Fun Fact and History Lesson!
The 'no beta we die like [character]' originated from this damn photo that went viral on Tumblr in 2016 and changed Ao3 tags and fanfic vernacular forever.
Tumblr media
Meaning: it's a tag used on fics that were not beta read (the author didn't get someone to read it for them before posting). Betas read fics to check for spelling, grammar, consistently, etc and often edit it.
*
Similarly, 'Dead dove' or 'dead dove do not eat' is from this scene in Arrested Development.
Tumblr media
Meaning: if there's a warning of something really dark/bad, don't open/read it and expect something different. Or: 'mind the tags this is dark, don't read if you don't like it'.

yes, we shouldn't ignore the terrible events going on right now (Palestine, Sudan, etc), but I think we need some reminders because some of the posts i've been reading have been giving off *extremely* guilt-trippy vibes: Not posting about current events or bad things =/= not caring. Not reblogging =/= not caring. Adding "don't scroll past this" or "reblog this or block me" to posts is guilt-trippy as hell. And lastly, online activism is not the only form of activism.

sometimes i'll think about how, at the start of episode four, pete offers to help porsche guess who he might have kissed at the pier the night before, and i imagine a crackfic where porsche goes on a quest to find out who it was by kissing his colleagues one by one - starting with pete of course that man was ready to sacrifice himself for the cause when porsche had questions about casual hookups later in the episode, offering himself up without hesitation
he visits them one by one; pol is confused... but intrigued, it's like one of tankhun's series! arm already knows it wasn't him but insists they check it anyway... just to be sure, right? you never know. ken says he'll break his face if he tries anything (very suspicious, porsche makes sure to highlight his name). big doesn't know whether to be angry or confused, he wasn't even there??? no he and ken didn't sneak in halfway through because of a secret crush, this isn't one of tankhun's series! tankhun asks what they're doing and if he can join but porsche isn't about to open that can of worms.
maybe at some point kinn catches on and realizes porsche doesn't remember but is rating the others based on if they kiss better or worse than the ~mystery person~, which is giving him an ego boost up until porsche declares that one of his friends is actually a better kisser and therefore can't possibly have been involved (said friend is very confused about why khun kinn is giving him death glares for the rest of the week)
you can even throw in some chan or vegas or anyone else if you want to, just go crazy with it, i think that'd be really funny especially if porsche just casually blasts vegas after they make out for a solid minute saying "no you're good but the other guy was just less desperate you feel me, sorry bro".

WHAT IS THIS SAGAU THING I KEEP SEEING IT????
*claps hands* i will try to explain as best as i can with what i know!!
SAGAU is an acronym for Self-Aware Genshin AU. in its most basic form, it's an alternate universe where the genshin characters are aware of the player's existence in some capacity, often extending to them being/becoming aware of their existence as video game characters
HOWEVER as far as i know (might be wrong) the most popular iteration of the SAGAU is the cult/creator version. i'm not sure what the name of it actually is, but the basis is that in Teyvat, the player is revered as the creator of the entire world (basically the one true god) and more often than not it involves the player being somehow transported into genshin and being completely baffled when they see people worship them
there's a LOT of different versions of this AU, my personal favorite is the "imposter" route of the creator one, aka where everyone thinks the player is a fraud and tries to kill them, and i definitely don't know everything about it but i hope this helps!!

