COMING SOON TO A LESBIAN HEADCANON NEAR YOU!!!
So because I am capable of being Completely Normal about Red Dwarf, I challenged myself to draw every character from this show and also an evil version of every character! (Or, you know, several dozen evil versions. I am a simple gay. I saw Low!Rimmer and my little brain fully fucking broke.)
Anyway, long story short, what if holovirus but less penguin puppets and more lesbians?? Everything about that sentence is gold. And so I am waiting on my call from the BBC now to beg me to write for this show. I shall graciously accept their offer when the time comes.
--
[ID: a digital illustration in the style of a horror movie poster, in shades of blue. In the foreground, Deb Lister from the TV show red dwarf is holding a flashlight in the dark and looking confused / concerned. She is in a rusty metal Corridor full of pipes.
In the background, at the end of the corridor in a misshapen doorway, Arlene Rimmer is standing in a wide aggressive stance and glaring at the unsuspecting Deb. Arlene is glowing with a green blue light and her eyes are fully white and Shining, giving off a bright glow.
Title text in blue reads: "The Girls from the Dwarf in:"
Under that, title text in holographic blues reads: "HOLOVIRUS II: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO"
Finally, in the upper left-hand corner of the image there is small translucent text reading: "Jack D. Goodfellow"
END ID]

guys we need people to start drawing the Hatchetfield characters with incredibly cartoonish proportions to really indicate their personality. I WANNA SEE ART OF:
Solomon Lauter a twig of a man with a demonic vibe to him
Frank Pricely being a somewhat stout, dwarvish man with giant ass glasses
Sam Sweetly having a permanent smile and the glasses literally just being his eyes
Boy Jeri and Girl Jeri having thin statures yet Jeri having a heart shaped face and giant doe eyes
Paul being a crumbling mess with eyes that look they they could flood the world with their tears
Ziggy having the proportions of a Picasso drawing
Deb’s face being hidden by her beanie
Gary Goldstein being geometric AS FUCK.
ALL OF THE LORDS IN BLACK BEING SHAPES I SWEAR. Wiggly the malformed circle, Blinky the diamond, Tinky the b o x, Pokey the triangle, and Nibbly the oval(s)

does ichiya ever third wheel warabi and Ikkan or are all of them just kinda homies when they group up
(((ART NOT RELATED)))
No actually, Ichiya doesn't hang out around Warabi IF YOU GUY WANNA KNOW WHY,HIT SUBSCRIPBE AND TURN ON YOUR NOTIFICATIONS!!!! although he was the third wheel during early stages of SquidSquad, LET ME EXPLAIN:
Tumblr media
At the beginning it was just him and Ikkan, two dudes with some shady past that moved to Haikara to pay some personal deb and finally persue a new dream, doing their best to pay rent and playing their shit at local studios. But it wasn't enough for the band to pop. However Ikkan got their ass saved once again, (again,again,again,again....)bSo he presented the next keyplayer: Namida, an ikkan's friend... Namida was fine, she's wierd, but weird in the good weird, the same vibes as sqsq hits, He and Namida clicked and became tiny Bro and big Sis . BUT for ikkan, they already knew each other and well and fpr that time they were dating . Ikkan in love mostly feels like a barnacle, doesn't exactly get stuck at you all the time, It's more like unlock him a new passion: NAMIDA!, so anything he does its related to you. (I have a Tumblr post explain all this)
Tumblr media
So, well, Ichiya didn't care much at least, just making sure Namida doesn't treat him as weirdo and having an eye over him. It ain't the first time that Ikkah give eeeverything he has on a relationship thats doomed to fail.

Now this follows the story of the starkid musical “the guy who didn’t like musicals” but with tadc characters as well the characters, also while I know it’s the first part of the Hatchet field series in this au only tgwdlm is a part of it since tbh I haven’t watched the others, the story is mostly the same besides for a few small changes to make sense anyways here’s the list of characters.
