The Austrian Navy 1786-1869

The Austrian Navy was founded in 1786, although there had already been various naval units before that, for example on the Adriatic coast or the Danube. The most important access to the sea was in Trieste in Italy and so it was from there that mostly Italian sailors sailed under the Austrian flag, albeit initially only with two cutters and 20 guns. This ended in 1797 with the Peace of Campo Formio and the takeover of Venice, Istria and Dalmatia which included the Venetian Navy and gave access to a further 37 ships. After the defeat at Wagram and the founding of the Kingdom of Italy, Austria lost its coastline in 1809. It was restored by 1815 after the Congress of Vienna. These naval forces were called the Austro-Venetian Navy and existed until 1848, during which time the navy was expanded. A naval cadet school was established and more ships and equipment were acquired. Among them were two frigates that sailed from Trieste to Brazil in the 1820s, making them the first Austrian ships to cross the Atlantic.

The uniforms were blue like most of the uniforms of the other navies. They wore dark blue coats, white breeches and black felt hats. Eventually the collars and cuffs became light blue, which was retained until 1865. As in other navies, sailors did not wear uniforms until the middle of the 19th century, but the usual dress of a sailor. From 1820 officers wore the bicorne and from 1835 blue trousers with gold stripes were worn. The double-breasted tunic was introduced for officers around 1856, and distinctions were allowed between the different officer groups. While naval officers continued to wear blue coats, civilian officers wore white coats with silver lace. (x)

In 1829, Austrian warships bombarded Moroccan ports on the Atlantic coast, which were suspected of piracy. Archduke Frederick and the crews of Austrian warships had their first "real" military experience alongside British warships off the Syrian coast in 1840, where as part of the Quadruple Alliance they bombarded port cities (e.g. Saida, Acre, Beirut) and helped the Ottomans push back the Egyptian Viceroy.

In 1848, the European revolutions began, in the suppression of which Austria played a decisive role. For the navy, the greatest loss was Venice, when the military and naval forces were driven out of the city and Admiral Martini was captured. After Radetzky's victory over the Sardinians at Custozza in 1848, the situation was restored and the bombardment of Venice led to the surrender of the city in 1849.

The SMS Novara was an Austrian frigate that gained international fame due to her circumnavigation of the globe (1857-1859). The ship was rebuilt twice in the course of her service, with the second conversion, carried out from 1860 to 1862, being very extensive. The ship took part in the naval battle of Lissa in 1866 - after a serious second conversion to a steamer- and was broken up in 1898 after various uses. (x)

From 1850 onwards, the Austrian navy grew considerably. It was now the k.k. Kriegsmarine, a true Austrian navy. In addition, the Italian element of the navy was gradually replaced by other nationalities of the Empire, including Croats, Dalmatians and Hungarians. At this time the navy consisted of 4 frigates of 32-42 guns, 6 corvettes of 20 guns, 7 brigs of 16 guns, 10 miscellaneous sailing vessels and 4 steamships. In 1854, command of the Austrian Navy fell to Emperor Franz-Joseph's younger brother, Archduke Ferdinand Max.

The loss of most of the Italian possessions in the Second Italian War of Independence of 1859 did nothing to diminish the progress of the navy. A small arms race ensued with the newly independent Italy, which acquired more ships, some of which were even built on Austrian soil in Pola.

From 1856 onwards, Austrian sailors wore hats with oilskin brims (similar to those worn by the British Royal Navy), on which the name of the ship was written in gold letters on a black band. Over the jacket, dark blue round jackets with brass buttons and light blue collar patches were worn, fringed in white. When on sea, sailors wore blue blouses with light blue collar patches. Warrant officers and petty officers wore round peaked caps similar to officers, the former with gold bands, the latter with black. (x)

The importance of the warship fleet for Austria was demonstrated in 1864 by Wilhelm von Tegetthoff's naval victories at Helgoland in the German-Danish War. During his time as supreme admiral of the navy, urgently needed reforms began, such as the introduction of a uniform service language to end communication problems among Croatian, Italian and Austrian sailors on the high seas, and the sustained modernisation of the fleet. Until then, the Italian navy was still clearly superior to the Austrian navy. The decisive turning point, however, was the naval battle of Lissa, in which Austria defeated the numerically superior Italians in 1866. These first great successes of the Austrian navy, also guaranteed the financial means needed to modernise the fleet. Wood as a construction material was increasingly replaced by iron, and the naval battle of Lissa remained the last battle to be decided by the use of ram cruisers.

