Happy Audio Drama Sunday! I heard so many good shows this week, let’s goooooo
🥃 I started listening to @breakerwhiskey this week, and I’m on episode 21 (which is nothing, it’s microfic), and it is so compelling. Lauren Shippen said in episode zero that she misses the improvisational feel of early audio dramas and that really comes through in this show—the wandering of the story reflects the wandering of Whiskey herself. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
🎵I am not alone in my reaction to the new season of @hellofromthehallowoods, which I think goes something like, “Wh—who—but—Arnold?????” (Seriously, Arnold???) but I love a mystery, and I love how linear this season is starting out. I’m sure that it’ll all get more complicated soon.
💔 Have you all heard Josie’s Lonely Hearts Club? It’s a call-in advice show from a fictional radio station and it is HILARIOUS. Until this last episode, which got SAD. It's a partially improvised show, so the whole thing feels so incredibly human and it always hits. Please listen, more fictional advice shows all around.
🐺 The Midnight Burger/The Amelia Project crossover was exactly as delightful as I expected. We got two shows that love historical figures and putting people in the deep freeze. What could go wrong! Absolutely nothing. With a crossover episode I always wonder if there will be enough character interaction to slake my insatiable character dynamic thirst and for this one I definitely think there was.
🍺 Inn Between dropped an episode of Dragon’s Rest on their feed this week, and I'm here to say that we did that because it's frikkin hilarious. This last episode was so good, especially with Shax trying to talk to a bartender and the bartender getting mad that Shax was complaining about her friends and not having a professional business conversation. I love you, southern-sounding bartender, and I love you Shax.
🩸Hemophobia continues to scare the heck out of me. This series, Camp Havenside, ended exactly how I expected it to, with the extra twist of that horrible half-possessed state Sam is in. Lordt. Listen to this show. Mind the content warnings. Then like, message me about it, it has taken permanent residence in my brain.
🎭 Oh Malevolent, you never disappoint me. I adore the twists the season finale took, and the real danger Arthur and John were in had me on the edge of my seat. How are we gonna get outta this one boys! Frikkin Kayne.
💎 As it ever is, @kingmakerpod was a blessing visited upon my podcatcher. Oh man though, Lucas Lando, what a scuzbag. Like maybe the worst villain yet in this series for me, and I'm including the psychic child. Lando's just unsavory. The action scenes in this episode were excellent, and I love the use of Pocket Cinnamon. For a minute when they were looking for things in the barn that don't conduct electricity, I was very worried for the cows. Honestly now a little surprised they didn't explode a cow. Hey guys, why didn't you explode a cow?
🌈 I've been listening to this actual play, @ourstoriedinsight, and it's about all the typical actual play stuff--a party of misfit adventurers, thrown together by circumstance, trying to stop the end of the world. What stands out about this one is its wonderful sound design and its tone--it's so introspective and kind. The characters are great too. I would die for Vishakapar. If you like an actual play and you don't want to wait for it to get really good, please check out Our Storied Insight.
As for personal news, boy oh boy am I working hard on the Dead! Pray for our recording schedule these next couple weeks. As for Inn Between, we'll be putting up an episode this week that is a true banger, I hope you like it.
That's it for me this week! If you like what I do, send me a tip!

Sam Claflin and Adaptations (there's a lot more than you think!)
Articles and interviews be like: Sam, you have done so many book adaptations and then name at most three titles. Every fucking time. Luckily, I'm here to tell you about them! (Under the cut as it got long.)
Hunger Games Catching Fire and Mockingjay (books written by Suzanne Collins) - YA dystopia. The most obvious, of course. Sam plays Finnick Odair, the coolest character. (He's not dead, Katniss is lying.)
Daisy Jones and the Six (book written by Taylor Jenkins Reid) - story of a rise and fall of fictional band in the 1970s. Sam is Billy Dunne, the main male lead and a real rockstar!
My Cousin Rachel (book written by Daphne du Maurier) - Gothic thriller, 19th century. Sam is the narrator, Philip. This is my personal favourite.
Their Finest - adaptation of Their Finest Hour and a Half (book written by Lissa Evans) - Drama with bits of comedy. Set during WW2 in the film industry. Sam plays screenwriter Buckley, a member of a film crew working on a film about Dunkirk evacuation. Also features a side character who is gay and is alive at the end. More people should watch this film, imo.
Enola Holmes (book written by Nancy Springer) - kiddie Sherlockian pastiche. Sam plays Mycroft Holmes, at least that's his character's name, but it's not the usual Mycroft; his version is dumbed-down and cartoon-villainised so that the eponymous teenage girlboss can have her story.
Adrift - adaptation of Red Sky in the Mourning (book written by Tami Oldham Ashcroft) - survival drama of a seafaring couple lost at sea after a hurricane. Sam is the main character's love interest, Richard.
Two mini series from Sam's early career (that I haven't watched so can't give you any info):
Pillars of the Earth (book written by Ken Follett) - TV mini series set in 12th century about building of a cathedral. This was Sam's very first role.
Any Human Heart (book written by William Boyd) - TV mini series, chronicles a life of a writer in 20th century. Sam plays the youngest version of the main character, Logan.
Adaptations of plays - it counts, okay?
Journey's End (play written by RC Sherriff) - WW1 war film, but not a regular one (there's no battles). Covers a week in the trenches in March 1918. Sam plays Captain Stanhope, an officer at the edge of nervous breakdown. One of his best performances, if not the very best.
Riot Club (play written by Laura Wade) - contemporary film about a posh elite club at Oxford. Sam's character, Alistair, is a spoiled brat, Draco Malfoy-like. (Not the good fanon version, the bad canon version.) Btw, this is no Dead Poet's Society, no dark academia - the titular club is based on Bullingdon Club (of which Boris Johnson was member). They book a table at restaurants, trash them and then hand the owners a cheque to compensate. You see now why we have all these problems...
You can make an argument for:
Snow White and the Huntsman - (folk tale recorded by Brothers Grimm). It's a darker retelling. Sam plays William, the prince charming of the story.
Snow White and the Red Shoes, (as above) an animated film, he voices a character named Merlin. No idea what this is as I haven't seen it.
Okay now I'm stretching it
Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides - adapted from a Disneyland ride. BUT the ride itself was inspired by legendary tales of pirates, among others the books of Emilio Salgari. So, not that crazy. Might be the weakest of the franchise, but Sam's storyline--he plays the missionary Philip--is what saves it, his romance with the mermaid is just the cutest!
So that's it. Thank you for reading and I hope you check some of these out.

“Luke has many scars on his body, some from burns he accidently inflicted on himself when still learning how to deal with his powers - others he doesn’t remember how he got. These scars are practically invisible unless contrasted by strong light thank to his accelerated healing.”
About
“Luke is probably the best person you'll ever meet - eleventh year student (created as a higher level of the education system, a phase within the study cycle that takes place after the end of the basic cycle (from the first to the seventh year), Gryffindor, Head Boy and potential pledge to the world's greatest superhero team, he's the kind of person anyone can agree is destined for success.
He's captain of the Gryffindor quidditch team, where he plays top scorer. And one of the many reasons why training sessions and try-outs for the team are always full.
Luke is considered the best captain Gryffindor has had in years due to his high regard for his own teammates and rival teams; he has the highest point’s tally of the decade.
As well as being regarded as the smartest Gryffindor eleventh grader and being an excellent Quidditch player, Luke is also extremely popular, both in the wizarding world and in the Muggle world, being used mainly to attract positive publicity for the school and for its main benefactor, Vought International. In other words, Luke is a "Golden Boy".
He is skilled in Charms, Transfiguration, Dueling, Crime Fighting, Defense Against the Dark Arts and Hero Combat.  He's not very good at Legilimency or Occlumency, however.
He is the son of a Muggle father and a witch mother.
Luke has a perfect record, having never had a detention in his eleven years of schooling - of course, it can be considered that few teachers are willing to leave the "Golden Boy" in detention, and those who are willing are easily convinced otherwise.
Despite everything, Luke isn't above using his regalia for his own benefit, whether it's a night out in Hogsmeade, borrowing passkeys to go to Muggle clubs in central London, or getting hold of recreational drugs (witch or Muggle).
The only thing the drugs can't stop, however, are the nightmares that keep plaguing his mind - and which are gradually getting worse. They are usually accompanied by auditory and visual hallucinations of his dead younger brother, Sam.
