I was just reminiscing on how hard this fandom was shilling for a complex Ganondorf for the wilds era, and this wasn't even confined to niche parts of the fandom. Every time there was a hint that Ganondorf might be involved in some way, the fandom went wild with speculation. It's like people these days, when defending TotK's poor handling of Ganondorf's writing, forget that a complex Ganondorf, or at least a Ganondorf that had a bit more character depth than a puddle on sidewalk, was something *everyone* wanted. Most people were not content with an "evil for the sake of being evil" Ganondorf.
When the first trailer and images of BotW dropped, a lot of people saw the cloth around Link's forearms and noticed the patterning there. Many thought it was similar to Gerudo patterning. Lo and behold people began speculating that Link may have a close relationship with the Gerudo, and perhaps with Ganondorf him. Cue all the theories and fanart and fanfic of Link and Ganondorf growing up together, being close friends, knowing each other, before Ganondorf's turn to darkness. Okay so as BotW's release approaches we learn about Calamity Ganon and then we see this mysterious old man. He seems pretty large in stature and is dark skinned. Cue the second wave of rumor mills that this may be Ganondorf. Perhaps a weary old washed up soul, or perhaps a manipulation tactic while his real form, the calamity, keeps Zelda trapped inside the castle. The tapestry with the red haired hero. This one causes a big wave of rumors that perhaps the past hero was a Gerudo, maybe an iteration of Ganondorf.
The first trailer for TotK drops, we see the murals, Ganondorf's corpse, what looks like a horrifying vision of how he ended up here. Rehydrated Ganondorf starts trending. People are wild with speculations of who he was. Many link him to the hero on the tapestry. Most speculation about Ganondorf now is what sort of horrendous thing happened to him that he would end up here, and less about how evil he must have been to end up here. The official "rehydrated Ganondorf" art drops. Everyone sees his design, how he seems more heroic in this art piece. Again, people are still speculating on how complex this Ganondorf might be, between what we have seen thus far. Many note he is not smirking in this art as he usually is, perhaps a hint that his character this time might be different. And we have reached TotK Ganondorf, with the most generic evil villain writing we have seen of him yet. Ganondorf is a big appeal of the LoZ games. He deserves more than just being hot.

update to my last post about the falling zelink hug. besties we have it now not in 4K, not in 8K, but in 16K. the highest possible quality at least until someone develops a cutscene animation pause mod with freecam.
Tumblr media
computer……ENHANCE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(if this picture ever loses quality from site compression or sharing you can find the original here)
as mentioned before, zelda’s right arm is sandwiched between her and link’s chests. but now we can finally see that link’s left arm goes across her upper back and holds her left shoulder. their skintones are too close from a distance to make out the edges (though you can see it with some adjustments) but i can see what i believe is his thumb. and if worse comes to worst in terms of clarity, look at the images below in the post where you can see how link is holding her shoulder (and we can finally see that the brown thing was her wooden upper arm bracelet accessory)
there is an unfortunate quirk in the game’s graphics where distant moving objects have jittery outlines, im guessing to make them appear sharper. (but honestly the way they look up close kinda reminds me of the official art style)
like with botw, the switch’s native maximum rendering resolution for totk when docked is only 900p (and upscales to 1080p). that means an original pixel width of 1600x900. this is cropped from a resolution of 8640p, or 15360x8640 pixels.
but look at how TINY they are in the original frame. the fact that we can see this much, going from this to this is testament to how impressive this is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and from another perspective here’s the view from below
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the first picture is from the first frame of this shot! here it is in full 14K since a 16K screenshot was too big for discord just so you can see how impressive the zoom actually is relative to the rest of the shot. but here’s the one actually pictured above sourced from 16K and cropped since the filesize could actually fit when cropped.
the second picture is a crop from a larger shot as well. here’s the original 16K sourced crop and the original shot it was cropped from for reference (though not ultra HD).
all credit where its due to EDMIRE2k on twitter who ran this on their PC and sent me the screenshots in DMs
again i hope this helps artists! or fosters discussion etc

So I have a mini theory about TOTK based on the memories, major spoilers under cut
So Zelda is around 10,000 years in the past, in the Era where this iteration of Hyrule was first founded. I say this iteration because I believe that this isn't the true original Hyrule that we know to have been founded form Skyward Sword but most likely a refounding of the kingdom from further down the timeline, similar to how New Hyrule was founded by Link and Tetra after Wind Waker, but that's my own headcanon and I don't really want to deal with the whole timeline bs right now. Which is why I'm only focusing on Zelda doing time travel in TOTK.
So... my question here is, exactly how long was she in the past!? The answer is 10,000 years, I know, but I mean... how long was ZELDA in the past. Not Zelda the Light Dragon but Zelda as herself. Time travel is a finicky subject since, for us, she could have only been missing for weeks, maybe months, before the end of the game. For her it could have been much, much longer.
My idea stens from a few factors, first being her relationship with Sonia and Rauru and the second being the Imprisoning War. A little bit of Ganondorf thrown in there too.
First and foremost, the bond between Zelda and her ancestors. Queen Sonia and King Rauru treat Zelda, a literal stranger to their politics and therapy, like a daughter. Far more so than he rown father ever did! When she has something to say, they listen to her concerns and validate them. Now that could just be them being good parental figures to their decendant, but Rauru had no reason to believe a word Zelda said about her concerns over Ganondorf's treachery when, in her time, the Imprisoning War that hadn't even happened yet was little more than a legend and barely remembered history. Nobody even knew who the Zonai were by the time BOTW came along. Yet Ganondorf aoemhow knew Sonia would listen if Zelda asked to see her in private, and Sonia and Zelda were both able to put a contingency plan in effect to thwart the attamped assassination. True they failed in the end, but the initial attempt had failed and the fact Ganondorf knew Zelda's image would move Sonia to leave her protection and her husband says a lot in and of itself.
