tips for writing muslim characters

except im a muslim, born and raised

dont mix it up with arab characters, yes a muslim can be arab and muslim but theres a difference. the link to my post abt writing arabs is here

first and foremost, not all muslims are arabs, and not all arabs are muslims. yes, most terminology and the holy book is in arabic, but that doesnt mean its exclusively arabs

indonesia (not an arab country) has the highest population of muslims worldwide

the arab country with the most christians is egypt, but the arab country with the highest population of christians is lebanon 

not all practicing muslim women wear hijab (some extremely religious women might not wear a hijab)

five prayers a day: fajr (before sunrise), zuhr (midday), asr (afternoon), maghreb/maghrib (sunset), ishaa (nighttime)

call to prayer is known as 'azan', you can listen to it on youtube

muslims use the lunar calendar (known as the hijri calendar), which also has 12 months but its around two weeks shorter than the gregorian calendar. most people only remember the ninth month: ramadan

fasting consists of not eating/drinking from fajr until maghrib. you stop as soon as the azan for fajr sounds, and you can start again as soon as the azan for maghrib sounds. you fast for the entire month of ramadan, but its also encouraged to fast on mondays, thursdays, and the 14th/15th/16th days of each month of the hijri calendar

allah isnt the name of god. allah is the arabic word for 'god'

women dont have to cover up completely until puberty, athough some girls cover up before then and other women dont cover up at all

women can be religious and not cover up

the word 'hijab' doesnt show up in the quran, its 'khimar'. hijab is to cover up completely, not just hair. you cant wear a headscarf with a short sleeved shirt

men have to cover up too. from their navel to their knees absolutely has to be covered up, and (in most islamic cultures, not necessarily exactly religious) they cover up their chests as well 

also men are told to avert their gazes from women more than women are told to cover up. youd find a lot of men in muslim countries not looking up from the floor when walking, especially in areas w a lot of women

kids by the age of eight can usually recite at least four chapters from the quran (the first one and the last three, mostly. it doesnt matter if theyre not arab)

theres only one version of the quran. the same copy thats existed for 1400 years and millions of people have memorized it

on that note, people who memorize the quran are called hafiz, and there isnt a particular age. theres a three year old hafiz and a woman who didnt memorize it until age eighty three

there are two different sources for islamic law: the quran (holy book), and hadith (quotes of the prophet). dua' is completely different, its a prayer used to ask help from god, but unlike the five prayers, it doesnt really require a specific ritual. you just sit, face the direction of mecca, and say the dua'

superstitions are haram, but muslims do believe in black magic (its sihr in arabic and its one of the biggest sins) and djinn (there are djinn muslims but theyre widely regarded somewhat like monsters who encourage/help you to do black magic)

allahu akbar means "god is greater" or "god is the greatest". it isnt used as a signal to blow people up, and it isnt a term used purely by islam extremists

assalamu aleikum / waaleikum assalam mean, respectively, "peace be upon you" and "and peace be upon you too" basically just our way of just saying "hi" along with the reply

subhanallah means "glory be to god" usually when witnessing a miracle or when amazed

mashaallah - there arent any exact english equivalents but it means "what god wills". usually for compliments or to protect someone from evil eye

insha'allah - simply "god willing" but we use this when talking about the future (like "will you come to school?" "insha'allah" or "we'll get the gift, right?" "insha'allah"). can be replaced by the lesser used "bi'ithn illah"

alhamdu lillah - "praise be to god" or "thanks be to god. used in the way you might imagine, but also as a way to express that youre doing fine. "how are you doing today, sister?" "alhamdu lillah" (also when finishing a meal / finishing drinking water)

astaghfir ullah - "i seek forgiveness from god" whenever we see someone do something haram or when we ourselves do something haram and wish to repent

bismillah - "in the name of god" we use this whenever we begin something. a lot of arab literature starts with this. every chapter im the quran starts with this. every meal starts with saying this before eating

Be women of the akhira. Do things with the intention of it benefiting you in the next life. Sacrifice for the Ummah. My beautiful sister, we don’t live in the golden ages so we shouldn’t live a life as if we do. Life isn’t just about girl parties, shopping and cute dates with spouse.