Over the last few months, many have noticed that Luke has been acting odd - he's been sleeping less, he's been more irritable, his pupils are always dilated due to excessive drug use and he has deep dark circles under his eyes, he's barely seen outside his dormitory and although he's not failing any subjects, he's hardly seen during classes.
At times when he seems to be doing well, however, he has been tired and slightly depressed.
But oh, well, it's nothing to worry about; after all, he's the "Golden Boy", what could possibly go wrong - right?”

And WHO exactly is Sam Smith?
Opinions will no doubt be divided when it comes to answering that particular question, I'm sure, and not all favourable either. From my iconoclastic viewpoint, as ever, I would say he, yes, HE has mastered the ability to infinitely crawl up his own backside and out again more successfully than anything Houdini could have achieved as an escapologist.
Why? Because Sam Smith in reality is nothing more than an illusion. A manufactured figure who would be an absolute nothing if it wasn't for the spotlight of television and a pawn in that particular game that sucks up to HIS own vanity. You see, years ago in order to become a 'celebrity' you'd have had to work your way up from the bottom of the ladder, touring the clubs night after night, building your following, and then getting noticed if you were lucky enough and proved your talent. Even though that still didn't guarantee any promise of real success to superstar level.
If you've never heard of a rock band called 'Dumpy's Rusty Nuts' then count this as your introduction to them. Not that I'm in any way an expert fan or anything, I'm simply aware of their existence and the fact they've been around a very long time and are hugely, and I mean hugely successful. They've built their fanbase from sheer hard work, trudging up and down motorways to venue after venue, night after night, and relentlessly pursuing their passion for playing to audiences that range from hundreds into stadium numbers supporting much bigger artists, and can quite rightly qualify for the title 'legendary'.
Sam Smith, on the other hand, is nothing more than a manufactured puppet of an industry that views him as a mere product of its own making, and to be honest, I feel sorry for HIM as much as I do for those who have bought into HIS brand of egotistical bullshit. Like so many acts before HIM, he's become a creation who serves a purpose until such time as HIS bubble bursts and the next potential to extensively hype turns up. Like the majority before him though, he's so far up HIS own rear end with ego that he believes HE is something HE isn't, and somehow God's gift to a music industry that quite frankly couldn't give a damn as long as they're making money out of HIM while it lasts, and so, consequently the entire entertainment industry will mollycoddle him, blow constant smoke up HIS backside by sycophantly telling HIM how wonderful HE is because they know HE'LL buy into their grovelling, doff capping, yes sir, no sir, three bags full, sir, have whatever you want that makes you happy, further ego-inflating bullshit as everything about him screams ME, ME, look at ME, and how wonderful 'I' believe 'I' AM!
Just how people don't see through this bullshit amazes me. Have we really, honestly, and actually turned into a nation of such sheeple that we've come to the stage where we simply and readily buy into such bullshit with eyes wide closed?
How is it that we are so, so easily led as to not think that everyone in the background of this Sam Smith phenomenon isn't in it for what they can get out of it? The manager who takes a cut, the agent, the record label, the publicist, the costume designer, the make-up artist, the accountant, the tour manager, the personal assistant etc, etc - and all rubbing their hands from the smell of potential lucre as long as HE remains flavour of the month.
Now, I'm not against anyone earning an honest living, and neither am I suggesting there is anything dishonest within the Sam Smith circle of business interests, I simply find this entire sycophantic industry that relies on having to manufacture talent in order to sustain itself quite false and putrifying, and yes, while I concede to the fact that Dumpy's Rusty Nuts will also have their outgoings in terms of fees to management and an agent, and probably others along the way of their career they are more celebrity than Sam Smith can ever hope to be without the ego and publicity machine that has hyped HIM to faux-stardom, and in some circles at least, will live to achieve more in their forty plus year career than HE can ever hope for.

But what if we wanna be your friend and just don’t know how to be? 😂 Hi! 🎶
Send me 🎶 and I'll assign you an album from my collection.
Oh man, then we're in the same boat. I have no idea how I make friends. It just happens. And I'm worried that you'll not like this album and it'll put you off. but it's a good album I promise. Kraftwerk's The Man Machine
Tumblr media
So when I saw you were in Josh's lane and Sammy was your cheat I knew my usual folk-y rock wouldn't do. Those are very Jake/Danny albums. I definitely could have found something but with Josh and Sammy???? You need something weird.
To be very clear, neither Sam nor Josh would appreciate this album. They would hate that it's an electric album. They wouldn't see the value in it. And I would fight them. This album is SO GOOD. I don't know a lot about Kraftwerk aside from the fact that they were some of the first to do electronic music. Maybe it's the gay man in me, but when I first listened to this album i couldn't help but imagine being in the club in '78 when this album dropped.
Despite not knowing a lot about the history of this album. it does have a funny story that I think helped me assign it to you. Most of my album collection is music that agrees with my father's taste the crunchy lyrical-guitar heavy rock. The punk-y stuff and the pop-y stuff is more similar to my mom's music taste.
I found this record when I was going though my parent's record collection, my baby sister took most of their really good stuff so I've got slim pickings but I never leave my parents house without at least one record. My mom accompanied me this time, and I was pulling out records and she was commenting "oh that's my sisters, I bet she has no idea I have it." Or "we got that with green stamps at the grocery story" and then I pulled this one out and was immediately enamored with the cover.
"this looks cool" I told my mom but she had no idea what it was. When we took it upstairs my father rolled his eyes and told me I wouldn't like it "some of the songs don't even have words" he said, as if he doesn't love 20 minute long guitar jam sessions. "it must be the Hat Lady's and your father stole it." my mother whispered, the "hat lady" being my father's ex-wife he hardly ever talks about.
Anyways, this is probably my father's ex-wives album but its so good, it's weird, but i think there is musical integrity in it, despite what Josh and Sam would probably say. we need music to dance to as much as we need music to rock to. You don't nessicarlly strike me as an electric dance type person BUT this could make a good background to some of your ranchyer stuff *wink emoji*

Ugh no, I dislike Marian bc she manipulated my friend Tam. She kept blocking then unblocking him, putting them in some kind of sick cat-and-mouse game. She always tried manipulating him away from me and Club, and her behavior was intolerable. Ik you're all for innocents getting manipulated, but I ain't dealing with it, dear.
3 notes
Honey what's so hard to understand that what was said was an OBVIOUS TYPO? That's why I paid no mind to it at first, BC I USED MY GODDAMN BRAINS! YOU WERE CLEARLY JUST USING IT AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO FURTHER HARASS CLUB! HE HID THE COMMENT BC YOU WERE FALSELY ACCUSING HIM OVER IT! Club isn't a groomer, and the people saying he is are either ableist trolls like you wanting a "good" excuse to harass someone, or they're misinformed people who were manipulated by said trolls. How many times will we have to explain it, smh. I would never support actual groomers (such as you lmao), but Club ISN"T ONE.
2 notes
Uhhh prettyyyy suree Loveless is the one stalking Club, lol. Wouldn't you be as paranoid as he was if you were getting endlessly slandered and harassed like that? Ugh. You do WAY worse to your enemies.
3 notes
Uh okay and you're just as bad as Sam. Only you're a whole group of people doing this shit. So in a way ig you're worse LMAO...also what happened wasn't Club or Tam's fault so quit making it up as it is.
3 notes
No Tam probably just wanted to defend their friend, why do you assume everything is Club's fault? I swear, one day they'll blame him for the birth of Hitler. And you know what's fucked up? Seeing Tam as nothing but a minion bc of his age. Oh and for the record, you DO lash out and attack them. All the damn time lmao. Do I even have to link the examples???
2 notes
Bro stop acting like Club's manipulating me when YOU'RE the ones clearly doing it! And just bc I'm a kid doesn't mean I can't say no! Saying children can't stand up for themselves is just wrong. But the reason I don't is bc I GENUINELY APPRECIATE AND CARE ABOUT CLUB! I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST HIM! And if you did think this was true, why did you harass me later on for "not saying no" then? Tsk tsk tsk. And he supports all minorities. But when he made those cute little pride flag drawings YOU MADE FUN OF HIM FOR IT!
2 notes
Sweetheart if you're so sorry for us then stop contributing to our harassers and also quit accusing us of being future pedophiles. Just ew. Be ashamed of yourself now 7-7
0 notes
Not all of the hub attacked me, it was probably only Sam. Tri has always been friendly towards me and the whole group shouldn't be blamed for this. Keep in mind this is a place where ANYONE and EVERYONE is allowed to talk! Both good and bad people! Bc unlike you, Tri's actually fair. And unlike this group, YOUR ENTIRE GROUP WANTS TO HARASS ME!
