Made a ref for Cucamelon! I'm going to finish the rest of what is essentially fruitbugs versions of the Universal Monsters. Ones that have already been finished are Bloodlime (Dracula) and Pulasan (Wolfman). I think you can easily guess which classic monster Cucamelon is based on! He's also a Tiger beetle.

Cucamelon is a Genetically Modified Organism, made by the actually skillful scientist Jambul. The other GMO fruitbugs are... Less symmetrical and functional, and all made by Papaya. Jambul made Cucamelon to test his abilities, and create life from nothing. Jambul did not use any dead matter, he simply used fruits and lots of suspicious neon green fluid, to create an homonculus-like being, but with full sentience and with similar insides to normal fruitbugs (so fruit guts, bones made of literal bugs). Cucamelon is not perfect- with only one functional eye, stitches holding him together and a need for electricity to have energy/stamina, but compared to Papaya's creations he's a pretty successful experiment! Cucamelon has a good amount of intelligence, enough so to have had Jambul let him go to explore the world and learn on his own terms. Jambul COULD have taught his creation some things, but he's too busy to do so. Unfortunately, Cucamelon is very obviously a GMO, and people (mostly NPCs) reacted to him with fear and prejudice, sometimes even harrassing and/or threatening him. This is still ongoing, though Cucamelon tries to spend his time away from people, but that's not the easiest thing to do given he loves rockabilly music and tries to attend concerts.

Because of the general fear and bullying people have subjected him to, Cucamelon is closed off and generally don't interact with anyone, except for musical artists he likes. When someone DOES go out of their way to interact with him, they might notice his speech patterns and how he clearly learned how to talk by listening to rockabilly songs. He tries hard to have a southern drawl but whether he's good at it depends on circumstances- when he gets excited he overdoes it. And Cucamelon gets excited if he gets to talk about his interests and few good people experiences, but he'll only do so if he fully trusts you. To do that, you must never judge him for his appearance or mannerisms, or, better, talk about your own experiences to make him see you understand his situation. When he trusts someone, Cucamelon can get reveal himself to be pretty bubbly and can talk fast- usually eager to do activities he likes (with as few people as possible). He's shy towards others and his trauma responses ARE there, but with time and trust Cucamelon is a great friend or boyfriend. He can try to uplift you and would take a literal bullet for you if the occasion presented itself. You have to indulge him in letting him getting purposefully struck by lightning though, he needs that to recharge- literally.

There are a lot of pairings I don’t do often and I’m like… who are you how does this work?

Minerva and Howdy - I think Minerva gets on Howdy’s nerves. She’s very prim and proper and can learn how to let loose more, but she’s gradually learning that from Eddie. Whom Howdy also doesn’t like. I think Gentleworm is not a good duo. They will be very passive aggressive towards each other.

Antoni and Julie - Oh god no this would be chaos never let them in a room together they’d do bowling but with a real person on roller skates please don’t let Pastarcobaleno happen it would be TERRIFYING

Jonesy and Frank - A little kid and a proper man? We already know that Deirdre and Frank are good pals, but giving Jonesy another authority figure who has a garden? He may or may not get reprimanded for biting the tomatoes and maybe even eating a bug that Frank was studying. Safe to say, Fruitbug are not good friends.

Marnie and Sally - I think they only interact when Sally needs a musician to play in the pit. Marnie is suspicious of Sally because of how often Deirdre’s been writing stories about D and S names paired together. I think they don’t talk a lot, and it’s honestly for the best. No duo name here because I can’t think of one.

Paulette and Wally - Not bad actually! Wally listens and is interested in the pretty stars, he just doesn’t like staying up late. Wally ends up recreating Starry Night and Paulette is so happy. I actually think that’s their duo name… Starrynight is a fine choice in friends!

New guy, but know that this one isn't originally designed by me! i try to do so as sparingly as possible, but in all humility sometimes with adopts im just like. 'i can't do anything better than this' and make them fruitbugs. In this case, the regular form was designed by Kr-o on toyhouse, but the art here and the true form are by me. Here's the original art if you want to see it. And the designer allows species/fandom changes as said in his TOS (otherwise i would have done this of course). In any case, Mayhaw is a Giant Water Flea.

