Monday, August 8: Dvne, “Court of the Matriarch”
“Court of the Matriarch,” like most of Dvne’s material, was a lengthy and cavernous rumbler that evenly balanced prog, sludge and doom in a single package. By being all of those things, the track occupied its own space and immediately distinguished the Scottish act from its ostensible peers. The prog flourishes gave the doomier elements more atmosphere, while the sludge kept things earthbound. “Court of the Matriarch” was a memorable tune that reflected Dvne’s progression over the preceding years and showed how much they had to offer.
