Craig Tucker Character Analysis: Canon Overview, Pt. 1

So, this guy right here is pretty popular, both as a fictional 4th grade student at South Park Elementary, and as a phenomenon in the South Park fandom onto whom masculine behavioral and aesthetic ideals are projected wildly. I wanted to dig into the character because it’s honestly fascinating that this fictional little space dweeb has been some kind of teen heartthrob for like 20 years. This long ass post is part 1 of my analysis of his character in the series, but it’s largely setting the stage for an analysis of fanon Craig as I’m interested in comparing the evolution of his canon characterization to his fandom reception over the years.

Part 1 here examines Craig’s initial role in the series as a troublemaker and his dynamic with Butters as playground law enforcers in the early seasons, and there will likely be 2-3 parts total for canon (part 2 has now been posted here). Hopefully, by breaking it up, people can more easily find parts they’re interested in (for instance, I’ve seen recent renewed interest in Craig and Butters as schoolyard bullies together) and nobody will think I’m all that mentally ill for dedicating so many words to this fictional gay autistic asshole. Here we go!

Craig Tucker: Troublemaker

Early on, Craig is introduced as a character with behavioral issues. In “Rainforest Shmainforest” (S03E01), Craig’s speaking debut, Mackey reveals Craig is sent to his office every day for misbehavior. Craig’s shtick in the early seasons is flipping people off and being shown waiting outside Mr. Mackey’s office, where he has likely been sent for flipping people off. This lands Craig a reputation as a troublemaker, which is why Cartman chooses him as worst-behaved kid in “Tweek vs. Craig” (S03E05). The glimpse into Craig’s home life in this episode reveals his family to be uncommunicative and not terribly emotionally involved. Also, they all flip each other off all the time:

Barry, Craig and Brains are all autistic, and while Brains knows he's autistic and is diagnosed (technically he diagnosed himself but yanno), Barry and Craig have absolutely no idea. while Brains is immediately able to tell they're both neurodivergent and just thought the two of them already knew

Barry thinks he has a weird disease that makes him rip his sleeves (is actually a stim he does) and Craig is completely clueless and thought he was just shy and weird (is actually a former gifted kid). their needs were both ignored as kids and thus they have no idea they're neurodivergent.

imagine they're reading about autism on The Interwebs™ right, and they start relating to pretty much all the traits listed, and they're looking at each other like "dude that's me.... wait what if we've actually been autistic this entire time??" and then Brains walks in like "... yeah, of course you two are autistic. what, you didn't know?" and Barry and Craig just give him this blank look and go "...... no"

He told Stan he’d call it even if Stan looked after Stripe until he was out. Tweek was away for the summer and he knew Stan wouldn’t let anything happen to her since he’s a massive animal lover

• Definitely needs an Explanation what autism is • He tries really hard to do everything for you • Tries to avoid any sensory issues, speaks for you in case of non-verbality, gets you stuff from your hyper fixation/ special interest(s), etc • Protects you for dear god • Any abliest gets a fist across their face, by the star quarterback • If you're anything like me, you get overly panicked when you aren't in your time plan • So stan specifically tries to keep reminding you of the time when playing, so you keep the time in mind • Listens to you rambling • Always forgets what certain words mean • "Are you uhh uhm.. what was the word?" • Won't treat you much differently, only like the needed things he changes • really likes your style • Helps you find new clothing, but is super unaware 💀 • Will grab kids clothing or something, but usually not something you would wear

☆-kyle:

• Does a lot of research about autism • Also 'interviews' you to find out, what he needs to know • Like if it's okay to hug, what to do when you have meltdowns, etc • Tries to show interest in your hyperfixation but ends up irritating you, because he acts like he knows more • Still shows interest but with less enthusiasm (enough to seem genuine (which he is) though) • Sets strick times for playing, he heavily relays on time plans • Overprotective. • He may infantilize you without noticing • If it bothers you, he'll try super hard to stop though • He's pretty sarcastic • Then he realises you may not understand that it was sarcasm • "I looove hanging out with cartman" ... - All the adults in South Park have called Tweek and Craig their “Smol Beans” at least once

- Karen and Tricia (Craig’s little sister) are besties, Tricia teaches Karen to stick up for herself, and Karen has tea parties with her. They both have a cute lil’ crush on each other and their brothers always tease them about it

- Kenny doesn’t comb his hair often because it’s overstimulating for him

- Butters is a musical savant, he can do multiple types of dance, play drums, guitar, and probably some others instruments that I’m forgetting.

