...and the trees gathered 'round the old forest god to listen. And he spoke, in creeks, cracks, and the rustling of ancient branches. The lord of the forest imparted his knowledge to them all, for his time was short. He was dying. In fact, all the gods of nature were fading away fast. The Earth had begun its last chapter. All of the old magic had been stunted and pruned by the human infestation. The lord of the forest apologized with his last breath, and all became quiet. Even the birds paused their song, sensing the loss. Is it too late for this forsaken place? What have we done?

Dolly Sods and the adjacent Flat Rock and Roaring Plains sprawl across a rugged plateau at the edge of the Allegheny Front, which drains much of the moisture from passing clouds. The water drains poorly on the plateau, resulting in sphagnum bogs that host a variety of plants and animals uniquely adapted to the cool, acidic environment.
From top: Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), which in combination with blueberry, huckleberry and minniebush forms impenetrable thickets along the edges of the bogs; spoonleaf sundew (Drosera intermedia), also known as spatulate-leaved sundew, one of two species of carnivorous sundew to grow here; small cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos), also known as bog cranberry, whose tiny flowers have strongly recurved petals; possumhaw viburnum (Viburnum nudum), also known as wild raisin due to its vibrantly-hued fruits in the fall; canaan fir (Abies balsamea var. phanerolepis), a recognized subspecies of balsam fir known from only a few locations in West Virginia and Virginia; and bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), which grows prolifically in the dappled sunlight along trail edges.

In The Stream At Dawn
.
The morning fog spoke to me
Trickling water interpreted the words
A crow explained the fine details
While the wind carried it all to me
.
Tears welled up in my eyes
Comprehending the deep pain
So I dropped onto my knees in the water
And apologized to the Earth
.
For all the harm we have done
For what can't be undone
For what is already gone
And what will disappear next
.
I am so very sorry, very sorry.

Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) ruled on the expansive plains of Dolly Sods today. It’s impossible for me to describe how intensely beautiful this display is in mid-June. In places, undulating waves of pink and white flowers extended to the visible horizon. On top of the mountain laurel, it was a gorgeous day for a long hike in the wilderness, with the cool-crispness of an early spring or late fall day and wispy clouds vaulting overhead in a brisk, buffeting wind. In the deep, rich woods off Red Creek Canyon, exquisite mountain wood sorrel (Oxalis montana) was in bloom, and the summer boletes were already out of the ground.

Lessons from Fall
Even beyond peak, the colors were bright in spots in the Adirondack Mountains. Believe it or not, fall is half over already. For a while, we thought summer would never end with the oppressive heat and humidity and the lack of sufficient rain in many regions of the U.S. and globally. But clearly, autumn has now settled in for the duration. The first widespread frosts and snows for the northern…

At 3,848 feet, the summit of Breathed Mountain is around 1,000 feet shy of West Virginia's highest point, Spruce Knob. That said, it's still not a bad spot to peep some fall colors...