From this point on, Austria's navy was a naval force to be taken seriously in the Adriatic. In addition to military tasks, the navy also had an economic and scientific significance, which manifested itself in numerous research voyages by Austrian warships. These voyages to all continents served not least to train the crew, whereby "flying the flag" on the world's oceans for prestige purposes was a desirable side effect. In 1869, the Austrian Navy became the Imperial and Royal Navy of Austria-Hungary,

With the defeat of the Central Powers in the First World War and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1918, the fate of the Kriegsmarine was also sealed. The ships of the Mediterranean fleet and parts of the Danube flotilla passed into the possession of the victorious powers. The parts of the fleet not claimed by the victorious powers were handed over to the new South Slavic National Council at the end of the war. The Republic of Austria was left with only a few patrol boats on the Danube. The last two patrol boats were decommissioned in autumn 2006.

@jongin-be-my-jagi tagged me for this a while ago, but I took my sweet time to answer. Here is my secret intel if you want to know me a little bit more!! Check hers as well, she’s an amazing writer and friend. 1. What takes up too much of your time? Tumblr, my stupid procrastination prone brain and my thesis.

2. What makes your day better? Friends and loved ones, music and these absolute dorks (Channie especially)

3. What’s the best thing that happened to you today? I hopped on the mat today in the early hours of the morning, rain on my window and the neighbours cat peeking at me from his window across the street.

4. What fictional place would you like to go to? Wonderland, bacause it’s “curiouser and curiouser!”

5. Are you good at giving advice? I think so. Not so good at following my own advice though. I do always consider where the other is standing and if I don’t know how to proceed then I’ll just be honest and say I can’t help. But i’ll always listen with my heart.

6. Do you have any mental illnesses? Not diagnosed. I do think i might be going through something now.

7. Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis? No, but i have a recurring nightmare: the world is made of black and white paper thin layers. I am a paper thin person walking along a street surrounded by paper thin buildings. I walk for a long time, looking up at the white sky. Until the street ends, there is no more building and i fall into the abyss of a blank page. I have had this dream since the age of 8 or 9 years old. Fear of not being good enough, you say?! Ding, ding, ding!! We got a winner in the back! 8. What musician inspired you the most? I get inspired by music all the time!! One of my all time favourite songs is Spanish Sahara by Foals. Its sublime!

11. What do others notice about you? I am very kind and warm hearted, so I think that’s what people first notice when meeting me. Although I maintain good eye contact, I am also timid and will be quieter if there are very energetic people in the group. When alone, I usually take the first step and try to meet people, but only if i really must. 12. What’s an annoying habit you have? It’s really hard for me to ask for help. I also like to tell detailed descriptions of everything... Couldn’t you tell? 13. Do you still talk to your first love? I’ll text him on his birthday and he does the same to me. We met when we were 10 years old and that childhood friendship remains. But regarding my one and truly deep relationship, no we do not talk, unless we randomly meet.

14. How many exes do you have? I have three exes. The first love who was just an idealized crush on my childhood friend: we dated for 2 weeks during summer break xD Then my first real boyfriend, we met in my first year at university, dated for quite some time, he really loved me and made me love myself a little more. Finally the one i loved too much. I mended his wounds and made him love himself as much as I did. I always say all the love we feel makes our hearts grow bigger. I do not regret loving any of them, I am me now due to them and I would not change it if I could. 15. How many songs are in your playlist? I have way too many playlists for each and every mood... But my favourite songs list on spotify has about 1500 songs! uwu! 16. What instruments can you play? Triangles and flute?! I had mandatory music classes in school... so in reality I can’t really play a instrument...

17. Who do you have the most pictures of? Probably my cat, Sushi. With a second close of my doodles and sketches.

18. Where would you like to go before you die? EVERY WHERE!!! But I really want to go to Japan and Scotland and Iceland and South Korea and New Zealand and i’ll shut up. 19. What’s your zodiac? Capricorn. 20. Do you relate to it? Sort of.