- Kevin (Kenny’s brother) has a big ol’ crush on Shelly, but he has as much rizz as a chunk of dirt, so their interactions are incredibly awkward and short

- Jimmy is the kind of guy to shout “Eureka!” when he comes up with a good joke /hj

- Mysterion has one-sided beef with mint berry crunch because everyone talks about how cool it is that he has REAL powers, and he’s a REAL superhero

- Y’know how Randy is South Park’s Lorde, and Mr Garrison is South Park’s Trump? Cartman starts a YouTube channel and becomes South Park’s Trisha Paytas /hj

- Craig is deadpan autistic, while Butters and Kenny are overly expressive autistic

- Craig reads creek fan fiction

- Tweek however, freaks out at the idea of it because some fics are pretty accurate and he becomes convinced that people are watching him

- While Stan was dating Wendy at this time, when Nichole beat Heather’s ass at tabletop games, he got a lil crush 🤭

- Kenny has the eyes of a ghostly Victorian child and it’s weird and freaky cuz he makes an UNCOMFORTABLE amount of eye contact

South Park College Headcanons

I lost power for most to the day today, so I sat at a coffee shop and just killed time writing down headcanons for every SP character I could think of.

there's alot of them, but hopefully somebody out there finds these fun

Butters

Gender fluid / non-conforming

Saved up enough to move into dorms away from their parents

Autistic and very gullible still

has learned to stand up for themself and their friends better

Got fed up in senior year and spiked Cartman's drink w/ laxatives and locked him outside at a house party

Ppl secretly fear them a lil after that

Kept their baby face and a bit of chub

Still plays for Stan's death metal band

has a strange relationship w/ Kyle (who's grappling w/ some denied queerness)

still an absolute sweetheart

drinks at parties and smokes w/ friends, even tho everyone assumes they dont

their parents still totally suck

Kenny

revolving door of jobs cuz he gets bored easily, but is always selling weed on the side

Ran into more drug problems through highschool after his troubles cheesing

Okay so I have the headcanon that Chip grew up in a rich family who liked having a smart autistic child but hated the other symptoms (ex. getting overstimulated, having emotional dsyregulation) so would punish any sign of autistic symptoms.

Which is how Override (at the time, a nameless alter) formed: as a protector/prosecutor to keep Chip from experiencing/remembering violence whenever the situation called for it.

It was extremely active until Chip moved out of the house in college, where it went dormant...

Until Craig, who didn't know that there were multiple users, installed the Override into it, giving it its name.

So Override became active again, but this time Chip could semi-remember the switches but wasn't aware that this was a pre-existing issue resurfacing.

Eventually, Chip ends up being forced to go on vacation (mostly because even by C.O.G standards he was getting too banged up) and during that time period, Override is able to calm down and ends up figuring out how to be a protector/prosecutor in a bit of a healthier way (also made its existence known to Chip).

The two are still adapting to being a newly discovered system but they have some help from friends.

(fun fact i actually have a fic on Ao3 that while not focusing more on chip/override's backstory it does talk about override's existence and how they act vs how chip acts)

(said fic also features a rare pair and if you know you know /silly)

Also everyone loves the fire hose tail and honestly I'm glad!!! The reason why I added it to his design was that I wanted to add to the firefighter aesthetic and I'm glad it turned out good!!

Analysis Of Why Fanon Creek Sucks

The fandom portrayal of Creek, as well as Tweek and Craig on their own, makes me really angry. I don’t understand why people choose to be in a fandom, get invested in the characters and the content, but then make the choice to butcher their personalities.

