Mikoto-ing again 🫡 I know I say this like every other post, but I 100% recommend listening to the audio alongside the translation! On one hand the VAs just did an amazing job on this, and on the other hand I also feel like it'll. probably make the switches more obvious than I can convey in text lol

Little disclaimer about the way I translated the DID terminology here: I know the correct term in English is "alter", but in the JP audio they're consistently referred to as "personalities" (人格 / jinkaku) while the closest Japanese equivalent to "alter" seems to be 自我 / jiga, from what I could find. I generally try to stick as closely to the JP terminology with my translations as possible, so I mostly went with "personality". I really don't want to offend anyone here so I hope that's a somewhat okay choice ahshbsdj

M: Umm… (laughs) What are you saying, restricting someone who can’t even hurt a fly?

E: You really aren’t aware, huh…

M: Well, I mean… I do get it. I… go out of control while I’m asleep, right?

E: …

M: The others told me about it. How I got into a fistfight with Koto-chan and whatnot.

E: Seems like it, yeah.

M: I wonder if it’s like… some kind of sleepwalking…? After all, I’ve been losing sleep more and more often recently… Man… It’s really troublesome, isn’t it?

E: Mikoto…

M: The others are all scared of me. I can tell by looking at the way they act. Because I read the room.

E: …

M: It’s pretty tough, isn’t it? (laughs) Ever since I came here, so much has been happening that I don’t understand…

E: … You really… do laugh when you’re suffering, huh?

E: Like you didn’t get beaten by Kotoko…!

M: Hah. That was just because she caught me off guard. We went at it again while you were asleep, and it’s not like I lost there.

E: Multiple personalities… Am I right with the assumption that the you I’m talking to right now is another personality of Mikoto’s?

M: Well, I guess that’s about right.

E: I see. What do you want me to call you?

M: Huh? You’re accepting this pretty readily, aren’t you. Wouldn’t the whole multiple personalities thing normally raise some eyebrows?

E: Yeah. I also didn’t think it was real, at first.

M: Figures. If it wasn’t me, I wouldn’t believe it either. I’d just think it’s a lie someone came up with to get away with murder.

E: But Milgram acknowledges that [it is real] in your case. I simply accept that as the truth, and develop my thoughts from there. So? What do you want me to call you? Your name.

M: No clue about that. Just call me whatever.

E: … For convenience, I’ll be calling you John.

M: Sounds like a dog’s name.

E: It’s derived from John Doe, the name given to unidentified bodies. Do you like it?

M: Can’t say I’m very fond of the way you’re flaunting your knowledge.

E: … Anyway. You’re acting pretty calm today, aren’t you? I thought of you more like a monster of some sort. I wasn’t expecting to have such a proper conversation with you.

M: Don’t get cocky! If not for these chains, I would’ve beaten your face in by now, brat.

E: Ohh, scary, scary.

M: Hmph.

E: John, you are not a prisoner of Milgram. The fact that Milgram’s usual restraints are ineffective against you is more proof for that than anything. Milgram has judged that Mikoto is the prisoner, and you, as his alter, are an exception.

M: Huhh, I see. So that’s why you believe that there’s multiple personalities.

E: That’s why I thought I would try and talk to you as a key witness today. I’m rather glad that you’re being cooperative.

M: But, you know… This isn’t a good thing, probably.

E: What do you mean?

M: I (boku) might be trying to disappear.

E: …

M: Evidently, the time I (ore) have been fronting has been getting longer, so this “me” has been able to stabilize. Isn’t that the reason we can talk properly?

M: He’s not the type of person who could do stuff like that! He always looks out for others, always reads the room, always tries to get along with people around him! He can’t do stuff like that… He was on the verge of exploding! That’s why I was born. It’s obvious, isn’t it? Boku didn’t do anything!

E: Even if that’s true… Even if it wasn’t what Mikoto wanted – someone’s life was still lost.

M: …!

