You and Baekhyun had always been close and even if you hadn't been in the same company you were sure you'd have become friends. Bakehyun's group Exo and your group Red Velvet debuted not too far apart and you saw one another a lot. Baekhyun was the first one in EXO you noticed because he was so funny and friendly. You'd been so nervous back then and needed a more confident personality like Baekhun to bring you out of your shell and he did that. He was the first idol you became friends with and your friendship had stayed even years later when you'd both become successful. Then it turned into something more 3 years into your relationship. You started dating BTS' Jin a few years after your debut but just shy of your 1 year anniversary, he ended things with you. You were devastated and Baekhyun was there for you...then his girlfriend broke up with him later that same week. The timing was uncanny and you wallowed in your situations together. In an odd way, it made you feel closer to Baekhyun to go through something like this with him and you definitely became closer physically. You got drunk together and bonded over your pity, one thing led to another and you slept together. You couldn't remember all of it but recalled having fun and Baekhyun was very good. He said the same of you and jokingly offered his services if you ever needed them. The two of you laughed it off but found yourself in the same position 2 weeks later. From then it just become a deal, if you were both in the mood then you hooked up. There were no strings attached and it wouldn't change your friendship...atleast that's what you said. Neither of you even wanted a relationship so this seemed like the perfect solution. Baekhyun didn't want to date again because it hadn't worked. He didn't have enough time so he figured that was just not on the cards for him. Meanwhile, you still weren't over Jin. You didn't miss him anymore but you were scared to let another guy in and the emotional scars were still there. So it should've been perfect. You had the friendship part for comfort and the physical chemistry for sex but it wasn't as carefree as either of you pretended. You recognised you had feelings for Baekhyun and your members were always urging you to tell him. "You'll get hurt if you don't" Irene would always say and you knew she was right but couldn't bring yourself to tell him. You didn't think you could face rejection from someone so close to you again and didn't want to see the pity in Baekhyun's eyes as he looked at you. You knew he didn't feel the same way because it had been 2 years now and surely he'd have said something if he wanted this to be more? You suppose, you could've said the same about yourself but you could sense something in Baekhyun that told you he didn't feel the same way. Atleast not completely. You knew he cared for you a lot and at times thought he had caught feelings but there always seemed to be something there stopping him. You felt an invisible wall between you and knew if you pushed it, he'd just build it higher. So you ignored your feelings because there were more important things happening...like Baekhyun's enlistment.