My precious sister in Islam, your role is big and your responsibilities are many. There are a plethora of captives and a shortage of those willing to free them. Raise up young men and women of Tawheed. Usool ath- Thalatha has dwindled from us and the youth. Memorize it and teach it the young to live upon it. Our elders, May Allah grant them a long life full of good deeds, are unaware of the plight of the Muslims. Where is your beautiful handwriting in making leaflets to spread awareness? The deviants and slanderers have increased and are poisoning the masses. Learn the deen and educate the new generation of muslimaat. Sell your jewelry for ransom. Spend from your money in charity. Give up some sleep for tahajjud.

My beloved sister, your husband is not just for you. As much as you adore him, he is for the Ummah and should be encouraged to get dirty in the path of Allah. Don’t stop him or discourage him. Make dua for him, motivate him, prepare him accordingly. If you hold him back from his duties, then you have deprived the captives of their freedom and Islam of spreading far and wide. If you love him for the sake of Allah, stand with him in the path of Allah ﷻ. Encourage even the men in your family to get dusty for the sake of Allah.

My sister, keep company with the sisters on the same path. You will only flock regularly with those who are the same as you. You will become like those who you are around mostly. Righteous, pious akhawaat should be your company. Gatherings of knowledge and the remembrance of Allah should be your dates with them. If they advise you, keep them close. If you sin and they encourage you, they don’t truly love you. If they only care about the glitter and glamor of this dunya, it’ll only pull you towards that and away from the ultimate goal.

Focus and stay on track. Learn skills to benefit the Ummah. Have very high aspirations because it only befits the people of the best nations. Make continuous istighfaar and rush to the good deeds. Be mindful of Allah in private so it translate to that in public. Ask Allah for a soft heart that weeps at disobedience and sinning. Build up a heart that is so attached to Allah it weeps for missing acts of sunnah. Think about the captives and the oppressed muslimeen. When is the last time you shed tears because of them ? May those tears be a witness for you on the day of judgement.

The path isn’t aesthetic nor is it easy. It is not smooth and it never ends until the Angel of death takes our soul. Any khayr you put forth is not because of your actions or your intellect. Rather it is from the mercy Allah has bestowed upon you . Ask Allah for steadfastness. Constantly clean off you slate with istighfaar and keep the mindest that your life is for the sake of Allah and you must live accordingly.

You are the backbone of the Ummah Ukhti. You are a precious jewel and you have an honorable status. Be a women like how the sahabiyat were. Be a woman who corrects what others have corrupted.

May Allah aid you and honor you. May Allah increase us all in thabat and make us from the forerunners of the deen.

Allah calls Himself As-Samad— The Eternal, Satisfier of Needs, the Refuge and Absolute— on one occasion in the Quran. As-Samad is the unchangeable one on whom the entire creation depends. He is the one unaffected by any circumstance and the only one able to fulfil all needs in the most perfect way,  without Himself being in need of anything or anyone!

 The Eternal, Everlasting Refuge, Satisfier of All Needs

Samad comes from the root saad-meem-daal, which points  to two main meanings. The first main meaning is to reach or attain, or to aim toward something. The second main meaning is to turn to and to need, and the third is to remain unchanged and unaffected. The fourth main meaning is to be everlasting and eternal.

This root appears just once in the Quran, as the noun samad. The example is al-samadu (“The Eternal, Absolute”).

Linguistically, samad means something that is not affected by circumstances or something that is solid. Sumood refers to the concept of being firm and steadfast.

As-Samad is the the One who is not changed nor affected by anything in the creation, He is the eternal and absolute refuge to seek and depend on for all needs and desires.

As-Samad Himself says: Say, ‘He is Allah , [who is] One, Allah , the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.’ [Quran, 112:1-4]

A description of Allah

The only place in the Quran Allah ‘azza wa jall calls Himself As-Samad is in Surah Al-Ikhlaas; the virtuous surah mentioned in the authentic hadith in Muslim to equal one-third of the Quran.  This short, but amazingly beautiful and profound surah is a description of Allah Himself,  His Oneness, His samad’yyah and His incomparability.  Allah revealed this surah as a powerful answer to the people of Makkah who asked the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to describe His Lord and His ‘lineage.’

