Hi! I got my university result this morning and I’m a French major now! I got into one of the best universities in my country. I just wanted to share it with you, I hope you don’t mind. I’m kinda nervous, to be honest. There are lots of “what if’s” on my mind. What if I fail? It’s not my native langugae. I’ll do a preparatory year for French, tho. I also plan on taking online lessons from you. I don’t know if I wait for another year or major in French language and literature. I’ve always wanted to be a French major, but the fact that it’s not my native language... To top it off, some of my friends said it’s too hard to learn and I shouldn’t “waste” my time? I don’t think it’s a waste — far from it, but what if I won’t be able to succeed? :(

Congratulations, I'm very proud!

Number one: you got into of the best schools in the country. Repeat it again and again until it sticks. The people who made that happen didn't do it as a favour, they're looking for good students who will have good grades and let them keep their good reputation. They looked at your file and said yes. That's all you need to know. Those friends of yours aren't friends, and you'll find out with time that you'll sometimes lose people when you succeed because it makes them feel mediocre. I recommend you let them go. If you are graduating high school, you'll never see most of them again anyway.

Number two: you do want to research those programs and try to talk with current or former students to decide how to feel about them, but your priority should be to know what you want to do with that degree (c.f. first link). Natives that are French majors like me often end up either teaching or doing something completely unrelated. Foreigners who want to live here are made useless by French degrees (third link) unless they become academics, teachers or journalists.

Number three: if it means that much to you, there's no way it's a waste of time. Many of us during the pandemic found a way to make a passion into a full-time job and I'm sure you can do that as well. Also, when it comes to learning a language, there's no such thing as failure, but there's giving up too quickly. My students amaze me week after week and often refuse to believe it. Just because you can't see your own skill and progress doesn't mean it's not there.

Advice?

Does anyone have any advice for me.  I’ve decided to try learning French.  The thing is foreign language has always been really hard for me. I’m not good at memorizing things quickly and tenses confuse me a great deal.  I also am a little confused on why a table has a gender.  If anyone has any advice for me I’d really appreciate it. The truth untold

a/n: So back when euphoria came out did I get some ideas and wrote something. Sorry if it’s not so god, didn’t really read it through and english isn’t my first langugae

“Can you believe that  we got to grow up together? Like I saw then all as young kids and now are they grown ups with their own lives?” chuckling softly and foundly, Seok Jin recalled things from his past.

Everything was so bright, days filled with sunshine and laughs. Warmness painted everything, even under the cold winter days. Fingers grazed tenderly over pictures and words, sometimes was he present in them, sometimes not. Jin smiled wider, locking eyes with this random person who were willing to listen. 

“Jungkook..ah, Jungkookie was always a cutie. You should have seen him when a girl tried to talk to him” the sentence was followed by a laugh. Jin gazed at a picture of the youngest, bunny teeth and all. “Here look at him blushing!”

A foreign feeling of hurt spread in his heart, making him flinch slightly, smile falling just a little. Jin tried to remember things about him now, but the last time he can recall Jungkooks present was when he was around 21, which should be about 6 years ago. He looked down again, finding pictures of what looked like a hospital. Jin shook his head, deciding to look at the boy with a box smile instead.

“Oh oh, this is Taehyung! Always happy and let me tell you, his voice doesn't match his face!” a small dog laid in Taehyung's lap. Black hair fell over tired eyes, the smile wasn't like it should be, white wall turning him paler.” He’s old here, around 20..23 I believe?” Jin felt confused again, fingers lingering on the picture. 

“Let’s..Let’s look at an older picture!” he smiled fondly at the younger Taehyung. Bright eyes which was slightly faded met him. “He sure changed his appearance…”

Jin smiled at the person before him, flipping page after page, telling stories and remembering what had been. Small chuckles left him, while his heart hammered away with this nagging feeling of disaster. 

“This is Jimin!” he pointed at a boy, who smiled so big his eyes looked like half moons. In this old picture was his skin slightly more tan and his hair black, contrasting the next image Jin found, where Jimin had soft pink hair and fair skin, but both were Jimin, both were smiling. “He’s the same age as Taehyung. Look here they are!”

