Trigun Stampede Character Thoughts: Vash

I've been putting off this write-up since I finished the show if for no other reason than whenever I go to analyze this funky little dude my entire brain just stalls and goes

...anyways.

Here's a quick collection of thoughts on him now that I am finally more coherent! The hardest part of this was trying to make something readable with the sheer amount of things I could say about him. Geez.

(Please note that I have only watched Trigun Stampede! As of this moment, I am starting the manga and have not seen 98 Trigun. I thought it might be interesting to compare and contrast once I've read the manga. Bear with me in the meantime!)

Right off the bat, the show introduces us to who Vash is as a character - a pacifistic gunman who, while incredibly skilled, avoids confrontation when at all possible. When Meryl accuses him of running away out of fear, it's pretty quickly made apparent that, while it is out of some semblance of fear, it is not fear for himself. Rather, his concerns lie with other people's well-being first and foremost.

Or, really, his concerns lie near completely with other people's well-being. What happens to him is of very little consequence if it means everyone else is okay.

I want to talk about three different things when it comes to Vash, namely:

His incredible skill and competence

His terrible self-image

His solidly held pacifistic convictions

Skill and Competence

Ohhhh ok. So, I can't really comment on exact positions or maneuvers (I used to do martial arts pretty extensively, but it's obviously not the same kind and I know absolutely nothing about guns or marksmanship sorry), but I can sure tell you that I loved the way the animators had Vash move in episode 1 right before he pulls out his gun for the first time. I wish I knew how to make gifs properly because I would totally make one of that part. Even before Roberto's line that "acting brave is foolish" and "he's not long for this world" had finished, I was already convinced of the exact opposite. As someone who's done martial arts. Guys. The way he moves here.

It's a three step movement - he steps to the right, then to the left in an almost meandering way, shifting his body weight as he goes, before he grounds himself in a wide stance. It's slow, fluid, and calculated - a distinct contrast from his often jerky, exaggerated motions that we saw earlier. God I wish I had a gif. I don't think I can simply explain how insane it makes me. The animators could've just had him approach directly or run up to it - a lot of the times, with action heroes, there's a lot of flashy motion or jumping around, etc., which looks cool but isn't exactly something to be role modelling in an actual fight lol. But here? In the next episode, Nebraska mockingly says "this isn't the ballet" with regards to the dodging and spinning Vash does, but a lot of his motions... really are dance-like. He's damn near effortlessly shifting his center of gravity while remaining fluid in motion and completely balanced. No novice moves like that. He clearly has a lot of experience. For me watching, Roberto's line was refuted before he even finished it.

...which of course makes it even funnier when he realizes he's out of bullets. Oh, buddy. You looked so cool for a second there. Hjhdfnv

Really though, pay attention to the way he moves while fighting or shooting. He's always well-grounded, and the more serious the situation, the more fluidly and less exaggeratedly he moves. It's so, so cool. I don't know if I've quite seen that kind of motion in animation before, especially cgi (though it is possible I just haven't seen enough too...hehe...).

The episode 12 fight too! Again, Vash is balanced, even as he's being knocked backwards. He falls correctly, and allows his body to move with the gun. All his motions are precise and fluid. Contrast that to Nai, who is, uh... totally unbalanced lmao.

And then the way he tucks before he jumps out the window! The animation actually convinced me of this guy's over 100 years of experience. I actually believe it.

What's nice is that Vash, too, is aware of his own skill. He moves with a lot of confidence, and he clearly has a great degree of trust in his own ability to fight and shoot without seriously harming anyone - not once does he show the slightest bit of doubt in his abilities. One might expect, given Vash's refusal to kill, that he might be worried about accidental injuries when in the middle of a gunfight - but he isn't. Ever. The only way I can interpret this is complete confidence in his own abilities, and he most likely trained hard to specifically ensure that this would never be a concern. The trope of "character who doesn't want to fight or hurt people turns out to be really insanely skilled/strong" is always cool and fun, but in this context it's really a neat take on it, since I feel it is only because he refuses to kill that he intentionally developed such god-tier level marksmanship - I am going to go out on a limb here and assume it is much easier to accidentally inflict serious injury with a gun than it is to actively avoid doing so lol. He probably worked at being a really good fighter and gunman specifically so he could avoid killing.

I also find it kind of refreshing that he never calls his skills into question, since that does tend to happen with characters who have a poor self-image or low esteem. Which, uh, takes me to the next point.

Self-Image

Yeah, Vash's self-image is kind of in the gutter. He places the blame for all the tragedies that follow him on himself, despite the fact that he always puts in his full effort to prevent them from happening.

The majority of this ties back to his feelings of culpability for the fall. I want to direct your attention to the scene where Vash is digging the tally marks into the wall in episode 8 - it can't possibly be the number of days that have passed since we see the transition of the sun only twice and Brad looks shocked when he sees the all the tallies (which he wouldn't be if they had been there for that many days). With the way Vash's tallies look a bit like crosses and the fact that he greeted the people in cryosleep on Ship 5 by name in the first episode, suffice to say, he is probably making a tally of all the people who didn't make it through the crash - people whose deaths he feels personally responsible for.

