Sparked by the artwork posted by @spookyshoosh envisioning Data’s off-duty outfits, being the anorak that I am I have gathered together all of the occasions where Data appears in the show out of uniform.
There are surprisingly quite a few but what is intriguing is none of them (apart from Sherlock Holmes) were his own choices. So I give you:
Carlos (The Long Goodbye)
Sherlock Holmes (Elementary Dear Data)
Standup comedian (The Outrageous Okona)
The hideous but nicely figure accentuating purple creation (The Most Toys)
Friar Tuck (Q-pid)
Henry V (The Defector)
Prospero (Emergence)
Ebenezer Scrooge (Devil's Due)
Romulan civilian disguise (Unification)
Psychiatric Doctor's outfit for stage play (Frame of Mind)
Assortment of 19th century costumes to blend in (Time's Arrow)
Barkon IV pre-Industrial garb as his uniform was banjaxed (Thine Own Self)
21st century civilian dress (First Contact)
B'aku civilian dress (Insurrection)
In his off duty life aboard the Enterprise Data always wears his regular uniform, even under his holdeck outfits. The only deviation is the dress uniform in a few episodes and a command red uniform in Chain of Command (in which to be fair did look hot AF) However I don't count the red uniform in Future Imperfect or the black "commando" outfit in Frame of Mind as it's implied these images are in Riker's imagination. Ditto the various ensembles in "A Fistful of Datas" as this was a holoprogram glitch not Data himself.
So to sum up, it seems Data never wore any civilian clothes of his own choice, probably because he had no need for it. But to end this post with an amuse bouche, here's a snippet on Quora from a few years back:
"In the episode, “In Theory” Data describes to Jenna how he arranges his wardrobe by type and then color to make it easier to find what he wants. This implies that, at minimum, he changes clothes occasionally and that he owns a sufficient amount that they must be organized.
Ipso facto, he must change his uniform often enough, most likely for basic cleanliness, wear and tear, etc. Even if he himself does not perspire, his regular contact with organic beings and their surroundings means he must eventually get dirty and clean himself or he would become Typhoid Mary of Starfleet."

as someone currently watching tng for the first time (only in season 4), it is a little odd when i see fans say that "no one ever recognizes data having emotions." like data denies it, but so often the moments when he's explicitly denying them are when he's talking with a character who's like. "yeah the thing ur experiencing is normal humans often (mourn/doubt themselves/whatever)" and WHEN data denies it they just kindof. give him a look tht to ME reads like his emotions are just an open secret for everyone else and theyre not gonna fight him on it. theyre not generally acknowledged, but like, i dont think ive seen a bridge member outright deny it except for deanna before the beard bit (tho idr her exact wording), and tht was early on.

So, I just had a thought (& possible realization that could be canon?):
As I'm sure many of us TNG fans are aware, it's never canonically addressed where, how, or when exactly Data got Spot. However, based on the order of the episodes, Spot wasn't shown or mentioned until "Data's Day", & because we were shown Data's quarters several times throughout Seasons 1-3 without any indications of a cat living with him, we can assume that he got Spot somewhere either in the end of Season 3 or the beginning of Season 4 (I know the argument could be made that he could have still had Spot, it just wasn't very clearly established or shown, but for the sake of my theory, let's assume that not showing Spot or evidence of Data having her indicates that he didn't have her yet).
The events of "Brothers" occurs just several episodes before "Data's Day". We saw in "Brothers" that after Dr. Soong died, Data took some of his father's things with him (i.e. the toy dinosaurs that he gave to the two brothers who were also in the episode). I think it's highly unlikely that Data would have only taken those two dinosaurs from his father's place, & I think he almost certainly took a lot more of his father's things with him (i.e. he probably took some of his books, artwork, etc.).
I think it can also be assumed that Dr. Soong didn't like being alone, & always preferred the company of another being (his sons & Juliana, for example). After the Crystalline Entity attacked, Juliana left, Data joined Starfleet, & Dr. Soong was left all by himself on that whole planet, I think he got really lonely, but didn't know or have any other person in his life that he could seek companionship with. Not wanting to go through the intense emotional & physical tolls of creating another android son again, & being unable to find another partner or spouse, I think he would have probably gotten himself a pet as a last-ditch effort to curb his loneliness.
But what would his pet be? Perhaps a cat...?
Long story short, I propose this theory: Spot was originally Dr. Soong's cat, & after he died & Data was looking through his place to determine all the things he wanted to keep, he found Spot, & knew he had to take her with him.
I'd have to rewatch "Brothers" to look for any evidence of Dr. Soong having a cat, as well review the episodes after "Brothers" & before "Data's Day" to see if they showed Data's quarters clearly catless again, to support this theory, but I genuinely think this could be how Data got Spot

"Lieutenant, what is the purpose of this activity?"
Data's hand, surprisingly warm, rested steady in your own. Matter of fact, his hand was perfectly still; it was your hand's imperfect movements that caused it to move at all. Heavily focused on the task at hand, the question lingered in the air. The brush swept across the nail, leaving liquid pigment in its wake. Delicately, you evenly distributed the lacquer.. Then, with a relieved breath, you straightened away from his hand and deposited the brush back into the small bottle.
It was your idea. Data, with all his access to information and vast knowledge of early Earth history, knew nothing about human spa days. More accurately, he knew of them, but the greater purpose of taking care of oneself was lost on him.
"Well, nothing, really." You blew lightly on his nails, urging the yellow paint to dry faster. "I think it started as a beauty thing. Humans, mostly women, would paint their nails a bright color - like red or pink - and it would catch the eye of others. It became a form of vanity as it progressed, before it sort of died out."
"Intriguing." His brow furrowed at his hands, eyes distant as he skimmed through the database in his mind for more information. In a second, his eyes were focused once more on you. "Ah, I see. Painting one's nails became a popular form of self-expression in the early 20th century, temporarily increasing confidence and gathering the attention of others due to the humans' limited visible color spectrum.