Baekhyun's military service had been looming malevolently on the horizon for a while but it was finally here. You helped Baekhyun get everything sorted and offered as much support as possible. He didn't want to say a rushed goodbye to you when he was leaving for the airport so you spent a night together and that made everything more passionate. Baekhyun made you feel things nobody else could and you loved being with him. This was very much on your mind as you lay together and you sighed "I'm going to miss you" you said honestly and Baekhyun tightened his grip on you. "I'm going to miss you too" he said "but I'll be able to text sometimes and visit...". "I know but it's not the same and I worry about you. What if you hate it?". Baekhyun chuckled "well I don't think I'm going to love it". You made a humph noise and Baekhyun smiled "but I'll be fine okay? You don't have to worry about me. I want you to live your life as normal and it goes without saying, you should find other guys to treat you like this. You don't have to wait for me, you don't owe me anything and I'd never expect you to restrain yourself". You paused because this was the closest Baekhyun had ever come to describing your relationship...and it was to tell you to hook up with other guys. "I don't mind" you told him but Baekhyun shook his head "I want you to be happy with other guys, I won't get upset. You should be with other people" and you felt your heart break a little more but you nodded "okay". Baekhyun left for the military 2 days later and his words echoed in your head constantly. You knew he didn't have feelings for you but still, hearing it hurt. You told your members and they comforted you. "Not to be impolite but in some ways this is good" Joy said and Irene shot her a glare. "No it is! It's better you found out before he goes than you waiting 2 years only for him to tell you when he comes back. Plus out of sight really is out of mind, you won't have to see him for ages and can focus on other people". Wendy nodded "she's actually right, it'd be so much harder if you had to bump into him everywhere but you won't!". Irene and Seulgi nodded seeing the girls' point. "Plus this is good because it means you can hook up with more guys!" Yeri said "there's more to the world than Baekhyun". You smiled "it doesn't feel like it right now". "I know it doesn't but she's right" Irene said "and this time apart will show you that. So use this time to heal and have fun". You nodded "okay! I will" and vowed to use this time wisely. Fast forward to nearly 2 years later and you wanted to kick your naive self's butt! You had not used your time to hook up with tons of hot people and focus on you. You'd slept with a grand total of 2 people and one of those was your ex Jin. "Am I just incapable of making new connections? Can my brain only repeat things?" you asked your members the morning after and they laughed. "No of course not, just the familiar is less scary that's all. Plus you always said Jin was attractive so that's what this was". You agreed but didn't believe yourself. You'd kept in contact with Baekhyun the best you could during his enlistment and had called a few times. Despite everything you missed him a lot and couldn't wait for him to return. So much so that when Suho invited you to come and pick him up with him, Kai and Chanyeol you agreed. You were nervous the whole drive over and then when you saw Baekhyun you knew why no other guys had done it for you. They weren't him. Baekhyun spotted you and a big smile filled his face. You missed that smile and rushed to his with the boys. His members got to him first and then Baekhun was in front of you again. "Y/n" he smiled and opened his arms. You stepped into his hug and felt happy to be back in his arms. You went back with Exo to a small party Suho was throwing for Baekhyun with all the members and some of his friends. Baekhyun was catching you all up on everything you missed on the drive back and when he ran out of things to say the boys started chatting among themselves. "I'm really happy to see you again" Baekhyun said and you smiled "me too! I missed you". "I missed you too" he said and put a hand on your leg. Before this, you'd considered ending this friends-with-benefits deal but the second Baekhyun looked at you like that it went out the window. You disappeared together at his welcome home party and went right back into old habits not 24 hours after he'd left the military. "Wow you just really jumped back into that" Joy said when you confessed to the girls the next day. You sighed "I know but I couldn't help it. He looked at me with those big eyes of his and I was hooked". Irene sighed but Yeri shrugged "I don't see what the problem is, I think if you still want him after 2 years apart and he clearly still wants you then go for it. You're young and can settle down at any age. Have fun with the hot guy who wants you". Wendy nodded "I agree, just decide what you want this to be. If you want to date him then tell him but if you're happy for this just to be hooking up. No relationship then that's fine". The girls nodded but Irene carried on staring at you. "I won't get hurt" you told her and she sighed gently stroking your hair "if you say so". Baekhyun's members also found it funny that the night he came back he was with you and teased him about it. It started out funny but by the end Baekhyun was worried. "How does he have a girl waiting for him the second he's discharged?" Chanyeol asked "Chen only got that because he's married. The rest of us had to wait at least 48 hours, not 3!". Baekhyun laughed "guess you're just not as magnetic as me". "Oh please, you and Y/n are as old as time" Lay said and Xuimin nodded "I don't think it counts when you're basically a couple". Baekhuun paused "but we're not a couple, we're just friends with benefits". "You don't wait 2 years for your friend with benefits to get discharged" Kai said and Baekhyun looked at him "what do you mean? Y/n didn't get with anyone while I was gone?". "Not that we could tell but I mean she could've at some point" Chen pointed out. Baekhyun frowned and Suho shushed the guys "hey leave her alone, this is a good thing. Baekhyun has a girl who cares about him a lot and will always be there for him. Who cares what they define it as, they're happy together and that's all that matters". The guys nodded but Baekhyun felt jittery and anxious. He had no idea everyone considered the two of you a couple and now he thought about it he could see why. He was worried you'd gotten the wrong idea about what this was and wondered how he could correct it. Exo had a comeback a month after Baekhyun arrived back. It was a really quick turn around and Baekhyun got almost no time to readjust but he was happy to be in the new song. It turned out really well so Baekhyun was happy he did it. They were promoting it at award shows and Baekhyun was really enjoying being back...but he still had his worries about you. You weren't at the award show but Baekhyun figured there had to be something he could do to fix the situation he was in and then he spotted an idol he thought he was done with, watching him. You hadn't seen Baekhyun much because he'd been rushing to prepare for his new comeback. He'd be so busy with work and trying to get back integrated into society, see his family and friends etc. You totally got it and gave him space. He texted you last night apologising for his absence and you told him it was totally fine. You saw Exo win an award for their new song and were so proud of them all but especially Baekhyun. He'd jumped right