little off. like solaria is right there. eleanor is right there. yuma is there too lol like just switch to them and use them more so that they become more popular like they deserve.
lyrics are often childishly bad like kira's MONSTER. sometimes they cant fit a sentence into a musical phrase, like the lyrics "blocked by the voice of a demon inside" in creep-p's Exorcism. there will also occasionally be the lesser-known, amateur artist who will try to replicate ghost and pals' lyricism but will miss the mark entirely by making each word overly long and complicated so the result is unpronounceable word salad. this was kind of a problem with riproducer at the beginning of their output but they have gotten significantly better and now their songs are almost on par with some of ghost and pals' best work.
music will often not be catchy or interesting, or only the chorus will be catchy but the verses will be forgettable. pretty every single song by Ferry, who makes really good mv's, is forgettable because ferry lacks an understanding of how to build and develop a melody; their melodic lines just kind of ramble on and on like a guy at a wedding who blanked out on his speech. as annoying as music theory is it's best people learn the basics of it. we can't all be kikuo, who didn't know any theory but was able to make good music because of his technological prowress and extreme attention to detail. many songs will have potential, but the artist has no idea how to develop their ideas. propaganda! by crusher-p is an example of this. the bridge is one of the weakest things i have ever heard, and the lyrics do not help.
instrumentals are often extremely annoying, like overly simplistic chiptune sounds.
you can come off anon lol if u want to reply i dont have many followers or anything
*autistically asks u abt ur favorite songs featuring ur favorite loids*
AHHHH TY ANON FOR LETTING ME BE AUTISTIC AKSKSKDK
ok SO its actually hard for me to picm favorites when it comes to vocaloid songs so. sorry if i seem indecisive AKSKDKDK i cant really ascribe favorite songs to specific vocaloids, but i will Try My Best and just say some songs i rly like!!!
SO my fav producers are giga and kira bc they are the most Stimmable in my opinion. ofc "getcha" is a big fav gumi/miku song of mine AKSKSJ i also like "bring it on," "masked bitch," and the giga remix of "electric angel" ft. the kagamines!! as for kira, i love "digital girl," "riding with u," "i do what i want," and "monster"!!!
mitchie m is also a big fav of mine!! i rly like "seraphim on the ring," "ohedo julia night," and "freely tomorrow"!! i have a lot of nostalgia for freely tomorrow bc it was one of the first miku songs i heard 💖💖💖
as for miscellaneous songs i associate w specific vocas, one miku song i rly like is "magical doctor" by maretu which is. VERY fucky wucky but thats why i like it akskskd
for gumi i love "again" by crusher (kinnie song hee hee)!! i also like the gumilily duets "over the time dance" by easypop and "just for tonight" by circus ofc 💖💖💖💖
my fav luka songs r probs "happy synthesizer" (also by easypop and featuring gumi) and "luka luka night fever" by samfree!!! tho i also looove "double lariat" by agoaniki!!
for rin i ofc like "fear garden" by chaa, "meltdown" by iroha, and "the lost one is weeping" by neru!!! rins voice is sooo gooodd shes my fav of the kagamines!! OH and i also like the popipo cover ft. her and teto!! that one is by jun i think
for len i am CONSTANTLY stimming to "telecaster b boy" by 3, both the full version and the original. they r just. So Good i also love "holy lance explosion boy" by rerulili
for kaito i have to go w "cantarella" by kurousa!! also um. this isnt rly a kaito song but hes featured in it so uh. i unironically like "insanity" by circus p AKSKDJDJ
for meiko ill be honest i. dont listen to a lot of meiko songs bc they arent as prevalent unfortunately 😔😔😔 but i DO like "evil food eatern conchita" by mothy bc Nostalgia (also my gf thinks conchita is hot AKSKDK)
honestly same goes for gakupo too akskdkd he isnt rly as popular in songs as he is in fanworks??? so ill have to go with "the madness of duke venomania" also by mothy. "but vani isnt one of ur Big Discomforts seeing gumi and/or luka being shipped w men" yes but its ok bc they LEAVE his ass in the end!!!! so its fine akdjdjd
and when it comes to lily, niki is the GOD. i rly love "wave" and "jitter doll" a lot, i loooove how they tune her its SO GOOD!!!!
