11, 12, 16!
11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too by Jomny Sun was so sweet and so fun. I also just read Small Country by Gaël Faye yesterday and it was very good too.
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Moon cakes by Suzanne Walker looked so cute but the writing was just bad.
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
Huckleberry Finn lol. I read Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and…it was definitely like, the wrong time for me to be reading it, my brain was dead from school. But still, I didn’t think it was that good, good-but not life changing or anything.

hii there! what are your favourite books / do you have any recommendations?
Hello, Lovely~
I've read... so many books over the years, it's almost a wonder I ever had time for much else. ^_^;
I believe I may have mentioned some of these books before, but there are several that come to mind for possible recommendations. These are all the books that immediately spark a memory, which linger with me even seemingly ages after last exploring their pages.
The first I would recommend is cresando by Amy Weiss. Love, loss, heartache, and the story of two souls who find each other over and over again, in each and every lifetime, who choose to find each other over and over again, who drift through the cosmos in an eternal dance, dancing in the spaces between lifetimes. It remains one of the most breathtaking stories I've read in the past few years, pure poetry captured onto each page.
If you have a chance, I would recommend searching for Two From Arcadia by Lucine Finch on Project Gutenberg's database. It's a short read, a lyrical poem of contrasting viewpoints, but it's woven together with beautiful artwork that not only grounds the mystical words, but also enhances the sensations, almost fully immersing you into the story. I happened upon it by chance today, and I am now seeking out an original edition to add to my collection.
It's been a decade since I've read them, but I remember I was obsessed with the Skinjacker Trilogy (Everlost, Everwild, Everfound) by Neal Shusterman when I was a teenager. There was an incredible amount of worldbuilding to those books that still leaves me kind of in awe, and I still tend to think of every once in a great while. And despite it being over 10 years since I've read them, I still remember the names of my two favourite characters, the reasons why I loved them so much, and the bittersweet finale.
Another I finished recently is Jomny Sun's Everyone's a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too. Reading as a diary, this book (a very short read; I knocked it out in half an hour!) follows the story of an alien who has been sent to Earth on a reconnaissance mission, but there is an underlying depth that reveals some of the struggles of leaving your home and moving somewhere new, of finding a place within that newness, and the disconnect once one returns home, no longer quite fitting in when your views and perspective have changed.
Another story that actually follows along that thread is a story about a mouse that I read last year: Young Fredel by Cynthia Voigt. I know there's almost a stigma against adults reading children's stories, but as a former librarian and now an educator, I highly recommend that more adults read children's stories. It offers another way for us to connect with them, and sometimes they can teach even us old timers something valuable. Fredel, oh my little Fredel, had that same wide-eyed wonder and curiousity that so many of us have, and the story followed him through it all. I forget exactly how many chapters the story contained, but there were many moments that had me on the edge of my seat.
One of my favourite novels as of late is Eternal Life by Dara Horn. Following our protagonist, we're guided through several different lives, with many others that fall in between. Trapped, cursed, to eternal life with the sort-of antagonist due to a single mistake, a vow, an arrangement- I don't want to go too much in depth about this book, but I'm obsessed with it and have read it several times. This one does have some allusion to darker topics, just as a warning in advance.
I could go on for ages about the books I've enjoyed and would recommend, but I don't want to go on for too long. If you have a specific genre you're looking for luv, please let me know. I can give you more specific suggestions from there. ;)
I also have a Goodreads Account if you want to peruse more of my shelves. I know I have only a fraction of the books I’ve consumed mentioned on there, but it’s a start?
Thanks for the ask! :D

Everyone's a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too is the sweet, cute, and deceptively simple story of Jomny, an alien who doesn't fit in with his own people, who is sent to earth with the mission of learning about humans.
He's alone in a culture of other aliens who don't look like him and who all come in pairs, and he arrives on Earth feeling confused, lost, and unsure how to complete his mission. And then he starts talking to all the creatures he meets, makes friends, and learns how to be a friend in return.
Everyone has a different view of what the purpose of life is, on happiness, art, death, change, and becoming who you'll be. By talking to all of them, Jomny learns how to accept himself while helping them accept themselves. Not to mention the general uncertainty that being a changing being in the world brings.
It's a message we could all use right now

