My Twelve Favorite (Children’s) (Chapter) Books (in no particular order and without regard for genre or intended age) and then some

Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones. If you are looking for perfection (and if you love fantasy), you will find it here. This also serves as a placeholder for the rest of Diana Wynne Jones’s body of work. You can’t go wrong with anything she wrote, although I do have my favorites. The audiobooks read by Gerard Doyle are fabulous.

Tashi and the Big Stinker by Anna Fienberg and Barbara Fienberg . It was like this… (The whole series is phenomenal; picked this particular one because it’s my kids’ favorite of the lot). Probably written for children on the younger side (quite a bit younger, lol) but that’s never stopped me…

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. If you want your heart torn out in less than a hundred pages.

The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, by Nancy Farmer. Each time I read this I find it just as thrilling as the last time.

The Grey King, by Susan Cooper. While each book in this series is spectacularly written, this one is particularly haunting. Again, be prepared to have your heart torn out by the roots.

Is Underground by Joan Aiken. An absolute gem by one of the most wildly inventive and fantastic authors to ever write for children (which obviously is saying a lot).

Lionboy by Zizou Corder. A favorite in this household. The audiobook is – chef’s kiss.

Danny, the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. This book also serves as a placeholder for Roald Dahl, whose mastery goes without saying. The audiobook read by Peter Serafinowicz is terrific.

The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope. Perfectly crafted. (lol cw: quite sweet heterosexual romance)

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. Every time I read it, I love it all over again.

The Superlative Horse, by Jean Merrill. What is the price, and what is the value?

Captain Underpants, by Dav Pilkey. One of my kids' favorites, and mine too. The later books get a bit convoluted, but this one is so much fun.

BREAKING: BRINDLETON HACK STRIKES AGAIN - ELEANORE'S STEAMY PHOTOS RELEASED; LEAKED MESSAGES CAST DOUBT OVER ROYAL ENGAGEMENT

Uh-oh! Eleanore is in for a lot of trouble.

The former Princess seems to be the Leak’s latest target after her racy pictures and revealing messages were plastered online.

Much like her sister, The Crown Princess, Eleanore’s photos and alleged texts were simultaneously released on different social media platforms early this morning. The photos include what seems to be three mirror selfies, showing Eleanore in her underwear.

The never-before seen set of photos also include pictures of Eleanore with her former aide and ex-boyfriend, Clive, including one where they are both making a rude gesture towards the camera.

However, what has most people talking are two sets of screenshots of Eleanore’s alleged exchange of messages with her now-fiancé, Crown Prince Ibrahim that seem to reveal the deceit surrounding their sudden engagement.

It can be recalled that Eleanore’s engagement to Ibrahim was abruptly announced last year via the Al-Simharan Royal Family, leaving not only Brindleton, but Eleanore’s family in complete shock.

The purported messages between Eleanore (blue text) and Ibrahim (grey text) show the two plotting about “releasing” and “going public” with an announcement. People are convinced that the conversation seems to be hinting at their engagement. Eleanore, at some point, even stated that she is “sick of this place,” and agreeing to Ibrahim’s plan, ultimately. She also admits to knowing that she will be “disowned” by her family once they push through with their scheme. The conversation also revealed their plans on where Eleanore will stay and how Ibrahim will talk to his dad about getting her her own place. True enough, it has been reported earlier that the King of Al-Simhara has “gifted” Eleanore her own villa within the Palace Complex.

But why would they lie and resort to this scheme? Insiders claim that for Eleanore, the reason is simple - she wants to leave and be free from her family:

“I’m not at all surprised. That girl is willing to do everything to get away - be it from her family, from Anya’s shadow, from the heartbreak - pick one. So Ibrahim giving her an out is a literal lifeline for her. She’ll not only be able to shake herself free from her family’s clutches, she also gets a shot at becoming Queen one day.”