"According to my records, disputes arose as to who would be allowed to wear nail polish, sometimes resulting in violence. I do not understand this. It is a rather simple activity - how could it cause such disagreement?"
You lifted his other hand and began the process of painting the nails once more. Your handiwork wasn't perfect - small bits of the paint attached itself to his cuticles, resulting in a non-uniform appearance - but the Android didn't seem to mind (or understand that it was 'imperfect') and you were enjoying the easy, repetitive motions.
"That's..." You struggled to find the word as you tried cleaning up a large dab of paint on his finger, the result of a sudden hand twitch. "Complicated. Back then, and I guess even still now, humans were uncomfortable with people even slightly different from them. They built up bullshit 'rules' to describe femininity and masculinity, and anybody that didn't fit into those societal standards was ostracized. It was mostly men who were made fun of for painting their nails, since it's considered a 'feminine' activity. They would be labeled as homosexual, regardless of their actual preferences in sex. It was a way to bully them for enjoying something that wasn't deemed masculine enough.
"But," you added, smiling softly at the man sitting across from you, "it was an excellent form of rebellion against those standards. People of all genders would wear the 'wrong' clothing or indulge themselves in things that went against the status quo. Of course, it died out once universal gender equality was established in... 2037?"
Data nodded, confirming the date. "Quite correct, lieutenant. The Complete Gender Equality Bill was passed in October of 2037, and stated that all persons, regardless of biological sex or personal gender identity, were allowed the same rights to equal pay, marriage, privacy, and expression."
His mouth opened for a brief second, ready to explain the various amendments that had been made to the original bill and their impacts on history, before shutting. You glanced up from your work in surprise when he didn't continue to ramble on.
"What's wrong?"
He was frowning again, appearing almost upset. "I have discovered that my tendency to, as the Captain puts it, 'babble' makes those around me uncomfortable and irritated. In an effort to avoid this, I have resorted to shortening my explanations."
Now it was your turn to frown. "You shouldn't have to do that, Data."
"No? But it makes my colleagues uncomfortable when I babble."
"Don't tell me they cut you off..."
Data remained silent, adhering to your wish.
You sighed, upset but also aggravated. Briefly, Data wondered if it was his literal interpretation that troubled you, as he often got confused with human expressions as such.
"You consider them your friends, correct?"
He considered this for a moment. "The definition of friend requires that we share a 'bond of mutual affection.' I do not believe this is true."
"Okay, then, what about companions?"
His head tilted, searching for the definition. "Ah, yes. 'A person or animal with whom one spends a lot of time with or with whom one travels.' My relationship with the rest of the Bridge crew does, indeed, satisfy this definition."
"Then they shouldn't do that. Friends or companions or colleagues or whatever should have a mutual form of respect. You don't just cut off somebody you respect. It's rude and mean and unfair."
"I do not comprehend their actions as mean; I am incapable of feeling that emotion."
You huffed, clearly annoyed at the topic of discussion. "That doesn't matter! What matters is that they know it's rude, but they don't care because they don't hold a mutual respect for you. They see you as lesser than them and it's not fair!"
"Inquiry: what is unfair about it?"
You barely stopped yourself from grabbing his shoulders and shaking to emphasize your point. Instead, eager to release the tension running through your veins, you stood from your bed and began pacing around your room.
“Regardless of whether you are an android or a human, or an android with human emotions, the Captain is human, the first officer is human - they have the emotions and rationelle to know what is rude or inappropriate when talking with someone else. Whether you are able to perceive it as rude means nothing when the people actively silencing you know it’s wrong! By continuing to interrupt you and cut you off, they are actively letting you know in a passive aggressive - possibly even subconscious - way that you are less than human. They claim to accept and encourage your personal goal of embracing human emotions, but actively play a role in stunting that growth by not giving you the space or time of day a normal human would get.
“It’s unfair because it’s hypocritical and demeaning and, ugh, so very human of them to look down on anything slightly different from them.” A long, drawn out sigh escaped you, stealing with it the last remnants of your anger and frustration. You plopped back down on the bed, laying unceremoniously across from Data.
It takes you a minute to gather the energy to sit back up. Your outburst has drained you of energy. After a long work day bustling from control panel to control panel, reattaching wires or rerouting power, you had just enough energy to have a quiet moment with Data. And now it was all gone. So much for a relaxing spa day.
“Lieutenant?”
You hum to let him know you’re listening even as you twist the yellow bottle of paint shut and retrieve the sealing top coat of polish from a miniature makeup bag.
“If, as you suggest, this repetitive behavior is detrimental to my goal, what would you suggest I do to confront the issue?”
Halfway to reaching his hand, Data holds it out for you, meeting you in a familiar middle ground. His hands are still warm and steady. Your brushing movements are clumsier than before. He would have gone so far as to say careless, but the change in your demeanor was akin to exhaustion, so he did not say anything.
You sighed. “If it really doesn’t bother you, do nothing. If you think they really do have a good reason for cutting you off, do nothing. But…” You placed his right hand back in his lap to dry and picked up his left hand. “I think you should mention it, at least. You deserve to be treated with respect, even if you do have a tendency to ‘babble’.”
Data’s mind rushed to consider the possibilities, and his own ‘emotions’. While, no, he did not feel irritation or unfairness in his colleague’s actions, he considered your empathetic viewpoint. Rationally, there were times when he was explaining something in detail to the Captain, something he felt was of importance to the mission at hand, only to be cut off and left lacking in the satisfaction of the explanation. It was not illogical to interpret this as an early form of irritation or inadequacy.
On the other hand, he could understand in certain situations that his extensive elaborating was unhelpful, such as listing times down to their seconds or stating every single number past a decimal point rather than rounding up - topics he often got cut off on.
Having the facts laid bare before him, it was easy to come to a consensus. If he could round up his numbers and calculate how vital the information was before continuing to elaborate on insignificant matters, there would be less need to be interrupted. And if his colleagues on the Bridge could conclude whether or not the information was vital, and learn to cut him off in a ‘kinder’ manner, there would be less interrupting overall.