E: Even if it was you, John, who was in [your body at the time] – there’s no way for you to prove that. At the very least not in a way that would be accepted in court. It could still be judged that you’re pretending—

M: You…!! What do you think?

E: I…?

Toyafuyu and their parallels:

I did say I wanted to make this post. And Toya and Mafuyu have similar issues at home with a similar way to deal with them, so let's start.

Problems at home:

Both of them have similar problems at home, mainly with their parents.

While we dont actually know what toyamom and mafudad are doing, for barely being even mentioned, Mafumom and Toyadad are extremely similar on their behavior towards their kids.

- Toya's dad wants Toya to practice and practice piano, making him practice the entire day, even as a child, with the consequences of that, Toya didn't have hobbies, barely had any friends before (besides the Tenmas) and barely even knew what he liked.

- Mafuyu's mom wants Mafuyu to study and study the whole day, trying to make her quit archery and music so she can focus on her studies. As a consequence of that, Mafuyu didn't have any hobbies, no real friends outside if niigo and doesn't know what she likes.

Toya's dad wants Toya to be a classical musician, Mafuyu's mom wants Mafuyu to be a doctor. Both of them push their children in places they don't want to go in and have said they dont.

Both of them already had their confrontation, as of jp right now, both of their parents still disagree with what they're doing, but the difference in the acting because of it comes later.

Their mental health:

Because of their parents being both suffocating, they have similar issues.

Toya's only real friends were the Tenmas, and that was because his dad knew them, possibly he knows other people from his dad, but only the Tenmas actually became friends with him.

Mafuyu didn't have any real friends before niigo.

That made one of their differences, also will explain later.

None of them had any hobbies before music.. you could possibly count Archery as a hobby point for Mafuyu, but at least at the start she didn't feel much about it and it was probably just a small escape, a tiny start of a rebellion.

They both felt stuck, but they describe it in different ways.

Toya felt stuck inside a bird cage, forced to sing like birds.

In which he finally managed to open.

Mafuyu felt like a Marionette, making what her mom/the person in the strings asks

One that she also managed to escape

Both of them only managed to escape with the help of music and real friends (vbs and niigo).

Main differences

On how they're treated by the parents theres only a few.

Toya was able to rebel earlier, by influence of Tsukasa, not only that but he has more.. freedom to rebel than Mafuyu ever had.

Mafuyu's first rebelling influences were niigo, mainly Ena and Mizuki on this part, and even then she barely could do it without her mom taking away everything she had.

The differences in how they're treated on here may be because of the rest of the family.

Toya is the youngest of 3 songs, both of the older ones are already at classical music, so his dad can afford to have one Black Sheep, his legacy is already being fulfilled, so even if he disagrees with the style, he doesn't need to outright stop it.

Mafuyu is an only child, there's no one else to follow mafumom's dreams and expectations but her, this puts her under a tighter leash than Toya has.

And without friends, she couldn't do that first step out of that house.

Their real family

The people who help them be themselves, who let them have a break from their house, their real family and home

Nothing much, just both like how lively the shinonomes are with each other, because of how cold their house are.

There is a reason both Toya and Mafuyu are associated with snow.

Bonus 2: event

Imagine an event with them, they start talking about their family to each other and bonding with similar rules and expectations, maybe Mafuyu also meets Ken as an image of a better dad. Maybe someone else is with them, someone with good parents stopping and going: that is not normal.

Just so they can grow a little bit together, find reliance on each other from their issues.

SF6 Comic Thoughts:

(Spoilers) For those wondering at home why the dude became homeless in SF6, Ken Masters got suckered into a crypto scheme and is tanking his company and a developing country’s budget and his relationship with his son at the same time, and he almost gets politically assassinated by the end of this.

This rules.

Yeah this was great. Completely forgot this was even an Udon thing until I started writing this because this had like, a story, and dramatic tension, a major character facing consequences and minor characters getting attention, things happening besides boring basic pretext for fanservice and special moves which has basically never happened in an Udon Street Fighter comic. I like a lot that this is keeping things in limited scope so far.