Really, I wouldn't consider Vash even remotely responsible for any of that - he had the access codes but like. Zero intent or knowledge of what Nai was about to do with them. Regardless, Vash carries the guilt from it in the way Nai won't, because in his mind, someone needs to take accountability. Also important to remember is that the only reason any human being still lives on No Man's Land is because of Rem's sacrifice. Vash needs to maintain his belief in the capacity for human kindness and his no-killing code, because if he doesn't, her sacrifice would be in vain. He keeps her values and beliefs alive. She's in everything he does. Even hollowed out and stripped of his memories and identity, the mass of roots and flowers that engulf July take on her likeness.

So, really, in addition to Vash just being a generally compassionate soul, his staunch pacifism is a refusal to betray her beliefs and let his mother figure die a second time. I need to fucking lie down.

With all this strain he puts on himself, it's really not surprising that when tragedy inevitably strikes, he is very hard on himself, and from what we've seen this actually manifests in a set of consistent self-punishing behaviours - I am of course referring to episode 3's "I don't deserve to cry" and his refusal to eat in episode 4 (despite apparently needing to, unlike Nai). This is very similar to what we see in episode 8 with him as a kid, where he goes somewhat blank (no crying, no anger, all his negativity directed inwards and at himself) and refusing all food except what little he needs to survive because "it's a waste".

The worst part of this though, to me, is that we see from certain throwaway bits ("one bullet is two slices of pizza/two dozen donuts!", his kid self's eagerness at the sight of the birthday cake and the spread of food, his first question on seeing the geranium being to wonder if it is edible) that he not only needs to eat but also seems to enjoy eating - so his refusal to eat is not only a denial of a basic necessity but also of one of the few things he genuinely likes that he will allow himself to partake in. In the context of Rem framing food as something to share with everyone, it also makes me wonder if his self-denial is something along the lines of "I don't deserve to share this with them". In that sense, it's really important that Luida echoes a similar sentiment as Rem (implying she wants to share this food/include him, and that some of Rem's views survive in these remaining people).

I do wonder if, because food is associated with sharing to him, that it has something to do with needing to "earn a place at the table" in a way. While I think Luida was trying her best to juggle a lot on Ship 3 behind the scenes after the fall and clearly didn't want to keep Vash locked up like that, the crew only started treating him better and trusting him after he found a way to help them. The unfortunate view that Vash receives then is: "I need to earn their trust by being helpful." Vash is a chronic people pleaser - I can't think of a single point where he does something solely for his own benefit. He has no desire to scare or harm anyone (quite the opposite!) so he goes out of his way to be as helpful and non-threatening as possible - hiding his true nature as a Plant (to such an extent that he doesn't know anything about his powers and has effectively sealed them away - he's practically human), masking his facial expressions by cleverly hiding his face or letting the light reflect off his glasses, trying to laugh off his competence as luck and his scars as embarrassing.

Is it because he doesn't want to scare people? Is it because he doesn't want to feel othered from them? It's hard to say. It's probably a bit of both.

Nai accuses Vash of loneliness and desiring love, and of seeking to fill that gap by appeasing humans. While I don't think this is necessarily wrong, it can't possibly be accurate as a core motivation, since Vash doesn't seem to really... accept a lot of positive interaction. Whether out of concern for others' safety, a lack of feeling like he deserves it, being secretive about his past and identity, or some combination of the above, Vash tends to leave a lot. He leaves Jeneora Rock's celebration early, tries to walk away from Meryl even as she's calling out to him, runs away from Home when Brad and Luida listen to the recording. He throws walls up and distances himself by laughing things off, or smiling, or simply not explaining anything.

I mentioned this during my live blogging while watching episode 9, but as Independents, it's intriguing to me that both Vash and Nai exist outside the cycle of dependence we see between the Plants and the humans - both of which cannot survive without the other. Nai appears to revel in this detachment, but Vash also seems to self-impose a certain distance between himself and everyone else - for all his friendliness and inability to leave someone hanging who needs help, he practices a lot of recognizably avoidant strategies. He exists on the periphery, never staying in one place too long (he can't), and treating every interaction with a certain kind of resignation - an understanding that it is temporary. He seems to expect the inevitability of being chased out over and over. The slightest of kindnesses given to him he always feels incredibly grateful for. Perhaps he feels that kindness is more than he deserves.

I honestly dread to think how he'll react once he regains his memories of what happened to July. I trust that he'll keep pushing on, as he always does, but is he going to remember that he deserves to eat and smile?

I really hope so. Otherwise I will need Meryl and Wolfwood to bonk him on the head.