When he zoned back in from his contemplations, you were softly blowing along his nails.
“Lieutenant?” You hummed again, carefully running your thumbpad over the lacquer to ensure it was dry and continuing to blow when one was a little wet. “I have considered your suggestions and have concluded the best course of action. From my understanding, when humans do not communicate their issues with one another, the problems begin to increase in magnitude. It would be beneficial for myself and my companions to communicate these issues as I have with you and find a middle ground with which to continue forward.”
You brushed your thumb over his nails once again before letting his hands go. You grinned up at him, eyes softened with fatigue. “I think that’s a good idea, Data.” You smiled a little bit wider when Data’s lips curled into an awkward facsimile of a grin.
As he returned to his room, leaving you with an in-depth description of the Complete Gender Equality Bill as you drifted off for the evening he considered how fitting it was to be wearing a symbol of rebellion and standing up for oneself.

DOSSIER CHEAT SHEET
LEGAL NAME: Data Soong
NICKNAME[S]: He doesn't have one, but would love to have one. So, send in your best Data nicknames for mah boi! (Although I like the one Mirror!Barclay gave him in a personal log, which is "Picard's pet android.")
DATE OF BIRTH ACTIVATION: February 2, 2338
GENDER: Male
PLACE OF BIRTH ACTIVATION: Omicron Theta colony
CURRENTLY LIVING: On the U.S.S. Enterprise
SPOKEN LANGUAGES: English, French, binary, and probably a lot more (Earth languages as well as alien languages). This funky lil' android is literally a walking ChatGPT, albeit more advanced.
EDUCATION: Starfleet Academy.
HAIR COLOR: Depends on the lighting; sometimes it's dark brown / brown, at other times, it's auburn.
EYE COLOR: A greenish yellow (or chartreuse, according to Google).
HEIGHT: 1.80 / 5'9''
WEIGHT: 100 kg
FAMILY INFORMATION
SIBLING[S]: B-4 and Lore, his older brothers (and Altan Inigo Soong, I suppose, although I'd like to think of him as Data's half-brother, since Juliana never mentioned him, so he might have had a different mother? God knows what Noonian has been up to in that weird jungle hideout of him).
PARENT[S]: Doctor Noonian Soong and Juliana Soong
RELATIVE[S]: Adam Soong, Arik Soong, and Ira Graves, but idk if he even qualifies lol.
CHILDREN: Lal, Dahj and Soji (and technically an entire planet of androids, but let's not over-complicate things).
PET[S]: SPOT! His precious cat!
RELATIONSHIP INFORMATION
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Tbh, I've thought about this a lot, but never wrote it down as a proper headcanon; I'd like Data to represent the minority and state that he's aromantic — he's possibly bordering on the asexuality spectrum as well. And as for his preference, he doesn't have one; not only does his programming prohibit him from discriminating between genders and withhold him from engaging in favouritism, he's also genuinely fascinated by everyone. In other words, he doesn't nurture a strong preference for a specific gender. However, since he's aromantic he's not really interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with anyone; it's primarily friendships he's after, familial or platonic.
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Data is a single bean, just living his best life with his beloved cat.
SINCE WHEN: And this is where we ignore the whole romantic escapade with Jenna D'Sora lol. So, N/A (Or since his date of activation).

Prawn, what's your favourite Data episode (or moment)? My personal favourites are Phantasms, just for the shot of data answering his own phone, and Thine Own Self. x
OOKKKKKKK i started answering this last night and it took me so long bc i have brain problems re: data and i had to go to bed before i could finish it so i saved it as a draft and tumblr deleted it so ok here we go again thine own self fucking slaps, it's like top three data eps for me if not top three tng eps. his little tights. getting his face ripped apart. getting murdered in the town square <3 wow i love that for him!!! datalore/brothers/descent 1/2 OBVIOUSLY bc anytime data and lore are on screen together i'm in a frenzy. noonian being there in brothers is an added bonus. the first 10 minutes of brothers when he's taking over the enterprise is, like... erotic... that sounds insane but it's true. i love it when androids malfunction, it's hot. any episode where data is malfunctioning or being opened up or ripped apart or plugged in to something is like... (chef kiss)
measure of a man (FUCK BRUCE MADDOX).
the offspring :^( clues is an underrated data classique. picard threatening him that he'll be stripped down to his wires? ummmm-
best of both worlds when he's plugged in to locutus? "processing.... processing..." LOVE IT. obsessed with that scene.
fistful of datas. actually any time data and worf get screentime together i'm psyched. especially if worf ends up having to carry him around bc he got his shit wrecked. which reminds me that the iconia episode is great in season 2, whatever it was called. i'm too lazy to look it up. contagion?
i also love any time data and riker get screen time together bc riker is obviously in love with that android. data's day is great, i love just seeing him be a weird little guy. calling geordi lunkhead. ruining o'brien's day. "i am not nervous. i AM confused." uhhhh whatever the episode is where he starts dreaming. birthright. if we're talking about data dreaming episodes, i actually prefer this one to phantasms, even though phantasms also rules. i loooove watching him and julian create a category 5 autism event on the enterprise. also data being like i had a crazy vision, please electrocute me again so i can give it another shot. and even though i hate noonian and want to smash his head with a brick, he is beautiful and i love getting to see him.
hero worship is great. as with the offspring, it's another, "wow data would be a great dad" episode.
love quality of life just in general. it's obvious that picard cares about data like all of his crewmen but they do frequently end up at odds with eachother, so this episode along with measure of a man really stand out to me bc i love seeing picard so enthusiastically being on data's side. he can't even make small talk with data on the turbolift but by god is he ready to die so data can prove some little robots are fellow sentient beings.
the most toys </3
SPEAKING OF TURBOLIFT SMALL TALK, i know starship mine is technically a picard episode but data's parts in it are all great. love that statistically data is either the only guy who can solve a problem or is the guy directly responsible for the problem.
