Merthur

Merthur is one of my all-time favourite ships, for very good reason, and should absolutely exist in canon.

It will forever irk me that they're not canon, because they are like, absolutely soulmates??? canonically too??? like this whole "two sides of the same coin" and "other half" bullshit sounds a lot like a soulmate situation to me so??? why no canon???

I'm sorry but they also just stare longingly into each others way too much for them to be totally platonic bffs.

And some of the lines they've said??? To quote some of my favourites, "do you know how to walk on your knees" (literally their first meeting lmao) and "is your little bottom sore" (both said by Arthur btw) like...it looks a bit suspicious...

Also that one scene in s04e12 where Arthur walks out with no pants...and Merlin's eyes instantly glance down...there...

Also Merlin's depth of devotion of Arthur??? This man is willing to slaughter entire armies for his king, that is a very strong bond they have. Not just that but in The Disir, Merlin gives up the opportunity to free magic, to have everything he should want, for a chance to save Arthur from a potential threat who hasn't yet proved himself to be anything but a loyal knight. That is love and you cannot tell me otherwise.

And Arthur? For me one of the most compelling scenes showing his love for Merlin - not just his attraction (because they really do flirt a lot) - is in s04e06. His fear over losing Merlin, the grief he feels when he thinks he has, his refusal to give up, his desperation and denial - Arthur was going through it. And when he finds Merlin, the smile that blooms on his face? The look in his eyes? That's love. It was a soul-crushing relief with swallowed Arthur in that moment, Arthur who thought he lost Merlin, his other half, the man which made him whole, as he found the man he loved again.

I also really just have to mention Freya's episode when Arthur is trying to cheer Merlin up, like he notices Merlin is down and tries to help in the only way he knows how (he's so proud of himself when Merlin laughs and he succeeds my god), and then HIS SMILE??? THAT SOFT SMILE HE GIVES MERLIN??? so not platonic at all. There is no way. Anyway I look at it, all I can see in that smile is Arthur's love for Merlin.

And let's not lie, Arthur is not comfortable with physical intimacy. Like at all. (let's blame Uther) But with Merlin? he's constantly ruffling his hair, punching him, clapping his shoulder. I absolutely believe that Arthur is an Emotionally Repressed Man-Child and these are the only ways he knows how to convey his care/love for Merlin.

Merthur have hands down the most tension-filled sexual chemistry in the entire show. Arthur and Gwen were nowhere near as good together as what Arthur and Merlin could have been, if bbc had let it happen.

I will absolutely die on this hill, I am, to the end, a merthur defender.

(Let's be honest they were basically flirting the entire show).

Merthur is, without a doubt, an 11/10 ship. You cannot change my mind these two are my entire personality atp.

I sometimes find these fics where the characters around the main ship don't believe character A has a boyfriend.

I need this for Merthur. But not the predictable: my boyfriend is a Prince/ son of the president (Arthur) version. I want the other way around.

Most things he says are outrageous but true. Like "Merlin helps me write my speeches and stuff" while everyone knows he's not allowed to have someone help him with those. "He's good at medicine, he's basically healed my fathers broken bones. (My father doesn't know we're a thing, please don't call on me.)" Stuff like that.

People don't believe Arthur has a boyfriend, because he keeps telling them things that make no sense/ aren't true, because Merlin still is a lying lier.

Arthur: he's an idiot, totally clumsy, but he could drink Gwaine under the table, with how often he's at the tavern.

Gwaine: i'm there every night, I've never met a Merlin.

Arthur: also, he crossdresses in secret

The few people who know a Merlin, unaware it's THE Merlin: can't be our Merlin

Arthur: there is no way my boyfriend is a magician (his father hates those fakers, that's why this came up, it's a non magic au)

Merlin rewatch s 1 e 13 FINALE TIME BB

Arthur’s little “it’s more scared of you than you are of it”followed by immediate fleeing. And then Merlin’s “whose missing? Sir bedivere?” *cue Wilhelm style scream* — A comedy!!

