A camera traps captured the presence of a jaguar. “It appeared three times,” one biologist says. The knowledge that the biggest cat in the continent still roams Costa Grande de Guerrero is cause for celebration.

The trail camera that registered the presence of the jaguar was mounted on one of the paths that locals use in the small ejido communities – areas of communally owned and managed lands – of Las Humedales and Platanillo, in the municipality of Tecpan in southern Mexico. That’s why when ejidatarios hear the news, they look at each other, smile and share the biologists’ enthusiasm. 

In fact, in the images recorded between January 12 and February 14, 2022; some of the locals who noticed the camera stared at it for a few minutes, posing and giving a ‘thumbs up’ as if they were taking a selfie.

One of the residents stated, “I told them that they would certainly look there.” He says that days before he had advised the biologists on where to place the camera traps, he and his brother had seen a yellow shadow between the trees out of the corner of their eyes. It was dark and they were walking the cattle. They didn’t know what animal it was. Their dog followed it and came back barking in just seconds.

The five families that live in the community of La Sierrita run a dairy business.

They are hopeful. “That means we aren’t doing so badly. We can recover what we had and save much of what we still have,” says one resident.

The director of Wild Felids Conservation México (WFCM), listens to the ejidatarios. The biologists behind the Guerrero Jaguar project know it’s urgent to intensify the work that they’ve been doing with the communities for almost a decade to preserve the populations of cats that live in the forest area of this region.

A future for the communities and the cats

The neighboring ejido, Cordón Grande, continue with the sustainable work on their land of around 16,000 hectares (39,500 acres). Thanks to that, they are launching productive projects like a community forestry company, for which they have received funds from the National Forest Commission (Conafor).

It was in the forests of Cordón Grande where the idea of creating a community corridor for the conservation of the jaguar in Guerrero started.

Nansedalia Ramírez, from el Cordón Grande, says that in 2013 her community received Conafor funds to conduct a study of the biodiversity in their forests. “The elders said there were tigers [as people call big cats in this region], they said they’d heard their roars. We thought it was only a rumor,” she says.

The ejido contacted members of the Guerrero Jaguar Project. The studies they carried out, published as a thesis, showed that the elders were right. In the forest area of Cordón Grande there were jaguars (Panthera onca) and other cat species like margays (Leopardus wiedii), jaguarundis (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) and ocelots (Leopardus pardalis).

It was then that the project to create the corridor was born. The ejidos of Cordón Grande, Platanillo and Las Humedales joined the proposal; together they comprise an area of 32,000 hectares (79,000 acres) of forest.

“It’s been a difficult process that has taken many years,” says one biologist.

Joining efforts

The ejidatarios go out with the biologists to set up the trail cameras, guiding them through the foothills of the mountains so that they don’t get lost. When the locations are remote and rugged, they take them in the all-terrain vehicles that the communities use.

At the start of 2022, the biologists of Guerrero Jaguar Project installed six camera traps around the community of La Sierrita. One of them is at the edge of one of the highest hills in the area, 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) above sea level.

“Sometimes the cat appears where you least expect it,” says another biologist.

In La Sierrita, the jaguar did in fact appear where they least expected it.

Since they started using camera traps in 2013, the researchers have documented the presence of 14 jaguars in the forest area of the three ejidos. They have also recorded pumas, ocelots, margays and a small cat that is very rare here: the jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi).

Biologists says that in this region of Guerrero there are records of 42 mammal species, 30 amphibians, 63 reptiles and 154 birds, including the crested guan and the military macaw.

With the information they are collecting from the images, the team of scientists wants to identify the places where the cats roam and spend the most time. This will help them, together with the ejidatarios, to map the area and make decisions about how to manage the territory.

“The forests in this area — from tropical to temperate, to montane mesophitic forests — still hold an important biological wealth that is worth conserving” states one biologist.

Community lands for conservation

A few months ago, in an assembly, the ejidatarios voted in favor of creating a voluntary area for conservation (ADVC) in their community territory. This is a category of natural protected area considered in Mexican law that allows the communities to make sustainable use of their natural resources and do different projects for the conservation of biodiversity.

The plans for the future are for the ejidos of Platanillo and Las Humedades to be able to certify a part of their territory as an ADVC, says a biologist who has aided the ejidos in this process.

Enlarging the corridor

Some of the new challenges for the scientific team include enlarging the corridor to encompass another 600 square kilometers.

There is already monitoring with camera traps in the Atoyac municipality and they also had good news. The images they obtained in the mountainous areas of Atoyac at the beginning of the year showed at least three locations with jaguars, pumas, margays and ocelots.

