Alicia @halfofawhole is our artist highlight for today! Read on for her thoughts on art, and you can find all of her artwork here and here!

🎨 When did you start creating art for the Inception fandom, and what is your inspiration?

I will have to fully credit Tenet for bringing me to the Inception fandom—both with their emotional love stories and tender connections, amidst the chaos and mayhem across space and time—it just moves me so much, I can’t help but be inspired to be a part of such a poignant portrayal of the human heart and mind.

During my time in the Tenet fandom, some of my mutuals and I talked a lot about the comparisons between Mal/Cobb and Protagoneil, but it’s not until I had a full Inception rewatch sometime in June 2021 that it hits me just how much they parallel each other, and I love parallels. I started with simple screenshot edits, and then with coloring and fonts, and now I’m creating gifs as well. Thank you Nolan for motivating me to learn Photoshop, so I can finally pour out my feelings for your movies lol.

🎨 Tell us about your creative process, and which part do you enjoy the most about it?

As mentioned, I’m wholly obsessed with visual and textual parallels, and Nolan’s timey wimey movies are such a treasure trove of those. Also, not just with each other but with other media sources as well! I get such a rush whenever my brain is able to catch on an instance of it. So most of the time, it’s really about quickly jotting down the parallel descriptions as soon I’ve thought about it so I won’t forget, their corresponding movie scenes and where they’re located in the movie. After that, it’s a matter of extracting out the screencaps and starting the editing or giffing process.

My favorite part of all this is definitely seeing it all come together at the end, to see the gifs and edits come out exactly how I’ve pictured it in my mind. They are my outlet to capture all the moments that fascinate and resonate with me—kind of an emotional distillation, if you will. I also love listening to music to help me to focus, and most of the time the lyrics will end up as captions for the art itself ahaha

🎨 Link us to your first and latest artwork, and how your style has evolved since then?

Ooo this is a tricky one! All of my early Inception artworks were combined with Tenet and/or Interstellar (the whole thing with parallels asdkfgk), so there’s a lot of them in my Tenet blog here.

But for purely Inception works, my first edit is here (made for the Inception 30-Day Challenge) and my latest one is here (made for the Inception Big Bang 2022, inspired by @rayelovesgreen‘s beautiful story). As for gifs, this is my first one (Sobb!) and this is my latest (elevator Arthur!).

I don’t know if I have any style, but I guess the improvement would be simply not to make the gifs look extremely grainy or twitchy while still keeping within the tumblr gif size limit lol. The edits are much easier to work with, but I love learning how to go from simple coloring to using textures and layer styles.

🎨 What is your absolute favorite piece of art that you've made, and why?

Another tricky one! I love all my artworks for different reasons, they all have their own stories to tell on how they came to be. But I really have to choose, it will be this Inception team name edit (which is also directly inspired from an earlier Nolan movie parallel edit here). It involves a bit of head-cracking to get the name origins/meanings which are most suited to each of the characters, and it’s very fun and satisfying to see them all put together like that.

For gifs, my favorites would be these Ariadne/Beth Harmon and Cobb/Saito parallels. The former is my very first fic-inspired gifset, and the absolute visual and emotional contrast in the latter is just so lovely to me.

🎨 What is something about Inception that you really want to make art for someday, and why?

I’m in constant awe of all those super fancy and shiny gifs and edits out there with all those effects and coloring, and I hope someday I can learn how to make those for my own Inception stuff too! And I also want to make a lot more art for Yusuf, Robert and Ariadne, they deserve all the love!

Where to even start? 😭 It’s the best fandom, hands down. Talent and kindness abound from everyone here, and I definitely owe almost everything, if not all of my art progress here to the Inception fandom. My fellow artists constantly inspire me! And even beyond art itself, this fandom feels like a second home to me apart from real life and I’m just so grateful and thankful for everyone who has made this space such a lovely, welcoming one all the time. Nothing but love for all of you, and thank you for being here. 💖

ooo im intrigued!! more of your thoughts/headcanons??

tbh tbh I’m at my worst on writing anything atm, but on a base level:

1) superficially: a good looking pair and I always keep a ship at a decent level of interest when the actors hang out/work in more than one project together (plus it’s always fun to think of all their movies as different adventures in a dream world gone wrong/weird)

2) untapped potential: one of those ships that I’d love to see one of those specialized giant fics for, because they have an interesting dynamic. Cobb approaches Eames fondly, they have relaxed body language, and they banter warmly. 

