so I’m One Whole Session in on my first proper foray into dungeon mastering, and we’re playing a sliiiiightly modified Rime of the Frostmaiden. These are some of my added npcs!
The folks in the matching outfits are members of the Shepherds of Light, a Lathandite charity organization that sent aid up to the Dales in an effort to help them get through the eternal winter. The cargo ship Sunrise carried the party and some goods and a crew of about 15 people up via the Sea of Moving Ice, where it did. It did sink. Somewhat.
It’s about half sunk, actually, and the ship now sits just barely above the ice, held aloft by the iceberg that did it in. But hey if you look far enough on a clear day you can see the Sunrise over the sea from Ten-Towns!
The Druid is a mystery, so far - they haven’t met her yet.

sometimes i want to reach through the screen and shake sabo by the shoulders because. god. there's just so much going on with him.
he's first introduced through the veil of luffy's memories- here he's just another feral jungle kid, sticking it out with ace and luffy, the 'nicer' brother in young luffy's eyes. and then boom. you find out he's a runaway noble trying to escape his abusive, neglectful family- and this changes nothing, they still get to become sworn brothers, but just as quickly as this is resolved, his asshole of a dad takes the three of them hostage. and what does sabo do? he gives up the little sliver of freedom he'd fought for, is willing to become miserable and lonely again if it means ace and luffy are spared. and then he comes home to find that in his absence, his parents have already found a replacement! great!
and he doesn't even get to address how fucked up that is, because stelly runs his mouth and now sabo's too busy trying to figure out how to stop his brothers and their home from getting burnt to the ground. he never gets to give them a proper goodbye- he exhausts himself trying to reach them, but he can't because. you know. he's ten. so where does this leave sabo? ten years old, with nowhere to go- he sets out to sea to try and start over, and for the crime of wanting to escape a terrible life, he's punished with an explosion to the face. he loses his memories, his brothers lose him- and so the cycle continues.
then the army saves him, takes him in; he's essentially a child soldier, with how prodigious of a fighter he is from the get-go. but hey, he thinks he's finally found his footing, even if his past's a blur to him- then it all comes flooding back. in the worst way possible. he sees his brother's corpse and he remembers, but it doesn't matter, does it? he's too late, ace is gone, and sabo's lost ten years of a life he could have shared with his brothers. we don't even know how (if, even) he recovers from this- except for a single passing statement from koala, asking him if he's 'had that dream again' because he'd been crying in his sleep. this is never brought up or addressed again. great!plus, we never do find out if getting blown up at the ripe old age of ten could have left any lasting fire-related trauma; and if it does, what does that mean for sabo, who's pretty much made of it, now?
both of these questions are answered at once- sabo treats the fire as if it's ace. it's ace's legacy he's carrying on, and it's ace he seeks freedom for. he copes by making sure ace lives on in his flames, and how can he ever hate the fire living in him if that fire is all he has left of the brother he never got to see again?
i just have to wonder about him, because he's got so many Issues that just. don't ever get addressed? every time we see him deal with his grief (episode of sabo, his own retelling of events in dressrosa) we never really discover anything about him. i wonder how it felt to finally remember the childhood that eluded him, just to find out he was an unwanted, replacable child. how he feels, living with the knowledge that he could have done something to save ace, that he'd failed to remember the two people he loved the most? i wonder just how terribly that guilt must weigh down on him- because where luffy's already begun to heal, sabo still sees ace in everything he does. his title of flame emperor is a direct callback to ace's final attack in his fight against blackbeard. he talks to his goddamn fire like his brother is still in front of him, which is sweet and heartbreaking and, considering his backlog of unaddressed trauma... incredibly unhealthy. i know these will probably be left unresolved for the sake of moving the story forward- but god, sabo, are you okay?

