I was rereading your post on otome-tique manga and found the divide between y24 and stuff by artists like Riyoko Ikeda very interesting! Recently, I've been reading Kihara Toshie's Mari to Shingo. Kihara is listed as a member of the Year 24 group frequently. If my memory serves, Marishin was published in Lala (which checks out for y24) but her work feels so much lighter than the other y24 stuff I've read. I was wondering if you have a take on where Kihara lies on the y24, epic-drama, and otome-tique scale? (Or if you could list the artists who are true y24, I'm so lost.)

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I often find myself confused by who is and isn't considered y24. Misinformation, namely that Riyoko Ikeda was a member of the group, is so wide-spread. I apologize if you've answered anything like this before. I really enjoy reading your posts!

Hello! Yeah, this is pretty interesting, isn't it, and I'm going to post this answer publicly (I hope you won't mind) because maybe other people are interested, too.

At the very basis of it, what people miss about the Year 24 Group is this: it's a term a group of female manga artists and aspiring manga artists came up with while they were hanging out in a small apartment that Takemiya and Hagio shared, called the Oizumi salon. So, to be really pedantic about it, anyone who wasn't there wasn't a member. It's like how anyone who didn't actually live at Tokiwa-so or hung out there isn't a member of the Tokiwa-so group of manga artists. It's a thing that has a geographic origin.

It's not quite that simple, though, and Takemiya has said that she wanted the term to encompass shojo manga artists who weren't part of the Oizumi salon per se but were nonetheless, at the time, writing works in a similar vein. In particular, the editor Yamamoto Junya recruited many of the year 24 group artists for Shogakukan's Shojo Comic line of magazines (I think I wrote about this in one of my previous posts... Shogakukan was a late-comer to shojo manga, so they had to recruit new talent to write manga for them and let them write pretty much what they wanted), and many of these artists would later go on to write for Hakusensha's Hana to yume/Lala. The Year 24 Group also have in common that they leaned more or less heavily into shonen-ai.

Ikeda Riyoko doesn't fall into any of these categories. She was never at the Oizumi salon, she didn't write for Shogakukan or Hakusensha, she wasn't really into shonen-ai, she just wasn't... in that circle, I guess.

As for a list, I think Japanese wikipedia has a pretty good list.

I hope maybe that was useful. :) It's a somewhat loose cultural/historical term, to be sure, but I think you do need to keep in mind 1. the Oizumi salon, 2. Shojo Comic and Hana to yume/Lala, and 3. shonen-ai when you try to define it.

If you're a Fullmetal Alchemist Fan I highly recommend getting the 20th Anniversary Book (they have an english version too)!! It's an absolute joy. Also, Umibe no Stove was no.1 on 'This manga is amazing' list and after reading it I can say that it's well deserved. The art and storytelling is (chef's kiss). Also the cover sleeve is a lovely papery-texture that is a joy to hold.

Absolutely! My boyfriend and I are essentially KuroKei irl, and he is a huge AkatsukiP.

For disorders, I just know all 3 have Autism. Keito and Kuro are both massive BPD havers for sure. Kuro PTSD haver for sure. Keito probably has OCD?

Keito, I personally hc as transfem and gay, Kuro as transmasc gay, and Souma Nonbinary MLM/NBLM!

Favorite songs personally are definitely both of Keito's solos, Thousand Blossoms Night of the Crimson Moon, Hana Akari no Koibumi, Akatsuki Iroha Uta, and Konjiki Senya Yume Butai.

For stories, admittedly, I haven't read a ton of Akatsuki focused stories? I really adore Succession Match, Crossroad, Repayment Fest, loved them in Cinderella, I have a fondness for Keito & Souma in Meteor Impact as well. I have started Comic World but haven't finished and absolutely need to read Cats and the Camellia Train + Submarine.

𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 are 3 of the various literary genres of the 21st Century. Written in a contemporary style these genres reflect the current technological climate and often don't appeal to the traditional writing rules. In this blog the 3 genres will be compared and contrast through their structures and elements but first I'll give you a knowledge of these 3 modern literary genres.

𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

In this subgenre of literature, the author tells a story using doodles. Instead of using traditional fonts, the text uses font that has a handwritten element. Sketches provide a comedic effect to the story.

Manga is the Japanese word for comics published in Japan. The word itself is comprised of two characters: man, 漫 meaning “whimsical” and ga 画 meaning “pictures.”

In Japan, manga is published in manga magazines such as Shōnen Jump or Shōjo Beat, multiple chapters at time, then republished into tankōbon volumes. These tankōbon volumes are what you would see online or in bookstores out. Manga is printed in black and white usually because of the expense, but sometimes there are special editions that include full color chapters.