In this au Pomni is in Paul’s role not much changes
Ragatha is in Emma’s role once again not much changes
Jax is Ted because let’s be honest he just is
Professor Hidgens is Kafmo don’t have to worry bout changing what we don’t know
Mr. Ken Davidson is Caine
Alice is Gange
Zooble is Deb
Sam is Queenie
Which leaves Charlotte and Bill who I combined into one role and that Kinger has, so a few things change (he still dies when Charlotte does so the rescue mission for Gangle only Pomni goes to)

With six books out this week, we've got a little something for everyone! Which of these are on your TBR list?
In Limbo: A Graphic Memoir by Deb JJ Lee First Second
Deborah (Jung-Jin) Lee knows she's different. Ever since her family emigrated from South Korea to the United States, she's felt her Otherness. For a while, her English isn't perfect. None of her teachers can pronounce her Korean name. Her face and her eyes—especially her eyes—stand out. As the pressures of high school ramp up, friendships change and end, and everything gets harder. Even home isn't a safe place, as fights with her mom escalate. Deb is caught in a limbo, with nowhere to go, and her mental health plummets.
But Deb is resilient. She discovers art and self-care, and gradually begins to start recovering. And during a return trip to South Korea, she realizes something that changes her perspective on her family, her heritage, and herself.
This stunning debut graphic memoir features page after page of gorgeous, evocative art, perfect for Tillie Walden fans. It's a cross section of the Korean-American diaspora and mental health, a moving and powerful read in the vein of Hey, Kiddo and The Best We Could Do. -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads

London, 1885. Whispers about the true nature of Gabriel and Henry's relationship have followed the boys for two years, and now Gabriel has a chance to start again.
But Gabriel doesn't want to move on, not without Henry. His friend has become distant and cold since the disastrous events of the prior spring, and now his letters have stopped altogether. Desperate to discover what's become of him, Gabriel takes to watching the Jekyll house.
In doing so, Gabriel meets Hyde, a a strangely familiar young man with white hair and a magnetic charisma. He claims to be friends with Henry, and Gabriel can't help but begin to grow jealous at their apparent closeness, especially as Henry continues to act like Gabriel means nothing to him.
But the secret behind Henry's apathy is only the first part of a deeper mystery that has begun to coalesce. Monsters of all kinds prowl within the London fog—and not all of them are out for blood... -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads
Chloe and the Kaishao Boys by Mae Coyiuto Putnam
Chloe is officially off the waitlist at USC, and thus one step closer to realizing her dream of becoming an animator in the United States. But before she leaves home, her auntie insists on planning a traditional debut for Chloe’s eighteenth birthday (think sweet sixteen meets debutante ball). To make matters worse, her father, intent on finding Chloe the perfect escort for the party, keeps setting her up on one awkward kaishao—or arranged date—after another. But . . . why does her dad suddenly care so much about her love life? And what happens when she actually starts to fall for one of the guys, only to have to leave at the end of the summer? -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads
There Goes the Neighborhood by Jade Adia Disney-Hyperion
Fifteen-year-old Rhea and her best friends, Zeke and Malachi, are South L.A. born and raised, but a recent wave of gentrification has been transforming the place that they call home. When an eviction notice from a greedy landlord threatens to split up the crew, Rhea and her friends manipulate social media to form a fake gang in hopes of scaring off developers. Their scheme appears to work at first… until a murder is pegged on the nonexistent gang. Yikes.
THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD is a love letter to communities of color everywhere, a middle finger to the destructive powers of gentrification, and a hilarious adventure about three teens who have the best intentions, if not always the best solutions. Perfect for fans of Tiffany Jackson's Let Me Hear a Rhyme and Netflix's On My Block, this is an uproarious novel about power, friendship, and what really makes a neighborhood. -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads

[This post is a reprint of an interview with NaRae Lee conducted at San Diego Comic Con 2009, by Deb Aoki for about.com. I have removed web links so that this post will hopefully appear in tags -- please click the source link if you want to click and see, like, archived versions of Yen Press's website.]