3) They honestly give off former coworker exes that slept together/have no bad feelings, and before Cobb fucked it all up in his desperate plan, Eames was interested in Inception, had no hangups apparent even knowing Cobb was a wanted man (which just might be the business, but again, their energy was cordial imo.) Plus I like the idea of Eames, who quips at Arthur’s lack of imagination, dealing with the atomic blast level of Cobb’s imagination. And just like I enjoy the idea of the dynamic of Arthur and Mal, it’s interesting to me how Eames could have interacted with Mal (and indulgently, Cobb/Eames/Mal) (And indulgently indulgently, and he banters pretty well with Saito too, Cobb/Eames/Saito)

4) Back to their first meeting, what kind of (unintentionally?) CHARGED dialogue

“You can rub them together all you want, they’re not gonna breed.”

“How’s your handwriting?” “It’s versatile.” “Good.”

2. fave movie Easy! Definitely Inception -- my mind was blown the first time I saw it, sophomore year of high school, and I've been obsessed ever since. Everything Everywhere All At Once (such a phenomenal movie) is also up there, though!

6. fave trope Oohoohoo another no-brainer for me -- hurt/comfort for sure. In my AO3 bookmarks, my top tag is hurt/comfort, and my second most frequent tag is angst. Not sure what that says about me 😶‍🌫️

7. fave people This feels like a cop-out, but I'd say my favorite people are my friends. I really value the platonic relationships in my life and am grateful to have friends from all the different stages of my life.

#4 for the wips ask game is apartment!verse, what will hypothetically one day be a collection of arthur/eames fic involving apartments, because i really like apartments. this is from a fic i started for inceptionbingo'21 where eames used to live in the apartment arthur uses as his safe house and for ~currently unresolved plot hole reasons~ still has a key.

The toilet flushes, and the bathroom door opens.

Arthur’s got his gun out and pointed before he registers that it’s Eames. “Sorry,” he says sheepishly, putting it down. 

“Not the first time I’ve been greeted like this, darling,” says Eames, trying his best to zip up surreptitiously. Arthur notices, and rolls his eyes and makes a gesture like he’s about to pick his gun back up. 

“Seriously,” says Arthur, seriously, putting the gun away. “What the fuck are you doing in my apartment?”

“Your—?” says Eames. He looks around. “Your apartment, huh.”

“What other explanation could there be for me standing in an apartment that you think you live in?” says Arthur flatly. 

“It’s a dream?” Eames tries. “A for fun dream?”

Arthur frowns. 

“You broke into my apartment because you’re pissed at me again for something,” Eames suggests, doing something with his face as he says it. It isn’t cute. It really isn’t cute. 

Plus, if the breaking in part was ignored, the statement is accurate. Arthur is certainly pissed at Eames again in the current moment, for something. And he’s definitely been pissed at Eames before.

“Yeah I’m pissed at you,” says Arthur, picking up his takeout. It’d fallen on the floor and tipped right over but mercifully none of his curry had spilled. “Come on. I’m having dinner and you’re answering my questions.”

He sets it down on the counter, reaches for a cupboard and opens it and behind him Eames says incredulously, “You put bowls in there?”

Arthur flips around. “Yes? You have a problem with that?”

Eames is squinting. “That’s where the cups go, Arthur. Cups and mugs on top. Bowls go on a lower shelf.” He sounds like he’s in pain. 

“Eames,” says Arthur. “Shut up and microwave rice. It’s in the Tupperware in the fridge.” He starts rustling around in a drawer for spoons.

“You’re going to feed me,” says Eames, pleased.  “I doubt you’d be willing to talk otherwise,” says Arthur, instead of admitting that this is the admittedly batshit culmination of one of his longest-held and most cherished dreams. Twenty-year-old Arthur would be losing his fucking mind at the idea of having dinner in one of his apartment with Eames, regardless of context.

#6 is actually titled the way you see me is not really which i'd forgotten, and explores why arthur would give up so much of his life for cobb when he doesn't seem to like him very much at the point that we meet them in the film.

It’s eleven in the morning, and Arthur’s forking over the last $40 he has to be allowed to check in early. He thinks about the flat, scrubby land they’d passed in the last few days that his mind had dragged a name for out of the annals of sixth grade ecology vocab: chaparral.

He counts out the fives onto the counter, his attention half on the paper-soft wrinkle of the bills in his hand, more than half on Dom slouched and dead-eyed, draped in the corduroy jacket Arthur had bought him for his and Mal’s March anniversary. He’s needed 110% of every part of himself except his libido for the last six days.

Jesus, he thinks like a reflex. How has it only been six days?

