A Comprehensive Guide to Enamel Pins: Soft, Hard, Epoxy, 3D Metal, and Cut Out
Introduction:
Enamel pins, intricate metal ornaments adorned with vibrant enamel designs, come in various types such as soft enamel pins, hard enamel pins, epoxy resin enamel pins, 3D metal enamel pins, and cut-out enamel pins. Crafted from high-quality precious metals like gold, platinum, or silver, these pins undergo meticulous processes to achieve a smooth, mirror-like surface with long-lasting colors.
Enamel Pins: Expressions of Life and Identity
Inspired by life, enamel pins feature exquisite patterns ranging from flowers and animals to words and beyond. Serving as decorative elements, these designs convey emotions and symbolize meanings. The intricate production process involves metal fabrication, pattern design, enamel firing, and more, demanding skilled craftsmanship at every step to create beautiful enamel pins.
Beyond Decoration: Collectibles and Symbols
Enamel pins transcend mere decoration; they are coveted collector's items, symbolizing status and identity. With their intricate designs and enduring quality, these pins also make thoughtful gifts for family, friends, or important clients. Whether in daily life or special occasions, enamel pins captivate with their unique charm, leaving a lasting impression.
Understanding Enamel Pin Types:
    Soft Enamel Pins:
        Versatile and cost-effective.
Dimpled texture for an authentic feel.
Moderately durable, allowing for a wide range of colors and designs.
        Popular for custom designs.
    Hard Enamel Pins:
Premium appearance with a smooth surface.
Higher cost but worth it for a high-class feel.
Ideal for occasions where a polished look is essential.
Suitable for cute designs like cartoons and anime.
    Epoxy Pins:
Clear, reflective, and smooth dome surface.
Enhances the inner pattern's beauty and brightness.
        Offers protection against scratches.
Ideal for complex patterns requiring small sizes and budget-friendly.
    3D Metal Pins:
        Lifelike and three-dimensional effect.
High durability, suitable for detailed designs.
Can be used with various colors for a customized look.
Perfect for intricate designs involving people, objects, and landscapes.
    Cut Out (Hollowed Out) Pins:
        Specialized pins with design constraints.
Suitable for text and simple curves.
Typically made from stainless steel or iron.
Limited to metal colors but can incorporate soft enamel or printing.
Conclusion:
Choosing the right enamel pin type depends on your design and requirements. Whether opting for the versatile soft enamel, the premium look of hard enamel, the reflective charm of epoxy, the lifelike appeal of 3D metal, or the specialized cut-out pins, conveying your design to the supplier ensures professional advice and optimal results.

Fly Agaric pins! Soft enamel + epoxy vs hard enamel. (Left is soft, right is hard!) Some folks think soft enamel is soft, so I wanted to share how nice the quality is! With soft enamel + epoxy I love how warm and bright the colors are, plus how accurate the linework is to my original design.

Millions Knives.

Here are the two brothers together. I was inspired by the fight in the Trigun Stampede finale.
For plating I'm leaning toward blue and purple chrome with soft enamel and epoxy. But I'm considering gold and black nickel plating with hard enamel as well.
These pins and other pins I've shared recently will be available as addons as part of my Angelology III campaign. I'll basically be using Kickstarter/Backerkit as a preorder system for them. You can follow the pre-launch page to be notified when the campaign goes live.

The Jellinom mini pin backerkit campaign IS LIVE as part of Pintopia 2!
Tumblr media
This is my first time doing a crowdfund for a gacha collection - itty bitty pins that, once in stock, will only be available at random through gacha spins! In the campaign, you can choose each specific pin you want for $12 each, or do gacha spins for a discount (pricing shown above).
As a bit of a background, "Jellinoms" were originally a collaborative concept between my fiancé and I, starting with a "Flanom" design! These are teenier updated takes on the design with different expressions and colors, and keep the translucent enamel over smooth metal concept! They will have epoxy over the faces as well, which will make them look very multi-dimensional.
The base goal is 7 Jellinom pins I designed + a collaborative Jellinom design by Fantasy Fox Creations with holographic glitter!
They are my Pintopia partner, so I also have a collab design in their cat paw campaign.
Tumblr media
Backers of both campaigns will get the collab pins for free with their pledges! 💕 I also have early bird incentives for the first 48hrs!
Stretch goals for my campaign will include more Jellinoms, washi tape, stickers, various types of shaker keychains, and more - depending on how much we unlock.