What is ikhlaas (sincerity)? It is doing deeds purely for Him and to seek His pleasure, because He is Al-Ahad, the One and Unique. It is turning to Him for our needs and desires and desire Him only, because He is As-Samad, The Eternal and Satisfier of Needs, and it is to live by the fact that there is no one equal to Him in any of His attributes!

How can you live by this name?

1. Recite  and live by Surah al-Ikhlaas.
Recite Surah Al-Ikhlaas often to gain reward, but not only that; learn to understand each word and live by the names of Allah mentioned in it. Love to recite this surah and talk about it to others as you are describing your Lord. Learn how to correctly recite it and convey it to at least one other person and teach your children the history and/or tafseer (explanation) of this virtuoussurah in which As-Samad is mentioned in order to instil love of Allah in their hearts.

2. Realize your dependence on Him.

 One of the meanings of As-Samad is the One who is independent and self-sufficient. If you look at a manager, for example, one who has a high position with authority over others, it still takes one note from his superiors to end his career. This person is not samad. Then look at what we need tu survive as human beings; air, water, food, and even love. Why do we often act like as if we are independent? Especially during good times when we are healthy and wealthy we tend to forget we are even dependant on As-Samad for the strap of our shoe. So remind yourself daily that you are dependent on Him.

3. Call upon Him.

Here’s a beautiful supplication the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam used to make as part of the morning:
“يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ أَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ وَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ”.
O Ever Living One, O Eternal One, by Your mercy I call on You to set right all my affairs. Do not place me in charge of my soul even for the blinking of an eye (i.e. a moment). [Al-Haakim, saheeh] Memorize this dua’ and say it with true desire, fully realizing your dependence on As-Samad!

4. Desire As-Samad.
Turn to As-Samad in good and bad times and rely on Him, resting assured He is the Eternal Refuge and the One who will satisfy your needs in the way He knows is best for you. If you truly believe in As-Samad, your strongest desire will be to meet Him and your only fear will be that of His displeasure. So strive to be a real servant of Allah. The disbeliever is a slave of his desires, or of fashion, his belly, and his money. So beg Him to decrease the love for this world in your heart, including love of being praised by people, and replace it with a firm desire for His pleasure alone.

Wallahu ta’alaa ‘alem

O Allah, As-Samad, we know that You are the only Eternal Refuge. Make us realize we need you at all times and aid us to be of those who turn to You only for our needs.  Adorn us with a strong desire to please You alone, ameen!

A powerful dua for happiness:

Abdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “No person (“no believer” in another report) suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ ، وَابْنُ عَبْدِكَ ، وَابْنُ أَمَتِكَ ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ ، سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ ، أَوْ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي ، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي ، وَجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي ، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي

(O Allah, I am your slave, the son of your slave and the son of your maid-slave. Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask you by every Name belonging to You, which You have Named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur’ān the life of my heart and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety) except that Allah will remove his sorrow and replace it with happiness.”

They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, should we memorize these phrases (of the supplication)?” He responded, “Yes, whoever hears these words should memorize them.”

I tried every tactic my nine-year-old brain could muster, but nothing worked. Gone were all my clothes; pants were no longer allowed. Now, I was to cover every inch of my body but my face and hands. This was the moment that the final nail was hammered into the coffin of my childhood.

I felt so awkward, so uncomfortable, so hot, in those stupid oversized clothes. My whole body was suffocating. My head throbbed, and my skin oozed sweat from every pore. And every day, they told me that dressing like the kuffar was evil and that I would go to hell if I dressed that way. Besides, when the Caliphate rises, if you're not wearing hijab, how will you be distinguished from the nonbelievers? If you look like them, you’ll be killed like them.

Ah, the Caliphate. Always about the Caliphate. Every Friday khutba (sermon) there was the declaration that Muslims will succeed in turning the whole planet Islamic. Every Friday, we chant “Ameen” as the Imam makes a dua, plea to Allah, that the Caliphate rises soon and that we eradicate nonbelievers. Then there will be peace. It is why when ISIS rose in Iraq and Syria so many people from around the world-inexplicable people like university students from affluent families in Western countries-decided to join ISIS then burn their passports. The response from pundits was to assume that these people were all recruited online. That’s some pretty quick recruiting! The reason why all those young and women so quickly joined ISIS was because, just like me, they were raised hearing about how it was their duty to join the ummah against the nonbelievers. They were taught that it was their duty to join the Caliphate when it rises. Probably, like me, they didn't really think they would ever see the day, but then there it was. An Islamic State. As soon as it existed, these people already knew what they had to do. It had been drilled into them since childhood.