Over a couple decades manga has gained traction internationally where it is translated to numerous languages for people to enjoy. There are five main genres of manga you will see: Kodomo, Shōjo, Josei, Shōnen, Seinen. In the world of manga these 5 genres are targeted demographics whereas romance, slice of life, fantasy, horror, action, adventure, etc. are considered as sub-genres.

Kodomo

Kodomo "子供- こども" means children. Kodomo manga are mangas whose target audience are children, both male and female, who are between ages of six and eleven. Kodomo manga consist of basic children’s stories, often with child-friendly themes that put an emphasis on family and friends and have some sort of educational story or a valuable moral lesson to tell.

Shōjo

Also spelt ‘shojo’, ‘shōjo’, or ‘少女’ translates as 'young women' – indicates either an anime or manga aimed at a teen female demographic and the sorts of stories that they tend to prefer – that is, stories that center around the interpersonal relationships of the characters, and the emotional aspects that go along with them.

Shōjo manga typically features young female protagonists. The stories in shōjo manga may be related to romance, magical girls and even comedy. Some of the most popular shojo manga magazines in Japan are Ciao, Ribon and Hana to Yume. As you can see from their websites, all of them are designed to appeal to a young female audience. This audience, however, can include children as young as eight all the way to late-teens.

Josei

Josei / 女性 is the politically correct and most common way to refer to a woman or women in Japanese, but when it comes to anime it isn’t talking about the sex of the characters, but rather it is talking about the genre of the story.

The typical readers are women who is somewhere between her late teens and early forties. The art style in josei tends to be simpler and more realistic than their seinen counterpart. It presents romance in a more down to earth manner as well. Josei often has a wide variety of focuses and themes including romance in the workplace, horror, sisterhood, house life, real life problems and more - it can also fall on the 'sultrier' side of the spectrum and is written in a more complex script with more kanji and less furigana.

Shōnen

Shōnen 少年 means boy and refers to manga marketed to an adolescent and young male audience.

Is typically characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads and the like is often emphasized, however comedies and series with female protagonists are becoming more and more common. Attractive female characters with exaggerated features are also common (fan service). Of the five demographic categories of manga (kodomo, shōnen, shōjo, seinen, and josei), it is the most popular category in the Japanese market.

Seinen

Seinen "青年" is a Japanese word that literally translates to "youth" but is also used to describe a particular genre of manga targeted at young adult men between the ages of 18 and 45.

Although the word "youth" refers to young people, seinen is actually used to refer to older guys. Josei is the female counterpart to seinen. Regarding age groups, the genre of seinen is "located" between gekiga, which is marketed to adults, and shōnen, which is marketed to boys. Similar to josei manga, seinen also features more complex language including kanji that adults would know and recognize (Japanese adults are able to read and write approximately 4000 kanji while children will have learned approximately 2500 by high school).

Graphic novels are storylines presented in the form of comic strips and published as books. Graphic novels, which differ from illustrated fiction in that they use a combination of images and phrases that appear in order across the page. The phrase is applied broadly, including both thematically and in non-fiction works. Several different genres of literature are interconnected in short tales.

Differences in terms of structure

Doodle Fiction

The art style of a doodle fiction is a bit abstract, has a playful touch to make it more fun and is drawn in a hand drawn manner.

Font's used mimic of a handwriting.

Commonly the graphics are just line art and aren't colored.

Manga

Manga are typically illustrated in a specific manner, which is easily recognizable thanks in part to the physical proportions of the characters. In comparison to real people, manga characters' eyes are frequently larger, their lips are narrower, and their chins, noses, and foreheads are all noticeably shorter. Manga facial expressions and hair frequently defy realism, and the hair frequently defies gravity.

Pages are read in the same direction (right to left) as traditional Japanese writing.

Most publications are in black and white.

Graphic Novels

It is read from left to right in the shape of a "Z".

The illustrations are fully colored.

A graphic novel uses the interplay of text and illustrations to tell a story in a comic-strip format.

Often incorporate a range of visual styles, from realistic to cartoonish.

Differences in terms of elements

Origins

On social networking sites like Instagram and Tumblr, the genre of fiction known as "doodle fiction" recently gained popularity. It is made up of brief stories with illustrations that are frequently distributed for free online. Contrarily, manga is a popular genre of Japanese comic books and visual novels that dates back to the 19th century. Aimed frequently at an adult audience, graphic novels are typically longer-form comics that are published as standalone books.

Content

Slice-of-life narratives are frequently given a whimsical or surreal touch in doodle fiction. Manga includes a wide variety of genres, including as comedy, horror, science fiction, and love stories. Although graphic novels can be of any genre, they frequently concentrate more on character development and addressing complicated issues.

