I was running Vanguard playlists and I ended up in the Prison of Elders with someone named The Rifleman.

Not entirely sure how I felt about that.

Also, as a side note, I was running my gunslinger build with Ace of Spades (my main gun, for anyone not following me ).

I messaged one of my friends about it while I was in there and he said

"Just don't pull your ghost out like Cayde did and you should be fine."

Roles Reversed

This was going to be a start to a series but I never really got past this scene, so uh...might go back and start it in the future. But for now? Have the scraps. xD

They're...dying.

Cayde-6 kneels beside their collapsed form, Sundance hovering just over his shoulder.

There's nothing I can do.

Sharp blue eyes dart along the litany of bullet wounds. Their chest heaving with every breath they struggle to take. No, no, this is wrong. His eyes dart to the door Uldren Sov had escaped through before the Young Wolf's hand rests on his, drawing his attention back to them.

They don't speak, the only sound in the room is that of their strained breaths but he can read the fear in their eyes. The very real and tangible terror at facing their final death. They've slain gods, how can one Awoken Prince do this to them? Cayde's mind is a mess of scenarios and uncertainties but most of all, it reels on the reality before him.

The Young Wolf is dying.

"Come on, Guardian. Say something," there's a pained twinge on the edge of his voice, a whisper of something horrified and anguished. "Maybe a joke?"

He's trying to smile. To give them something pleasant before it's too late but they don't seem to be capable of finding any words. They're trembling.

"I'm here, kid." He manages at last, holding their hand tightly. Tears slip down their cheek, their fingers flex and then go lax. 

Cayde watches in horror as their eyes sag shut and their head lulls to the side.

He stays there for a minute. Two. An agonizing three minutes before Petra's footsteps sound somewhere off to his left. He leans forward, gently touching their head as he closes his eyes.

"Cayde--" Petra stops short.

"We need to get ahold of the Vanguard." Cayde says softly, gently laying the Young Wolf’s hand on their chest. "Get some fireteams to finish up here."

His voice is stiff, void of any emotion. He opens his eyes and gazes at the Guardian. They look like they've found that peace they've been searching for. He just wishes they could of found it some other way.

"See you around, partner." He murmurs, carefully maneuvering them into a position he can pick them up from.

He straightens up, turning to Petra, "I'll head back to the Last City, fill 'em in. Then you and I are calling in some favors."

"I know someone."

"Good. Send me coordinates when you get an answer." His gaze drops to the Guardian in his arms, "Uldren Sov is going to pay for this. I'll kill him myself."

He sounds calmer than he feels. 

That's a first.

cayde who marries yw and right after their honeymoon forsaken happens

Nooo my HEART ;v;

But I’ll do you one even worse, and it’s an idea I’ve played around with for my YW and Cayde:

Cayde was planning on proposing to the Young Wolf after their mission together, but he dies in the Prison of Elders before he gets the chance.

Like, this man had EVERYTHING planned out, something the YW finds out when they go through his stuff after his death.

They find the ring, and the journals, and all the notes and recordings he had detailing all the possible ways this proposal was going to go. He even had a reservation at his favorite ramen shop ready to go. That’s where he was planning on proposing to you at.

“Looks like we’re all done and dusted here kiddos. Ramen’s on me!”

Suddenly that line carries a lot more weight than it did before….

Now you’re playing one of the recordings you find in his stash and you can hear the way he talks to Colonel in the background:

“I dunno Colonel, too cheesy? Am Iayin’ it on too thick?”

[soft clucking in the background]

“Yeahhhh, too cheesy. ALRIGHT, new plan. I’m gonna get this right-”

Sundance features in quite a few of them:

“THAT’S the ring you’re gettin’ them?”

“Hey, it’s sleek! Classy-!”

“-has a little bow on it?”

“…for your information, I thought the bow was cute.”

“Geez, you’re hopeless. Here, how ‘bout this one-”

And finally, you find this one recording, and it’s Cayde just…talking to you. Talking about all the things he would say to you if he could just stop getting stuck in his own head and say what he means.

“I…I know you’re probably never gonna hear this, at least not until I finally get my foot out of my mouth and work up the nerve to tell ya, but, until then…man alive…

“I…I love you so much, Guardian. So…so damn much.

“And I know I sound like a huge sap in sayin’ this, but there…there really ain’t anythin’ I wouldn’t do for ya. You’re just…incredible. And I just…I really hope this all works out. Traveler knows I haven’t felt this way about someone in…a real long time…

“Well…no, I have, but…she…”

He softly chuckles, albeit a little sadly, to himself.

“Story for another day…”

The recorder clicks as the audio stops, the playback now finished.

And all of this effort. All of this planning. All of this care and pure love.

All of it…is gone in an instant.

And Cayde died without ever truly knowing what your answer to his proposal would have been.

Asked my buddy orb this, but figured since you're more knowledgeable in Cayde-lore, figured 'screw it' and decided to ask you too: Did Riven or whoever she was working for/with-if anyone (to my best recollection, it might've been hinted Savathun might've had some hand in Forsaken, but my memory is likely off) specifically want Cayde dead? If he was targeted, why? Did he present a specific threat? Was it part of some long game scheme against the City? Was it Revenge? Or something else? Or am I looking to much into this, and he was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time?

i actually DON'T know about a lot of the Dreaming City lore. i basically only did the Forsaken main quests at the time and didn't even know about seasonal stuff because i'd left the game for a while beforehand

however, i am almost 100% sure that the entire thing had nothing to do with Cayde, specifically. he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and, in the actual grand scheme of everything happening in the Dreaming City/with the Awoken, Cayde's death was actually a TINY detail. he was collateral damage; his death was the center of the narrative because of the player's connection to him, but as for what was happening in the Reef at the time, it had nothing to do with him.

(which isn't to say his death WOULDN'T later become massively important; i've said it before but the loss of Cayde is absolutely critical to lots of major things happening now, but at the time, it was just collateral damage.)

(unless i'm absolutely missing some big obvious thing, in which case, someone please correct me, but as i said, i didn't play any of the Dreaming City stuff that was around at that time. this is just what i've picked up from lore circles in the fandom)

I.  Reckoning

“You are not stopping me from doing this.”

“You act as if I could, but you do know that this…quest- adventure you have planned up in your head in quite stupid.” Uldren crosses his arms, staring at the Awoken who’d he had seen plenty of times, enough times to be considered a type of friend. 

“I know that Queen Mara doesn’t like the idea, but she can’t stop me. I have a curiosity!” She smiles, “Besides, if I find something good and come back, she cannot be mad at me for long.” 

“I will be terribly lonely though.” 

“Oh you’ll be fine, just look over the writings and such I gave you.” Uldren feels her pinch his cheek as he swats her hand away. 

“This is how you treat your Prince?” 

“You are my Prince, but you are also my friend, so yes, it is.” 

Uldren tsks, he didn’t know what to do with her. “Just come back safe.”

“I will!”

What a silly memory to remember within this moment. The Guardian who towers over him looked so much like her- and yet he couldn’t stop himself from spitting out words within what he was sure was his last moments. She could not remember him now, and she would never be allowed to. His mind was muddled, he thought he had his sister, and now a long dead friend is the one with Ace of Spades aimed straight at him, this was his reckoning. He had lost, and so this was his fate.