tagged by @deimos-the-wolf! like you, i don't actually watch that many shows, so i'm doing books instead. thanks for the tag <3
8 shows books to get to know me
all systems red by martha wells. explorations of autonomy, personhood, responsibility, exploitation, guilt, self-image, community, alienation, vulnerability, and trust, all wrapped up in a loving package of snark. this is the only book i've ever read (well, this and the others in the series) that i would and do recommend to everyone i know.
graceling by kristin cashore. sometimes a book shakes hands with your soul; this book went ahead and kissed me full on the mouth while it was at it. then we had a love affair during which no one got pregnant because neither of us want children and reproductive freedom is very important to us both. this book gave me hope when i had very little, and it also helped me better understand someone very important to me. it made me feel seen, and a little less broken.
hyperbole and a half by allie brosh. one of the best descriptions of depression i have ever encountered. also makes me laugh so hard i cry, every single time.
feminist theory: from margin to center by bell hooks. this book made me want to learn to think, not just about feminism but about theory of any kind. it opened the world to me in a way i will always be grateful for.
everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too by jomny sun. i don't need to write any books about my life philosophy because this book already exists.
19 ways of looking at wang wei by eliot weinberger. very slim little volume exploring meaning and how it is communicated via 19 translations of a single tang dynasty poem. hello!!
we are never meeting in real life by sam irby. sam irby is a master of making the poignant hilarious. she cracks my heart like an egg. i would sell my soul to the devil to be half as funny as she is.
roget's thesaurus by...uh...roget? (i guess technically the version i have is bartlett's roget's thesaurus, but tbh i don't really care that much about what bartlett is bringing to the table. sorry bartlett.) this is perhaps my most beloved reference book. it's not just about the words, it's about the relations between them and the way in which these relationships have been represented outside of the brain. also, it's a lifesaver for the tip of the tongue phenomenon, aka my one true archnemesis. alternative: wheelock's latin. first language textbook i ever had. i saw those declension tables and that was it for me, i was hooked forever.
tagging @grammarpedant, @uovoc, @loreofcardigan, @stupid-lemon-eater, @clevermanka, @dangerliesbeforeyou, @ctl-yuejie, @psqqa, @littleragondin, and @lockedinabookstore, but as always feel free to ignore <3
#basically if you take morphemes and then organize them in some logical fashion i will give you my heart on a platter#it doesn't matter if you're not in the market for platters with hearts on them. you're getting one#i once ranked types of reference books from best to worst and i can't remember now but i'm pretty sure thesaurus was first#followed by concordance#dictionaries were up there but i just want to point out there are at least two other types of reference books that rank above dictionary#so to everyone observing my french dictionary journey with nonplussed indulgence: okay now imagine how totally absolutely#cuckoo feral bananapants i must be about this thesaurus. if it ranks above the french dictionary i've committed the next 9 months#of my life to reading for 1-2 hours per day#if anyone ever needs me to swear an oath they would do well to get me to swear on roget's thesaurus. bible schmible amirite ladies#also get this: it's the heaviest book i own and i can use it to squash the really scary bugs <3#i just throw the book at them from several feet away. somehow the binding has withstood this treatment#unrelatedly my downstairs neighbor hates my guts. but what are you gonna do.#books#tag games#i did try to think of 8 shows at first but i could only come up with six that seemed like really clear contenders#schitt's creek; living with yourself; severance; natsume yuujinchou; russian doll; and arrested development#because it's not asking for my favorite shows (though several of these are also my favorites)...it's for shows 'to get to know me'#likewise i have like 20 other favorite books on a par with these but these 8 are the ones where i feel like if you read them#certain things about me will begin to make more sense lol#someday i will meet someone who cares about roget's thesaurus as much as i do and that is the day i will learn once and for all#if i am capable of true intimacy#(i'm joking)#(or am i? 👀)

FULLY FUNDED!!
Tumblr media
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sjblasko/the-flowers-need-love-to-grow-too
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone for your generosity and support! I'm so excited to move ahead with this project in November!!
There are still 30 hours left to pledge, and since I didn’t really plan for stretch goals, I’m going to be using the money raised past the initial goal to support other self published, disabled, chronically ill, young, or just lesser known authors by buying their books to put in little free libraries around my area <3 <3
A few of the books on my list are:
You Can Do All Things by @thelatestkate
Tumblr media
Echoes by Miranda Marie @thefirerainchronicles (lovely lovely human and talented beyond words author!! she has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and dyslexia and a gorgeous instagram feed @/sincerelymirandamarie)
Tumblr media
Can I see? By @amandamccoyart (a children’s book by a visually impaired author/illustrator who is a friend of mine! She’s amazing and wonderful and her book is so so good!)
Tumblr media
everyone’s a aliebn when ur a aliebn too by jonny sun (a more well known author/illustrator, but also a book that has helped me so. much.)
Tumblr media
(these are just a few examples ^^)
All of these books are ones that I have found comfort in when I'm in a low mental health place, books that I have found pieces of myself through, and books that have made me laugh when everything else felt like it was falling apart. I would love to have the means to support and bring more recognition to these authors in this way! Plus it means their books will be given out for free (while they still get paid for their work) and those books might happen to be found by the very people who need them most!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who pledged or reblogged or supported me outside of the kickstarter. None of this would be possible without you and I love y’all <3 <3 <3
(also if you have suggestions to add to my list please do!!!)

(more book asks bc i love 1) you and 2) your takes)
3, 4, 13, 17
Madison if you were not a married woman…
3. What were your top five books of the year?
Not in any particular order…
Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery
Blood Like Magic by Liselle Sambury
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too by Jomny Sun
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Liselle Sambury and Bethany C. Marrow and Lucille Clifton!
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
Not including stuff for school I DNF’d Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller. Including school I detested An Outpost of Progress, Daisy Miller, and As I Lay Dying.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
A Song Below Water by Bethany C Morrow, Charming as a Verb by Ben Phillipe because I usually hate romance. I was surprised by The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky, it broke me out of a reading slump and I couldn’t put it down, but it has like, a lot of rape scenes that I skipped, and is written by a white author dealing with Inuit characters and mythology so I wouldn’t be surprised if it is not considered in a good light in that way, but I don’t know.