6 notes
"why do this? is it cuz he gives you crappily drawn art? Is it cuz he tells you stupid shit like 'happy april hurr de durr’ is it cuz he gives you points and core which is WORTHLESS in the grander scheme of things?" Nah it's bc he's our friend and ya'll just salty you don't have any real ones 7w7
"If you continue to ignore this then sorry we are not going to protect you anymore if you are that brainwashed by that shit stained loser Club." Sweetie please you saying you were EVER protecting me is just gross. Kindly fuck off, if you really want me to be safe <3 (Which btw you don't, you're just disgusting manipulators.)
7 notes
Smh I'm his friend, and listening to a friend's problems IS THE LEAST YOU CAN DO FOR THEM! Club was NEVER trying to harm me! I'm completely fine with being there for him! BC HE'S MY FUCKING FRIEND! Is this how you would react to a friend of yours if they asked if they could vent to you? Just pitiful. If you don't have the emotional energy to listen to someone at the moment, politely tell them so like a normal person jfc.
3 notes
The only reason why he felt the need to seek validation from his friends is BECAUSE OF YOUR GOD-AWFUL TREATMENT OF HIM! You think you can do all the things you did and expect him to still be in a good mental health-state and have good self-thoughts? You think you can gang up on him and tell him he's a terrible person and expect him to not be insecure, scared, self-conscious, OR ANY OF THAT? You need to grow up and learn that your actions HAVE FUCKING CONSEQUENCES, YOU GODDAMN SELFISH 6-YEAR-OLDS! But then again, you would never in your life care if you ever hurt a person, now would you?
Sighhhhh I think that's enough for now lol -w-
Bye, see you tomorrow evening, and sorry for this big one, hehe.
That’s alright. Some people like them have explaining to do, more than they ever can or will.
Regarding the eighth point, admittedly things have improved a lot ever since that was a problem. I can guarantee these days Sam is a non-issue, he may come around but would have his hands tied by better paradigms when he does.

What We Keep Secrets For: Part 1
Sam looked at her work phone and furrowed her brow. She knew there was a new signing that was going to be announced so she'd assume that her work for the day would have consisted of shooting and editing that but instead her boss was sending her out to the airport. At this point, it wouldn't have surprised her if it was actually an errand run and not work related.
Officially, her job title was associate social media manager. While Sam didn't choose what content was posted to the various social media accounts of FC Bayern München, she was responsible for creating and editing a large chunk of it. In the past, new singings for the club were only announced via the traditional press conference but recently, Thomas, her boss, had been wanting to mix things up.
After making sure she had her bag packed with all her camera equipment and an extra power bank for the work phone, she stood by the door and waited for the car service to arrive. If there was a bright side to having to travel, it was that she didn't have to coordinate it.
When the car pulled on to the tarmac, Sam resigned herself to knowing that she'd have no clue what was going on until Thomas actually told her. Pulling up behind a bright red Audi, the car parked and Sam thanked the driver before getting out. To her right, she saw a group of men standing in conversation before Thomas emerged.
"Great, you're here." Thomas half guided, half shoved her towards the rest of the group. "Get your phone out and start recording as soon as he deboards the plane. You'll be capturing as much of his first moments here as possible."
Sam wanted to ask who "he" was but she also knew the name would probably mean nothing to her. She didn't have long to linger on the thought as the jet soon appeared from the taxiway. Pulling out her phone, she set the camera to record as soon as the door opened. Soon, she watched four men leave the jet and she immediately knew which the new signing was.
Obviously her job included observing the players both in person and in various forms of media so she wasn't used to the presence of professional athletes. Still, Sam found herself impressed but the player making his way towards her. She could tell that he had an impressively solid build yet at the same time, he was jovial with everyone he came in contact with. While some players had tried to remain cool and unemotional during their signing day coverage, this man appeared thrilled to be here and it seemed genuine.
"Matthijs, this is Samira Klein, one of our social media editors." Thomas introduced her to the player who immediately held his hand out in greeting.
Sam had watched as he did the typical "bro hug" with everyone so she was slightly apprehensive that this substantial figure was going to do the same to her. She was pleasantly surprised when he simply squeezed her hand and looked her square in the eye. "Very nice to meet you."
The rest of the day was filled with moving from place to place, including a stop at the Isar, where Matthijs was asked to retrieve his new trikot from a bottle floated his way. There were photoshoots and silly little getting to know the player videos and medical tests, Sam being there to document all of it. When there finally seemed to be a pause, Matthijs came and sat down next to her.
"Was it Samira?"
"Yeah," She nodded, "Well, I prefer Sam."
"Ah," He nodded. Well, thanks for hanging out. It's been a long day."
"I'm sorry." Sam laughed to herself as she shook her head.
Matthijs looked back at her quizzically. "What are you apologizing for?"
"It's just," She shrugged. "I feel like I've spent the whole day following you around like this weird little shadow. It must be annoying."
He simply laughed. "Not at all. I'm used to the whole media aspect of things but when you look at it this way, how many different places have we gone today?"
"A lot." Sam paused, wondering where he was going with this. "It's been a long day so far."
"Right." Matthijs smiled broadly. "But, you have been the only consistent presence. You're like an old friend by now."
When Sam continued to look skeptical, he winked. "But, you're right it has been a long day. I was kinda hoping you'd do me one more favor."
"What might that be?" Raising an eyebrow, Sam was intrigued.
"So," He laced his fingers behind his head. "My friends are going to meet up with me in the States and then come back here with me once the team returns but right now, I'm all by myself. I was going to invite you to get some dinner with me."
Pressing her lips together, Sam smiled. "You're lucky I'm starving."
"Fantastic then." Matthijs bit his lower lip and held up one ring. "Slight problem-"
This time, Sam laughed. "You don't know where to eat, do you?"
With a disarming, child-like innocence, he responded by shaking his head.
"What hotel are you staying at right now?" Same tried not to laugh at him as he pulled out a slip of paper.
"Ah," He held the paper up. "The Mandarin Oriental."
Sam pulled a face and shook her head. "Yeah, I don't know about you, but I don't really feel like having to dress up just to eat food tonight."
"Good point." He nodded solemnly. "And I have no idea where my luggage is right now anyway."
As soon as the words were spoken, Matthijs could no longer keep a straight face.
Sam smirked, thinking to herself how easy Matthijs was to be around. "There's an excellent pizza place that's close to the Mandarin Oriental. Does that work?"
"Well, I'm kinda at your mercy here, aren't I?" Again, he beamed a smile at her and Sam could only shake her head.
"Ok," She continued to laugh. "I'll have the car service take us back to my place and then I'll drive us there."
The car pulled up to Sam's apartment and she stowed her gear in the hatch of her Volkswagen GTI indicating that Matthijs should get in the passenger side.
Sam wanted to laugh at the face Matthijs pulled as he tried to fold his legs into the "You can move the seat back, you know."
"So I won't be messing the position up for your boyfriend then?" Matthijs looked straight ahead, avoiding Sam's line of vision as he adjusted the seat.
She tired to hide her scoff as she shook her head. "No need to worry about that."
Matthijs let out a little sound of surprise but left it at that. Sam decided to have a little fun while they were on the subject. "What about you? Isn't your girlfriend going to be joining you here?"
"Eh," He shrugged. "She broke up with me when I moved to Italy two years ago."
Sam immediately frowned. "Oh. Sorry."
Matthijs looked over at her, raising the corner of his mouth in not exactly a smile or a smirk. "I've had enough time to work through it."
"Oh!" Sam called out in excitement as she found a parking spot right down the street from the restaurant.
As soon as they were seated, she ordered two Aperol spritzes and a Caprese pizza for them, prompting Matthijs to laugh again. "I do like a woman who knows what she wants."
They got settled and a somewhat easy silence developed but Sam was noticing that she felt slightly off kilter around him. "So, um, sorry but I don't follow football much."
Matthijs looked back at her quizzically. "Why are you apologizing for that?"
"I dunno." Sam shrugged as she took a sip. "I was out at a club once and a guy bought me a drink and was then offended that I didn't know who he was."
"Well, you know that I do. Did you agree to dinner because of my job?"
Sam instantly shook her head. "No. I've watched you all day do some pretty silly things like stand in the river or holding up a pretzel as apron and you did everything with this huge smile on your face. Never once did you act like you had better things to be doing or that you were annoyed at having cameras in you face the whole day. You seem like a very nice guy and I don't like the thought of you being lonely."
"Ok." He tilted his head and took a sip. "So then don't think of me as my job. Think of me as, you know, me."