Since November 2021, the scientists have gone to the places where they installed cameras once a month, to replace the memory cards and batteries. They also change the location of the cameras to get a wider perspective on the place. The fieldwork takes 10 days on average, although there often are setbacks that make it take longer.

The sampling they are carrying out now is part of a National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiveristy (Conabio) project that aims to evaluate the condition of ecosystems in the country.

The biologists hope that the results obtained with this new monitoring will help them design new strategies to protect the estimated population of 113 jaguars in Guerrero.

"Mexico’s government recently announced the creation of 20 new protected areas across 12 states and two coastal areas in the country, covering roughly 2.3 million hectares (5.7 million acres). This follows a series of budget cuts to the nation’s environmental agencies.

Officials introduced four new national parks, four “flora and fauna protection areas,” seven sanctuaries, two biosphere reserves and three “natural resources protection areas” under the protection of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP).

“This is a commendable step toward biodiversity conservation and environmental protection,” said Gina Chacón, director of the Wildland Network’s public policy program in Mexico. She told Mongabay these new areas will help preserve the country’s rich ecosystems, foster sustainable practices and protect a broad range of important species and habitats. Though some environmental and Indigenous groups are wary the budget cuts could hinder efforts to conserve these areas.

The newly protected areas will preserve habitat and ecologically important marine areas for various species, including whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), Mexican prairie dogs (Cynomys mexicanus) and jaguars (Panthera onca). They will also help safeguard ecologically important coral reefs and areas of cultural significance to Indigenous communities.

Bajos del Norte, a new national park in the Gulf of Mexico, is the largest new protected area, covering 1,304,114 hectares (3,222,535 acres), almost nine times the size of Mexico City. The area is important to the more than 3,000 families that belong to fishing communities on the Yucatán coast. It is also one of the main grouper fish (Epinephelinae) reproduction sites in the Gulf of Mexico and will safeguard threatened species, such as the rocky star coral (Orbicella annularis) and the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata).

Joaquín Núñez Medrano, the secretary of the UEFAHG or Union of Forestry and Agricultural Ejidos Hermenegildo Galeana A.C. (Unión de Ejidos Forestales y Agropecuarios Hermenegildo Galeana), lives in an ejido — a type of communally owned land used for agriculture and forestry purposes — called Cordòn Grande in Sierra Grande of Guerrero, along the Pacific Coast. For more than 10 years, Medrano’s community has monitored species such as the jaguar and sustainably managed the ejido’s natural resources, without government assistance.

But now, the ejido has been designated a protected area in this latest round of decrees, as it falls inside part of the new Sierra Tecuani reserve. “The goal is to strengthen what we have already been doing but with support to do it much better,” he told Mongabay.

The second- and third-largest newly protected areas are Sierra Tecuani, a 348,140-hectare (860,272-acre) biosphere reserve threatened by illegal logging, forest fires and land use changes, and the Semidesierto Zacatecas Flora and Fauna Protection Area, which is important for the recovery of the Mexican prairie dog.

The state of Oaxaca is where the government created the most new protected areas, numbering three: the 90-hectare (222-acre) Playa Morro Ayuta Sanctuary, the 56-hectare (138-acre) Barra de la Cruz-Playa Grande Sanctuary and the 261-hectare (645-acre) Playa Cahuitán Sanctuary. Other protected areas were created in the states of Quintana Roo, Veracruz, Campeche, Nayarit, Zacatecas, Chiapas, Colima, Durango, Jalisco, Chihuahua, Guerrero and the State of Mexico...

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has protected more areas than any previous administration, with a total of 43 new areas across 3 million hectares (7.4 million acres). But Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), which works to safeguard the environment, has become severely cash-strapped throughout his six-year term.

SEMARNAT is one of many sectors in Mexico undergoing funding cuts. In recent years, Obrador’s government has implemented a series of strict austerity measures to free up more money for other areas like pensions and wages, boosting the leader’s popularity among citizens, particularly the working-class. Judicial workers, health services and academia have also had their budgets slashed in 2024...

Juan Bezaury-Creel, the director of the organization Fundación BD BioDiversidad Mexicana, said a protected area is better than no protected area because, once a decree is formalized, the government has a duty to protect it. However, this puts “huge pressure on existing personnel because they have to take care of more surface area with less resources,” he told Mongabay.

“The personnel from CONANP are heroic,” he said. “They are putting their lives on the line many times with little budget and little help.”"