As for Ibrahim, sources from Al-Simhara claim that the future King also wants his freedom:

“Actually, if you come to think of it, days before their surprise engagement was announced, local tabloids have been reporting about how King Phillip is pressuring his son to marry someone “appropriate” and with good “breeding.” This, of course, is nothing new to Ibrahim. He’s been told that his entire life, but The King has gone on really hard on his son this time, even going as far as to “audition” possible brides. Word on the street is, Ibrahim and Eleanore got on well during their first meeting in Brindleton and have become friends since. I think he offered her a deal so they can help each other out. Eleanore gets to be worshiped as a future Queen and finally leave her family behind, while he’ll be able to get his dad off his back once and for all.”

Another curious set of messages seem to point towards Ibrahim and Eleanore planning to meet at “Heather’s” - which people say is in reference to Lady Heather Schlewlyn’s residence, Schlewlyn Hall. Lady Heather is one of Eleanore’s best friends, and E and Ibrahim’s engagement photos (where she’s wearing a purple dress) are said to have been taken at Schlewlyn Hall.

The texts also reveal that Eleanore was not at all “surprised” by the ring as she stated during their engagement interview. She was apparently shown a photo of it beforehand, where she even commented on how huge it is, compared to her mum’s ring.

Whether or not King Phillip is privy to Eleanore and Ibrahim’s plan is still unknown, and no official comments from either the Brindleton or Al-Simharan Royals have been released.

Pan’s worlds began, not to collide, but to meet. Seeing Molly shake hands with Amy was an image she had never been able to foresee in all of her talent with Weaving, neither traditional nor enhanced by the mysterious red stone. Ever since the bracelet, Pan felt only the need to reach in one particular direction.

The girls were nowhere to be found. Perhaps, she thought her mind was quieted by the bracelet’s absence. Maybe her focus on other things took precedence of all else. She didn’t know. But she knew that they would not be gone forever. And in 9 months time, they would no longer be a figment of her imagination.

The shifting Pan’s surroundings did not go unnoticed: she saw Molly leave with the bracelet, and Floss return to the hall. She saw Leslie and Go-Go, united in their joint puzzlement to revelations of another Viper. She saw a calm and collected Amy, and a supportive Eleanor by her side. But what she didn’t see was a single ounce of fear. There was none to be had.

“Delaying the vaccine only serves as a disservice to the two women awaiting it,” Pan replied. ”There are more than enough of us here to ensure that she doesn’t hurt herself in pursuit of a ghost that may or may not be coming here already. If there is anything in abundance in this room, its the overwhelming desire to confine a woman to her bedrest.”

The Shadows all looked to Pan, and before the guilt could register, Pan disarmed the room with a mocking smile. “I jest.” She said. “But, in all seriousness, I’m sure our remote associate will warn us if our suspect moves.”

Pan paused long enough for her phone to buzz; a text message with a single word: Yep.

“In the meantime, relax. As for O-Ren,” Pan continued “ she’s waited long enough. God forbid she spends the majority of her calm before the storm in a coma. Now…if you’ll excuse me,” she hoisted her travel bag over her shoulder, “this is beginning to feel very much like a work meeting. and I’d rather be smoothing things over with my fiancé. Also, I’d like a shower before dinner.” . ”Ms. Upton, if you could point me in the direction of a restroom, I’d be very appreciative.”

The Shadows shared looks with one another. The closest thing to a standing order from their director had been to simply take it easy. But to their relief, Pan was getting better at detangling the woman from the title.

in the end, Eleanor followed the suggestion from her friend, not the orders of a superior. “Floss, when you’re done, I’d like to see this cellar of yours. And prepare notes.”

Eventually the hallway would fan out and leave Leslie alone. But Go-Go’s words would stay with her and eventually drown out Eleanor’s. The echo of the bodyguard’s gratitude swam in her thoughts until they blended…and a particular idea took shape.