Then the war itself. First of all, war isn't a quick matter. There is jo su h thing as a fast war no matter what history claims. All war is messy and takes years to deal with the fallout. And the Imprisoning War wasn't a simple skirmish. It was a massive war that put the Hylians and their aloud forces to the rbink of extinction, one that had long lasting consequences including but not limited to the longterm exclusion of all males within the Gerudo tribe with the exception of Link over 10,000 years down the line, and even then that only happened AFTER he saved the tribe twice over. A war that is o far reaching it is mere jyth and legend yet still very present at the time of BOTW. By the time the Sages swear allegiance to Rauru, he was the last bastion against the Demon King in his rampage with the last of the Gerudo falling shortly beforehand. That is, the Gerudo who are OP as hell in BOTW in all accounts and are literally trained from childhood as elite warriors in most cases.
Zelda had FOUGHT in that war and had spent an undetermined time after its ending, preparing the Kingdome of Hyrule and the remaining survivors for Ganondorf's inevitable revival as best she could. That in and of itself will likely take years, especially since she had to find a caretaker for Rauru and Sonia's unnamed and unseen heir to ensure her bloodline lasted long enough for her own birth.
So, I bring you back to my theory... Zelda has been in the past for at least several years before she turned into the Light Dragon. She did not immediately go to the Temple of Time and swallow the secret stone. She had to have had at least several months after the war at minimum before she could transform into a dragon. I know the Tears make it appear shorter than it was but there's no way all the events of the 8 tears can happen within a span of a few months. It had to have been years.

My Thoughts on the Zelda Timeline and Tears of the Kingdom
Given how the Imprisoning War mentioned in Tears of the Kingdom contradicts the one mentioned in the prolouge of Link to the Past, Rauru and Sonia forming the Kingdom of Hyrule and being the first King and Queen (despite Ocarina of Time coming before) and the Ganondorf in this game seemingly having no recollection of past Links/Heroes and Zeldas or connection to the Ganondorf of past games...it's my guess that they reset the series lore starting with Breath of the Wild and the ten thousand years between it and the era of Myth.
youtube
Tumblr media
The only other game that stills seems to have any relevant unchanged and non-contradicted canon seems to be Skyward Sword but that's mostly due to it being a starting point, the game's director being the same as BOTW and TOTK, and the Forgotten Temple. Honestly it seems like that because they reintroduced and make allusions to key moments and figures in the series in this game like the Sages (particularly King Rauru) and Imprisoning War from LttP, and Ganondorf and him being welcomed by the King and distrusted by Zelda like he was in Ocarina of Time. I should also point out that the original Imprisoning War happens right before the Fallen Timeline which takes place after OoT, and in that Ganondorf has permanently transformed into pig Ganon after killing Time Link and attaining the full Triforce.
There are too many timeline contradictions yet intentional references in the game's story to past games that it seems like a reboot is the most credible idea.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
However at the same time, there are too many connections to previous games that take place after Skyward Sword that even the idea of a series reboot is questionable like the Temple of Time, old OoT Castle Town ruins, the sages from OoT being referenced by the stones surrounding the Master Sword and the Sheikah monks' poses during the Master Sword Trials, the Koroks and Deku Tree, the mural about Ruto's love for Time Link, Rauru sharing the name of one of the sages from OoT, and Darmani. Also, what are the chances of there being another event in Zelda lore referred to as the Imprisoning War that involves an incarnation of Ganon, sages, sealing Ganon, and one of the sages being named Rauru like the Sage of Light?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
link to image: x
Are the games during the Era of Myth just that, mythology? Fairy tales? Is there even a Triforce anymore? The symbol is shown but its not referred to as such and Ganondorf in this game shows no interest or knowledge of the Triforce like every other character. On the opposite end of this is Skyward Sword which they reinforce is connected to the latest games with Fi, the Forgotten Temple and Sealed Temple connections, the tree growing out the wall and the fact the Hylia statue gives you the Goddess Sword:
Tumblr media
It's so weird everytime Tears of the Kingdom's story made a reference to past games (that aren't Skyward Sword), when you think they are trying to connect them (like I initially thought), it turns around and makes it self-contained and isolated incident exclusive from any game that came before BOTW and Skyward Sword. With all the trouble Nintendo's had making sense of and reworking the Zelda timeline the past few decades for the fans and the success of Breath of the Wild, may be they wanted to wipe the slate clean (with Skyward Sword being the start of that initiative).
At first maybe they were hesistant which is why they stated the timelines converge into BOTW, but I guess they decided during TOTK's development or before and, again, may be due to the massive success of BOTW they just said screw it and just do it with the latest game's story showing the beginning of the Kingdom of Hyrule. These are just my messy thoughts based on my basic understanding of the timeline and theories I've heard and I welcome any other explanations.
EDIT(6/19/23)
So it's been brought to my attention that the Imprisoning War in TOTK may possibly be a second Imprisoning War (thanks @ghoul--chan ). The implications and can of worms that opens is shocking. Since Zelda was transported to the beginning of Hyrule as a kingdom and the start of the Royal Family, that would mean that she was transported to before Minish Cap. If that is true...dear goddess.... that would mean the Ganondorf in this game is one that existed before Ocarina of Time.
Tumblr media
That also implies that two incarnations of Ganondorf had been somehow co-existing at the same time during the Era of Myth with one being sealed underground. This also mean that the Imprisoning War in Link to the Past is now retroactively a callback to this hypothetical first Imprisoning War; both involve sages, both involve a sage of Light named Rauru, and both involve sealing an incarnation of Ganon. Also, this means the Rito existed before Wind Waker making this mural from Twilight Princess HD reference to that!!

89 Days Until Tears of the Kingdom Release. The Trailer Breakdown is here. Sorry Tumblr killed the image quality. This is Part Three, Part One is HERE and Part Two is HERE.
Same Warning Applies: This will be obscenely long. I have spent hours of my life on this and I even went around Hyrule in BOTW to double check things. I have also watched only one reaction/analysis video (Limcube) whose ideas I reference a few times but the rest is all me. Now, I know many of the oddities and differences could easily be explained by saying we time travel into the past but I’m going to approach this for the most part as if we are not time traveling because it's more fun this way. Also, the colors refer to the corresponding arrows/circles on the image above it.