Apenas aprendí el ritual, me dirigí a la escuela y espere a que Manuel se quedará solo y en un solo lugar. Cuando se dirigió al baño fue el momento perfecto. Mientras el se encontraba tomando una ducha, procedí a apuntar el objeto hacia él y a recitar las palabras necesarias.

Mientras decía aquellas palabras, noté como mí cuerpo cambiaba, mi estatura aumentaba, mis músculos crecían, o más bien se transforman en los de Manuel, mi voz al hablar se hacía más gruesa y varonil, sentía mi verga crecer entre mis piernas.

Por otra parte, Manuel había desaparecido, pues eso pasaba con aquellos animales que eran utilizados en este ritual.

Me acerque al espejo del baño, me quite la playera y finalmente, después de tantos años, pude cumplir mi deseo de observar su cuerpo en todo su esplendor, y era mejor de lo que imaginaba, era muy marcado y moreno. Era Perfecto.

Ahora no paro de presumir su cuerpo perfecto, o más bien, mi cuerpo perfecto. Compré ropa más ajustada y sexi, ahora uso playeras sin mangas, y cada vez que tengo la oportunidad me quito la camisa. Me inscribí en el equipo de natación para que toda la escuela me vea solo con un bañador.

El Océlotl Cuauhxicalli es una vasija mexica con forma de jaguar (océlotl) en la que se depositaban la sangre y los corazones de los cautivos sacrificados para alimentar al Sol. En el hueco que se utilizaba para este fin, se aprecian labradas las figuras de Huitzilopochtli, dios patrono de los mexicas, y Tezcatlipoca, dios protector de los guerreros, a quien también se le relaciona con este felino.

Hace rato quería traerles mis diseñitos precolombinos, así que aquí están: Tairona: Hermano de Muisca y padre de Kogui, se con muchas piedras semipreciosas, tocados de plumas complejos y telas cuando sale a hacer negocios, pero en casa no se molesta tanto por ponerse muchas cosas . Quimbaya: Uno de los mejores orfebres del territorio, varios elementos suyos son fácilmente reconocibles hoy en día. Sus cascos y aviones son una curiosidad arqueológica. Embera: La dulce madre de Katío, Chamí, Siapidara y Dobidá, es maravillosa haciendo joyería además de hacer coronas de flores, aunque también puede ser toda una guerrera, cuando debe defender a su familia. Tumaco: Un guerrero, tiende a ser un poco mas silencioso que los demas, tanto el como Embera tienen marcas en las mejillas que simbolizan los colmillos de un jaguar. Zenu: También llamada Sinu, es una gran arquitecta, pudiendo utilizar las inundaciones como parte vital de sus cultivos. Esta íntimamente unida al agua y al rio. Muisca: Otro gran orfebre. le dio al oro un carácter mucho mas ritual. Creador del tejo (deporte aun jugado en Colombia, aunque alterado), mucha de su herencia se mantiene en la zona central del país.

En fin, muchos de ellos murieron o fueron dejados en el abandono, pero hacen parte de la cultura de Colombia (y otros países) y no son tan conocidos como el Imperio Azteca, los Incas, etc. así que quise que los conocieran aunque sea un poquito. Espero que les gusten!!! Y recuerden que esta es solo mi versión de los personajes UwU

i greatly appreciate your questions so really don't worry about that fam ✌️ though it shames me to admit some of the subjects of these questions have been scraped or changed askjdaskdajsd orz but let's go one by one:

So if she was a normal werejaguar this wouldn't happen but since her curse is so unstable her lycan form tends to degrade/decompose and her face is usually the first thing to go. The meta reason is that i've always been a fan of monsters with skull heads and wanted to give her that design choice

Salazar is to blame thought it has to do more with Amaranta's death and Alma's uuuuh resurgence if you can call it that, confusing i know but i'm working on revealing the details someday i promis

3. Now this is an idea that got scraped 😔 perhaps i will recycle her old team into new characters/concepts but the only one i kept is Magdalena, and instead of the leader of that group she now will be a high ranking clergywoman possibly, the team was originally people that got semi successful curse treatment called bloodseers

4. Valor is a weremargay! she is the twin of Vega, Alma's old lover. The twins, Thiago and Alma have known each other since they were in their early teens; though their friendship remains important, Valor's current predicament is more of a tragic collateral damage

5. Another character that got scraped orz, however that's because I used a lot of her personality and story beats and fused them with other ideas i had to create Cadejo Blanco! so she lives on, in a way

Era el día más caluroso del año 3051. El sudor humedecía mi largo y negro cabello mientras corría descalza con mi mejor amigo, Kaibil, en la abundante selva. Éramos felices, libres bajo el sol. Kaibil se quitó una pulsera de obsidiana de su brazo, que según él le daba buena suerte. Un chamán se la entregó como agradecimiento por haber ayudado a encontrar a su nieta. Creo que era parte de su uk'ux kaj (karma) por hacer una buena acción.