Interview: NaRae Lee
Manhwa artist for James Patterson's Maximum Ride
By Deb Aoki, About.com
To celebrate the first birthday of Yen Plus magazine, Yen Press invited Korean comics artist NaRae Lee as their special guest at San Diego Comic-Con 2009. Lee is the artist behind the graphic novel adaptation of James Patterson's bestselling Maximum Ride novels for young adults that is currently being serialized monthly in the pages of Yen Plus.
Discovered by Yen Press Senior Editor JuYoun Lee, NaRae was able to make her U.S. debut working on a series that already had legions of devoted fans. It's a lot to live up to, but NaRae proved to be up to the challenge by delivering artwork that looks remarkably polished for a relative newbie to the world of international manga publishing.
This visit to San Diego was NaRae's first visit to the United States, and unfortunately, the trip from Korea to Southern California wasn't an easy one for her. The effects of jet-lag took their toll on the petite yet hard-working artist, which forced Yen Press to cancel her first planned autograph session on Friday afternoon. NaRae did manage to make it to the convention center to meet her fans on Saturday afternoon, which is when I caught up with her to ask a few questions.
NaRae tends to draw herself as a pudgy, chibi character in her artist's notes in Yen Plus, but in reality, she's a slender, shy and soft-spoken young woman who seemed somewhat surprised to see the line of fans who came to meet her and get her autograph. Yen Press Senior Editor JuYoun Lee kindly translated our conversation.
Q: Welcome to San Diego Comic-Con. It's great to have you here.
NaRae Lee: I'm happy to be here too.
Q: Did you see anything in the Exhibit Hall that you thought was really exciting and cool?
NaRae Lee: I've been sick (since I got to San Diego from Korea), so this is actually the first time that I've been to the convention center.
Q: Ah, too bad. I hope you get to see more of it over the next two days. When you got the call to do Maximum Ride, had you heard of the books before?
NaRae Lee: I didn’t know about them at first.
Q: What were your impressions when you read the script? Did anything strike you in particular that made you think, 'Wow, I should work on this project?'
NaRae Lee: I liked the characters a lot. They each had their own distinctive characteristics and personalities, so that was the big appeal for me.
Q: Which is your favorite character to draw?
NaRae Lee: Character-wise, my favorite is Iggy, but when I'm drawing I enjoy drawing Max the most.
Q: Why is that?
NaRae Lee: The way I'm drawing the character is like a lot of my taste, so I likes how the eyes and the clothes she wears came out. I'm enjoying drawing her very much.
Q: I was really impressed when I first saw your art for Maximum Ride. It's very accomplished, very professional-looking, and it reads very nicely. Is this your first long series?
NaRae Lee: Thank you. Yes, it's my first major series.
Q: Has it been an adjustment creating a new chapter on a monthly schedule?
NaRae Lee: It’s been tough.
Q: Do you have time to do other things, like draw your own manga stories?
NaRae Lee: I also have my own story, a manga that is currently being published in a Korean anthology. That also has a monthly deadline. That one is fortunately only eight pages a month, but still, because I'm juggling the two deadlines I've been having a tough time.
Q: What is the title and what is it about?
NaRae Lee: It’s called Sweetie Milky Propose and it’s for younger girls. It’s like a comedy, also has a bit of a romance going on. It's about four fairies from Milkland coming into the human world to find their princess, who doesn’t know she is a princess. It's very funny.
Q: That sounds cute -- I hope to see it some time! So how did you and JuYoun (Lee, Senior Editor of Yen Press) find each other?
NaRae Lee: (turns to JuYoun) You would know better about that!
JuYoun Lee:Well, there is like an anthology that her school puts out. I saw her like short story there and I immediately liked her art style. I thought she would be perfect for Maximum Ride, so I contacted her.
Q: Ah wow, so straight from college. So how long have you been drawing manga?
NaRae Lee: I've been drawing since I was in like fourth or fifth grade in elementary school. I also went to an animation high school, not just college, so I've been drawing for a long time.