back into work like it was nothing and you were biased but you thought he killed the latest comeback. You want to congratulate Baekyun and knew he always got home for award shows around 1 am so headed to his place with his favourite alcohol to celebrate. You were excited to see him and knocked on his door wondering how happy he'd be. 30 seconds passed and nobody opened the door so you knocked again. And then when more time went passed you wondered if Baekhyun was in. Maybe he'd stayed out longer or something. You were setting the drink down on the ground, getting ready to leave when the door opened and Baekhyun appeared. "Y/n?" he asked "what are you doing?". "I brought you something to celebrate your win...did I wake you?" you asked seeing his messy hair and how he was squinting. Baekhyun paused "aww that's so sweet thank you and erm no...". "I didn't?" you asked laughing "then why do you look so..." when someone else appeared behind him. "Where did you go?" a girl asked and you saw it was Seoyun and froze. Seoyun was Baekhyun's ex and according to pretty much everyone the love of his life. Their romance was one of the most famous in kpop history and their breakup even more so. It had been so romanticised that all fans were so sad when they broke up but always claimed they'd find each other again and it looked like they had. You of course knew Seoyun from when she did date Baekhyun and she smiled when she saw you "Y/n, is that you?". You nodded "Hi Seoyun...sorry I didn't realise you guys were...don't worry I'm leaving". Baekhyun paused "okay but I...I'll call you tomorrow?". "Sure" you said and Baekhyun went to hand you back the drink. "No keep it, you guys celebrate". "Wow are you sure?" Seoyun asked "it's a good bottle" and you nodded "sure!". "Thanks" she said wrapping an arm around Baekhyun's waist and you glanced at it without meaning to. "So goodnight!" you said and rushed off. Baekhyun closed the door feeling awful. He'd wanted to send you some sign but he didn't want it to hit you in the face like this. He saw the hurt in your eyes and it stuck with him. He cared about you and you were the last person he wanted to hurt. "You're not drinking your champagne" Seoyun said pushing his untouched glass towards him and Baekhyun shook his head "I'm not in the mood...for anything actually. Do you mind if we call a rain check?". You went back home and didn't plan on telling your members. You thought you were pathetic enough but the second Irene saw your face she knew something had happened. You burst into tears and told them all of it. "I'm such an idiot" you said while Seulgi hugged you. "No you're not" Wendy said but you shook your head. "You all told me to be careful and not get too invested but I did". "Y/n you didn't choose to fall in love with him" Joy said and you froze "I'm in love with him?". The girls looked at one another unaware you didn't know that. It made sense and you groaned "Oh God I am...and he's never stopped loving her" you cried and buried your face in your hands. The girls stayed up comforting you for several hours and expected you to be a mess the next day but you woke up before any of them and went for a run. You found when you were stressed or hurt the best thing to do was exercise because if your body was exhausted it was harder to think. So you got on the road and just kept running. You didn't pay attention to anything, hardly even traffic and just ran as far as you could until you had to stop. You struggled to sit down, your legs utterly exhausted and breathed so heavily your chest moved up and down. Despite it all you started crying, so much for your exhaustion plan. Once you'd finally calmed down you realised you didn't recognise this neighbourhood. Your phone wasn't getting any signal but there were some shops down the road. You stopped off at a cafe trying to work out where you were. You bought a Smoothie while you were there, figuring it'd be a long walk back when someone called your name. You turned to see Jin and cringed because you looked a mess and were meant to look hot when you saw ex. Jin didn't seem to care/notice though and greeted you warmly. "What are you doing all the way out here?" he asked. "Oh you know just out on a run" you laughed and Jin laughed "all the way from house?" before it clicked. Jin remembered you liked to run when you were upset "you did, didn't you?" he asked. You nodded "yeah...". Jin didn't want to pry so he just smiled "want a lift home?". Jin drove you back and sensing you didn't want to talk he did. He told you about his day and of course he'd already had a very eventful morning. He was telling you about a misunderstanding he got in with the barista and made you smile with his over the top his facial expressions. Jin smiled seeing you looked happier. When you reached your home he looked at you "you know you can always reach out to me if you need anything don't you?" He asked "above everything I'd like to think we're friends". You had no idea Jin felt like that so smiled "That's really sweet...thank you for telling me. I will reach out if I run too far away from house again". Jin smiled "of course or even if you just want to go for a coffee or meal or something. It's nice to see you laugh and I feel like I haven't seen you do that lately...anyway I'm here if you need anything" he said and you smiled "thank you" and got out the car. You walked inside and Yeri paused "was that Jin's car,". You nodded "I ended up running to the bakery on Tutland". "But that's like a 40 minutes drive" Wendy said. You nodded "yeah..." and the girls patted your arms in sympathy. "But it was okay because Jin saw me and offered me a lift back. He was really nice. I forgot how positive he is to be around". The girls exchanged glances and Irene stepped forwards "Y/n you shouldn't get into anything new right now". You nodded "I know and I'm not planning to, I just think Jin might be a good friend to have" and the girls nodded "okay". Jin's kindness played on your mind for a while and you texted him thanking him again. He told you it was totally fine and a few days later you decided to take him up on his offer and asked if he wanted to grab a coffee with you. It turned into dinner because Jin had to travel right afterwards and wouldn't be able to eat for a whole. You were fine with that though and took Jin to a place you really liked. You were right about how positive Jin was and he made you smile and see things with Baekhyun from a different perspective. Your life wasn't over and there were so many things to be grateful for. As if surmounted though who should walk past and see you but Baekhyun? He'd been wanting to contact you about what happened since that night but had no idea how. It was too awkward and the longer he left it the worse it seemed to become. He now thought it might be too late to contact you but then as if by magic there you were in your joint favourite restaurant...with Jin. You looked happy and kept smiling at the worldwide handsome who of course looked amazing. He had one of the most beautiful smiles in Kpop and Baekhyun felt a big burst of jealousy which surprised him. He'd always liked Jin so had no idea why he was feeling so resentful. Baekhyun didn't like those feelings and hurried away from the restaurant in case you saw him. Baekhyun got home and still, that angry jealous feeling persisted. He had no idea why until a cold sensation came over and he got a horrible idea. He'd just destroyed your friendship to show you the two of you would never be a couple when he had feelings for you? And now you were back with your ex?