She stepped outside. The sun began to peak through the grey overcast and shine down in broken rays upon the Eboncry. She took long, hard steps across the lawn to the plane before she stopped and placed her hand on the hull.

“I’m going to miss you,”

Leslie didn’t know when. But she knew she eventually would.

Time contracts, expands, with perception. Curved around the gathering, it intensifies into a moment that - unknown to the participants will be the stuff of prophecy.

As best as can be defined, roughly three things are happening at once, how innocuous they seem...with the homely, utterly normal smell of cooking permeating the house.

The scientist gestured down the hall. “All the rooms have en-suites, yours is down the hall, toward the rear of the house, you’ll find it.” Her attention flicked to Eleanor. “I’ll show you the wine cellar when O-ren is back in the waking world, be a dear and don't murder me over what I’ve done to it.”

Inside the infirmary Go go was sat on a pulled up ottoman by O-ren’s hospital bed. Her forehead rested against her steepled fingers. Her attention jarred as Floss gently set down the cooler on the coffee table.

“If you’re ready?” Go go all but sprang to her feet.

“I am, yes.” She looked terrified. Something about that heartened Floss, in a person who reportedly couldnt experience such a human emotion as terror. She nodded. The vial was cold in her hands as she drew up the fluid into the syringe, approaching the bed.

“It’ll take a few minutes, and I suspect she’ll still be weak for a short while, so stop her trying to jump out of bed, alright?” Holding the needle she gave Go go a smile and the young woman nodded, some of the fear on her face dissipating.

The bodyguard took O-ren’s wrist. Floss’ thumb alighted deftly on the plunger of the syringe....

...O-ren got up from her seat in the hotel lobby, leaving Elle sat behind her.

“You cant run forever rabbit!” The statuesque blonde jabbed at her retreating back.

O-ren paused, turned. The look of irritation and dread shifted to a smile of satisfaction.

“I’m done running, from here on out, whatever finds me, finds me.”

...

O-ren’s eyes opened and Florence stood back. Her strategic mind did the rapid inventory - this wasn't a hospital, it wasn't Elle’s house.

“Go-go?” Her voice creaked a little from lack of use.

The body guard clasped her step mom in her arms.

“It’s alright. We’re safe. I’m going to explain everything.” She pointed over to Floss. “This is Florence, she made you the antidote.”

O-ren looked at the other woman and her mouth fell open, stunned, she tried to think what to say as her faculties trickled back. Floss raised a a hand in a gentle gesture of pause.

“I’ll let you two fill in the blanks, but if you need me, I’ll be down in the wine cellar.”

Floss retreated to give the two of them a moment to catch up, and to give a tour of the would-be dungeon. Go go held onto O-ren, who clasped her shoulder.

Mallory got up off the bed and snatched her bag. She’d managed to lay there another half hour. Her feet carried her out of the hotel, and a little way into town to a car hire place. She knew she was probably kicking up all kinds of a trail, but there was no helping it at this point.

She rented an innocuous grey hatchback and climbed into it.

The coordinates were on the other side of Cambridge city centre, it would take about two hours to get there, ditch the car, and proceed as stealthily as she could the last mile or two on foot.

It was barely a touch at all. The side of Molly’s fingertip skimmed the cool surface of the red stone as she brushed the fabric to one side to better see the bracelet. Her breath hitched in her throat - she didn't know what she had expected, but it would surely be something drastic.

But no. It wasn't like that.

The familiar cadence of Liss’ footsteps approaching made her turn to the doorway. Her expectant partner was there with a bag over one shoulder. And there were two young girls flanking her on either side. Both of them were ten.

In an instant Molly knew this wasn't now, this was nearly eleven years away.

A buttercup which sprouted from the cracked flagstones where Max Llewellyn had been standing when the missiles hit London quivered in the evening breeze.

Molly started laughing. It was just Liss now. The girls had departed for the moment. She stood there with her hands resting on the sides of the drawer.