Pacifism and Conviction

The thing about Vash's pacifism is that it's very difficult to tell whether it is primarily motivated by love or guilt. Vash carries an incredible amount of survivor's guilt with him and he absolutely is doing his best to keep Rem's memory alive, but I don't think it can be denied that he isn't just acting out Rem's beliefs - he really does believe in them himself. He's also genuinely compassionate and does care and become invested in the well-being of others. In the end, I'm not sure it really matters. I don't think the guilt or love can be easily extricated from each other at this point; they are both powerful drivers of his actions and core to his identity as a person, and while this is not exactly ideal for getting him to be kind to himself, they both strongly feed into his continuous choice to be kind to others.

And it is a choice, not naivety, as pacifism is so often brushed off as. Vash's compassion is something he chooses over and over again, in spite of the way he is often treated, and the way his powers hold far more potential for destruction than even Knives. Wolfwood thinks that Vash doesn't understand harsh realities and is going to receive a rude awakening but he does understand - Vash just chooses not to accept violence as the only way forward and believes that things can change and improve, and is willing to expend that energy and extra hurt into making that a reality. Nai thinks Vash is helpless and brainwashed into his belief - note the way Vash frequently appears as his child self when Nai tampers with his Gate or his memories; the implication here is that Nai sees Vash as incapable of making choices for himself and in need of protection - but not only is this horribly demeaning to Vash's personhood, it simply isn't true. Even Meryl chews him out for what looked like running away to her early on, and Roberto thinks he's going to get himself killed sooner or later. Everyone underestimates Vash, at least at first. And well, it's easy to. He's just a silly little guy! He's a bleeding heart who tries to help everyone he comes across! He talks about nobody needing to die in a world where most everyone is starving and desperate! To the people in-universe, he would look like a total fool, and far too idealistic to last long.

Except, he has. He's around 150 years old, he's scarred to hell and back, but he's still alive and he still chooses kindness. That takes a special kind of improbable mental resilience and stubborn conviction - and that's what most of the other characters overlook. Vash is, indeed, very sensitive and emotional and an idealist - he's also much tougher and more rational than hardly anyone gives him credit for. He's an excellent judge of character too!

His ideals and that stubborn faith are everything that makes Vash who he is.

This scene in episode 12 is the only true moment of triumph in what is otherwise a tragedy all around. Nai would go as far as to destroy Vash’s very identity to get his brother back, but at the cost of losing everything that makes him Vash. These ideals are the core of “Vash the Stampede”, and no matter how foolish they may seem or how little others understand his conviction, this is an identity he has chosen for himself. It’s who he is. And this assertion, coming directly on the heels of Nai trying to erase him and remove that autonomy, is an undeniable brief triumph in the midst of it all. Nai will always be Vash’s brother, and he will always love him I’m sure, but they diverged in their persons a long, long time ago, and Vash adamantly refuses to be an extension of or accomplice to his brother’s crusade of hatred… even if that means going against him.

Vash’s kindness is so necessary to a world like the one we see in the series, on the verge of extinction and giving up. Approaching situations with understanding and communication is really the only way to help improve understanding amongst others - and this is one of his biggest strengths; it's even reflected in his use of his Plant abilities (communicating between himself and the other Plants, the way he can open a path both to and from the higher dimension unlike anyone else). In this way, Vash is something of a necessary conduit. I just wish he'd let himself feel a little more tbh. He represses a lot - he canonically won't allow himself to cry if he feels responsible, any flashes of anger are brief, he doesn't stick around to have fun really. Personally, I'd like to see him allow himself grief through tears, a little bit of genuine letting loose and celebrating, and actually expressing things like irritation and annoyance next season. Perhaps that's wishful thinking.

I don't know how to accurately summarize my thoughts on Vash well enough other than to say, in keeping with the whole Plant thing, he reminds me strongly of dandelions. Bright, cheery, grow through cracks and root where you don't expect them to ever be able to eke out a living. Regarded as a weed by many but very difficult to get rid of. Hardy, resilient, and pop back up after being beaten down. Kids make wishes on them.

I saw your post about offering advice for trans folks and had a question! Any tips for dressing more masc while still having good style? So many of the tips I see lead to the most boring white bread styles. You look like the expert in Not doing that

masculine fashion is super fun, i am very flattered that you asked, so here are some tips

a lot of people i think assume that "masculine" means it needs to blend in and be bland, but if you take a look at a broader variety of men's clothing, you can see that there are a lot of very fun styles. it depends on where you live in the world and what you have access to of course, but i highly recommend checking out thrift stores if they are accessible to you because they will give you a good idea of a broad range of masculine styles to choose from

there are so many different styles and cuts of clothing. especially when it comes to men's jeans. men's shoes can also vary surprisingly wildly and and shoes can make a big different in an outfit. it's good to look and see what styles appeal to you

a lot of ppl gravitate toward very bland, plain button ups with maybe a simple necklace, or just a v neck or something, but i've found that there are loads of fun and even flamboyant styles when it comes to men's streetwear. you can find all kinds of modern fashions that prioritize bright funky colors.

keep in mind that "masculine" in the modern era generally refers to the cut of a particular garment. generally angular, square, straight lines, etc, no flare or flourish or much dangling cloth. clothes that prioritize a bulky chest and upper arms. no frills design, but the patterns and colors however you can absolutely go nuts with.