Sam pressed her lips together and nodded. "I can do that."
He smiled back at her. "Good. Now, what about you, Sam not Samira?"
"What about me?" She let out a little nervous laugh, not one to enjoy the scrutiny no matter how benign.
Their pizza was placed on the table along with plates and silverware. They both waited as the server placed a slice in front of each of them.
"You're the media person." He took a bite, deliberately drawing out his question. "Was that your ultimate goal or is that a stop on the way to something else?"
Sam paused. He really seemed like a nice guy but she didn't feel like delving into her whole life when she'd probably never see him again. "I didn't seek this job out, it kind of fell into my lap."
Matthijs continued to eat his pizza and Sam realized he was waiting for her to finish answering his question. "It's kinda weird, photography is what I really enjoy. I've thought about how to make a career out of it but aside from something like photojournalism or like, portraits, I don't know how to make that feasible. I'm actually a trained archivist, I went to school for that, but there are so, so few openings in the field tat I can't even get my foot in the door for an interview."
She found herself inexplicably irritated. "I guess it's not like with football where you figure out that you're pretty good as a kid and then just works towards a professional career."
Scrunching his mouth, Matthijs shrugged. "Maybe. But at the same time, most other careers you can continue on with. I'll be finished by mid to late thirties and then I'll need to figure out something else to do."
"I didn't mean to imply that you had it easy or whatever."
"No, I know." He interrupted. "And, it's easy for me to say just go for your dream job as if there aren't possible financial repercussions. It's one of those grass is greener situations."
Sam found herself searching his face. "How old are you?"
"I'll be 23 next month." He smiled again. "Why?"
She gestured vaguely. "You have a youthful face, like you look young but you have a wise beyond your years type thing going on."
When Matthijs raised an eyebrow, she felt prompted to continue. "That's a compliment, by the way."
"Good." He allowed himself to laugh. "That's how I took it. But since we're there, how old are you?"
Despite her best efforts, Sam felt her cheeks flush. "I turned 22 last week."
"Happy birthday, then." Matthijs smirked.
Offering a smile, a silent thank you, Sam decided to steer the conversation back towards him. "Are you going to join up with the rest of the team in the States?"
"I leave first thing in the morning, another reason I'm grateful for this little bit of normalcy." He beamed a smiled towards her. "Are they sending you too?"
Still chewing, Sam shook her head. "No, I stayed here and the crew that's over there already has been sending me things to put out."
"Oh," Matthijs caught himself before he actually frowned.
Sam gave a half-hearted shrug. "Apparently it's already pretty crowded with the current crew. You'll have to keep me updated on how it goes meeting the rest of the team."
After Matthijs insisted on paying the bill, Sam drove him to the hotel. They sat out front for a moment before Matthijs turned to her and smiled. "Really, thank you for dinner. I appreciate the company."
Sam had just put the key in her apartment door when she felt her phone vibrate.
You home? Can I come over?

DVD commentary ask for neon rain please! (can’t fit the whole scene but jon’s scheme with sam and how he proves they’re soulmates)
“Sure-“ Sansa told him absently, pulling one of the holoscreens over and groaning as she saw the data flickering, “Arya- are you working with some kind of dampener again?” It would be just their luck that a stray dampener in the shop would inhibit her access to the central system just when she needed it.“What are you talking about?” Arya asked, her head popping up from under the car she was working on. Her short hair was in two high, spiky pigtails, and swished around as she turned to look at Sansa in confusion.“Oh- that may be me.” Sam said, looking rather embarrassed and patting his jacket. “Oh- I’m sorry- I keep one with me when I’m working with patients to keep the recorders from picking up confidential information, and I must have forgotten to leave it in the office.”“No problem.” Sansa smiled at him, relieved that she wouldn’t have to go and hunt down the source of the problem later. “We can easily go old school- my dad always liked having the option, so I can write one for you”
Ooooh this is a fun one! SO sorry it's getting answered so late- I'm a disaster.
This is kind of a big mistake on Sansa's part, here. She knows she met her soulmate, that he's looking for her (either because he wants a relationship or wants to put her in prison for grand theft) and that her handwriting could give her away. And yet, she gives it to Sam without any suspicion. It's partially justified, in that it would be really unusual for someone as wealthy as Jon's family to show up at a shop on the lower levels, but it's mostly a case of Sansa drastically misjudging who Jon is. She doesn't really know anything about him and assumes that he's just another rich club kid with more money than brains. She also really hasn't let herself process the idea of having a soulmate yet, and I don't think has really grasped the extent that Jon is willing to go to in order to find her. She hasn't looked into him the way her siblings have- she's afraid he's just going to be another Joffrey.
And then Sam stumbles into their shop, trips over like, three different things, and , because of that, immediately endears himself to both Stark girls. He's probably giving off slightly nervous energy that both Sansa and Arya attribute to just being a mid-level kid nervous to be down on the lower levels. He's definitely not as smooth as Jon would want, but they don't really suspect anything because he doesn't really read 'skylight kid' to either of the girls and their guard is down.
Sam, as one of Jon's closest friends, of course, is the only person who knows the actual story behind how Jon met his soulmate. Sam probably thinks Jon's being a bit dense, doing all of this reconnaissance work instead of just talking to her (for god's sake), but he and Jon have been ride or die for each other since high school and so he agrees to the plan. (I think the hoverboard is actually intended to be a gift for Rhae, so once Jon figured out where the Stark shop was, he needled Sam into taking it). Their plan also, unknowingly, plays into Sansa's nostalgia- Ned liked having physical copies of things, and she's genuinely glad to write the invoice out for him when the issue of his medical dampener (it seems like doctors in this verse would HAVE to have something like this for privacy, given all the tech).
I think Robb might have picked up on how writing the invoice (and giving this guy they had just met a handwriting sample) was a bad idea more quickly than Sansa or Arya- he's the strategist/mastermind behind most of their heists, and is wildly protective of his siblings. The girls aren't nearly as paranoid, especially given how nice Sam seems, and given that Sansa's got two jobs (plus heists) and Arya's doing an apprenticeship in addition to working at the shop (and heists also), they've both probably been sleep deprived for like, five years.
Sam, bless him, expected WAY more resistance to the idea of giving a handwriting sample. He's absolutely baffled when Sansa offers to give him one of her own volition, but is probably glad for it, because she seems nice and he still thinks that Jon is a dumbass for not just like, talking to her. Of course, as soon as Jon confirms that it's Sansa's handwriting (he's probably sitting a few blocks over and trying to be inconspicuous but is too broody to pull it off), he wants to go right in and do The Reveal. He's smart enough to come up with this whole verification scheme, but impatient enough about wanting to meet Sansa that he's metaphorically already picking out wedding colors. The boy has some emotional baggage around the idea of soulmates- we'll get into it eventually. Basically, he really wants to get to know Sansa, and he's intelligent, but impatient).
Thanks so much for the ask!! This was fun (if very late- I am so sorry) and I hope it was what you were hoping for!

What’s ur favorite scene for each of the glee chs you love?
hi anon! i love this ask! i answered something similar a while back here if u want more detail!
my favorite characters are kurt, blaine, mercedes, quinn, sam, santana, and finn so:
kurt: i have so many for kurt tbh, but i think the one that really stands out to me is the hallway scene in 2x20, after he's announced prom queen. it's such a cruel thing for the kids to have done to him, and he's so upset, but i love that it slowly turns into him refusing to allow that hatred to give him a lump in his throat. him deciding to go back and get coronated, especially after he'd just come back to mckinley really hits hard and is such a beautiful display of kurt's strength over the past season.
blaine: pretty much all of 4x07, but specifically, blaine deciding not to rejoin the warblers. that was such a striking moment for him, deciding to break his pattern of running when he got scared/things got hard, and choosing to face what he did head on. it wasn't the easy choice, but it was the one that was better for him in the end, and i just remember watching and being so proud of blaine's courage in that moment.
mercedes: the scene in 4x21, before higher ground, where she tells everyone that she doesn't have a record deal because she refused to compromise on her image to market it. i've talked about this a bit before, but mercedes' arc of refusing to make herself smaller or into something she isn't is so, so important to me, as a woc. it means so much to see her be true to herself and refuse to give that up no matter what. she owns exactly who she is and that is so beautiful to me.
quinn: the scene after never can say goodbye in 3x11, where she tells everyone she got into yale. it always makes me cry. it's a moment where i'm so, so proud of her and her development. she went through so much during high school, and it’s so emotional for me, watching her say that you can let go of the past and start your future, because that’s what she struggled with for so long.
sam: the scene in 6x13, where he gives his first glee club lesson about country music. that is the most beautiful way to conclude sam’s arc on the show, and made me so happy when i first watched it. that felt like a return of my favorite version of sam. it’s so true to his story and his family and where he came from, and signified really well where he was going to go with glee club as their coach.
santana: again, so many come to mind here, but i think i’d have to say the scene in 5x18, where we get the quote about wanting to use her bitch powers to protect the people she cares about. that’s like..... the thesis of santana’s character for me, and i’m really, really glad we got to hear her say that. it feels like the culmination of five seasons of development for her, and it’s probably my favorite santana quote.
finn: i was going back and forth about which finn scene for a while, and i think i have to go with him offering unique rizzo. it’s such a beautiful way to showcase finn’s development as a person, and how far he’s come since s1. his character started off not understanding a lot, and not dealing with those misunderstandings well, and to see him go from that to....being the first person to affirm unique’s identity and give her something so concrete and symbolic of that, in getting to play rizzo, was just.....so emotional for me. i adore it.

