"Sit down," Marty instructed Doc, pointing to the sofa.
Doc blinked. "What?"
"Sit down." Marty took a deep breath. "Please."
Emmett had no energy to protest. Somewhat hesitantly, he walked to the sofa and sat down, silently. He tried to bring some kind of order to his thoughts. He couldn't.
"Huh?"
Doc probably would have lost himself completely if a steaming cup of milk hadn't appeared in front of his nose.
"Come on." Marty pressed the cup into Doc's hands. "It helps me too when I can't calm down. You know that."
Carefully, Emmett took the cup in his hands. "Oh. Yeah-yeah, I know."
He stared at the milk in the cup, as if there was something interesting to observe there.
"You don't have to do that," he said after a bit of silence.
"What do you mean?" Marty asked, sitting down on the sofa next to his best friend.
"Well-you don't have to-"
Doc had no idea what he wanted to say.
"...take care of me, I guess."

There's a lot I want to say about NonPlatonic Forms, but one thing that struck me on a personal level was Lee's excited rant about Phantom of the Opera and how it's actually cool to see stories and ideas being remade and retold because it says so much about both the original story and about the ways the different remakes change the story or keep it the same and it's all so neat to compare them and see what each version is trying to say. I just really loved that part and wanted you to know!
Can I say how grateful I am that I like, keep putting these sections into the game that are really personal and I’m worried that people will think they’re too “the whaling chapters in Moby Dick” or “the Waterloo chapters in Les Mis” to get away with. These personal bits that are important to the characters and core to the whole thing, but even when someone’s speaking with passion, I don’t want to bore the readers, and I worry that it’s too obnoxious, too egotistical to assume that anyone would care at all.
And then you’re having a good time with it?? You get it! You get it! I put on my weird little hat and I think it looks dumb and you go

He gulped, hating how badly his hands were shaking. He might have been a brave man, but being brave when standing right in front of Alastor meant death. Bravery got you killed around people like Alastor. Bravery meant nothing in situations like these, where you know that one wrong move could be the last mistake you ever made. Yet weakness meant you were prey. Visible weakness showed him the power he had over you. But visible weakness was the only way of survival with a man like Alastor.
So Husk silently sat down across from him, ignoring the flight response that was ringing alarm bells in his head.