Nos despedimos con la lúgubre sensación de que sería la última vez que nos veríamos.

En casa, mi madre, una mujer joven, trabajadora y amorosa, ya tenía la cena lista. Disfrutaba mimándome con deliciosos platillos elaborados. Sobre mi padre, no sabía mucho; a ninguno de los dos les gustaba hablar de él. Para mí, mi abuelo siempre fue mi figura paterna, mi jefe, mi protector.

—Pon la mesa —ordenó mi madre.

Mi abuelo salió de su habitación y besó a mi madre mientras murmuraban palabras que apenas alcancé a escuchar. "El quinto sol se acerca, Nikté, debes estar preparada", dijo, y la reacción de mi madre me indicó que no era algo bueno.

Él me entregó un collar con un dije en forma de jaguar hecho de ámbar y jade, igual al suyo.

—Como el tuyo, abuelo —comenté.

—Sí, mi pequeña flor —respondió.

Mi abuelo, sabio y con una barba blanca y larga, siempre vestía ropas blancas que casi cubrían sus pies, junto con su bastón de mando.

—Nos veremos pronto, hija mía.—

—Nikté, apúrate, tenemos que ir al templo para tus sesiones de educación.—

Aunque tenía solo doce años y solo quería jugar, debía obedecer si quería ser como mi abuelo.

Fuimos al templo para estudiar las estrellas, creían que entenderlas resolvería nuestros problemas diarios. La noche era hermosa, la luna llena y cientos de estrellas llenaban el cielo. Parecía que podía tocarlas con mis dedos.

Mi madre, cansada de mi falta de atención, decidió volver a casa. En nuestro camino, las ramas de la selva se movían con nosotros. Era Ek Balam, que nos seguía.

—¡Nikté, cuidado! —gritó mi madre.

Pero yo no temía a él. Ambos nos miramos a los ojos. Me mostró sus colmillos y rugió suavemente, pero no me moví.

Mi madre estaba asustada, pero Ek Balam me dio un lengüetazo en la mejilla.

—No te muevas, Nikté. —

Un estruendo a lo lejos nos alertó. Una bola de fuego se expandía hacia nosotros. Ek Balam me tomó con sus colmillos y corrió con mi madre hacia una cueva. Ella tropezó.

—¡¡Madre!! —grité.

—No te detengas, Nikté. Te amo. No mires atrás —fueron sus últimas palabras.

El fuego nos rodeó. Ek Balam, con su peso, me hizo perder la conciencia.

Cuando desperté, él ya no estaba. Con fuerzas limitadas, busqué a mi madre o a algún sobreviviente. La selva aún ardía en algunas áreas. Decidí proteger a mi gente, viajando de ciudad en ciudad en busca de sobrevivientes.

Hasta que llegué a la ciudad perdida de Mulut. Estaba cansada y hambrienta cuando encontré a una anciana, Zazil. Le pedí comida y refugio. Generosamente, me acogió en su modesta casa.

—Te quedarás en el cuarto de mi hijo —dijo Zazil.

—¿Y su hijo?... —pregunté.

Ella no respondió, pero más tarde supe que él luchó junto a mi abuelo contra la invasión de los gigantes del norte.

—Mi nombre es Zazil —me dijo.

—¿No preguntarás el mío? —le dije.

—Sé quién eres y por qué estás aquí. Este es tu destino. Anda, debes descansar. En caso de que me necesites, estaré aquí —dijo Zazil.

Después de la explosión, viví con la nostalgia de volver a ver a mi madre y a mi abuelo, pero Zazil se convirtió en mi segunda madre. Días después, encontré a Amaité, una perrita Xoloitzcuintle abandonada, quien se convirtió en nuestra compañera y guardiana.

Una noche, desobedecí a Zazil y terminé enfrentándome a Tzité, el gran simio que los señores de Xibalbá crearon para sembrar el terror. Zazil apareció para protegerme y alejarlo.

—Vete de aquí Tzité, no eres bienvenido. — pero él no se movía.

Zazil, molesta, pronunció un antiguo conjuro, haciendo huir a Tzité.

—Me desobedeciste —me dijo.

—Lo siento, Zazil. No quería poner en peligro a Amaité, aprenderé de esta experiencia.

Luego, Zazil usó un encantamiento para devolver la vida a Amaité, quien había caído inconsciente.