Tumblr media
Blue: This falling green glowing block inspires many questions (like literally everything else in this dang trailer.) Why is it falling? Is it related to the odd rocks that are everywhere now? Is it similar to an elevator that could bring you down from an island or maybe up to one?  Pink: A green swirly thing!! Haven’t seen one of these in a bit. If these really are the things that send you up into the sky, I’m gonna shout “Beam me up!” before I use them.
Tumblr media
Green: Yup, that’s right. It’s a little hard to see but that is a yellow Korok flower. Ya ha ha, I found you.
Tumblr media
Pink: Ganondorf’s attack reminds me of Princess Mononoke (Studio Ghibli Movie) and that stuff that was wriggling out of the boar god. Fitting considering it curses the main character's arm.  Green: The Master Sword is already covered in malice and Link’s arm is messed up even before Ganondorf does his attack. Now this could be the second attack, Link having partially fought off the first one and sustaining damage, or it could be something else. I think there might be malice coming out from the Master Sword itself. Since it’s the sword that seals the darkness, the past darkness might be escaping as Fi is no longer strong enough to contain it.
Tumblr media
General thoughts: Poor Link looks to be in a lot of pain (understandable because that malice corruption went really far up his arm.) Again I really like the focus on his expressions.
Tumblr media
General thoughts: The simple act of dropping the Master Sword (sorry Fi) says so much about Link’s worry for Zelda. I think we are in for an emotional ride in terms of the TOTK story. Red: This area on his thigh makes me wonder just how far the malice corruption spread down his right side.
Tumblr media
General thoughts: I can’t believe the Champion’s Tunic gets destroyed to such a degree. I mean it’s obvious that someone fixes it later since Link wears it during the rest of this trailer but still. Stupid malice ruining the tunic Zelda made for Link. I’m attached to the damn tunic. Pink: It’s interesting that other parts of Link’s gear appear burned/corroded. I really wonder what watching the full cutscene in game will be like.
Tumblr media
General thoughts: I mean what can I say about this shot other than I’m worried about everyone in it. I’m worried for Zelda’s safety, I’m worried about Link’s injuries, and I’m worried about poor Fi who is also falling and damaged pretty badly. Plus, Link really reached out for Zelda with his injured hand, willing to suffer more pain if he could avoid being separated from her. I love their bond but I’m also expecting Nintendo to make us suffer emotional distress. Words: “Please, lend him your power.” This is what Zelda says in the English dub. When I first heard it I wondered if Zelda was praying to the goddess Hylia. It certainly is an odd choice to play that voice clip right before showing a situation where Zelda seems to be in far more need of power. However, Limcube mentioned that the German dub says something along the lines of “You have to save him” and the “you” in that sentence addresses either a group of people (possibly the Zonai) or someone of extreme importance (could be Hylia.) I also think Zelda could be talking to the spirit hand thing.
Tumblr media
General thoughts: And last but not least, the entire reason I started this account. Soon, my friends. Soon we will be able to play TOTK and get answers to all of our burning questions.
Finally, I congratulate you for making it to the end of my Tears of the Kingdom trailer breakdown. As you can plainly see, I am perfectly sane about this game. Thank you and have a good day. THE END.

More Rito Headcanons!
Something of an expansion of my "Rito Biology 101" post, but I'm not going to bother with the in-universe POV and talking about a couple different things here so...
Here's the original. Now that TotK is out, we got some new info so I'm going to go over things. (Namely a new Tribe for Penn and some thoughts on the aged up kiddos.) There my be some minor spoilers in the images, so I'm going to put them below the read more line.
Minor edit: 7/30/23, realized that one of the new NPC's mentioned something I forgot to talk about!
Tumblr media
New Rito Guy! Penn is a reporter who you team up with for a few sidequests. Clearly he's some kind of pelican, so a quick search on Wikipedia and... Pelca Tribe (from Pelecanus the genus that contains all living pelicans)
So a couple things here. One: the triangles on his little sash reminds me of Kass' scarf. (What did you do to Kass Nintendo?!) Two: his outfit appears to be made of some kind of blue leather. I'm assuming that all Rito wear leather armor basically (except Saki and the little ones). Interestingly, I had drawn an axe that had talon grip handles in the axe head that are sometimes made out of leather sourced from blue monster hides. Doubt that's the case here since he's not a warrior but still...
Tumblr media
His catchphrase... You can see they did the little hook on his beak! Is that yellow on his chest part of his clothes? Hm...
Tumblr media
Including this because, A: this is quite possibly my favorite quote from him and B: you can see he has webbed feets! (Still say they should have given the Rito four toes but whatever...)
Tumblr media
Look at his tiny pen and notebook! (The dangles on his hood are shaped like pens!)
Okay, that's enough Penn for now... In other news, new color morphs just dropped ya'll!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the first guy looks like he might be a shade or two lighter than Huck, but the second guy is a new color altogether. We gots purple Orni Tribe Ritos now! Really don't have much to say about these two, but more variety is nice.
EDIT: Actually I do have something to say about Ornest. He mentions that all Rito have the ability to manipulate the wind, something I was theorizing to be the case. So, headcanon confirmed!
Moving on to the kiddos!
Tumblr media
Kotts! Again her headband makes me think of her father's scarf and I miss him so much!
Tumblr media
Here's BotW Kotts for comparison. As you can see, the white on her face is starting to fade, and she's lost her "bangs", and her head is starting to be more bird shaped. Rough estimation is that TotK is around 5 years after BotW and I'm assuming that she's 5 during BotW so that would make her 10 in TotK. (I'm going with Rito living around 80 years on average BTW).
Tumblr media
She's almost as tall as Link! Also that dialog speaks to me on like, a molecular level. (She gets up at 10AM BTW) Also note her Saki-like clothing.
Tumblr media
BotW Molli
Tumblr media
TotK Molli
I, uh, don't think she grew at all...