Even Bengus’ art is pretty good here. I’m really not a fan of how Bengus’s art style looks nowadays, but the black-and-white heavy shadow palette really works here (seen some scans in color and, yeah just doesn’t hit as nicely), the stylization and paneling’s pretty great, idk man, it’s Bengus with a marginal budget and time to work on his art and having interesting material to work with. This has gotta be a breath of fresh air for the dude after years spent in the SFV mines.

Oh thank heavens the character in the poster isn’t Laura, sweet lord mercy I never want to see Laura again I know she’s coming back at some point but we’re good for now thanks

I’m really liking Mel as the other protagonist here. They’ve been sitting on Mel havin an expanded role since SF3 and here he’s given quite a lot more personality than I expected, lonely and frustrated by a sheltered upbringing and biting back against his father’s indecisiveness and immaturity, a pretty great foil for idiot manchild Luke to bounce off.

Mel Masters as he’s presented here is a frankly pretty terrific idea for a Street Fighter protagonist outside the games: someone who couldn’t be less impressed by street fighting but is bound by blood and circumstance to be a part of this, the anti-Sakura. An introspective kid who really just wants to go hang out with friends his age and play Pokemon, but who’s getting dragged through wolf-filled mountains and putting up with hyperactive fireball-tossing buff dudes because his dad is one of the greatest among them.

I like Luke quite a bit here. Not gonna touch the private military contractor thing here though, I feel like that’s a can of worms to unpack later, but if nothing else, Luke gets a lot more tolerable and even enjoyable when he has someone to bounce off even just visually, whether it’s Ryu or Jaime or the player character or Mel here. I think SF6 in game and here has settled Luke into maybe the best niche they could slot him in, described as “someone who likes to fight but with no intention of getting stronger”. As in, the New Generation but not necessarily the protagonist, but rather the coach who’s showing the ropes for the protagonist, getting you used to the controls or pumping you up or teaching Mel how to improve his camping skills and etc (and in that context him being visually and personality-wise reminiscent of videogame streamers and E-sports celebrities is, a more logical and less grating decision, if nothing else, since those are the guys people go to nowadays in order to learn and improve at competitive videogames).

Curious as to what is Kalima’s deal given she’s making her debut here and what is her dynamic with JP, because I don’t think they’re quite retreading Kolin and it’s unclear as of yet how much is JP masterminding everything.

Zero clue as to who decided to have JP talk like a German cartoon here when he’s Russian and otherwise has little accent in-game. Would love it if they just revealed this was part of the ruse he was pulling on Ken and would even be in-character, since JP’s so far been defined as a duplicitous gamemaster, a brutal crimelord masquerading as a benevolent oligarch and someone who quite literally hides his winning hand the whole time he’s fighting you. I could buy that guy putting on a fake accent to trick a foolhardy American into underestimating him just enough to sweeten the pot.

In what is already a multi-layered scheme to ruin this guy and involves weaponizing the public spectacle of Street Fighter tournaments to leverage viral fame and, having a tragic child king beg Ken to fight in the tournament right in the middle of the guy having the worst time trying to manage his relationship with his son. JP is ice cold, I’m loving it. I’m loving this role he’s having as Ken’s biggest personalized enemy.

I’m loving having a Street Fighter villain who actually does have to take the slower route of planning and masterminding and backstabbing his murderous fighting tournament plots instead of just brute-forcing calling the fighters to take shots at him. JP seems significantly underpowered by fighting game villain standards, and this might make him dramatically more interesting as a villain proper.

I’m really liking the lengths that this is taking to ground Street Fighter in the here and now. IV and V took the Alpha route and moved the series onto a sort of comic book fantasyland where they’d never have to grapple with dates and timelines and so they could slide things into prequel territory, where as this seems closer to SF3 in that it wants to place Street Fighter firmly in the Now, with modern concerns and styles and changes to the world shaping the whole thing.