This will tackle the aspects of their relationship and them as characters simultaneously, since it goes a little hand in hand; misrepresenting their relationship also means misrepresenting their personalities.

You can disagree with me, because people see characters differently, but this is based off of my own observations and opinions. I will stand by this unapologetically, and you can pry this from my cold and dead hands.

People really love making gay relationships (be that WLW or MLM) fall into gendered stereotypes. While they can, and certainly do, it does not fit Tweek and Craig. People tend to always want to shove one character into the helpless, wimpy, and annoyingly submissive role, whilst their partner is some toxic, dominant alpha male. This bothers me for many reasons, because Tweek and Craig are complex characters. They can’t, and shouldn’t, be dumbed down to such simple traits. Craig and Tweek are human and humans are complicated.

Craig always falls into the “alpha” category. He’s controlling, cold, and borderline abusive in every way possible. Tweek is always his bitch, for lack of any other comparison, unable to defend himself and constantly relying on Craig. He’s molded into a crybaby that can’t do anything on his own and can’t throw a punch or anything of the sort.

The issue comes forth when you compare this to their canon relationship.

Tweek relies on Craig, yes, but not to the extent people make it out to be. Craig provides him support and unconditional love no matter what, and Tweek does the same. Craig has never been shown to be cruel to Tweek intentionally, or ever really; the closest we’ve gotten to that was the episode with the Buddha Box and the time he tried to dumb down Tweek’s anxieties with logic. I guess TFBW could kind of apply here, but that was honestly just petty relationship drama between two little kids. Yeah, friendly reminder: they are TEN. Everyone makes mistakes, children especially. Craig has never treated Tweek like garbage, although a lot of people seem to think that, since more fan works than I’d like to admit portray him that way.

Craig in general is a bit of an asshole at times, yeah, but literally who isn’t in this show? Be honest. And don’t say Butters, we’ve all seen some of the shit he does.

(This next paragraph will be going in line with how I see Craig as autistic coded, so skip past it if that’s not your cup of tea !! <3) Treating Craig like he’s an emotionless, apathetic monster because of how he acts rubs me the wrong way, and it always has. He has a lot of traits of someone on the autism spectrum when it comes to handling other people’s feelings, because we’ve seen him try to dispel Tweek’s anxieties with logic numerous times, which is something I and many other autistic individuals do. He doesn’t really understand or empathize with how Tweek felt at first, but once Tweek explained that, no, logic won’t help or soothe me, Craig just changed his tactics and listened, instead. He’s doing his best to assist, because he loves and cares about Tweek, but he wasn’t doing it right at first because he just didn’t get it. That doesn’t make him an asshole, that doesn’t make him a sociopath, and that doesn’t make him an abusive partner. He was trying and he still is.

As for Tweek, GOD - where do I even begin with how people portray him?

A lot of fans apparently saw Tweek and only took away the anxious and paranoid side of him. They snatched this up, combined it with the typical traits of romanticized anxiety, made him a defenseless crybaby, and called it a day! And I hate it. Tweek isn’t... at all how a lot of people make him seem. He’s shown to be aggressive, and protective, and LOUD!! He’s not quiet and submissive in the slightest. His tics (the vocal ones mostly, obviously) are part of the main reason he’s loud, but he’s also just... a loud person in general. When he freaks out, he doesn’t do it silently; he starts screaming and running in circles because the president made another dumb tweet and now they’re all going to die because North Korea hates them so he’d better go tell Craig because their doom is impending and all-encompassing and inescapable. He sent Craig to the hospital after their fight, like he beat his ASS, he doesn’t need Craig to defend him and treat him like a toddler.

I’ve seen quite a few people also ignore his tics. For whatever reason, they act like they’re nonexistent. It shouldn’t just be erased from his character. People think that taking away his tics is an instant fix for his mental illness and that’s so wrong??? That isn’t how that works. Removing his tics doesn’t take away the underlying and constant anxiety he has. It feels like they only do this to make him more “normal”, less alienated. They just write it out because they don’t understand his tics and how they work/affect him.

