Breaking this in with my current project: updating my beloved 30th Anniversary Francie, which I’ve had since 1996.
The backstory: I first saw this Francie in a display case at Toys R Us. The case was meant for collectors’ dolls, and for whatever the reason this particular Francie caught my eye and I wanted her badly. Being $35 at the time (or close to it), that was considered expensive for a Barbie doll in our family. And since it was meant for “adult collectors”, my parents wanted to make sure I was serious about taking good care of her.
The caveat was that I wasn’t to bite my nails for an entire month. Long story short, I managed to pull it off and Francie became mine!
She’s experienced a lot over the years: playtime where she would take on the role of various fictional characters from cartoons we’d watch as kids, a few cross country moves, and dogs. Her Gad-Abouts outfit is no longer around, just the swimsuit. And as you can see by the hair… yeah.
So this year, I decided on a whim to teach myself rerooting and after a few bad starts with other attempts on other heads, I took up fixing up my Francie. She’s *close* to being finished, but there’s still a few parts that need to be filled in and her eyelashes need to be done.
Then comes picking out a new body for her. Maybe a MTM, maybe a Francie body… but crossing that bridge when I get to it. :’)
Do you think Francie’s comment about Paul anonymously sending John and Yoko a note calling her a slur (j** tart) is true? I know it’s mostly brushed off as a lie by fans but Paul was definitely struggling at that time and was allegedly capable of being just as scathing as John off record so it seems like something he could’ve done tbh. The fact she says he copped to it and played it off as a ‘joke’ also sounds like something he’d do to backtrack. Would make sense why John would have been deeply hurt by Paul and weary of letting him get close to him.
I don't think Francie is outright lying, but that doesn't preclude her from having misinterpreted what actually happened. The story doesn't read to me as implausible in isolation, but I do find it doubtful that it was a major factor in the rift between John and Paul.
@no-reply95 made an interesting post a few years back, compiling certain reasons the story doesn't quite add up.
Here's some extra thoughts from me:
IF it actually happened more or less like Francie tells the story: then, offensive as the joke was… I'm not sure it would have been unreasonable for Paul to think John wouldn't take it seriously. That's not me endorsing racist jokes, that's me acknowledging that um… John made that type of joke all the time. And worse ones too. I'm also not outright accusing John of hypocrisy; he probably (somewhat) stopped making jokes like that around the time he and Yoko got together… I just mean that a joke like that might fall into John and Paul's normal mode of conversation more easily than some of us would like to believe. Again, I don't fully believe Francie's account, but I do feel the story isn't often contextualized right.
I think it's possible the note was from Paul (or was one of the nasty postcards John and Yoko received from "fans" and placed there by Paul) and it initially upset John and Yoko, but the situation still resolved itself with no hard feelings afterwards.
I also think it's possible it wasn't from Paul and he sarcastically copped to it and was initially misunderstood as being serious.
Both of these are just scenarios that to me would make more sense of neither John nor Yoko ever mentioning it afterwards. I acknowledge that it's not fair to burden them with confirming Francie's account before I take an accusation like that seriously, that it isn't John and Yoko's job to make every bad thing Paul did or said to them public in order for it to be a valid complaint… But I also can't deny that it falls outside of their normal pattern of behaviour to not mention it if it did happen. Especially given that John freely made more dubious accusations of racism (Paul apparently looking at Yoko while he sang Get Back).
Ultimately, to me, the most eyebrow-raising part of the account is that Francie frames this event as a huge factor in John and Paul's falling out. That reads as her inserting herself into the main narrative, by using a scene she witnessed to explain the big "Why?" of the Beatles breakup. "I was there when John and Paul fell apart doncha know!" Maybe that wasn't conscious on her part; it makes sense to explain things to oneself with readily available knowledge (ie. Francie finds out John and Paul are fighting and she connects this to one fight she witnessed between the two) but it definitely is… weird to me.
Totally Hair Barbie was the bestselling Barbie line, but if I had to guess what the most well-known Barbie line is, I am fairly sure that would be Malibu Barbie.
Malibu Barbie first debuted in 1971. Not only that, but she also had a whole series of pals - Malibu Christie, Malibu PJ and Malibu Francie.
The line was released over the course of a few years, with different variations on packaging and oufits.
This became such an iconic part of the line that it saw multiple celebratory and anniversary rereleases over time.
Interestingly - or maybe this is only interesting to me, I'm not sure - this old Sears ad for the The Sun Set Malibu Barbie range advertises that the dolls originally went for under $2 apiece.
Malibu Barbie has become such an iconic part of the Barbie history that a lot of parodies of Barbie will specifically refer to her. For example, the famous Barbie parody from The Simpsons was Malibu Stacy.
Even though Malibu Stacy appears to be the name of the whole collection in this case, not just a single doll in an overarching "Stacy" line.
Just got back from the local doll show! We gave 2 here, one in August and one in October - I don’t think I ever posted my august dolls, so I’m just posting everyone together now.
I already have an Aja, but her outfit was so cute I couldn’t resist.
Most of 2 Dollikins - only one butt between them, so I’ll have to figure that out.
Dawn and…somebody. Let me know if you know exactly who. Her body is only different from Dawn’s in that the legs are blown plastic instead of click knee, and she has what look like Dawn markings on the back of her head, but no branding, no date like dawn has on her butt, and lacking rooted eyelashes, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dawn without?
Remco Heidi and Jan.
Two Skippers and a Malibu Francie.
Two Harleys and a Blackfire. No plan for the Harleys yet, but the Blackfire body with a non-orange head is gonna be Madame Rouge.
Ohhhhh she's so pretty I was actually starting to feel guilty for wanting to debox her but then I noticed the box has tears at the top so out she comes!