21. What is happiness to you? You know when it’s really cold outside in the winter and you manage to find a sheltered place where no wind can hit you and you still get to feel the warm rays of the winter suns on your skin? You hear the birds outside and you are contempt in that moment, at peace. That is happiness to me. 22. Are you going through anything right now? Yes, I am a bit lost. Trying to finish my thesis and trying to find what I want to do after. It’s liberating but also pretty scary. 23. What’s the worst decision you ever made? It’s a series of small decisions really. It started with going for a phd with the same people i worked in my msc. Should have gone to a different place. Then deciding to come home after a traumatic loss in the family. Should have kept my life going but I stalled it then. (I don’t regret helping my loved ones though).

24. What’s your favourite store? Probably Wishtrend for beauty stuff. Other than that I don’t have any favourite brands/stores. 25. (HALFWAY!) What’s your opinion on abortion? I think everyone is free to decide what they want or need to do. I couldn’t possible judge. If I would it? Probably not.

27. Do you have a favourite album? I don’t think so, I have favourite tunes for different moods and moments in my life. But if threatened with my life, I’d maybe say Total Life Forever from Foals.

28. What do you want for your birthday? It’s such a long time until my birthday comes! But maybe a real EXO ot9 reunion as a goodbye to Minseok?

29. What is most people’s first impression of you? Friendly and easy to open up to, i think.

30. What age do you seem according to most people? In real life, people usually think I am way younger than I am. 31. Where do you keep your phone when you’re sleeping? In the crook of my bed, between the mattress and the bed frame.

32. What word do you say the most? No idea really! 33. What’s the oldest age you’d date? 40s? I don’t think too much about age actually.

34. What’s the youngest age you’d date? 20s? Again not very important to me. Love is love, whomever, whenever and wherever <3

35. What job / career do most people say would suit you? I don’t know! People always say i don’t totally fit in anything... so there’s that. If you have an idea please let me know! 36. What’s your favourite music genre? Go back to question 8. I listen to everything! :D 37. If you could live in any country in the world where would it be? I’d like to live around the world, every few months a different place and get to know different cultures.

38. What is your current favourite song? I’ve been obsessed with RM’s intro/teaser song, Map of the Soul: Persona. (I’m not even a bts fan, but this music and lyrics just touched me a lot.)

39. How long have you had this blog for? I think for about 6 years? It’s my personal space, where I dump all my obsessions.

40. What are you excited for? I’m visiting some friends in Granada in a couple of weeks. Yay, tapas!

41. Are you a better talker or listener? Normally I am a better listener. But there are a few people to whom i open like a book. Either words flow right out of me without even thinking or they see throw me. Those truly are my people.

42. What is the last productive thing you did? Prepped meals and cleaned the kitchen. Open the folder and file of my thesis. Read the latest chapter I wrote. 43. What do you want for Christmas? Well, just like for my birthday, there is still such a long time to it! But let’s say i want to have already finish this part of my life and want to find my next adventure.

44. What class do you get the best grades in? No more exams! Ehehe! But I used to have good grades at everything. Physical Education was my lowest mark i think.

45. On a scale of 1-10 how do you feel right now? Right now, a 4? I have a headache.

46. What can you see yourself doing in 10 years? Smiling? :D I want to be happy in my own skin. To feel contempt in my life, doing something that gives me a sense of purpose and having time to share and enjoy with my friends and family. 47. When did you get your first heartbreak? Oh my kintsugi heart has been broken quiet a lot. By friends and lovers and even by myself. I keep patching it up with gold dreams though. 48. At what age do you wanna be married? I will only want to be married if i find the one. So until then I guess.

49. What career did you want to have as a child? I wanted to be an astronaut and a ballerina. Preferably both!

50. What do you crave right now? Just sitting somewhere and listening to Yeol play the guitar.

Ferdinand’s Phantom

He stood on the deck, looking out at the gulf islands scattered with cedar trees and tiny, colourful cottages, which seemed diminutive at this distance. They looked like doll houses. Ferdinand was lucky to have made his four o’clock ferry reservation, although now he began to have second thoughts about leaving his car – a jaguar E-type – unattended on the vehicle deck. But this was Canada. Suddenly a pod of around thirty killer whales burst into view. Ferdinand froze in place, staring at the orcas open-mouthed, and forgot all about his jaguar.

