Who am I and why this blog?

What a good question, I am so glad you asked. I am a 45 year old, mother of three, who has fibromyalgia, cfs/me and arthritis. I guess I should also say that I am single as that is usually one of the first questions people ask when you meet them.

My children are aged 26 (yes, I know I was young when I had him), 20 and 18. My eldest lives in the Midlands (UK) which is where his Dad and his family are, I don’t see him very often but I have been fortunate (in some ways) to have been able to spend 2 months with him this year. I say fortunate in some ways because the reason he stayed with me for so long was because he was having a bit of a crisis and needed to get away. Thankfully while he was here he helped me almost, if not more than I helped him.

The younger two live with me in East Anglia (UK), their father (who is a different man to my eldest’s dad) lives 10 minutes away. My 20 year old is my main carer, he also helps with the 18 year old who has autism and social anxiety. My 20 year old has been my rock through the years and I don’t believe that I would be sat here today if it hadn’t been for him and his support (and yes I do make sure that he knows that he is a very amazing person, even if he doesn’t always believe it). Sadly he lost his job in the hospitality industry during the COVID-19 epidemic, as did so many others. He didn’t work full-time but I do think that it was important for him to have that outlet, where he could make friends and do things that were not related to helping me and his sister. We are trying to do thinhgs to help him rejoin the working world when the shielding is over.

As I mentioned my daughter has autism and severe social anxiety. Around Oct 2017 she had total meltdown and refused to go to school, leave the house or even go near a door that was open to the outside. She was in mainstream school before that, she is very clever and quite talented when it comes to anime drawings. Sadly we did have quite a few problems with bullying, which the school did try and help with, even getting the police involved when the situation called for it. Unfortunately, despite my asking for help several times, everything going on in the outside world just became too much for her and she put on the brakes. We have had a little bit of help and after a lot of hard work on our part we managed to get her to leave the house. She would go down to the local shop and the chip shop next door (about a 5 minute round trip), and we managed to get a volunteer to come and take her to a cat sanctuary once a week. Two weeks after she had started doing this the cattery shut its doors to all non-necessary staff and then we went into lockdown mark 1. Since then she has taken several steps backwards (although she does still do the shop trip if she has to). I have been trying to encourage her to come out of her room and she refused to speak to me for 8 weeks, she wouldn’t even look at me. We are now talking but she doesn’t come and search me out as she did before. I am sure we will be okay and once the pandemic has some solution then we will work again at getting her out there.

I started by telling you about the children because it does tie in with what I am about to say in a few. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and CFS/ME about 15 years ago, gosh that was a long road to get the diagnosis. It took about 4 more years to get my arthritis diagnosis because whenever I mentioned the pains they automatically put it down to the fibro/ME no matter how hard I tried to convince them that this pain was different. Thankfully someone eventually listened and that meant that I could learn to do things that could help. I do have other problems which impact my life slightly less than these, but we could be here a while if I went to deep into that and I am sure you don’t want that lol.

Long story short, I put on a lot of weight (about 6 stone or 84 pounds or 38.1kg), I was struggling to stay awake long enough to cook a meal and so I would just grab easy convenient snacks which we all know are not great substitutes but if I hadn’t done that then I probably wouldn’t have eaten anything. I also wasn’t moving around anywhere near as much as I used to do, I had always been doing something before and although my diet wasn’t great I was burning up a lot of those calories so while I have never been skinny I wasn’t a big girl,

Up to the present(ish), I have battled with depression and anxiety for a long time, some of it because of how I looked a lot of it because of what I couldn’t do. I forgot to focus on what I could do, what I did have. A few weeks ago I went for a short walk by the quay (all my walks are short because it hurts so much and after a short time I struggle to pick up my feet). I was watching the water, which I find very peaceful, and I saw a branch floating by on the current. I was taken by an major urge to jump in and float off with it, which I am sure you will be glad to hear I managed to resist. I thought about just getting into my car and driving until everything and everyone I knew were far behind me. I felt like they would be better without me in their lives.

Somehow I managed to get back home and I tried to figure out how I had got to this point in my life. I know I was missing my eldest, I was pleased I had managed to help him out but it had left a big hole when he went back home. While he was with me we managed to sort out my house and threw away most of the clutter, which was great I felt like things were starting to move the right way. So why had I spent weeks crying night and day? I was awful to be around, even the woman who comes in to help me with the things I struggle to do wasn’t able to help with how I was feeling.

I knew I was lonely, although I have two children living at home they spend the majority of the time in their rooms, my daughter was ignoring me (even looking at the wall when she came to a room I was in so she didn’t have to look at me). Every time I watched the television I would hear stories on how the lockdown had brought families together and how they were doing more as a family. I couldn’t relate to that at all. There was also so much talk about how people were keeping in touch over zoom or the like, I hadn’t even had one talk like that. I don’t have a lot of friends, I am not good at keeping in touch and after you have had to cancel last minute so many times people stop asking you to do things.

I hated the way I looked but I had no clue on how to change it, every time I have tried to do any exercise I have suffered for days afterwards, even having a conversation with someone would leave me drained. I had managed to lose 3 stone before the first lockdown but, after struggling to get deliveries and when I did it seemed that the things they couldn’t provide were all the healthy options I tried to get, I put back on 2 stone. My face was starting to show the ravages of time, the worst being the hooded eyes I now have. I have always liked my eyes so it is sad they are not as noticeable as they used to be.

I think I might be coming up to the menopause, my period was over two weeks late at that point (it took another week before it said hello). Any of you women out there will know that when your period is late it causes your hormones to go out of whack. Looking back I know that had something to do with how I was feeling.

I remembered something my Dad had told me, “If you can do something about it then do so, if you can’t then all the worrying in the world won’t do anything”. I decided that I had to try and do something to fix the problem areas I saw in my life. I couldn’t do much about my hormones, expecially as it is the first time in over a year that it has taken so long which means the doctor wouldn’t do anything. That meant I just had to let that one sort itself out.

I knew that if I listened to some Toby Keith or Kellie Pickler I always felt better (well Kellie does have two songs which make me cry because they cut so close to home but in a strange way even that makes me feel less alone), so I decided I was going to start listening to them, amongst others, more and if I could I would dance to them, that would at least get me started with moving. It helped because I did lose 6 pounds in the two weeks leading up to this second lockdown.

Facing another month of lockdown I wanted to do something that would help me and also stop me from worrying about the fact that I couldn’t go for a cuppa with my carer and her partner on a tuesday morning. So I decided to set myself a challenge. I want to leave lock down looking better than I did when I entered it. This meant looking for exercises that I could realisticaly do, I can’t see squats ever being a big part of any exercise routine I ever do. I found some arm exercises that could be done sitting down, then I learnt about the wall push or standing push-up, I tried it and found that I could manage that so I added that one in. I also looked at loads of videos for slimming down the stomach, the one exercise they all included was the plank. Now I didn’t think I would be able to manage that, especially getting down and back up again, but I am pretty stubborn so I figured that I would try it. The first time I thought I was going to die by the fifth second but I managed it and I am now going to try and do it as often as I can, after all no-one is about to see the crazy ways I have to use to pick myself up afterwards.