Baekhyun put his head in his hands because things had just got a lot more complicated.

Y/N had nothing to be jealous of.

She always repeated this to herself ever since she started dating Sehun.

He was with her, all the time he had free was dedicated to her and even with his busy schedule, he made video calls or sent photos and videos of what he was doing, to try to make up for the fact that he wasn't by her side always.

And that was okay because she understood his job and would never put herself in the position of the possessive and jealous girlfriend, she would never make him cut ties with anyone who was spending more time with him than she was.

Because again, she understood.

But in the last few days when Sehun was filming a new series, moving his entire schedule forward before the new comeback and before he enlisted, the fact that Sejeong was his scene partner again was eating away at her reason from the inside.

Y/N liked her, there was nothing wrong with the girl, she was funny, talented, beautiful. And that was the problem.

Because the more Sehun spent time with his co-worker, the more insecure Y/N became, she compared herself all the time to Sejeong and she felt bad about it.

But she couldn't help it.

Y/N had gone to Sehun's house to take care of Vivi, she always did when he spent more time away from home, and since the pet had had a medical procedure on the paw, using that weird protection in the neck, she didn't think twice going there and taking care of Vivi.

"I will not take too long." he said, walking back into the room and Y/N raised an eyebrow as his scent swept across the room quickly before he did. "It's script reading but it's going to be quick."

"Is that all it will be?" she asked as he walked over to rub Vivi's belly who was lying on Y/N's lap.

Sehun looked at her confused.

"I didn't understand." he kissed Y/N's cheek quickly and she bit her tongue to keep from sounding rude.

She had no reason.

"Last time you said you wouldn't be long, you ended up going to a restaurant." she recalled, trying to lighten her tone.

"I told you I couldn't refuse." he remembered, standing up straight. "The show's producers were there, it would be rude of me."

Y/N looked away, annoyed and decided not to say anything.

But it didn't help much since Sehun saw in her face that there was something wrong.

“What is it?” he asked, putting his wallet in his pants pocket. Y/N shook her head. "Oh come on, love, tell me!"

"Will Sejeong be there?" she didn't want the venom in her tongue to sound in her voice but it was impossible and when she looked at Sehun, he was frowning, scrutinizing her to make sure she was serious.

"Oh no, you're not going to start that." he laughed in disbelief.

"I just want to know." she defended herself. "Because, everywhere you go, she's there. It's on a variety show, she's doing a photoshoot in the same building as you."

"Because literally our agendas are unintentionally bumping into each other." he said in a matter-of-fact tone and she huffed, rolling her eyes.

"Of course, and I'm Santa Claus." she replied ironically and he put his hands on his hips.

"Seriously, you want to fight over my co-worker?" he asked, sounding tired.

"I don't want to fight about her!" she took a deep breath, trying not to raise her voice. "But you spend more time with her than me, it makes me upset." she admitted.

"I don't spend more time with her because I want to but because it's part of my job."

Y/N crossed her arms, annoyed. Mainly because she knew he was right but at the same time she was furious because she couldn't control what she felt.

"Fine, Sehun, as you wish."

She heard him chuckle once more and glared at him, he was angry and hurt.

"You knew all this when you started dating me, if you can't control your jealousy then you shouldn't be with me." he spoke firmly, she stared at him a little surprised. "Don't try to be the controlling girlfriend with me because you know it won't work out."

Y/N felt her heart sink, he was serious. She didn't want him to misunderstand but the intonation in her voice sure made him understand what she didn't want.

"Sehu, I-" she tried to get up from the couch but he turned and stormed out of the house. "Sehun!" she called but the door had already been slammed, leaving only the trail of his perfume.

She felt the tears come and she collapsed on the couch anyway, feeling like an idiot.

Vivi laid it head in Y/N's lap as if to comfort her and she actually cried, stroking the pet's fur.

"I’m a fool." she told Vivi.

She was afraid that Sehun didn't want her anymore, and a good part of her was saying that he wouldn't be wrong.

Y/N stayed the whole time with Vivi, crying and wiping away her tears as if somehow making her forget the tightness in her heart.

She didn't even notice the time running.

When she heard the door open, she saw the time on the phone and when she realized that Sehun had arrived exactly at the time he said, she felt bad.

She figured he would come back much later on purpose, she knew the boyfriend and when he was mad all he did was be alone.

That's why she got up from the couch, with a headache from crying so much, and grabbed her bag without saying anything even though she felt Sehun's eyes on her.