Rewatching this show, HOW is merthur the main ship and not Gwen/Morgana?? They stroke each others faces constantly.

“We haven’t done all the things we’re meant to do!” “That is the lament of all men.” “…gauis, he’s my friend.” Incredible. Show stopping.

Anthony head crying and carrying Arthur to his room before breaking down mid courtyard, in public? Ahhhhghggg.

Gwen’s little speech is so cute too. Loyal servant to friends to lovers. “Guinevere~~” he says with that tiny grin

People who say 'if Merlin were a girl, Merthur would totally be a thing!'. . .

Uh. . . You're wrong.

If Merlin was a girl, it's doubtful if 'she' would get the servant's position to the prince, and if 'she' did, there would be riots every thirty seconds about the way Arthur threw goblets at and shoved 'her' around and the way 'she' literally didn't have ANYTHING in 'her' life not about Arthur, and people screaming 'Abuse' and 'Unhealthy and Toxic!!'.

I'll leave it to you to decide if and why Male!Merlin should and doesn't get the same.

Also, if the main reason for shipping Merthur is 'they're destined!! Two sides of the same coin! Merlin would do anything for Arthur!! How can that not be romantic??', it's not just a complete lack of creativity, but also chock full of amatonormativity. Merlin having PLATONIC love for Arthur would also very much be enough to do all that he did for him. Let me remind you this is the guy who was perfectly willing to commit forgery, identity fraud and treason for Lancelot within a day of meeting him.

We have never ONCE seen Merlin try to throw a punch at Arthur after 1x01 or even toss one of the things thrown at him back at Arthur. Why the hell is that?? If this violence so normal for the friendship/romantic relationship these two share, why can't they show it on an equal basis at least once?

And the so oft quoted scene where Arthur apparently tells Gwen he'd leave her behind to go to a farm with Merlin. That ... is so not what happened. Arthur is confessing the dream he holds so close to himself to the girl he loves, and when Gwen laughs, questioning how someone like him would work hard, THEN Arthur says he'd take Merlin too - to do all the hard work while he lounged around. Then Gwen laughs and teases him back - because that is one thing they share in common, which was what brought them together, that both of their best friend is Merlin. Even when she later amusedly comments that maybe they can spend more time together when Arthur goes off to become a farmer, he just looks wistful, definitely not startled the way he would've if he were really having romantic fantasies about his manservant and best friend.

I'm not saying there aren't plenty good reasons to ship Merthur. Through everything, the two of them do genuinely love one another. And there is a sad general lack of queer relations in canon, which means fanon is the way to go.

But I AM saying that Merlin BBC ≠ Merthur.

It's perfectly fine to ship other ships, to see those relationships as the most important ones and best (to me), not bother about romantic relationships at all!!

I feel like I’m the only person in the Merlin fandom who doesn’t ship Merthur. I know I’m probably not but jeez.

Look. I’m pan. I have a lot of gay ships. But. Sometimes people are platonic, non-sexual soulmates okay?! They are two sides of the same coin, they don’t know how to exist without each other, they are partners, they are always together. They are not sleeping together, they don’t go on dates, they don’t say ‘I love you,’ they barely hug. They complete each other and yet they are individuals. They have relationships with other people. Arthur loves Gwen in a very different way than he loves Merlin, when Merlin is gone he misses him like a phantom limb, when Gwen is gone it’s like his heat has been ripped out. Gwen totally accepts that being with Arthur means Merlin will always be there and that’s an upside for her even if she doesn’t like Merlin that way anymore. Merlin is entirely devoted to Arthur, he would do anything for him, but they annoy the hell out of each other. Merlin will always be loyal to Arthur but he can still love other people, so long as they understand that he and Arthur are a package deal.

I get it, we want more lgbt representation. But Merthur is queer-platonic and that’s literally canon even if the term isn’t used. As someone who is probably aromantic (I haven’t actually dated yet so I’m hesitant but I think so) I like what they have canonically. I like seeing life partners who aren’t lovers. It reminds me of how when I was little my bff and I wanted to live together forever, get a big house, split it in half, and both live there with our future boyfriends/husbands (compulsive heterosexuality is a bitch). Why can’t people be happy with non-standard relationship dynamics?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes! I love getting comments, so it’s the least I can do (even if it takes a few days). I love when authors respond to my comments, so it’s only fair.