Jimin's eyes held sorrow, he was skinnier than before and Taehyung looked out a window. Jin kept staring at the white walls, wondering about them and why all of his brothers seemed to spend so much time surrounded by them. Taehyung's gaze followed the beach outside the window, preventing one from seeing his eyes, his emotions.

”This was back in 2018…”Jin looked at the date, realizing  it was a long time ago or was it still 2018? He wasn't sure..He just turned the next page, finding Namjoon with that awful black, sides shaved and standing up, hair. Seok jin laughed loud, seeing the embarsent on the youngers face. 

“See him? He’s Namjoon..Was always acting more grown up than he were.” Jin smiled as he let two fingers wander over the picture on the side, were Namjoon wore a smile himself.”He carried our group on his shoulders, even if I were the oldest” purple hair decorated him and Jin remembered trips with seven brothers, trips which led him to feel blissful. 

The next picture contained Namjoon again, this time with arms around Hoseok, sunshine behind them but never warming the image, white killing it. Both smiled at the camera but not like they should. Namjoons hair was silver and his skin paler, his arms thinner than they should be. Jin felt agonized, he looked like he was dying. 

“2018..” murmuring to himself, Jin looked at the person before him, searching for answers, getting nothing more that a headache. 

“Hoseok..H-Hoseok was always happy. The sunshine of our little group” teenage Hoseok with black hair smiled so wide it probably hurt. The boy was loud and never seemed to run out of energy but the next image of him in a white bed shock Jin deeply. His radiation were gone, cheeks hollow, skin grey. Hoseok tried to smile even though his eyes no longer wanted to fight. A figure sat by his bed, shaking but Jin couldn't believe that it had ever happened. Hoseok was alive and happy somewhere, not like this, not like the picture. It frightened Jin when he read the date..2018. “H-he always made m-me smile…”

Jin couldn't keep talking, his mind began to work to hard, to kill him. Finger started to flip page after page, searching for a date that was alive and not killing him. His flipping stopped at page 57, one of the final pages. Yoongi stared out a window, like Taehyung, but his eyes could be seen. Empty. Nothing..Grey to life and death. Black hair hung in his eyes and the more Jin looked, the more did Yoongi become a ghost. 

“Yoongi didn't say much but..but always cared for us…” Jin gazed at the opposite wall, tears building up in his eyes, fingers trembling. What is happening?

“Where are they? Do you know?”quiet, everything was quiet, like the world let him grieve the losses of  heartbeats in his life.

“I’m sorry..but they can't be here right now..” the voice was drowned out by the last picture in his book of memories. 

It was older than 2018 but still was the final memorie. They all smiled, so wide and innocent. Six figure looked to be in pure euphoria and he realised that he weren't in the picture, he took it. 

A book hit the floor of a hospital which he spent all his days, tears left his aging eyes. Jin couldn't comprehend what had happened. His heart screamed that they were dead but his brain didn't let him hear the truth. It stayed untoled so his soul wouldn't shatter. For Jin were the truth untold. 

“It’s okay Jin, we can keep going another day. Rest a little, okay?”Jin stared confused at the walls which inclosed him. All of them white and plain. A beeping sound annoyed him and something was hooked at his arm. 

“What is this?” his heart started hurting way too much and slowly were tears falling over his cold cheeks. Jin felt dead and broken. Why?

The truth is that all the boys which made him smile were dead. All lost in a tragic accident that  left one survivor, him. You were his doctor and you hated it, because every time you went to talk with him, would his brain make up images of his brothers and it wouldn't let him remember what really happened. Survivor's guilt ate away at his body and soul, leaving someone in the past. Jin was sure that he would see them all soon again but the were all long gone and was left to walk the earth alone. You watch him everyday for the past years, seeing him lose himself more and more.

Do you speak languages?

Yeah... I've learned quite a few.

I learned English at around 2-3 years old... because my family thought I should know it... and my native tongue (Bulgarian language). I then started learning English formally in secondary school and had more classes in English, in 4th grade and then we started Russian in 5th grade (which is similar to Bulgarian)... Then after this background with languages I could later continue studying at a language high school, mostly Russian and we had a choice of a new language and the class chose Italian in the last 2 years of school... I also did a one month course in French recently. I am only very good at English and Russian as foreign langugaes lmao (know it at a bilingual level).