Almost didn’t think Street Fighter would ever bother telling a story with Ken that was actually about Ken and not just his relationship with Ryu. I’ve gone to bat for the guy before but this is easily the most interesting he’s ever been fucking ever, just this massive reversal of fortune grounded entirely in him finally not getting to have it both ways. His lore said he was facing “accusations of orchestrating a criminal plot” but little did we suspect he really DID assist in a huge criminal plot by sheer negligence. Bison would have pulled some ridiculous super brainwashing plot, but all JP had to do was just get Ken into crypto and hook him into a Nigerian Prince scam.

Ken wants a lot of things, he HAS a lot of things to deal with, and he can’t commit to any of them. He wants to be there for his son, but he can’t be there for what his son actually wants to do in life, so he drags his son into an anciliary role in his life instead. He wants to do right by the family name and company, so he blindly follows lifestyle mottos his dad used and tanks a billion dollars into a humanitarian project while constantly rejecting everyone who asks him to slow down or reconsider what exactly he’s sinking that money into.

He wants to use his privileged position to help those in need, so he funds a project intended to help a developing nation by, what else, a fighting tournament, and funds a nation into speedrunning through technological revolutions. He very clearly desperately wants to be a fighter in his prime again and do more than just fight “with paperwork”, and in the whole comic he only really comes alive when he gets to spin kick a drone, and he has this brief little moment when he has to will himself back into Business Mode to complete a deal with the least trustworthy man of all time, and the whole time he’s patently unsure about what he’s doing and the comic calls him out on it.

It calls him out on just how selfless this idea is and how much is it really about him wanting to help Nayshall’s uncertain future, and how much is it him desperately just trying to achieve something, or even deep down how much does he just want to fight again and feel good about something the way he does when he’s fighting, and the comic makes it clear it isn’t just one or the other. Ken has always been the guy who had everything, who had everything Ryu didn’t. In at least two games his plotline is “things are going great for Ken in his home life and company as usual, but he heard Ryu is showing up at the tournament so he’s dropping literally everything to go fight the one guy who makes fighting worthwhile for him”.

This is what happens when Ken’s character catches up to reality, of what it’s like for Ken Masters, immature carefree good-hearted fighting hothead, to try and manage being himself against being a global titan of philantropy and industry (and having had this entire thing thrust onto him from birth) and being a wholly attentive family man all at the same time. Something’s just gotta give. You can’t be as wealthy and connected as Ken and be irresponsive and impulsive and immature, no matter how well-intentioned or good you are. I’m frankly shocked that this went there at all after the trailers mostly implied Ken was just framed injustly.

Street Fighter has never ever even so much as gestured into the idea of Ken’s position and money as anything other than a point of contrast between him and Ryu, so to go from that to this where the whole thing’s predicated on the idea that Ken, while every bit as well-intentioned as ever and certainly a lot more mature than he’s ever been before, fucked up badly and is doing some real damage to people he cares for? That he tried to have everything and now stands on the precipice of having nothing? That’s good shit my dudes.

He hears “You said you were doing this for all the people in this country. So...haven’t you already decided?” and solidifies his decision, while the panel focuses very clearly on him clutching the red headband, the object that’s always been strongly associated with both his and Ryu’s trajectories, the thing that he gave Ryu all the way back in the Alpha series as a reminder to stay focused and not give in to the Satsui no Hadou, the monstrous thing that was tearing Ryu apart and costing him every ounce of concentration to stave off, a thing that’s come to represent their friendship as well as Ryu personally. The thing that he now clutches to stay focused in his decision, before everything goes wrong and he pays the price for it no matter what his intentions were.

This is some primo shit and easily the most I’ve ever been ecstatic about a Street Fighter plotline in a very long time. Seems like they set out hardcore to undo Ken’s long-standing role as a secondary character to Ryu and not rely on their traditionally hackier stuff with superpowered dark sides or Shadaloo plots. Thoroughly impressed and I can’t wait to see more.

Oh god okay. The guda swap theory is a theory which, as far as I'm aware, has started on jp twitter and which I have been snorting everyday since. MASSIVE spoilers for traum, lb7 and ordeal call ahead.