My mother used to sit me down and make me promise that I would be willing to kill nonbelievers when the time came.

“Yes, sure,” I would respond in monotone.

There was always some sort of coercion going on. I was forced to pray, to memorize Quran, to promise to kill my friends, and of course to wear this hideous hijab. Every conceivable method of coercion was deployed—fear, a desire to please Allah, emotional blackmail. It was all unending. Only obedient Muslim daughters can go to Heaven. If you dress like the kuffar, you are choosing hell. That is the self-hate that I was filled with from the age of nine.

i had this lil project for ramadan. i was supposed to decorate a corner of our house for my lil brother and put duas in balloons that he can pop and memorize each dua for each day

this project was given to me last tuesday/wednesday, but since i was sick the entire week, i decided to start it on sunday. BIG mistake 😭

sooo the deadline was sunday and at 14:22 i decided to buy the stuff i needed but i ended up doing some last minute ramadan shopping w my mum and we came back at 19:30 😭 THEN i had to eat food and take a shower and go taraweeh, and then i had to go STRAIGHT to bed which meant i couldnt start decorating 😭

BUT we still have some time b4 iftaar SOOO i can do it insha allah (cutting and tracing shapes is NOT fun yall omds 😭)

wait put duas in balloons to pop and memorise each day that's the cutest thing i've ever heard 😭😭 also the last minute ramadan shopping is so true im so glad i didn't go bc they spent a solid 4 hours in the grocery store like 😭😭

DUA LIPA - "TRAINING SEASON"

Leah Isobel: Every time I try to write this blurb, I stare at a blank screen for 30 minutes before closing the page. I start with how the instrumental choices here invoke classic pop forebears -- flamenco guitars that, in this context, feel like Madonna; descending piano lines that recall ABBA -- and I come up short. I start with her affected enunciation, leaning into the simulated emotion ("I try to see my lovers in a gühd light") and the, uh, being-British ("I hope it hits me like an aurrow") that are her two trademarks, and I come up short. I start by comparing "Training Season" to "Houdini," which did ultimately grow on me, and I come up short. I just don't have anything to say about this song; it's so taut, so perfectly and unremarkably muscular, that my attention bounces right off. So it's a Dua Lipa single. [5]

Katherine St. Asaph: Dua Lipa is the human incarnation of the [6] to [7] range. Here we have some exotica married to the amusing idea that the main attraction of a vertiginous, libidinous love affair is "conversation overload." I don't know -- that line, and the surrounding lyrics like "he's straight talking to my soul" and "are you somebody who can go there?", come off so dating podcast-brained and thus absolutely safe that they make the instrumental sound overheated and unconvincing. Jackie Powell: Red hair. Leather outfits. Vocal growling -- it happened right here during Dua Lipa’s performance at this year’s BRITs. The disco of “Dance the Night” and Future Nostalgia has officially run its course. While I had questions about how convincing Lipa’s previous single “Houdini” was of her transition into “psychedelic-pop” and “Nineties rock,” Lipa makes a much more cogent argument for her new era with “Training Season.” With main collaborator Caroline Ailin, Lipa constructs an extended metaphor that equates dating to a high-stakes track meet. The influences of Kevin Parker and the Brit pop-rock of Oasis and Blur that Lipa grew up with are much more apparent -- the heart of the song is a conversation between a guitar and a bass during the verses, in addition to a rhythm acoustic guitar that accents the chorus. The bridge -- which is a full bridge, not just a bunch of vocalizations -- is a melodramatic but compelling build that brings everything into complete focus. Her lyrics continue the extended metaphor about running, but finally we’ve arrived at the meet itself, and a classic piano serves as the person who formally tells the runners to take their marks and go. Throughout “Training Season," Dua Lipa wields a type of command that's edgier than her previous work. Interesting doesn’t have to be toxic, as she told Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone, and "Training Season" is her way of responding to the toxic masculinity that has become part of the story of the pop rock music she’s influenced by.  [9]