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Like many of the people answering these questions, I don’t write angsty endings. I considered it for Jam (I almost didn’t include the epilogue) but I love a happy ending.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

All my fics have happy endings. If I had to pick one as “happiest”, I’d say The Man With the Cartier Frames.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have not, luckily. I’ve had a weird comment or two where I’ve thought “why did you tell me that”, but nothing super negative.

9. Do you write smut?

Not really? I’ve written some mature scenes that allude to things, but don’t go into detail.  

10. Do you write crossovers?

No. I have particular objections, but I doubt I ever will.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, Lines in the Sand has been translated into French and That Time of Year into Russian.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I haven’t. I don’t object to the concept, but I’m not sure I’d be a great collaborator given my current writing style. I think I’m better at betaing which gives me a way to work with other fic writers.

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

This is really tough. I feel like it’s okay if your “all time” favourite ship changes every five or ten years. I mean, I am a very different person at 40 than I was at 25. My favourite to write is definitely Johnlock—they have a great dynamic and are both really interesting characters in their own rights. So, they are definitely up there. The other ship that comes to mind in terms of those that have really stood the test of time for me is Goren/Eames from Law & Order:CI (a very small fandom). Goren has a lot of Sherlockian traits and Eames is just incredibly cool (and both actors are gorgeous, which doesn’t hurt!).  I discovered Merlin in the last year or two and really like Merthur (honestly, I also really like Mergwenthur which I never thought would be my thing, but Gwen is so lovely), but it’s too early to tell if that will last long enough to be on my all time list!

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Corsi, my NHL Johnlock AU. I have a couple chapters written, but I started it a long time ago and my writing style has changed a fair bit since then. I think I’d want to go back and rewrite the first chapter, but that seems like a waste … so, instead, I will just leave it to languish.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I write Parentlock really well. I have young kids, so it’s relatively easy for me to make kids read age appropriate (which they often don’t in stories, be they fic or published). I hope I am also able to convey that delicate balance that parents feel—namely adoring their kids with every once of your being while wanting to throttle them.  Basically, I think I can write believable kids and believable parents.

I also think I am okay at creating cases, mainly because I become a bit obsessed with making the pieces fit.  I like internal consistency!

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I can’t plot out a fic well enough that I can post anything before it’s done. Which means, that I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to write a truly long fic (say longer than 50K words).  To have the motivation to write something that long, I think I would need the dopamine hit from posting and getting feedback. But, I just can’t see me ever posting a fic before it’s completely written, because of how often I go back and revise as I write. Particularly for fics with any sort of case—I’ll have the loose parameters of the case set out, but the details won’t emerge until I write. Which may mean I have to go back and edit earlier content to make those details work (internal consistency!). Even things like John’s work schedule or the timing of a phone call or what time Rosie gets out of school may change a half dozen times as I write to make the other pieces work.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic? 

I think it’s fine, but it’s best if you have a half-decent knowledge of that language. The only language I would use is French, should that ever come up.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

X-Files (this also seems to be a common theme)

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

Ugh. This is an impossible question. I really like Beneath the Surface—I love epistolary fics and I think I did pretty well with text exchanges in that one. I am also pretty proud of Jam. So, I suppose those would be my faves.