i think people often forget that scarves are a great accessory and men's scarves can slap super hard. big dress coats and trench coats are also genuinely very cool. overalls and coveralls are also very slept on and i think that's a shame.

you can do a lot with hats, i recommend seeing if a particular hat type calls out to you and see if you like it. a lot of dudes i know had 1 particular style of hat they'd wear all the time and idk sometimes you're just the hat guy LMAO i was when i was younger. no wait i still am

vests are absolutely delightful. i own several, you can find them premade or literally make your own out of an old jacket. vests can be very masculine and make an otherwise femme outfit have an edgier masc look instantly.

also consider that the wilder the pattern on something, the more it visually distracts from the shape of the body underneath, so it's worth trying out. useful tip in hiding one's chest.

POV: Patrolling your (and your partner/friend whatever)'s pizzeria and meeting Music Man

Under the cut! Your companion is barely mentioned but still, you meet the original music fella! Turns out he's got a human's personality and he seems to like you!

Somehow, the pizzeria you and your partner run has been gaining traction in less than a week. Sometimes, your partner in the office seems to be struggling, in various intensities, but you had a more chill job. You merely watched over the main party area at night and would check up on all animatronics and equipment to make sure everything was in proper working order.

Recently, you made a new purchase (partly against your partner's wishes; they weren't a fan of the thing). A new sort of animatronic. No normal animal species either. It's name is Music Man.

A clown-looking cymbal player with spider legs that would accept song requests, singing them in a wobbly, multi-toned voice with beats from cymbals. Your partner and many guests grimaced at the machine, but you felt pretty drawn to it. You weren't scared. Instead, you digged that look. This dude was funky in a good way.

Tonight, you examine his powered down body up close, inspecting his joints, motor, wires, etc. Unlike your partner, you had no problem getting up close and personal with this character. In fact, not yet have you been able to request a song for him to sing. You debated powering him on to do just that, but then decided against it, as you didn't want to irritate your already stressed out coworker.

You turn and walk away after checking up on his current state, only to pause in place as the subtle pang of cymbals clinking against each other gently reverberates in the open area. You turn your head around slowly, nervous, and you only see Music Man in his usual position with his cymbals held apart. But you were too curious. You approached him once again and began to investigate the instruments, soon seeing just how tightly he held onto them. As you experimented with prying open his fingers, one suddenly opened and pinned your own finger down against the handle of the cymbal.

You yelped in fear. Though you were able to remove your finger quickly without struggle, you stumbled backwards a good few steps. Your reaction was so pitiful in fact, that it prompted another strange noise from the animatronic.

"Sorryyy...I'm afraid I just couldn't help myself-"

A quiet, warbled whisper came from Music Man's speaker on his chest. You were stunned. You knew you had shut this guy off earlier when the restaurant closed.

"What-" you muttered aloud.

He turned his head slightly to look directly at you, before performing a calm, barely noticeable shrug.

"I'm sorry for scaring you. I just wanted some...entertainment. it's dull and lonely in here at night."

He spoke with calm happiness, as if he held back a small chuckle. His legs began to bend outwards as his entire body lowered. He gently placed his cymbals on the floor as to not make much noise, before rising up once again and holding his open hands up, palms outward and fingers outspread to show he is unarmed and means no harm.

"Don't get so scared of me now, after you've shown me such love, especially in front of other guests!" He laughed.

You shook your head, glancing all over him. Since when did he act like he had his own soul? Like he was a living being? Never had he acted like this during the day.

"I'm sorry...? How long have you been able to act like this?"

"Like what, hm? Like someone with personality and feelings?" He rose one of his eyebrows and lowered his hands to his sides. "Is it really that unusual with technology these days? Is it not the niftiest thing?" He punctuated this with his arms outstretched and legs rising up and down, moving his entire body with them.

You spread your own arms out as to gesture to his entire self. "I mean- it's...cool I guess- it..just...I wasn't expecting it??"

Now, you were questioning yourself and whether your initial reaction to what he did was called for or not. He seemed friendly enough after all. For now.

He lowered himself again with multiple creaks of metal, picked up his cymbals, and returned to his usual posture while taking a few subtle steps towards you. His steps were as light and careful as his other movements, and since you did in fact fancy him in a way, you stood your ground and simply kept close eye on him as he moved ever so closer to you.

"Well...Now that you're expecting it, perhaps we can start over?"

He moves a cymbal to his other hand to hold them both in one grasp, lowers his head, and tips his hat to you before looking back at you with that ginormous grin he always sported.

"Hello there! My name is Music Man, and I'm your resident singer and musician! Unlike the animals, I'm a one-man band, and I aim to help your ratings skyrocket!" He then quickly gripped both cymbals in each hand and held them upwards to the ceiling, his entire body rising as high as it could, all to demonstrate every ounce of energy and confidence he had.

Now, you couldn't hide how your lips cracked into a half-grin. Now HE was entertaining. His personality paired with his unique voice was surely a combo.