—¡Amaité! —exclamé al verla recuperarse. La perrita se puso en pie, aún aturdida, pero mostrando valentía.

Zazil sabía que los señores de Xibalbá volverían por Amaité, así que decidió dejar el lugar.

—Toma tus cosas, Nikté, nos vamos de aquí —me dijo Zazil. —Es hora de volver al mundo real y más seguro.

"Durante todo este tiempo, creí que estaríamos seguros en el portal que mi hijo Canek creó. Sin embargo, tras la explosión que devastó nuestra selva y el despertar de los señores de Xibalbá, creo que es momento de regresar al mundo real, donde será más difícil que nos encuentren", expresó Zazil. "Estrellas del cielo, abran este portal secreto que creamos con la intención de aprender, protegernos y guardar nuestros más profundos secretos. Una vez fuera, destrúyanlo, pues ha cumplido su función", añadió, invocando a las fuerzas místicas.

Intenté mantenerme despierta, pero el cansancio del día y las emociones me vencieron. Afortunadamente, Amaité despertó con los primeros rayos del sol. Al despertar, encontré una nota de Zazil: “Asuntos urgentes no pudieron esperar, prometo volver lo más pronto posible. Cuida a Amaité por mí. Buena suerte. Zazil.” Quedé atónita.

A pesar de mi extraña incapacidad para llorar, Amaité percibía mi tristeza. Para reconfortarme, apoyó su cabeza en mis piernas. “No te preocupes por mí, vamos a estar bien”, le dije. Pero en el fondo, sabía que las cosas no serían fáciles. Una vez más, me había convertido en huérfana y ahora debía buscar comida para las dos en un lugar desconocido. Aun así, al igual que hace seis años, cuando seguí adelante junto a Zazil, sabía que superaría esta nueva adversidad.

EL JAGUAR

Desde tiempos prehispánicos, el Jaguar, científicamente conocido como Panthera Onca; Ocelotl, en náhuatl; Balam, en maya, el más grande de los felinos en América, fue honrado por diversas civilizaciones mesoamericanas considerándolo como una de las especies más importantes dentro de su cosmovisión, principalmente en la Maya, la Mexica y la Olmeca

Su simbología ha sido representada a lo largo de los siglos en muy diversas formas en templos para su adoración, en la vestimenta de guerreros prehispánicos, en disfraces para sus celebraciones y danzas, es protagonista en todas las artes e incluso aparece en cuentos y leyendas. En nuestros días, se continua la ancestral veneración de esta singular especie en diferentes comunidades de nuestro México, donde se busca su preservación.

La cultura Maya le dio un gran significado al Jaguar, ya que podemos encontrar edificios, esculturas y símbolos, el de mayor relevancia es el “trono del Jaguar rojo” que se encuentra en KUKULCÁN la gran pirámide de Chichén Itzá; lo vincularon a las prácticas chamánicas y con el poder político, incluso los reyes unían sus nombres con el calificativo de Jaguar; con el espacio nocturno e inframundo, donde creían que iban después de la muerte, siendo el Jaguar el protector, lo relacionaban con el dios del Sol Kinich Ahau; así mismo, con la agricultura y la fertilidad, con la destrucción y la muerte. Para los mayas, el Jaguar representaba el universo, creían que las estrellas habían sido grabadas como manchas en su piel.

En la cosmovisión de los Mexicas, pensaban que el Jaguar representaba tanto la luz como la obscuridad, el cielo y la tierra. Muchas de las veces, sus madrigueras eran cuevas que los unían a la tierra y a la fertilidad. Era una figura muy frecuente con atributos de otros animales como aves y serpientes. La imagen poderosa de la deidad dual Tlaltecuhtli, (diosa-dios), paridora y devoradora de los seres humanos, algunas veces tenía garras de Jaguar. Simboliza el décimo cuarto día de cada mes en el calendario mexica, era el Sol del inframundo y el corazón del monte.

Además, los Mexicas consideraban al Jaguar como un símbolo de poder absoluto, valentía y arrojo; dentro de su estructura militar, asociaron las habilidades del felino a los soldados más profesionales, valientes y aclamados, llamándolos Guerreros-Jaguar, el honor más grande que podían recibir, pertenecían a la clase baja y eran los que formaban el frente de batalla.

En el caso de los Olmecas, (1200-400 a.C.) el Jaguar formaba parte de su religión y su arte, las estatuillas eran representadas como deidades, mitad humano y mitad Jaguar y les llamaban Jaguares; los hombres eran pintados con rasgos felinos.