it has been literal YEARS since I read the shadow hunter books and i am STILL not over the incest jace-clary storyline. besties it isn’t even the grossness of it all it’s the fact that 1) they just believed the evil, pathological bad guy who would do anything to destroy them and 2) how literally easy it is to disprove the incest theory. CATARINA LOSS LITERALLY WORKED IN A HOSPITAL just get her to do a damn DNA test and whoop oh my god look how easy it was they weren’t siblings. still drives me nuts to this day. WHY WOULD YOU JUST WITHOUT QUESTION BELIEVE YOUR EVIL DAD???? WHY WOULD YOU DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO TEST THIS THEORY?????

Clary took a deep breath. “Were you ever in love? Before the Brotherhood? Was there ever anyone you would have died for?”
There was a long silence. Then:
Two people, said Brother Zachariah. There are memories that time does not erase, Clarissa. Ask your friend Magnus Bane, if you do not believe me. Forever does not make loss forgettable, only bearable.
“Well, I don’t have forever,” said Clary in a small voice. “Please let me in to see Jace.”
Brother Zachariah did not move. She still could not see his face, only a suggestion of shadows and planes beneath the hood of his robe. Only his hands, clasped in front of him.
“Please,” Clary said.

Morpheus is a truly fascinating character to look at from a moral perspective because he's such a dick but about 50% of the time it's on accident and the other 50% it's on purpose, but not because of any genuine hate or malice just... poorly directed sadness. Neither of these reasons make it okay, but they make it damn hard to see where the lines are regarding guilt, blame, and forgiveness. As if this isn't enough, hearing Morpheus' take on things (or appalling lack thereof) along with some others makes it even harder to grapple with.
When I'm analyzing this first 50%, I often come back around to asking whether someone should punished for something they didn't know was wrong, which is a normal hard and fast 'no', but this someone has had millinea to find out it is wrong and correct it and hasn't, which then pulls me into questioning where the ignorance becomes willful. Especially when the individual is so blindsided by the idea that there might even be something wrong. Morpheus is cold and aloof, which I put down to a general temperament thing; the problem is that he can't afford to be. This is, quite literally, a major reason why the series ends the way it does. He wasn't particularly mean to Lyta, just not very kind or understanding. He was busy and distracted and hurting and didn't explain what was going on or offer much sympathy (none in the comics). Is it okay that he did that? No. Do I understand why and feel sad that a trait that is innocuous to most was deadly to him? Yes, of course always, yes.
The other 50% where Morpheus is trying to hurt people, it's born out of his own hurt, as most cruelty is. He is not a malicious being; cruel, but not malicious. The way he treats Destruction is from his own wish to escape the weight of their existence and a frustration that someone did it, someone did it and he couldn't stop or join them. He doesn't actually hate Destruction, Dream clearly blames himself at least in part for his leaving and seems to miss him as much he wants to respect or exile him for the deciding to do so. He's on the fence about how to act and overcompensates by being desperately terrible, which is what he always fucking does. That's the worst part! I chose Destruction specifically as an example because the situation lays bare the core of his cruelty very, very well. Nada and Orpheus are good examples as well. Dream doesn't like not knowing what to do, doesn't like being scared and can't stand the idea of being thought of as anything less than perfectly confident and controlled at all times (wow, so healthy!). He doesn't want people to look at him and see someone who needs comfort so he doesn't let them look at all, and ensures they don't by pushing them away at the slightest offense. If they brush against an insecurity or hurt, he's trained himself to lash out rather than lick the wounds. He condemns Nada to Hell when she sees who he is and rejects him for it; He leaves Orpheus on an island for a thousand years because he reminded Dream that he can't fix everything, or even keep those he loves safe; He's so unforgiving and rude towards Destruction because he did what Dream desperately needed to do but couldn't.
Thing is, these are both fixable flaws with obvious sources, but he has spent so long living by them that he doesn't know any other way to do so. Maybe it makes me an apologist—I'm willing to acknowledge that I can tend to hold a warped perspective on things—but I see his core personal moral failings as holding himself to an ordinary standard of behavior when an extraordinary one is needed and feeling that somehow his power and suffering makes him better than just about everyone else (now think about that and Lucifer and lose your mind briefly.) He isn't, on the whole, awful and irredeemable. He's flawed and he's trying, but when one is endless there is very little room for such a thing.