I’ve seen quite a few people discuss TSATS specifically in the manner that it’s supposed to be a middle-grade book, and I’d like to throw my two cents into the hat.
Particularly, I don’t think it’s reasonable to excuse the failings of TSATS just because it’s supposed a middle-grade book. The failings of the book are primarily structural, both narratively and just in basic writing structure, neither of which are excusable of a middle-grade novel - Especially given this is Mark Oshiro’s first major foray into middle-grade, as they typically write YA. It also seems that TSATS’ rating is actually upper middle-grade, so there’s even less excuse for the quality of the book. The problem isn’t that the book is bad to a non-middle-grade reader, or even bad as a middle-grade book, the problem is that the book is bad in general. So much of the book’s quality and execution feels just so poor in ways that you would typically expect to get caught very early on by the editorial team. Being middle-grade doesn’t excuse it being structurally bad for any reading level. It feels like the editorial team didn’t care about the quality of the book at all. There’s an unreasonable amount of places where the sentence and paragraph structures are poor, the writing is unclear, there’s basic continuity errors within the same sentence, the pacing is bad, and an overall lack of grammatical consistency (you can actually tell which portions of the book are written by Rick Riordan versus Mark Oshiro based purely on the use of s’ or s’s - if you see something like “Hades’s palace“ then it’s Riordan, and if it’s something like “Hades’ palace” then it’s Oshiro - this type of inconsistency should have been made consistent by the editing team).
The book also completely fumbles its attempts at handling its intended themes with any kind of grace or respect to the reader. TSATS being middle-grade (particularly upper middle-grade) doesn’t mean it can’t feature heavy themes, or that it has to dumb them down for a younger audience! I speak as someone who is extremely familiar with the Animorphs series - which is actually lower middle-grade. It’s basically like the poster-child for presenting complex themes and ideas appropriately in a middle-grade series. The way middle-grade is formatted is it’s about the writing structure (how simplified vs complex it is and so how easy is it for a middle-grade reader to understand) and how the concepts are presented, not about the actual concepts themselves. Animorphs is a really good example of this in that most of the books are less than 300 pages and the language is very simple. However, it doesn’t shy away from strong topics or dumb concepts down for the audience. It balances heavy topics with jokes in stride (see: The entire book about psychochemical warfare and the ethics of that, but the psychochemical warfare in question is dumping instant maple and ginger oatmeal on space slugs). And a lot of Animorphs books are actually ghostwritten! I would also argue the Warrior Cats books are another good example, particularly the novellas. They’re a similar length to TSATS, again written by a team of authors, are middle-grade rated, and don’t shy away from some pretty graphic stuff. They’re not the best books in the world, I mean, they’re rapidly churned out cat books for middle-schoolers. And they also tend to be full of errors. But at the very least most of the errors in the Warrior cat novellas aren’t basic structural stuff that you’d expect an editor to comb out within the first couple of passes or major basic details for a very prominent character or worldbuilding. Something equivalent to the types of errors in TSATS would be like a warrior cats novella about Brightheart not remembering how she got her scars or who Swiftpaw was or what Shadowclan is called, and every three chapters you read the jankiest sentence you’ve ever seen.
There are absolutely ways for the types of themes they were trying to handle in TSATS to be presented to a middle-grade audience appropriately, effectively, and with respect. TSATS was not even close to that. Again, I point to Animorphs! You wanna talk about writing PTSD for a middle-grade audience? Animorphs is your series. Animorphs gets into some heavy shit. But the way it’s presented is always appropriate for a middle-grade audience. Middle schoolers can handle more than people give them credit for (have you ever read middle-schoolers roleplaying warrior cats? I have. they do not hold back.) - they’re at the exact age where that type of stuff is not only interesting to them and they want to read about it, but that it’s important for them to begin to be introduced to those types of concepts in a way that’s appropriate for their age so that they’re prepared for when they encounter those topics or themes when they’re older.
The first Percy Jackson series actually does this really well! Percy has PTSD in the first book from Gabe! This is very clearly acknowledged and referenced throughout the first series (and even into Son of Neptune!) - and it’s specifically from Gabe, not being a demigod. We see characters grapple with grief and witnessing death and being in shock from that (the “dam” scene post-Bianca’s death, and the explicit acknowledgement that all the characters are so emotionally exhausted and harrowed from witnessing Bianca sacrifice herself for them that they get all giggly over stupid “dam” jokes). TSATS refuses to allow any emotional pay-off from the scenes. The Gorgyra interludes are the only thing keeping the pacing from being absolutely abhorred for half the book. There’s tons of narrative set-up that goes nowhere. There’s sentences that are so disjointed you wonder how they got written in the first place. This book shouldn’t have gotten past the editors, honestly.