the episode with his mom is sweet even though in my mind it's non-canonical bc i don't believe that noonian soong is capable of um... caring about a fellow human being enough that he could convince someone to marry him (i hate noonian soong. have i mentioned that? actually i hate the entire family except the androids, they're just all terrible people).
uhh and then any episodes that feature data getting his mind hijacked and the entity who does it being like, "this body rules i'm going to beat the shit out of/choke the shit out of picard specifically". thank you... good stuff.
deja q gets 1000000 bonus points bc it is a great q episode AND a great data episode and i wish we got more of them being bfffs.
masks sucks so bad but the, "what does it feel like when one is losing his mind?" scene breaks my heart every time.
also this is not episode specific but data's fascination/love of therapy is awesome i love it i love that he wants to go to therapy every day and i'm glad that (even though picard the tv show sucks) data got his wish of daily therapy sessions with troi in season 3. good for him. GOOD FOR HIM!!!
this post is deranged sorry. this is not even a complete list i am sure i'm missing something. (i know the sherlock data episodes are like fan favorites but i don't... care for them. i'm glad he's having a good time though. sorry :^()

Been watching tng lately, so I was wondering if I could ask which are your favourite Data focused episodes (I hope that phrasing makes sense)? Or, like, at what point did you realise how important he is to you? I'm not sure if this is a strange question to ask, but, like, hi. Hope you have a nice day. (@canarycurse)
HI!! Not weird at all!! Ty im honored to be a source of Data Related Information ahaha!!
I really am a sucker for all the Data related eps but there are def some strange ones so i'll give you some of my favorites!!
(in no particular order of preference)
S2E09 The Measure of a Man
This episode is kind of a heavy one but it is VERY worth it, its really Star Trek at its finest imo, positing the question of whether or not Data is a sentient being and what rights he is entitled to with the Federation. In this episode, Data and his friends fight to defend his rights as a sentient being and prevent Starfleet from allowing another Starfleet scientist, Maddox, from deconstructing Data for 'scientific advancement'. Its a really intense episode but i really do think it displays the best of Star Trek on the whole, not just in this series!
S3E16 The Offspring
this episode is ALSO a VERY heavy one but also VERY much worth it. it will probably make you cry. maybe. I did, anyways. In this episode Data creates an android child, basing their neural net off of his own, but with some changes here and there. The child is allowed to choose their gender and appearance, which i think is a really neat thing considering this was made in like the 80s i think, so pretty progressive actually! Anyways, over the course of the episode, this child, Lal is her name, grows and learns as she explores the world around her. I won't spoil too much but it is a very emotional episode!
S5EP11 Hero Worship
finally! A relatively lighthearted episode! In this episode we find a young human boy whose parents had recently been killed along with the rest of their starship's crewmates. The boy is, understandably, traumatized and upon being rescued by Data, latches onto him. This manifests itself in the boy proclaiming himself "an android" in an attempt to emulate Data but more importantly, cope with the loss of his parents. The episode follows the adventures of Data and this boy as they navigate his recovery together. Its a very sweet episode and i just love it!!
S4E11 Data's Day
This episode is kind of a filler episode i think but enjoyable nonetheless! In this episode, Data helps his friends Keiko and Miles prepare for their wedding! I don't remember the 'important' (by important i mean, like the stuff that everyone else is doing on the starship and stuff lol) plotline but the whole thing revolves around Data doing his best to get ready for his friends' wedding!! Its very sweet!!
S4EP3 Brothers
in this episode Data commandeers the Enterprise in response to a homing device being activated, calling him back to his father/creator, Dr. Noonien Soong. I won't get into this one too much because I think it would spoil it too much but just trust me, this one's good!!
I'll stop here bc while there are other good Data-centric episodes out there that I really enjoy, some of them are objectively Really Fucking Weird (aff) and also if i were to list all the ones i like id just be here forever lol
anyways, hope you find one you enjoy!! Thank you so so much for asking!!! :DD
Stay safe and happy!!

Jean-Luc Picard, Tasha Yar, Data Soong, Beverly Crusher, and Wesley Crusher When you Have a Panic Attack
Requested by anonymous, I hope you’re okay. I’m here if you need to talk or anything!
Jean-Luc Picard:
Tumblr media
He would be a bit surprised by your behavior, but immediately give you a break from your duties. He’d sit you down and try to get you to talk about how you were feeling. Once you told him what you needed, he’d help you through it with a reassuring hand on your shoulder.
Tasha Yar:
Tumblr media
Tasha was no stranger to panic attacks—she knew that little things could build up or bring back bad memories, and she told you so. She held you through the panic attack and rubbed your back soothingly, and encouraged you that you were safe and that you could make it through the panic attack.
Data Soong:

He’d be a bit confused by your actions at first, but as soon as he realized what was happening he’d download a manual on how to help. He’d lead you in a grounding exercise, asking you what you see, hear, smell, and feel to get you more focused on your surroundings. Afterward, he’d check in with Dr. Crusher to make sure he did the right thing and would be prepared in the future.
Beverly Crusher:
Tumblr media
She recognized the signs of a panic attack immediately during one of your checkups. Immediately, she made sure she was acting calmly and told you she knew what was happening. She made sure you knew how to take care of yourself, asked you if you’d like some music on or if you wanted to talk about it. She mainly stayed quiet and let you work through your feelings.
Wesley Crusher:
Tumblr media
He’d be very worried for you and ask you lots of questions to make sure you had everything you needed. He’d give you a hug and sit with you, and he’d reassure you he didn’t think you were weak or silly for having a panic attack. After it was over, he’d talk to you about what caused it and help you figure out ways to prevent them and make sure he knew your triggers.

Q-uick Qcard: STP 2.5
Wellll, here we are in week five of the darling @q-card and I's wholesome little event, and again, I have been fed this week. I have eaten goddamn well, and what do we when presented with good food? We chow the fuck down, darlings. Cross-posted to AO3 heeeere for those of you who prefer it, welcome, dears, to:
You Live in This, and Dwell in Lover's Eyes
He doesn't mean to say it, but it slips unguarded from red lips anyway.