Then I end up asking the question: did he deserve it? does anybody? And that's... hard. Morpheus caused real hurt and damage, intentional or not, across space and time. Does he deserve to die for it? I would like to say no, but I would also see reason in saying yes. The questions get big, applicabilty of death penalty and impact of intention on action big, and that's usually when I stop the train. The point of Morpheus' weird and complex morality is to drive the train straight into the sunset, which I fully encourage those who can do it safely to do but if I did, we would be here until tumblr was ash.
So I can't offer an answer with a neat little bow, or even a particularly persuasive argument as to the final moral determination of Morpheus as a character, but that wasn't necessarily my goal. I can tell you one thing for sure: he would majorly benefit from one (1) positive and healthy friendship.

Marsh the Terminator in era 2
I joked in the tags of another post that Marsh is basically the terminator in era 2 mistborn. The thing is the more I thought about it the more accurate I think it is.
I mean, Branderson's already said that time has caused a decrease in the strength of allomancy (and feruchemy?) so Marsh's allomancy is already scary strong. But I'll just leave that as a minor point here, because I'm here to talk about compounding.
Marsh has a selection of feruchemy and allomancy and I don't know which ones BUT. The end fight of HoA with Elend suggests double-gold (I think a WoB confirmed this) which basically qualifies him as the terminator all by itself. Miles did some crazy shit in AoL. He blew himself up! Holding the stick of dynamite! So Marsh can survive some pretty insane injuries. Practically anything, with the one caveat of the spike in his back.
But what else does he have? He's compounding atium, for sure, because he's alive. (If he uses allomantic atium we know how that goes in a fight. And era 2 Marsh is one of the only people with it.)
He must also have double steel and iron. We see him with feruchemical steel, and I think iron as well but I'd have to double check. Doesn't that mean that he can access these in basically unending amounts using compounding? Centuries is a long time to build up feruchemy stores as is but... Marsh might not have needed to store very much at all if he can compound them.
SoS showed what feruchemical steel is like and he's got essentially unlimited stores! Coinshots would have a nightmare time with him because of the steel which, again, unlimited amounts. And it doesn't matter if you hit him anyway, because unlimited healing!
I don't know what else he has. Possibly not feruchemy copper, because why would Ruin give him that? He can probably hide his allomancy from anyone with his crazy strong copper, but no memory storage. (what the hell happens if you burn stored memories anyway? I have questions).
I had to google feruchemical bronze and its wakefulness. I have no idea if Marsh has that. Obviously he has allomantic bronze. So much allomantic bronze.
Not to mention the duralumin. (Extra, extra strength allomancy).
He probably doesn't have cadmium/bendaloy. Ruin would have known about it, but if its not readily available whats the point? (Unless, of course, Spook spiked someone and Marsh swapped out another spike for it. But I don't see it. I think Marsh would be more likely to zip up to him with his insane feruchemy powers and knock Spook into next week for practicing Hemalurgy. But I could be wrong).
So Marsh has a mix of feruchemy and allomancy (at a stronger level) and compounding. And duralumin. And atium. Obviously he has the significant drawback of being really limited or where he can go subtly, because he's a little noticeable. But if he decides to weigh into a fight? That fight is over.

Vines and Blood Soaked Dirt
@rainbow-frog-earrings
i swear when i made this i wasn’t going for angst but the book timeline y’all—
tw: blood, kidnapping, choking, death
Of all the bad decisions Simon has made in his lifetime, this has to be the worst. He just had to come along to talk to the Seelies.
Great job there Lewis, now you’ve got vines threatening to kill Jace and Clary, they think bitterly. Of course he’d do this.
“What do you even want?” he asks, not taking their eyes off of Clary and Jace, who gasp for air that will not enter their lungs.
“I want to play a game,” the Seelie Queen says lightly. She seems so excited, smiling like Rebecca does when she’s about to bankrupt Simon in Monopoly.