She wants to make cool arrows so her dad will use them with his bows... (Why's there no emoji/emoticon button?! I need a big eyed sad face here!)
Tumblr media
Speaking of her dad... Here enjoy this totally unrelated to anything I'm talking about shot of Harth actually standing! He gets to do stuff in this game guys! (Can you believe I almost forgot he existed when I went from BotW to Age of Calamity? How could I forget this unique bird?!)
Last but not least, Bird Son himself...
Tumblr media
Tulin!!!! Look at this adorable little guy! LOOK AT HIM!!!!
I like to think he admires the hell out of Link and so he's mimicking Link's pose as much as he can. Speaking of which... Get that guy a cowboy outfit and a giant belt buckle!
Tumblr media
Look at him some more!
Tumblr media
So I don't know if that's eyeliner or just natural markings but he's doing his mom's thing and I can't even you guys!
I am SO normal about these birds...
*regains composure*
Okay, so what have we learned from this? Rito start off with blue sclera (the whites of the eye) when they're little. Around 10 or so the sclera becomes white and the irises are blue. Given that neither Kass nor Amali have blue eyes, I'm going to assume at some point their daughters will develop yellow eyes like them. Tulin... Let's just say his eyes stay blue.
Fluffy white baby feathers on the face slowly fade over the years until they their faces are solid colors (Orni Tribe at least). Tulin's little bun, is this like his mom's "hair" or more like his dad's floof? His he tying it back? You can make out something around the base of it in that second image of him so I think so... What if he ends up with a braid like the Ancient Wind Sage? (Why couldn't you just name them Nintendo? You could have just used the Divine Beasts' names and it would have been fine!)
None of the kids have proper tail feathers yet, so I hesitate to call them juveniles... Give them a few more years and they'll probably start growing them.
I like Penn, and pelican/waterfowl Rito fit in with ideas I was having for my fanfic so... Just gotta find a way to fit him in...
I made it so that different Rito settlements have different symbols. Normally these would be found on the cloth around their waist. However, Penn has this unique symbol on his chestpiece... Granted there's some similar symbols around the village but...

TotK impressions
Officially finished the game! Thoughts under the cut. Potentially light spoilers.
Mechanics fun, visuals beautiful, everything related to the story... weak.
If I split the story into two parts - part one being the ideas and maybe like a bulleted list of events, and part two being the actual "writing", like dialgoue and how the world reacts / interacts with the story: Part one (ideas), good. A lot of promise. Cool thoughts / interactions / images potential. Neat additions to existing lore (usual mixed of bag of confusing additions to, but welcome to Zelda, I guess). Plenty of opportunities for interesting character development or emotional growth or world building.
But the second part (execution) is where it all kind of falls down for me. In the first BotW, the flashbacks ADDED to the story, they didn't repeat each other, they interacted additively or multiplicatively with each other, but they could exist on their own. They tended to define or elaborate on character and relationship dynamics, with only light touches on plot points, which you were mostly getting through the modern-day interactions. I think that's probably most of how it didn't wind up confusing no matter what order you found them in.
I found in TotK the flashbacks were repetitive as Hell and often confusing. At first I thought maybe I was just finding them in a bad order, but then I found them all and I was like, oh, no, it wasn't the order. They just were trying to tell a certain kind of story with a vehicle that's either ill-suited or else they didn't know how to use it properly. I was so confused so often and there were so many things I just had to accept because it was clear the game was never going to offer anything more on the subject.
There was very little character development. I think I was supposed to care about Mineru waaaaaaaay more than I did by the end. This is the closest I've come to liking a Rauru in a Zelda game, and I actually think I could get there with this one, except there was a weird kind of vibe that left me feeling like the was stealing attention/thunder/story from Zelda that made me low key awkward, even when he was being cool.
The tone shifts in the flashbacks were wild, and there was little to no build-up to those shifts. There didn't feel like there was any real emotional continuity or arc between them, even though they had an order, and were relaying a linear narrative.
The world in general utterly failed to acknowledge ANYTHING I had done or knowledge I had at any point, and that significantly contributed to my confusion. I knew where Zelda was and what was going on with the stories about where she was waaaaaaaaaay before I got to the end of those questlines. So why did the world act like I didn't? I had the Master Sword and the world kept pretending I didn't yet.
I am EXTREMELY confused about how this game fits into the official timeline. With the note for those who are somehow here and yet not aware of my general position about the timeline, which is that I don't care about it and don't consider it much overall. But they made an official timeline, and there's supposed to be some sort of internal logic to stuff based on it. So why did this game feel SO MUCH like a complete retcon replacement of OOT? Is it supposed to be? Because it felt like it. Except it can't be. But it kind of has to be? But it's not. But I think it's meant to be? I'm confused.
Where'd the Divine Beasts go? Where'd the Sheikah tech stuff go? Why do people who I definitely knew very well in BotW not know who I am?
Why are the original sages wearing masks all the time and they don't get to be actual characters or people?
I just have a lot of questions and I'm honestly annoyed at the waste of a Zelda story with such good bones.

How do I give my anime designs more character? I don’t want them to look bland, especially not the girls!
I had a whole different argument here and suddenly realised I was answering a question you didn't ask. I'm sick at the moment so my brain isn't working the best so forgive me if my answers seems a bit all over the place.
Most importantly, and something i think a LOT of modern anime does badly these days, is to not be afraid to PUSH the expressions of your anime girls.
if you'll forgive the mini-rant; modern anime has a really bad habit of not allowing female characters to have "ugly" expressions. Or when they do, they make them simplified emojis or make the one second of extreme emotion SO extreme it becomes completely off putting. Especially as there will be a tendency to only push an extreme expression in one single episode during a "dramatic scene".
This results in most girls in modern anime looking more like the limited expression range of a Vtuber than actual characters. There ARE exceptions, but this is a MASSIVE issue which was not the case in the 80s or 90s and only really started becoming more common around the mid 2000s.