I also decided that I needed to lay down some house rules. I drew up contracts for the two children who live with me (by drew up I mean I found some templates online and adapted them to suit). Part of the contract stipulates that they need to spend some time with me while they are both home full-time. That has stopped me from feeling so isolated even though they are here. I have been making plans on what I want to do when the world returns to some sort of normality. My life has basically been on hold for the past 15 years, I don’t even know how that happened, but it did and I am determined that I am going to put myself out there when I can (I might change my mind later, but at least for now it is giving me something positive to look forward to).

I had always said that when my youngest reached 18 (which happened during the first lockdown) I was going to start travelling. This is definitely something I plan to keep to when travel plans can be a little more stable. I used to be an active member of the theatre when I was in the Midlands but I didn’t even know we had one here until last lock down. I want to look into joining them and doing some theatre stuff, that was the job I always wanted a far cry from what I ended up doing which was mechanical engineering. I have a couple more things in the “to-do” bank but they are just the ones I am going to mention for now.

I don’t want to get back to that place where I want to disappear, to keep me on track I started this blog. I want a record of where I started and how I am progressing, and it kinda gives me some sort of accountability. It also makes me write something every day which is going to help me with another dream. That, however, is a story for another time.

on to 10.16! the valentine’s episode!

fjdkfdjkfd a very worried-looking woman accepts a valentine’s bouquet and i was like, did she kill her husband and he’s lying on the floor somewhere and that’s why she looks so awkward about it? and then there’s a BLOODIED HAMMER and A BODY and i was probably right, omg, i love it.

oh! looks like she maybe called hpd herself? that’s an interesting twist.

oh my gosh, noelani is getting surfing lessons, and that alone is cute enough but then suddenly there’s a whoop and it’s tani on the beach giving vocal emotional support and I LOVE THAT. after a very, very long draught, this season is so good for us when it comes to female friendships.

lou is mad that adam put his niece’s life at risk, and that’s fair, but maybe... also be mad at adam for doing crimes? like, that’s bad? maybe?

fjdkfd we ended the last episode with danny and steve in the kitchen and that’s also their first appearance in this one. this is beautiful.

steve: “i do have a date, indeed.” danny: “with who?” steve: “a lady.” LISTEN, i am taking this as the “a lady” part being not just an evasive maneuver, but intended to be an actual answer, because it could also not have been a lady. bi steve. it’s canon now.

steve LOST COUNT of how many dates he’s been on with brooke (the lady he’s ironing his shirt for on valentine’s day) and he’s kind of smiling while he says it and that’s cute!! i like that for him!! but also. when the fuck did he go on all of these dates with brooke when he was also dating the vet in between, out of the running entirely for at least a month or two, and he’s been continually living with danny since he got back to hawaii and danny apparently knows nothing about these dates. what kind of stealth techniques has steve been employing? has he had brooke sneak in through his bedroom window at night so danny wouldn’t find out? how many times did he have to cancel a date because danny refused to sleep on the couch and there was no space left for brooke in steve’s bed? (i kid, but seriously, what is this timeline?)

danny: “i’m glad somebody has a life.” steve, pointing at danny: “oohhh, tani and quinn are going to the movies tonight...” fdjkfd, first bi steve, and now tani and quinn have a movie date. good stuff. i’m enjoying this.

fjdkfjdkf, steve, whAT. “tell you what, buddy, if i finish up early with brooke, i’ll give you a call, we can hang out.” i mean! that’s really sweet! but also very wtf, because he’s essentially going “hey, maybe this thing i have to do (date my girlfriend, ugh) won’t take very long and we’ll have time to hang! :D” and i just. god. i’m laughing, but i am so glad brooke is not a real woman because i feel very sorry for her.

danny a) recognizes signs of domestic abuse and b) has done his research and c) is appropriately gentle with this woman, even though they have her in custody and she’s already admitted to killing her husband and she potentially started an international conflict by doing so, and just. yes. good. this is a danny i love.

side note: adam is just randomly present at hq with the rest of the team when steve and danny are on the phone with them. and, oh my god. did he not just kidnap a suspect to make a secret deal with a yakuza boss? is that not the sign steve had been looking for, the reason why steve’s spidey sense had been tingling around adam? they still trust him currently and he’s just back on the job without so much as a warning? i mean, to be fair, steve is the type of guy to be all for crazy shit if it gets results, so maybe he’s glad adam did what he did, idk, but i am genuinely so confused at this point about what the writers are telling us about where adam stands, both with the team and in his own life, and with the yakuza, for that matter. is he now an active gang member while also trying to earnestly protect the law in five-0?

i love how this episode is escalating, omg. first we’re told the wife killed her husband, then he’s a thai diplomat, then the wife’s boyfriend killed the husband, then he didn’t, then thailand wants the wife while five-0 knows she didn’t do it and so they STEAL HER. taking a page out of adam’s book, i guess, though at least this time the entire team knows what’s going on.

except for tani and noelani, who are being held hostage by two amateur criminals in a convenience store, which is also a subplot i really like! honestly, not a bad moment in this episode so far.

okay, one very minor note though: please, for the love of all that is holy, do not let this woman they’re saving become a love interest for danny. they have a lovely talk in the back of a truck during the grand escape and that’s wonderful and good and i like it, but i can’t help but be really scared that the show is aiming to somehow make that romantic at some point because oh, dear lord, danny has dated enough abused women under questionable circumstances. doooon’t add a third one to the list, i beg of you.

the amateur criminals are trying to get cash that they need for MEDICAL CARE. god, i hate a world in which your options are a) commit crime or b) die. it’s a good plot, though!

kamekona is providing a safehouse for danny and the woman and he’s being very kamekona about it - warm and welcoming, but warning danny off of texting too much with kamekona’s phone because it’s ten cents per message - and it’s glorious.

oh dear lord. the couple robbing the store can’t afford the surgery the husband needs, so tani presents mandatory medical attention for prisoners as a solution, and that’s a good way to talk the wife down and probably also the best the couple can hope for in their current predicament, but it’s also very fucked up. you shouldn’t have to wave a gun around to get help for your brain tumor.

danny and the woman are found and get arrested, and the VERY NEXT SHOT is danny turning to steve in the car and asking how he got him out so fast. that WAS very fast, danny, you’re right. zero seconds has to be a new record, dang.