Q: So what is the curriculum like at an animation university? Is it like mostly animation classes or is it like animation and regular school subjects?
NaRae Lee: Well, the college I go to is a manga college and my high school specialized in animation. You can also major in manga at the animation high school as well.
Q: So now that you've devoted so much of your life to drawing, what do you think is your greatest strength as an artist and what is the hardest thing for you to do?
NaRae Lee: I can’t really pinpoint my strong point because I think I'm still a newbie. So maybe the fact that I have lots of possibilities in front of me might be my strongest point.
The toughest thing that I have to deal with as I draw Maximum Ride is that the story is set in the States and this is literally my first chance I've had to visit North America. Because I'm based in Korea, it's tough to find all the reference photos and trying to imagine like (the various locations described in the script) is going to look like. This has been the hardest thing.
Q: Have you met Mr. Patterson? Have you talked with him?
NaRae Lee: (shakes her head) Ah, no. Not yet.
Q: Ah, too bad. Maybe sometime on your next visit to the U.S. Okay, so I know your fans who are for your autograph session are eager to talk to you, but do you have a special message for the fans who couldn’t join you here today?
NaRae Lee: Thank you very much for reading the books.

You know I'm in awe of your analysis and insight into OTH characters! If you ever want to, I'd love to hear how you feel Julian and Lucas are both similar and different. I have a friend who claims Brooke definitely has a 'type' since Julian and Lucas are both more introverted and cerebral, but it's hard for me to either agree or disagree since Julian's personality seems to change every season (maybe even every few episodes?!) so I'd love to get your take!
You are way, way too nice to me. But this is really sweet 💙
Um.. I think I see what you mean. There's early Julian, there's late season 6/season 7 Julian, and then there's the Julian of the final two seasons. Whereas Lucas has more of a consistent, albeit frustrating, arc, Julian simply changed personalities based on the whims of the writers and possibly whatever suited Austin Nichols' talents. I guess Lucas and Julian are mostly similar in that they make art and really want it to have an effect on people. Both men are romantics, but I don't think Julian needs romance the way Lucas does. He ultimately wants/wanted a family and to get married, but he was fine waiting for the timing to be just right and for the perfect woman to come into his life. On the other hand, Lucas tried to force it, wanting to settle down so badly that he repeatedly proposed even though the timing was all wrong. Lucas's bride didn't necessarily have to be the one. She just needed to say "yes". Both Lucas and Julian have complicated relationships with their parents. But in my opinion, Julian's dynamic with Paul and Sylvia is much closer to Nathan's with Dan and Deb (hard to please dad & alcoholic mom) than Lucas's. Both Lucas and Julian seemed to be considered nerds prior to their "glow ups" (Lucas joining the Ravens, Julian becoming an adult and entering the entertainment industry). They both find it easy to be just friends with girls. However, Lucas is much more of a guys' guy, having a whole friend group of men compared to Julian really struggling to bond with Nathan and Clay. Like pretty much every OTH character, Lucas and Julian are protective and defensive over their loved ones, having zero problem directly confronting the person hurting them. Lucas resorts to violence much more often than Julian, though. He's far more impulsive. It helps that, again, we only knew Julian as an adult whereas we saw Lucas the teenager for four seasons. Not that growing up meant Lucas matured.
This is probably a disappointing answer, so I'm sorry. Julian is much more difficult to pin down for me than Lucas. I tried to work with traits I saw in Julian throughout seasons 6-9, but you're correct that the characterization is so off it's hard to discuss. For instance, Julian starts off very cocky or at least has the persona of a very confident person. This was never Lucas, even at his worst. Lucas's defense mechanism is growing stoic, sometimes hitting below the belt to make whoever has hurt him feel as badly as he does. And I don't think that's Julian? I think Julian also has a tendency to express his love by using his money. Julian, like Nathan and Brooke, grew up with rich parents. He was able to secure his job through nepotism. Lucas came from a working class home with his biological father not contributing financially. Keith was able to pay for Lucas's college fund, but all of Lucas's successes were his own. The class differences between Lucas and Julian are represented very well in the engagement rings they give their wives. Julian gives Brooke a diamond ring with a large diamond. Lucas gives both Lindsey and Peyton the engagement ring Keith once gave to Karen, a ring with a modestly sized diamond, something more sentimental rather than extravagant. And while both men are known for their intelligence, Lucas is much more athletic than Julian.
