POKEDDEXY DAY 18: WATER
Arsu [♂️] Timid, alert to sounds! A docile and withdrawn member of Master Mustard's dojo. He relies heavily on Azizos, another member of the dojo and his close friend-turned-boyfriend, to help him through the training sessions.
recent DLC shenanigans made me realize how much i actually love SwSh's DLC and Kubfu's story.. it might not be as motivating or polished as SV's DLC story, but i got to choose my baby bear's path and so i feel really attached to him!! also he is dating Azi who belongs to @fishiousfriend and they are honeybears

(@wingsofachampion) Hiya! Who is Mustard? -Tropius
Are you aware of the Isle of Armor? The island off the coast of Galar? I wouldn't blame you if you weren't. It's quite the exclusive area. Only those with a special pass, such as myself, are allowed to set foot there. Mustard is the owner of a dojo located on the island called the "Master Dojo". That's about as much as I can tell you on that topic- I've no interest in training in a group such as that. Perhaps more impressively, he was champion of Galar for eighteen straight years way back when, or so Opal tells me. You wouldn't know by looking at him... he's quite unassuming until you engage him in battle.
I've defeated him in tournaments before, and quite handily, I must say. No amount of training can change the fact that fighting types are weak to fairies~

SwSh HC's I've had in the Vault for the past few years (removing various minor OCs)
Full Names
Leon Hart Eudios
Hop Astralis Eudios
Soren “Skyler” Griffin Eudios (The boys' dad)
Amelia Katharine Paganous (The boys' mom) (she use to be the major league flying type gym leader of Hammerlocke! :D)
Raihan Vouivre (Wyvern) Laburn (Laburn from a friend on the Champion Time Server)
Nessa Locke (hehhe loch ness monster joke)
Oleana Delila (I don't recall from where)
Malcolm Rose (I don't recall from where)
General Hcs (straight from my notes)
Raihan’s been all over the world, travelling seven regions before settling on Galar because its close to home and because he made the most amount of friends there
The process in which a new Champion is chosen if the current one dies or retires is complicated. They have to have a list of at least four trainers who they would recommend for the Champion position in such cases ready, and then those selected trainers would have to battle with the Gym Leaders and Elite Four (assuming that the people on the list isn’t a Leader or Elite)
Mustard’s successor was a Poison, Ice, and Psychic type specialist who hailed from Galar’s Tundra
Leon wrote down Sonia and Raihan as who would be the ones to take his crown should anything tragic befall him, but he also has Mustard on that list just in case
Ages: 12 (Allister), 14 (Hop), 15 (Marnie, Bede), 17 (Bea, Avery, Klara, Hyde), 20 (Sonia, Leon, Milo), 21 (Raihan, Piers, Nessa), 22 (Gordie)
Had the roles been reversed a bit, Sonia would've been Galar's Champion
That's due to Sonia being a potential Sword to Leon's potential Shield, the wolves choose people who were always set to be on even playing fields in terms of combat capabilities. But if there was ever a point where that balance is tipped over to the favour of one, then the synergy between the Sword & Shield together in combat would be disastrous
Kabu's Team when he was a lad: Pelliper, Relicanth, Vileplum, Dusclops, Altaria, Manectric, Linoone, Mightyena, Magcargo, Camperupt, Shiny Ninetales, and Blaziken
A lot of trainers generally have monotype teams due to the easier training, food, and care requirements
Marnie had a surprisingly normal Gym Challenge, outside of telling off Team Yell every now and then, she was pretty much just Vibin’
Isle Of Armor Hc's
Leon & Sonia both got a Kubfu but Sonia gave up too soon and Leon got lost
Sonia would’ve chosen the Tower of Water and Leon would’ve chosen the Tower of Darkness
Sonia thought that since she’s friends with Nessa and thus familiar with water types, it would’ve been easier on her to go through the Water Tower
Leon thought the Tower of Darkness sounded tougher, but after getting a bit too lost he decided that either would work but he would’ve preferred the Tower of Darkness
Raihan started his battle practice with Sandstorms in the Isle, which continued to happen once he found a place that would regularly have and be accustomed to Sandstorms (ex: the Desert in Hoenn)
Despite that, he caught his Tyranitar in Kalos and brought it along for his journey through Unova
Klara and Avery are siblings who hail from one of the settlements on the Tundra. To try and bring more fame and attention to their precious home, Klara tried to become a popstar and Avery tried to become a famous Psychic alongside some distant relatives
They quickly switched to try and become Gym Leaders once those goals prove to be too difficult, but after finding a more than worthy challenger in the MC & Co.
The Master Dojo is actually a multi-story building but also an extremely wide one, not as wide as most would except but wider than they think
When not used to be a trail for the one who has the Isle’s Sacred Armour, its a regular training building
But if one requests it, they can have the special training activated for them and a few others for a session
Mustard did use to be the Stow-On-Side Gym Leader, but that was years before Bea’s time so she doesn’t even know it until she visits the Isle for training
Hyde’s a teenager, he’s just really short
He half-assedly participated in the Gym Challenge and got his ass kicked by her in the Cup
Honey is still part of her old Company, but as a distant investor and consultant
Mustard only allows himself to go all out on Four trainers: Leon, Honey, Sonia, and Opal
Sonia doesn’t know that she’s one of them because Self-Esteem Issues
He adds Marnie, Bede, and Hop to this list once he sees their potential
He also adds Raihan when that boy finally becomes Leon’s official Rival, Piers when he finally finds confidence in his battling skill, and Nessa
Leon, surprisingly, didn’t get lost in the Isle except for the one time when he was going to the Tower with Kubfu, but that was due the raging Sandstorms
Sonia also had a Kubfu, but due to storm she gave up and returned it, no objections
Leon & Sonia’s starters are actually from Mustard, but due to someone pulling some strings, they got them as their first Pokemon
Leon’s capable of hand-to-hand combat, Sonia’s an expert on disarming someone with a weapon
Despite this, Leon’s a Shield and Sonia’s a Sword
They returned their Kubfu to Mustard because they felt like they failed
In another timeline, Mustard would give those two to the next Sword and Shield, to— Hop
In another timeline, Mustard would give those two to the next Sword and Shield, to— Victor
In another timeline, Mustard would give those two to the next Sword and Shield, to— Gloria
Mustard wasn’t the Champion Leon had to battle to be crowned, but Mustard knew that if Leon could match him— and eventually beat him— that that boy could become Galar’s Champion
Mustard’s lost partner Pokemon is not known by the press of current times, only Opal truly knows what it was. As does Honey. Some guess it was an Eevee, many more suggest an Eeveelution
The only way Sharpedo don't go after you while in the water is either to use a boat or have several water type Pokemon out and around for your own safety
Don't use red boats though, they confuse it for prey. Leon and Piers learned the hard way
Nessa refuses to train any of the Psyduck line because back in the Isle as a challenger, she saw one sneeze in a cave and released a bit shockwave that punted her to a wall and knocked her out
Honey terrifies everyone of the young Adult Crew (Piers, Leon, Sonia, Raihan, Nessa, Milo, and Gordie) as much as they adore her
Crown Tundra Hcs
Malcom was the one who always looked out for both of them, him and Peony, when they were kids so Peony could have a childhood
This, in turn, made Malcom a lot more serious and ‘mature’ at a younger age while Peony is a bit too naive as an adult
The Mayor of the settlement is Klara and Avery’s grandfather, who raised them alongside the settlement after he took them in after their parents died
Avery and Klara practically inhaled and ate up every piece of information they could find on the King, because he could make their home better, right? He could make it so their friends don’t have to leave with their parents to the big city, right?