"Hi Music man, I'm (y/n), and, uh..." what could you even say? You were still partially shocked at how expressive and lifelike he was. Best to play along, you assumed, in case it was merely more programmed stuff. "And I hope things go well between us-"

He wouldn't hurt you, right? Cause that would surely sour any potential friendship you two started.

He lowered to his normal height and spoke just as normally to you as any average person would.

"Well, I remember overhearing you say that you hated sudden loud sounds. And that you savored your peace and quiet. Is that right?"

That was definitely true. You nodded. He, in turn, nodded back, and you heard his voice lower in pitch ever-so-slightly.

"Then I'm sure we'll get along just fine~"

You know what. Rundown of my killjoy ocs becuase I don’t i ocpost enough

Ignition Wizard-

He/it, transmasc, my self insert. Zoneborn but never really had a crew, host of the radio station Lucky 107.7 , which he broadcasts from the bus he lives out of, always on the move, in zone two one day and six the next. Just a funky dude. Will give you free tattoos if you ask.

Cal-e Condor

Agender they/it amab. Ummm gay weirdo, wacky name, you just say it like Cali as in California Condor. Cowboy. Has twin bedazzled blasters and carrys daggers. Wears a crazy tasseled leather jacket with a thunderbird painted across the back. Lots of piercings and tattoos, currently has braids down to their fucking knees. Hottest mf in the zones honestly. Lone wolf, no crew but lots of friends, really outgoing and bold/flamboyant but simultaneously quiet and mysterious? Absolutely fucks on the dance floor. Engineer.

Virtuoso Viper

Comes off as an asshole but is actually cool. He/xe dirtbag transmasc. Lowkey Condor’s homoerotic rival. Cocky bastard of a motorbike racer. He has a crush on Kobra Kid and it’s kind of pathetic. Can fly a plane, at least he claims he can. There’s no planes in the zones. He wants to build one. Sings and plays guitar in a little folk punk band with his best friend. He can often be spotted hanging out at the tip of that one old radio tower by the Nest(it’s the tallest one in the zones), he loves to climb but really needs to stop before he falls and breaks something. Also he has orange hair but a key lime green blaster it’s so fucking ugly. He has zero style. At least he’s confident.

Mold Moth

He/she amab but not cis. Nobody is cis. Um. Biggest faggot in the zones. He idiolized Mad Gear so hard he became a younger, nastier version of him. Like Mad Gears a crazy guy but Mold is fucking batshit, like something is actually seriously wrong with him but whatever, he’s cool. He’s fueled by anger issues and gay sex and dreams of being the main character in 80s horror films because he thinks it’d be fun. He named his band Mold Moth and the Rot in Your Hole and his music kind of sucks but in a sexy way. He wants to eat button batteries so bad, like by the handful like mnms. Fucking Freak(affectionate)

Miss Lithium

Dommy mommy. Who said that. Genderless giant. She/they/he/it/fucking anything they don’t care. Over six feet tall. Badass, goth, etc. DJs sometimes, can build bombs. Smokes weed and fucks. Not in a crew, lives with Prince Computer and they’re technically dating but the relationship is open. Is secretly scared of death.

Prince Computer

No one actually calls him that, sure it’s his name but one day he saw the word smorzando written on some sheet music and was like that would be a cool name.. and now he’s stuck with it. He doomed himself, his girlfriend won’t call him anything but Smorz. (S’mores). It’s cute. He/it, Fun Ghoul coded, as in he’s a dog of a guy, fucking puppy ass mf, assigned bottom by literally everyone and they’re not wrong. Kind of a slut, flirts with everybody, is a medic. Writes fucking angsty poetry he’s absolutely pathetic I love him. The most little meow meow out of my ocs.

Saint Silica

Haven’t decided much about this oc yet but they’re doomed by the narrative basically. What I do know is they’re cool and people are scared of them because they’re like, literally ghostly in a way. they have a scary aura about them, but they’re actually really gentle and troubled, don’t like violence but hate bli so they fight anyway. I think they’ve just been touched by the Witch. But they’re lonely and scared of losing their purpose. Basically they’re just a really fucking cool name that I’m still trying to come up with a crazy story for that lives up to it

so ! you got all these funky lil like. kemonomimi (and some that are just full-on furries at this point ksdghds. hung my woof woof) so thats fun <3 anyway. the story involves you, a 14 year old (yes. amiya is 14.), and a cast of very funky lil dudes (gn) all going thru a world that seems to be kinda like. for lack of a better term. apocalyptic? like. cities literally have to walk around otherwise they get merk'd by giant natural disasters. also there's these funky rocks that make people get sick and slowly die (my favorite character, eyjafjalla, is partially deaf/blind due to being more infected than most operators bc she didn't seek treatment for a long time </3) so its kinda like a disease more than anything bc even if you come in contact with the funky rocks you aren't guaranteed to be infected

