Starmania:Edition Rouge (89)

So after a week of intensive original album/live recording listening, we have finally watched our first video of an older Starmania production!

And it was a wiiiiild ride (the 80s, eh!!) but also very interesting to see both how the different era is reflected in the production and how the story plays out.

Some semi-organised thoughts under the cut, as we used to say.

Cast / characters:

- That blonde gang guy is eyefucking everyone and I like it, real “polycule orgy pod” vibes for the Etoiles Noires *approve stamp*

- I really enjoy Wenta’s whole ~thing; the chair throwing towards Johnny & Cristal was great and she looks amazing; really selling the “upper class slumming it” thing.

-  Digging Stella’s voice! E says “she looks like a young Mariah Carey” lol

- I’m sorry but I am not suuuper convinced by Johnny /o\ I think I just have a hard time looking past the whole look.

Too manly for me lol

- I absolutely CRINGE at all the white people fake rapping going on (Roger Roger and some of the narration) -- pardon the reference but I keep expecting him to break into “Auteuil Neuilly Passy, tel est notre ghetto.” Also is Roger Roger single-handedly all of Télé Capitale? He certainly seems to be either on air or behind a camera lol

Plot / music / mise en scène:

Okay, so, I sadly don’t have a ton of good things to say about this D:

- I liked the Stella sitting on the star up in the sky bit

- What’s going on with the black on black on black, did people have much better eyes back in the 80s? *squints*

- I was wondering when they erased the references to “the white race” in Zero Janvier’s platform, and they’re gone by this version already. Also they changed Sadia’s “rédiger un message en Allemand” to “un message percutant” when they’re talking about claiming Cristal’s “kidnapping.” The geopolitical implications of each version are fascinating.

- The logic behind the changes in song order, content etc is so ODD. They made a few things sooo painfully didactic (let us spell out the relationship dynamics for you  r e a a a l   s  l  o   w   in case you were confused) but then they also completely say “fuck it” to coherence in terms of what’s going on inside the songs/how the songs relate to the narrative? Like, how the fuck could Ziggy be “the world’s first rock drummer??” (Although I guess that soundtrack is pretty drum-less, so maybe they were all wiped out in a pandemic and he has to repopulate lol) Why is MJ telling Ziggy “c’est un beau numéro” after “Enfant de la pollution” if it’s meant diagetically when he shows up with that gas mask on? And then making Johnny and Cristal have a big romantic slowed-down duet on “Monopolis” again felt pretty gratuitous

- Having Cristal’s message to the world be “Au secours, j’ai besoin d’amour” instead of “Je suis avec Johnny Rockfort” makes her look like a petulant child who ran away to be with her boyfriend and then makes him blow up the President to over-compensate.

- I knew Cristal’s death was changed a few times but the pacing of this one feels so anticlimactic after seeing the new version. 

- Overall I did not love the molasses 80s synth arrangements and the way they slowed a few things down and flattened the melody of all of MJ’s narrative bits. No wonder Maurane got depressed having to sing that night after night >.> Admittedly if I listened to the album it might grow on me, but the 70s version is so lively and delicate and upbeat in places (I missed “Starmania Starmania” so much!) and moving in others, and this felt a bit like... sad soup? >.>

All in all: it’s very interesting as a sociological (/archeological) object, will never be my fave version, and definitely giving context to another friend’s reaction when I said I was into Starmania now, which was “What, the 80s album?? That doesn’t seem... very....... you...” lol

I listen to a batch of songs obsessively on and off and these five have been in heavy rotation for a while. RTJ is one of my fave groups and I filter in and out of their stuff very often and that song I listed above has amazing imagery that I am so into. Fantasy because I watched Free Guy and it was a main part of the soundtrack and I got hooked. IDKHOW is one of my fave bands and MAD IQs is my fave track off their latest album. MIKA is my fave artist literally ever and Talk About You is the ultimate autistic hyperfixation song and is v much me esp about Freddy or any character I am currently obsessed with. And Get Some is a forever vibe, I literally just want to fuck, who needs deeper feelings than that?

1• Out of Time - The Weeknd

A pure bop, the rest of the album is fab but this is my fave. The Jim Carey cameo is great too.

2• 30/90 - Andrew Garfield & the cast of tick, tick…BOOM!

No surprise here, it’s legit become my third most listened song of all time and I’ve had this Spotify account since 2012 oops. Louder Than Words is a close second but the whole soundtrack is constantly stuck in my head.

3• Big Energy - Latto

It samples Mariah Carey’s Fantasy which is also sampled from another song but it’s so catchy and puts me in a good mood.

4• Eat Your Salad - Citi Zēni

Latvia’s Eurovision entry. I cannot believe they’re actually using it I had whiplash the first time it played. Another one that had a catchy beat so gets stuck in my head. Plus It gives me lonely island vibes with the lyrics and I adore them.