In the Fruitbugs game's Spooky level- a dark place where it's constantly nighttime, there is a dark forest that progressively turns into a swamp. And not a tiny shallow one, a deep, honest swamp the likes you'd see in subtropical places. There's a lot of unique fauna and flora there, and it's almost entirely left untouched by habitations (there's like one or two shacks in the whole area, one being unused). Despite the hostility of the habitat, some fruitbugs can be found there, and Mayhaw is one of them. He lives far away from any technology and lives in a hollow log underwater. He's not entirely clueless about modern items though, since he occasionally sees some in his swamp, such as boats, fishing rods and boots that got stuck in the mud and left behind.

While he lives a reclusive, feral life by choice, Mayhaw is very curious and likes seeing people in his swamp. However he's not good at smiling, so when he approaches people teeth bared, people usually get scared away. It doesn't help that he doesn't choose to talk, instead grunting and groaning while shambling or swimming towards the person or people he wants to greet. As a result, those who see him talk about Mayhaw as an agressive monster, that menacingly stalked them with ill intent- so needless to say he has a bad reputation. He doesn't get to hear about it, since people talk to their peers outside the swamp, but the fear they feel upon seeing him is all too clear to Mayhaw. He's hurt by their fear, and in reality just wants to interact with people, and actually get a friend or lover. He's lonely! If someone where to not flee upon seeing him, Mayhaw would either watch the other person's behavior, in an attempt to know why they are in the swamp to begin with, or try to gently play with them, by skipping stones for example. He trusts people relatively quickly (because he's pretty desperate), and can begin to talk to the other person. His voice is garbled, with what seems like a wet throat, and he speaks slowly with few words, but he'll try to talk anyway. He's a better listener though. Mayhaw can be a bit eager to get closer but if you tolerate his wet, scaly and jelly-like hand holding, he'll be a great, very loving and loyal lover.

Take 2 on some wip fruitbugs i've already drawn! ill link each initial drawing so you can compare if you want! Also short reinteration desc+indications of what have changed/new things that have been added conceptually.

Rose Apple, a Pink Spotted Ladybug who's a househusband by day, and a star by night! No one in-game knows he's one person, they're too fooled by the outfit change to guess. He's very societal-rule abiding as a househusband, to the point where players don't need to interact with him much to have a 'romantic' relationship. But as a star, Rose Apple defines society, by doing things so out of the norm that people follow his lead. He's actually the one that taught cis fruitbugs that it's ok to wear 'feminine' clothing. Whether he's cis or trans is up in the air now.

Santa Rita Pricklypear, a Brazilian Pink Bloom Tarantula that lives in the desert level. He's essentially a mechanic to keep players away from out of bounds areas- he can punch the ground to create small, temporary mesas/mountains to dissuade them from going too far. He's a grumpy man who takes his 'vigilante' job seriously, but if you get on his good side (which is hard) he gets easily flustered.

Mandarin Orange, an Eretmapodites quinquevittatus Mosquito who thinks he 'peaked' in terms of happiness during his childhood, in his world equivalent of the 2000s. As an adult, he's broke and unhappy and clings unto nostalgia daily and obsessively. He uses what little money he has to buy 2000s toys he doesn't have. It doesn't help that the game objectifies him, given he was initially female. He's recent so not much changes

Grey Speckled Cowpea who calls himself 'Lazaire', a Silver Ant who's kind of a saturday morning villain- he wants to make the whole world chrome/gray like he is. He can achieve this by simply touching whatever item or environment asset he wants to be chrome. However a simple dash of water will wear away his ability, making his efforts relatively futile, especially on rainy days. You can't really get past his goal and perfectionism, but you can join him in his endeavors and be his henchman. And potentially get close to him... Also know that as a Silver Ant, he's very fast, sometimes too much for the game's frame rate to handle.

Yellow Platanera, a Texas Wasp Moth who's a rockabilly star. He's pretty popular among npcs and players, but he feels like he'll never be as good as Pricklypear Glowkids in terms of music (despite the latter being a different genre (country)). Yellow Platanera doesn't mind getting close to his fans, entirely because he needs reassurance and for someone to feel worthy of love.