Another football rant
Why why the fuck are men and only men to quick to argue that mens and womens football soccer isn't equal like what the actual fuck
Because I actually had to explain to a man that yes, the women's game exists and contrary to his opinion most of the all time record holding players, are women
Like all time international goal scorer Christine Sinclair of Canada with 62 more goals than Ronaldo at 190 int goals
All time most capped player not Ronaldo It's K Lily with 354 int caps to Ronaldo's 205
Most Euro Club Championship wins tied between Wendie Renard and Eugénie Le Sommer with 8 yes 8 Women's Championship titles each the guy who's won the most who's name I can't remember has 6 titles
Fun fact I can't remember if it's caps or goals but Ronaldo only ranks ties 7th with a German player whose last name is Prinz I actually wrote the actual thing in another rant so if you want to know, read my other rants to figure out which one
And I'm pretty sure that the all time that's both mens and womens world cup goal scorer is Marta might want to check but I know she's the all time scorer in the womens world cup.
Also yeah like men are also like really likely to be whiny bitches when a woman wins an award over a man, just because he's like a man
Great example of this is when Mary Earps won the 2023 spoty award like in 2023 Mearps won two golden gloves like 2 minor international tournaments second place at that years world cup which she both won the Golden Glove and set records in an mbe a FIFA Best gk FIFA 11 and England player of the year and a whole other tonne of awards And yet some people Pierce Morgan and his disciples still thought she shouldn't have won that years spoty I personally think they're all jealous because Mearps is amazing because they're also jealous because that's the second time in two years that a Lioness has won the award
Another thing why is it men and only men that say it's not equal that is meant to be sarcastic so like put quotations around it for a win in women's and men's football earlier I had to read that apparently Sam Kerr the entire Tillies squad and Kristie Mewis aren't better than one slightly below average man U player just because the dipshit that said it is a sexist homophobic dipshit who believes that lesbians are worse at soccer when anyone that knows knows that the real goats of soccer are the lesbian icons of Marta Putteas Kerr Sinclair and Miedema both the singular and couple moving back on track how is one guy better than a team that has players at the best clubs in the world Real Madrid Chelsea man c Arsenal Olympic Lyonnais Paris Saint Germain, Wave fc just to name a few. And also one of the best current US midfielders in K Mewis as well like what deluded world do you live in mate
Anyway I am so drunk right now so like because this is speech to text I am gonna post this now and come back and edit it later and because I know me with my adhd could be a fuck load of time

Found another French press and I’m slowly getting some semblance of normal mornings back, which I’ve missed. I set Howl’s Moving Castle down on the counter, pages-down, so while I wait for the water to boil, and while I let the coffee steep, I can get another chapter in. Leaving the book on the counter like that makes me pick it up when I’m waiting for things to boil. Lots of instant ramen and linguine with scratch-made red sauce to power through lately.
“What a very elegant way of making coffee!” I remember a Radiologist telling me when I explained what a French press was. The kettle begins to whine, stopping me mid-sentence in the book about Sofie’s boldness as an old woman. I pour the kettled water over the grounds in the press and shuffle around for a spoon.
“Damn. I need to stop wasting spoons like this”, as I root around for the last spoon, quickly stir in my coffee, and rinse it off to set it aside for my cereal. “Huh, four minutes, that’s shorter than I originally thought”, the instructions say. I’d usually let the coffee sit for ten. “Well, it’s not like I won’t taste the difference” I chuckle to myself, sparking up a reason why I even crave mornings like these in the first place. Immediate mental damage shaken off.
A silence fills the apartment.
I still can’t tell if I like these kinds of silences or not. The first time it happened was when I had gotten on the phone with many friends that day offering their support I always shrink away from.
"Come over, we'll cry and watch movies."
"Drive up here and stay the night, we'll play board games!"
"This is last minute, but come to my bachelor party at my house!"
After the last friend hanging on the phone said “I just got into work, call you tomorrow?” and hung up, it was there for the first time. I stared down a half-empty apartment. You know the silence, when you’re alone and have been crying over something permanent but your body has just decided it’s over doing that mechanism. You’ve taken that last hiccupped breath, wiped your last tear, and blown your nose for the last time. That silence. What the fuck IS that silence? It’s happened more than once, too.
For a person who remembers hating silences off all kind, trying to fill a room with a record, or just powering through the stigma of making full-blown conversations with themselves. I learned to hate that inner voice. He was so jaded, so negative, so matter-of-fact. He was as sharp as a tack though. He would shield me from disappointment because worse-case scenario; I always knew it would end this way. Best case? I'm pleasantly surprised. It was never a silent moment with you, though. Anything to shut him up.
“No way we have the same exact music tastes!”
“Why do they call him Sterling and not just Archer?”
“If you were a bee what bee would you be?”
I was slingshot back to the reality of my current situation.
Chapter Six: In Where Howl Expresses His Feelings With Green Slime. Setting the book back pages-down, (listen, you'll be FINE it wont LIVE like that, besides-- you don't even want to know what happened to my copy of Catch-22), I root around for a mug, as if I'm not already going for my black and white "Eat the Rich" mug you got me two birthdays ago that I haven't washed since. I take my coffee black, and it's MY mug don't you dare fuckin' judge me! (by the way:
Yes that new Two Door Cinema club record is great, Sam crushes those guitar riffs.
It's a play on 007 where other characters call him Bond and not James.
A busy buzzy bee.)
My whirlwind of a roommate, went off to work after a night of debate of whether or not we need to go to a hospital. It's not that I didn't believe them of their sharp rib pain, it's just not enough to quantify an emergency and we would be stuck in the ER for hours only to be potentially told "we don't know what's wrong, here's some pain killers you can't afford, and off you go!" I don't even know who to be angriest at in this scenario, but I'll always kick myself first. Damn me and not being at the Doctor level yet. Damn me and being smart enough to know that I'm not smart enough to give a definitive answer on what ails them. FUCK me for being unwilling to feel their pain because if I give more empathy it'll complicate their feelings towards me, since admitting they had a crush on me the day before. I really don't need that on my plate right now.
There it is again. That damned silence.
Recovering again from those mental blows to myself, I reflexively go to the fridge to aim for that hazelnut creamer that you liked. Laughing to myself "having a coffee addiction but can't take it black." I touch my temple now from that psychic pain.
"Why do you snowball like this?" I say to myself soon after, switching gears to reach for my own milk for cereal, only to ultimately decide against it and close the door. I take the green book, set my mug on the coffee table and lay myself down on the couch with my left leg hanging over the edge. I look over the top of the book to the same perspective where you'd work and I'd read in absolute silence.
I learned to be welcoming of my own thoughts through the quiet times. I'm still the extrovert and needs to fill the air with noise. I used to make noise to shut up that angrier, self-loathing, inner bastard. This chapter of life though, having nothing going on, and no one to talk to made moments OF talking to friends all the sweeter. You showed me that.
I was emotionally damaged when we met so I remember often, looking up and choking on my own words for fear of letting you know more about me. I just got used to not saying anything when we hung out. I was busy being in my own head though.
I would make myself uncomfortable because I felt guilty that I was just in my head and not actually present with you. I KNOW you were okay with that, more than okay, you loved me more for it-- I just wasn't. The more and more these thoughts cycled in my head the more resentment I grew. At myself. It festered horridly. You ran around cleaning or cooking or working on your art, and I would check in "Need me to do something?" I didn't ask because I genuinely wanted to help I asked because I felt the guilt of being just inside my own head and paying you no mind. Secretly kind of liking it.