Okay so if you're caught up with fgo jp, you know the reason why the Earth was bleached: our earth was swapped with the earth from 100 years in the future. When Sion explains the process to us, the exemple she uses is "if two people were identical and you swapped them, the world would not know the difference. Hell, the people involved might not even be aware that they have been swapped."

Now that sure is a very specific exemple to pick. Especially considering Traum had an entire subplot of "hey if you had no way to know for sure if you are truly [you] would that be fucked up or what." Double especially considering one of the star servants of Traum is Xu Fu, a character who noticeably made her debuts in an event that had two different Gudas running around. I am certain this will never be relevant again.

On a completely unrelated note, you know who else shows up in Traum? Specimen E! Our good friend E! Here's what we know about E:

They are a human being (confirmed by Sion in Ordeal Call)

They have Complicated feelings on humanity (as evidenced by all the servants in Traum going buckwild over the concept of humanity)

They had ongoing contracts with a fuckton of servants. Granted they were powered by an even bigger amount of ghosts but that's still important to point out considering most of the mages we run into have trouble with even just one servant.

Now that's funny. I could swear I knew just another character who was human, had some complicated feelings on humanity, and had the ability to maintain multiple contracts with an ungodly amount of servants.

By the way for no reason in particular do you remember the Lostroom OAV? Specifically this bit where Gudao is talking to Galahad, while standing on the bleached earth, and then with no explanation whatsoever Gudao is suddenly like twenty feet in the air falling on the bleached earth? It could be a metaphor for all the tumultuous emotions Gudao is feeling at that moment. It could also be very literally Gudao falling on the bleached earth. I sure wonder what circumstances could lead to Guda falling on a different earth altogether.

I am just saying. Wouldn't it be funny. Wouldn't it just be fucking hilarious.

13. Dhalsim - This is so out of character but I actually like it, I just don't like it more than the previous ones. Hipster Dhalsim is a statement alright - Outfit 3 > Outfit 1 > Outfit 2

14. Manon - Yes of course the French fighter gets a period costume as well. Boring - Outfit 2 > Outfit 1 > Outfit 3

D Tier

15. Zangief - Like with Dhalsim, this is so out of character. I don't hate it but I don't love it either - Outfit 3 > Outfit 1 > Outfit 2

16. JP - I guess this is his "cult leader" outfit or whatever that we see him wear in various story concept art. I don't know how I feel about it - Outfit 2 > Outfit 1 > Outfit 3

17. Ken - ...Capcom seems to be in a constant need to make Ken look as ugly as possible since SFIV, I don't know what he did to them - Outfit 1 > Outfit 2 > Outfit 3

18. E. Honda - This does fit Honda, because it is ridiculously busy but eh, it's a bit whatever - Outfit 2 > Outfit 3 > Outfit 2

- Aah, maku no uchi bentou shichatta. Maku no uchi=inside the curtain (hanging behind the targets), makunouchi bentou=bento lunch which consists of fish, meat, pickles, eggs and vegetables along with rice and an umeboshi

- hakama wa hakanma (袴ははかんま). Not sure what this means but i feel like hakanma is supposed to sound like the chinese hao kan ma which means "does it look good?"

- Yuu wa nan shi ni kyuudoujou e? Yuu (揖)=Bow (as in bowing after you finish shooting), also sounds like "you"

- Uchiokoshi, umaku ikanakute gekiokoshi. Gekiokoshi (激おこし)=extremely mad

- Boku ga uchiokoshi tara yuu ga mae e. Yuu ga mae e (ユーが前へ)=You go to the front (also sounds like yuugamae)

- Daisan wa daisansha ni mitemoraou. Daisan (大三)=the "two-thirds" draw, daisansha (第三者)=third party

“fight by your side” vs “i will lay my life down for you” // the diamant-sertation series

my partner (@asylumdream) said, “so, you’re writing a diamant-sertation“ when i said i was “writing another diamant dissertation“ since talking about engage localisation funnies triggered this conversation.