I am in a constant state of flux when it comes to shipping in BBC Merlin

One day I’ll be praising Merthur on their sassy dynamic & their stupidity with each other

And then other days I’ll see a Freylin or Arwen edit/picture & I go like „Aw they’re so cute & still manage to have an interesting dynamic”

Or I’ll see Merwaine & be SO grateful that the BBC Merlin writers made them meet bc they’re SO ICONIC

Or Mercelot with their solid friendship on which you could totally build an actually healthy relationship

Or Morgwen with the super cool bad bitch x sunshine aesthetic

Or any combination with the knights (a few examples: Gwaine/Percival, Gwaine/Lancelot, Percival/Elyan or EVEN BETTER MAKE IT POLY OR QUEERPLATONIC)

Mergwenthur are just THE perfect trio. Like they have everything. Whatever shit was toxic with Merthur completely disappears when Gwen (my beloved) enters on stage

Gwencelot is the most iconic knight x servant stuff I’ve ever seen (also: hello bi panic)

I read a fanfic with Morgana/Gwen/Lancelot & I gotta admit I was intrigued: you have 2 good souls on the 1 hand & a crazy bad bitch on the other to balance her out

Merdred is also super interesting bc they only have the enemies from enemies to lovers BUT there’s a chance for them to work ok (thank you fanfic writers, you all are a god sent)

There was also some tension with Morgana/Morgause (I know they’re sisters but you can’t deny there were certain undertones)

Lancelot/Arthur (Arcelot?? Arthcelot? Arlot? Arlance?) would also be an exciting knight x prince dynamic (you know the one. Where he says „my lord“ but actually means „my love“ uggghhh I can’t handle it). You could also twist the whole fiasco with their conflict over Gwen into a love story between the 2 & just say that Arthur had been jealous of Gwen OVER Lancelot

And when we’re already here: Arwencelot would just fix all the drama. Not to mention that they would give me bi panic & Gwencelot‘s healthy/calm aura could really make a better man out of Arthur & help him to grow out of his father’s shadow

Either my angsty harringrove fic I wrote for Mona - we've made a graveyard out of the bone white afternoon - or my Merlin fic where I made The Darkest Hour worse :) - the weight of one man's grief

It's gotta be this steddie fic, I think this is one of the fluffiest things I've ever written - and in the darkness you will see the sun

Probably prose and uhh someone told me once I was really good at like, narrowing in on the small details, also writing grief

The first character I first fell in love with: merlin :') dragonlcrd videos my beloved :')) i was like wow this weird ass rat is kinda pretty and very sassy

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: elyannnn i mean i liked him as soon as he appeared first time watching and shipped perelyan and i thinkkk perelyaine and i was so angry when he died just on principle i entirely stopped caring about what happened after but i didn't realise just how delightful he was til i went through and found all his scenes and watched them bc i wanted to do text posts for all the knights and didn't know if he (or leon, or percival) had enough canon personality (he did) (percival was a struggle as was leon kinda) ig percival too although he hasn't changed from the placeholder man i saw him as while first watching :')

character everyone else loves that I don’t: arthur except i don't hate him as much as i act, like i would commit several crimes for s1 him it's more how hypocritical, evil in his utter ignorance, and honestly pathetic he is by s5 and how he’s coddled by the fandom. The character I love that everyone else hates: eira :') i adopted her for camelove day... 6 i think? and wrote her perspective of dotd and i just... i know i KNOW her plotline is the worst but she was demonised by the writers as much as any other female character and that's no reason to ignore her existence. The character I used to love but don’t any longer: again merlin ig but also morgana. She... she's just... no. People make her out to be some feminist icon who was only bad bc the narrative portrays her that way and if she was just fighting for her people's freedom i'd probably agree. but she slaughters innocents, allies herself with all sorts of REALLY awful people whose actions she condones as long as they're not against her, tortures abuses and controls people who've done absolutely nothing to deserve it (Gwen, Mithian), and certainly by the end only cares about getting power. i... she's a villain. There's nothing wrong with liking villains of course, and i will still never forgive merlin for poisoning her, but she's not just 'misunderstood'. i used to be really big on morgana redemption but now don’t usually bother or include her in my fics bc i can’t see past what she did to gwen.

