If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll know that this character, Feferi Peixes means a LOT to me. She was a character I latched onto when I was 11 years old, reading Homestuck for the very first time. She was my first cosplay, all the way back in February 2014 (ah, Quotev days), which introduced me to a community of Tumblr ask blog cosplayers- many of whom I still talk to and cheer on in their projects today! She’s why I go by Feffles online- borne from the experiences on a long dead roleplay website called Flarping.com that had just the kindest, most welcoming community. All that to say, to be able to actually cosplay Feferi Peixes in her unaltered state for the very first time, almost ten years after the first time I tried is a very very big moment for me.

Typically, I would post a Homestuck project or makeup look in honour of 4/13. I still did a makeup look (and you can find that on my TikTok: cinnominbubble), but with it being 15 years of Homestuck, 13 years of my own personal connection to the story, and 10 years since I first tried my hand at cosplaying this character for the very first time, it felt far more fitting to post my gill herself.

I cannot wait to be able to build onto this cosplay, making more iterations like her dream self, and Beforus iteration, and Godtier, and watch as my own cosplay growth comes in the next ten years.

i need to work on my scar makeup (lemme tell you, fresh injuries are much easier to do compared to healed injuries when you don’t use foundation/don’t have a lot of eye shadow that’s skin toned) but i got pink sweats and i’m using a sleeveless black shirt and it GAVE GENDER (if gender was an exhausted anime dad. which it is. thanks aizawa) like i think imma sew a lil “tired” somewhere semi-noticeable tmr. also i slightly darkened my eye bags and just greyed out my chin like a stubble and i wasn’t mad about it, like it turned out better than i thought it would ngl, using only eyeshadow

I really love Y/N's look, what led you to add things like double rows of teeth? What led you to that design? Was there another one design before?

i repurposed an old self insert oc i had as a teenager bc i wanted to be self indulgent! some edgy gothic white haired girl with a fringe over one eye lmao😋 i miss her...

their colour palette is pale and greyish as a nod to the grey Y/Ns in this community, their hair is white bc mine used to be white, and their hairstyle is one i used to wear swimming! i was also inspired by futuristic white aesthetics and Suichu Niso underwater modelling shoots.

i pretty much immediately settled on Y/N as they are here including webbed feet and finger scarring, and then built on more alien features later. the 4th image down is actually the first time i drew them. i think i got the idea for the teeth about a month into writing, prior to the first chapter going up. mostly i decide on things by daydreaming a funny or angsty scenario based on their alien heritage, and then seeing if i can work it into the story without it seeming clumsy or overcomplicating matters for myself. i overcomplicate things a lot😅 for example i'm regretting having two suits. and two subs. why did i do that?? lol

there's a scene coming up soon after chapter 12 involving the teeth and Vanessa - that's the scenario that inspired Y/N's lil shark teeth. i was also thinking that if i met a mermaid i would totally want a scale as a souvenir, but what would be the mermaid equivalent? hair? a fingernail makes me shiver. but teeth, when losing a row is a semi-regular affair, would be cool. even humans collect teeth!

i don't have a concrete image in mind yet for the natives of Y/N's home planet, but it's something in the realm of humanoid-fish-person, scaly, they have hair but it's not human-grade. an alien unfamiliar with humanoids would easily mistake them for regular humans (they got four legs and a little round head, right?) whereas humans and the fish people would be very offended to be lumped in together lmao. as a result i got a lot of freedom with what Y/N gets to inherit! their human-ness is bit of a disappointment to their guardian tho, so they don't get the full deck of fishy cards.

this might be tmi, some rambling about MEEE!! at first the evidence of having alien features removed was going to be more drastic - i thought over flippers surgically mutated into human feet, a missing tail, scales laser-removed - but decided against those. i was having a really tough time with my disability and chronic pain, and i wanted to live vicariously through Y/N, so they pass as able-bodied. i can't run or swim anymore so it's nice that they can. i think the missing finger webbing counts as a disability, esp when taking into account their issues with managing the discomfort from the scar tissue, and having to actively maintain their health to avoid the drawbacks that would arise from this kind of amputation. Y/N should be grateful i wanted to cosplay as able-bodied, otherwise they'd be far worse off😌🫰

I am not up to date with Ulysses lore (I plan to binge it and catch up soon) however with what I see floating around on the Web and how Connor explains the lore + character, it does Peek my interest very much...

WHAT IS GRUESOME GRRL?

Gruesome grrl is a queering and evolution of Riotgrrrl. Gruesome grrl is for the femmes that aren't usually accepted in femme spaces. This is for the femmes that due to their transness, their brashness, and their inability to compromise, exist on the edges of what 'woman' means. Some reject womanhood outright for an alternative nonbinary trans masculinity. Some see femininity as the absolute trap that it is. These are women who reject conventional femininity for something more butch, more futch and above all else transfeminine. I don't want this to be a binary punk movement. I want this to be something for the nasty nonbinary punks that have had femininity define their identity in some powerful and violent ways. This is for nasty gruesome grrls who have had their femininity denied. For the mascs and femmes who deny feminitiy outright for their own sanity. This isn't a movement just for cis women and they/thems, and womxn. this is a movement for transfems, transmasc, nonbinary freaks, trans androgynous art hoes, messy drag queens, sexy hermaphrodites, hard kink trans sex workers, the absolute nastiest femmes and mascs and enbies with shitty attitudes. This is something for the types of weirdos that are never platformed in cis lesbian spaces let alone trans lesbian spaces. And of course theres the cops who want you homeless and crazy or begging for freedom till they snuff you out like a light.