“Like what? Fucking checkers?” he snaps.
Great job, Simon. Perfect reaction. The Seelie Queen laughs, throwing her  head back slightly. Then she looks back to Simon, smiling with sharpened teeth.
“Kiss the one you desire most,” she tells them. She stares at him as his face twists in surprise. They know he can’t take much longer, one thing they remember from Rebecca’s true crime phase is that it doesn’t take much longer than four minutes to choke. He doesn’t know how long it’s been, but it can’t be much longer now.
“This cannot be real,” they mutter. The Seelie Queen opens her mouth, Simon turns to glare at her. They don’t have time for whatever stupid remark she’s going to come up with.
He knows who he should be kissing. They know exactly what everyone’s expecting and why Jace eyes are telling him, for the Angel’s sake just kiss her already, and why Clary’s are telling them, come on, kiss me already.
But he also knows exactly why they hope their eyes are telling the two, for fucks sake this is not an easy decision right now. They know it really should be, kiss his girlfriend to keep the two, you know, alive. But with the, well, certain feelings he’s been having for Jace recently (okay, not recently), make it a bit harder than anyone in the court thinks it should be.
“One more minute,” the Seelie Queen says in a sing song voice that makes Simon want to claw his hears out.
Okay, okay, okay. Easy choice, Lewis. It’s Clary. Ms You’ve-Been-In-Love-With-Since-Seventh-Fucking-Grade, Simon tells themself. Then they take one look at Jace and all he can think is:
Wow. Goddamn yeah, there goes all my certainty.
“Oh! The boy’s lips are blue! Oh my, I didn’t think it would take you this long.”
Fuck.
Simon decides that if he can’t decide, why not kiss them both? Work out their feelings by magic, not actually figuring it out.
He kisses Clary, stepping back and realizing that, oh shit, the vines aren’t moving.
I’ll deal with this later. They hope that this won’t make Jace hate him even more than he already does. Simon grabs the sides of Jace’s face and kisses her blue tinted lips, quickly and pulling away after just a moment.
The vines are already almost off of the two. Jace looks surprised, and Simon can’t blame them. Clary is seething, and Simon can’t blame her. They know she’ll start yelling soon, Clary always yells when she’s mad.
“I—I have to go. Game night with Becca,” Simon says quickly. They can hear Clary yelling at him for them to come back when he starts to run away. Someone’s running after them, heavy footsteps falling behind his own. They don’t look back to know who. He loses whoever was following them.
He doesn’t know where he’s even running to, their lungs and legs burning so painfully they could think he was even on fire. He stumbles in their steps until they tumble to the pavement of an alleyway, rocks digging into his hands. It leaves them heaving on the ground wishing his jeans weren’t ripped on the knees, with blood staining the pastel purple denim. These have always been his favorites.
They press their hands to his knees, trying to stop the bleeding, only pushing the rocks deeper into their skin. Tears spring to his eyes. They run a hand through his hair, streaking blood through the brown.
“Do you need help?” someone asks, voice like velvet. Simon doesn’t look up, and shakes their head. The someone grabs their hand from their hair and sighs as if looking at a home cooked dinner.
“No. I don’t need help,” Simon says quickly. Maybe they did not see the shake of his head.
“Disappointing, it would be easier.” Fear rises in Simon. This will not end well.
“Let me go.”
Silence.
“Let me go,” he says, stronger in his words with confidence they do not have.
The stranger picks Simon up. Simon tries to fight.
The stranger is so strong.
“Let me go!” Simon shouts. They do not. They drag him into a rundown building that Simon would recognize anywhere. Hotel Dumort, the worst possible place for him to be. He screams more, trying desperately to pull away, to run, to do anything but be here.
He screams for help as more and more vampires come in, looking at him, smiling, and saying:
“Trust me, you’ll be some much better after this. You’ll thank us.”
He screams and screams until they can’t anymore. There are so many fangs in his skin, draining every ounce of blood from their body until the rest of the world turns to black. Their life having been torn from his body.