@successeurdiamant i’m gonna move the convo over here since this might be a long post and i’d rather not clog a post with character dissertations, lmao (any other ppl in the diamant tumblr zone do feel free to add onto this post too, though! the more the merrier!)

“fight by your side“ and “i will lay my life down for you“ both have two distinct feelings and i love them both because of both of the feelings they convey and how they both relate to diamant’s character.

to my personal taste, i really love “i will lay my life down for you“ mainly because it plays on his sense of devotion and how he’s hellbent on giving all of himself to his country, to ending the way, to alear... because he would, and he does. i wouldn’t know about how his character behaves specifically in the jp version (since i don’t speak japanese, and from what it sounds like is that he’s still relatively the same, if not tonally different because of line changes), but we know that he is a perfectionist and holds a lot of guilt based on if you let him or alcryst kill morion.

what kind of brother is he to let his brother fill in for his weakness? what kind of son kills his father? alcryst outright says that it’s a burden that is too heavy for him to bear (so he shall do it instead), but imagine how heavy the other burden is, to be helpless in helping the ones you hold most dear? he’s still his brother’s brother, after all. alcryst also states in ch15 that he’s worried for diamant’s mental state because he keep bottling his emotions.

diamant... there’s some (a lot of) brodian stubbornness in there. it’s the sheer devotion, come hell or high water, in sickness and in heath, and all of that- it’s his need to see everything through. what kind of king is he is he does not? he wants peace, and he’ll devote himself to that peace. he wants the one he loves to be safe, so he’ll devote himself to that, too. (this kind of devotion is actually what’s all over alear and marth’s dynamic. there is so much subtextual devotion from one to the other, it hurts. marth was, in fact, the one watching over alear the entire time, after all. but i digress; this is a diamant/dialear post, not a marth/alear post)

the thing is, though, it’s not exactly his life to give, now is it? his life, first and foremost, must prioritise his people above all. he has to be the the pillar of strength and the perfect, flawless diamond that everyone perceives him as. there’s his relationship with ivy and how brodia has hurt elusia over, and over, and over again and how elusians are taught to be scared of brodian armour. he’s the one only one that can make it right. that’s his job as king, after all. his life for his people. always.

in fact, perhaps giving his life to one person, the person he loves most, is a reclamation of his life. he cannot give his life to one person, for his kingdom mandates him to give himself wholly to the greater good. but perhaps, in another life, he could do so without fear of flaw or failure.

as an aside: now’s the perfect time to plug in and propose “shinunoga e-wa“ for diamant and alear’s relationship (i’d talked about it a little here but nothing in depth) because doesn’t “i want you to be my end. if it meant saying goodbye to you, i’d rather die“. fujii kaze has also said that the lyrics are on the old fashioned side, and historically, when “i love you“ gets translated from other languages into japanese, some equivalent similar to “i could die for you“ or “the moon is beautiful because of you“ is used because of the cultural context behind it. (i cannot believe this has come back to grace me with its presence.)

now... after some mulling it over, “i’ll fight by your side“ also carries a similar sort of intimacy... but different. it doesn’t have the same gravity that “i would lay my life on the line for you“ has, but it’s sweeter. softer. understanding that his life is not his to give and thus, he has no right to give it to someone whom of which it does not belong to (ironically, however, he gives his life to the state, but that’s out of duty and not out of emotional intimacy).

but this doesn’t make it bad. no, far from it, actually.

you see... “i’ll fight by your side“ very strongly reminds me of this confession:

“you are the wind at my back, and the sword at my side. together, my love, we shall build a peaceful world, just you and me.“

sound familiar? it’s chrom’s s-support cg dialogue, and i think it conveys the same exact thing that diamant tries to convey in his english s support. chrom has always viewed robin as his equal, and in terns of feh canon, his “other half“ (no, i’m not lying about that. chrobin is practically canon confirmed, especially with its inclusion of chrom and robin as the emblem of bonds). he loves robin- platonically, romantically, or even a secret third thing. friends are not lesser than romantic partners, after all.

but diamant... diamant views alear as close, just as close. maybe not as an equal like chrom and robin (who is he to consider the divine one an equal? he’s just the king of brodia, and alear is the monarch dragon of lythos. they’re god, effectively. to be equal to a god... or to drag a god down to his standing... it doesn’t sit well with him), but definitely with the level of understanding that goes beyond a commander and a subordinate, or a king and a god. they’re friends. they love each other, romantically, platonically, or even a secret third thing.