Where to begin? Funny, because beginnings and endings were no longer quite so clear cut as previously imagined. She glowed when she spoke.

“You know, Lucky is going to fall off that scooter we get her when she’s eight? Remind me to tell her she cant have it if she doesn't wear her knee pads.”

Danny Spiller (he/him) is a queer trans voice actor and professional introvert. David is a voice actor and singer from Milwaukee, and is excited to join The Way We Haunt Now! Demos and recent exploits can be found on his website.

Deniss Carvajal joins us this season as Cecilia -- a toddler who is just trying to play, y'all. I was SO BLOWN AWAY by Deniss's audition and I can't wait for you to hear what she's done this season!!!

Deniss is a business professional and bilingual voice actress from Colombia.

We're so thrilled David S. Dear is returning as Henry, who might introduce The Apartment to some new TV shows... and who will definitely be around to help Aaron figure out his unfinished business.

David is a voice actor and writer (actually more of a storyteller) who produces and performs in numerous audiobooks and is the creator of the audio drama A Ninth World Journal, co-producer of the audio drama-comedy Deconstructive Criticism podcast regular cast member of the audio comedy OZ-9 and has made appearances in many other audio drama podcasts.

Eleanor Grey will be back as Frankie: the afterlife of the party, the ghostest with the mostest, the best reciter of morbid Victorian poetry in the entire void.

Eleanor Grey is a multidisciplinary artist with a particular interest in queer speculative fiction. Eleanor can usually be found on a footpath somewhere in the British countryside, listening to audio dramas and dreaming of the stars.

Ella Gans joins the haunting this season as Nurse!

Ella has been doing online voicework for around 9 years now, and is always eager to participate in a new project. She hopes that one day she can do voiceover as a full time job!

Emma Skinner joins us this season as TV Announcer, TV Voices, and... uh, that's not a good sign.... 9-1-1 Operator.

Emma is an actor, writer, and composer from the East Coast. You can hear her as Rosa (and soon, as Cugine!) in seasons 3 and 4 of Breathing Space. She also plays Mel and composes music on Twigs and Hearts.

Gabriel Perez joins the haunting this season as Granddad (whose???? you'll have to listen to find out) and one of the voices of Poltergeist 0!

Gabriel Perez is the composer & audio engineer for the Quid Pro Roll podcast, lead writer and sound designer for the Heartlands VR-RPG, and lover of all things strange.

Georgia is not only returning as Josie, they also cowrote this season, creating a delightfully poignant closing character arc for our favorite ghost seamstress!

Georgia Mckenzie is a writer, director, voice actor. They are creator, writer, director & voice of Clarity on the Fast Track to 40 podcast, Monica in Ostium podcast and various other characters in podcasts such as Victoria's Lift, Copperheart & more. When they're not doing that, they're a science & government communications specialist so they can do more audiodramas. They also play the know-it-all sustainability and weird vehicle fan cohost on What Drives Us and all things geeky special guest on The Vertical Panel podcast.

James Molloy joins us this season as TV Voices!

Working with James was a delight. In their own words:

We're so delighted Jeff Goldman is returning as one of the voices of The Apartment, and you should be, too!

Jeff is a father of two beautiful girls and husband to a patient and understanding woman. He acts, sings and dances with Pied Piper Players of San Mateo, California, is a budding pizzaiolo and enjoys photography. In his spare time, he is an executive compensation attorney with a large law firm in Palo Alto, California. This is his first podcast.

Jenna Rose joins the haunting this season as Minerva and FF House.

Jenna Rose (she/they) is an experienced queer/nonbinary voice actor who has performed in animation pilots, visual novels, video games, and podcasts. She has participated in professional VA training since 2020 and enjoys contributing to content that explores queer experiences, mental health issues, and the occasional eldritch horror. In their spare time Jenna is a yoga teacher, an amateur baker, a pet parent, and a dabbling cosplayer who once sang on stage as a queer female war general.
