Mystic Egyptian Polytheism Resource List
Because I wanted to do a little more digging into the philosophy elements explored in Mahmoud's book, I took the time tonight to pull together the recommended reading he listed toward the end of each chapter. The notes included are his own.
MEP discusses Pharaonic Egypt and Hellenistic Egypt, and thus some of these sources are relevant to Hellenic polytheists (hence me intruding in those tags)!
Note: extremely long text post under this read more.
What Are The Gods And The Myths?
ψ Jeremy Naydler’s Temple of the Cosmos: The Ancient Egyptian Experience of the Sacred is my top text recommendation for further exploration of this topic. It dives deep into how the ancients envisioned the gods and proposes how the various Egyptian cosmologies can be reconciled. ψ Jan Assmann’s Egyptian Solar Religion in the New Kingdom: Re, Amun and the Crisis of Polytheism focuses on New Kingdom theology by analyzing and comparing religious literature. Assmann fleshes out a kind of “monistic polytheism,” as well as a robust culture of personal piety that is reflected most prominently in the religious literature of this period. He shows how New Kingdom religious thought was an antecedent to concepts in Hermeticism and Neoplatonism. ψ Moustafa Gadalla’s Egyptian Divinities: The All Who Are The One provides a modern Egyptian analysis of the gods, including reviews of the most significant deities. Although Gadalla is not an academic, his insights and contributions as a native Egyptian Muslim with sympathies towards the ancient religion are valuable.
How to Think like an Egyptian
ψ Jan Assmann’s The Mind of Egypt: History and Meaning in the Time of the Pharaohs is my top text recommendation for further exploration of this topic. It illuminates Egyptian theology by exploring their ideals, values, mentalities, belief systems, and aspirations from the Old Kingdom period to the Ptolemaic period. ψ Garth Fowden’s The Egyptian Hermes: A Historical Approach to the Late Pagan Mind identifies the Egyptian character of religion and wisdom in late antiquity and provides a cultural and historical context to the Hermetica, a collection of Greco-Egyptian religious texts. ψ Christian Bull’s The Tradition of Hermes Trismegistus: The Egyptian Priestly Figure as a Teacher of Hellenized Wisdom provides a rich assessment of the Egyptian religious landscape at the end of widespread polytheism in Egypt and how it came to interact with and be codified in Greek schools of thought and their writings.
How To Think Like A Neoplatonist
Radek Chlup’s Proclus: An Introduction is my top text recommendation for further exploration of this topic. It addresses the Neoplatonic system of Proclus but gives an excellent overview of Neoplatonism generally. It contains many valuable graphics and charts that help illustrate the main ideas within Neoplatonism. ψ John Opsopaus’ The Secret Texts of Hellenic Polytheism: A Practical Guide to the Restored Pagan Religion of George Gemistos Plethon succinctly addresses several concepts in Neoplatonism from the point of view of Gemistos Plethon, a crypto-polytheist who lived during the final years of the Byzantine Empire. It provides insight into the practical application of Neoplatonism to ritual and religion. ψ Algis Uzdavinys’ Philosophy as a Rite of Rebirth: From Ancient Egypt to Neoplatonism draws connections between theological concepts and practices in Ancient Egypt to those represented in the writings and practices of the Neoplatonists.
What Is “Theurgy,” And How Do You Make A Prayer “Theurgical?”
ψ Jeffrey Kupperman’s Living Theurgy: A Course in Iamblichus’ Philosophy, Theology and Theurgy is my top text recommendation for further exploration of this topic. It is a practical guide on theurgy, complete with straightforward explanations of theurgical concepts and contemplative exercises for practice. ψ Gregory Shaw’s Theurgy and the Soul: The Neoplatonism of Iamblichus demonstrates how Iamblichus used religious ritual as the primary tool of the soul’s ascent towards God. He lays out how Iamblichus proposed using rites to achieve henosis. ψ Algis Uzdavinys’ Philosophy and Theurgy in Late Antiquity explores the various ways theurgy operated in the prime of its widespread usage. He focuses mainly on temple rites and how theurgy helped translate them into personal piety rituals.
What Is “Demiurgy,” And How Do I Do Devotional, “Demiurgical” Acts?
ψ Shannon Grimes’ Becoming Gold: Zosimos of Panopolis and the Alchemical Arts in Roman Egypt is my top text recommendation for further exploration of this topic. It constitutes an in-depth look at Zosimos—an Egyptian Hermetic priest, scribe, metallurgist, and alchemist. It explores alchemy (ancient chemistry and metallurgy) as material rites of the soul’s ascent. She shows how Zosimos believed that partaking in these practical arts produced divine realities and spiritual advancements. ψ Alison M. Robert’s Hathor’s Alchemy: The Ancient Egyptian Roots of the Hermetic Art delves deep temple inscriptions and corresponding religious literature from the Pharaonic period and demonstrates them as premises for alchemy. These texts “alchemize” the “body” of the temple, offering a model for the “alchemizing” of the self. ψ A.J. Arberry’s translation of Farid al-Din Attar’s Muslim Saints and Mystics: Episodes from the Tadhkirat al-Auliya contains a chapter on the Egyptian Sufi saint Dhul-Nun al-Misri (sometimes rendered as Dho‘l-Nun al-Mesri). He is regarded as an alchemist, thaumaturge, and master of Egyptian hieroglyphics. It contains apocryphal stories of his ascetic and mystic life as a way of “living demiurgically.” It is an insightful glimpse into how the Ancient Egyptian arts continued into new religious paradigms long after polytheism was no longer widespread in Egypt.