He’d bought Mal a perfume that spring as a joke, and he’d seen the delicate bottle left open on the hotel desk when he’d showed up in Los Angeles for Dom, gleaming amber in the afternoon light. They hadn’t waited for the authorities to threaten them. Arthur had grabbed Dom’s hand like he had the right to, and ran.

Later, they'd get off the bus at the kind of highway-side motel that people fall asleep in when they want to be forgotten.

“Have you ever read Neruda, Dom,” says Arthur of five years ago, on the bold threshold of drunk, still a PhD student halfway in love with the young psychology professor whose class his friend is TA-ing for. His wine glass drips condensation onto the skin at the juncture between his thumb and forefinger; he shivers, involuntary. The clamor of the department party is so distant. 

“Without knowing how, or when, or from where,” Dom quotes gravely, swirling his wine in its glass. The part of Arthur’s mind that had wanted to be an English major jumps to wonder why Dom chose to begin there, to forgo the preceding I love you. 

Perhaps he meant it as a hint — lead the audience to fill in the gaps and thus focus on the absent piece themselves. Perhaps, Arthur self-corrects, the curtains were blue because the author’s own curtains were blue. Familiarity. So it goes: one turns to comfort and stability in moments of uncertainty.

7. Fave People: The top answer is definitely my family. I love 'em and they're great. But the more interesting answer is my group of college friends. There are 8 of us who became friends freshman year, and have been friends for nearly 20 years now, and even though we live far apart and only see each other occasionally, we still talk every single day in the group chat. And we've been through so much together. I love them and they mean the world to me.

11. Fave Food: Pizza, and all pizza-related or pizza-flavored things. It's pretty basic, I know! (Side note: I'm going to have pizza for dinner tonight!!! I'm so excited!)

17. Fave Holiday: Christmas. It has a lot to love, but my two favorite parts of it are: egg nog, and wrapping presents.

20. Fave Subject: I wasn't sure if this meant like for a book, or an academic subject, or what. But here goes! I never really had a favorite subject while I was in school. I treated most of them as things to be crossed off a list; get the grade, then move on. But now that I can learn for fun, the one I get most excited about it etymology. (Does this count as its own subject? idk) But I love learning the history of how words come into their meanings.

Kicking off our Inception Artist Highlight event is the immensely talented Anna @mizunoir! Read on for her thoughts on art, and you can find all of her beautiful artwork here!

🎨 When did you start creating art for the Inception fandom, and what is your inspiration?

My first inception artwork was created back in 2018 :D I lurked in the tag before that and lived on AO3 reading the fics haha. Then I encountered @iamanonniemouse​‘s fic, Shattered Souls and it was so beautifully written and it brought me so many emotions that I finally decided it was time for me to draw something. My inspiration nowadays appears randomly. Be it after reading a fic or watching some amazing video/gif edit. Inception is always at the back of my mind.

🎨 Tell us about your creative process, and which part do you enjoy the most about it?

When I see something that screams "inception" to me (be it some art piece, fic, etc), I will try to translate it into an artwork. At first I look for some inspiration, other aesthetically pleasing shots, some pose references, some music to listen to — anything that would help me in the process. Then I just start sketching and eventually get to the colouring stage (which is mostly the most tricky for me :'D). I definitely enjoy the research process the most. The thrill of finding inspiration is the best for me.

🎨 Link us to your first and latest artwork, and how your style has evolved since then?

When it comes to Inception, this would be my latest artwork. The colours in this artwork are definitely more vivid, the background is dark. It is the opposite of what I usually do in my drawings. I also focused on several characters at once, whereas I usually prefer to focus on faces and emotions. I think this contributed to my "evolution", I've become bolder when it comes to trying new things :D

🎨 What is your absolute favorite piece of art that you've made, and why?

aaaaaaaaah tricky, when it comes to my artworks in general, I am quite proud of this one. It was created out of love and admiration for Yuzuru Hanyu and the amazing skills and strength he represents. The stronger my emotions are when I draw, the better the chances are that the drawing will actually turn out the way I wanted it to. It feels like cheating to mention another one but also this artwork — I still really like the composition and overall look of this artwork which is rare for me.

🎨 What is something about Inception that you really want to make art for someday, and why?

I want to draw something that would be more of a “feeling". Kind of an experience to look at but nothing absolutely clear. It won't be popular in the fandom, I guess hah

Spectacular, one of a kind. A great place to work and chill in. I've been in many various fandoms across the years but I've never encountered another fandom as talented as the Inception one. Everyone I encountered was always so nice and great to talk with. I hope we get to stick together for many years in the future! If we do then I am sure the artworks that will be created within the fandom will be real masterpieces. I wish all of you the best, no matter what you do or what fandom you'll join in the future 🎉💖