Again, I'm sorry. I probably could have done a better job coming up with similarities and differences, but this is just off the top of my head.

uno reverse! do you have any favorite fun facts/infodumps you would like to share? :D
Hoo boy, an open invitation to ramble about something that gets my brain excited? I hope you won't regret this. (Also, thank you, Milk :>)
Today we're going to be talking about Deb Cook!!!
Deborah Cook, as she is usually credited in films, is the head of LAIKA's costume department. She has worked on every LAIKA film that has been made, from Coraline (2009) to the upcoming Wildwood (2025).
The thing about stop-motion animation is that there is a massive amount of planning that needs to be worked out before the actual filming process even starts. Part of this is the costume designs for all the puppets, so that they fit into the world and can be used as vessels for a cohesive story.
Cook does a lot of research into historical elements that can be used in costumes, as well as using computers and collaborating with other people in the art department to create her own version of textiles that are perfect for the character. She takes her job very seriously, and works to consider what each character's personality is so she can create a fitting look for them.
But, the!! The thing is, these puppets are generally about eight to twelve inches tall!! So you can't just go to a craft store and buy any old fabric, because the weave might be too rough, or when a camera is focussed on a piece of clothing so small the colors are distorted. So there is a necessary level of detail that must be adhered to, otherwise the final product will be kind of disastrous. You can't just make tiny jeans out of regular denim, you have to find a fabric that looks like denim, but is light enough that it'll be flexible when placed on a tiny puppet.
Now, there are a lot of insanely talented people who create all sorts of miniatures and have come up with ingenious solutions to this that can be pointed out. HOWEVER, a great deal of these are because of how much work LAIKA has put into that field of art in the last seventeen years.
In Coraline, some of the costumes were made out of a child's sock. A sock. And it worked because Deb Cook is a fantastic and dedicated artist who works really hard to do her best in literally everything. But, now that LAIKA has had over a decade of experience and accolades and new highly clever artists joining them, they have come up with many new ways to use technology to help.
But Deb Cook is an artist and she will go out of her way to make something look as authentic as possible. For the iconic beetle crest on Kubo's clothing in Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), she dyed rice paste, painted the fabric, and then carefully washed it off to leave the image.
So, after all of that, and the meticulous attention given to every thread, you must remember that they have to animate all this. That means rigging in skirts and weighted sleeves and armature in capes. Each and every piece of clothing, in addition to needing to be replicated or else durable enough to be used for the two or so years required to make a stop-motion film, must be controlled down to the tiniest motion. In addition, the costume department she manages has to be able to make repairs or tiny alterations when something is damaged or an animator needs to get at the inner workings of a puppet.
There are so many more things that need to be considered in stop-motion versus live action, since the majority of the materials and designs are made from scratch in the studio.
And yet, despite all this, the woman hasn't won any awards
SO. That was my insane, unpolished rant about how much I love Deb Cook. Sorry and/or thank you if you made it this far, and if you want to learn more here are some resources:

Ever since I was in middle school I have been OBSESSED with tracy j. butler's work, she does the webcomic lackadaisy cats and everything she draws is just masterful. Her fully polished paintings are beautiful but I'm choosing to show some of her pencil sketches here because... well... just look at them. like holy shit. I think you could probably trace my love of drawing more stylized proportions with a disproportionate amount of detail on the clothing to her stuff. she also just does magnificent character work and i have a print of her expression tutorial that i kept hanging right by my bed to look at for years.
i was also, as you all know, incredibly incredibly deep into homestuck fandom for the majority of my Learning to Draw years so there were a few artists who were big during peak homestuck posting era that were very formative for me.