I didn't lie about loving you--it just made anything that you did that bothered me all the worse. All relationships have speed bumps, my spiraling made them mountains. Is this how you felt, in those pictures where you're deep in thought and you didn't say anything until the idea of me got away from you and what reality me would actually say? Yes, of course I don't have to move in with you! I know it's too early, but opportunities like this are weird like that in relationships, why have you been holding that in this whole time? You know you can talk to be about anything when it happens? You know with me there's always a compromise, right? You know it's not healthy to be hung up on an ex, right? Do I actually love you, or is it that "idea-of love" trope? Did I actually give in to "the best way to get over somebody is to get under somebody" subconsciously? Did I give in to that initial terrible thought when we started dating that you were just a rebound? Sorry I'm freaking out about moving in with you, but it's too soon, yeah? Uh oh, I've had a dream about this, where we are dating but I'm not happy being with you, it's not coming true, is it?! Am I admitting I actually don't see a future with you? Am I subconsciously looking for the next person and refuse to give up what I have and let that jerk voice win? Did I just find someone else? Did I lose a different opportunity because I couldn't get it together fast enough? Again? Why am I like this? Would you have actually done those awful things if my situation was different? You know if you stopped trying to appease everybody you wouldn't be in this mess right? Do you like the drama secretly? Did you invite that chaos because you're bored? You're just a womanizer just like every other guy, aren't you? You try to go against that in every way but you're no different when push comes to shove, right? What could have done different with--?
"Just give me a second to breathe!"
I catch up to my runaway daydream.
That silence returns.
"Shit." I stare at my empty cup of coffee, which usually meant I would have to start the French Press Process all over again, but I always fill the press with water so there's two cups. Whether or not it's a leftover habit is unimportant, anyway. I shuffle over to the kitchen and fill my mug again. I turn my back, mug in hand and lean on the counter. The cold coffee touching my lips.
"Yeah, I've missed mornings like these."

It's been a summer of change at Leeds United. After leading the club to relegation, Andrea Radrizzani's priority was to purchase Sampdoria and sell Leeds to 49ers Enterprises. It took them until 9th June to reach an agreement, and then another five weeks for the EFL to approve the takeover. On 17th July the club finally issued the following statement…. Today, Leeds United Football Club can announce that the EFL has approved the sale of the Club to 49ers Enterprises, paving the way for the immediate transition of ownership.
Paraag Marathe, previously Vice Chairman and Board member of the Club, will take over as Leeds United Chairman. In this role, Marathe will oversee all aspects of the Club, including football and business operations, and drive the strategy to fight for promotion back to the Premier League in the 2023-2024 season. Marathe takes over from Andrea Radrizzani, who has been majority owner of Leeds United since 2017. Angus Kinnear, CEO of Leeds United and Board member, will remain in his current position, and continue to direct the Club’s day-to-day operations. Rudy Cline-Thomas, Founder and Managing Partner of MASTRY, will join the Board as Co-Owner and Vice Chairman of the Club.
“This is an important moment for Leeds United and we are already hard at work,” said Marathe. “This transition is a necessary reset to chart a new course for the Club. We have already appointed a highly-respected First Team Manager with a track record of success, and we are confident Leeds will field a competitive squad to contend for promotion next season. It’s a privilege to carry this torch as I know we have a responsibility to ensure this Club makes our staff, players, supporters, and the Leeds and Yorkshire communities proud."
Cline-Thomas added, "With my family hailing from Leeds, it's an honour to be able to uplift this incredible community. This is more than just an opportunity, it's a personal mission. The chance to reinvigorate the cherished Leeds culture, to create a platform that attracts the world's finest players, and build a truly global brand that celebrates diversity, is a prospect that thrills me.”
49ers Enterprises, led by Marathe and 49ers CEO Jed York, has steadily supported and increased its investment in Leeds United over the past five years. Moving forward, the group will look to enhance all aspects of the Club both on and off the pitch. Marathe, Kinnear, and the Club recently announced the appointment of Daniel Farke as First Team Manager. The Club's leadership has also been laying the groundwork to build a successful squad by retaining key players from last season’s team as well as bringing in new talent.
“49ers Enterprises is bringing fresh leadership, management, and a commitment to investment, which I’m confident will meet our ambition to compete for promotion and remain in the top flight as an established Premier League Club,” said Kinnear. “I know Paraag, Rudy and 49ers Enterprises will keep supporters central to their plans during their custodianship and I am excited to work in realising the true potential of this great club.”
Radrizzani said, “It has been an honour to guide Leeds United over the last six years and to spend so much time with the best fanbase in the world. 49ers Enterprises have been fantastic partners for years and I'm confident they will take Leeds to the next level.” In the meantime, the exodus of players began…. Adam Forshaw and Joel Robles were not offered new contracts, Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo were sold for a total of £4M, and Rasmus Kristensen, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Max Wober, Marc Roca, and Brenden Aaronson were loaned out. On the plus side, Daniel Farke was hired as our new manager, and returning loanees Joe Gelhardt, Dan James, Ian Poveda, Jamie Shackleton, Lewis Bate, Charlie Cresswell and Cody Drameh all got some minutes in our pre-season friendlies. We also signed goalkeeper Karl Darlow, defensive midfielder Ethan Ampadu and re-signed defender Sam Byram. However, after so many departures (and the likelihood that more players will leave before the transfer window closes), plus Patrick Bamford, Mateo Joseph, Giorginio Rutter, Sam Greenwood, Jack Harrison, Stuart Dallas, Tyler Adams, Junior Firpo and Cody Drameh all being unavailable for our first game of the season due to injury, the squad looks like it's well short of what is needed to challenge for promotion….

Crackcember: Day 4
Epic driving times with the boys because they simply would not shut up this chapter!
Content warnings: light head injury, reckless driving and crash mention, pet whump mention/implication (just used as a joke though)
————————————
Previous
Hilbert’s ankles banged against a couple of stairs as they stepped up to the front of the RV, settling into the passenger seat with one final shove.
Dennis fastened his own seatbelt and didn’t bother to help Hilbert. He focused instead on slipping the key into the ignition, finally starting the vehicle on the third twist, and pulling out of the driveway.
“Dennis, I don’t have my seatbelt yet, hold on-!” Hilbert protested and Dennis stepped on the gas, sending them flying down the street.
“We’re wasting daylight! No sense in waiting,” he shrugged, skidding around a left turn and flinging Hilbert into the door.
“Yes, but the speed limit sign says twenty-five miles per hour,” he grumbled, sitting back up with a wince, “and you’re- you’re going-” he cut himself off, jaw going slack. “Where the hell is your speedometer?!”
“What’s that?” Dennis asked innocently, throwing them into another too-tight left turn. The thunk of Hilbert’s head against the window and subsequent groan of pain was incredibly satisfying.
“You- agh!- you can’t seriously tell me you don’t know what that is.”
“I can tell you anything I like.”
“I don’t have to believe it,” Hilbert grumbled, eyes scanning back over the dashboard.
“I could always make you if you’re gonna be like that,” Dennis rolled his eyes.
“You literally can’t! I- there’s duct tape on the dash. You actually covered the speedometer with duct tape. What is it with you and duct tape?!”
“Handy dandy tool, solves all your problems!” The madman embodied an infomercial, rosy cheeked smile and all.
“Knowing how fast you’re driving is not a fucking problem!”
“Excuse you, taking your eyes off the road is a major health risk. Distractions cause accidents, and that pointer going up and down definitely qualifies as such, so I solved the problem! Didn’t you pay any attention in Driver’s Ed?”
“You’re the one who should be answering that question,” Hilbert scoffed, sinking back into his seat. Dennis obviously wasn’t in the mood to give a reasonable answer anyway, so he switched topics. “Where are we going anyway?”
“Shopping, obviously. Food, drink, entertainment… we’ve gotta stock up for our big trip!”
“And… after that?” He reminded himself he’d be out of there long before that would even matter, but his curiosity was too strong to resist asking anyway.
“Wherever the road takes us,” Dennis answered simply, making one final abrupt left turn up a steep incline into a shopping center. He whirled into a parking spot and slammed on the brakes. The sudden stop nearly sent Hilbert headfirst through the windshield, but his whiteknuckled grip on the seat saved him.
Dizzily, he glanced at all their surroundings and realized he’d been here many times before. It was quite the odd choice for a food shopping trip though, considering the only thing that could be considered a grocery store was… completely out of the question.