steve: “i may have promised yang that if she didn’t release you immediately i was gonna make a whooole lot of noise.” i do understand what this means, but i also enjoy the thought of steve literally making noise. any noise. if you don’t release danny, steve will appear at your door and start quacking like a duck very loudly. you’ve been warned, state department!

ahhh! they solve the case, find the actual killer of the abusive diplomat husband, make sure the wife gets to stay where she is and reunite her with the concerned doctor boyfriend who didn’t kill anybody!! this makes me very happy, all the more so because they won’t have her date danny if she’s already dating someone else, which puts my fears to rest. this season continues to be better about things than this show has been in the past and i appreciate the heck out of it.

adam gets an ominous warning to watch his back from a criminal he’s delivering information about hpd to. are we supposed to be on adam’s side? i’m still very confused.

fjdkfd, danny walks into the house to find the entire team getting ready for a night of hanging out and wonders if he invited everyone and forgot about it, and steve walks in, already chewing on something, and says “it’s possible, because you’re old now”. what a brilliant burn, steve. very impressive.

i won’t recount everything that happens because i know i’d end up writing a stupidly long paragraph but i do adore everything that happens and want that noted. the whole team just chilling and arguing about whether love actually is a romcom or a christmas movie? yes, please! a hundred of those.

danny takes steve aside to tell him he doesn’t have to worry about danny and steve gives an unconvincing reason for why he totally didn’t arrange this because he was worried about danny, which essentially makes it canon that he did plan all of this for that exact reason, which is SO EXTRA. they live together, they’ve spent the entire day together, and then steve cancels a valentine’s dinner with his girlfriend (who he told earlier that he didn’t want to involve danny in their relationship, because he’s too nosy) and invites like six other people just so he can hang out with danny again.

annnd they end up snuggled together on the couch. on valentine’s day. you know, like homies do.

THIS. WAS A VERY GOOD EPISODE. thoroughly enjoyed practically every second of it, 10/10, would like more like this.

RWBY Remarks: Oscar’s Talk with Ironwood (RWBY V7 CH7)

This isn’t going to be like one of my usual posts. Let’s just say that this squiggle meister really, really loved the scene between Oscar and General Ironwood from today’s episode---RWBY V7 Chapter 7. I enjoyed it so much that I’m going to be that nerd and quote all of it in this one post for future analysis and reference because that’s how much I loved it. I’ll also share some of my thoughts on this particular moment since…as I’ll reiterate, it was REALLY GOOD!

(Oscar and Ironwood down in the Vault of the Winter Maiden)

Ironwood: It’s right behind that door.

Ironwood: I hoped bringing you down here might jog some memories; after all it was your idea to use the staff to life Atlas off the ground.

Oscar: I thought gravity dust kept Atlas afloat.

To tell you the truth, that served for the inspiration for the Amity Project. Oscar: But…you’re not using the staff to raise Amity.

Ironwood: The staff could only be used for one purpose at a time. We’re going to have to do Amity the old fashioned way. Dust and all.

Oscar: Feels strange; knowing a part of me helped come up with all of this.

Ironwood: You’ll get used to it, I’m sure. Eventually, you won’t even know who’s who anymore.

Oscar: …Right.

Ironwood: We…didn’t always see eye to eye but…I wish I could ask Ozpin what he thought of all of this.

Oscar: Well, I can tell you what I think. The path you’re heading down, where you’re the only one with the answers, where you do the thing you think is right no matter the cost, it’s NOT going to take you anywhere good.

Ironwood: We have to stop Salem. Nothing matters more.

Oscar: Some things matter more. I think. Keeping our humanity. It’s what makes us different from her.

Ironwood: Sometimes I worry that’s her greatest advantage. Without humanity, does she still feel fear? Does she ever hesitate? When Salem hit Beacon, even with all my ships, all of my soldiers, I was no match for her. I’ve never felt so helpless, the way she told me she was there.

Oscar: It’s okay to be afraid. You can’t just let that fear control you.

Ironwood: I am not going to end up like Lionheart. Do you believe in me?

Oscar: I do believe in you. But not only you. I think the best thing you could do is sit down and talk with the people you’re most afraid to.

Ironwood. Now you are starting to sound like him.

Oscar is something else. He’s different from Ozpin. Different from all the other wizards and I believe even more now that his perspective on things will make his experience as the new Wizard a whole lot more spectacular.

Sorry to waste a post on this but I needed to caption this entire conversation. Not just for future analystic reasons but because I loved it so much. There is so much to gather from this one talk and it’s sad I can’t muse on it right now.

But what I will say from what I’ve gathered is my concern for Ironwood. Fear really is his Baobab like I had theorized and if he doesn’t remove it soon; it’ll lead to him losing his humanity.

With the exception of Glynda Goodwitch, I believe, each member of Ozpin’s Inner Circle---at least the men---- had a particular qualm about them that they succumbed to, based on the Oz character they draw inspiration from.

Qrow, I guess in his depression over learning the truth, succumbed to his alcoholism which you can say is a habit of his carelessness. Sometimes people who act careless commit foolish acts and we saw that with Qrow last season in V6 where he spent most of his time drinking himself into a stupor instead of banding together with the children to come up with a better solution.

I guess in a way, this shows that Qrow is no different than the kids? Qrow was only a child---no older than our young heroes---- when he met Ozpin and he spent most of his life following in his wisdom and guidance.

And after Oz “disappeared”, Qrow was left without a voice to guide him too like a scarecrow without a brain.

Lionheart succumbed to his fears. And now, Ironwood is at the risk of losing his humanity which is synonymous with the tin man needing a heart.

I don’t wish to imagine how James would be if he didn’t act with empathy and compassion. The irony is that you can sort of say that he is doing this already---sure he’s been looking out for the People of Atlas but he hasn’t even considered what his actions are doing to the People of Mantle.

Imagine what it would be like if James just stops caring about anyone all together and the only thing that mattered to him was stopping Salem.

I think this is what today’s episode is alluding to. At some point, I believe James will fall prey fully to his Baobab and will plot to go stop Salem---not even thinking about how the consequences of his actions might affect EVERYONE.

In the end, no one will matter to James. Not Winter. Not Penny. Not Pietro. Not even the People of Atlas. Not even the People of Remnant for that matter.

I think his goal of stopping Salem will become his main focus and all the humanity that he once had where he cared about people and trusted in others---all that won’t matter to him anymore. It’ll be all what he thinks is right.

This now makes me wonder what will happen if ‘this version of James’---a one driven into his own paranoia of one primary goal---one primary programming to stop Salem at all costs---how would he feel when he learns that the thing he’s been obsessing over to the point of losing himself to it, is all for not?

How would James feel after realizing that he can’t stop Salem at all…especially after he’s given up everything---meaning his humanity---to stop her?!

I’m actually REALLY FREAKING INTRIGUED AND EXCITED by this now.