And Yellow Pitaya, a Hypselodoris Picta Sea Slug who's actually very fast, hyperactive and most importantly, violent. He crushes anyone in his path, just for the thrill of it. He's part of the dragon fruitbug group, and is unfortunately the shortest by far, which fuels his anger towards others. If you can accept him, maybe he'd be nicer?

i wanted to do a bunch of beach fruitbug guys for each color of the rainbow, so here's first draft designs! with a bg and slight persp bc i wanted to make it fun visually and felt like it. All these guys are generally seen on the beach of the Medit level (new one based on the mediterranean), but they can be encountered inland as well. They have different outfits depending on where you see them (inland ones will be drawn at a later date). in order from left to right:

Gean Wild Cherry, a Ghost Mantis who's even more flirty than Cherry Bond- which is an extraordinary amount. Gean will play and hang out with his friends, only for him to eventually set his sight on a specific person, that he will aggressively woo all day and until night falls. Why does he do that? For the thrill of it- Gean likes forming connections with people (even if his ways of doing it can be troublesome) and hopes that one day, he'll meet 'the one'. Despite his devious face and potentially boundary breaking flirting, Gean Wild Cherry doesn't mean any harm. He's just desperate for love...

Chislett Summer Orange, an Orange tailed Sprite Damselfly who has the peculiar ability to make people happy if he chooses to, but he can't make HIMSELF happy. He's pretty shy, and puts others' happiness above his own- he's no stranger to using his ability to distract people to defuse arguments or simply change the subject away from his problems. Despite his shyness, Chislett's friends tend to include him in anything they do and he hopes that he'll one day meet someone who will choose to make him happy specifically. He's unfortunately used to people ignoring him or choose one of his friends over him...

Menton Lemon, a Common Brimstone butterfly with a very (maybe overly) positive energy, that can be more or less communicative or grating (depending on point of views). He's not the leader of the group or anything, but Menton generally is the one to organize fun activities for all his friends to enjoy. They all trust him with this kind of thing, which so far haven't failed their expectations- which makes Menton feel pressured to not disappoint. While he's generally happy outwardly and inwardly, Menton has anxieties and hides them from everyone else, to 'not bring the mood down', or make things all about himself. Maybe he needs someone to confide in that won't judge his occasional 'negativity'...

Lime, a Spiked Devil Katydid who's unfortunately the 'mean one' of the friend group. He's not a bully or anything, he's 'just' ungrateful, not appreciating effort and fun activities, and generally adds snide remarks at both strangers and his friends. The latter tend to either ignore him (Gean, Summer, Cascade), or get hurt (Chislett, Menton, Myrtille) by his comments. Sometimes, on brave days, Lime's friends try to point out his negativity and mean attitude and try to talk him out of it, but Lime doesn't listen; because he views his friends as 'lesser' than him. If someone important like a fruitbugs player talked to him about his attitude, maybe he could change...

Myrtille de Sologne, an European lobster who's actually from the sea, while his friends come from inland. He's even some kind of sea royalty, most likely a prince! However he keeps this side of himself a secret- but he's not great at it, he has a formal way of talking (while the others are all casual speakers) and can mention things from his past that clearly show a wealthy background (ex: 'I once took a trip to a faraway country in a golden yatch, but it truly is not worthy of making a fuss about.'). Myrtille's the most intentionally introverted of the group, and the hardest to get close to. But maybe he'd like someone that doesn't judge him for his secretly rich background? He's not rich anymore anyway.

Summer Royal Grape, an Iridopelma oliveirai sp. tarantula- his name is Summer but he prefers strangers to call him Summer Royal. He's not royal anything though, he's a completely normal guy. Besides his physical strength that is (compared to his friends at least). Summer tends to be the one to win sport-related activities, but most of his friends try to beat him anyway; and they sometimes succeed, much to Summer's joy! He's the most supportive of the group, with no motives or magic powers behind his words- he just loves his friends, as flawed as they may be! It seems that Summer was once in a bad situation given how much he values the people he loves. He's the second easiest to get close to (first one being Gean who tries too hard).

Cascade Lilly Pilly an Asphaera quadrifasciata Leaf Beetle, who's a 'go-with-the-flow' type of guy. He agrees with anything his friends (except Lime) say or do- he doesn't have any needs or wants of his own. He's hard to have a conversation with, because it'll be probably one sided, only replying to things the player will say, never taking initiative to talk about anything himself. Cascade is almost like a ghost... Is he one...?

Decided to finish Pulasan! He's a drain fly!