If merthur wasn’t so fucking ubiquitous i wouldn’t hate it half as much but alas :’) i have a grudge against perwaine simply bc people i’ve seen actually ship it are all height difference! banter!! flirting!!! all three of which perelyan has more of in canon plus they’re more affectionate and lbr percival made it pretty clear in 4x13 who he prefers (poor gwaine sitting there mangled and percy zooming straight past him🤣) and it kinda feels like people like perwaine more for the same reason elyan gets excluded from everything else and also it gets gwaine out the way of merthur but people can ship what they want and i don’t mind perwaine objectively so ig i digress... i also don’t like morgwen set in canon era for the above reasons but i can be swayed by modern au them (@mumble-muse’s xmas morgwen fic you’re an angel and we’re thrilled you're here, everyone go read and comment 🥰)

I am a dedicated Merthur shipper and a less dedicated Johnlock shipper so one thing that always strikes me is that in the case of both those ships, one party from each has a canon love interest (Arthur, Gwen and John, Mary). But in Supernatural, Dean does not end up with anyone. And I’m not well versed in herstory (which I believe means fandom history), but from what I’ve heard, the show runners/writers hated Destiel and that’s why it makes me absolutely fucking bonkers that they didn’t give Dean an endgame love interest. Giving Dean a love interest would have been the best was to discourage shippers, like, see, Dean can’t love Castiel, he has ____. BUT THEY DIDN’T. Somehow, the power of Destiel was so great, and their love was so undeniable that it was entirely not plausible to even try to pretend that Dean fell in love with someone else. And that, my friends, is why Destiel is totally canon.

So I was reading a ScreenRant article about what BBC Merlin got right about the stories and what it got wrong, but some of their explanations about the show were wrong and it was starting to annoy me. So I decided to hash it out here on tumblr and have my piece. And so that means you all are forced to hear me rant about some dumb article from the internet (or you can ignore me, I’m not the boss of you 😂).

Anyway, here's:

(I’m not gonna go through all the points, just the one’s I feel they got totally wrong.)

(Also, I’m going to try to keep this as unshippy as possible, but my own interpretations of the show are probably going to come out.)

WARNING: MENTION OF R*PE FROM SOURCE MATERIAL. ALSO, SPOILERS!!!

Ok so maybe this is my own opinion (like this whole post is going to be) but Merlin is technically a teacher. Not in the sense that Gaius is, not in the traditional “here, read this book for a lesson” sort of teacher, but he has actively tried to teach Arthur right from wrong during some instances where the royals were being stupid. Especially when Uther was trying to influence Arthur to do something that he thought was right (but since we know Uther, it was usually (always) actually wrong). Merlin was there to tell Arthur that his father was wrong, and in a way, that’s teaching/being a teacher.

Also, Merlin not being a lover is really a matter of opinion. He may not have had many actual romantic relationships canonically, but that isn’t what defines a “ladies man.” He’s attracted lots of women (and women). “Seen as inferior” my ass. In season one, Gwen had a major crush on him. In season five, Merlin had a slight flirtation with Sefa, even if that didn’t really last long. Throughout the series, we see the sexual tension between Merlin and Arthur. And Gwaine fell madly in love with him since they first met. And, of course, there’s Freya, which they already implied. So just because he’s only had one on-screen relationship doesn’t mean he’s not a heartbreaker. Also, he may not have had an actual relationship with Morgana, there’s definitely some kind of tension between them after she turns evil (whether it’s sexual or just them being enemies is up to you).

This may be me being really nitpicky, but the first time we see Excalibur IS 👏 NOT 👏 WITH 👏 FREYA 👏 This is the part that made me want to make this post. MERLIN 👏 DID 👏 NOT 👏 GET 👏 EXCALIBUR 👏 FROM 👏 FREYA 👏 Like, did the writer of this article even watch the show??? The episode where we see Excalibur for the first time is LITERALLY CALLED “EXCALIBUR!!!” And in the episode, it shows Excalibur being made when Kilgharrah BREATHED ON IT!!! Like, I don’t mean to be rude to the author, but you literally just had to watch the show one (1) time to know this. Maybe don’t write an article about a show you’ve never watched?? (Again, I really don’t wanna be rude, but this really rubbed me the wrong way.)