And we wouldn’t have gotten this conversation if it weren’t for Oscar lending his insight. Speaking of, can I just reiterate again how much I loved this episode particularly for this scene---this talk between Ironwood and Oscar.

I think I’ve said it a couple of times before, right?

THIS is what I’ve been wanting for the longest while! This is what folks who often criticize Pineheads like myself who want Oscar to have more focus in the series don’t understand.

When I say I want RWBY to focus on Oscar, I’m not just asking for the Writers to give him more screen time or have him do cool things or just act cute for the entire episode. While any moment with Oscar is great, that’s not really what I’m looking for as a fan of his character. It’s fine if that’s what other Pineheads want but speaking for myself mostly here, I look for more than just the small “breadcrumb moments” for Oscar’s side of things, y’know what I mean?

When I say “CRWBY please give Oscar more proper focus”, I’m NOT asking them to kill off all the other characters in the series and quote, unquote, “Make Oscar the main character of RWBY”.

Honestly, I don’t know where some folks get the impression that “focus” is tantamount with being the main character of something. Not every character in a show has to be the main character just to have focus. As a matter of fact, I often find myself being impressed by shows that are able to provide good writing and development for its side or supporting characters just as much as the main ones. But then again, that’s just me.

In the case of Oscar, this is what I mean when I say FOCUS ON HIM. Allow the audience to see and hear what he’s thinking when the story demands it. Allow him to challenge other characters on their perspectives with his own and let the audience see all of that rather than have it happen off-screen and Oscar has to then tell us about it in a later scene while no one really reacts to what he’s saying. *coughsV6CH9coughs*

This is what I have personally been wanting to see. I want Oscar to talk to other characters and give his own opinion on things and let the plot focus on that because when it does, that’s when we get the gold, people!

Gold comes out of this boy’s mouth every time the story allows him to and no I’m not just saying that ironically because Oscar’s name is synonymous with the colour gold.

But you just know when the story focuses on Oscar in the right way---meaning let us see and hear how he feels---it’s good. Better than good. It’s freaking great and this is why I clapped for this scene with Ironwood.

This scene was my favourite scene from the episode and probably my best moment with Oscar for V7 so far.

Oscar’s talk to Ironwood reminds me so much of his V5 Dojo Scene with Ruby. I actually think I like Oscar’s talk with Ironwood more since we get to hear more of what Oscar is thinking and see Ironwood react to it. This moment was GREAT, you guys. I cannot stress this enough.

Oscar was really, really great in this episode and his stance with Ironwood made me feel so proud of him as a fan of his. Having Oscar spend more time with James---I was worried about where that was going to but I’m glad that this is the direction they went with him---showing Oscar being the opposite side to go toe to toe with Oz. He is like Ozpin in this manner but at the same time. he’s also his own person because Oscar is advicing James from a person who saw where Oz’s path eventually took him and how he’s doing his best to guard people he care about from walking down the same path.

Oscar was talking more as himself in this scene and....I LOVE IT. I hope there is more.

I want more moments of Oscar talking to people. This is what I want to see above anything else. More than any Rosegardening Rosebud moments he’ll have with Ruby. More than him even unlocking his semblance. I want to hear Oscar’s thoughts on things that happened to and around him within recent times and I want to see him challenge other characters with his ideals and see how they react to what he’s saying.

I still want to see Oscar challenge Ruby on her stance with keeping the truth from Ironwood. I think Oscar has a greater incentive to do so now.

That line---that piece of advice that he gave James about “talking to the people you’re most afraid to”, I don’t think that advice was just for James. I wonder if we’ll have Oscar approaching Ruby again and the two resuming their talk from V7 CH3? I think it will happen soon, especially with how things are shaping up for James.

That Baobab man. It’s going to consume him. Not unless the little barn prince convinces the little red rose withholding secrets to help him remove the tin man’s baobab seeds before it’s too late. At least that’s what I’m thinking.

That being said, I’m curious to see where Oscar and James will be for the next episode. Will we go straight into the dinner? Overall, I am hyped for CH8. I don’t think I’ve been this excited for an episode to come for this season.

I just want to see how everything is going to play out. Especially for James and how Oscar is going to react to it. I’m sure Oscar will be watching James very closely for the next episode to see if he will take his advice. I doubt Ironwood will take Oscar’s advice. As a matter of fact, I think CH8 will be the first sign of Ironwood’s Baobab completely taking over and….it’s going to result with him having bad blood with not just Jacques Schnee or the Council (because I think we might see them too since Ironwood will be fighting for his seat on the Council) but everyone.

I think Ironwood will take the step towards losing his humanity next episode and I’m curious to see how Oscar will react to it. Maybe he might approach Ruby again on the subject matter and after James…dips…Oscar might look to Ruby who might finally come to the realization of what she had done. Because ironically, Ruby isn’t the only one walking Oz’s path for this season---James is too. The really, really bad one and maybe seeing James might help Ruby with her own qualms.

I dunno. Like I said, I am so excited for next episode!

Towers and Princes

summary: I based this off this post by @today-only-happens-once featuring Aro!Logan trapped in a tower, and eventual QPR Logince

word count: 6,712

warnings: homophobia, crying, I think that’s it but if I missed anything please let me know

a/n: so this ended up way longer that I thought it would ever be but im really happy with it. I had a lot of fun writing this. Thank you Grae for letting me write this, I hope you like it!

Logan looks up to see his father enter his room and sighs.

“Why would you scare her away like that?! I know you aren't like that normally and she’s a very nice lady!”

Logan sits up straight and looks his father in the eye, “Veronica is boring and we have nothing in common. A marriage between us would never work.”

The king starts pacing, “Gosh, Logan, I know you have high standards son but come on! If you’re going to be a good king one day you have to settle down with someone! You’ve read the history books, they're the one thing you like. You know that all the unmarried kings of our kingdom were horrible and went ballistic and threw the country into a downward spiral and I will not let you end up like that!”

Logan takes a deep breath, “Father, you know I would be good at ruling. I am level headed, skilled in war tactics, knowledgeable in economics, and good at negotiations. What standards do you have that I do not meet to be a good king?”

“You are not married! You will need a wife to keep you stable.”

“I don't want to be rude but-”

“Then don't.”

“You have to understand that i'm not just gonna marry any person that walks through those doors!”

The king storms out of the room and Logan lets himself fall back on his bed with a groan. He can't take another day of awkward suitors who don't even like him and make him uncomfortable.

Later that night Logan is pacing in his room talking to a strange man in a big dark cloak with a large walking stick, “You need to go talk to him tomorrow. You have to convince him that this is a good idea. He is upset I didn't want to marry Veronica, it’s the perfect time to persuade him.”