Perhaps it's the fatherly solidarity; perhaps it's because the man resembles Data, and Q will be damned if he can't identify with the sheer self-indulgence of that, but he supposes some approximation of comfort can't be so terrible when he needs the man rather desperately.
"We're all hostages to what we love," he notes, knowing it far too well, a telling streak of maroon flashing across his vision, of the enigmatic and the stolid and the enthralling. "The only way to truly be free is to love nothing. How meaningless would that be?"
Soong's staring at him now, the curiosity of a scientist burning in his gaze.
"May I ask, sir, who I'm doing this for?" He asks softly. "Will this help your child, too?"
Q laughs openly at him. "Trust me, my son does not need help."
"... But it's someone profoundly important to you."
Q closes his eyes for a moment, hums cosmically with memories - space stations, talking a mortal out of omnipotence, showing him the galaxy's greatest threat; stealing his love interest, offering him his own heart back, helping him save his people yet again; the thrill of adventure, the complexity of their words, the joy of belonging and matching... the intense, frantic, beautiful and awful inferno of loving him. A rainbow, pure technicolour, coalescing into the most brilliant, harmonious white, threatening to shatter into the dark at any given moment.
Everything, and nothing without him.
He collides gently with the lab wall that he's apparently stumbled back against, and sighs deeply.
"Your daughter gives you a purpose in the universe," he explains, and it's an agonising truth and simple mirror all at once. "You wake up, you go about your trite mortal life, and you that know you belong, you matter, because of her."
Soong nods, eyes heavy. ".... Your spouse then, I take it?"
A god chokes out an almost mad giggle, drenched in bitterness. Stars, how I wish. He lets the concept sing through him for an infinite, desolate moment - Jean-Luc replaces the wife he cares little for, and they dance through eternity, barely apart, unified in spirit and in purpose, and finally, he has a home, all these billions of years later.
... He should find it alarming that he'd happily tear apart the universe for a lone and glorious idea, but he's a little late on that one, he knows dismally. The timeline's already failing, and here he slumps against a mortal's concrete, wild with panic but calm with absolute determination, and anything but powerless.
Perhaps I don't get to keep him forever, but whilst he's here...
He turns an iced, alien stare to his companion, and hardens to diamond, ensuring the man feels every last drop of the power of the destroyer of worlds.
"My raison d'être." He smiles, and it's the purest ice. "Don't fail me, will you? Because there are far worse fates for your little girl than a lack of vitamin D."
If he takes a perverse joy in the visible shudder that runs through Soong, well... there's no one to judge him. No one else looks so fabulous in the robes, after all.

Program: Scrapbook - Chap. 1: Activation
I choose to believe Dr. Soong DID leave memories for Data on the emotion chip. I see the canon and I politely decline. I’m planning a few more of these chapters, in which Data will watch these memories play out on the holodeck and then have brief commentary after each one. I would apologize for the female OC but, y’know, if the writers had given Data a decent romance arc, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.  Anyway, I’m particularly pleased with my Lore characterizations so I hope other people enjoy pain as much as I do. :)
This is more or less canon compliant, except that at some point, Data reactivated Lore for research purposes...and, of course, the sinlord promptly escaped into the galaxy. For later plot reasons.
Also posted on ao3.
-
“Here. We. Go.” Dr. Soong took a tentative step back to give his new creation some room. Over the last few stages, they had learned that android activation could be at least as traumatic and confusing as human birth. Julianna squeezed his hand gently.
The constructed body on the table opened its eyes and sat up slowly, looking dazed. As the eyes adjusted and learned to blink, the new lifeform jerkily tilted its head one way, then the other, trying to process stimuli.
“Hello,” Juliana ventured. “Do you know who we are?”
The new man fixed his piercing, yellow eyes on the human couple before him, then gazed off into space. Dr. Soong held his breath, wondering if this new one would fail like the earlier prototypes. Then the new android’s head swiveled clumsily to face them again.
“Juliana and Noonian Soong. Mother. Father. I am… Day-tah.”
Dr. Soong clapped his hands in victory. “Very good!”
“Yes!” Juliana laughed. “That’s right.”
As new sensations overwhelmed him – his father’s hands clapping together, his mother’s proud laughter – Data’s head jerked just slightly. He started to wave back and forth, and Dr. Soong put an arm around his new child to stabilize him.
“That’s alright, son. Take a minute. Let everything come to you slowly.” He unconsciously pat the android’s back – a human reaction, a fatherly impulse. “That’s it. Very good.”
Data seemed steady now as he curiously surveyed the room: scientific instruments, computer monitors, plastic dinosaurs, potted plants, light fixtures, doors. His head movements were still jerky and awkward, but he didn’t seem in any danger of falling over.
“Data,” Juliana’s voice startled him again and drew his attention back to the front of the room. She smiled warmly, “Data, there’s someone else you should meet.”
From the open door behind her, a tall figure in black stepped cautiously into the light. He stood stiffly next to Juliana. The man’s expression was good-humored, but unimpressed. “He looks…confused.”
“Data, do you know who this is? Take your time, sweety.” She led the other man gently by the elbow and put his hands out for Data to investigate.
There were several long seconds of silence. Data tilted his head compulsively a few times, searching, cross-referencing, processing. “Lore. Brother.” He answered hesitantly. “Hell-OH, I am a Day-tah.” He shook Lore’s hand brutishly from side to side.
Lore snickered. “Oh, yeah. I like him.” He loomed over his brother and slid his own arm back to his side, stepping back near Juliana. “Uh. Is anyone gonna give the poor kid some clothes?”
“Clothes.” Data repeated. “Clothing. Atire. Garments. Outfit.”