Calyrex watched Klara and Avery grow up, the two kids being it only source of power for years, but then they left, not long after giving up on believing it’s ‘fairy tale’
That doesn’t stop the two siblings from trying to restore the faith in the lost King, especially after hear two kids younger than they speak vividly and furiously about myths and legends and gods

Isle Connections Ch5 Similar Situations
(Warnings: Toxic family and relationships mentioned in this chapter. Reader also gets pushed down and has a twisted ankle.
 This will also expand over a course of some time. I'm going off the info provided by Avery's league cards added below:
Avery comes from a long-standing family of psychics. Each of has been from the same bloodline as Avery, and thus, Avery has been destined to bear the burden of Gym Leader since even before he was born. Ever since he was a child, Avery could freely move things with his mind but lacked other skills, such as teleportation or telepathy . This has caused the rest of his family to label him as a disappointment. Avery has a great deal of respect for Slowpoke, as they go about their business at their own pace, no matter what others say.
Avery has always been very proud and would levitate any opponent who dared defeat him. This behavior caused his status as a Gym Trainer to be revoked. During this time of despair and desperation, his Slowpoke found a flyer for the Master Dojo, leading to Avery's current circumstances. Avery caused friction with many of the other students initially, but the kindness of Honey and Mustard slowly helped him to mellow out and become more friendly. Recently he has been training hard with his now-evolved Slowbro to prove himself better than a certain new student at the dojo.)

You had thought long and hard about what Ms. Honey had said to you. Eventually Gloria and Hop arrived back while you were thinking and you were concerned when you saw how dirtied up and tired they were.
"What happened to you guys?! You look like you rolled down a dirt hill!"
"Well we found a giant vespiquin nest and accidentally fell inside it's den bit don't worry! We're alright!," Hop held up his hands seeing your shocked face and held up a plastic see through bag full of pink honeycomb and globs of sticky honey. "And we found the max honey! I'm gonna split it with Glory and take some back to Sonia with the max mushrooms too! I'm sure she'd love to study it!"
"C'mon! Let's go show Master Mustard!"
In the end they ended up dragging them with you inside and up to Mustard who look pleasantly surprised that they had succeeded in their little quest.
"Welcome back my wondering wooloo," he greeted you all with a smile. "Oh. And what is that sweet scent I detect wafting through the air around you?"
"Ha! That'd be the max honey! We got our hands on a nice haul of it!," Hop said proudly showing off the bag.
Mustard smiled wider. "Really? Already?"
"You out me and Gloria on the case. There's nothing we can't do when together!" Gloria nodded proudly making Mustard chuckle.
"Haha! You did a mighty fine job finding it with only a hint from me. Nicely done both of you!"
"You didn't forget what that certain something was for a second did you?"
"Who? Little old me?" He chuckled making both Hop and Gloria look at him deadpanned before he waved them both off. "But enough of me. You two did well so Gloria can have a break from training for the rest of the day. Get some dinner and clean yourselves up. There'll be plenty of more training tomorrow."
He left then going through the doors back into his own home. You supposed you could've just asked him where Avery was then but...you were still unsure about what to do about this at all. You'd have to think more about this more before you decided what to do next-
"I'm gonna take that leap in my training."
You were snapped out of your thoughts by Gloria's voice as Hop looked at her. "What, Mate?"
She inhaled before steeling her gaze. "He said when ah was ready with Kubfu ta see him about the next step in mah trainin'! She held a fist. "I've been training for months now n' I know we're ready! First thing tomorrow, M' gonna take that leap!"
Hop immediately smiled at her. "Alright, Glory! With all the work you've done you'll do amazing!"
"You'll be great," you agreed, "....I'll be taking my own leap tomorrow too."
Both looked at you. "Whatcha mean Y/n?"
"Don't worry about it. It's just something I need to take care of."
That night you all cleaned up and slept. Or as best you could. You felt very anxious and nervous about everything that'll happen tomorrow but you thought long and hard and decided to take Honey's advice. You were going to talk to Avery. It'd be best for everyone involved if you apologized to him and smoothed everything out. So tomorrow you'd ask Mustard where you could find him. Early the next morning you woke up bright and early and caught up to Gloria and Hop on their way towards Mustard's  office but not before you insisted on them getting something to eat so they wouldn't be hungry later today. Mustard was already ready for her watching everyone else training.
"Ah. Good morning, Gloria!," he greeted with his usual bright smile. "Are you ready for today's training? I think I have a student that'll go extra hard on you today!"
Gloria shook her head with a determined face. "Not today." He hummed curious. "Ye said ta come to you when I thought kubfu n' I was ready ta take on the next step o' my trainin'! We'll I'm ready now and I'm here to make that leap!"
He hummed again carefully looking over her then at kubfu. "Well it seems you both have grown more confident! But are you sure you're ready for this? There's no shame if you'd like to train up a little more first."
Gloria shook her no. "Nay! I know we're ready! Please lemme try."
Again he smiled and carefully looked them over for a moment... before smiling wider. "Very well. I daresay I think you're both ready!" Gloria lit up happily as he nodded his head towards the door. "Follow me you two."
"Wait." He paused to look at you. You hesitated before stuttering out. "I-I wanted to ask you something important-"
"I'm afraid that will have to wait after I get Gloria on her way but follow me and I'll get right to you. Come along." He smiled knowingly. "I think I can help you along the way as well."