The 5 main types of enamel pins: status displays or fine gifts
Enamel pins are delicate metal ornaments that are inlaid with brightly colored enamel designs. There are various types of these pins, including soft enamel pins, hard enamel pins, epoxy resin enamel pins, 3D metal enamel pins, and openwork enamel pins, according to the process. They are usually made of high-quality precious metals, such as gold, platinum or silver, etc., and after fine craftsmanship, the surface is as smooth as a mirror, and the color is long-lasting.
The design of enamel pins is inspired by life, and they can be inlaid with a variety of exquisite patterns, such as flowers, animals, people, words and so on. These patterns can be used as decorative elements, but also express an emotion or symbolize a certain meaning. The production process of enamel pins is very complex and requires several processes, including metal production, pattern design, enamel firing and so on. Each step of the process requires exquisite skill and experience to produce a beautiful enamel pin.
Enamel pins are not only a decorative item, but also a collector’s item. Due to its complicated production and high price, it is usually regarded as a symbol of status and identity. At the same time, with its exquisite design and long-lasting quality, enamel pins have also become a gifting or gift option for family, friends or important clients. Whether in daily life or on special occasions, enamel pins can show their unique charm and make a lasting impression. Nowadays, the development of industry and technology has made the production of enamel pins easy and at the right price, so that the general public can also use these beautiful enamel pins, so what is the difference between these pins, and how do I pick these pins, let’s take a look.
1. Soft Enamel Pins
Tumblr media
Custom soft enamel pins are the ones I most often recommend to my customers because they are the most versatile, simpler to produce and cheaper to produce than other types of enamel pins. Firstly, in terms of touch and appearance, your fingers can feel the dimpled texture of the metal surface, giving it an authentic feel. Secondly, soft enamel pins are produced by pouring a layer of paint or enamel onto an electroplated product embryo, heating and baking it, and then cooling it naturally so that the paint or enamel sits on the inside of the metal grooves. Because of the process limitations, soft enamel pins are moderately durable and the metal parts are prone to scratches, but they are the most versatile in terms of customer design and manufacturing process, and they allow for a wide range of different types of colors and designs, which is a very popular and used type of pin.
2. Hard Enamel Pins
Tumblr media
The best thing about hard enamel pins is that they look more premium and the surface is smoother to the touch compared to soft enamel. Because the enamel is almost flush with the metal edge, the touch is almost completely flat from the center of the metal to the edge, so the overall look is smooth and flat. The production method of hard enamel pins is similar to that of soft enamel pins, but the difference is the use of enamel in this step of the process. Soft enamel is simply poured into the metal grooves and then dried, while hard enamel is poured into the metal grooves until the enamel overflows into the metal grooves, then dried, and then the enamel is polished to the same level as the metal edges, and then plated, which is the reason why hard enamel is not perfectly flush. why hard enamel is not perfectly flush. Compared with soft enamel pins, hard enamel pins will also be more expensive, but it is worth it, especially in important occasions to highlight the high class feeling of hard enamel, and for some cute designs, such as cartoon designs, anime designs, hard enamel will also be more suitable than soft enamel, because soft enamel has a stronger concave and convex, which will cut down on the rounded feeling of the cute elements, so you can be assured that hard enamel can be used boldly so you can feel free to use hard enamel to make your pins.
3. Epoxy Pins
Tumblr media
Epoxy pins are clear and reflective, and they have a smooth surface in the shape of a dome, as if covered with a layer of glass. Epoxy resin can be used in combination with most of the pins, such as covering a thin layer of epoxy resin on top of the soft enamel and hard enamel, after the reflection of the light, the inner pattern will become more beautiful and bright, and the epoxy resin can also well protect the inner pattern from being scratched and damaged.
However, epoxy resin pins are mainly used in combination with digital printing and UV printing, for one thing, it can retain the color and all the details of the pattern changes, and for another, it can produce badge designs that have complex patterns but require small sizes, which is also the biggest advantage of epoxy resin pins over soft enamel pins and hard enamel pins. Meanwhile, its production cost is also relatively low like soft enamel pins, which is suitable for most of the guests with low budget.
4. 3D Metal Pins
Tumblr media
3D metal pins are a new type of pins that are completely different from the three previously mentioned pins. It has a very strong three-dimensional effect that can portray an intricate look and you can also feel every detail of the design, 3D metal pins can be described as lifelike, which is definitely a very right choice if your design requires more than 2 layers of appearance while maintaining elegance, especially for making pins about people, objects and landscapes.
3D metal badge has high durability, basically it can be used for several years, but please be careful not to scratch the surface, because the metal covered by plating on the surface is not a hard stone, so please take good care of it when you use it.3D metal badge can also be used together with colors, the specific design needs to be based on your design drawings and requirements, you can talk to the supplier to put forward your requirements, ideas, and they will tell you the best They will tell you the best suggestion.
5. Skeleton Badge
Skeleton badges are relatively a special kind of badges, because there are more constraints to make this kind of badges. The first is the design, not all designs are suitable for openwork badges, such as images and complex curves, the most suitable design for this type of badge is text and simple curves. But the text is also required, this is the second limitation, the material, openwork badges generally use stainless steel or iron to produce, which requires the design of the line can not be too thin, otherwise the use of the process will break. The third is the color, skeleton badges generally can only use the color of the metal, pure gold, pure silver and so on. Of course, you can also use soft enamel or printing process, but whether you can use other colors need to be based on your design, the specific design and requirements can talk to the supplier.
6. Write in the end
No matter what type of badge, it depends on your design and requirements, because the process itself has differences and constraints, you can send your design to the supplier and then explain your requirements in detail, they will give you professional advice and reference.
In addition, color-wise gold, silver and black are the most commonly used metal colors, most of the custom enamel pins mentioned above use these three colors, of course if you need other colors you can also talk to the supplier. For accessories, the standard butterfly clutch or magnet is used to hold it in place, the butterfly clutch is solid, cheap and versatile, but it will leave holes in clothing and other objects to use, if you are worried about holes in your bag or fine long sleeve shirts, you can also use the magnetic accessory, but avoid strenuous exercise or he will slip away from your clothing, in addition to the other accessories available for you to choose from if you want to give it as a gift or sell it as a beautiful item, there are also various types of packaging, velvet boxes, wooden boxes, paper boxes, etc. The good news is that these boxes can also be customized with your logo, make your request and the supplier will show these to you for you to choose from.
After you have decided to customize your exclusive pins, what is the next step? Finding the right supplier! At HesanK, we have professional salespersons to provide you with reasonable advice, strong manufacturing capacity and supply ability to meet your customization requirements, various types of accessories and packaging to make your products more exquisite, ready to go, contact us today to discuss how we can customize for you or your company.