1, 25, 81, 94 for the fanfic ask game! <3
KOKO HELLOOOOOOO ad thank you so much for the ask 💕💗💖💞💝 i went a little wild and had to reign it back in a bit and its still pretty long so apologies in advance
(ask game we're talking about is here but i also have questions next to the answers)
1. do you know how you want the story to end when you start, or are you just stumbling through the figurative wilderness hoping to find a road?
for the vast majorty of my fics i think i have a pretty good idea of where its going to go, i think because i get the ideas of these cool scenes usually set in act 2 or 3 or i at least the vibe i want from the start and The Point is usually clear the second i put thought into it. currently the only exceptions are 1) this super secret (woooo~~~) ficlet im working on that came from a prompt so i had to spend like 3 or 4 days writing it to properly understand the direction i wanted to take it, and 2) the steve henderson au, which is fucking massive already and it's even bigger in my head stnzgns. that one you obviously know how it ends y'know, it aint the steve henderson au if steve doesnt become a Henderson, but for all the arcs i have along the way it took a while to properly figure out what i doing and how to do that and im just now figuring out what that looks like for the first major arc.
so tldr: usually i know, sometimes i gotta figure it out, but i do need to have it figured out before it can really take shape
25. what’s your revision or rewriting process like?
oof ok so i tried writing this and good fucking god explaining everything i do in editing took up so much space. so this is the short answer for convenience but if anyone wants a long answer im foaming at the mouth to talk about writing stjsnystn (the rest under the cut)
the majority of my process is editing and sometimes first drafts are literally unrecognizable from the final. a lot of how i edit line by line is intuitive/vibes based, and whole scenes/arcs/pacing/flow/theme etc etc is based on a really deconstructed thought process for storytelling, to put it as briefly as i can (because this is one of the parts that got really long) its about The Why of everything going into the story. Picking details or making decisions not based rigidly on formula or trends but instead whats best for the kind of story you want to tell (and then making sure to implement it in a way that actually does that in the story).
for small works i prefer to just change shit as i see it and not worry about doing focused passes through the work, but in the steve Henderson au i literally cannot its too fucking big smhdmyxyn so in that case i do passes that span like whole writing sessions just hyperfocused on this one thing. one of my favorite passes is in-character passes where i pick one person (often dustin bc hes a main character), rewatch them a ton to get in their headspace, and go back and make sure everything they say or do fits them as if they were the sole focus if the story. I'll also do passes to focus just on medical accuracy, passes for a specific character duos to keep their story progressing and consistent, passes for ideas that stay between the lines making sure they stay consistent and understanding how much information im conveying, character's specific mindsets that their arc is about and making sure they dont have any unintentional exceptions, literally if its a thing in the text i probably need to do a pass for it so i know its consistent
also more lighthearted stuff tends to need wayyyy less editing time and its a more balanced half solo half beta process. the easiest was the claudia henderson drabble because it was really just a backstory with an active scene or two all rooted in her outside persective.
also sometimes i just start from scratch halfway through, like mr crayola henderson has one previous half-complete version in my doc fhdlas tho i guess thats how drafts are supposed to work
and this is the tldr im sorry i dont want to cut it down any more just read this one its my favourite fdhaskl
81. if you could go back in time and give your younger self a piece of writing advice specific to you, what would it be?
honestly i wouldn't have much to tell them. i didn't start writing fanfic until july of last year?? something like that and i started with the steve henderson au. maybe don't write that one about the triggering thing lol.
actually wait no. id tell them its okay to abandon projects (and maybe tell them not to make some purchases dgnxngsyn) but ye i spent a while mourning projects because they felt like they ceased to exist, but i had several screenplay outlines that probably helped me a ton. in my writing and those experiences never leave me so their existence still had a purpose and value
tldr: dont write your very recent triggers silly goose, dont cry over abandoned art
94. do you prefer dialogue or description?
i definitely prefer dialogue, and with it action descriptions because i still think in movie-medium (tho i am getting better at understanding how the FUCK prose works and especially prose pacing oh my god why can't i just hold on an actors face for several seconds of silence gAAH!!). i like saying things without saying them, i like subtly building towards something body language until a snap, i looooove making blocking relevant in a medium where you're not even seeing the movement with your eyes, and i love getting into a characters head so far that each person has a different way to word something or a different detail they focus on or a certain tick that tells the other character whats in their head.
but i struggle with internal monologue sooooooo hard, its a practiced skill im actively working on to write a characters internal logic about something but still keeping it from being too on the nose about whats really going on. like i can do it but i struggle to fill page time with it because exploring ideas at least for me usually leads to the source and thats decidedly not where the characters going! its a tuesday afternoon! they're not unpacking shit they're trying to have a third coffee!! i also struggle finding the best words for the reader to feel the text, like idk man maybe im using the onelook dictionary wrong but it just does not get me what im looking for in under three looks zgnshnsyn
tldr: dialogue and blocking, good description is witchcraft
_
but yee thank you again for the ask dude!! this was so much fucking fun i fucking love talking about writing and the logic process behind everything. thanks anyone seeing this for actually reading this far 💕

! Tw: Blood, Violence, Abuse !
[Very self indulgent]
Styx blinked... Once, twice... Before xy slowly pushed xyrself up to xyr feet. A faint pain rippled through the entire right side of xyr body, xyr silvery white eyes cast down to the polished tile beneath xyr dew claws. Silver colored blood collected beneath xyr, and xyr eyes widened with realization... Xy was bleeding...
When did that start happening...?
Shaking, the feline hybrid raised a paw to xyr nose, wiping away a few drops of blood that had collected just beneath xyr nose... Which just leaked blood, like a broken faucet. Xyr heart hammered in xyr ears, the faint blare of what xy could only assume to be a fire alarm in the background. Then, suddenly, it was like a switch was flicked on, as the raging crackling of fire forced xyr attention up with a quickness that would give a human whiplash.
Xyr feathered tail lashes, as xy pushes xyrself to xyr feet with a stumble, eyes wide with horror and confusion as xy watched the flames rage on around xyr... Xy took a few steps back from the flames, and that's when the pain had kicked in to overdrive. Xyr paws shot up to cover xyr face, a breathless shriek escaping xyr at the searing agony that shot through the right side of xyr body, almost like xyr skin was melting right off of xyr bones, bubbling like acid. Xyr hip bumps into the reporter's desk behind xyr, and the cold marble shocks xyr back to reality, as xyr senses are quickly caught by a realization...
Where was Rayman...?