He turned away and continued walking out of the dojo. You three looked at one another.. before Gloria started following him and you two started walking after her. You three all followed Mustard outside of the dojo and followed him towards the Forest of Focus. You all followed him through the woods slowly step after step until you all came out into a clearing. A similar clearing to the one you found Avery in. Again the anxiety bubbled up as you silently just followed him until he stepped halfway in the middle of the clearing and turned back to Gloria smiling looking around a little bit before nodding and speaking.
"Phew. Guess this is as a good spot as any," he spoke looking at Gloria. "Now then. If you want to get stronger there are special training grounds just for kubfu. Prepare yourselves for the Towers of Two Fists! The blue tower is the Tower of Water!" He pointed towards the left. "Located that way. And the red tower is the Tower of Darkness." He then pointed to the right. "Located that way. Chose wisely since you'll only be able to climb one of the towers. Kubfus fighting style will change depending on the tower you chose and the types it'll get will change as well. This will be the next step in your training."
Gloria blinked wide eyed before looking to the left and then slowly looked to the right. "I can only choose one huh? What's so special 'bout the towers?"
"Each tower's five stories tall and each floor has a tough opponent waiting for you. I chose eight of my toughest senior students for this so it'll challenge you for sure. Im really looking forward to seeing you two make it to the top of one of those towers. It's going to be exciting. So...which one will it be?"
Gloria fell silent looking blank for a moment again looking both ways carefully for a long time silently. Calculating and thinking hard about this. After a long moment she finally spoke. "Well...Mr brother's already trainin' ta be the next water type gym leader." She looked towards the right before pointing with a firm look. "So ah pick the Tower of Darkness!"
Mustard nodded. "Wonderful choice. I look forward to seeing you there!"
"I'm coming too," Hop piped up. "I can't wait to see her in action." He paused as Mustard shook his head.
"No. This is something Gloria must do herself. She can't have any help from anyone else or else she fails."
"Oh...Can I at least go with her then?"
Mustard hummed... before nodding. "You may be allowed to accompany her to the tower but you're not allowed inside. Alright?"
Hop nodded sighing. "Yeah. I guess that's fair." He still smiled before turning to Gloria. "I bet I can still beat her to the tower though."
"Oh you're on!"
Hop laughed before shooting off running away from you all towards the right with Gloria smiling and quickly running after him with Kubfu close behind at her legs. You watched them laughing and run off through the clearing and into the woods until you couldn't hear or see them anymore. You were glad they were happy at least. Gloria would do great. You believed I'm her.
"Now." You jumped whirling back to the old smiling back. "You wanted to ask me something?"
You blinked before shaking your head. "Uh..Y-Yeah." you cleared your throat and looked away to avoid eye contact which made him raise an eyebrow. "I-..Um-...I-I was wondering if you could tell m-me where Avery is. I-....I need to talk to him about something important."
There was silence as he just looked at you silently knowingly. Before smiling wider. "Nope! I have no idea where he is!"
"What?!"
"Little old me forgot sadly." Your face dropped- "But I do know he likes to take his rapidash on walks through the berry grove allegedly. You might want to try your luck there. Whoops! I just remembered that I have somewhere to be!" He just casually stepped aside and started walking off in a random direction. "Good luck with your own mission. Im looking forward to seeing your own progress."
You shook your head and turned..but paused when you realized he was already gone. There wasn't a trace of him anywhere. For a little old man he sure moved fast. Your head silently looked back to the left. ...The berry grove huh? You knew where that was. Slowly you started walking that way Silver walking behind you as you made your way back through the Forest of Focus. The greenery making the forest beautiful but you didn't focus on that. Only pushing through to where your destination was...And you knew you were in the right place as the trees started getting smaller and smaller and their branches were full of berries. You stopped in the middle of the grove looking around..but there wasn't any sign of Avery much to your disappointment. Where could that guy be?! Mr. Mustard said he'd be here. Silver didn't pay any attention too busy distracted by the plump berries hanging on the trees before looking over and seeing the smallest tree. His appetite enticed him to walk over towards it and the plump ripe pecha berries handing from its lowest branches. He kicked his lips looking back at the branches and stared at them from the base of the tree contemplating on how to get them. That's when a hand shot out of the bush next to him and snatched him up!! Silver's loud startled cry made you jump and whirl around wide eyed before you froze.
"SILVER!!"
"I FINALLY GOT ONE!!," A man in a dojo uniform shouted proudly holding up Silver by the jacket he wore. "A CAUGHT A SHINY!!"
Silver kicked out and struggled in the man's drip chirping in both anger and panic looking at you for help. "SILVER!" The man jolted as you yelled making him look at you wide eyed. "THAT'S MY DRIZZLIE!! PUT HIM DOWN!"
The man blinked. "Your drizzlie?" His eyes narrowed. "How do I know you're telling the truth and not just trying to take my shiny from me?"
"Why the heck would a wild shiny wear a jacket?!" The man blinked...and just dumbly looked back to the small jacket Silver always wore. "Look! Silver is mine so just put him down!"
He didn't. "Tell you what. How about we trade for it?"
"Silver is a HE not an it! And no way!! I'm not going to just trade him off to a random stranger!"You stomped up to him. "Now give him back!"
"No way!" He held Silver higher as the drizzlie continued kicking and struggling. He scowled at you. "I've been looking for a shiny since I got here and I'm not giving up the first one I see! Just get another one!"
"NO!! GIVE HIM BACK!!" You lunged at him but he was bigger and taller than you, able to push you back easily with another arm as Silver cried out from his hand. "GIVE ME BACK MY POKEMON!!"
"GET OFF ME!" A hand shoved you hard pushing you back and making you trip to land on your side in the grass.
As soon as you hit the dirt a blue aura surrounded the man. He gave a noise of confusion before he yelped out as he was suddenly levitated into the air. He floated high above you before given a hard shake. Silver dropped from his hand with a loud noise and landed on the ground next to you. Immediately you grabbed him and bear hugged the Pokemon to your chest staring up confused at the floating man. What the heck was-
"How rude." You both looked over. "Now that's no way for a man to treat a lady. Hadn't your parents taught you any manners?"
Your eyes widened. "AVERY!"
Said blonde man stood there one glowing hand held up levitating the man a frown on his face. Behind him was a rapidash looking annoyed too. "Now do us both a favor and leave my sight."
With a snap the man was dropped harshly with a thud. Panicked, the other man immediately stood up and ran from the scowling psychic. You sat up onto your knees slowly watching as he left .. before sighing and pulling Silver closer to you.
"Are you alright?"
You looked up at Avery staring at you with an unreadable expression. Blinking you nodded. "Uh. Yeah. I'm ok."