Comparison examples! (you know I love those). I am using still images instead of gifs so the animation doesn't mask the drawing. But I'll show some animated gifs later in this ask
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This extends beyond just facial expressions tho. Or rather... it doesn't.
Most modern anime shows will have the characters pull expressions in their face, but have their bodies relatively static, even in extreme emotions. If you compare the two screenshots above, the more modern example has a more extreme push to her eyes, but in the Dirty pair screenshot, not only is Kei's mouth open very wide, but her head is tilted backwards and to the side, her shoulders are drawn up, and she gives the impression even in a still image that she is in the middle of a physical reaction to something which annoyed her. Similarly, Yuri down there is also annoyed, and even though we only really see her eyes, you can tell she's hunched over and seething. In the modern anime screenshot she's just.... got the default "these are my angry eyes!" face with nothing really happening elsewhere.
Tumblr media
Her shoulders I guess are kind of drawn up but so barely you wouldn't be blamed to think they always look like that.
And this comes to the second point.
DRAW FROM LIFE AND/OR PHOTOS.
There is NOTHING wrong using a pose doll to figure out a challenging pose. I have used pose dolls when I am unsure how a certain pose looks from a specific angle. But looking at real life, whether photos or if you can, life drawing, will be your biggest tool in figuring out how to breathe more life into your poses and art.
Now, to answer the ACTUAL question you asked about design;
I have to admit that character design is not a strength of mine. I have little to no practice with it myself and when I design OCs I end up not liking them or not enjoying their designs. I feel someone far more skilled at the design part of design might have better input, but I can tell you what I know just from observation;
The first BIG advice is; do not confuse interesting design with clutter.
This doesn't mean strip down your character design to look like a Y/N drawing, but more have every element you introduce into your design be there with some kind of thought in mind as to how it applies to the character and who they are as a person. This is a mistake I often see made with characters both OCs as well as professionally. Where character designers seem to think adding MORE to a design will make a character more interesting to look at. (PreCure has this problem a LOT)
Giving your character too many details without some kind of larger unification or idea, makes them harder to envision for people, because there's too much visual noise.
If I tell you to think of Link from Legend of Zelda, it doesn't matter WHICH Link you picture 9although at the moment it's most likely TotK or BotW Link), Link has unified design elements which means regardless of how detailed or cluttered his outfit becomes, we all know what Link looks like;
1: Blonde hair on the longer side usually, with fringe and side bangs 2: blue diamond shaped eyes, pointed ears, light skin 3: wears some variation of green. Can dress in other colours but Green is an identifying colour. Even in ToTK and BotW where he is most often shown in blue, Green is still the vast majority of the outfits and gear he will wear 4: boots and light coloured tights/pants 5: Twink
You don't need to look at a picture of Link to know this is what Link looks like. Other details like his earring, belts, gloves, bracers, undershirt etc are all there and enhance these elements and distinguish one Link from another exist, but they are not the unifying elements to Link's character design.
On top of this, all of Link's character design make SENSE for his character, what he does, where he comes from etc.
He is a Hylian so he has pointed ears and is generally elf-like in appearance. He spends most of his time in European forests so he dresses in green. When he wears other colours it usually corresponds to where he is currently traveling. He carries a sword and shield so he has a belt with scabbard. He carries an entire pantry worth of food with him, so he has various satchels and bags on his person (but not too many or the design becomes cluttered). He wears light protective gear to show he gets into fights but they are usually not heavy in nature because Link is nimble and relies heavily on movement.
This doesn't tell us anything about his personality because Link doesn't really have one, but it's a very strong character design all the same and informs us what kind of character he is and what sort of life he leads as well as what sort of background he might have (He is a skilled adventurer. Not a rich sheltered boy who has never been outside of a city before or something of the like).
Tumblr media
Now I'm gonna compare him to the character design of a Mass Effect character which I don't THINK you'd have played since your profile says you're a teen and the game is rated M 👀 (or you might have, idk I'm not your mom) but ANYWAY! Looking at a character design which tells us about their PERSONALITY as well as way of living.
I'm not going to use any of the aliens as examples because then you have to bring in the subject of alien species into the equation and how they stand apart from the various other members of their species and etc etc. So we'll talk about a human character.
So... this is Jack
Tumblr media
Although you may think her tattoos make her design cluttered, they don't because you don't really need to know what every individual tattoo looks like. You just know "Jack is covered in Tattoos".
So just looking at her, you can pretty much instantly pin down her personality. That being; she will most likely fucking stab you if you say one thing to annoy her.
She's like a punk on steroids. Shaved head, heavy make up, COVERED in tattoos, both ears capped in some futuristic piercings, some or other heavy duty uniform except she decided she'd rather walk around fucking topless and boots that could crush a man's skull.
Everything about her design screams "don't fuck with me I am VERY unhinged and will kill a man for less than the $4 in his pocket".
Jacks' entire personality is on display in her design. And the design as a whole present a single concept of who she is as a person, while ALSO tying into her backstory and lifestyle. (escaped prisoner from high security facility, still wearing the prison uniform, has been in an unknown number of gangs, has an extremely casual approach to sex and sexuality, uses her intimidation as a first line of defense to prevent people from getting close to her indicating a painful past)
And then you compare her to her design in the following game
Tumblr media
This is a great design because it not only informs you on Jack's personality, but also her GROWTH AS A CHARACTER.
Her design is, at least compared to her first appearance, softer. She's grown her hair long enough to tie it into a ponytail, making her appear more feminine. But she still shaves the sides so you know she can still shank you if she wants.
Her outfit is still VERY revealing but she's also dressed borderline decently. She is not as defensive any more and could probably even walk around in normal society without getting a ticket (and then shooting the cop in response).
However even covered up, she's wearing a leather studded jacket, and she is still displaying her tattoos on her chest and hands proudly. She's still the same person... just less likely to murder you (although the option is still there if needed).
Now compare these character designs to some others which I would count as being "too busy" and tell me if these designs tell you ANYTHING about what kind of personalities these characters might have, what kind of lifestyle to they live, what do their environments and world looks like, or what it says about them
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun fact; that last one is NOT a magical girl, but is in fact an alchemist who is living in a slowly dying world whose resources are being depleted and the future looks grim and hopeless as humanity tries to navigate this slow apocalypse.