JP aten't ded [pancreatitis update]

So for those who don't know me; in 2022 I almost died of pancreatitis, it was a bad time. I was put in a coma and was saved by the hard work of the doctors, nurses and support staff of the NHS. I spent 4 1/2 months in hospital relearning how to walk and eat and over the past year have had a bunch of cool complications from that event.

We never really found out the cause and since then pancreatitis has continued to loom over me. Every time I eat and feel anything unexpected in my abdomen I am hypervigilant that my pancreatitis is returning and that I'll be hospitalised again.

Last week that fear became a reality. That also might end up being a good thing.

My experience of pancreatitis begins with back pain. I'm pushing 40 by this point and back pain is hardly uncommon for people my age, but this is constant, cannot be relieved by changing position and ultimately feels like a knife being driven into a tight knot in the back. This persists until it becomes impossible to sleep through the discomfort.

This is the symptom that woke me up last week. In the middle of the night I felt it combined with a stabbing pain in my abdomen, followed by vomiting; and remembered with terrible clarity the weeks of that pain I endured before my first admission. I woke my wife and, terrified, resolved to go to A&E.

At the hospital we went through the standard gamut of blood tests which confirmed that something was going on, and I sat in urgent treatment waiting for a bed to free up. The NHS is an institution under resourced by a government that seeks to destroy it and replace it with medical insurance that would force most working class people into debt so crushing they could never escape it.

As such the wait is long, and I spend a good chunk of it on the floor in a side room because every other position is worse. They don't have an answer for what I have yet (spoilers; it's pancreatitis) and so they can't prescribe pain relief. So I wait. My wife waits with me and I have to look up at her stricken face as she looks down at me powerless to do anything to help.

Being ill sucks and the toll it takes on the people who love you is terrible.

Eventually I have a CT scan (abdominal pelvis with contrast for you radiology fans out there) and a while later am moved into a cubicle where a doctor finally administers IV morphine. The feeling is fuzzy, the relief immediate. My abdomen still hurts a lot, the muscles strained from the vomiting, but the tension I had been unable to release from my body flows out of me and I fall asleep.

At one point I wake up and my wife is asleep in the chair beside me with her head laid by my side on the gurney. I feel grateful and guilty for putting her through this.

From there I eventually get moved to a surgical unit. It's here that we learn that after over a year of speculation we finally have a root cause for my pancreatitis; gall stones. Getting in early and not waiting until my condition for worse means we caught the gallbladder in the act. Motherf-

Sometimes the gallbladder produces stones and sometimes those stones interact with the pancreatic duct, causing the pancreas to decide the world is ending and move all of it's stocks into burning the gaff down. Their own gaff, where they fucking live. It is a dumb and anxious organ. I can relate.

The result was that a few days ago I had a very sexy cholecystectomy. As you can guess that's them taking the gallbladder out, in this case via keyhole surgery which has left me very tender but massively reduced my time to discharge from hospital. The doctor on ward rounds gave me the option of discharge the following day before he went away and spoke with his consultant who said; "Have you seen his history? Not a fucking chance, tell him he's staying" (I assume).

So is that it? Gallbladder gone and pancreatitis no more? Well- Maybe.

Pancreatitis isn't well understood. Gallstones are indicated and the most likely cause of pancreatitis in me. Other causes could be alcohol; which some doctors love to bring up as their pet theory, or cholesterol. Studies are ongoing into pancreatitis (my medical records are part of one of them) to understand the causes and also the varied survival rates among severe pancreatitis sufferers. So with that said there is a possibility it could return and despite everything I have to be constantly vigilant to make sure I am ready if it does.