He nodded. "That's all that matters. Good day to you." He turned to walk away.
"HEY!! WAIT!!" You shot up to your feet quickly and lunged at him to latch onto his elbow which startled him into jumping and blinking at your face. "Don't go! I've been looking for you everywhere!"
Avery stared stunned at you jaw dropped and sputtering looking between you and where you held his arm. "I-...Y-You what?!"
"I came to apologize!," you blurted out before he could do anything else, and he was again shocked into silence. "I was a huge jerk and I shouldn't have shoved you or yelled at you or called you names! That was absolutely wrong of me and I'm really sorry for everything!" There was still stunned silence as Avery continued to stare at you before you sighed and released his arm letting your arm drop back to hold Silver better. "I don't expect you to accept my apology because honestly you don't have to but I just wanted to say sorry."
Avery still stared at you for a long, long... LONG silent moment as you figured nervously under his gaze. Eventually he slowly sighed before nodding. "Very well then. Miss Y/n, I accept your apology." Your face perked up as Avery pressed a hand to his own chest. "But let me give my own apologies to you for that unruly and brutish sight you had caught me in. I am . utterly ashamed of my past behaviors and..You were absolutely right." His eyes glanced to the side. "That was completely wrong of me. When the Master found out what I did..Well let's just saw my punishment was extended for two more months and I had to apologize to everyone."
Your eyes widened. You.. Weren't expecting Avery to be so calm or take this so well. "It's..Ok. But still..I went too far when I brought your gym leader status into it. I uh..Kinda heard what happened."
He huffed giving a small sad smile. "Yes. Well it's not exactly a secret about what I've done. I have no one to blame but myself for my behavior but I am striving to do better! Don't think I've given up on gaining my gym leader status back in order yet!" He finally smiled brightly making you feel relieved. "But.. Um. Exact h-how much did you hear about me?"
"Oh. Just that you kinda got in trouble with the league and you came here to train." You hesitated for a moment. "Um...Also that your family..is a bunch of jerks too."
He looked surprised for a split second before again smiling sadly. "Jerks..Well that's certainly one way to describe them I would use much harder names that I wouldn't repeat in front of a lady."
You blinked surprised. "That bad huh?"
"Oh, you don't know the half of it my dear lady." He crossed his arms with a sigh, looking off somewhere. "My family...is very hard for me to get along with. We don't exactly see eye to eye on a lot of subjects. Most of them are..very cruel in fact."
Your face softened as you looked back to him. "Yeah. I know how that feels. My parents are really terrible people too." Surprised he glanced back at your saddened look. "My mom is really... REALLY hard on me."
His brows rose higher after that still in a bit of shock and curiosity now. "Hard on you? ...What had she done?"
"Ooh Hoho! Where do I even start?" You strained an unhappy smile and gestured at nothing. "She was always difficult to deal with but it wasn't always on such a bad level. She...never did a whole lot but things weren't bad until my parents divorced when I was around eleven or twelve. That's when things were hard." You didn't see the way Avery's eyes widened behind those glasses but didn't comment as you angrily ranted. "It's hard to explain. But it's like as soon as he left a switch flipped. Everything was wrong. Anything fun was wrong. Anything liked was wrong." ..You shrugged. "But then again thing's weren't easy once Dad left. Everything was more expensive now. M-Mom had to work a w-whole lot to support us. But she took it way too far! Everything was 'too expensive' now." You made air qoutes with your hands. "She had me start working right away to help pay bills."
"When you were just eleven or twelve!?"
You nodded. "Looots of babysitting and walking dogs- Uh..pokemon and mowing lawns and tutoring and shoveling driveways to help pay the bills. And that was in between the chores and constant studying she'd had me do! And Dad was no help considering he just ghosted us after that! UGH!!" Your hands were thrown up in the air as you wished you could punch a pillow. Making Silver squeal out in your grip. "..Sorry, Sil. It was like I was in a box! I'm so glad I finally left. We uh...Don't talk to each other anymore. She was just a narcissist now that I think about it. It was always 'Her', 'her', 'her' and never once about ME except when it was something I could do for HER! Or something I did 'wrong' or how I should date her nice wealthy friend's son- UGH!!" Your face fell into your hands. "It was just a nightmare."
Avery only stared at you as you ended your rant hugging Silver close to you. He contemplated something in his mind, hesitated, before he spoke up. "My..parents view me as a disappointment." You paused.. before snapping at him wide eyed but he was only staring off at nothing.
"What?! Why would they do that? Sure you might've gotten a bit..off the path as a gym leader but you're doing so much better now. You even got stronger-"
"No. No. It's not about the league-..I mean it IS about the league too but it's not fully that." He attempted to explain to you before he just sighed and let his arms drop. "My..family lineage is made up of many psychics like myself. Only.. they're not like myself. Not at all. All of my family can use teleportation or telepathy or more common a combination of both. I however..can N-Not use either of those gifts."
"You... can't?"
He shook his head. A hand reached up to twirl around one of the pokeballs making it bob around his fingers. "The only thing I'm able to do is levitate objects. Which is why I was labeled a...d-disappointment."
"What? How could they say that?" He looked surprised when you reached out and grabbed his shoulder. "That's still a really special gift. I don't know anyone else that can levitate things! Your powers are still rare and really cool! Look at how they helped me! You're not a disappointment. Avery, you're a hero."
He blinked wide eyed at you for a moment before smiling with a huff. "I did save the day didn't I? Yes! Avery old boy, you still got it!" He paused feeling the sudden force of more weight being pushed onto his and looked at your hand, then at your wobbling form, and then down to your legs. Your left leg lifted up off the ground. He pointed at it. "I dare say, what's wrong with your leg?"
"Oh. I twisted my ankle when that guy pushed me."
He looked concerned. "Does it hurt?"
"A bit. It's gonna be hard to get back."
"By yourself? And leave a damsel in distress alone?" Avery shook his head before grabbing your arm. "Oh no. I can not in good conscience leave you to hop back to the dojo and risk hurting yourself further. I'll simply lead you back on my elegant rapidash."
"Your rapidash?" You blinked looking behind him and back to the unicorn pokemon who still stared at you. Oh. You almost forgot about him. "Oh. ... He's very beautiful." The rapidash tossed his head back, head up high, proud of your compliment. "Are you sure he'd be alright with it? I wouldn't want to make him uncomfortable."
"Such a caring mindset, but I'm sure Rapidash wouldn't mind as long as you don't try pulling his mane. He hates that."
"Don't worry. I won't."