I have no idea if any of that made sense or is useful in any way, but hopefully you get what I mean?
Look at real life. Don't rely on just referencing other anime and pose dolls. Don't clutter a character design with details that don't mean anything. make the parts of your character design you use have meaning or purpose. Even if that purpose is just "to give them a silhouette different to the other characters so she's easy to identify by sight"

i stumbled into a particular botw rabbit hole which is the sixth hylian script used throughout botw and totk because i wanted to transcribe zelda's journal into hylian script and i found some absolutely fascinating things and also some potentially groundbreaking lore revelations like THE MONTH OF APRIL AND APRIL FOOL'S DAY BEING CANON
(in depth findings under the cut)
image and translation source https://zelda.fandom.com/wiki/Hylian_Language_Translations/Breath_of_the_Wild
1) it seems that the hylian script is the official writing system throughout hyrule. the gerudo have their own script but you can find written hylian script in gerudo town too. even the zora signposts are in hylian script although the zora seem to have their own script too
2) hylian script has little to no punctuation
Tumblr media
first page transcription:
april first
today was a dry hot and sunny day i went to school this diary is
very important document
second page transcription
april second
yesterday was fools day
everything that i wrote was false
that is all
see you tomorrow
sometimes a new sentence will start from a new line but not always; the title is separated by an empty line, and an empty line may be inserted to signal a paragraph break. notice also the lack of commas, full stops and apostrophes.
3) APRIL FOOL'S DAY IS CANON IN BREATH OF THE WILD AND TEARS OF THE KINGDOM. (and also the month of april.)
4)
Tumblr media
here the small text is too blurry for me to decipher but it gives us immense insight into the hylian script text structure. a new paragraph, even the first one, may be indicated by an indent; in here, a new sentence within a paragraph seems to be indicated by a new line.
Tumblr media
although it seems that you can just go buckwild and do whatever you want.
5) hyrule has not had a government or any kind of formal education for 100 years so it's a wonder the literacy rates are still so high despite all that; even in the little farming village of hateno, written notices and accounts are posted on walls and noticeboards. literacy must be highly valued among the common folk if the parents are teaching their kids to read despite living off of manual labor mostly
6) the sheikah use the same script but written top to bottom, right to left the same way as japanese text is written, which i find fascinating

OKAY SO I’M GONNA ANALYZE THE HELL OUT OF THE TOTK TRAILER NOW
(the screenshots are gonna be sorta outta order bc of grouping for analysis)
LONG POST WARNING
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First thing, there’s those twisty green things that were over ganon in the first teaser! It’s interesting that one of them is in Hateno… especially because that other shot doesn’t seem to be over Hateno, so there’s multiple?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What are these dudes??? Mini-Dragons??? Are they related to the three dragons we already know of??? I’m terrified by the fact that they can carry other enemies…
Also that’s a heat-seeking arrow!!! Will there be other new arrows???
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s more of those markings, like from the Title Reveal Trailer! Still no real evidence of where they came from, though…
Plus, the third image has that glow around the towers… It kinda makes me wonder what role they’ll have during the new game? Is this an indication of the towers also being lifted into the sky alongside the castle? Because this shot appears to be prior to the islands appearing...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, there's only one shot of a sky island that's in the stormy weather! But, meanwhile, there's numerous shots from on top of sky islands, as well as with plenty in the background.
This leads me to a belief that there's going to be a part of the early game which comes before parts of the ground (such as hyrule and the towers) lift into the air, and that part of the game will be in stormy weather. Then, when whatever happens with ganon's corpse... happens, everything will be lifted into the sky.
However, I don't think we're just getting new areas in the form of the sky...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...because it seems pretty clear there are some major cave areas now, too! Besides the fact that the First-Look Trailer takes place fully underground, it seems like some pretty major parts of the story are related to the underground. I find it interesting that both these shots are mini-bosses. Kilton's gonna have something to say about that.
Also, what's on the Hinox's neck? I don't think we've seen anything like that before. It is that same shade of green from the spirals earlier in the trailer/from the First-Look Trailer, which is interesting...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Blood Moon seems like it's gonna be a lot more involved this time around. I almost feel like you might actually have to be actively able to keep playing while it occurs, instead of it just being a weekly cutscene.
Also, the side of the castle looks to be absolutely coated in malice, though that's not much of a surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene really caught my attention. It's so strange!!!
Those are definitely guardian arms, and the floor's texture is reminiscent of a shrine (actually, we don't physically see any of the shrines in any of the trailers, which is strange...). But the rest of the building is very clearly Hylian-made. It's even got a Sheikah logo in the corner.
Plus, this is very clearly just a building somewhere since you can see the outside under the curtains. I wonder if this is a new tech lab built on some newly uncovered Sheikah structure's remains. A new tech lab, maybe? Kakariko didn't have one, after all, and Link's got a new piece of clearly-Sheikah tech attached to him...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the topic of structures, actually, there's a couple parts of the floating islands that are very geometric. In fact, the cube in the second shot (which appears five whole times in the trailer, jeez.) is actually the North Lomai Labyrinth, I noticed, which is absolutely insane.
Is the other structure a new labyrinth? Because both the others in botw were rectangles... Also, isn't the North Lomai Labyrinth attributed to the Zonai, the group that people are speculating will be heavily involved in this game... it's all very interesting.
Also, it's worth noting that that giant-drone thing Link is on is the third of three shots of Link piloting various vehicles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that there are multiple modes of aerial transport makes a lot of sense, because the only real "flight" Link has is the paraglider, which can't go upwards on it's own, and I doubt they'd make us rely solely on finding updrafts and using Revali's gale for the whole game (if we even have access to the latter anymore).