“Are you sure now is the right time?” the man asks leaning heavily on his walking stick

Logan crosses his arms, still pacing,“It has to be, he has to be willing to do this. If not I will run away and this will happen anyway, but I do hope to get his approval on it so my mother is not so worried when I disappear. I mean, I would leave a note, but still.”

The man shifts, “I understand, Prince Logan. My parents were undoubtedly upset when I left, but seeing as they were looking to get me hanged I don't think they minded all that much.”

“Sorry if i'm intruding but why did your parents want you gone?”

The man moves the large stick into his other hand, “Let’s just say I have a preference for princes.”

Logan nods, “I see. If i'm being honest, even though i've never felt... attracted to anyone before, i'd say I do as well. Princes are much more tolerable and interesting than their female counterparts.”

The man sits, “I'd have to say I agree. But tell me, really, has no one struck your fancy?”

“Not in a way that is any different than friendship. No. Though you probably don't believe me.” Logan sighs finally stopping his pacing to take a seat at his desk next to the man.

“No, I believe you.” He assures Logan

“Really?”

The man sighs and turns to Logan, “I believe I understand you better than you think. Let me guess, you don't like anyone romantically. You would rather a person, if you were to have to live with them, fit the qualifications for a friend than look attractive. Attraction is something I would believe you find to be arbitrary and confusing. You would rather just be friends with someone than be in a romantic relationship and you hate that you are being forced into one. Am I correct?”

Logan blinks and gawks at him, “How? How do you know?”

The cloaked man chuckles, “I've arranged for at least a hundred members of high ranking families to take advantage of my services in an attempt to avoid marriage. Do you really think you’re the first and only person who has ever felt the way you do?”

Logan sighs, “I suppose that it would make logical sense that I am not alone. It’s kind of nice to know.. But enough about me, you remember the plan?”

“Yes.”

Logan nods, “Well then be ready tomorrow, because I'm not staying here being pestered with questions of marriage another day.”

“You have the plans I asked for?”

“I do.”

“Give them here,” The man demands extending a hand, “I will make arrangements for it to be set up. Be sure not to pack before the decision is made or people will get suspicious.”

Logan gives him the papers, “I understand.”

The man leaves in a puff of smoke and Logan sighs. He walks over and collapses onto his bed. He falls asleep hoping they can pull this whole thing off.

The next morning the King takes a meeting with an old man, a known sorcerer with a black cloak and a large staff, “Your majesty, i've heard your son has had a difficult time finding a suitor he approves of.”

“You could say that,” the king shrugs, “I’d say it’s more like he is being downright rebellious.”

“Well, Sire, I believe I know of a solution that could work to benefit you both. One that could help Prince Logan find a suitor he approves of.”

The king leans forward slightly, “... Go on.”

The man shifts his weight to lean on his staff, “Well, most people assume that when princesses and princes get locked in towers that they don't choose to be there, however that is rarely the case. Many princes and princesses come to a decision with someone like me. They decide to have the child locked in a tower, by someone like me who provides them with food and the like. The parents then claim they were kidnapped and say that whoever saves their beloved child can have their hand in marriage. Towers are often personalized so that the person who ends up doing the saving is someone suitable to the child’s preferences. And tada, the child gets married with no complaints.”

The king nods, thinking it over, “That is... smart. But I doubt I could get my son to agree to such a thing.”

“So you agree you would be willing to make an arrangement?”

“I would.”

“Then why don't we ask your son what he thinks?”

The king turns to one of the servants, “Bring Prince Logan down to see me please.”

Logan enters the throne room and takes in the scene before him, masking his excitement.

“Son, meet Virgil the Mysterious.”

“Good morning my Prince.” Virgil says with a small bow.

The king smiles, gesturing to Virgil, “He has a proposition to make. He thinks he knows about an arrangement that might work to find you an... acceptable suitor.”

“And just what might that be?” Logan asks crossing his arms.

“I place you in a tower where I supply you with your daily needs, food, water, letters from your parents, and the like. The tower would be... personalized with different traps and such that potential suitors would have to pass to get inside. You would of course have a say i'm what those are so that the person who “rescues” you will be someone you approve of. And if you at any time wish to leave because you have figured out who you want to marry and no longer require the use of the tower, that is easily done.”

Logan blinks and runs a hand through his hair, “You’re suggesting that you lock me inside a personalized tower and that whoever saves me can marry me. And the steps required to get inside are actually going to be test to make sure they’re a person I would approve of?”

“Yes, precisely.”

Logan frowns, “Father, are you serious?”

“Yes. The alternative is you stay here and we continue this search for suitors that we have been on for the past year in the same fashion as always.”

Logan slowly turns to face Virgil, “... You said I can leave the tower and come back at any time if I change my mind?”

“Yes of course,”

Logan thinks for a moment, “I’ll do it.”

The King smiles, “Really?”

“Yes father. I assume this happens soon?”

Virgil shrugs, “It can happen today if you can be packed by tonight.”

“I can be packed in two hours”

“Well then, today it is.”

Logan goes to his room and begins packing. He is soon joined by Virgil who shuts the door behind him.

Logan turns to Virgil, “I'm so glad that worked. This will be much easier than sneaking out would be!”

Virgil smiles, “I am glad that it worked out as well. I would hate to have your dad coming after me for taking you away.”

Logan snorts, moving his clothes from his dresser to a bag, “He wouldn't come after you, it would be my mom you would need to be worried about. So anyways, where is this tower i'm going to be staying in for what is hopefully a very long time?”

Virgil sits on a stool in front of Logan’s vanity, “Well, i'm going to be magicing us there but on horseback, it’s at least a three day’s ride. We will have a week to get your tower set up and for you to get comfortable.”

Logan frowns, “Do we need that much time?”

“For you to help me set up those complicated puzzles, yeah. We need a week. Honestly we might need more.”

“They aren't that complicated.”

“One of your riddles asks what the scientific name for a tomato is. I don't even know what a tomato is, much less the scientific name for it!” Virgil huffs.

“Okay, perhaps some of them are a bit much, but honestly. I just want to make sure that whoever saves me is an interesting person and has some similar likes to me.”

“That’s fair.” Virgil shrugs.

Two hours later Logan is standing in the middle of his room, bags in his hands and a backpack on his back ready to go.

“Do you want to say goodbye to anyone before we go?” Virgil asks.

Logan is silent for a moment, “I would like to talk to my mother, she should be in here soon-”

Logan is interrupted when his mother the Queen bursts in.

“Oh there you are Mother. I was expecting you to come a bit sooner.”

“Logan dear, why? Why are you doing this? I don't want you to leave me.” She exclaims, upset.

Logan sets down his bags and takes his mother’s hands in his, “I won't be leaving you, Virgil promised he can be a letter carrier for us, we will still talk. As for why, you know I do not like any of the girls father has chosen for me.”