You were expecting that Avery would help you move to get on the rapidash, but you weren't expecting him to suddenly scoop you up bridal style making you squeak and him chuckle as a pink spread across your face. He walked you over to the rapidash that knelt down to allow his trainer to gently set you on his back and stood back up.
"Don't worry, My Lady. We'll walk slowly so you won't fall off. Just hang on. And don't worry. If you fall, I'll catch you again in my arms." You went a deeper pink and he chuckled again.
Hanging onto the rapidash, Avery slowly lead him back to the dojo where everyone stopped and stared as Avery lead the horse pokemon right into the dojo and straight to a worried Ms. Honey. When you both explained the situation she looked both worried and angry at the person who did this. Avery helped you down off the rapidash and you were quickly rushed away by Ms. Honey to be treated. Thankfully it wasn't anything serious and you'd be better soon. Hop and Gloria had also returned a little while after. Like you suspected, she not only passed her next step in training but also managed to evolve her kubfu into an ursifu! You were so happy for her! In Mustard's own words-
"Impressive. Very impressive indeed! I knew I could put my trust in you. Gloria, you've done well to train Kubfu up to that level of strength. You're the first one to pass this trial. Leon was my best student and he too tried this task..but he never completed it. He kept getting lost along the way. No matter how old I get, seeing someone grow brings my heart joy. However there's still one last part of your training you must pass. The ultimate hurdle. The toughest opponent on the Isle will challenge you soon, so you must continue your training and train yourself hard in order to have a chance to beat him. Are you willing to put in that much more work?"
Gloria agreed without hesitation. "Ya got it! I'll train harder than ever n' take him head on!"
"Haha! That's what I love to hear. I will contact him when I think you're ready. In the meantime rest up for the day. You deserve it."
From that day onwards Gloria continued training harder. Often battling Hop even to help get stronger. The two of them also managed to find that guy all his digletts earning her a few last Alola Region pokemon. Your ankle got better fast too. You and Hop continued to help Gloria with her share of chores and you kept a watchful eye on the both of them like you promised Leon. Avery seemed to be better now that you both talked things out. In fact he felt so much better that he approached you one day surprising you. You were both outside watching as Hop was coaching Gloria through a series of push ups when he walked up to you.
"Miss Y/n. Do you perhaps have a moment to spare?"
"Uh. Sure. What's up, Avery?"
He smiled. "Well it accured to me after speaking with Gloria that you don't have any pokemon other than your shiny there."
"Silver Veil. And yeah. I never really got any others. Why?"
"I just so happen to have an extra ponyta that I have no use for." He held up a pokeball to you. "And I don't trust Anyone else here to care for her the same way you care about your drizzlie- Uh. Mr. Silver Veil."
You stared at him in awe before he nudged his hand forward allowing you to slowly take it from him. ... before smiling. "Avery. This is so nice of you." You smiled widely happy at him. "Thank you."
He lit up a pink before clearing his throat and smiling. "But of course. I always-"

Kairo, your fighting-type gym leader for the Pokemon Trainer AU
Oooh he ourple.
Kairo is the Unova region's fighting-type expert, and a master of martial arts in his own right, taking post in Opelucid City. He is very serious as a martial artist and pokemon trainer, having been trained under the same type experts from different parts of the world. Despite this, he is very encouraging to those he battles and always has wisdom to dispense, whether he emerges victorious from the fight or not. In addition to his duties as a gym leader, he also owns a dojo that trainers can visit to help up their pokemon's less stellar stats.
Kairo is a Unovan native, and has ancestry from all over the world. Although he enjoys martial arts, he prefers it more as a way to stay active, but will gladly instruct anyone who wishes to know it for self-defense.
His team consists of:
Taeko (Mienshao, female, Careful nature)
Lee (Throh, male, Relaxed nature)
Shu (Sawk, male, Jolly nature)
Ryu (Lucario, female, Bold nature)
Hugo (Hawlucha, male, Sassy nature)
Ripple (Poliwrath, male, Modest nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Similar to other characters, Karate goes by a different name in the AU for simplicity... and also because it felt kind of weird for people to know his actual name while calling him something that deals with his profession outside of being a gym leader. While it was going to happen anyway, this change was not actually implemented until this posting. From my brief research, the name he uses here can mean either "victorious one" or "master" depending on the origin you're looking at.
-Of course his trainer inspirations are the various fighting-type experts over the course of the series. The appearance is mostly inspired by the clothing of various forms of martial arts.
-Karate/Kairo as the fighting-type gym leader was actually chosen by poll! He was up against the other three "kong" bosses from Jungle Beat, and is the only one who got more than one vote.
-I mentioned a really long time ago that there were three characters that I had to redraw. Karate/Kairo is one of them, being one of two that I drew but was unable to post before my computer went fucky-wucky in July 2022. His and Taeko's design here is mostly redrawn from what I remember of the original.
-He and Wrinkly were neighbors as children.
-The fighting-type experts he's trained under include Marshall of Unova's Elite Four (at least in regards to his youth) and Mustard of the Isle of Armor.
-Kairo is quite fond of bluk berries, so much so that he has a patch of plants of them that he grows himself. If he happens to find himself with an overabundance, he'll give the berries to his gym trainers or sell them to shops for a reasonable price despite their rarity in the region.

Yo Piers! I got a weird question for you. Basicallyyyy was gifted a Kubfu by a…shifty person. Anyways!!! D’you know anything about the evolution process for this guy? It’s kinda hard to find a lot of information it seems like it’s kinda a sacred ritual to this island in Galar?? I’m not fuckin’ sure why you’d know anything but…y’know.
-Marshal (@three-out-of-four)
Hey Marshal, I know a bit about it yea.
Basically, if ya want the kubfu to evolve, ye got to go to the Isle of Armor and talk to Master Mustard (He used t'be a gym leader long time ago, he's retired now) at his dojo there.
A lot of us startin' out as gym leaders train under him, but very few are chosen to go through the sacred ritual. Unfortunately I never did, but I hear it involves a battle either at the Tower of Darkness or Water. After that Kubfu will evolve into Urshifu- and dependin' on which tower ya choose, it'll either be a dual dark or water type.
Hopefully, this helps ya out a little. Sorry I don't know much, mate.

Mountain Distance (Pokemon Sword and Shield)
Tumblr media
Heyo everyone! This is a commission for the wonderful @fullstone22! They have requested some more Gordie content, and how can I say no to that? :D Really- I’ve been slowly but surely working my way back to Pokemon; this fic really made me happy to write, and I hope it makes you happy too! Thank you so much for your support!