Again, I’m probably nitpicking, but wasn’t that the point of the show? Like, “Here’s the story of King Arthur except Merlin’s a twenty year old twink instead.” ? I mean, this really wasn’t all that big of a deal, but I need content and I had an opinion on this, so I’m sharing it. 

I mean, for the most part, this is right. We got the whole love triangle thing going on between these three. We got the tasteless “Lancelot du Lac” episode, which I just... we’re not going to talk about it.

 I think we all know, at this point, assuming we’ve all seen the posts talking/complaining about how Gwen was a princess, but instead they made her a servant. Especially because I think in the source material, Gwen was white, and when the show made her black and demoted her to a servant it was racist. Personally (and if this is racist, you guys should call me out on it), I like it because it shows a poor woman of color rising above everyone else and becoming queen, and that’s very badass of her and very empowering for WOC. (I’m not BIPOC so if I’m wrong about this, and anyone who is BIPOC found it offensive that they made Gwen a servant rather than a princess, you have every right to be.)

And now for my complaint: Gwen did actually become an antagonist for a few episodes. I mean, yes, she was technically under Morgana’s spell, so that makes her a victim more than a villain, but the storyline of Dark!Gwen makes her a temporary antagonist. So, article, you are wrong (in a way).

Ok so apparently Uther is just a despicable man no matter what story you try to tell. Just absolutely disgusting. And the fact that in the tales, Merlin actually helps Uther r*pe a woman 🤢🤮 Absolutely disgusting. 

But that's not why I’m talking about this part. The reason I bring this up is because if you watched the show, you would know that Nimueh tells Uther that they WERE FRIENDS. She wasn’t just some random sorcerer who he asked to use dark magic. She was his FRIEND who he asked for help when his wife couldn’t conceive. I think it might’ve also been implied that she was Court Sorcerer (but that might’ve just been a headcanon that I read). But either way, Uther didn’t just turn to dark magic to have a child. He asked his friend for help then betrayed her when it backfired on him.

Again, no matter what happened, Uther is just all around a terrible man.

Ok so this part I don't really have a problem with, but I am confused. I haven't read any source material, so I don’t know this for sure, but I thought Arthur did know about Merlin’s magic. Maybe not in all the tales, but is there not a single one where Arthur knows of Merlin’s abilities? Can someone who’s read up on the source material fact check this for me please. Because I thought the whole “magic is illegal so Merlin has to hide from Arthur” thing was made up for the show, but maybe I’m wrong? Someone help please, thank you! 😊 

Ooohoohoo! Again, no problem with this specifically, but I am reacting. I always thought that Merlin always played a big role in Arthur’s life (not as best friend like in the show) but like an important advisor. I thought Merlin was more than just someone who played a minor role in Arthur’s life. Like, Merlin is such a big figure in pop culture, I could never even imagine that he wasn’t that important in Arthur’s life. Is he more important in the stories than he is to Arthur himself? Is that it? How does that work? I think it might be because I’m a huge Merthur shipper (yes, I know I said I wouldn’t bring ships into this, but I had to for this one), but I really can’t imagine Merlin not being important to Arthur. I mean, I watched this three hour long movie called Merlin starring Sam Neill, and if I’m remembering that correctly, didn’t Merlin raise Arthur? I can’t really remember, but this just feels so wrong to me.

So that's the end of the screenshots, but I do want to mention that the article (which I’ll be linking in the source) talked about how a difference between the story and the show is that in the story, Merlin doesn’t have a family, and just...   HOW SAD??? That is so heartbreaking, and maybe that’s just me imagining the show’s Merlin, our sweet boy who cares about family so fucking much, without a family, and that just makes me sad. But is that true, though? Does the Merlin in the King Arthur tales NOT HAVE A FAMILY??? OOOOOFFF! That’s fuckin rough. 

All right, so this is the end, but if any of you have opinions on the article or on my own opinions, I’d love to hear them. Thanks to anyone who actually read this whole thing. It was kind of long and pointless, but some of what was mentioned brought out such STRONG EMOTIONS from me, I just had to share.