anyway! the game plays as a tower defense game, you have multiple classes of operators (tanks, healers, rangers, casters, guards, people who can slow enemies, people who have a short redeploy time you can just throw them around the map all willy-nilly, etc.) also don't let the name 'guard' confuse you those are guys that are basically just Stronk Melee Dudes (some do arts (the magic) damage tho) and the tanks are called defenders...... it confuses me sometimes i must admit also. gacha system. rip. arknights is a lil Mean in terms of currency so u definitely wanna save if u can. pull on the beginner banner twice tho once you start it'll help ya immensely <3

anyway ! there's like. a fuckton of characters. some of them are kinda niche, some of them took the meta and exploded it (eyjafjalla eyjalter and exusiai im looking at you), and a lot are just general all-rounders <3

anyway stan eyjafjalla the only sheepie you'll need (if you ever get her she's a 6* and i just got lucky </3)

ooooohh that sounds cool I'll download it and give a spin tmrw methinks o7 idk how long I'll survive on it but sounds good fun hehe :3

Oof, difficult question. I'm gonna have to go with Melkor and Mairon because they're quite entertaining. Just funky little dudes with cool trivia and hot tea to spill (huge eye, sneaking around in Valinor, etc). Chatting about life and satanic rebellion. Pure and utter crack.

What blorbo would you be most likely to actually enjoy hanging out with?

Eönwë and/or Nienna. Eönwë just seems like a cool and sweet guy and I want to pet his wings. Nienna, well, she's the lady of mercy and compassion and hanging out with her would probably be the best mental health boost in the world.

Only ones that fit his specific brand. Persian but not Meowth (heresy), Glameow but not Purugly. Flareon because of its vibes. Gardevoir, not Gallade. None are trained especially well.

Oh and DEFINITELY Purrloin/Liepard.

Probably more practical ones, like Pokemon that could help him with his chores or jobs. So Timbur, Mudsdale, mon like that. But also Cubone for reasons :)

So I guess he'd prefer rock/ground or normals types

She basically becomes a horse girl (like she isn't?) Rapidash, Mudsdale (probs her first), Zebstrika. All of which she raised up from little babies. And to round it out she'd have a flying type to get her around.

He's the type of guy who would have like six of the same Pokemon because aesthetics and/or he loves them. Probably Dreepy or something.

He'd probably be that one guy who keeps all his Pokemon at their first evolutions. So Pichu, Ralts, Skitty. And/or he'd have every single evee evolution to be fancy.

I was gonna make this joke with Lokeira but then I realised Ettia would genuinely have a Sylveon so... Trans Pokemon for trans trainer.

It is 12:30 in October 28th, and I just finished watching the fnaf movie and, as routine, I feel an urge to infodump :)

SPOILERS FOR FNAF MOVIE UNDER CUT!!!! Everyone who also watched it remember to correctly tag so that ppl can block it!!!

Really recommend to watch first cause it was nice to watch :) even if not PEAK storytelling IMO IMO IN MY FIRST IMPRESSION OPINION DONT JUMP ME

Ok so it was odd??? A lot of the lore kinda got messed up in translation, but I can’t help but feel so grateful anyways???

Ngl I would’ve probs shit on the movie if it wasn’t for my friend who, in a convo, mentioned how sad he was that everyone hated the red eyes cause “we’ve been waiting so long, why does it matter they got red eyes?”

Bc of this I gave it a shot, and it was not bad.

I was scared of how it’d turn out just bc the fnaf lore is SO much that even SCOTT HIMSELF doesn’t know where we at, but for the amount of info they were dealing with, they decided to kinda maneuver in their own iteration of it (imo) which wasn’t completely hate-able and I think it was a pretty good course of action

I liked references to the og lore (

- how foxy is the most OUT TO GETCHA

- the afton death scene was PEAK IMOOO “I always come back” like mk girll 💅

- also the whole set was actually fire

Also also the effort put into the ACTUAL ANIMATRONICS, I was actually so shocked I was so ready to just accept it was all gonna be sfx and green ppl but they actually BUILT it, and that materialization just made it that much better for me like watching it and realizing wo man this is insanee

Just thinking how it was such a tiny project and then it just BOOM and here we are???? Omaiga. It rlly motivates u to get out there, no?

I loved them pushing the boundaries of where the animatronics could go w golden Freddy, even if he got me SO confused lore wise like wait y r u here? same for the weird kill freddy mask like hello???