“Uhh, Dennis, where are we even going?” “I told you. Wherever the wind-”
“No, dipshit, here. Where are we gonna pick up those snacks you promised? Are you planning on grabbing something tasty from Petco?”
“Suddenly got a hankering for some kibble, Hilbert?” Dennis burst into laughter, “Or, ooh, you got a collar in mind? If that’s where you wanna take this I’m all for experimentation!”
“No,” Hilbert felt faint at the mere suggestion.
“That’s what I thought. Nah, we’re going to the superior -co store.”
“...Taco bell?”
“Costco!!” Dennis threw his hands in the air, and Hilbert flinched just hearing the name. He felt his breathing pick up and his hands start to tremble.
“You can’t- you can’t be serious,” he stammered, wide eyes looking for any sign that his captor was lying, playing this as a joke before they drove somewhere else.
“Oh come on, you can’t seriously tell me you’ve got something against Costco. Everybody loves Costco,” Dennis insisted.
“I- sure, but I don’t even have a Costco membership! I won’t be able to get in there!” Dennis wordlessly flashed his own membership card. “Okay, well, I’m… I just can’t go,” Hilbert sighed, curling in on himself.
“Awful try. Let’s get you out of there now.” Dennis flicked out a pocket knife and sawed through the duct tape around his ankles. He ripped it off, muffling the resulting shout with a quick hand over Hilbert’s mouth, then trailed the knife up his leg, careful not to nick the bare skin, and started on the tape around his wrists.
“What if I try to run away, huh?” Hilbert blurted out. “You won’t be able to stop me in a public store like that. So- so you shouldn’t take me in. Just leave me out here. Then I won’t- I can’t ruin your shopping experience.”
“Mmh, you seem awful desperate to avoid this. Surely you wouldn’t happen to be a member of some other bulk store…?”
Hilbert couldn’t cover his guilty reaction quickly enough. The moment he saw Dennis’s face light up, he knew he’d lost the battle.
“Fine. I’m... a Sam’s Club member.” He cringed, waiting for the reaction. The grating laughter wasn’t a surprise, but it still hurt.
“Pfff, that’s the silliest thing you’ve said yet! Your name isn’t even Sam!”
“That has literally no bearing on this. I am a loyal member of a store I trust so I-”
“Shut it with that hogwash. We’re going to have a lovely time shopping at Costco,” Dennis smiled, leaning over the seat and pressing his knife against Hilbert’s neck in an obvious threat, “and you don’t have a choice in the matter.”

Gimme Shelter - 6
Tumblr media
Sorry, it took me a while to write the next chapter but I was kinda busy. I hope you still want to know how things are going and growing between Henry and Kat. If you like this, please reward me with a comment, reblog or like 💜
Pairing: Henry Cavill x OFC (Kat Spencer)
Words: ~3.0k
Summary: Henry has to deal with a personal crisis and he finds shelter with his old rugby mate Sam and his sister Kat. She used to be Henry’s best friend a very long time ago. Will they be able to become friends again or maybe even more? Chapter 6: A disruptive factor and The Lonely Hearts Club meets again.
You can find the previous chapters and my other fics on my masterlist!
Warnings: RPF, mention of mental health issues, lots of poetry
Unbeta'ed. English isn't my first language. Mistakes ahead and they're all mine.
Disclaimer: I don’t know the real Henry Cavill or anyone who's related to him in any way, this is pure fiction and nothing more
Credits: Pics for the moodboard from Pinterest. Face claims: Kat = Jennifer Connelly
Taglist (let me know if you want to be added or removed):

So, enough of the small print...here we go:
**********
As much as Kat enjoyed her time with Henry and the feelings that blossomed between them there was this one disruptive factor called Mel.
When they were sitting on that rock the other day, almost kissing, when they were pouring their hearts out afterwards, it all felt so real, so possible, so tangible but whenever she saw Hen talk to Mel her heart sank and doubt started to nag at her hope. And he not only talked to Mel, he went to her place several times and so Kat went to London for contract negotiations with a publishing house with mixed feelings.
She wanted to trust Henry who always laughed it off, when Kat asked him about Mel, saying they were just having a neighbourly chat, but she also wasn't willing to be heading for the rocks blindly. She wasn't able to ignore the existence of Mel and the connection between her and the man Kat had fallen for again.
She missed Henry terribly when she was away though. Five days without him made her realize how close they had grown and how much she enjoyed being around him. Five lonely nights in a hotel bed increased her doubts and her worries, her jealousy and her insecurities. She couldn't stop her mind from creating worst case scenarios of Hen being with Mel. Of Mel seducing him, of Henry having sex with her, falling for the attractive, charming blonde who knew how to enchant a man. She imagined how he got trapped by this woman who'd never tried to hide that she was looking for a new husband, a new provider, after the last one had the audacity to die and leave her with a big, beautiful mansion but not with the amount of money Mel had hoped for. And in all these scenarios Kat was the one who was left behind with a broken heart. Again.
When she returned to St. Ives on Saturday afternoon she found Lydia working in the garden and Sam in the kitchen, baking bread. Her brother hugged her, leaving handprints of flour on her black shirt.
"How was London?"
Kat plopped down on a chair with a sigh. "Successful but exhausting. I can't believe that I actually liked living there. The traffic is horrible and all those people and the noise…"
"Good thing you're back in our beautiful, little sanctuary then. We've missed you. Even Darcy came looking for you every day." Sam shoved the loaf of bread he'd just moulded into the oven before he washed his hands and sat down at the table across from his younger sister.
"Really?" An amused smile played on Kat's lips. "And I thought Henry and Kal are all he cares about recently. How's Hen by the way? On the phone he said he's fine?"
"He is, I guess. No more panic attacks as far as I know. He's been in a pretty good mood all week, busy and full of energy."
Sam poured himself a glass of water and offered one to Kat too but she declined with a shake of her head.
"Where is he anyway?"
"At Mel's."
Kat's expression changed from curious to annoyed in an instant. "Again? What's he doing there?"
"Having a coffee and a chat, I guess," Sam shrugged. "I don't know the details."
Kat rolled her eyes. "Of course not."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing."
"Then why do you say it?"
Kat looked at Sam with a frown. "Nevermind."
"No, come on. Spill it. Are you implying I know something I won't tell you?" Sam got a little cross now.
"I'm not implying anything. I just don't understand why he spends so much time at her place and I can hardly believe your old rugby mate hasn't told you." She crossed her arms and gave her brother an expectant look.
"He told me what I've just told you. What do you think they're doing? Having a secret affair?" He let out a snort, laughing just at the thought of Hen and Mel but when he saw the frown on Kat's face it dawned on him. "Wait? That's what you're thinking? That something's going on between them? You're jealous?"
"Does that sound so far-fetched? She tries to dig her nails into every man who seems to be good husband material. She tried it with you and you don't need a crystal ball to know that she's for sure trying it with Hen too. And for the record...I'm worried about him, not jealous." Kat was all worked up now and Sam could easily tell that he'd hit a sore point.
"Henry is not an idiot, Kat. From my own experience I can tell you that Mel is anything but an enigma. I could tell what she's looking for after our first and only date and a man like Hen, who has to deal with gold diggers all the time, will see right through her without problems. There's no need to worry. And no need to be jealous." He grinned at her and Kat made a face. "Did you even listen to me? I've just told you that…"
"That you're not jealous. Yeah...yackety-yack. I know you, sis. You're in love with him. Don't try to deny it." Kat sighed and surrendered with a resigned smile. "Fuck, yeah and I feel like I'm sixteen again, Sammy. Confused and clueless. What is it about him that makes me feel like that? Why does it have to be so damn complicated?"
"It's not complicated. Trust him and listen to your heart."
"It's not that easy."
"No, obviously it's not. So maybe you should just ask him about Mel and work on your trust issues."
"It's not like I haven't asked him about her before. But I guess you're right. I'm gonna try again and talk to him tonight." She gave her brother a nod.
"At the meeting of The Lonely Hearts Club?" Sam winked at her with a grin that made Kat chuckle.
"He's told you about it?"
"Yeah. He's talked about it all week. Running around with piles of books, volumes of poems as far as I could see. Copying entire pages by hand into a notebook. To be honest, I think it's the reason for his good mood."
****
Maybe, Kat thought, or maybe he just enjoys fooling around with Mel.
When Kat climbed up the rope ladder a few hours later she had managed successfully to avoid Henry up to this point. She had spent the rest of the day in her room, brooding over Sam's words, about Henry and Mel for the umpteenth time and about the club meeting of course. She was close to chickening out but she decided to get her shit together and to enjoy the time with Henry on their little stroll down memory lane. And maybe, just maybe, she would even find the courage to ask him about Mel.