Finally, Ferdinand arrived. It was a resplendent chateau, surrounded by cedar trees and decorated with creeping emerald vines, which resembled a network of veins. In the garden roses grew: blood red, white, silver and gold. He parked outside, marched to the door, and knocked firmly three times. It was answered by a young girl of about thirteen, who turned scarlet as soon as he spoke to her and muttered something inaudible before scurrying away like a frightened animal. Not long afterwards, Alexa Ashworth descended the spiral staircase, carrying herself erect and flashing a set of blinding white teeth that matched her white-blonde hair. ‘Oh, Ferdie!’ They kissed each other on each cheek, the way people do in France. ‘How are you, Ferdinand? How was that awful ferry?’

‘Fine,’ he replied, ‘Better than flying.’ Alexa glanced past him at the forest-green jag outside. Pursing her lips and raising her eyebrows, she nodded approvingly. She looked back at Ferdinand and smiled, gesturing to an armchair. Taking a seat opposite, she rang a small silver bell on a tray. A young girl in a black and white maid’s costume, with mouse brown hair, walked swiftly into the room.

‘Mary, two vodka martinis, please.’ Ferdinand started to lift his right hand, but hesitantly placed it back on his lap, while Mary flitted off. ‘Are you excited for the party tonight? I’m afraid you’ve arrived rather early. No one will be here until at least seven o’clock.’ Ferdinand gazed out the window at the chinks of yellow light sneaking through red-and-gold maple leaves; it was still only October, and Vancouver Island was far enough south that it was light at this hour. He said he might take a walk, and left his drink with the servant girl, who was all too pleased for the chance to dispose of the untouched cocktail. Alexa’s makeup artist was due to arrive any minute, so she pranced upstairs, while Ferdinand went to inspect the grounds. The estate covered twenty hectares, and the gardens required constant upkeep. Ferdinand caught sight of himself reflected in the still waters of a lily pond. He’d been much younger when he first met Mrs Ashworth. At forty-five, his curly brown hair began to sprout a few greys and worry-lines creased his forehead. Though he was still handsome; his eyes were the colour of the lily pads and his cheek bones were prominent on his lightly tanned, perfectly symmetrical visage. He thought he’d better go inside and get ready for the party, which he was suddenly in the mood for.

The household staff busied themselves decorating the mansion, while Ferdinand went to the spare room to dress up as Dracula. He hoped it was original enough. Who was he kidding? His costume screamed indifference. It didn’t matter what people thought, though. It was entirely ridiculous for a serious psychiatrist to disguise himself as a demon and participate in Hallowe’en, which was really about children and candy.

Donning fake fangs, fake blood and a midnight cape, the doctor opened the golden door knob and strode with feigned confidence into the party. Alexa was wearing a floor-length porcelain-white gown and a crown of flowers freshly picked from the garden on her head. She held a bouquet of Parma Violet peonies in between her two full breasts, which were at least fifty percent on show. She was nearly the image of a blushing bride, were it not for the trail of red running from her left breast to the train of her dress and her rather horrifying makeup. And she actually paid for that. ‘Hello, Dracula.’

‘What are you supposed to be?’ Ferdinand enquired.

‘A zombie bride, obviously.’ She folded her arms across her chest. ‘Oh, look. The entertainment has arrived.’ Ferdinand spun around to regard the latest arrival. ‘Lucy, hi.’

‘Hey,’ Lucy grimaced. She wore a pointy purple hat, a long violet gown with belled sleeves, and pointy black shoes. You couldn’t tell if she were bald, because she was wearing the hat. ‘You look…nice.’

‘Oh, yeah? You do know this is a Hallowe’en party, right?’ When no one laughed, she added: ‘Lucy came as herself!’

‘Actually, I came as you.’ The whole room erupted into laughter and the bride’s face waxed red as magma.

Pockets of partygoers prattled animatedly, as Ferdinand poured himself a red plastic cup full of punch. He poured one for Lucy, smiling at her.

‘Cheers,’ she said, ‘To a fabulous fête.’

‘Are you Métis?’ Lucy rolled her eyes and laughed. He shouldn’t have asked that.

‘Yeah.’

‘Hi, hi.’ Alexa waved, waltzing over. ‘Is everybody having a good time? Mm… punch.’ Ferdinand wondered how much she’d had.

‘I think I’ll go out for some fresh air,’ Ferdinand suggested, swaying slightly as he stumbled towards the door. Alexa darted in front of him, lifting the train of her dress.