In the fruitbugs' equivalent of eastern Europe, there's a whole level called (creatively) the 'Spooky level'- it's a place where the sun never rises, with a small village, a castle on a mountain (Bloodlime's) and a forest full of dead trees. Very few people go in the forest, mostly because there's not much there besides agressive, cartoonishly 'spooky' foes- but Pulasan is one of the very few fruitbugs that lives there. He calls himself a 'were' drain fly, but he looks and acts the same regardless of moon phases. Unlike some trans fruitbugs, Pulasan was coded as a trans man by default- the reason being that the fruitbugs creator, despite being straight and cis, thinks big, hairy trans men are cool. Deep down it makes him question his orientation, but the creator tries to shove it aside- however his secret repeated interactions with Pulasan in-game is telling. Pulasan was also given the ability to create 'wolf' foes the first word in quotations since Pulasan doesn't actually know what a wolf is, so they're more bug like than anything in both appearance and behavior (they chitter, and climb on trees). Those wolves foes have a mind of their own, but they obey Pulasan completely- they're more like weapons/bullets than anything despite that.

Pulasan is feared by some, due to his 'unusual' attitude- his thing is that he loves to live a feral life, where he bites and claws people he dislikes! He's not shy about it too, feeling no remorse after biting or clawing... Or so it seems! Pulasan DOES loves to bite, but he does feel bad, and most importantly he feels lonely. He has no friends- other fruitbugs heard of his behavior and avoids him as a result, even if the individual is 'stronger' than Pulasan himself. So he just wishes to one day meet someone who will either understand him and accept his personality, or, better, bite and claw with him. However Pulasan doesn't actually seek out people to meet and accept him- he just stays in his dead forest, hoping his lover will just appear one day- and that'll be the case, since players will have to go meet him in order to finish the game. As a person, besides his feral act, Pulasan is definitely love and attention-starved, which can make him very eager to get closer. In general he's always brash, loudly speaking (or roaring) what's on his mind, but he's even more so with people he likes. He'll be awkwardly overly eager/enthusiastic with any conversation, even you talk about the weather with him. Pulasan's just very happy to finally see someone who wants to be his friend! If you were to join in in his eagerness, or/and befriend him, then he'd get even happier (and probably won't be able to contain it)! He might try to act cool sometimes to impress you and can be a bit clingy, but he's fiercely loyal and will protect you from pretty much anything... Except a sentient bathtub, maybe. If a serious relationship is started with Pulasan, then he'll be very in need of physical affection and time spent together. He'll be much gentler with you, trying not to be constantly loud, but still just as happy.

Lots of new guys, lots of test designs! i'll give info on them, starting from up left to bottom right.

Pulasan! He's a drain fly, but he calls himself a 'were drain fly', despite him looking and acting the same way regardless of full moon or not. He lives in the Spooky level's forest, full of dead trees and with an ever present moon. Pulasan just loves to act feral and violent, and is not shy about clawing or biting people. As a result most people avoid him, and that actually makes him sad! He won't under any circumstances drop the 'were' act, but he IS lonesome and wishes someone could understand him. Also, Pulasan has the ability to create wolf spirits, but he seems to no real concept of what a wolf is, and makes them act like bugs (climb on trees for example) when they're not used to attack someone.

Second might be familiar to some, it's Lollipop Climber. He's a horse leech. I'm much more satisfied with his design now. He's a pompous vampire that sticks to all the 'classic' and strange vampire habits, like having to be invited and not being able to touch silver. He's constantly fighting with Bloodlime, Lollipop truly hates him because of the former's taste in music- Lollipop thinks vampires should only create or listen to classic orchestral! In any case, Bloodlime flexes with his big castle while Lollipop wallows in misery in his home, a pile of mud in a dirty pond.

Third one is Jambul, he's a black crazy ant (actual name of the ant). He's actually a very good scientist, if not the best in the Fruitbugs world- however his visual disability and crossed eyes make people not take him seriously. He studies storms, black holes and potatoes- the latter because he wants to create a new energy source. He's a kind person if you get to know him, but Jambul's very focused on his work, to the point he doesn't always sleep. Despite his huge hands and fingers, he's fairly dexterous, but has sometimes issues with what's around him and knock things over.