With her head down, she prepared to leave but Sehun stopped her when she passed beside him, holding her lightly by the arm.

Y/N took a deep breath before looking up at him.

Neither of them said anything for a while, they just stared at each other trying to find the right words.

"I'm sorry." he said and she swallowed, not wanting to cry again.

"You're right, I don't have the right to control your life." she shrugged, looking away.

"No, I was wrong. It's unfair that I don't spend more time with you."

Y/N smiled sadly.

"It's your job, Sehun."

He took the opportunity to touch her chin, making her look at him again.

"And it's my obligation as a boyfriend to make time for you."

Sehun caressed Y/N's swollen face with a furrowed brow, he was analyzing her because he knew she had been crying.

And then he hugged her tightly, enveloping her whole body as if he would make her disappear in that embrace.

Y/N felt welcomed, loved, it was enough to sniff against his chest.

"No matter what they've scheduled for me, next month we're going on a trip." Sehun kissed the top of her head, and she smiled widely. "Just me and you."

Y/N liked this plan much better.

I'm so sorry I've been trying to figure out how what Ravi did caused Kai to go in early. I think I'm missing some context. Like I totally agree that what Ravi did was awful and gross and terrible, I just don't actually understand how that caused it. And I've been trying to figure it out but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. Would you mind explaining it please?

Solo albums, brand deals, magazines, solo concert, variety shows and all, he always gets better opportunities and supports despite other members are more popular and talented than him. KAISOO and Baekhyun are the only members who were busy all year, not the other members. I think you should check their schedule. Even your Ksoo Oppa wasn't free look how many shows he attended he got a pretty decent promotion for his latest album. And before that he was busy filming three big projects. Ksoo was so busy. It's hard a to swallow pill, but your Ksoo Oppar was one of the Privileged ones in SM, you can tell that because he was constantly busy he was overworked as well and this is the second main reason back in 2019 he wanted to leave. I've answered the question of where I see SM in 5 years here <- that's from about a month ago.

My view of Baekhyun and Taemin both jumping ship is that they were overdue. It was always a question of when not if. SM has a long, prolific history of bleeding talent and abusing their idols - that company is quite literally the worst offender among the Big3 just going by the number of lawsuits filed every 3 - 5 years from idols under their management. And this is aside the fact that SM is the only major company that compels their artists to sign 10-year contracts using a legal loophole, where the industry standard is 7 years. The reason SM's known practices aren't talked about more in fact, is because SM also has the largest amount of company stans in the wider k-pop fandom who strongly influence where scrutiny is placed.

And that reason is why even if this snowballs, it won't change anything dramatically for the company, because nobody is more committed to keeping illusion of SM's legacy/prestige alive more than fans of SM groups.

That said, based on debut dates, the group next up for contract negotiations is NCT. Because most of the founding members have promoted outside Korea (the legal loophole SM uses), this means they have 10-year contracts and so they'll only begin negotiations from the latter half of this year through 2026. As some of the members are due to enlist starting this year (Taeil, Jaehyun, Doyoung and Taeyong are the four oldest Korean members), it's assumed they are speedrunning negotiations ahead of that deadline, and it could be why we've seen solo and sub-unit projects for Taeil, Taeyong, Jaehyun and Doyoung in the last year. I'm highlighting those four in contrast to a member like Mark, who is easily NCT's most prominent member (alongside Taeyong) who still doesn't have a solo EP, and it's probably just a coincidence that he's Canadian and not up for military service. And so his negotiations can happen much later. Given the state of SM's dwindling idol portfolio and how they've been handling NCT so far, I expect almost all the members to re-sign (WayV is the wild card here), but I expect more bleeding from EXO and other legacy acts.

Anyway, I'm already rambling.

Baekhyun/Taemin have been associated with SM for a decade and that's not going to change even with them leaving the company, for two reasons:

They are still signed under SM for group activities.

SM stans won't relinquish that connection no matter how hard those idols attempt to rebrand their image. Like I've been saying, most fans of SM groups are actually company stans despite what they'll tell you.

So long as the make-up of k-pop fandoms remain dominated by SM stans, nothing is changing significantly for SM in this space in the next 5 years. Their new girl group will debut to much fan fare, Taemin and Baekhyun will continue being included in conversations about SM talent and influence, and SM company norms will continue as they have like every other time a high-profile talent has left their company - just fine.

The one caveat I didn't include in my prior post (linked above) but feel compelled to include now, is that the non-compete HYBE placed on Lee Sooman in 2023, expires in 2026. Given everything I've mentioned about how SM operates and the cult-like following LSM has both with his staff and k-pop stans generally, if he establishes a competing agency in the next 5 years, that could dramatically impact the life of SM Entertainment beyond any of the expected M&A scenarios I mentioned in point 3 of my linked post.