His mother sighs, pulling away, “Yes but if you are locked in a tower princes will come after you. You would not want to disappoint them.”

Logan mumbles, “I’m sure some of them will be disappointed, but maybe I wouldn't mind a marrying a prince.” He doesn't dare look his mother in the eye.

His mother huffs, “How dare you. You have embarrassed me enough by choosing to go off to this tower over choosing to settle down, but this..? How could you dishonor us like this?! You are a disgrace. I'm glad I won't have to see you again for a long time.” She stalks out of the room, slamming the door behind her.

Logan flinches at the sound, his legs giving out as he drops to the floor.

Virgil slowly approaches and sits in front of Logan, “You okay?”

He ducks his head and closes his eyes. Logan gives no response.

“It was brave of you to tell her.”

“I thought she might’ve-” Logan’s voice breaks and he chokes back a sob.

“You had hoped she would be more accepting.”

Logan nods.

He sighs, “I understand, but now we need to get out of here. We don't know what she might say, or who she might say it too.”

Logan sits up and takes a steadying breath, hoping Virgil won't notice the tears on his cheeks.

Virgil stands and offers Logan his hand, “I'm sorry, Prince Logan, but it is no longer safe for you here.”

Logan takes his hand and stands. He grabs his bags and takes one last look at the door. He sighs, letting a few more tears fall, “I'm ready to leave.”

Virgil grabs Logan by the arm and the next thing Logan knows his vision is clouded by smoke and he feels as though he is falling. When he feels his feet hit the floor, he opens his eyes, they are standing in a clearing in front of a large stone tower. There is a wooden table on their left which Logan assumes is for planning out the tower’s puzzles.

Logan stares at the tower, saying nothing, just making mental note of its size.

Virgil, assuming the silence means something is wrong asks, “What, do you not like it?”

Logan shrugs, “No, I like it, it is just larger than I had anticipated it being.”

Suddenly a person comes running up to meet the pair, “Oh hey boys, i'm glad to see it all worked out!”

Virgil clears his throat and gestures to the man, “Logan, meet my husband, Patton.”

Logan shakes Patton’s hand, “Oh, uh, hi. I didn't expect to get to meet you, but it is a pleasure.”

Patton smiles at him then turns to Virgil, “Oh, Virgil, You didn't tell him?”

Virgil shakes his head spreading Logan’s tower designs over the table, “Not yet no. We were busy talking over the design of the tower and the different puzzles and such he wants.”

Logan frowns, “Wait, tell me what?”

Patton smiles wide, “I’m a shapeshifter!” he says throwing his arms out wide, “I can change into any form I want! And i'm going to be your dragon!”

Logan blinks, “Okay, wait what? My dragon? What does that mean?”

Patton shrugs “Well, towers tend to be guarded by dragons or surrounded by a moat or something, right. And because we couldn’t find an open tower with a moat, you get me, your guard dragon!”

Logan nods slowly, still a little unnerved by the chipper man in front of him, “Oh, I see.”

Patton takes a bag from Logan “So,I hope i'm not intruding, but what makes you feel like the tower is a better option for you that staying at home?”

Logan shrugs, “Well,I don't like anyone romantically, never have. I guess I just have really high standards. And I prefer princes to princesses.” Logan raises a hand to his cheek, wincing at the feeling and pulling away.

“Considering the mark you got there, I take it that didn't go over well.” Patton remarks with a frown.

Logan shakes his head sadly, “No. It went over worse that I had expected.’

Patton nods, “As far as not liking anyone romantically goes, I have a few theories as to why that might be.”

Logan arches an eyebrow.

“I heard you like books and research.” Patton says with a small smile

“I do.” Logan admits.

Patton takes the jar, “Then I suggest considering taking a look into aromanticism. All one word, no dash after the a or anything. You might find it helpful.”

“And how exactly am I supposed to be able to do research from inside a tower?”

Virgil speaks up from his place at the table, “You will have access to my library. I will set up a system with you. Before you go up you choose about five books take them up to read. I’ll take your requests and input and provide you with more when you finish them. I can start with giving you some books on Aromanticism.”

Logan smiles, “That... that sounds like a fantastic arrangement.”

Patton smiles grabbing another one of Logan’s bags, “Why don't we go up and work on setting up your room with your things?”

Logan nods, grabbing the rest of his bags and slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

Logan looks around at the room, it was, decidedly unremarkable, but Logan was happy with it.

Patton places his bag down and urns to look at Logan, “I know this room is not as nice as your old room, we simply can't afford to keep these towers super nice. I hope it isn't a huge deal-”

Logan shakes his head, “I like it. It is nice. It is plain, simple, I can organize it however I desire and there are no unnecessary items anywhere. It has good light, a clear view of the stars, think I will be very happy here.”

‘I'm glad, you’re most likely gonna be here for a while.” Virgil says, Logan is unable to tell if he is actually happy or is being sarcastic, but he doesn't much care either way.

“So, how about you explain the puzzles to me so I can build them?” Virgil suggests, laying the papers out on the table in the middle of the room.

Three days later the puzzles are in place and Logan places the last book on his desk with a smile, “There, i'm completely unpacked.”

Patton claps, “Yay! You seem happy with everything.”

“I am. I am very happy to have a place to myself. If I am being honest, I am glad to be away from my family right now.” Logan admits sitting on his bed.

Patton frowns, “Do you want to talk about it?”

“I guess it couldn't hurt.”

“Well then, why don't you wanna be at home?”

Logan sighs, “The last thing I did before leaving was come out to my mother. I don't know if she ever told my dad. If she did, I am certain he will react worse than my mother did, and that was bad enough. I don't know if I can ever go home and face them again. Not when I left like that.”

Patton moves and sits next to Logan, “You mean... You left right after the argument?”

Logan frowns, “Well it wasn't much of an argument. I told her. She lectured me about how much of a disappointment and disgrace I am to the family. She slammed the door behind her. I left a note on my desk saying we left and then we left.”

“It was brave of you to tell her.”

“Maybe it was, but I wish I hadn't.”

Paton nods, “I encourage you, read those books about aromanticism, it may help you make sense of some of what has brought you here.”

Logan nods, “I will.” he says as Patton leaves.

He grabs the book and sighs. He doesn't really feel like having a big moment right now, but it’s the middle of the day and he is bored and has nothing better to do. So he opens the book and starts reading.

“This book is about aromanticism, and I figure, if you’re gonna read about it, I should explain what that is. Someone who is aromantic doesn't feel romantic attraction towards anyone of any gender. Now i bet you’re wondering what romantic attraction is, well don't worry, that’s what this first chapter is all about.”

Logan becomes engulfed in the book and in twenty minutes he has read half of the first chapter. He sets down the book and thinks over what he has learned, writing it in a journal.