Why do people do this?

To circle back to the first point I made at the beginning of this post, I think that the butchering of their personalities stems from the inherent need to confine relationships to a box: there has to be one person who is more protective and dominant and one person who can’t do anything for themself. They can’t write a relationship unless it’s like that, because maybe that’s all they’ve seen, or maybe they’ve never been in a relationship, or maybe they don’t understand same-gendered relationships (even though they are no different than heterosexual relationships....) Creek isn’t like that, and it never will be, and it never has been.

A lot of actual published books - coughs gags Colleen Hoover - show relationships like this, and I think it’s ruined a lot of people when it comes to writing and understanding dynamics between characters. The material that they learned from had nothing but weirdly sexually abusive Andrew Tate-esque men and a meek little woman paired off and now it’s all that they know and understand. The popularization of literature like this really needs to stop, not only because of my dumb little South Park-inspired rant, but because it’s teaching a concerning amount of people that relationships like this are healthy and normal when they are anything but. Going off of this!!

I’d like to share my own take on Craig Tucker in regards to how I view him, + his asd. He’s my little meowmeow and I chose how to write him. >:) Oh my god this is a mess of thoughts. Some headcanons, some just straight up analysis. While I do enjoy a lot of fanon portrayals of Craig (and Tweek) as they are all valid and fun in their own ways and I love seeing everyone’s takes on them, I definitely do have my own favorites. There is no one way to interpret a character after all! That being said, Craig Tucker is a LOSER (affectionate). He’s a cringefail loser nerd and I hope he knows it. This man is a nerdy hyperfixated disaster who on the surface level only has three moods: bitchy, neutral, and adoration. He’s a sarcastic little bitch who always complains about the fucking bizarreness of everything that's going on around him. He does not want any part of it. He will flip it off. He will flip his family off. He will flip you off. He will flip off god. However, in some instances, family, friends and those special people (or guinea pigs) he doesn’t know how to express his emotions, and so he will fall back on the gesture as a means of affection. (i.e. when you insult your best friends as a sign of knowing each other for a long time sorta thing.) Most of the time, I think he’s just. Neutral. He’s going through life as boringly as he can and he likes it that way. He even brings this up: “Boring, just the way I like it.” And I hate to reach here, but as someone with autism myself, and I know others with this condition, a lot of the time we HATE change. Routines, schedules, boringness, its just the way to be, it’s not scary or weird, it’s just normality in a world of bizarreness. I don’t want to go on a spontaneous adventure, I need time and preparation to do things outside of normalcy, even if it is fun and a good change, I will need time to adjust. I could see Craig 100% being the same way.  Even in ‘Tweek x Craig’ he’s especially upset about the towns attention on him, as being in a ‘relationship’ with Tweek is a big change and is the first out of him and Tweek to go out of the way to try and solve the issue via the fake breakup. Another point here is his ‘problem-solving’ attitude. In ‘Put It Down’ he tries to ‘solve’ Tweek’s anxiety by distracting him, when what he needed to do was just talk to Tweek about his feelings. I’ve actually seen other autistic people say that this episode taught them how to better empathise with others, and truly it’s a guiding point for me as well! It’s a genuine good reminder to me that when my friends are upset maybe the best thing to do is just listen and affirm feelings. Thanks Craig :) Once again, he always has a neutral expression, he doesn't smile often and we don’t even see him smile much in tfbw when your character takes a selfie with him. I like to hc that he just has a resting bitch face lmao. But a lot of autistic people genuinely struggle to convey or even feel emotions in the same neurotypical way. This can often be called masking, and because I don’t want to ramble for forever, I definitely recommend looking up autistic masking for yourself. His voice is even neutral and monotone, which can be an autism thing! Some asd individuals have trouble putting emotion into their voices and can seem un-caring, when thats not true, and it’s just more natural to be monotone. I definitely don’t think Craig is without emotions, he’s just not going at expressing his feelings (which I’d love to talk about in contrast for his relationship with Tweek but that’s for another day as this post is long enough). For example, he does seem worried about Tweek’s anxiety in ‘Put It Down’ and even asks how Tweek is when they’re broken up in tfbw. He’s worried about how others see him being gay in ‘Tweek x Craig’ and he’s infamously known for his love for his guinea pig, who he’s upset at the notion of someone insulting the love for his pet in ‘Tweek vs Craig’. Anyway, why do I think he’s a loser? Well as @craigrights put it in our dm’s, Craig:

- gets NO bitches except one meth addict

- needs braces

Which. Yeah. Thank you Syd, you’ve summed it up. (Yeah absolute hc that he has fucked up teeth and needs to wear braces lmao.) But other then that, I love the popular fanbase headcanon that Craig is just a major nerd for space stuff. He has space memorabilia around his bedroom from what we can see in tfbw. I’d also like to note that aside from the little boxes on the floor, which can be probably cleaned up in a minute or two, his room is really clean! An absolute clean nerd (autism). Weirdo.

So yeah, I can absolutely see him being hyperfixated on space and astromony, and adores it. I can totally see him being super quiet only giving the occasional blunt one-liners but then flipping into rambling about space whenever you give him the chance. He loves Stripe, and all the variations of stripe over the years which is honestly really heart-warming. It really does crush the whole ‘bad-boy’ persona when some of the characters chalk him up to be a troublemaker. This kid loves animals. DORK.  Last thing is the fictional red racer tv show, I could sooo see him having a mini-fixation on it too. When Cartman asks him to fight Tweek in ‘Tweek vs Craig’ he responds that he’ll only do it after red racer. THIS BOY HAS WORKED RED RACER INTO HIS AUTISM SCHEDULE.. A LOSER. Anyway this was an absolute ramble!! And not even all my thoughts on this character, I’m forgetting a LOT and it’s sorta sad how much I could probably add to this. I could also talk a bit about his character relationships in my own personal au? headcanon? Idk what you’d call it. I’d love to ramble about Tweek too, and especially Creek headacnons as a whole as I had to personally hold myself back from adding a bunch of Creek into this ramble. He's so autistic it's insane

He has shutdowns way too often :(

Even more often as he grows up

He's associated flipping people off with being able to leave class (to go to counselor's office) so he does it when he gets too overwhelmed at school

Because he's never been taught it's wrong, too, but that's secondary

When he has shutdowns he goes non-verbal too

Which has gotten everyone to assume he's simply not too talkative and let him be

Tweek eventually learnt what Craig's shutdowns were and he helped him out with them every time since then

For example getting Craig out of class when he looked like he was getting overwhelmed

Craig's so grateful for this<3

He doesn't get an autism diagnosis until 15 for some reason

Even though he didn't talk until he was 4- it's really weird it took him so long to get it actually

He had a really hard time coping with his diagnosis at first

So much internalized ableism

He probably locked himself in his room for a couple days after that

He told Tweek before he told anyone else

And Tweek helped him come to terms with it<3

Now he's fine with it :)

He hates how noise cancelling headphones feel, and instead wears earplugs to block noise

He doesn't ask teachers for permission because they can't see the earplugs with his hat anyways

His spin is totally space

He Loves space

He's infodumps to Tweek about it really often, Tweek loves it even though he doesn't understand even a third of it

He has those glow in the dark stars on his room's ceiling and a projector

His style never changed much through his life, comfortable clothes, nothing really specific

YES you can't imagine how happy i am to be doing this i can't talk about degrassi to anyone and the fandom is kinda dead

2. a compelling argument for why my fave would never top or bottom: this question is crazy cause degrassi characters get to be like... 19 at the oldest (not that they die, the just age out and cycle out of the show) so let's imagine them older. now other problem there's like 36 000 of them total starting in the 80s and ending in the 2010s BUT if i pick a fave let's go with Eli Goldsworthy and make a bold claim: he would never top. in canon he's straight (the writers are wrong on this one) but i fully believe that any woman he has ever been with/will ever be with pegs him. he's simply too weak sauce to have the energy to top anybody. he has other things on his mind.