Overall, expect more of the same but there's a chance we get more fun times ahead. :)

so we knew freeze periods because of enlistment affected their contracts and this timeline looks like it was the most accurate at the moment (april 2022)

also SM confirmed during the cbx lawsuit that all the members minus one had signed an extension for contracts in december 2022. who knows how long that extension is but kyungsoo was the member who didn't sign which is why his original 10 year contract is ending exactly when it was supposed to

now, minseok jongdae and baekhyun's dates are up in the air since the cbx lawsuit definitely altered things

kyungsoo's original run ends in november just as SM confirmed today

chanyeol's isn't that far off but it probably had an extension because of overseas activities (which he fulfilled with exo sc)

junmyeon's probably had the longest extension but i doubt he renewed fully

i have no idea about sekai but it doesn't matter cause their contracts are put on pause until they get discharged so we'll find out until 2025 probably lol

so these would have been the dates for each member's contract expiration if they hadn't signed an extension in december of last year. i wonder if they regret that now but honestly the lawsuit probably made the biggest difference in how SM handles their artists contracts - changing working conditions for everyone in the company probably makes up for it

Okay here it goes… I rly need solo stans to shut. the. fuck. up. Like rly I do. As we know, Baek had his concert (which looked fantastic btw! I’m so proud of him!) and ofc, some of members came to show their support (im sure if Sehun and Jongin weren’t enlisted/busy they’d be there. Same goes for Yixing). However some miserable people wanted to use this ammunition or proof (whatever the fuck they want to call it) that the members don’t like each other, completely over analyzing their actions/words. Tbh, it’s mainly Kyungsoo and Baekhyun stans I see this from. Tho some other solo fandoms have been yapping about too. For some reason, they’ve gotten brave since Ksoo and CBX left sm (ofc I’m happy that they’re out of the shithole that’s sm). Like it’s 20-fucking-24! And yall still don’t believe that they like each other yet? Seriously? They’ve been together for nearly 15 years at this point. And they are FUCKING GROWN ASS ADULTS! If they didn’t like each other or want to be around each other, then they wouldn’t interact at all outside of work. Yet, how many times do we hear stories of ppl running into them while they’re on LITERAL “DATES” WITH EACH OTHER. Stop treating them like they’re in high school ffs! Every time any member is asked about exo during solo activities, they always say how they’re lucky to have them and that they’re family/brothers/lifelong friends.

If you don’t like the group or certain members, fine. That’s how you feel. I can’t change that. But you need to shut your damn mouths and show some respect! As the saying goes: if you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. Just remember, any of them members would burn you all alive to keep the others warm. [NEWS] Chen - 221116 Teen Vogue: “EXO’s Chen Opens Up About His Long-Awaited Homecoming With Album ‘Last Scene’”

"“A lot of things changed, and my thoughts changed during my recent hiatus,” he tells Teen Vogue.

Kim Jongdae, best known initially to fans as Chen, a member of the record-breaking group K-pop EXO, shared a promotional image for his third solo album of a mostly bare room replicated nine times. Shot through a sheer-curtained window, each photo is bathed in a different rich color – purple, blue, orange, green, and in the center, a muted gray. In each one he plants himself in a new position as if surveying the room from different angles, swathed in warm-hued light. He sits on a windowsill, stares through to the outside, and leans against a counter looking straight into the camera. The effect feels like an old-fashioned slide projector scanning through some kind of homecoming, illuminating the memories of a static environment with an ever-shifting perspective.

The idea of homecoming feels fitting for Chen. “A lot of things changed, and my thoughts changed during my recent hiatus,” he tells Teen Vogue over a video call from Seoul. The hiatus he refers to is the mandatory military service that is required for almost all men under the age of 28 in South Korea. After enlisting back in 2020, he was discharged in April of this year.

This new album is ironically called Last Scene, despite it being his re-entry into the world of making music, and its release acts as a sort of bookend to this break. His last solo album, Dear My Dear, and EXO album, Obsession, were both released in 2019. There’s a calm ease that radiates from Chen as he muses on approaching his comfortable creative bedfellow with a renewed frame of mind. “I was able to look back on who I am and reflect on what I am feeling,” he says. “There were a lot of questions that I asked myself throughout this process. It was a time for me to discover more about myself, and I spent time contemplating what I needed to be able to express my stories and ideas.”

The result is a compact but full six-track album, led by its titular song which is an orchestral, epic ballad about heartbreak. Fans will likely feel a soothing sense of familiarity with his genre of choice, as it’s one that has defined his solo output and led to him being dubbed the “Ballad King.”

Time feels omnipresent in conversation with Chen, in both the answers he gives and the space he lingers to take pause in his reflections. Each sentence feels completely intentional, like he doesn’t want to let a single important word go unsaid or clumsily expressed. In a field as fast-moving as K-pop, taking time is a luxury. It’s a concept that sits firmly at the center of the industry. Albums are numbered, birthdays marked with commemorative merch drops, group anniversaries dutifully celebrated like festivals, and metaphorical timers run down, for men at least, to the moment they choose to enlist. Chen’s military service overlapped with a landmark date in his career, EXO’s tenth anniversary.

