i like writing all the angst and smut which usually comes in the middle for me 😅 but i do also like a nice tight ending and getting the payoff!

14: how do you write emotional scenes? Do you ever feel what the characters feel? Do you draw from personal experiences?

i don't feel very emotionally literate most of the time, so i definitely do stray into "using fanfic to process difficult emotions"!! even if that's just, putting blorbos through horrible circumstances while i'm having a bad time for an unrelated reason just to like, catharsis my way through (which is what i did when i wrote "hours")

UHH not very formulaicly??? lots of discussion of hands and lips and tongues, and possibly too much introspection 😅

whimpering has to be well used if it's going in a smut fic and so often with wylan it is not 😌

What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

OF ALL TIME??? this is tough lol I have many that are near and dear to my heart for various reasons, but I'm going to break with my usual choice and say I enjoyed writing dark tides. I wasn't sure at the time of writing if I could commit to writing out what was essentially a poorly-concealed oedipal complex in a fucking MARVEL film but then I did and I'm glad I did.

Favorite pairing you wrote for this year?

I promise I'm not shitting you but I fucking LOVED writing Kaz x Poppy earlier this year. I think Kaz x Nina is a close second, though.

Your favorite character to write this year?

Evelyn Wang from EEAAO! God, I identify with her... too much.

Inej in jealous was a bit of a challenge. Fun, but not easy.

3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?

i find the most uncomfortable position to sit in, usually with my laptop burning up on my crossed legs, acquire a beverage, open a doc, stare at it for 10 to 20 minutes, shuffle some sentences and word choices around, get upset that i don't know where the story is going, give up. it is cursed for obvious reasons.

6. What is your darkest fear about writing?

i’m vain, always have been. probably a symptom of being praised too much as a child (the pretty gifted one etc etc) but it means i’m afraid of writing stories people don’t like, stories that aren’t beautiful and profound. ironically, this probably has the effect of making my writing overworked and try hard. my perfectionism slows me down but i’m afraid of falling short. of what, i’m not sure.

7. What is your deepest joy about writing?

easily, providing other people with a vision of themselves that feels true and good. whether they’re folks like me (poc and queer) or not. if i have captured some essence, some quality they recognise about themselves and see truthfully and positively reflected back from my story—that’s it. i don’t need anything else. it could be a line or a moment or a scene. i want to bring joy in a space where so often there is only pain or nothingness.

13. What is a subject matter that is incredibly difficult for you write about? What is easy?

subjects that are enjoyable but emotionally taxing for me: gender and race, cause… well, y’all get it.

something else that’s difficult for me to write about because i don’t know where i stand and i like to write from a position of confidence, is the end of the world. my main original fiction project novel takes place after the end of the world and tries to posit some vision of a flourishing future but—my thesis statement/moral of the story is all muddled because i don’t know… what role does violence have in this future? how do we assimilate/navigate difference? what happens when different view points clash to the point of no return? is failure on a large scale inevitable? what do trees know that we don’t? is intelligence the problem? etc etc etc i get tied up in knots.

love, i find easy to write about. i’m not sure how good i’m at it in real life. it’s scary for me, i’ve been let down a lot, but the idea of it, stories about it are my bread and butter.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

weeeelllll the main thing i’m tryna work on right now is my novel about the end of the world and community and interspecies flourishing and it takes place in a future we can’t quite see yet in which the revolution happened without us (humans). the forest had enough. now, a few thousand survivors remain and they’re trying to come to terms with the aftermath. this is about cohabitation and compromise and survival but the survivors don’t all understand the stakes. there are some who’re willing to fight for the community—the forest and humans and the fungi and everyone—and some who just want to burn the world down for spite. it’s about language and how we understand each other across difference and it’s about love. between two and three and a hundred people.

there’s a love triangle that becomes a triad because one of them is in love with both the others and the others tolerate each other but love the first. one of them is what i want in life and the other is what i need and the first is a self-insert cause it’s my first novel and that’s how things are done.

it’s the biggest pain in my ass but i love it very much.

Do you respond to comments? Yes! But like with everything else I take forever! Why or why not? You did me the courtesy of feeding me, I might as well feed you back.

What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? I haven’t finished any of my long fics but I can already tell you they’re inching towards idealism because something something I believe in humanity’s inherent capacity for kindness and the lives of the characters I write about are canonically headed for disaster so I like giving them a bit of happiness in my works… BUT that said, my original fiction tends to be pretty ironically tragic and I’m currently working on an ASOIAF Aemond fic that I’m considering ending in true GRRM fashion.

What’s the fic you've written with the happiest ending? Can’t spoil xD everything is still ongoing. But as far as finished fic, I think Due to the Dead.

Do you write crossovers? I don’t particularly like crossovers but… once I’m bit by a bug I listen to no reason, so I’m not ruling it out.