Format:

Doodle fiction is frequently published online in a collection of panels or pages, occasionally as a standalone narrative or story. Similarities

Svelato un nuovo trailer di “MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: THE WITCH FROM MERCURY”, accompagnato da una seconda locandina ufficiale e dalla notizia che, la prossima serie animata della celebre saga mecha sci-fi, comincerà ad andare in onda sulle tv giapponesi a partire dal 2 ottobre.

Il video anticipa brevemente il brano “Shukufuku” della band YOASOBI, che farà da sigla di testa per la serie.

So over on Amazon Japan there is this up!!!

It states: Fruits Basket Another 4 (Hana to Yume Comics Special). It's also currently unavailable, but I also saw this posted on Twitter just a bit ago too:

Vampire Knight manga cover series part 1 -Japan

So because there was some interest in the manga covers and international versions and all different covers I make my new post series about these. I start with the Japanese because this is the original.

Disclaimer I'm not a professional, I never studied design or graphics these are just my opinions, research and things I noticed.

So let's get into it!

The old Hana to Yume comics book style.

Information: Hana to Yume is a shojou manga line under Hakusensha Publishing, as you can see they had some big works under their name. These works usually run in their shojou magazines like LaLa. (They do other genres too, but it's not important to us.)

So the Hana to Yume manga style is in the top - in the red, white, blue stripes - the Hana to Yume comics text. In bold red characters the title of the work, under that in blue the author. Under that there's a colourful image, with a coloured background - I think every series has its constant cover background colour - as you can see a little bit later all the VK comics have a red background. This "design" is really uniform and old. All of these mangas started to run in the early 2000s or earlier. There's a new design for Hana to Yume comics. I will talk about that later.

So if you hold one of these books in your hand it has a book coat - I hope this is the right word for this. You can take this coat off the book. I think all Hana to Yume comics has green inside cover - I'm sure VK has. ( I couldn't find a picture about it but it looks bad. Maybe it has a historical value but I just don't take off the coats.) So as you can see on the flaps there are some coloured images - may be made for the magazine or other things... There's also some summary on it of the chapter...I'm not sure, I don't speak Japanese but this is where the VIZ editions differ.

My opinion is that this is overall...not bad but you can see every title is written with the same colour, and the same font. I mean...okay it's uniform but kinda boring...

These are all the original VK series covers. As I told you most of them have a red background. The last picture is the Limited Edition vol. 19 which was made in the new style of the Hana to Yume Comics. The title is in white rectangles which I think would be better with a transparent background. The font of the special edition is simple it reminds me of Times New Roman font set while the others are Arial Bold or I don't know. The images are not bad but the special 10 volume edition looks so much cooler!

So these are the special edition mangas! They don't follow the old nor the new Hana to Yume uniform styles. (I will talk about the new Hana to Yume manga style a little bit later.) The images are so much better, the pictures look so much better without the Hana to Yume style. In every book, all the titles are in different colours which are going well with the images. The author's name is in white, sometimes with colourful outlines. They put the titles in places where they wouldn't cover important parts, also the titles don't have a background as in VK vol.19 Limited Editon.

Let's talk about the new Hana to Yume style...which is better than the old! Tbh I wouldn't prefer if they halfway changes the style of any series...I prefer uniformity...that every volume should look similar and nice next to each other on my bookshelves.

The new Hana to Yume style is the usual red, white and blue stripes but instead of appearing on the entire width of the book, it became smaller and its length less than half of the width of the book. It still has the usual Hana to Yume comics text - but it's their comics line, let it be. The titles got their unique fonts and colours. As you can see in the example picture VKM got its anime fonts and I think Akatsuki no Yona too. The first manga doesn't have an anime yet but you can imagine the vibe of the story just by the font. I think the new Hana to Yume comics style is really nice. I think most of the time they also have a picture on the back of the book too, not as in the old style.

Finally VKM. These are all the volumes, yet. They all follow the rule of the new Hana to Yume style. And yeah they have the anime fonts. Surprisingly the memories are also in English and Japanese but it looks cool. In the last volume, they used blue as the colour of the title but it's going really well with the cover image. Sadly the numbers aren't visible everywhere. But they just look so cool! The last book is the limited edition VKM vol. 4 and I really like its style. It also has an English title on it and it looks nice.

Miscallenius. These are not the manga covers but the light novels, fanbook, artbook and an extra chapter cover. I like that most of them used the anime title fonts in the right colours. This is where the artbook is strange - it already looks international market ready..but we have an English version of the Artbook too. The artbook's font looks really similar to Limited Editon VKM vol.4. I would prefer if all the volumes of the manga had the anime font but I get it the anime came later. But with these extras, the series lost its uniformity...which is sad.