Chen found fame in 2012 when EXO debuted as an all-singing, all-dancing, all-superpowered group (their concept literally involved each member taking on a particular power to be associated with). Like the lightning that a fresh-faced 19-year-old Chen adopted as a force, they sliced blindingly through the scene to become one of the most successful groups in history, amassing millions of fans worldwide and an enormously dedicated following that’s still anomalous in modern pop music. At the inception of that decade, Chen bowled over new fans with a juxtaposition of unassuming, boyish looks and a velvety, cavernous vocal prowess that lent itself not only to the 15 albums that he’s been a part of with EXO (to date) but to subunit EXO-CBX (alongside bandmates Baekhyun and Xiumin), countless K-Drama OSTs, and the now-three solo albums to his name. As anyone evolving through the ages of 20 to 30 can attest, it’s a period of time chronicled by immeasurable growth and some rather momentous personal life changes.

“With the spotlight comes the responsibility to keep working on myself, and to do my best in every given opportunity. I think these areas have been the biggest areas of change for me: a growing sense of responsibility, and to continuously strive to be a better version of myself, especially on stage,” Chen reflects, once again musing on the nearly packaged decennium of his fame. “When I look back at the past ten years, it still seems like a dream to me. Who else could have experienced what I’ve experienced, and go through what I’ve been through? There are times, even now, when it’s hard for me to grasp onto the fact that I have experienced these things, and that I am a person in the spotlight.”

He’s been fondly reminiscing a lot recently, maybe as a result of being able to celebrate milestones not usually afforded to his contemporaries. He thinks about the early days of EXO and the memories built with its members. The mention of his eight friends elicits a visible warmth that radiates through the screen. The value he places on them is inarguable, especially their support around the release of this long-awaited comeback. “I can’t fully express it in words, but each member gave me a lot of encouragement. They were a great source of strength for me,�� he says. “I can still remember how each member treated me like nothing was happening, as though everything was just the same. I get overwhelmed thinking about it.”

There’s clearly an unbreakable bond between the group, something forged in the unique whirlwind they found themselves in 2013 when their album, XOXO, and its lead single “Growl,” became the first K-pop album in over a decade to sell a million copies. It’s impossible to overstate the stratospheric success Chen experienced alongside the rest of EXO, and this concept-appropriate lightning-in-a-bottle moment has filled his thoughts of late. “A memory that suddenly comes into mind is, and I don’t know why, but it’s when we first released our Growl album. It’s the album that played the biggest role in making EXO who we are today, and I had a lot of fun.” He adds that sometimes videos of performances of the song, which are cringingly early 2010’s in their styling, will pop up on his YouTube feed but he’s too embarrassed to click. “I get very shocked watching myself.”

Chen gives the impression of a traveler making stops on a journey through his own past, which is what homecomings often feel like. Like we’re watching an old movie with characters we vaguely remember. The memories we cherish aren’t always the ones we thought we’d hold dear, and moments of insignificance sometimes metastasise into the building blocks of who we become later down the line. “I want to tell my younger self to learn to enjoy each moment a bit more,” Chen says. “I was very young back then, and compared to my age and experience, I received so much love and popularity. I wasn’t able to receive this love and appreciation as wholeheartedly as I hoped. There were times when I blamed myself for this. I look back and wonder now, only if I knew how to enjoy it a bit more. I might have been able to attempt and achieve more things. There’s a sense of regret that remains in me.” Revisiting familiar haunts also makes us confront the reality that our perception of spaces entirely changes depending on where we visit them in our lives. For Chen, the industry and fans may be the same, but he is different.

He’s channeled that new perspective into this album which, alongside the titular ballad, ventures into fresh solo territory like leaning into the R&B and pop that litters EXO’s discography. Those genres are sprinkled into the fourth track on the album, a relatable, and self-penned, ode to unrequited love called “I Don’t Even Mind” which he says took two hours to write.

“It was supposed to be a sketch, so I was a little suspicious when the team told me a couple of days later that these were the final lyrics that were chosen for the song. I said, ‘Are you sure? Is this right?,’” he says, laughing. The art of songwriting isn’t something that necessarily comes naturally to him, but it’s something he notes that allows him to express his interiority in new ways. “I think I get my inspiration from my day-to-day life. It might be a word that clings to me from a conversation with someone, or I also like to write songs based on my personal experiences. In the past, I used my imagination to write songs, but with ‘I Don’t Even Mind,’ I wanted to capture myself, just as I am.”