“So aromantic is where you don't feel romantic attraction towards people. And romantic attraction is where you have a desire to be in a romantic relationship and actively wish to do romantic things with them.

I..... I don't think ive ever felt that before. I..... I think i'm aromantic. That... that would explain why I never had crushes on anyone growing up and why i never really cared about marriage and... oh wow! This explains everything.”

Logan stares at what he wrote, a small smile on his face as the reality of what he just realised hits him. He isn't just choosy with his relationships, he doesn't just have high standards, he isn't broken or missing anything, he’s aromantic.

In a burst of excitement Logan spends the next few hours reading the rest of the book. When he finally finishes it, he sets the book and stares off a the wall. He just took in so much information that he doesn't know how to process it all, but what has sunk in has hit him like a punch in the stomach.

He is aromantic. He feels so happy but he feels like he could throw up at the same time. His head hurts but he thinks he could run laps around his room and not be tired afterwards. He sits and thinks it over, trying to imagine what he would want in the future, what kind of relationship he would want, what kind of house he would live in if he didn't live in the palace.

That night Virgil visits him, he appears in a puff of smoke by the window and Logan looks up from his seat at his desk.

Virgil holds up some papers, “Your mom insisted I bring you her letter. I haven't read it, but if it’s anything like the awful stuff she said to you earlier I will gladly burn it in my fireplace.”

Logan takes it from him, ‘Thanks Virgil.”

Virgil frowns, “Hey Logan, you seem a bit... off, you okay?”

Logan smiles, “I’m fine, I just read the book on aromanticism and i'm still processing it all.”

Virgil nods, “Well, okay.”

Logan looks at the papers in his hands, ‘I don't know if I can look at these right now. Could I read them later and give them to Patton or something if it’s awful?”

Virgil shrugs, “Sure, I won't rush you to open it. Whatever works. ”

“Is there anything else? Did... did my father say anything?” Logan asks.

“Your father.... He did definitely say some stuff. The summary of it is that he knows you like guys and he doesn't exactly approve.”

Logan sighs.

“I asked him what I should have you do if a prince is the one to rescue you. He said he refuses to marry you to a man. If that ever changes, I will let you know.”

The next day Logan decides to open the letter from his mom. He reads the first sentence and sets the letter down with a groan and a sigh.

“Hey Patton.” Logan calls, hoping he will hear.

Logan smiles, he likes that idea.

His father never took back his sentiment on gay marriage, so Logan is not worried when he realised when one year has passed and not one suitor has stayed after hearing that Logan is a man. Logan pulls his head back inside, sitting back down to his work startled to hear the response, “Oh my dear sweet prince, I will do all I can to save you. I swear on it!”

Logan freezes for a moment before answering, “Doesn't it bother you that I am a man?”

He hears Roman give a hearty laugh, “No, believe it or not, i'm gay.”

Logan is pulled out of his shock and he looks out the window again, this time looking down at the man, “Prince Roman, I do believe we have that in common.”

Roman smile up at him, shading the sun from his eyes, “Well, that is great to hear. What is your name, oh beautiful prince?”

Logan rolls his eyes, “I am Prince Logan.”

Roman smiles, “I have heard of you Prince Logan. I did not know you like princes.”

Logan lets out a sigh, “Well I would rather you not spread it too far, there are people at home who do not know.”

Roman nods, “I understand and I won't tell a soul. Though, I think you should know, back in my kingdom, they do not hate people like us. We are accepted and viewed as equals.”

Logan leans on the windowsill, head in his hands, “As much as I desperately wish to believe what you are telling me, I find it hard to even imagine a place like that.”

Roma shrugs “Perhaps when I save you, I can bring you back to my kingdom so you don't have to imagine it.”

Logan nods, “Perhaps you may, but it is dark and I insist you leave. Go back to your camp or your home, wherever it is you came from. you can start on the puzzles later when you aren’t so tired, I will see you when you come back.”

“But Logan, how do I know you will be here when I come back?” Roman asks

Logan sighs, “You are the first one to stay after I announced that I am a man and not a princess, you have no competition.”

Roman smiles, “Well that is good to hear. I will return in two days time, and then I shall return with all the supplies I may need to save you from your prison.”

Logan smiles, “I look forward to our meeting again.”

“So long my fair prince, until I return.”

Logan waves and closes the window with a sigh. He had hoped to remain in the tower for more than just a year, but he is glad to know that when... if he gets out of here, there is a place he can go and be accepted.

When Roman shows up two days later Logan goes around to the back of the tower where Patton is waiting to show himself.

“Now,” Logan mutters.

Patton nods and Logan sees him fly straight up, and feels the tower shake a bit, he assumes Patton has landed on it.

“Who are you, that you seek to take this man from his cage?” Patton roars.

“I am Prince Roman. I seek to save Prince Logan from his solitude and bring him back to my kingdom, a place where people like us who like people who are the same gender as us are viewed and treated as equals.”

“So you do not wish to marry the prince?”

Patton nods, “Those are good answers. I will let you be in your quest to save Logan, though, be mindful, I will not be so kind to any friends you may bring with you. This quest is for you to complete on your own.”

Roman smiles, “I am up for the task!”

Patton leaves and Roman spends the day trying to solve all of the puzzles, but he can't even get past the first one.

The days go by and Logan and Roman talk while Roman works, discussing their interests and families and swapping stories. Logan does take breaks to read and journal and such, but they spend a good amount of time getting to know one another. This goes on for a long time and Logan begins to grow fond of this prince fellow who calls him by every nickname imaginable from Lo to Specs to Teach. He rolls his eyes at the theatrics Roman will put on for him whether in frustration at the puzzles or just to entertain him, but he smiles all the same.

One day, Logan is sitting at his desk rereading the book on aromanticism again, more out of sentiment than anything else. He had memorised it long ago, but reading it again brought him peace.

Logan jumps, dropping his book as he hears a noise at the window. He watches as an arm clings to the windowsill. He realises with shock, that Prince Roman just climbed in through his window.

Logan stares as dread settles into the pit of his stomach as he realised he is going to have to marry this man.

Roman looks up at Logan panting at the effort of climbing through the window and sighs, “It was proving impossible to get to you the normal way, so I climbed. I got to ask, why all the puzzles, Specs?”

Logan shrugs adjusting his glasses, “If I have to spend my life with someone romantically, I at least wanted to make sure they’d be an interesting person.”

“Do I qualify?” Roman asks raising an eyebrow at Logan.

Logan nods, “I guess you do. I mean you got in here, didn't you?”

“I did get in here.... wait, do you not want to get married?”

Logan frowns, “When did I ever say that?”

Roman shrugs, “Come on, Lo, you seem hesitant about it.”