IMO Security Breach suffered from the whole "Vanny is actually Vannessa " thing. Vanny and Vannessa should have been different characters and the game would have been so much cooler if you played as both Gregory AND Vannessa trying to escape the Pizzaplex hacked by Vanny. (Freddy can still be a companion too. Vannessa segments would be more challenging because she cant fit in Freddy to hide.)
The aim of the game is to uncorrupt the other animatronics that Vanny took over, and get them back on your side. Engame being finding out who Vanny really is and releasing her from Glitchtrap's control. Whatever ending you get depends on how many animatronics you save. Also the whole William still being "alive" thing is bull. Glitchtrap should have been a rouge A.I that William made in his image. Still connected to him, but NOT actually him. The last stain he left on the world before going to hell.
Bonus points if Vanny and Vannessa have some sort of past. (*coughs* ex girlfriends *coughs*) I’ve always been a fan of the identity theft theory.
Anyways what I’m saying is fuck you Scott fuck you Steel Wool there was so much potential and you BLEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!

On January 1st 1600 Scotland celebrated the New Year for the first time on this date.
Scotland actually adopted January 1 as New Year’s Day in 1600 when it switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. England wouldn’t do this until 1752. Under the Julian calendar, the new year began on March 25th.
The Julian calendar, had been used throughout the Christian world since ancient times. But by the 16th century, scientists agreed that the old calendar improperly calculated the length of a year and was therefore falling gradually behind. During the reign of Pope Gregory XIII, a new calendar was created, called the Gregorian calendar. The new calendar, which began the year on January 1st, was adopted by most of Europe in 1582, but England and Henry VIII had broken with Rome and therefore did not adopt the new calendar.
The Scottish government decided that January 1st made a better New Year’s Day than March 25th, so the decision was made to make January 1, 1599 the new January 1st, 1600. As a result, 1599 had only nine months.
Most of Europe adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1582 and 10 days were dropped from the calendar. Though Pope Gregory’s papal bull reforming the calendar had no power beyond the Catholic Church, Catholic countries—including Spain, Portugal and Italy—swiftly adopted the new system for their civil affairs. European Protestants, however, largely rejected the change because of its ties to the papacy, fearing it was an attempt to silence their movement. It wasn’t until 1700 that Protestant Germany switched over, and England held out until 1752.
Scotland did not follow suit completely, we kept the same amount of days as the Julian calendar, so year after year in Scotland, as in England, the Julian calendar fell gradually further and further behind so we had changed New Years Day but technically we were still using The Julian calendar, this continued until 1752 when Westminster implemented The Gregorian calendar and dropped 11 days. The last European country to adopt the reform was Greece as recently as 1923.
Another wee New year fact is that The Guinness Book of World Records has listed “Auld Lang Syne” as the world’s most-sung melody, even more than “Happy Birthday.” Poet Robert Burns actually transcribed the lyrics from an older Scottish folk song, and it was later paired with the music to create the traditional song we know so well. Radio play in American starting in 1929 helped to popularize the song on this side of the Atlantic and contributed to it becoming a tradition worldwide.
The pic shows the first page of the papal bull “Inter Gravissimas” by which Pope Gregory XIII introduced his calendar.