6. which ship fans are the most annoying: like i mentionned, the fandom is kinda dead so i don't really know fandom opinions apart for the yt comments when degrassi was still on youtube for free (booo hbo fuck you) BUT! i will say that people got really invested in Craig/Manny for some reason (he was always awful to her) and started hating Ellie as a result. Now yes Ellie was super misogynistic towards Manny, but that's not really a reason for the fandom to then be super misogynistic towards her. I love Ellie Nash she's my queen get off her back! yes she's whiny and a bitch. it's literally fine.

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about: OOUUH!! A lot of people hate Connor, which is SO WRONG. They hate him for stealing girls' underwear (which i will admit is creepy and weird) but like... degrassi is the everybody gets a second chance show... yall love Peter (so do i!!) and he literally distributed revenge porn of Manny so..... you just hate Connor cause you can't handle his autistic swag. but i can. i love him. him and jenna are my favourite couple and he's aspec in my head. 21. part of canon i think is overhyped: i'm really having to think about this one cause idk if any part is really hyped all that much lmao degrassi fans, we love to complain...... i'll say a part of canon that i wish wasn't there is Adam's death. JT and Cam felt earned and realistic, but Adam... idk it just came out of nowhere..... and he's literally one of ma faves.....

22. my favourite part of canon that everyone else ignores: omgomgomgomg Marco and Ellie hooking up post graduation. for context Marco's like BEEN fully gay. and he hooks up with Ellie out of sheer codependency which is, in my opinion, HILARIOUS. also, he says that the worst part is he didn't want it to stop (they didn't go all the way) and if the writers of that episode weren't COWARDS he would've had a real reflection on the fluidity of sexuality but oh well. it's an iconic throwaway plotline and one of the foundational building blocks in my evil Craig/Ellie/Marco codependent love triangle polycule

- Callie is the worst person to watch horror movies with because she just yells at the main character for being stupid the whole time and tries to guess every plot twist

- besides Craig, Marie is the other half of the reason Three’s so good in battle. They both main the charger and Marie used to do sniping practice with Three before and after they knew she was Marie and not just Agent 2. Now that she’s captain they still do sniping practice but Three’s got incredible aim and almost never misses so they just use the time to talk and catch up with each other.

When she first got to the surface she mainly blasted off the book’s songs like into the light and fly octo fly on loop and hummed those everywhere but after being on the surface for so long she got into more music and does it with a variety of music lol

- Callie and Marie tried to take Four to wahoo world but she was too short to ride anything but the kiddie rides and they almost left because of how upset Four was till Marie threatened the workers and Callie had to bribe them to let them stay in the park and go on the rides 😭

- you already know this one you literally came up with it with me but I’m including this anyways Cus I love it, since Callie is a big fun reef squid she’s got strong enough tentacles to move them on her own like octolings can, and she primarily uses this to pick up Four and carry her around the house. Also extra limbs to cuddle with <3

- Marie bullies Eight (lovingly) for maining the clash blaster and Eight complains about it to Captain cuttlefish everytime. Three had to explain weapon meta to him so he could understand what the big deal was

- Neo 3 is obsessed with super heroes the zipcaster levels helped them connect with 3 Callie and Marie a lot more and they get way too into it everytime they did one of them

So south park, I'm like, neutral to kinda iffy on? Cause on one paw, I vaguely know there's criticisms abt the show. On the other paw I literally don't know anything else abt it. I have never watched an episode (It's probably not my cup of tea I can't stomach gross out humor or gore dsgsdfh) so like I'm not uncomfy with it personally, but I'm saying that as someone who has zero idea what it is beyond 'haha offensive stereotypes show'.

So I can't really comment on the validity of these statements. However,

I do like silver being a Local Anxiety Beast like get that boyo some coping mechanisms.