Logan sputters, “I mean a romantic relationship, especially one that is intended to last one’s entire life is a big deal and a big decision and-”

Roman groans, “Oh my gosh, Logan! What is it? Why don't you want to get married? I'm not gonna be offended if you would rather get to know me better first or if i'm not your type or whatever. Please just tell me. I am not going to force you to marry me if you don't want to.”

Logan sighs deeply, looking down at his feet, “It’s complicated.”

Roman slowly steps towards Logan and takes his hand, “Well, no one knows I made it up here. We have all the time in the world. So please, just sit, take your time, and tell me what's bothering you.”

Logan walks with him to the end of the bed and sits. There is a long moment of silence.

“I don't know how to do this.” Logan admits.

“Well, what are you doing?”

“... coming out.”

Roman stares at him for a moment before relaxing into a kind smile, “Hey, it’s okay. I promise i’m a safe person to come out to. I’ll listen and do my best to ask questions if there is something that I don't understand. And don't worry, I get it, coming out is hard, especially if you haven't done it before. So, just take your time to get your words together and we can do this when you’re ready.”

“Cool, glad I knew something.”

Logan sighs, “I know I told you i'm gay, but that isn't exactly true. While I do have a preference for men, I am aromantic. My attraction is more emotional and aesthetic than romantic, or even sexual.”

Roman blinks for a second, “Oh, okay. Oh.... OH so that’s why marriage is uncomfortable for you.”

“Now see, this is where things get complicated. Because actually Roman,” Logan admits, “I would love to be in a relationship with you, just not a typical romantic one.”

“Okay, i'm lost.”

“That’s okay. Can I explain?”

Roman nods.

“Feel free to ask questions if you need.” Logan clears his throat and sighs, “A queerplatonic relationship, or a QPR for short, is a relationship that is based on attraction that isn't romantic. Grumble grumble

Gonna grumble about life below the cut, lol! I’m mostly talking about covid-19 in the states.

A few states have closed down public schools for the next two weeks, which means that many parents are unable to go to work (many daycare centers follow local school shut downs).

My workplace responded by telling everyone who can work from home to work from home. I am a hands-on lab researcher, which means I must continue coming in. However, they created a temporary category of leave for folks who have been exposed to covid-19, or who are showing symptoms. They are paying workers to stay home if they are symptomatic. So really, this is a generous and effective policy... Provided people use it properly.

And any system that relies on people behaving sensibly is a bad system.

What people don’t seem to realize- even people who work in pharmaceuticals?!- is that covid-19 symptoms aren’t limited to coughing and fever. It can also look like the common cold, especially in young, healthy individuals.

I nearly lost my cool yesterday because two of my direct, lab-bench buddy coworkers have been coming to work with cold symptoms. Another was coughing all day, until people shamed him into going home. Meanwhile, one coworker was explaining that her husband’s coworker was exposed to covid-19. I asked why the hell she was here, and she said she’s quarantining on Monday when our telework option officially starts.

Guess I’ll just die potentially become a walking incubator of a disease that could kill other people, then?

Situations like covid-19 call for strict, clear rules stated by the federal government and enforced all the way down. All travelers from impacted areas must be tested/quarantined. Telework is mandatory when possible. Anyone showing any kind of illness symptom must be sent home and put on paid admin leave. Is this disruptive? Yes. Will people abuse it? Yes. Will it drastically reduce the scope of the pandemic and save lives? Yes, so it’s worth it.

Sadly, Trump removed the people who handled the Ebola threat with clear, country-wide enforced rules and... Never... replaced them. We do not have much in the way of federal guidelines, leaving state leaders to decide what to do about covid-19. When Congress tried to get approval for mandatory paid leave for people exposed to covid-19, it was shot down. We don’t have enough covid-19 testing kits. Our federal government has done nothing to protect us, even though they had time to prepare compared to China, and even Italy, which is... beyond frustrating. Beyond the pale, really.

I’m trying to do stuff to help? I pointed out to my boss that our water bottle filler operates by pressing a lever to release water... And people press it with the mouths of their water bottles. He blinked and said, “Yikes... I dispense the water with my cup, too.”

Humans are humans. Scientists are also short-sighted humans, just like everyone else. And if people who have dedicated their lives to creating life-saving medicines can be this ineffective in a pandemic situation... I dunno, I don’t think the future is looking good.

As for the non-scientists in my life, they’re literally more worried about toilet paper than the disease. I told my mom that I’d get her a bidet attachment, and she was insulted? I dunno what it is about Boomers that makes them derive genuine pleasure from hating anything that reduces waste.

If you’re interested, here is what I’m doing to try to stay safe:

-Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, frequently. Do not substitute this with hand sanitizer.

-Do not touch your face.

-Sanitize your phone and computer daily with alcohol wipes (Lysol is better, but check your device documentation to be sure it can withstand it).

-Don’t worry about toilet paper, buy a gosh danged bidet attachment. Also, food and TP shortages are not the problem. Even in quarantines, food stores should be open. But, if you buy produce or anything loose that people can touch, clean it thoroughly. A sick person could have handled it.

-Don’t eat out. Sadly, food industry workers rarely have sick leave and are forced to come in to work when ill.

-Avoid crowds whenever possible, push to telework if you can, don’t travel.

-If possible, stay home if you have any kind of cold or flu symptom.

-Sanitize your home. Look, I love gentle solutions as much as the next Millennial, but it’s time for bleach and Clorox.

-If you must report to work, inspect the communal coffee/water dispensers. Could they potentially spread disease? If yes, report the concern and don’t use them until they are replaced with safer alternatives. Also, do not eat food left out in communal areas following meetings.

-(Edit: I walked back this stance in a new post after talking about this in therapy. I no longer recommend what you’re about to read in this bullet. Check the post linked at the bottom of this post for why.) If your coworker is sick and your company offers sick leave/admin leave, shame them, report them, get them out. I have coworkers who call this a dick move. I respond that taking the risk of turning everyone around them into covid-19 incubators soars beyond ‘dick move’ and into the realm of ‘endangerment of the elderly and the immunocompromised.’ (Seriously, at least two of my coworkers have immediate family members who have no immune system and wouldn’t stand a chance against covid-19).

-If you’re in the states, you might not be able to be tested for covid-19. I really don’t know what you’re supposed to do if you think you have it, other than immediate self-isolation. Calling your doctor for advice is probably the best place to start. I would not roll into a medical facility without calling ahead. There might be infected people there, and they might not even have the kit to test you.

In closing, if you are healthy and under age 65, you will most likely be fine if you are infected at this point in time. But about 3.6% of the USA is immunocompromised. About 12% is elderly (over 65). In 2018, there were 327 million people in the states, ish. So that’s, what... About 51 million people at risk in my country alone?

If the pandemic grows beyond the point where our medical system can handle it, even young, healthy people will be at risk, since people won’t be able to receive proper treatment.