Which brings us to the last thing I want to talk about, which is living with pancreatitis.

On the grand scale of things my living adjustment for pancreatitis is quite tolerable; I have to take synthetic pancreatin with every meal which allows my body to process things like fat and complex carbohydrates. I also no longer have a gall bladder, this means my body doesn't have a reserve of bile which is used to break down fat as it passes into the large intestine. As such for the next few weeks I need to be on a low fat diet and slowly introduce fats to build up a tolerance.

More difficult for me is the uncertainty around my body. I've never lived a particularly healthy life but before my illness I at least felt like I understood it. Where it hurt, what was wrong, how to know how to communicate that. These days my stomach gurgles and I find myself performing an itinerary of everything I've eaten to see if there's something in there that might cause me to suddenly collapse.

The uncertainty is draining but the vigilance I feel is worth it, and if there's one thing to take away from all of this it's; if you can please don't wait until it's unbearable to get help, please go early if you can and if it's nothing at least rule it out.

I usually keep an eye on amiami. The pre-orders there do go out really fast so you need to be nimble if you see them (I think some of the new Vongola/varia boxes went sold out in a day or so), but I've observed that sometimes things go back in stock there quickly!

If I see an item that is not on amiami or has the "order closed" status, I send the item to my go-to figure side called Penguin's Crown shop and ask them to see if they can find the item through their dealers. This is...not the cheapest way, but I feel more comfortable there than looking through eBay. I'm fairly certain they ship and offer the searching service I described outside of Italy too.

I've also used Mercari through ZenMarket, but only a few times, so I'm no expert. The hardest part is finding the JP site to look for...

I'm not a genius at finding stuff but I hope this was helpful! I'd definitely start looking on amiami semi-daily. You may even find stuff that was delisted come back available 💙

Thinking it over now, perhaps everyone had, in fact, intended for those to be Valentine's gifts?

Jun: Wait, all those gifts, and you think that juuust maybe they were for Valentine's!? Gimme a break!

Don't tell me that you took all those chocolates without ever returning the favour...

...Never mind, I don't think I wanna know the answer to that. I'm gonna choose to believe that you definitely did something in return for 'em, Ohii-san.

(changing the topic) So, uh, what about Nagi-senpai?

Jun: No way, dude. Pretty sure I'd be the last person to ever have such sappy memories, right?

Hiyori: Oh, what a shame...

Well, for you to so earnestly get your ideas from a manga isn't unlike you either, I suppose.

My own tender heart which believed for a single moment that you truly had such effervescent memories doesn't know what to do with itself, now! How tragic!

The key question is: what about Ibara?

He called it one big retail war at one point, and when I objected, he got strangely quiet...

Hiyori: ...Ibara has his own fair share of baggage, after all. When talking about his past, he described his own childhood to be devoid of color.

Hiyori: It does seem to be the case. This is certainly an issue, considering how we'll be performing at Chocolat Fes!

Hiyori: "It's a bit late, but... Here, for you. Chocolates for Valentine's."

Hiyori: "T-thank you... I'd almost given up hope of ever receiving any. I'm so happy..."

Jun: ...What, suddenly larping with yourself?

Hiyori: I was simply reading aloud the manga page you had open. Hmm, so this is how a typical Valentine's Day plays out...

Jun: Um, yeah, but it's from a manga.

Hiyori: But Jun-kun, despite having no prior notion of what Valentine's is like, it was manga that helped you form an impression of it, no?

To the point that it's even got you mentioning love...

So, what if you were to simply convince Ibara that Valentine's isn't just a retail war...!

Jun: And if I could get him to see it as an event overflowing with love instead, he'll keep all those adults from messing up the day of love with their sneaky schemes ?—

Hiyori: Whether he will or won't is something we won't know unless we try, yes? ♪

And on top of that, I believe it's of utmost importance for us to experience a normal Valentine's Day!

After all, none of us know what it's like!