But the car is very interesting. The fact that we'd need a car at all implies that getting around on the ground is gonna be rougher than before. And it also looks very much like it's Zonai-made based on the structures we've seen which are attributed to them. Mainly the dragon heads on the front wheels, that's blatant Zonai. The hovercraft also looks Zonai, though the hot air balloon is definitely Hylian.
Tumblr media
We also visibly see Link fish a wheel out of the mud in another shot (using his new arm, no less!). And that chest in the background also looks to be of similar origin, and also locked? It seems similar to the skull chests that open upon defeating an enemy camp... I wonder if those chests have a different task connected to them. (A replacement for Korok puzzles, perhaps?)
Tumblr media
Jumping somewhere completely unrelated, there's so much to unpack in this shot.
First off, I have almost no clue where this is. I thought it was that forest with the flat-topped trees before, but it definitely doesn't look like that upon closer inspection. It actually appears to in some giant cave, which lends more to the idea that we'll be venturing both in the sky and below ground.
I think the enemies here are malice-infected Lizalfos and a Bokoblin. I find it very interesting that the Bokoblin are mining. It seems like the enemies are definitely smarter this time around. (Which does align with Ganon's dialogue that begins on this shot.)
That glowing tree in the background is also very strange, but I don't know enough about Zelda lore as a whole to really make any calls there, I think. Best I can say is that it looks significant.
Tumblr media
This is another very perplexing shot. It's obvious what's going on; Link's moving the island with the weird floaty thing, again using his arm. The floaty thing he's controlling seems to be the same shape as the island, no less.
It looks a bit similar to the Apparatus from a couple of the same-named shrines in BotW, which makes me worried about motion controls, but I'm too elated over the trailer to actually be that nervous about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene is very interesting. It's clearly pulled from a cutscene of sorts, but who's in it and what's happening is hard to parse.
First instincts told me this was a new scene of Link being re-knighted in some way, or something along those lines, post BotW. The white dress is very remiscent of Zelda, and we know Link has the hand. But then I thought about it a bit more and realized that didn't really make all that much sense.
I saw a different post that said they might be the princess and soldier from 10,000 years prior to BotW, the ones on the tapestry. That post also made me consider if this is Hylia and Demise.
Though, then I wondered (and someone with real Zelda Lore knowledge is gonna have to help me here); If Hylia's reincarnations are Zelda and Demise's reincarnations are Ganon, do we know who's reincarnating as Link? If we don't, is this them? Is this when Hylia recruits a protector for the Zeldas throughout time?
Tumblr media
And, of course, this shot. If this doesn't confirm Zelda as being playable, I don't know what does. "But Link, I'm not sure you'll be able to stop him. Please, lend me your power!" is Zelda's full quote in the trailer, and it sounds very "It's dangerous to go alone"-like. The second half is over this shot, even, which I feel adds to the evidence that Zelda will be an active player this time.
(Also, Zelda's pose in this scene looks like that one horizontal figure from the mural in the Name-Reveal Trailer, right?)
-------
But anyway, I've hit the image limit for Tumblr posts, so that's as far as I go with this post. I'll be making a lot more posts about TotK in the next few months, and I've decided to delegate them to a different blog, @robot-gaming, because I wanna spare my mutuals and followers from this being the only thing I post about for the next half of the year.

Note
It was funny at first, depictions of the hydrated Ganondorf, but I believe Nintendo saw this and decided to sell this image to the mainstream audience buying their game.
The success of tall Lady D dominating the RE 8 advertisements also helps to support this as Twitter was very 'down bad' for her and really helped with sales.
I don't doubt that the rehydrated phenomena surrounding Ganondorf following the reveal trailer for Tears of the Kingdom had a hand in influencing TotK Ganondorf's final design. This might be the second time they use Ganondorf specifically as a selling point of the game (the same had been done for Twilight Princess in order to attract fans of OoT following the grumblings around Wind Waker's toonish design). Mind you, however, that the design elements present on dehydrated Ganondorf were very reminiscent of what we did see in the final design (and many rehydrated designs by fans were not that far off from his final look as a result), but I feel like they may have tried to lean in more on the sexy factor. The sexy villain that everyone loves to thirst after and objectify is nothing new. It's the danger and intrigue, the ability to imagine yourself with this person or monster who is dangerous, cunning, manipulative, and murderous in a way where they can't actually hurt you in turn. This is a fascination that has been with people for ages. It's a great selling point for a character and the story they came from. Personally, when it comes to Ganondorf, I'm not going to lie and pretend I don't find him insanely attractive physically. I have since his OoT days. I have written my fair share of nsfw stories that range from vanilla to questionable, and have indulged in my very, very fair share of fanart and fanfic of that nature. However, it's all the other baggage Ganondorf comes with that people lean into along with the sexualization that...bothers me I would say. There is something disturbing about Ganondorf being not only a man of the desert, but the only man of the desert, being portrayed as someone who not only sexually ravenous, but super duper sexually ravenous because he has to satisfy all his women somehow, and then leaning into that sexual rabidness in order to defile the "holy sanctity of Hyrule" aka Link and Zelda because that is what he would do obviously, right? Then you have the other end of the spectrum where his sexuality is used to portray submission to Hyrule and its light, where he has accepted the goodness and light and see he doesn't fuck like an animal anymore, great. It's like people can't see Ganondorf as a...person with a normal way of looking at his own sexuality. Of course this is not the biggest issue for me; for me it is the fact that Ganondorf is an extreme exaggeration of how the dirty desert terrorist man is often portrayed. Nintendo didn't have to insert any of that in an obvious way for people to draw that conclusion, and I suppose that's where some of my discomfort lies.
This doesn't even touch on how suddenly we're faced with the biggest terrorist darkness of Hyrule being a canonical bisexual/queer icon and all the implications of that when it comes to sexual depravity... EDIT: What I mean is that, the extreme sexuality that surrounds Ganondorf is a very deeply ingrained facet of Orientalism. The white, refined European man had to save these beautiful women from their savage men who would keep them all enclosed in the harem, men who had multiple women and oppressed them and kept them hidden away so that they may be the only ones to indulge in the beauty of their women and partake in them sexually. BotW/TotK really leaned into *that* part with all the men trying to get into Gerudo Town.