April 23, 2024: Available Now: Archaic Torsos of Both Sexes
Available Now: Archaic Torsos of Both Sexes Gregory Orr
Though I'm modest as most, I couldn't help noticing certain parts of the statues have been polished to a high sheen by passing hands as the centuries passed. If it's a form of worship it's not much odder or more perverse than the saint's stone toe kissed to a stub by fervent lips.
And even though Plato suspected art almost as much as he suspected the body's curves, he did assert Desire could lead to the True and Beautiful. Therefore I choose to believe that mortals pausing here to cup a marble breast or buttock were doing their best to grasp the Ideal— and their foolish gestures made it shine more brightly.

What Color Was The Cat Who Told You The Black One Was Bad Luck? - @yaanuwnarchives
“Pope Gregory IX, the 178th pope of the Catholic Church from 1227 to 1241, is often remembered for issuing a Papal Bull declaring that cats bore Satan’s spirit, which subsequently led to huge numbers of cats being killed throughout Europe”.

The pity reserved for single women may well conceal a bid to ward off the threat they represent. Witness the cliché of the "cat lady," where the pet is considered to fulfill unmet emotional needs. Journalist Nadia Daam develops this idea further in her book Comment ne pas devenir une fille à chat: l'art d'être célibataire sans sentir la croquette ("How not to become a cat lady: the art of being single without a whiff of Sheba"). In her show Je parle toute seule ("Talking to myself"), comedian Blanche Gardin describes how her friends advised her to get a cat—a sign, as she read it, that her situation was really desperate: "No one says, 'Get a hamster, they live two or three years, by then you'll have found someone.' No, what they propose is a twenty-year-long solution. I ask you!" Cats are, in fact, witches' favorite choice of "familiar spirit" —usually simply called their "familiar" —a supernatural creature who assists in their magical practice and allows them sometimes to change their appearance. In the original animated opening credits for the series Bewitched, Samantha turns into a cat and rubs against her husband's legs, before jumping into his arms and becoming her human self again. In Richard Quine's film Bell, Book and Candle (1958), the witch played by Kim Novak, who keeps a shop selling African art in New York, asks her Siamese cat Pyewacket—a classic name for a familiar—to bring her a man for Christmas. In 1233, a bull issued by Pope Gregory IX declared cats to be "the Devil's servants." Then, in 1484, Pope Innocent VIII ordered that all cats seen in the company of women be considered their familiars; these witches were to be burned along with their animals. The cats' extermination contributed to the growth of the rat population, so aggravating subsequent outbreaks of disease—which were blamed on witches . . . In 1893, Matilda Joslyn Gage remarked on the persistence of mistrust toward black cats, inherited from these earlier times, which translated into a substantially lower market value for their fur.