If a tailed spacer is injured, would using an X-ray machine to check for broken bones work, or would they be completely opaque due to the selenomelanin?
X-ray imaging in RttS is better than ours because their radiography technology has greater scintillator efficiency-- basically they need less x-rays for an accurate image. But you still need a higher frequency and intensity of ionizing radiation to do radiography of tailed spacers, who can appear nearly opaque under certain conditions.

you know what gets me the most about the code dropping the eggs’ signature items as a way of tormenting and taunting the members? is that it seems to be dropping them primarly to the eggs’ parents/family
like it dropped leo’s head(s) directly to foolish (twice to make sure there was no uncertainty), it dropped the first poppy/amapola directly to phil and waited for him to pick it up before throwing another one to bad, and i can’t check the vod but the stack of apples it dropped at ninho was when aypierre was there with everyone protecting the eggs (and ninho also has been crucial for pomme’s safety so i guess that counts for it too)
it’s giving these threats directly to the egg’s parents/family, instead of just a general taunt like the apple in the water. like ’hey, once the election is over (or whatever time to code starts attacking again), your child will die’

keep hearing the same shit “you’re ignoring history” “Jews are native to Israel” we sure are. but so were the Palestinians. They are also a Semitic people. no native people should be the sole controller of a piece of land that others are also native to. they taught you to share in kindergarten didn’t they. “Palestine didn’t exist back then that name was given to it by the philistines” a piece of land can be called different things over history. we don’t call Iran Persia or Istanbul Constantinople anymore do we. Israel, Palestine, whatever. the point is that we all lived there and maybe we shouldn’t kill our neighbors and take their houses because we think we’re the only ones who deserve them

What is the "core 5" that has been disputed?
There's way better posts about this out there but it's basically from a super old interview (I think?) where GRRM that said the five key characters in the series are Arya, Jon, Bran, Dany, and Tyrion.
Fans who subscribe to this use it as irrefutable proof that Sansa is irrelevant and unimportant to the story even though GRRM said things to counteract this many times. And even if those are the "key 5" that does not diminish potential importance of other characters, not just Sansa! (Catelyn & Ned, Jaime & Cersei, the Greyjoy and Martell plots, even characters who don't get POV chapters!) The books have changed so much since he said that and he's literally been writing them for like 30 years now???
Sansa's arc specifically changed significantly from original outlines where she was just meant to cause tension in the Stark family. People who hold this key 5 as gospel also often believe in a Targ restoration and even the old outline with the Jon/Arya/Tyrion love triangle...
I digress.
But also if we're looking just at chapter counts across the series...Tyrion has 49, Jon has 42, Arya has 34, Dany has 31, and Sansa and Cat are tied for fifth with 25. Bran only comes in 6th with 21.
I don't think the chapter counts are indicative of anything, but I do think the fact that GRRM likes writing Tyrion is quite obvious lmao.
All of that being said, I don't put much stock in what other people interpret to be true about characters or plot, I trust my own eyes and interpretations of things, and that tells me that the Starks (all of them) are the heart of the story and always will be. The Lannisters and the Targaryens (and the dead) are key enemies for their family and Tyrion and Daenerys are the figureheads for those conflicts, hence their chapter counts. GRRM likes a long character arc, and both Tyrion and Daenerys are on clear downward descents imo, so if people want them to be in the "key 5" that's fine, because they're there for different reasons than they assume.
To finish off, a lot of these theories anti Sansa and anti Jonsas cling to are strawman arguments that fall apart under the closest bit of inspection. I don't claim to be some all knowing GRRM prophet haha, but from my POV all these things are pretty clear.
Thanks anon :)