.
They’re so hungry when he wakes up. Oh so hungry and they can smell the blood through the dirt. The dirt, so thick and heavy, pressing down on his chest. He is cold. Is that why?
He digs and digs, rocks tearing up their hands that will not bleed. Breaking to the surface they take a gasp of breath that they do not need to take, soil thick in his lungs. Someone throws blood to him.
They break into the bag, blood running down their filth caked throat.
He is not hungry anymore. But their hands are bloody.
How did they get this blood? They cannot remember. Why is dirt covering their body? Oh god, what has he done? What has been done to them?
Someone’s hand grazes his shoulder, he scrambles away. They will hurt whoever it is. They will not hurt anyone else. They begin to hyperventilate with his lungs that shouldn’t breathe inside a body that is too cold.
He stares at their hands, which have started to sting with blood that is not his. That will never be his because blood will never be something that is his again.
“—Simon!” someone yells. They snaps their head to the yell. Jace is there, concern laced in her features. Jace steps closer. Fear bubbles up in Simon’s throat, but they do not back away. Clary is standing off to the side. She is crying, he thinks. Is it Clary’s blood in his veins? Did he hurt her?
The thought makes him sick.
“It’s okay,” Jace says softly. It is not okay. It will never be okay. The inside of his bottom lip bleeds, fangs of his own cutting them. Simon tries to speak. All the sounds get stuck in the dirt of their throat.
Go. I will hurt you just as they hurt me. I have hurt someone already, he longs to say. Make Jace step away from his cursed self. She steps closer, and sits next to Simon.
They try to back away, to save Jace. A gravestone stops him. Jace moves back.
“Cough, Si, it’ll get the dirt out of your throat,” Jace tells them softly. Simon does, blood soaked filth coming from his throat. They look to Jace, taking in a shaky breath he does not need.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” they say. His voice ragged, still ruined from screams and rocks. He stares at his hands, stained with cherry red. Jace reaches out, a cloth wiping away the stains.
“You haven’t hurt anyone. It was cows blood, Raphael brought it.”
“No—they did. I will, it’s—”
“You are not who did this to you, Simon.” Jace holds Simon’s hands, looking him in the eye, and Simon finds it hard to convince themself that Jace is lying with his next words. “You’re still you, and I know you. And you won’t hurt anyone.”
Simon shakes, harder and harder until sobs start to come. He pulls Jace towards him. Jace holds them, rubbing circles on his back while he grips Jace’s shirt.
He is careful not to crush Jace with strength he should not have.
“I’m sorry, Simon. I should’ve protected you,” Jace whispers. He holds Simon closer, Jace’s warmth making Simon’s cold fade away.
They do not know how to respond.

“A Fairchild and a Herondale,” she said. “Now, I like that. The Fairchilds have always been practical and the Herondales — well, you know.” She sounded fond, amused. “Perhaps she’ll settle him down. And don’t tell me he doesn’t need settling.”
Jem thought of Jace Herondale. How he was like Will if someone had struck a match to Will and gilded him in living fire. “I’m not sure you can settle a Herondale, and certainly not this one.”

Meiko and A'kihiko are part of the same shard of Azem on the Source -- the shard simply fragmented into two pieces. The far bigger chunk became A'kihiko, which is why he looks and acts much closer to Azem than his sister does. The smaller chunk made up Meiko.
Meiko is technically "weaker" than her brother in at least some aspects because of this. While the events of Endwalker make it clear as to why A'kihiko got Hydaelyn's Blessing first, it's still worth noting that if you had to pick between the siblings, Hiko was the all-round better choice.
It's only after Meiko absorbs Ardbert -- a whole, full shard of Azem of the First -- that she becomes equal to her brother's power and ability. You could mess with percentages and such saying that she's technicaly 1.15 Shards of Azem so wouldn't she be stronger, but nah -- A'kihiko is the closest to core Azem, so they're totally equal now.
And besides, it's not a contest and Meiko would really rather not absorb anymore souls.