very inside baseball notes on a process!!! blame @ferusaurelius for comparing my style on that last piece to beat poetry, because: play the secret level music or whatever, thaaaaaat’s it
i am a poetry/theatre nerd at heart. i talk a lot about how language is for communication and the frills and furbelows are sort of a side alley people can explore if that’s what works for them, and i firmly do believe that!
it’s just that oh my fucking g o d is that shit my chosen side alley. i am an absolute sucker for the little details of construction. sometimes that’s not the point or wouldn’t suit the piece, so i have to set it on the back burner and concentrate on what helps me communicate best, but in my heart: i wish everything could be poetry or a goooood shakespeare monologue, just a little. oh! for that i would eat my own goddamned heart in the marketplace, & etc.
because of this tendency, i like to read everything i write aloud during editing passes and see if something sounds as good that way as it looks on the page. (and because it helps catch mistakes in a way that sneaks around the brain’s impulse to fill in or fix words, because you already know what you meant to write: if you edit your own work, one of my first and best pieces of writing advice is read it aloud to yourself at least once or twice during the process.)
that last piece about metaphors meant i got to have a lot of fun in the writing process, leaning into playing with sound clusters and alliteration and rhythm and meter. there’s sort of a fine line between marching band and sing-song that reading everything out loud really helps you hone, and even readers who aren’t conscious of why they feel compelled or some phrases hit harder get subconsciously dragged in. it’s why song lyrics/poems are often easier to remember than recited facts; our brains just like a nice rise and fall.
and since i was trying to make the point that metaphors are something we use all the time without realizing to communicate the emotional truths that plain language can’t quite master, i got to use a bunch of metaphors while i did it. that’s another fun way to sort of... use language to make your point without being like “also, here’s a waterslide of metaphors geeeeet ready they’re something we all more or less instinctively understand how to use in a very cool way, but it's rare to see them explained in layman’s terms” right out.
also, just because i think it’s fun: just say ‘what rowboats and the arms attached to the human rowing said boat’ to yourself. i am rarely more happy with my writing than i am focused on the bits i could have done better, but that one’s got a real nice mouthfeel if i do say so myself.

wrapped: 28 & 29!
28. Fuck! This is a hard one! Joining a lovely flashfic group really helped me push myself as a writer this year, especially in terms of executing ideas quickly so I’m going to say Off Season, which I wrote for the League of Their Own fandom and posted approximately 48 hours after the show aired. The inspiration was cooking and my god the GENDER of it all?? My god 29. This is so silly but I wrote a modern Witcher fic called (Jaskier’s Version) where Jaskier’s unreleased album was stolen and it had a bunch of fake tweets at the end and one of them just said:
Sorry, but are we hearing that Jaskier’s husband LEFT HIM ATOP A MOUNTAIN?
And it makes me laugh every time I see it

evidently i need to stop letting any writing slumps and planning struggles get me down. because following my worry yesterday about being unable to plan fics like i used to, i have gone from scrapping an entire fic idea/plot to suddenly having a new and improved one that i utterly love. holy moly. fear me.

19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?
I was definitely one of Those Little Kids back in nineteen-dickety, writing my little stories, rambling about stuff. I think I started writing fic when I was thirteen? Pop-punk pre-bandom stuff. Did that for a few years, then started university, and joined fandom proper (finally, I was An Adult. Goodbye, adult disguise!!). I've never had so much free time, and space to think. I wrote like a maniac in a variety of fandoms, and started developing a style, although I didn't ever think about that and consequently didn't learn much.
Finished university, burnt out on fandom (it was such hard work to keep up), and was very afraid of what it meant to be An Adult. Onto fifty years of pure adult suffering. No time for writing, fic or otherwise. That was fucking boring, although time away from fandom and writing turned out to be restorative and gave me a chance to mature.
I came back into the fandom fold in my late twenties. I wrote Spilling Over the Idol and felt way too conflicted about rejoining fandom for a while, as if I was crossing the borders into some land that might not want me. Finally remembered that I'm An Adult and can use my finite time how I want, including writing fic.
I don't have as much time or write as fast as I used to, but I'm more intentional about learning now, and better than I've ever been. It's empowering to work hard at something I love to do. In the near future I have a heap of fic WiPs in a variety of fandoms to get my hands on. And in the near-medium future I'd like to work in earnest on some original fiction, which will be a challenge, but very fulfilling, I think.
25. What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?)
Jaskier has freckles on his nose. Not a ton, but they're there, show up every summer. Best seen from close-up, in the sun, while Jaskier's smiling.
(I've mentioned this in several stories and I. Will. Not. Stop!)
Ask me some of these really fun writing questions!