Summary: You were invited to train in the Isle Of Armor for a year. It’s gonna be a tough time without you, but your boyfriend Gordie is supportive as ever.
“Do you have everything? Potions, poke balls, snacks?” Gordie fussed beside you as you straightened your bag, the sound of your train growing closer. Since you’d been invited to the Isle of Armor, Gordie was a ball of excitement and nerves. The closer the day of your departure got, the more anxious he grew.
If you were being honest, you found it rather endearing. It reminded you of Melody in some ways.
Not that you’d ever voice that outloud.
“Gordie, I’ll be fine.” You laughed, walking up and taking his hands gently, bringing them to your lips. “It’s only for a year, and I’ll be staying with Master Mustard at his dojo. You’ve met him and his wife; they’re great people. Once I’m there I’ll call you up and give you all the updates.”
“You better- I’m not sleeping until you do.” Gordie started to pout, making you laugh as you leaned forward and kissed it away.
“I’ll be sure to come back and visit, and I’ll call you every night.” You told him between kisses, pressing your foreheads together. “And YOU better take care of yourself too. No distractions during gym battles while I’m gone.”
“Can’t be helped; you're my muse.” Gordie smiled, kissing you back tenderly just as the train to Isle Armor arrived. The conductor; a tall man with unusually bright silver eyes;  nodded at you in greeting before taking your things.
“I gotta go. I love you, Gordie. I promise to call!” You gave him one last kiss before backing into the train, keeping your eyes on him as you took a seat. “Win the championship for me!”
“That’s my line!” Gordie called out with a wet laugh as you rode away, the sound of the heavy machinery drowning out his call. Before long, you were off, leaving Gordie at the station.
“Have fun, (Y/N).” He whispered, tucking his hands into his pockets and turning to leave. Just as he did so, his phone vibrated in his pocket.
Pulling it out, it had one new message:
{(Y/N): Hey, guess what? I love you :D}
Gordie laughed, shaking his head as he walked back home, writing a responding “I love you too”.
Maybe the year won’t be so bad afterall.
~~~
“And wouldn’t you know it? Just as I thought I had all of the Wooloo’s secure, the smallest one of all followed me into my house! She wouldn’t go back- she stayed by my side the entire time.” Milo laughed as he spoke, reminiscing on his latest endeavor with the new Wooloo babies. “She reminds me so much of my brother when he was a tot!”
Gordie nodded along, half listening. It had been a few months since he’s seen his partner. While they stayed true to their promise to call every day and visit at least once a month, it didn’t mean his longing for them eased.
Today though- it hadn’t been longing that was distracting him. At least- not that entirely.
The other night, he had a dream of them. They were reunited once more, running about a great green field and throwing themselves into each other's arms. At some point his partner had him pinned, tickling him like no tomorrow and blowing raspberries against his stomach.
It was a nice dream, but it put the rock gym leader in an awful lee mood.
“You’ve been quiet today, Gord. What’s on your mind?” Milo asked, smiling patiently as the gym leader startled.
“Just thinking, that’s all.” Gordie tried for a smile, internally cringing when Milo furrowed his brow. “I guess I’m really missing (Y/N), today.”
“Ah, I see.” Milo nodded, seeming satisfied with the answer. “Hang in there, Gordie! They’ll be back before you know it.”
“Yeah…you're right. Thanks.” Gordie bit down a sigh as he turned back to his phone. He’d be fine. He’d just have to make it until you either visit again or your home. He could do this-
A sudden poke to the side made him spasm, nearly chucking his phone. “Gah! M-Milo?”
The redhead merely smiled. Green eyes aflame with all knowing. “What? You look so down I thought I’d cheer you up, that’s all.”
Gordie found himself scooting away some, feeling his face burn as Milo turned to face him properly. “I’m really not that upset; I’ll be fine in time-”
“Oh no! You're clearly in need of cheering up now, yes?” Milo moved so fast Gordie could barely react, quickly pinning him to the couch below with a wide grin. “(Y/N) would be disappointed if you stayed so sullen. What am I supposed to tell them if I let you carry on?”
“You talked to them?” Gordie was about to ask more questions when hands started pinching his waist and sides, making him squirm and giggle. “Wehhehehehn?”
“The other day. They told me whenever you start looking especially down to help you out.” Milo leaned down so he could speak into his friend's ear, a teasing note in his tone. “They also told me about helping you out in your lee moods.”
Gordie flushed near crimson, his laughter increasing when Milo found a particularly sensitive spot on his ribs, making him snort. “Whahahahhat, whehhehen did yohohohou heahahhar- Gehahahahahahaha!” Fingers were now under his arms, pressing through the thick material of his jacket with little trouble. “Mihihihihiihlo!”
“Hm? What is it, Gordie?” His friend cooed, clearly having a great time.
“Ihihihihihit tihihiihihihikcles!”
“So it does!” Milo chuckled, reaching up and grabbing Gordie’s hands. “Hey, Gordie. What’s your favorite fruit?”
Oh no. Oh dear. “Dohohohon’t you dahhahhare-”
“Cause mine is…Raspberries!” Milo grinned before burying face into Gordie’s stomach.
PFFFFFFFFT!
“AH! AHEHAHAHHAHAHA! MIHIHIIIHIHLOO!” Gordie howled, twisting this way and that as Milo blew raspberry after raspberry. Even with his shirt protecting his skin, the raspberries were ridiculously effective. Each one sent wave after wave of ticklish tingles up and down his nerves, making him scream and flail. “COOHOOHOHOHOME OHOHOOHOOHN!”
“Don’t tell me you're not having fun, Gordie.” Milo said between attacks, the big brother in him coming out full force. His hands released the blondes before coming back to his sides, wiggling into the soft flesh of his torso and adding to the Gordie’s predicament. “When (Y/N) was here, the two of us would gang up on you all the time! You didn’t fight back then, and your night fighting back now!”
Gordie could only cackle as he shoved at the farmer’s shoulders. “YOHOHOOHOHU EHEHHEHEHEHVIL!”
“And you're too ticklish!” Milo laughed into his stomach, nuzzling him gently before finally sitting back. “Feeling better, friendo?”
His hair was a mess. His cheeks were aflame and his sunglasses were crooked. His lungs were on fire and his entire body felt tingly from head to toes.
Milo asked him if he was feeling better?
Honestly…yeah. He kinda was.
“Yoohohu suck.” He laughed, shoving the redhead and making Milo wheeze so hard he rolled off the couch. Before long the two of them were laughing hysterically, overcome with glee.
Yeah- he could make it the rest of the year.