IT MADE ME SO HAPPY HAVING THE TOMBSTONE SONG THEREEEEE YIPEEEEE

Music wise it was so cool too like it was pretty preppy and happy like kids parties and even in normal scenes (e.g. him picking up sleeping pills) it kept the mood up

I didn’t like the career dude being afton, but he was suspicious and i knew smth was gonna happen so ig not out of the blue, but I do like how it kinda went full circle

I am still confused abt Vanessa, but not overly so it’s ok

I actually cried when Abby and the animatronics became friends I was so happy, it got taken away but alas it is fnaf :)

We love the undiagnosed PTSD of the characters

I was bummed when it didn’t close out w the scene where the animatronic heads where no longer have a light behind them (meaning they’ve moved on) I honestly think it would’ve been such a COOL way to close it out but I was not the producer and maybe they plan to continue it??? Continue the curse of too much lore??? That’d be hilarious actually

I’m sad abt how dirty michael gets done through most of the movie like hes just doing his best stopppp

ough it's a lot of magolor light novel scenes tbh bc i love getting the extra storytelling through the text...

everything we've seen of the merry magoland light novel so far tbh (spoilers for light novel ch1-4) - him waving excitedly when the lor starcutter shows up like 'lor!! lor!!! look at me i made an amusement park!!!' or going undercover to find out what the dream team really thinks about him and getting hit emotionally by kirby agreeing to be his friend and meta knight calling him lonely...

also him getting annoyed that the lor won't talk to him in the rtdl novel bc his vibes are atrocious... poor guy is so interested in ancient technology and the technology he finds doesn't even like him

in the dreamy gear light novel, i think it was meta knight and daroach? but when they broke into that guy's place to steal the documents about the machine they needed the gears from, that was p fun

in terms of canon scenes:

you thought i was going to talk about magolor huh, WELL actually this is a kracko fanblog now. look at this funky little cloud guy he fights kirby in practically every game bc he will never let go of a grudge and also he summons waddle doos hkjdfs

jk i still want to talk about magolor >:3c (rtdl and magolor epilogue spoilers incoming)

ok so magolor is the antagonist in rtdl/rtdldx, you start off seeing him crash land his ship and kirby offers to help him collect the ship parts, then he lies to kirby about his crown getting stolen by this dragon so kirby steals it for him + he attempts to use it to gain power and take over the world. master crown corrupts him, kirby kicks his and the crown's ass, he falls through a portal to hell and loses his powers. magolor epilogue happens, he kinda redeems himself by defeating the crown, then jumps into the universe of a previously non-canon kirby game and does microtransactions for a while until he has enough funds to make an amusement park for kirby as an apology

he's my favorite for many reasons!!! first of all bc i was talking about character design and personality in the last ask i'll start with that, wizards and wizard-y designs are great, also he's got little kitty cat ears and his hood looks very comfy... then ofc he's a very silly little guy, he has a fun way of talking (in jp he uses mixes in a lot of katakana which the devs refer to as 'magolorese', this was localized to having him use some slang like calling kirby a 'cool dude' and being like 'high five, low five, all that' etc chill phrases), his animations are really fun (like giggling after blasting enemies with a giant energy beam or spinning in the magolor races), etc - and i like characters that are mischievous or twist villains too ^^

i have so many thoughts about him. first of all i love that his two main goals are like a) build an amusement park and b) world domination. i kinda interpret it as him just wanting to have some sort of power and control, whether it's in a positive or negative way, he's just got a big ego i think hjkdfs. and then even in his amusement park it's filled with bombs and shurikens and etc dangerous things ^^;; anyway more series should have their villains redeemed and start amusement parks i think

also love how his master plan is working perfectly and then. oh fuck it's controlling him now, local wizard fucks around and finds out immediately (and the pause screens even reflect this like throughout all the phases/variations of his final boss they go from 'stop magolor he's an evil liar' to 'the master crown is amplifying the darkness in his heart... save the world and save a new friend, too' - like look at these two from true arena 🥺), lots of angst potential too for true arena where 1) that's the one where the bgm has him crying for help and 2) when you defeat him the crown stays on his head when he gets sucked into a portal so it's implied he's stuck corrupted by the crown in another dimension forever ;-;

he's also very silly in the light novels, people don't really like them bc they paint him in a very negative light but sneaky con artist magolor is also very fun (i mean i'm a redd animal crossing stan this should come as no surprise hkjdfs)

also i haven't read any of the mangas yet but from what i've seen they also have some fun portrayals of him

in conclusion: sneaky egg wizard good

tbh i don't really headcanon characters stuff very often!! unless i'm hardcore projecting on them hkjdfs but i mean. at least half of kirby characters are neurodivergent probably

claviceps sp. is a fungi any old joe mightve heard about when looking at things like st. anthonys fire, the salem witch trials, the dancing mania of europe, etc. and as fascinating as it is that this fungi mightve been the real cause for those things, so could it have been various other things bc tho the climates for at least two of these events (that i know) was optimal growth time we. just. dont. know. science aint there yet pardner

theres also a funky guy that as my dear friend ava says "SQUART" does indeed just that. by spewing its spores into the lovely food of sick-ass livestock aka crops and grass and shit, it effectively passes entirely unnoticed through the mouth of the animal where it does nothin to the creature then gets lobbed in with excrement which is: their whole goal!! by scheming their way into poop they can now have a fun growing party as they break that shit (literally) down and feast on the herbivore poop. its pretty cool theyre called pilobolus kleinii (the most common) and theyre also nicknamed "hat throwers" bc they. throw their hats hehehehe

anyways theres actually a whole genus called the aspergillus and theyre. theyre a bunch of bastards mixed with like. the dude whos in soy sauce, the guy who features in toothpastes, and especially that famous fucker in inks (specifically dark inks). theyre like the "famous amongst humans" crew and then the fuckin types that can lead to like dying of asphyxiation. so yeah. like hollywood lmao. but also theres more so idk go for it look em up.

