one thing I will say about 'the ones who live' that has been an Adjustment (at least for me) is shifting rick and michonne's love story from being an anchor against the show's drama to their love story BEING the drama. In twd, richonne became this island, almost a reprieve from whatever drama was happening around them for me. for a good long time there, rick and michonne would have a scene and it'd kinda be a very sweet break from the Saviours or the junk people or whatever else shit was going down. But it's actually so stressful to have their relationship BE the drama in towl, especially since a huge part of what made them so GOOD in twd was how they were so SOLID. I'm not saying there was never any drama between them in twd, or that them being the drama is bad (it's not). As someone who reads academic literature about the mechanics of romance media FOR FUN, I can tell you right now the ones who live knows EXACTLY what it's doing and is doing it so well (catch me screaming about the BARRIERS this show keeps building)..... it's causing me pain. like, do you guys know how much the trope of, "I'm gonna pretend I don't care about you to protect you/well I won't accept that" means 2 me??? mother of fuck. can't believe the romance is the drama in the romance drama show. rude. I owe you my life.