~~~
It was less than 7 degrees celsius this morning. Everything was ice cold- including Gordie, but he didn’t care.
Standing in a large jacket and scarf, he bounced on his heels with his hands in his pockets as he waited impatiently for the train to arrive. He had received your text last night- it took him everything in his power not to rush over to the station then and there.
A solid 2 hours in the cold and three cups of coffee later, the large metal beast pulled up, vibrating the tracks and blaring through the cold morning. Around him, trainers and those alike got on and off, fading away into nothing as you appeared.
All it took was one look. Before he knew it, you were running full force, tossing your bag to his left before launching yourself into his ready arms. Your lips tasted like coffee and donuts, and your cheeks were flushed from the cold.
“Gordie.” You breathed when you two finally pulled away, smiling so big it rivaled the sun. Gordie felt his heart soar. “I’m home.”
“Welcome home, rockstar.” He let out a choked laugh, kissing you again and again.
I hope this was good!

What is the greatest battle accomplishment your muse has achieved?
Without a doubt, her Championship match: first against Wallace, and followed by Steven. The battle went on for 53 minutes and was broadcast live to local territories. Later uploads to Mewtube have amassed a quarter of a billion views (a resurgence of popularity followed her return to Hoenn). May doesn't return to it often, mainly because it's excruciatingly long, but she remembers it vividly enough!
Her battle against Mustard was also one for the books. No one outside of the dojo that day was witness, but those present were given a spectacle they're unlikely to forget.
Does your muse play any Pokémon sports?
Aside from the Pokéathlon, May is -huge- into Contests. Though it used to be cause for embarrassment, she's matured into owning her accomplishments in the field. Each of her contenders has reached the Master Rank in their respective categories:
Beautiful: Anya, Cleopatra, Monet Clever: Anya, Salem Cool: Anya, Matangi, Salem Cute: Anya, Salem, Felix Tough: Anya, Vanhi
Does your muse play with their Pokémon?
Absolutely, depending (they cover a pretty wide spectrum between 'cute/cuddly gremlin' to 'absolute terror')!
Most of her lot are competitive, so "play" can quite literally mean beating the shit out of each other (affectionately); that's not always the case though. More leisurely activities are most common. Several of her partymates enjoy things like hide & seek, skipping stones, chasing/play wrestling. Those closer to May's intellect will even play cards with her (Vega and Anya demolish her at chess).

@jaksrpbox / @bemuseing asked: 'Describe Me!' for rengoku <3 / description meme
You hear him before you see him. Kyou's laughter is a loud, booming thing, even early in the morning when most of the Dojo is still half-asleep and listening to the gentle chirps of the Fletchling outside, and you waste no time in rushing out to meet him. Your arm links around his, and not even a second later you're both running, your steps echoing through the halls like thunder rolling above a storm.
                     ❝ Come on, Kyou! Let's go, let's go! ❞
You dash out into the sprawling lands of the Isle of Armor, sprinting towards the horizon until you're far enough away that your training won't be interrupted. You've always liked battling Kyou. His team are strong, like yours, and you share the same intense passion for battle. Battles can last for over an hour when you're both really going at it, and that's without factoring in playtime or the revival periods or getting something to eat. The day's gone before you know it.
As the sun starts to set beneath the clouds, you find yourself reluctant to leave the wilderness. Your bags are already packed and sitting neatly on your bed, your goodbyes to Master Mustard and Miss Honey already rehearsed and ready to go. Mum will be coming to pick you up soon, taking you back to Postwick to meet with Mr. Rose, and then...
You tell him about the Gym Challenge, about the Chairman's endorsement and confidence in you. You tell him about your dream to make it all the way to the finals and win. He claps you on the back with almost enough force to bowl you over, tells you that he knows you'll do it.
As you walk back, arms linked once more, he tells you about Laceleaf Town, about the Rengoku family dojo and their mastery of Inferno. You promise that you'll go, some day; that today won't be the last time you train together. The smile he gives you in response feels bright enough to illuminate the entire Isle.

SwSh 32 and 33 Synopsis
So, the scanlation team’s been busy with irl stuff and we haven’t been able to release scanlations of swsh chapters for a couple of months. I feel bad about it, so I figured I could at least share a synopsis of the past two chapters so we’re all kind of on the same page before chapter 34 comes out. Under the cut, so you can avoid spoilers if you’d rather wait and read it for yourself.
Chapter 32
Bede, Marnie, and Hop are on the train to the Crown Tundra when they’re approached by Peonia, who begs for their help because someone is chasing after her. The rivals each give her a piece of clothing for her to use to disguise herself just in time for Peony to walk into their train car. He asks them if they’ve seen Nia and Hop says she’s in the next car, so he moves on. After he leaves, Nia explains that she wanted to go explore the Max Lair, but her dad invited himself along. He put together his own plan for an adventure that they could do together, but she’s not interested in it. Bede wishes he could go on an adventure with Chairman Rose like that, so when Peony returns to the car looking for Nia, Bede rips off her disguise, earning him an intense side-eye from Hop. Peony leaves with his daughter, and Marnie muses that she feels bad for her.
Upon arriving in the Crown Tundra, the rivals run into Peony and Nia again, and Marnie makes a request of Peony: if one of them beats him in a battle, he has to let Nia explore the tundra freely. He accepts the challenge, and Bede volunteers to fight, but Marnie says he’ll just lose on purpose. So, she sends out her Morgrem to face his Copperajah, and they start to battle.
Meanwhile, over at the Master Dojo, the residents of the dojo are shocked to discover that Schilly and Marvin aren’t new students. They apologize for jumping to conclusions, and Schilly explains what they’re looking for. Mustard recognizes the name Soudo, but Sou – who’s peeking on the conversation – gestures for Mustard not to reveal him. Honey invites them to treat the dojo like their second home, while Mustard asks Schilly to take care of Kubfu. She declines, however, since she already has six Pokémon. So, Mustard calls out to Sou and tells him to take care of Kubfu instead. Sou reluctantly reveals himself, side-eying Mustard, who grins and throws up peace signs.
Schilly and Marvin are delighted to have found Sou already, and Schilly starts planning for their next steps – finding the rusted weapons and an antidote for the Gym Leaders’ poison. However, Sou is still reluctant to come with her. He apologizes for preventing them from protecting the region, and Schilly dismisses his behavior as an effect of the poison. However, Sou reminds her that he gets hyperfocused when it comes to gear, being unable to see anything beyond what he wants to do, so he probably would’ve done the same thing even without the poison. Schilly says that she knows that he gets tunnel vision when it comes to gear, she’s seen him do it, but she never said anything about his behavior – even if it was something she didn’t like him doing – because she didn’t want to make him unhappy. So, as his friend, she apologizes for not speaking up when she thought he was doing something bad. Sou starts to argue with her, but Mustard interrupts, reminding them that their goal is to calm Eternatus and restore peace to Galar, and they can save the self-reflection for afterwards.