Tumblr media
in particular i was really into @xamag-homestuck's stuff because i just found the way she stylized characters super pleasing. i spent a bunch of time trying to emulate that.
there was also someone who went by putoshop, i don't know what their current socials are if any but the old blog's gone, and i can specifically site their art as being the thing that got me to start trying lineless stuff
Tumblr media
i also have loved loved loved everything @ggdgart has ever done and in particular their use of color in cucumber quest imprinted on me a ton and is something i have drawn a lot of inspiration from over the years. on top of that they have a wonderful sense of fashion and their character designs are just great. cucumber quest rules.
Tumblr media
i also was a kid who was really into western cartoons and didn't start watching anime with any regularity until i was in college so a lot of those meant a lot to me. a lot of my early drawing was done trying to copy/trace avatar the last airbender screenshots and while i think it definitely got me started i honestly feel like it had less of a long-lasting impact on the way my art looks than other stuff that i didn't even watch a ton of. i was never super deep into either show as media but i always absolutely loved the aesthetics happening in samurai jack and my life as a teenage robot. they both had that excellent geometric midcentury vibe. more recently in comparison to those two, i also feel in love with the background style in gravity falls and would say that was pretty influential.
right now as for present inspiration i'm absolutely obsessed with everything that deb jj lee does because, well. once again i find really the only adequate thing to say is 'holy shit'
Tumblr media
their stuff rules soooooooo hard
i'm also extremely in love with angela sung's art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the textures! the colors! the shapes! no misses here
im sure theres more stuff i could bring up but this is what's coming to me at the time so ill leave it here

So, you said qaf is full of symbolism can you make some examples with some of your favourite imagery? Thank you!
Honestly I could do an episode by episode breakdown but ain't nobody got time for that (and no one would read it lol).
Scarf/Art as Life
Tumblr media
One of the best ones that I noticed as I went through for the first time was the blood-stained scarf as Brian's life, which is tied to Justin, and also Justin's art, which is symbolic of his own life. I already wrote about those in depth here. But I do recall watching the episode and as soon as the scarf appeared, I noted that it was a symbol for Brian's life; when it ended up bloodstained, this was even more reinforced. And then, when it reappeared in the second season, I was genuinely shocked--it should have, but that is a detail that could easily have been neglected since symbolism is a lost art these days. Instead it's given its final focus after Justin and Brian make love for the first time since the incident. The art symbolism continues into the series' finale.
Sunshine
Tumblr media
Justin is nicknamed "Sunshine" by Debbie and "sonny boy" by Brian, with of course the double meaning since "sonny" is pronounced the same as "sunny" in English. But the idea of Justin as a light appears numerous times in the story: he first meets Brian under a streetlight, and realizes that he wants to be back with Brian post break-up while again sticking his head under a lamp.
Tumblr media
The Race
I've also written in-depth several times now about the race symbolism at the end of season 4. I love it. Also, I love how it calls back to Justin working so hard to get out of the hospital to see Brian in season 2... but Brian was always there.
Peter Pan
I've also mentioned how Michael's name is probably an allusion to Peter Pan, since Lindsay constantly calls Brian "Peter" starting from episode 1, and Brian calls Lindsay "Wendy." Of course, Peter Pan syndrome is at the core of Brian's character arc: he's gotta grow up. But it's also reinforced through other ways--for example, Brian's bratty nephews are actually named John and Peter, two other Peter Pan characters.
"Have Some Balls"
Tumblr media
Minor thing, but during the confrontation where Justin shows Brian he wants to get back together, Brian tells him:
Oh, that is so like you! You don’t hear what you want, so you leave. Try standing up for yourself for a change? Have some balls!