anyways these are a few creatures i recently came to know about and if u ever wanna learn about fuckin fungi start with the phylums and ull already see some bonkers guys

Hello! do you have any tips on how you do your character/creature designs? I love all your designs so much their all so cool especially your jackalope/rabbit oc! Love them^^ I would love to hear how you come up with the designs! (I’m planning to make a game and big spooky animal creatures are a big aspect n I wanna do it as best as I can so uh yeah like I said you got any tips?👀✨)

I have been making a BUNCH of tutorials and tips about this and many other topics so check them out!

Yeah! My biggest tip is understanding Splice vs Blend techniques, <- I go into a LOT of detail on getting a cohesive creature here.

It's pretty clear visually here, but splicing is cutting and pasting animal parts together with no or minimum blending at the edges. Classic and real life genetic chimeras are splices of two organisms, and their boundary is very clear. It looks really unnatural. Hybrid animals and mixed breeds shuffle traits all over, so learn from nature to make things natural.

and then consider what traits you add and ask "how did this manage to evolve?" why do they have glowing eyes? Is it for communication? intimidation? warning of poison content?

What adaptions did they develop to best take advantage of their niche/biome? What was the process like? What did the intermediate stages look like and how did they function?

Make something cohesive, give thought to "how is it going to hold up its own weight?" how does it fight? Even rabbits have tools for fighting, and they're built for running and fleeing above all else.

How does it communicate? How would its body adapt to that?

These are all important aspects of Worldbuilding

Don't forget that animals will have instincts and behaviors, while sentient creatures will have Culture. A HUGE thing I see is people giving sentient creatures normal paws but somehow using and building tools? You gotta adapt that sort of stuff dude. They dont needs hands if you can come up with an alternate method of fine motor skills (prehensile trunk, tail, tentacles, weird teeth, an extra set of limbs just for manipulating things, etc) if your creature physically cannot hold and build a knife, they have no business wielding it.

If you cant draw them crafting something, don't draw them using it unless they got it from someone else.

But don't get too carried away with fancy digits you forget the primary purpose of limbs: locomotion and weight bearing.

Here is an unfortunate dragon where I picked my favorite traits and put them together. I also added vestigial arms for some reason and now I have to explain why they're like that. The same goes for any other Just Cause trait you wanna slap on. His name is Dinkus

he's got some problems and you can kinda feel it just looking at him, but it will help you way more to name them. Every part of your creature should influence every other part. A horse has a strong neck and strong haunches because its a domino effect. Let's make this guy hefty

Though a biped would be Possible, it would just look like a t-rex, so I brought the wings down and reverted them to load-bearing legs. But because they used to be wings with long fingers, I'm having her walk on her knuckles because shortening the bat fingers takes a Long time and if evolution finds a shortcut, it will exploit it. But that's a flightless creature so is it really a dragon?

There's dinkus turned in the other direction. I wanted them to fly and so all their adaptions are for that. I also wanted that funky head and made up a reason for it to be that way. You might automatically have this small dragon hunting lizards and rats and such, but if you consider their physiology for a moment, their diet, you just expanded your world and filled out the vulture niche without even trying.

BE CAREFUL THOUGH!

While you cant worldbuild too much, you can infodump too much. So once you have everything built, you need to ask yourself what is appropriate for your project. If it's a dramatic story, you do not need to pause the battle to describe how the buzzard-dragons that are waiting to feast evolved. Just show them off, in writing or visually, and let the audience infer how they evolved and what their behavior is like form their anatomy.

Some people (me) want to engage in the worldbuilding details and get into the nitty gritty of biology/textiles/trade/politics/culture/etc but most audiences are here to be entertained. If you have dragons instead of vultures, a few people will go THAT'S SO COOL but most of them won't even notice... consciously.

Worldbuilding makes a world more believable and immersive. By having dragons eat the dead of war, you remind the reader that this is Not earth, but rather a place that is so whole and complete you know who is going to clean up the roadkilled jackalope stinking up the cobblestone.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuutt....

If you want to create a national geographic journal (which is what I'm doing) and your audience wants it too? (or if you dont care what your audience wants you do this for YOU) Go for it! roll around in details. daydream and doodle new ones. Go crazy go stupid go have fun

OH YEAH! And the biggest tip of all is study nature!

Try to guess what developed and why. How stuff is used, and then you can turn around and put both form and function into your own creatures.

Almost forgot: I clean, document, photograph, and assemble animal skeletons/skulls as a hobby. soooooo that helps me study Real Good.

Play games, make up challenges, and then make it harder

Studying what exists is the best way to create what doesn't. Study work you like, study my work and see what choices I made and ask yourself "why did he use THAT trait?"