ANYWAY thats all i can think of for now. thank u for letting me talk abt vocaloids. i might add to this post later. I Have Autism
Rick: Hey wait, isn’t GHOST the one who made the, uh, Crow’s Trial song?
Pluto: Mhm!
Rick: I like that one, let’s go with that, GHOST
VOCALOID LEGENDS - 2015 Part 3
#216 - Secret Police (Buriru) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 15-07-03, Upload Date: 10-11-09
It’s a song based on the Gestapo. The fast-paced lyrics and a very high-pitched Miku makes the song pop out among the dark turns in the recent. Honestly sounds more like an ‘80s odd synth group, with a guitar solo, then something into the ‘40s.
#217 - ECHO (Circus-P, Crusher) [GUMI]
Achievement Date: 15-07-10, Upload Date: 14-10-08
The English Song on this list, still one of the more popular songs and the second most watched VOCALOID song on this list. Unfortunately the English VOCALOID scene came after YouTube became the main site around ‘18-’19, so it’ll be a long while until there’s another English song (COPYCAT maybe?) on this list. Honestly set the grounds for what English VOCALOID songs sound like (unless it’s like an Oliver song…)
#218 - Love Trial (40mP) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 15-07-18, Upload Date: 14-06-10
Probably the other song by 40mP that you know, and the song that really gets into his kinky themes, you know being a love trial and you can lock me up or whatever, but I think that piano rock kind of smooths down these risque lyrics, and that’s what makes the song memorable, that playful interplay between the two is the strongest.
#219 -  WAVE (niki) [Lily]
Achievement Date: 15-07-24, Upload Date: 12-09-22
There are two types of niki songs, unfortunately only one type is on this list (for now), the first type is this Umetora like Progressive Rock song, where sometimes it goes full rock but mostly it’s a dance tune, basically. Lily is always kind of middling, but she doesn’t distract from the addicting beats and synth production.
#220 - SloWMotioN (PinocchioP) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 15-07-26, Upload Date: 14-05-27
Probably the most famous early PinocchioP song. Kind of a wistful song about life and its discontents, reminds of me of Once Upon a Me, which is a DECO*27 song unlike any other, the song doesn’t go all out like other PinocchioP songs at the time, and I think that really clears the sense of what the song is about and that general feel. Some say this song has that Enka feeling, and I think it’s the Yukkuri nature, honestly.
#221 - My Colorful Confuse (manbo-p) [GUMI]
Achievement Date: 15-07-26, Upload Date: 12-02-28
It’s about GUMI who is late for her graduation and there are just so many obstacles, and this is just mambo-p at its most ridiculous. Strangely this song was the song that made them go major apparently! Even that sweet turn is ridiculous, so that’s that song.
#222 - 2D Dream Fever (PolyphonicBranch) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 15-08-03, Upload Date: 12-02-14
PolyphonicBranch enters into the list. Their songs are always hard to say other than it usually has a lot of electronics, this particular song is a bit too constrained than his typical songs, I believe, and it’s also a bit darker, I remember. Yeah, it’s there.
#223 - Irony (Scop) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 15-08-17, Upload Date: 12-05-24
Scop is an interesting VOCA-P. He’s definitely more of that sentimental writer, and this is his more straightforward song before he kind of branches out in his later songs. But Scop is never a bad producer, the song isn’t spectacular but it’s fine.
#224 - The World's Lifespan and the Last Day (Suzumu mafumafu) [GUMI]
Achievement Date: 15-08-18, Upload Date: 13-09-05
Yes, the funny thing is that Suzumu’s more famous songs tend to be stolen, and so this is mafumafu’s first entry, his first actual entry is quite a long time later. Song itself definitely has a bit of mafumafu stuff, although he definitely changed his tack as he went later on, and instrumentation would have been different… I mean this is your typical piano rock, which serves the music okay, but mafumafu would do something more.