Another crucial distinction from previous releases was the power of learning to share the load. In interviews around his last album, he mentioned being so stressed he found it hard to sleep. “With the first and second solo albums, I had a lot of ambition and desire. I was quite stubborn about what I wanted to do, and I expressed this quite clearly during our meetings,” he says. “I decided to let go of my stubbornness and listen to the voices around me.” Looking outward and accepting help from others also helped him focus on his true motivations through the reeds. “You know I love music, but I don’t think it’s possible to do it by myself. I know it’s a very cliché answer, but my fans are my biggest motivation. The reason why I could do my music until now is because I have people who love me and support me, and because there is someone that is listening to my voice.” And as for being able to get some shut-eye? “I slept well.”

After any homecoming comes a period of bedding in. The newly familiar becomes comfortable again and focus shifts to where we point that solace next. Within the gilded trappings of stasis grows possibility and the chance for further success with the safety net of security. “As time goes on, I want to be more authentic and be open to express myself fully,” Chen says, hopeful for the opportunities yet to come. “I hope to be someone who is approachable and relatable to my fans, not just in my solo activities, but also in my group activities.”

Once again, talk turns back to EXO, a homecoming within his homecoming. “To be back on stage as a group, to sing together — I missed being together with the group the most,” he says. “It’s already been 10 years for [EXO] as a group, and I can’t wait to see who we will become in the years to come.” For Chen, the future hopefully looks a lot like what he’s known before, just saturated with new lights and colors. And that’s everything he could hope for."

Korean army hold different positions and services. Baekhyun, Suho and Kai served/are serving as social worker and that position holds 100 days more than an active duty soldier, which is the position the other exo members served so far (except Lay and Sehun).

Can they still work while in the army?

No.

What is discharge due COVID-19 protocol? Why was Xiumin and D.O. discharged early than their official discharge date?

Discharge due COVID-19 protocol is when the soldier leaves for his last vacation and doesn't need to come back to his base to avoid any spread of the corona virus. He's free of his military duties but it's still active in the military system. Which means he's not considered a regular citizen yet and can't go back to work or leave the country until his official discharge date. Both Xiumin and D.O. ended their service under that protocol.

omg welcome to shawolism! i'd be so happy to do a rundown on superm for you i have unfortunately been around for the entirety of this nonsense.

in mid 2019, sm announced that they'd debuting superm, what they marketed as "the avengers of kpop". the lineup was taemin, exo's kai and baekhyun, and nct's mark, taeyong, ten, and lucas. the main intent of the group was to break into the american market, because for all of sm's genius in the east asian market sm has mostly failed at marketing to a broad western audience. when the group was first announced, literally no one was happy about it. taemin had already released two mini albums with full promotions that year, and mark and taeyong are famously overworked. on the other end of the spectrum, exo had been ignored by the company so their fans were upset kai and baekhyun were being put in a new group instead of having a comeback with exo. nevertheless, superm debuted with their song jopping that october, which has become infamous because of how ridiculous the lyrics are. (when it was released everyone hated it because like. seriously? this is what the exo comeback has been pushed back for? but with the benefit of hindsight we all now know it was camp. stream jopping.)

superm only really promoted heavily from 2019-2020, mostly due to the pandemic and then baekhyun and taemin enlisting at the beginning of 2021. but in early 2022, information about nct's lucas's dating history came to light. the controversy is long and extensive, but in essence many women came forward (with truly just So Much proof) that he was manipulative and sexually inappropriate with past girlfriends, many of which he was dating at the same time and some of whom were nct fans. although sm hasn't made a statement about lucas since then, he hasn't promoted with nct at all in the past year and was left out of the the subunit wayv's (which he had been a fixed member of) recent comeback and promotions.

because of all that, plus the fact that taemin and baekhyun aren't even back from the military yet, everyone just assumed superm wouldn't have a comeback for a good long while, if at all. however sm loves to indulge in fuckery, and at the end of the company's end of year concert last week they teased that superm would be coming back in 2023. literally no one is happy about this. it seems like taemin and baekhyun will be releasing music with superm after they return from the military before they do with shinee or exo, which is deeply annoying, and the nct guys are still being seriously overworked (mark especially, that kid needs a vacation so bad).

the lineup change is all speculation for now, though i am sooo sure that lucas is Not going to be a part of the comeback, if there's one thing sm is going to do it's kick people out. in the teaser for superm, the video had the official colours of shinee/exo/nct come together to create the superm logo, with the addition of the colour red, which is the group tvxq's official colour. it's very likely a tvxq member will be joining superm, probably u-know because there were already rumours before the teaser that he'd be joining the group. all in all i think him joining will be nothing but a win because lucas was objectively not a good performer (he's called "dozen" on twitter because he dozen rap he dozen sing he dozen dance he dozen do anything lmao).

so yeah. that's superm. their music is pretty hit or miss, but i'd recommend their songs i can't stand the rain and tiger inside, those ones are bops. as a shawol and exo-l it's mostly just a general annoyance, but taemin does slay in every superm performance so at least there's a silver lining. hope this helped!