What’s that noise? Is it the caw of something out of sight high overhead? A who-who-who echoing out of the darkness? A grrrr coming from the rustling underbrush? The crash, crash of something large moving through the trees?
No! It’s the sound of our latest Kickstarter launching!
Celebrate Fall with our Eerie Animal Enamel Pins!
Fall is the season of spook. Get your Autumn on—literally!—by donning one (or more!) of our eerie animal enamel pins! These realistically rendered, gorgeous pins feature different animals indigenous to northern areas of North America and Europe surrounded by elements of their natural habitats.
For our first merchandise-only campaign, Duck Prints Press approached the spectacular artist Aceriee (Instagram | Tumblr @aceriee-art | Twitter) and asked her to let her imagination run wild. The results are gorgeous, unique, and perfect for the season: 7 animals at their spooky, creepy, scary best, depicted in the rich colors of fall. Seasonal enough to enhance any autumn outfit, classy enough for year-round wear.
All the pins for this campaign are 2 in x 2 in (5 cm x 5 cm) and feature black nickel metal with soft enamel color work coated by a clear epoxy finish. They have two attachment posts with silver butterfly closures and feature either 6 or 8 colors, one of which glows in the dark (which varies in each pin).
This is a tiered release pin campaign (and our first-ever art-only project!)
At our initial funding goal ($1,500), backers can pick the Crow and Wolf pins (buy one or both or multiples of either/both!)
If we exceed $3,500 in backing, all backers will be able to choose from among four pins: Crow, Wolf, Moose, and Bear.
If we exceed $6,000 in backing, all backers will be able to choose from among six pins: Crow, Wolf, Moose, Bear, Raccoon, and Owl.
If we exceed $9,000 in backing, all backers will be able to choose from among eight pins: Crow, Wolf, Moose, Bear, Raccoon, Owl, Fox, and the not-yet-revealed Deer.
At $10,000, we’ll offer another unrevealed option: Bobcat. And, if we reach $11,000, we’ll offer out tenth and last pin, which is—of course!—a Duck!
Mix and match, pick your favorites, buy enough for all your friends, or just get one—you’re not going to want to miss this one chance to get these spectacular fall-themed animal pins!
The campaign is live now, and will run through Sunday, November 27th, 2022.
Ready to learn more? Check out our campaign page NOW!
Also—want an exclusive extra pin? Back us on Patreon or ko-fi at the $10/month or $25/month level and get a backer-only bonus!
Love what we do? Want to help us spread the word? We love signal boosts, so please share this on the social media platform(s) of your choice!

I have some more Angelology III pins to share! These are redesigns of pins from Angelology I.
Flying Seraph will be 1.6 inches long, with gold plating and yellow glitter accents.
Throne Angel will be 2.1 inches wide, with dyed metal and soft enamel + epoxy.
If you like these designs, they're already funded! So you can pledge for them now, and others at the campaign page.
While we're on the topic of Angelology III, it's the end of week two of the campaign, so here's a recap of all the unlocked pins.
Tumblr media
And all the available addons!
Tumblr media
The next pins to unlock are Angelic Messenger Wolf and Owl, we're about $800 from funding them.
Tumblr media
We have seven days until the campaign ends, so be sure to pledge and share the campaign while you can! If we fund all our current goals, I have some more stretch goals I'd like to add including alternate colorways and freebie pins.
Tumblr media
I am considering swapping out the final pin goal at $21K for alternate colorways or freebie pins, to raise a bit more campaign interest. So please let me know your preference in the poll below.
For any goals we don't fund, they'll be available in the Backerkit survey to unlock based on an order quantity goal. So don't worry if there's a pin you really want that's not yet funded, it will get a second chance! I'm also hopeful we'll see a surge of pledges towards the end of the campaign, when the campaign reminders go out.
Finally, here's a reminder for international backers: If you pledge for even just $1, you’ll get a coupon for the leftovers once they’re on Etsy. With this coupon you’ll be able to get the leftovers at the campaign prices, and Etsy will handle VAT and other import fees. Kickstarter does not allow a coupon as part of the campaign rewards, so I can only mention it on social media, not on the campaign page.