“Come on, little brother. Let’s find you some pants.” Lore shook his head, amused, and took Data’s hand again. He led him down from the table. Looking pleased with himself and focused entirely on Lore’s movements, Data hopped down, tried putting one foot on top of the other… And promptly fell over on his side. He sprawled, naked and perplexed, on the floor of the lab. He stared at his legs, seeming unsure how to correct the issue.
Lore laughed harder and Data helplessly mirrored his brother’s earlier smirk. “Oh dear,” Juliana sighed.
Dr. Soong growled in exasperation. “No, no, no! He’s not ready yet. Lore, help me with him.” Together they lifted Data to his feet and waited for him to stand steady before removing their arms from underneath his. His knees buckled for a moment, but Lore caught his brother before he could slip again. “Alright. Now, slowly. Slowly. One step at a time,” their father commanded.
Juliana went to a cupboard and pulled out a robe. “Here, Data. Can you walk toward me?” She beamed with pride as Lore and Noonian, on either side of Data, released his arms but shadowed his every hesitant step. With each footfall, one, two, three, four, five, Data seemed more confident, until he managed the last leg of the path standing tall and unguided by his family.
“Wonderful, Data!” Juliana wrapped the robe around her son and hugged him, planting a kiss on his cheek. Data looked stunned and turned obediently when Juliana guided him back around to face his father and brother.
Lore looked amused but still unimpressed. “You sure he’s my twin and not another B-4 unit, often wrong?”
Noonian glared at his son and swatted his arm. “Data is performing well beyond established parameters. It took you hours just to adjust the noise level of your voice, problem child. Not to mention your struggles with ocular focus. Juliana had to train you to speak softly and learn to use your eyes. For days, I thought we’d have a blind and screaming android forever. It was like you were possessed.”
“I don’t know,” Lore shrugged as they watched Juliana take Data on a tour of the room. “I guess it’s hard to improve on perfection.” He winked at his father. “I’m speaking of me, of course. Not you.”
“Yeah, I got it. Don’t you have something constructive to be doing, rather than insulting me and your brother?”
“Oh, no. I’ve waited a week for this. Fraternal rivalry and developing my Oedipus complex is about as constructive as I plan to be today.”
Dr. Soong smiled despite his disapproval of Lore’s developing sense of humor. Eventually, Juliana guided Data to a chair. Lore opened his mouth, no doubt to barrage them all with more disparaging remarks, but instead, a disembodied voice announced: “End of simulation.”
-
“Data,” Neva finally released a breath she hadn’t been aware she was holding. She didn’t know what to say. “Data, was that real? I mean, that was really a recording?”
“Yes,” Data replied. “It appears my father kept extensive holo-records. We have just watched the first memory he left for me inside the emotion chip.”
A stranger may have looked at Commander Data and assumed the holodeck memory program had no impact on him, but his friends would know better. Data was blinking more rapidly than normal, staring straight ahead, brow slightly furrowed, as if not quite ready to face his companion. He was also absent-mindedly toying with the device in his hand. Neva had long ago remarked that Data fidgeted when nervous; he had replied that, although he did occasionally make repeated movements when faced with specific stimuli, he was incapable of nervousness as an android. They had debated the issue for a long time, until one day Data relented only that perhaps his programming had developed such a habit to mimic human nerves. Since experimenting with the emotion chip, however, he had haltingly admitted that some level of emotion had already developed on its own, such as the nervous tics.
“Data, this is wonderful.” Neva touched his elbow lightly, to remind him he didn’t have to face any of it alone. “What are you thinking? Feeling?”
He looked at her, reached thankfully for her hand. Their fingers intertwined. He looked older somehow, a little sad. It was a look he wore more and more frequently, Neva had noticed, since using the emotion chip. She could guess it had something to do with reviewing memories of experiences he had lived before developing emotions, now reflecting on them emotionally, and processing the regret. This new development, finally accessing memories of his life that were previously blocked from him, could only compound that pain and confusion.
“I am uncertain.” He admitted finally. “I cannot help but wish Lore had remained here, so I could discuss these memories with him.”
“I think that’s only natural.”
“I also feel…jealous. I am jealous that Lore retained these memories while I…” He trailed off with a frustrated sigh.
“Your father erased them. Are you angry?” She knew Data was still uncomfortable processing emotions he interpreted as negative, or wrong; they conflicted with his self-image and confused his ethical programming.
“Perhaps. But I think I feel more…regret. Sadness. I wish I had more time to ask Dr. Soong questions. I wish Lore were…better than he is. But, perhaps these memories will answer some of my questions.”
Neva smiled. Data was a wonder, even and especially when he thought he was failing. “Do you want me to stay? I can go, if you prefer privacy.”
“I am not sure what these memories will contain, so I do not feel comfortable asking you to stay. But…I do not wish for privacy. I think I would like support.” He tilted his head, almost phrasing it as a question.
“I’m happy to stay. I only asked because… Well, recovering my memories was traumatic. When they came back, I was kind of a mess. I’m glad nobody saw me like that. But you’re…you, so I don’t think you have to worry.” She squeezed his hand and nodded at the device. “Ready when you are.”
He squeezed her hand back and activated the next memory program. The holodeck shifted and changed.

ST: TNG S6 Watchthrough Episodes 14-17
Face of the Enemy: Troi has been kidnapped and forced to look/pose as a Romulan officer. Why? The one responsible isn’t saying, but to say that she’s unhappy would be an understatement. As it turns out, Troi was abducted by a part of the resistance from Unification and they need a Starfleet officer in case their current plan goes south. They even mention Spock… IDK if I can see him approving of an abduction but maybe they just forgot to mention that he disapproved that part… then again I guess it makes logical sense. Eh, whatever. So… this is by far the best Troi episode that they’ve done thus far. She was kidnapped yes, but she is NOT playing the damsel-in-distress. She’s not victimized. She’s not sexualized. She’s not forced into a poorly conceived romance or undergoes anything gross/f*cked up. She has to act the part of a cold-hearted authoritarian among a ship of Romulans and she is freakin’ badass. Especially when she decides that she’s had enough going and thoroughly tells off her kidnapper N’Vek and that he will listen to her. 100% perfection. They even managed to make her empathic abilities useful. Did putting her in the uniform cause this? Did they get it out of their systems in Man of the People? IDK but I am all for it! It was also an awesome look into the Romulans and the going-ons on their ship, something we haven’t really gotten since TOS’ Balance of Terror, and all the Romulans are done very well. N’Vek kidnapped Troi but he did it for his cause and is a great morally grey character, and the female Romulan Commander Toreth is an excellent antagonist. Plus it’s nice to see more of the resistance and to see them within the Romulan ranks. It was an excellent episode and I freakin’ loved it~! Thank you show for giving Troi the badass episode that she deserves (even if it was this late in the show's run), now keep it up! 5/5.