"Kat!" Henry flashed her one of those billion dollar smiles when she entered the tree house. "There you are." He hugged her and gave her a look full of relief. "I haven't seen you all afternoon. I was a little worried you'd stand me up."
"Neighbourly duties?" Kat asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
She gave him a smile and shrugged. "Well, you were not around when I came back…"
"Yeah...I was busy." He grinned sheepishly, scratching the back of his head.
"Huh?"
"Sam said you went to visit Mel."
"Ah, yes. Yes, I did. You know we have a little chat every once in a while. She's...nice."
"How lovely."
"The room looks great, Hen."
The awkward silence that fell over the room made them both uncomfortable. The unexpected tension left Henry in a state of insecurity. He'd hoped for an easy time with Kat, some intimate moments to share but the start of the night wasn't very promising. He cleared his throat before giving Kat a goofy smile.
"Shall we begin? I've prepared a little something. A few poems and...yeah." He shrugged helplessly and to his big relief Kat nodded with a smile. "Of course."
It was only then that Kat realized that Henry had decorated the treehouse with loving care. Blankets and cushions on the floor and candles in the corner of the room created a very warm and cozy atmosphere and a huge pile of books showed her that Henry was very well prepared for the first meeting of the Lonely Hearts Club since 1999.
"Thanks, kitty. Let's sit." He plopped down beside the books, his long legs stretched out and Kat sat down cross-legged next to him, placing a little bluetooth speaker on the floor. "Prepare for some 90s flashback. I picked all the cheesy love songs we listened to non-stop." She started the playlist and soft music filled the air. Henry smiled at her and took a deep breath before he started to speak solemnly in his best statesman's voice.
The way he looked at her took her breath away for a moment, his gaze intense and pleading, he seemed so vulnerable it made her heart miss a beat. She wanted to kiss the insecurity and sadness that crossed his handsome face away but her own doubts made her fight the need to be close to him. Instead she took the notebook he handed her over and opened it. She stared at the name of the poem that was written down in Henry's neat handwriting on the first page.
"I hereby declare the meeting of The Lonely Hearts Club open. Present are the founding members Katherine Elisabeth Spencer and Henry William Cavill."
Kat couldn't help but chuckle. He was such a dork.
"Would you do me the honor of reciting the first poem, dear kitty?"
She knew it all too well and yet she'd almost forgotten it existed. Forgotten or repressed, it didn't really matter, she still knew it by heart, since it was the very poem she had read countless times after Henry had broken her heart. The fact that he knew it too, that he'd chosen these verse to be read out loud made her wonder if it was as familiar to him as it was to her. She cleared her throat, closed the book and her eyes and started to recite.
"When we two parted by George Gordon Byron."
She paused and took another deep breath.
"When we two parted
In silence and tears,
Half broken-hearted
To sever for years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold
Colder thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this."
Kat flinched slightly when she felt Henry's warm hand in hers. She looked at him and she wasn't surprised when he continued, his voice warm and soothing like thick, golden honey.
"The dew of the morning
Sunk chill on my brow—
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now.
Thy vows are all broken,
And light is thy fame:
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shame."
The game was the same it used to be back in the days at Stowe. They took turns to read the stanza. The only difference was that they were holding hands now. Kat spoke the next words with a steady voice although on the inside she was trembling.
"They name thee before me,
A knell to mine ear;
A shudder comes o'er me—
Why wert thou so dear?
They know not I knew thee,
Who knew thee too well:
Long, long shall I rue thee,
Too deeply to tell."
She smiled at Henry, sensing that he needed her reinsurance for the last paragraph. He returned the smile and went on.
"In secret we met—
In silence I grieve,
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive.
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?
With silence and tears."
They sat in silence for several minutes, comfortable silence this time, the quiet connecting them in a way words never could.
"I've got another one you might like." Henry said softly after a while. He reluctantly let go of her hand, took the notebook and searched through the pages. "Here it is."
"Bring it on." Kat smiled at him, hardly able to hide the loving feelings that spread inside her chest and her belly. Henry nodded and began.
"My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety."
"That's beautiful, pop." Kat blushed under Henry's smirk when he heard the nickname slip from her lips. "William Wordsworth?" she guessed.
"Yes. I'd never heard of it before, but Mel showed it to me the other day."
Kat's smile faded like a shadow in the dark.
"Oh really, did she? So that's what you're doing when you meet? You read poems to each other?" Her voice had chilled in an instant, her body language switched from open hearted to closed off. Henry was confused by the sudden change of tone.
"Yes, she told me about it when I mentioned that I was looking for romantic poems by british poets. And no, that's not what we usually do."
"And what do you do? Usually?"
"Nothing special, as I've told you before. And honestly, Kat..it's none of your business anyway."
That felt like a slap in the face to her.
"Right...yeah...you're absolutely right. It's none of my business what you do or who you're fooling around with." Kat got up, tapping off non-existing dirt from her jeans with determined motions that showed how touched and churned up she was.
"Fooling around?" Henry got up too in a hurry, knocking his head on a branch that was part of the treehouse's roof. He cursed before he turned to Kat again. "You can't be serious. You don't really think I f...that I sleep with Mel, do you?"
"I don't know what to think, Henry. You spend so much time with her lately…"
"And I've told you it's harmless and I just visit our neighbour from time to time." He tried to take her hand but Kat took a step back, turning around to stare out of the window with a deep sigh.
"You still don't trust me." His voice was sad now and there was a note of disappointment too.
"I really want to, Henry. But it's so hard…" Her shoulders were trembling and her soft sobs told him she was crying. He hugged her gently from behind, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. "I know, kitty. And I know that I'm the one to blame for this dilemma. But you have to believe me. There's nothing between me and Mel. I don't fuck her and I'm not interested in her. I only care about you. Okay?" The last words were nothing more than a whisper in her ear, a light breeze of tones that made her want to believe him. She nodded, leaning into his embrace but she wasn't able to give him a proper answer. The truth was she had no answer. She knew she loved him but what she didn't know was if she was going to allow herself to act accordingly.
"Listen, Kat. This might not be the right time nor place to do this, but I need to ask you something. I'm going to Jersey next week for my mum's 70s birthday and I wonder if you'd want to come with me?"
Kat turned around in his arms abruptly, taken by surprise by his question. He didn't let go of her waist and so she found herself closer than ever to him, his gorgeous face right in front of her. "You want me to go to Jersey with you?" He nodded. "As my plus one. Yes." She freed herself carefully from his embrace. "But…"
"Let me explain." Henry took a step back to give her some space. "My mum invited me months ago and I accepted...of course...but to be honest, I've dreaded that family gathering since day one. All eyes will be on me, everyone's gonna try to wrap me up in cotton wool, walking on eggshells around me, wondering if I'm okay." He sighed and shrugged. "Don't get me wrong. I'm beyond grateful to have a family that is worried about me, loving people who care, but it also stresses me out. Having you by my side would be very helpful and besides that, I would hate to be separated from you again. Those five days last week were long enough, Kat and don't even make me start with the 22 years prior. You have no idea how much I missed you." He gave her a sheepish smile and she couldn't help but return it. "I missed you too, Hen. But I'm really not sure if this is a good idea. Your parents hardly know me."
"Don't be silly. They remember you very well. You spent Christmas 1998 with us. Please don't say you forgot about that...my parents invited you after I spent the summer with your family here in St. Ives."
"Of course I remember that. It was the most lively and jolly Christmas of my childhood. All those people at your parents house, the chatter and singing and goofing about, it was such a stark contrast to Christmas with my family."
"See...you can have that again. A crowded, noisy place, loads of laughter, alcohol, fun and food. When I asked my mum if it's okay to invite you she was so excited, Kat. She'd love to see you again and so would my dad and my brothers. And I'm sure you're gonna like my sisters-in-law and all my nephews and nieces." Kat smiled.
"That sounds good."
"So you're in?"
"I don't know. Where would we stay? At your parent's?"
"No. I always stay at a small cottage near the beach when I visit them. I bought it a few years ago."
Kat started to chew on her lower lip.
"Two bedrooms." Henry added with a wink before making the next try to take her hands. This time she didn't pull back. "Please say yes, Kat. Let's spend some time together. We can stay there for a week or so. When the whole Cavill bunch leaves after the celebration, it will only be you and me and lots of time to...to bond again. So what do you say?"