Followed, of course, by a kiss. But that's season 3. Season 4 reuses this phrase by making "Have Some Balls" the literal title of the episode where Justin shows up and tells Brian off for hiding the fact that he had cancer and tells Brian to deal with him being taken care of for once. Standing up for yourself sometimes looks like accepting you need to ask for help (another theme throughout multiple seasons).
Home
Home is a motif really more so than just a symbol, but it's one of two major motifs introduced in episode one of the first season that then continues throughout all five seasons. When Brian's son is born, he tries to kick Justin out so that he can go see Gus, but Justin says "I can't go home." Because he has nowhere to go, Brian allows Justin to stay with him. Justin then quite literally ends up homeless, with Brian unwilling to commit but also not willing to throw him onto the street. But Brian in the end helps Justin find a temporary home with Deb.
In season 2, Brian tells Justin that he wants to "come home to" him every night. In season 4, Brian firstly kicks Justin out of their home because he thinks Justin will split now that he's got cancer, and then makes the big step of asking Justin to move back in, and Justin does in season 5, but it doesn't last. Why? Well, in season 5, Michael and Brian have this dialogue about Michael's suburban life with Ben:
Michael : It’s a home!
Brian: It’s a farce! It’s a freak show!
The point is that Brian mistakes a home here for a suburban life, instead of remembering where home has always been for him. Home being another person. He's Justin's home, and Justin is Brian's. When Brian finally decides to commit, he goes and... buys a home to symbolize it. But in the end, Justin doesn't want the home. He wants Brian, flaws and all.
Religion/God
I'm absolutely going to fumble this explanation because there is a lot of nuance and deeper dives needed into the nature of humanism and empathy and existentialism on the show to fully make this one clear. I just don't have time for that now, so have a messy ramble.
The second motif that's introduced in season one, episode one. For starters, Brian and Justin meet outside Babylon, a rather Biblical name. Yeah, yeah, you can associate with promiscuity and I don't doubt that's why the club is named that, but in terms of symbolism, Babylon is in the bible a place of exile, of wandering, of lamenting for... you guessed it, home. So. It's rather fitting Brian meets Justin outside of it, even if it's not intentional (it might be, though).
But anyways. The motif is then brought up when Justin tells Daphne "I just met the face of God. His name is Brian Kinney." Michael and Emmett also compare Brian to a god at various points--Michael in season 1, Emmett in season 3.
Ted later tells Emmett and Michael that:
I think God appreciates it even more. Because he created you in his image. At least that's what I was always taught. And since God is love and God doesn't make mistakes, then you must be exactly the way he wants you to be. And that goes for every person, every planet, every mountain, every grain of sand, every song, every tear... and every f****t. We're all his, Emmett. He loves us all.
The idea of "God is love" is how the show defines God, regardless of faith (though it does rely more on Christian symbolism unsurprisingly because America's literary zeitgeist is saturated with ideas of sacrifice and resurrection; to its credit, QaF largely rejects the former (but not always) and celebrates the latter). Lots of people use religion to hurt our characters (and frankly, in real life, lots of people use religion to hurt queer people). But love is something all these characters have for each other, and so there's an element of the divine in these relationships, of always finding their way back to one another, of things like forgiveness and grace and rebirth and resurrection (something Justin, Michael, and Brian all explicitly go through, with Justin and Michael's respective near death experiences and Brian's dream of himself in a casket right after he tells Justin he loves him for the first time. This symbolizes Brian finally growing and transcending his childish, petty self to an extent).
QaF is also fundamentally about humanity, and a celebration of life. There's an idea that everyone is put on this earth to love, no matter how that looks, and that's what the show ultimately upholds as its central value. Love is good. Simple, yet radical. Showing people they are loved is even better, and that's again also something associated with the divine in some ways in the show. For example, the moment where Brian tells off his highly religious, homophobic mother by saying God gave him another chance post-cancer so he can fuck every hot guy he sees, and then God actually comes through and he gets hard for the first time since his surgery (and goes to immediately find Justin). It's a funny scene, but it also could be read as having thematic depth in that Brian is given another chance to go and show Justin that he loves him.