Have you ever received hate on a fic? Nope, but I have a pretty small audience and have written few fics so it’s probably statistics.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? OF COURSE! I’ve done mostly het but like writing yaoi too (someone said AemondXLuke and I am INTRIGUED), I kinda really wanna try my hand at yuri and I tend to solve everything via threesome so… also, hi I’m Irene and I’m a monsterfucker.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of.

Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes and no. So I am a fandom crone and my first fandom as far as fic writing goes was actually Saint Seiya. I had to translate my own fic for that. (Fun fact: I am an IRL translator)

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Not yet but if I ever get down to ficifying my RPs with @hom3landr I might!

What are your writing weaknesses? I. DON’T. FINISH. MY. SHIT. Also I take forever to write.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? That most people don’t get how language or fucking bilingualism works. But I do like gratuitous French… and Valyrian. I also really like when one character explains to another that there’s no exact translation for a word or turn of phrase. Language reflects culture <3

What was the first fandom you wrote for? Already said it, long time ago, Saint Seiya.

“He’s a fucking skiv,” Wylan spits, words slurred together like messy, melting paint. “Fuckin’—” He hiccups “— dick. ‘N I don’ miss’im.”  That’s a lie, and he knows it, and if he’s honest the tears in his eyes probably give away the fact he doesn’t mean it to the person kneeling beside him. Wylan’s body lurches, swaying like a reed caught in the undertow of the canal. He thinks he’s going to throw up soon.

What's your absolute favorite works you read this year?

I have two!! They’re some of the only long fics I’ve read this year and they just blew me away. The first is Runner by Jessepinwheel. It’s a The LEGO Movie fanfic which is an AU where Good Cop lives instead of Bad Cop and then goes “what if he got sent back in time and had to try and save Bad Cop”. It’s a brilliant fic and really explores morality and the consequences of Good Cop’s actions both in the present and past. I read it during May and started sobbing during the climax so you know it’s good.

My other fic is from me to you by microcosmo. It’s a Pokemon Sword and Shield fic. It takes place in an au where Leon has been distant from his family for the last few years following becoming champion. This all changes however when their mother dies and Leon is given custody of Hop, forcing Hop to leave his life behind and move in with a brother who he never really knew. There’s a heavy exploration of their bonds and their relationship and how the title of champion impacts Leon and Hop in their daily life. Here’s a snippet of it that I adore:

He offers condolences instead, because it’s the very least he can do for a brother who was never really a brother, but someone he shared a mother with nonetheless.

Did any line/passage stick with you after you read it?

I would say the line I just put, but I’ll do something else lol

He's alive.

But soon, he won't be.

He takes a deep breath, counts to ten, lets it out.

He gets it now. He isn't meant to take the Piece of Resistance and stop the Kragle, after all.

He's meant to die.

The realization settles on him gently, and he takes it in, breath by breath. It feels like clarity.

This quote from Runner haunts me. I think about it once a month at LEAST.

“Wishful thinking,” Robotnik echoed. Stone had wished to be his friend? That was perhaps even more strange. He thought about that – about Stone wishing, and his old bitter certainty that nobody would ever have that wish. “I wish we had been friends too,” he said.

He felt the regret of a missed opportunity – and that angered him, because in his current form there should be no opportunity that he wasn’t able to take advantage of.

But of course being friends with this creature now was out of the question, given their disparate situations. “In this moment I think I almost wish I were human again,” he mused, “So that I could experience a friendship with you.”

This quote from Welcome To The New Age by LMT is what I think of every time I think of Stobotnik

Stone understood that he would no longer be property of the government once he was assigned to him. Instead, he would be Robotnik’s and Robotnik’s alone, no longer his own, yet nothing to Robotnik either. To the Doctor, he was an object to use and dispose of as he saw fit, and most days, even less.

Do you have any works you think are required reading for (fandom)?

YES. Runner is most definitely the fic for The LEGO Movie, but I have a few others. You know, I won’t miss you when you’re gone by @leftofrevolution was the first fic I ever read for the fandom and it made me love the characters so much. Plus literally any SpellCleaver fic for the Star Wars fandom

Biggest surprise for you as a reader this year?

can I just say “read and loved The LEGO Movie fanfics” because I did NOT see that one coming

4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?

This was a HARD one since I couldn't think of a single word that evokes such a strong reaction per se, but I guess hunger is a good one because it's so wonderfully evocative and speaks to something that is very universal.

6. What is your darkest fear about writing?

That I used to be MUCH better at it a few years ago (words came easier, I wrote faster and had a more of a creative spark), and that I've lost all of that skill permanently.

I guess also concerns that my writing even now is really not as good as I think it is, but I assume every writer has that fear.

13. What is a subject matter that is incredibly difficult for you write about? What is easy?

I think anything super violent is difficult to write for me. Fear, desire, and longing all come pretty easily.

27. Who is the most stressful character you’ve ever written? Why?

Probably Evelyn Wang from everything everywhere all at once, because I see a lot of myself in her, and yet she is not a particularly sympathetic character most (if not all) the time.

39. What keeps you writing when you feel like giving up?

Knowing that at the end I'll be proud of how it all came together (as it always does).