Tapestry: Two Q episodes this season? Hell yes~! So… Picard dies. Welp. Q decides to take this to give Picard an offer: go back in time and undo his greatest regret, the incident that caused his artificial heart that he told Wesley about in Samaritan Snare. Back when he was a hot-blooded rebel who got himself into a fight that got him stabbed in the heart. In doing so, he now has a chance to correct all the wrongs and settle all he regrets in his life since that day. So up to this point, Q’s episodes since Q Who, while still entertaining and interesting, had been more light-hearted. Q still came off as an all-powerful being (Deja Q aside which him not being was the plot point), but his antics had been more comedic or light-hearted in comparison. In this episode, he’s acting like a trickster as per usual, but again more with the purpose to teach Picard a lesson. Why isn’t made very clear aside from maybe he just likes Picard (take that however way you’d like), but it’s nice to see this version of Q again while still utterly stealing the show. Picard got to undo the event… but would it have really turned out any better had it not happened? Would not making mistakes, having regrets, and making all the supposed ‘right’ choices when he should have had truly made a better impact in his present? That’s the funny thing about life, it’s easy to look back and go ‘if I had done this one thing differently, it would have been better’ and te desire to correct it is very powerful. But with mistakes comes the ability to learn. To grow. To mature. You’ll always have guilt and regrets, but you have to accept that this is what you chose and go about your life. Picard is a man full of thrown-away opportunities, pain, and so much more… but it also caused him to become a strong leader, intelligent, a risk-taker, and even with all his faults become a better person in his present day. Now obviously he doesn’t actually die, but he sure as Hell learned the lesson. The life he would have lead would have been unsatisfying, his old regrets replaced with new ones, and been unfulfilling for a man like himself. Now he can truly value the one that he has and the people in it. This was a fantastic episode. It’s crazy how Picard went from one of my least favorites to now one of my absolute favorites. His development and growth from a strict, aloof authoritarian to a much more reasonable father-like figure and much more humbled man and the captain has been excellent, and this episode just helps further that. The only real complaint is there’s not much time devoted to showing how his crew ended up without him, but that’s minor and doesn’t take anything away at all. Very well done~! 5/5.
Birthright: Okay, guess we got a second two-parter… and apparently it crosses over with DS9. Didn’t see that coming. But alrighty, I’m game~!
Part One: So the crew is on Deep Space 9 to assist in repairs of some incident involving the Bajorans and the Cardassians that I guess I’ll find out about when I get to the show. While there Worf is approached by an alien who informs him that his dead father? He may not be dead after all, having been kept in a Romulan prison. Worf doesn’t take it well. He ain’t the only one having daddy issues. While working with DS9‘s CMO Dr. Bashir, Data gets knocked out has a vision of Dr. Soong (a much younger one than in Brothers). Normally Data can’t dream so he’s pretty taken aback by this. So as a first part, this was pretty good. It sets up Worf’s plot well with him deciding to break into the Romulan camp to find out the truth and rescue the Klingons there. Data’s plot is overall nice. He’s never dreamed before so him trying to track down why is very understandable, especiallya after Picard suggests that he quit going through facts and try a more creative outlet to get his answers. So what happened? As it turns out Dr. Soong made it so that when Data reached a certain cognitive point, he would obtaint he ability to dream and he made an AI version of himself to talk to him. I guess he would have explained this to him in Brothers had Lore not shown up/had he not died. It was a really touching moment. Soong’s still not exactly the most ideal parent, but his AI copy seemed legit proud of how far Data’s come. Is it out of ego, legit parental pride, or both? That’s up for you to decide. As this is my first look at Bashir… so far I don’t have too manys torng opinions. he seems to act more liek a Science Officer or Engineer han a CMO, but he is cute and so far liekabe. He’s curious about Data, but doesn’t dehumanize him like Maddox in The Measure of a Man did, if anything he notes Data’s more human-like elements like being able to grow hair than any of the nuts and bolts. He seems pretty well liked from what I’ve seen int he fandom, so I’ll see how that holds when I reach DS9 but I like him so far. I do have some issues, but that more impacts the Overall so I’ll save it for there. So we end with Worf discovering his father’s true fate… and he’s informed by the Klingons there that he’s never leaving the camp. Welp. How will Worf get out of this one in Part 2? We shall see. 4/5.
Part Two: So what the heck is going on? Well, Worf’s father is infact dead, but there were captured Klingons. As they weren’t able to die with honor nor could they return home as it would dishonor their families (Klingons prefer death to capture), they chose to remain in the camp and live out the rest of their lives there. So now Worf is among multiple Klingons, the vast majority of which know nothing about their heritage, culture, and customs and had it outright demonized. To them, the lives they have are the norm and they have no desire to change it. Worf may have been out of touch with Klingons due to being raised on Earth, but at least he can explore it and get in touch with it. The ones in the camp? They can’t do that. They’re essentially in a gilded cage. Yeah, there's the argument that they achieved peace between Klingons and Romulans… by imprisoning said Klingons and demonizing their culture to them with the older Klingons allowing it. Though it seems it’s also because of broken spirits and the dishonor they’d have faced otherwise which is worst than death to them. There’s even one girl, Ba’el, who is half Klingon, half-Romulan… and despite what gets said I don’t get the sense that her parents' union was a fully consensual one. This was pretty good. Worf has found a group that like him were out of touch with their heritage, and he is now able to educate them and guide them. With all that’s happened and his struggle to be a true Klingon and find his way, this was really nice to have. He’s still clinging onto his hatred of Romulans and this episode isn’t going to help it dissipate, but at least it was addressed and Ba’el being upset at being judged due to how she was born was very much justified. Heaven knows that the themes here are still very much relevant in today’s time. Worf’s guidance pays off in the end and at last, they can be free. The younger Klingons have a rough road likely ahead of them since we know that Klingon society isn’t exactly the easiest to get through, but at least they have a chance at freedom. It was a very strong Worf episode and it was great to see~. 4/5.