AAAAAAHHH FINALLY A REQUEST FOR GREGORY VIOLET!!! Y E S
Things Nobody Knows
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🎨Pairing: Gregory Violet x Female!reader
🎨Warnings: mention of a future arranged marriage (a really good one 💟)
🎨
«But… but… Gregory Violet! Sto-op, this is unfair!»
The sun enters into the room with more strength, as if it had been attracted by these words, and your figure bathes in its orange light, even if your attention is far away from the beautiful afternoon outside the chiseled windows of your family’s manor. By your own surprise, your voice came out louder than expected, but the recipient of your words doesn’t appear to have been touched by them, too concentrated on his canvas and absorbed in the work to hear or notice anything.
You narrow your bright eyes and approach him from behind, the lips trembling and with bated breath, then stare at his painting with the face all red. «Gregory―!»
The boy stops only for a second, sensing your presence, then starts again without changing his expression. You lean over his shoulder and stare at the canvas, pursing the lips in a comical grimace and narrowing the eyes, not really knowing what to think. «You cheated. Admit it.»
Violet remains quiet and doesn’t immediately respond to your words, and when he does it is completely unexpected. «How quiet and shy you are when with other people… today you are talking a lot.»
«Don’t change the subject!»
While you take your chair and lift it elegantly to place it next to him, Gregory looks at you from under the hood of his cloak, a hint of a smile on his face and the brush still in his hand, ready to start again. The boy lights up a little as he stares at your hair, the way you fix a fold of your dress, your expression that wants to seem irritated but fails to hide all the other emotions. «I thought ours was a painting competition, not to see who can talk the most…»
«Yes, yes, at the beginning it was a fair painting competition… but you are painting me! It is… not… in the rules… it is obvious you did it to distract me and win!» You point your index finger at the canvas, occupied by the most perfect image of you that anyone has ever seen: as if your reflection had been trapped by the colors and the gaze of the young man, who in turn contemplates the work not yet finished and draws a deep breath as he leans forward to see where and what to retouch. «But we haven’t set any rules on the subject; so, nobody can blame me for having chosen to paint my promised wife. Also, our families will be really glad to see it.»
You blow like a bull, the hands on the hips and the expression so adorable Violet can’t look straight at you without slightly smiling and blushing, and you end up gently laughing, leaning to his ear. «So… you painted me to convince my family to let me marry you quicker?», you whisper, and then cover your mouth to not let him see how much you are giggling. And blushing.
Without words left, Gregory turns his gaze as far away as possible from you, then lowers his head and the voice becomes only a whisper. «So… it seems I have already won our competition. Now, we have to establish the proper reward for it―»
You don’t give him time. Forgetting your usual shyness, your fingers are faster than every possible thought and while a hand caresses Gregory’s chin, you bring your face closer to his and leave a light, quick kiss on the cheek, but strong enough to make him gasp, his eyes widening to the surprise. Violet gives you only a look, then covers his entire face with the hood and makes you giggle again, while your head spins with something similar to euphoria. «This is unfair, milady», he blows in an almost inaudible breath, «what a boldness.»
You smile, then it is your turn to move away the gaze and fix it on the sunset outside the room, touching your own cheek with a sweet smile and a dreaming expression on the face. «Do you like the reward…?», you manage to say, «or do I have to give you another kiss?»
He replies only with muffled sounds; so, keeping smiling, you return to look at him and take the brush from his hand. «Let’s finish this portrait», you whisper, ready to concentrate yourself on the canvas. You have to wait only for a second: the moment after, Violet’s fingers touch yours with hesitation, then with more conviction as soon as they find the spaces to intertwine with yours and trap you in a gentle grip. «You are annoying…», Gregory mutters from under his hood while leaning his head towards you, and you can’t help smiling. «Gregory Violet! You have known me since we were children and you are realizing it now? I feel outraged!»
He doesn’t answer, but you know that, under the protection of the clothes, his mouth is curling in a smile; and you leave another kiss on his forehead, making him protest. «Is this some sort of punishment?»
«My sweet boy… if it is, then I hope to punish you more and more», you murmur, caressing his fingers with yours and lingering on the sensations his touch is giving to you in this warm late afternoon, where love awaits and grows.

Gregory: My future wife will need to keep up with me on a horse...and be a crack shot if we're invited to any hunts. So we're going "riding"! and then hunting!
(The Watcher would like to clarify that all proceeds from the hunt will be donated to the Dragon Valley food bank.)

Amalie's certainly showing off her assets. What is this, Flashdance?

Demelza: Tally-ho! Don't look at my hairrrrrrr!

Gabrielle is careening dangerously close to a fall.

I'd never seen someone do this before, and I thought she'd bought it for sure--but Isadora walked away with the "Conquered the Bull" moodlet! Impressive!

Mathilde is practicing her best orange-polishing wave. I think she has the wrong idea about Ferncombe Hall's place in the peerage.

Poor Marie-Claude is not having a good time, ladies. Please think about something other than sandwiches, cutlery (are you picking out the wedding silver???), and lifetime wants. [She got the Pwned by the Bull moodlet. Poor thing.]

Vivian, however, had the time of her life.
Nobody aside from Marie-Claude and Isadora got moodlets, so hopefully we'll get a better range of scores on the second part of the challenge, which I will play and post tomorrow.
I don't feel like it's fair to have winners and losers if only two Sims got a moodlet. It's like having a test and only two people actually put any answers in, and the others just handed in a blank paper. What kind of a curve is that?