Good afternoon!  When I read posts of absolutely different people, I understand that it’s very difficult to find a person who can be your pen pal.  As for me, I live in Barnaul. This city is located in Siberia. I like Barnaul because there are some amazing buildings and places which have own history. Howevеr, I would like to move as I was planning to study at university in an another city. I have a lot of different questions about my future life but I don’t have the answeres, so I am very nervous last months. I hope that time will answer all my questions.  I am absolutely alone at the moment. Loneliness has own pluses and minuses at the same time. So, I would like to communicate with people who live in various countries. It seems to me that  it is cool when you receive a paper letter from your friend! By the way, I am going to devote my life to studying foreign langugaes because I feel that it is my mission. I can spek English quite well but, of course, I can make some mistakes, unfortunately. Oh, I have recently began to learn German, so I will be glad if you speak German and help me. Maybe, you learn this language too, so we can do it together. I suppose that every language is unbelievable. I am going to learn French or Polish when autumn will come.  Certainly, I like to read Russian classics. I am passionate about the epoch when these books were written. One of my favorite books is “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy.  My musical preferences are quite ordinary. I am fan of “The Beatles”, “Smokie”, “ABBA”, “Scorpions” and etc. Also, it is a famous singer Dean Read. Well, I can listen to songs of modern bands.  In conclusion, I want to say that I will be really happy if someone responds. We can send paper or electronic letters to each other, we can discuss interesting topics and tell each other about our life. Have a nice week!

Do you know how potentially could I use my native language when studying in English-speaking country at a university level (with no relation to linguistics or anything remotely similar) to earn money? Tbh I'd love to help, let's say, in (to? at?) a publishing industry, anyhow but I have no experience nor degrees but I know I'll need that extra money for myself. I hope it's all right to ask this! I've never dealt with foreign employment rules so I'm at a complete loss right now

This is a great question! If you’re seeking formal employment whilst studying in a foreign country, always consult your visa rules first. Always. I can’t stress this enough. 

I guess the most immediate route is to tutor your native langugae on a casual basis. The languages faculty at your university may help, or stick up an informal ad on your university’s notice board etc. Ask friends and use your networks. 

If you’re looking for experience in the publishing industry, start with your university based student run publications. Whilst it’ll be unpaid, the networks and opportunities you make may be a key stepping stone to paid work in the future. 

You could always apply for general internships (internships who accept a students from a wide diversity of disciplines) - being able to speak more than one language will certainly set you apart from the competition! 

Another alternative would be to seek your community based publications or getting involved in community based groups who speak your native language. They usually send out newspapers/publications in your native language, translate important/ gov documents, hold events etc. 

Otherwise your general causal jobs (retail, food, volunteering) may also give you opportunities to speak your native language, especially if you’re working in customer service.

Lego English

I found I am changed a lot after I tried my lego english. Lego english is a new way to learn forign langugae. I learn foreign language like lego. I am wirting English witohut considering grammar and spelling. I did it but I changed now. When I reading a book, I applied same strategy in my reading. When I met a difficult word, I don’t loop up a dictionary. I just read an article continusouly. Then, I image the new words in an article. I found that approach is much helpful to improve my reading skill. I thought it is not a good idea and make me a struggle. However, I eventually found that it is very natural. Now, I can do it without any notification. I am reading very diffcult article naturally whether it is TIems or technical documents. I can read them very easily and comfortably. Previouslu, when I meet a difficult article, I could not go forward because of its difficulty. However, now it is no problem to read such article. There are no much diffrences between easy and difficult articles. I am reading them easily. 

More over, when I write an article I feel simlar feeling. When I write a new article in English, I can now write for any idea and any topic. Previoudly, it was very difficult for me to write a new text adn non technical description. Now, everything is the same to me. Regardless how much it is difficult, I can make sentence by myself as I can do when I use Lego blocks. I can make any thing with lego when I was youung. I can make an human-like object and a tank or an airplane. Therefore, I can write any sentence using English words. It is not difficult to me now. I don’t worry how my English becomes better because by natural comparison in our brain, mine becomes better and better. However, if we don’t represent my current status, you couldn’t chnage to be better or correct. Therefore, represening statements without your current capability is most important to be a good writer or reader.