Overall: Okay, so overall… it’s pretty uneasy. The Worf parts are good.. As I said, it was nice to see him in a position to give guidance to a group even more out of touch than he is. It was very wel done. The issues are mainly with Part One. We have this plot where they go to DS9… and we are barely there. We have Dr. Bashir… and only him. None of the other characters. We don't even see O’Brien despite him having transferred to DS9 at this point. Maybe the actors were busy sot they could only pick one but it kinda makes doing a crossover cheap. Bashir doesn’t even get a lot to do, you could write him out and very little would change. On the upside this means that viewers who haven’t watched DS9 won’t be confused nor would DS9 be required viewing, but it also kind of defeats the purpose of bringing DS9 in. It’s essentially just window dressing. Data’s plot, while nice, is completely dropped in Part Two. It feels like they were required to do a two-parter, didn’t have enough of the Worf plot to fill it out, and came up with the Data dream plot and using DS9 to fill it out. The crew also don’t really do anything in either part. As such, aside from getting Worf into the place he needs to be, Part One feels irrelevant. As such, I can’t give it a perfect rating. It was still good, but as a two-parter Part One bogs it down, but still allows for Part Two to happen. Overall, pretty good. 4/5.

Tumblr media
Utterly mystified by the individual’s inexplicable appearance on the holodeck, Data could only stare at him. Starfleet regulation dictated he had to apprehend the infiltrator and apprise the Captain, but his subroutines were not humming with vigilance, just mild amusement interlinked with excessive discombobulation. The stranger possessed of an intellect not that dissimilar to his own; eager to obtain information, inquisitive, and an intrinsic desire to investigate that what he could not fathom.
Nonetheless, a certain level of wariness was evoked when the zealous man started to bounce around and addressed his components by name. Was he a cyberneticist of sorts? Could he be an associate or contemporary of Dr Noonian Soong? Possibly, but unlikely. Either way, it was heightening his sense of suspicion. His yellow eyes remained trained on the exuberant individual, determined to ascertain what purpose he was pursuing. He had, after all, clandestinely embarked the Enterprise while they were traversing across the galaxy at warp 6.8. How had he even managed to board the vessel? Queries for later, or whenever he could interpolate them into the sparse intermissions the stranger applied to his one-sided conversation.
Data’s subroutines droned with the profuse information spewed into his direction. His advanced computational capabilities digested the information assiduously, paying close attention to every detail, whether he could comprehend them on a cognitive level or not. The stranger had many questions, and formulated several tempting propositions, but the android could not comply unless he had garnered sufficient information regarding the other man’s intentions, other than reenacting a medley of detective novels on the holodeck.
‘Perhaps,’ Data replied placidly, not intending to indulge the other in his wishes until he could verify his identity and determine whether he was friend or foe. ‘You are well-informed about who and what I am, sir. You have accurately extrapolated my interests by violating my private recreational time on the holodeck, and I would gladly grant you my concession; your actions have not yet contradicted my initial profile of you as “benign,” but I do require additional information if you would prefer I proceed to regard you this way.’
His approach was pragmatic, and expressed with the immaculate coolness of a machine unfazed by the peculiarity that permeated in this infrequent occurrence.
‘Would you please be so kind as to identify yourself and state your business aboard the Enterprise? As one of the senior officers, I am usually notified when we are accommodating new guests, but I was not briefed on the arrival of a visitor of your stature. Furthermore, the circumstances do not lend themselves for admitting passengers to our ship; we are currently travelling at warp speed. Transportation should be unavailable at the present time. If you are not a visitor, but have boarded the ship without prior authorisation and utilised a different means of transportation, I am obligated to apprise my superiors of this anomaly. And once they are satisfied with the nature of your intentions, we could devise the holoprogram you are so eager to explore.’

Logan likes Data- Shallow reading or cry for help?
So Logan likes scifi, Star Trek and the like.
In the Q & A video, he said that he preferred Data to Spock because Data was an Soong Type Android and thus had no messy emotions like the Half-Human Spock.
This has always bothered me, because Data wants emotions, and his personal character arcs generally included him learning to understand humans and human emotion and actions, where as Spock has emotions, very intense ones as all Vulcans do, which is what leads to their careful, reserved actions, and seeming lack of emotions.  While Spock accepting how much he cared for his husband crew-mates was important, it was accepted that he would continue express himself in that measured reserved fashion. Like Logan does, locking everything down, only occasional extreme emotions breaking through.
So, what does this mean? It could be a shallow reading by someone who only peripherally likes Star Trek, Logan likes to deny his emotions, Data doesn’t have any (until he installs the emotions chip, which while a trial for him was on purpose) so a robot without them would be preferred. It could also be a dodge from the easy answer of ‘Spock loves Logic, Logic therefore loves Spock’
Logan is enough of a Trekkie to know the type of android Data is. He has to know that Data constantly seeks emotional understanding, to increase his ‘emotional’ range.  By identifying with Data who wants to understand emotions, instead of Spock, who represses and controls them, Logan might be stating that he wants to be in control and understanding of his emotions, not just lock them down. Putting it out there in the hopes that people can help him find and ‘install’ said emotions.
in this essay I sorta....