Ian Mathers: Ah yes, another installment in the Dula Peeps Men (Still) Ain't Shit extended cinematic universe. From magic to sports, where will we go next? Farming? Food preparation? I do wish this was as fun to listen to as "Houdini," though. [6]

Taylor Alatorre: The anti-chemistry between Dua Lipa and her Stereogum-bait producers is even more evident here than on "Houdini," and I find it strangely engrossing, albeit with the balance tipped toward "strangely." Getting spins remains the goal, but there's this constant tug-of-war regarding the best strategy for getting them. Kevin Parker tends toward memorable, if incongruous moments of harmonic tension and build-up, while Danny L Harle is presumably the one responsible for those geometric guitar plucks and the antiseptic bubble that is the chorus. Meanwhile, Dua Lipa is there, plugging her vocals into the the designated slots, feeling less essential to the character of her own song than ever. Such are the dangers of outsourcing your sonic re-invention to the indie gentry. [5]

Andrew Karpan: I’m less of a cynic, and I think the idea of burning through various versions of Kevin Parker’s “Less I Know the Better”-type beat through the gasoline shimmer of hyperpop disco (TM) is as fine enough an idea as any to sell the Dua Lipa project -- the value proposition of which remains largely unchanged, even as it continues to be twisted into slightly fewer, but more deliberate, directions. Her voice can always bend, but always the same way, beating on, against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the ’clurb.  [5]

Dave Moore: I'm not sold yet on Dua Lipa's chorus-agnostic era. As a perennial Lipa skeptic I thought the stylistic recession on "Houdini" worked for her, and I suppose it works about as well here, but the song is bereft of that one's small pleasures. It sounds like she's rubber-cementing random pop hooks together, whereas before it at least sounded like she was using chewing gum.  [6]

Oliver Maier: Something like "Lay All Your Love On Me" is straining to muscle out from beneath Dua's tepid synth-funk, but there's never any real danger it'll break free and liven things up. [4]

Joshua Lu: There's a deadliness to "Training Season" that few artists can execute as well as Dua, with her coquettish voice slinking around you like a snake does its prey. But where the song should grow in intensity, it instead chooses to shrink, and where it should throw a curveball, it instead aims for simplicity — why does the chorus end with such a standard fade-out that resets all of its momentum? The song has all the foundations of a great pop single but is too satisfied with sounding like a decent album track. [5]

TA Inskeep: Her singles have a habit of sneaking up on me. "Levitating" improved by hearing it constantly out in the wild (I don't generally do terrestrial radio, but it was unavoidable). "Cold Heart"'s mash-up eventually sucked me in, and I can't get the short sharp (un)shock of "Houdini" out of my head (it's an [8], just a sparkling pop single). "Training Season" won't join that class, as it has nothing to it but a mild EDM build (ca. 2008) in the chorus that just -- ends. And Lipa sounds even more bored than usual. [4]

Hannah Jocelyn: This would have been a [10] if it came out shortly after Currents; it's still pretty great in 2024, with much more lively production than "Houdini" and genuine risks like that harsh synth towards the end. I'm on board with this direction! [7]

Nortey Dowuona: I wonder if it burns Caroline Polachek up that Dua Lipa will have the big mainstream hit album she will never have and that Danny L Harle is involved with it. I would advise her to listen to Martina Sorbara's 2002 album The Cure for Bad Deeds and accept her niche status instead of fighting it. It might just lead her to eggs over easy. [6]

Dorian Sinclair: So, I read a lot. It’s my primary leisure activity. I read books that profoundly move me, books that open me to whole new ways of thinking, books I immediately recommend to everyone I know. But I also read a steady stream of 5.5/10 genre novels. They’re an important reset between more impactful works: faultlessly competent, reasonably engaging, instantly forgettable. This, to me, is Dua Lipa. [5]

Aaron Bergstrom: Feels like it should work but comes off as listless, directionless, joyless. It's a mild to moderate case of Training Seasonal Affective Disorder. [4]