Fourth one is Quince- the original fruit is only white and fuzzy when it's not ripe, but Quince is just a young adult that could lose his fur as he gets older (but he might not get older since he's a video game character). He's a vampire moth. He works as a clothing store owner- he's affiliated with Cucumber, so Quince's products are high-quality and expensive. As a shop owner he's pretty pushy in a classic salesman manner, with sometimes peer pressure such as 'but you'd look WONDERFUL with this 999.99$ coat!'. Despite his customer pleasing attitude, he's actually kinda mean- he JUST bites people that dislike his style/products, and has the nefarious plan of 'conquering the fashion world', so that Cucumber's brans dominates the whole clothing market. He has this mean side because he was relentlessly bullied in his past, and wants to enforce a new norm to not be left out ever again. His wings were burnt by his bullies, that were initially his friends.

Fifth one is Swenson Red Grape, but he's just known as Swenson. He's a Sabethes Mosquito. He's a star that creates synth music, which is like our world's 80s lyrical music. Swenson composes and writes all his lyrics by himself, and he has few bodyguards and managers- because he dislikes using people and... He didn't actually want to be a star! He just started music in his room, and was peer pressured to do a concert because he was 'talented'. From there he got much more success than he ever wished for, due to the fact that his music is unique in the Fruitbugs world. As a result he's infamous for not being open to fans and paparazzis- he's actually downright cold/dismissive. He often dreams of 'escaping to the countryside' where no one knows his name. He wants to be seen as a person rather than a star/music creating machine.

Sixth one is Coast Live Acorn, Coast for short- he's a conehead mantis. He doesn't look like much of an acorn, but i tried to make him more alien than acorn-like. In any case, Coast is mean! He wants to conquer the Fruitbug world, to make everyone his servants. He believes he's the best alien in the universe, who's above any planet's lifeforms. To achieve his plan, he destroys buildings to rebuild them to his liking. This more annoying than anything for NPCS and other fruitbugs, who have to redecorate their homes from scratch and put away the Coast-shaped furniture.

Seventh is Hawthorne Wildflower, who's a common cricket. He's still the same as before in terms of personality. But i added the fact that he's very caring if you get close to him- he'll craft things for you and bring you... 'Gifts' (animals with 1HP so you can kill them and gain EXP).

Eighth is Criollo Cocoa, he's an unicorn mantis. Like Cocoa, Criollo creates chocolate- except his is very fancy and not poisoned. It's expensive too. He's very snobbish and believes he's above almost everyone, safe for fellow 'high quality' products creators like Cucumber. Criollo also says he's above eating his own chocolate, but occasionally during fancy parties, he'll take one or two without anyone noticing. Deep down he wishes he had more real friends, but he has too much issues interacting with 'regular' people. Except for Nacional Cocoa.

Ninth is said Nacional Cocoa! He's a yellow orchid mantis. He's a mime that loves to perform as the most dramatically sad man in the world. In reality, he's actually sad, but prefers to not let anyone know. The only things that bring him a smile are Criollo and making others laugh with his mime antics. Few people seem to like him though, because of his association with white chocolate that makes people irrationally angry in the fruitbugs world (for no real reason other than taste).

Tenth is Blood Peach, he's a question mark butterfly. He's a knight that works for Nectarine (that i need to update/redesign), and the two actually are in a close platonic relationship with. Blood Peach would do anything for his partner, and like the latter, Blood is no stranger in sending meat eating butterflies to eat his ennemies' flesh. Though he does prefers to fight 'fairly' with his sword if the other person has a weapon.

Eleventh is Peanut, he's a mole cricket. He lives in the Desert level, in an area is like the underground from pkmn Diamond/Pearl. The players must help him extract cool rocks via a minigame that's like fossil extraction from Spectrobs. Don't get him crystals/gems, he thinks those are overrated, he's a 'regular' rock-based geologist. Peanut rarely uses tools to dig, because his claws are efficient and his body is actually half mechanized, hence the smoke pipes coming out of certain parts of him. As a result, he has much more stamina than most people and can dig for hours on end.

Last one is Medlar, he's a girafe weevil. He looks like he has a mascot head on, but that's his actual face- he can emote but chooses not to. He used to work at an amusement park, where he was a mascot that took pictures with people and generally brought joy to the park. But it closed due to financial reasons, and it was left to rot. Medlar, knowing nothing besides how to be a mascot, also was left to rot. He still roams the park, hoping a visitor will come and enjoy the rides, and even take a picture with him to make him feel whole again. Even during the better days of the park, Medlar was obsessed with how people see him- partially because that would be bad rep for the structure, but also because he has zero confidence and relies on people to feel loved and worthy. He does not actually know who he is outside his role as a mascot.