‘Why don’t I join you, Mr Vampire?’ Ferdinand shrugged by way of reply and removed his fangs. The doorway was barricaded by Harry Potter, Darth Vader and a ghost. Alexa and Ferdinand eventually got past them. Ferdinand lit a cigarette, and Alexa snatched one, holding it in her mouth for him to light. He asked how and, for that matter, where Richard was. The normally loquacious Mrs Ashworth replied tersely that her husband was fine, that he would be late as usual.

‘Oh, it is so cold.’ Alexa huddled herself up against Ferdinand, looking up into his green eyes. He put his arm around her shoulder and led her back inside, where Darth Vader started playing Shostakovich on the violin. ‘Dance with me, Ferdie.’ He placed his arm tentatively on her waist, as he led her around the dance floor. It was a sort of Viennese Waltz. If an octopus tried to do a Viennese Waltz. Spinning around in that ballroom, Ferdinand started to feel dizzier than he was already, and Alexa looked different somehow. Almost like it wasn’t Alexa at all. She flung her arms around his neck and pressed her lips against his, and he held her head in his hands, kissing her back furiously. Her lips were so soft, like those of a twenty-one-year-old. For a moment, nothing happened. The fiddler kept fiddling, the drinkers kept drinking, the dancers kept dancing. Suddenly, Ferdinand was brought back to the present, to a sober realisation of what he had done. He opened his eyes, and in his peripheral vision he saw a sobbing bride scrambling up the staircase. In front of him stood a laughing witch, albeit a rather pretty one.

‘Have we met before?’ he asked.

‘Lucy Wilson-Knight,’ she replied, ‘And you’re the famous Dr Ferdinand Faber.’

‘Oh goodness, Lucy. Forgive me, I’m afraid I’m rather drunk.’

‘Yeah, we did tequila shots earlier.’ Did he? ‘You probably won’t remember this in the morning.’ But Alexa probably would.

Before long, the sun started to rise. Ferdinand took off his cape and walked down the garden steps to the beach. He looked out at the water, kicked his shoes off, and threw himself into the sea. Yesterday, he’d seen killer whales in that water. Today, he didn’t care. At least here there were no witches or werewolves, no vampires or undead brides. Yesterday, he faced his demons. No, he didn’t believe in that nonsense: his subconscious desires. For a minute he had really wanted to kiss Mrs Ashworth, but today he was very glad he hadn’t.

what kind of music do you like? :o in terms of artists or even genres

It’s a hard question, I don’t have a well-defined music tasteand my preferences have evolved quite wildly. I’m trying to scroll through mySpotify to get a grasp on my own taste please bear with me. (Also keep in mindI like the music but I know nothing about any of these bands orz)

A few years back I used to listen to nothing but bands like TheKooks, Two Door Cinema Club, STRFKR, Modest Mouse, Moriarty, Alt-J, Arctic Monkeys, Caravan Palace, Black Honey, Kingsof Leon, Pheonix, The Fratellis, Franz Ferdinand… I still love them all tbh, buttheir music definitely reminds me of school lmao

Other bands I love are C2C, Miike Snow, Glass Animals, The XX, MGMT, M83, OKGo, Tame Impala, Jain… I’ve also always had strong feelings about Daft Punk,Gorillaz and Woodkid (these three in particular are… my ride or die music tastes.I love them so much).

In another genre, Sleeping At Last is my weakness, alongwith Agnes Obel, Amber Run, Hozier, Lo-Fang… They just feel a certain way youknow. Classics I also love include Fleetwood Mac, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Sia,Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, Pink Martini, Indochine (+ a list of French artists as long as myarm).

Also piano? Classical music in general, most specificallythe romantic era as well as some contemporary composers (going from Liszt,Debussy and Satie to RV Williams, Jean-Michel Blais, Henri Bardot and AngusMcRae, with a million others in between).

There are things that just pop up on the regular in my musical history andI like them as well but I can’t say I know them well: Lorn, HOME, Shawn Wasabi,Papooz, Mystery Skulls, Haux… I listen to the Floral Shoppe album to focus(unironically) and my go-to playlist when I do things like cooking or ironing is a mix of 80’s/90’s groovyoldies with Aretha Franklin, the Bee Gees, Earth Wind & Fire and Prince.

Lately I’ve been listening to Mitski, Sufjan Stevens andhalf.alive.

So yeah, I’m all over the place (though there are a lot ofgenres I have no affinity with)