Did you know about Saint Goranas, the little-known Catholic Saint who was a gorilla?
Though he was born near the equator in the year 471 A.D., Goranas had a special gift for spreading the love of Christ. Blessed with unparalleled strength, Goranas often performed miracles that astounded onlookers, including the raising of a man from the dead and the transformation of a raging bull into a docile lamb.
Despite his large stature, a kind heart quickly made Goranas a beloved figure in the area. Crowds anxiously sought to witness his miracles, including an incredible feat where he suspended himself on a cross of vines for three days straight in prayer and meditation.
But it was his final act of faith that earned him sainthood. While on a mission to spread the gospel in a remote region of the Congo, Goranas refused to abandon a sickly orphan. Knowing he could ensure the child’s safety only by sacrificing his own life, he chose to take the boy into his arms and hurl himself from a steep cliff, shielding the young boy from an untimely death.
In appreciation of the gorilla’s selfless act of faith, Pope Gregory IX canonized him as a saint. Today, Saint Goranas is still remembered throughout the Catholic Church as a symbol of courage and Strength.

World building and theories of Engage
Griss
Griss's name is derived from the Old French word for grey, ‘gris'. I believe that the botanical reference for his name is the pinot gris grape vine. The grape vine is an important symbol in many religions and mythologies, I shall start with the Bible where the grapes and grapevine can represent abundance, as well as the blood shed by Jesus Christ for our sins. The shedding of blood and the suffering of The Passion by Jesus Christ link suffering to bring a sacred passage. Griss endures pain and sheds blood in devotion to the Fell Dragon. The symbolism of the grapevine as abundance is echoed by the connection to fertility deities such as Hathor and Dionysus.
I believe that Dionysus’s thiasus represents many of Griss's qualities; lusty, devotional, excessive and intoxication. In Greek mythology, Dionysus fell In love/lust with a satyr named Ampelos and pursued him violently and lustfully. Ampelos died when he was tossed from a wild bull and fired to death. The blood of Ampelos was used to create the first grapevine.
Dionysus's thiasus included unsavoury individuals, depicted as inebriated revellers, such as maenads,  satyrs, silenus and centaurs. Satyrs loved excess of wine, music, dancing and women and would often try to seduce it rape nymphs and mortals. Images of satyrs depict them pleasuring themselves or engaging in bestiality. The Silenus ruled over daimons and were associated with joyful drunkenness and drunken dances. The centaurs who followed Dionysus were as wild as untamed horses and were associated with rape and fighting. All of Dionysus's companions engaged in ribaldry.
The female followers of Dionysus were known as the maenads. They were often depicted in a state of ecstatic frenzy due to dancing and intoxication. In their ritualistic frenzy they would carry a thyrsus wrapped in ivy, vine leaves or both. The state Griss joined The Four Hounds is not dissimilar to the ecstatic frenzy and drunkenness of Dionysus's thiasus. In the B support conversation between Gregory and Mauvier we learn that Griss was ‘almost incapable of ordinary conversation. A complete pariah.’ Griss displays lusty behaviour when openly drools over pain, an example is in Chapter 20 - The Kingless Castle when Marni and Mauvier  are punished for losing two rings and In the same chapter engages in ribaldry with Alear where he lustily dares the Dragon to ‘tear him limb from limb from limb.’
Upon his cloak are symbols of eyes. The symbol of eyes are associated with worshippers of The Fell Dragon. Visit Zelkov's page for more about the meaning of the eye.
The black and grey colours of his attire represent his name. A character called grey should be dressed in similar tones. Black is also a colour associated with darkness and villains. The spikes and belts are edgy features designed to create an intimidating look. They are also a nod to his sadistic nature. The fuschia flames also feature on Mauvier's attire and I believe they represent the Fell Dragon.  In his early teachings, Buddha taught that there fires of the mind burn the mind and the world. These fires are raga (lust), dvesha (anger) and moha (delusion). There are also symbols of diamonds, In Buddhism the diamond is indestructible, clear, yet reflects every colour and symbolises the nature of the mind. His garments also depict the naga, particularly on his face and the front part of his skirt. Due to the shedding of their skin, nagas represent the cycle of birth, mortality, death, rebirth, mortality, death. Snakes also symbolise the Buddha and other powerful deities.