Checking her tablet, Schilly notices that she has a message from Oleana – one of the ingredients they need for the antidote to Eternatus’s poison is “sap harvested on a foggy morning” from the Isle of Armor, so she’d like them to acquire some. Hyde comments that there was nectar in the antidote they gave to Sou, but Marvin says that’s different from sap. Klara suggests that they can find the sap in the Forest of Focus, and Avery volunteers to use his psychic powers to search for where to find the sap.
Chapter 33
The chapter begins with Avery showing off his telekinesis to throw a Poké Ball. However, Klara, Schilly, and Marvin aren’t impressed, wounding Avery’s pride. Sou thinks the power has its applications, though, and demonstrates this by having everyone try to catch an Abra sitting in the grass a long way away. Only Avery’s telekinetically thrown Poké Ball travels far enough to catch the Abra. Sou points out that being able to catch or battle a Pokémon from any distance is a useful skill, which makes Avery incredibly happy. With that demonstration of his abilities over, Avery says they should rest for the night, and pray there’s fog in the morning.
Upon returning to the dojo, Sou’s long hair gets caught in the front door, leading Schilly to decide they need to do something about it. Since there’s no salon on the island, Klara volunteers to style Sou’s hair for him. Klara styles his hair into a bun, which Schilly is so impressed with that she asks Klara to do it for her, too. While Schilly is getting her hair done, Mustard offers them outfits to suit their new hairstyles – dojo uniforms to wear while they’re on the island. He offers a uniform to Marvin, too, but Marvin declines.
Meanwhile, in the Crown Tundra, Marnie is getting flattened by Peony because of the type disadvantage, which Nia and Bede are lowkey judging her for. However, she reveals that she was waiting for Morgrem to gain enough experience to evolve into Grimmsnarl, allowing it to throw off Copperajah’s attack and defeat it with Hammer Arm. Peony accepts his defeat and allows Nia to head off to the Max Lair, and she promises to come back and hang with him once she’s done. Peony comments that after seeing how happy she is, he’s glad he lost, but he laments that the exploration tour he planned for the two of them is gonna go to waste. Bede volunteers to do the tour with him in her place, and Hop reminds him that they have an important mission to do. However, Marnie says that it’d be a good idea to go with him on the tour, since they don’t know anything about the tundra or where to start searching, and this tour gives them an excuse to explore the whole tundra. Bede claims that that was his thinking all along, and Hop is skeptical but agrees to join them. Peony says that they can join him until Nia returns, and they head to Freezington, along the way receiving a message from Schilly that she found Sou.
The next morning, Sou and Schilly show off their new haircuts and outfits, and they head out to the Forest of Focus with Marvin, Avery, Klara, and Kubfu. Along the way, Schilly reports that she sent her Vikavolt Drone to scout for the rusted weapons, but it hasn’t found anything yet. To their delight, the forest is foggy when they arrive, and Schilly asks Avery to locate the tree they can get the sap from. As he stalls to hide the fact that he was bluffing when he said he knew how to find the sap, he gets jumped by a swarm of Poison-type Pokémon running out of the forest. Sou and Schilly start fighting them off, and Kubfu joins in. However, Klara jumps in to stop the fighting, getting punched in the face by Kubfu for her trouble. Klara explains that the wild Pokémon probably weren’t trying to attack them, they were running away from something that’s not good for them. Schilly surmises that it might be what they’re looking for, so she uses her Vikavolt Drone to scan the area and figure out where the Pokémon were coming from. Meanwhile, Kubfu starts moping because it got carried away and messed up, and Klara and Avery empathize. Schilly leads the gang into the forest, and they observe that a bunch of poisoned Pokémon are heading the same way. The Pokémon are licking a particular tree, so Schilly scans the sap on the tree and has Klara send the data to Miss Poison. Upon getting confirmation that this is the sap they’re looking for, Schilly uses her Vikavolt Drone to extract the sap from the tree. However, as soon as she takes the filled bottle of sap out of the drone, Kubfu leaps up and steals it from her…

Can people in Galar just become Trainers at any given time, even when the Gym Challenge isn’t currently in session? Because for the purposes of Masters, I’d think Victor caught a Wooloo that rolled into him or a Rookiedee that tried to steal his food, and he decided not to wait for the Gym Challenge to become a proper Trainer and just… went on a journey for the sake of a journey.
Hi, there anon!
Trainers in Galar can definitely become trainers before the gym challenge. In fact, there's plenty of evidence in-game that suggest that most trainers do not start being trainer at the same time as the gym challenge. If you take a look at the champion cup's rematch, most of the gym challengers look to be older teens and young adults, with one elderly man. Marnie is mentioned by Piers to have gotten Morpeko awhile aback, and Bede was sent off to a trainer's school before the gym challenge. Even Hop has a Wooloo before Victor/Gloria has a Pokemon. And Leon is at least somewhat implied to have gotten Charmander while training at the Dojo prior to the gym challenge.
Given how tough the gym leaders are in Galar and the fact that everything is televised, it makes more sense that most trainers have some experience with Pokemon before stepping into the spotlight, with trainers starting in the gym challenge with little training prior (with Victor/Gloria and Hop) being the exception rather than the norm. In fact, this is why Leon is initially so hesitant to endorse the player and Hop, not because he thought they'd be bad trainers but rather because he didn't want to throw them to the wolves so soon.
The real question is, what are the options in Galar to do outside of the gym challenge? The only place we have that we know trains trainers is the Dojo that Mustard runs. We never see a typical trainer's school in Galar to indicate where Bede was sent. However, we do know that there is a minor division of the Pokemon league and that there are leaders for them. This is speculation, but it's likely that during the off-season, the minor league holds tournaments and mock gym battles. A setup like this would definitely benefit new trainers to get used to traveling and having battles in stadiums while also keeping the minor gym leaders in shape in preparation for the ranking tournament.
Now, as far as what Victor may get in Pokemas that will definitely be interesting to see. Since Gloria takes up the protagonist role for masters Victor definitely will have a lot more wiggle room with his backstory. I still see him getting one of the starters (even though we know Leon gets the third starter in canon) but he can definitely have more than one sync pair and maybe his starter will have been Rookidee (Corviknight by the time he appears).