TotK mini comic wips :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven't drawn the floor and background of the second image, also I still don't know if it's for the second or third panel XD I keep forgetting Wild's scars, gotta add them later! I kept his "normal" totk clothes instead of the LU ones, as I'm going to do 2 versions: one with LU elements (for example Zelda nicknamed "Flora") and one more canon-like version. The plot won't change though!
General plot idea: Wild feels lonely there. He had just found Flora, they were starting to get along, and he lost her again. He had lost the chain as he was forced to get back for this adventure, and he had lost the champions as they moved on at the end of botw. Even Fi wasn't there, or she was really hurt at most. The first thing is a series of thoughts he has about being lonely there, and not really wanting another adventure, one of the things I'm planning to write is "maybe Legend was right about Hylia" Then, he hears a familiar voice and turns back, surprised in a good way: it's Sky's spirit. Sky appears on his side and tells him he's not alone, the entire kingdom now knows him and will be there for him, and mostly, Sky says he will appear every time he needs him. As for Flora, Sun is already aiding her. Before disappearing, Sky tells him everything will be ok at the end, and he'll maybe be able to join the chain again

Hang on. I'm being a turkey again.
⚠️Totk Spoilers/timeline speculation ahead.⚠️
I know it's a commonly held belief that all the timelines merged for BOTW/TOTK. But like... what if they didn't?
Follow me here.
What if, for the TOTK ancient past, we're looking at a timeline split so far back that it DOES pre-date Skyward Sword? We see a good amount of ruins, and there's enough technological overlap between the ancient past in Skyward Sword and Tears of the Kingdom, to conclude that the tech in Skyward Sword is old Zonai tech.
Now, this also means the "Ancient Robots" are actually constructs. This makes sense. There's some overlap in functionality and tasks there.
The timeline split isn't with Ganondorf's attack, and it isn't with the Zonai. It's with Zelda, who causes a butterfly effect the moment she arrives in the past. Her existence in that time causes the chain reaction that leads to her own birth.
Her presence leads to the sealing of Ganondorf; on that, I digress. The sealing of Ganondorf leads to the first Calamity, as mentioned in Breath of the Wild. The battle leads to 10,000 years of peace(no Ganon). Then Zelda is born. Her birth leads into the second Calamity, but doesn't directly cause it. They must coincide because she must go under the castle. She must go under the castle to awaken Ganondorf* and pick up the secret stone that causes the split in the timeline and her very existence(Oraboris anyone?).
Now, to elaborate on what I previously digressed: Zelda's presence in the ancient past led to Ganondorf being sealed. You might hate this part, but it's vital to this theory, so I'm sorry in advance.
Zelda's arrival causes Ganondorf to revolt in the way that he does. He uses the puppet of her to bait Sonia into turning her back to him so he can kill her and take her secret stone. W/o Zelda, he doesn't do that, Sonia lives, and he never gets a secret stone. He does still revolt in an attempt to get better resources for the desert, he's easily stopped without a secret stone. Thus leaving his reputation intact with the Gerudo when he fails, leading us into the timeline with which leads to OoT where the new King of the Gerudo bears his name and attempts a similar coup d'état.
Now, Skyward Sword happens anyway. Because Demise still rises, he still gets sealed as the Imprisoned, and the Link/hero of that era kills him and gets cursed.
Whether or not the timeline changes much from here is up to the theorist. However, I think it does only a little. Instead of things happening in 3 separate timelines, it happens in one very tangly timeline where everything happens from Ocarina to Twilight Princess, from Twilight Princess to the Downfall timeline, from the downfall timeline to the Great Sea timeline.
Somewhere along there, the sea levels fall, they return to the historic lands, and the setting we know for Breath of the Wild starts to take shape.
Another important bit: Sheikah Tech is a reinterpretation of Zonai tech. After Rauru and Mineru are killed in the ancient past of ToTK, the Sheikah attempt to recreate and continue the technological legacy of the Zonai. They create the Shrine of Resurrection with a specific tragically lost queen in mind(Sonia), and the Divine Beasts in the vague image of the helms of the Sages, to honor the non-Hylian races who survived the Demon King's attack. Naturally, they're intended as protectors. They didn't have enough might to defeat the Demon King, so they made the guardians in case Zelda's warnings came true sooner rather than later.
The guardians proved useful the first time, but someone(read "a noble") panicked and had them bury the tech. Likely because they feared they might be used against a corrupt monarch to sieze power for the people--because honestly, after that display of strength, what power-hungry ruler wouldn't want to destroy it?
That leads us into the set up to Breath of the Wild, where they're researching and digging up Sheikah Tech.
Post Breath of the Wild, Zelda, Purah, and Robbie(and maybe even Link and a few others), discover that Zonai tech are the more stable roots of Sheikah Tech. In an effort to expand the capabilities of their own technology, they nearly abandon Sheikah Tech in favor of Zonai research. Purah uses Sheikah Tech and some Zonai methods to build the towers.
Now we reach the set up to Tears of the Kingdom.
Circling back to Ganondorf and Demise and how it could make sense for Ganondorf to be there underground while other Ganondorfs make chaos and nightmares on the surface: The Ganondorf of the ancient past isn't Demise. No, he's a priest of Demise. He doesn't hold Demise's spirit. He's his own, terrifying bastard. At the start, in the ancient past.
Demise's curse doesn't involve him. He's sealed, biding his time under the castle. He can't, however, reanimate without power that not even a secret stone can bestow. When it's time, it's Demise's spirit who reanimates Ganondorf's body. It's no longer Ganondorf you're fighting, though he is most certainly in there somewhere.
And where's the triforce?
Well, I have no clue. For this to work, the dragons can't be in the ancient past if they swallowed it, they also can't be Zonai. Unless there's other shenanigans we don't see... maybe there is no triforce in this timeline, because it was swallowed by three Zonai at the start to protect the world from Demise. I... can't come up with anything else for that. Good luck.
