hi lovely ! it's milunalupin :)
could i please request remus + "i waited for you" ? 🫶🏼✨
hello my friend, ty for the request!! im working on my big boy fic for james rn but i wanted a little bit of remus as a break <3 (wc: 691)
“You smell good.”
Remus looks at the man taking a seat across from him, appalled by such a comment. Sirius looks equally stunned saying it, wrinkled nose a mirror of Remus’.
“Thank you?”
Sirius shakes his head like this is the wrong response.
“Why do you smell good?”
Remus rolls his eyes, keeping his posture aloof. “Took my annual bath last night.”
Sirius scoffs. “‘Bout time. Your stench was getting harsh on my delicate canine senses.”
That pulls a laugh from Remus, however small.
By the door, he sees you squeezing into the packed pub, side-stepping between rowdy groups of people and looking around. You’re wearing a mid-length skirt, and when you spot the two boys in their booth it swishes around each hasty step.
“Hi,” you breathe, “I’m sorry. They made me start inventory and then I just had to shower and—” Remus stands to offer you some seclusion via the walled side of the bench seat. You wave your rambling apologies away, winded from running around all day. “Nevermind. I need a drink, Remus. Come with?”
“Sit,” he demands softly, “I’ll fetch it.”
You do as you’re told, hanging onto Remus’ words like a takeout fortune, foolishly hopeful that they mean something. If Sirius didn’t demand so much attention, you’d probably turn them over in your head a lot longer, but he really, really does.
“Think you can show us lads up, eh missy?”
Smothering a smile, you stare Sirius down with false bluntness.
“Yep. You’re lucky I even came at all, honestly.”
Sirius laughs, spinning his glass, half empty and through sweating. You realize his drink is the only one on the table.
“I’m surprised you did. You’re so popular, but you stay humble for us.”
“I have to,” you agree, “I could’ve been with people a lot cooler than you guys, but I just felt so bad. You and Remus don’t have anyone else to hang out with now that James is married.”
“Moony, we’re being bullied,” says Sirius, raising his voice a touch to reach the boy in question. Remus places two new drinks on the maple tabletop, sliding in close to you.
“I’m sure we deserve it,” he says, passing one of the fresh glasses off to you. “We’re turning into losers.”
You bring the cool glass to your lips, relaxing further into the familiar booth cushion and eyeing Remus’ new drink.
“Is that your second?”
Remus shakes his head. “My first.”
He tracks your brows as they pull together. They’d been here almost a half hour already.
“I waited for you,” he explains, smiling gently. Your stomach leaps.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
Sirius jumps in, stepping on Remus’ toes.
“That’s what I told him,” he says, “I said you’re too sweet to mind.”
“Don’t listen to him,” Remus says, following up Sirius’ heel. His voice is still wearing the crooning silk he tends to direct towards you. “It’s the polite thing to do. Sirius just has poor manners.”
Across the way, the man in question sputters objections while you try not to laugh.
“I—I’m impolite? I’m impolite! Please. She’s the only one at this table who was late to a hangout one block away from her apartment. I had every right to drink my sorrows away.”
Remus ducks his head and shoots you a cat-like grin, but Sirius isn’t done.
“And it’s not being polite if you’re motivated by a massive crush, Moony, by the way. D’you know he’s wearing cologne?”
You stare at Sirius, because the alternative of looking at Remus (who is flushed beyond measure) is akin to a death sentence.
“Yes,” you admit. You’d smelled it on him when he stood up earlier, a fresh earthy scent that was too sharp to be soap. Sirius points at your face like he’s caught you.
“See? The only people who notice a guy wearing cologne are his miserable best mates, and girls who want to be waited on.” Remus shoots him a glare and he throws his hands up as if to say, sue me. “I’m just helping.”
Remus curses through an exhale and drops his head into his hands.

Top 100 Women Directors.
Ella Kemp takes a deep-dive into our newest all-time stats addition—the top 100 films directed by women—and finds, to nobody’s surprise, that Agnès Varda is indisputably the GOAT.
There are countless ‘best of’ lists on Letterboxd to track your progress against; some are maintained by our staff, while others are contributed by passionate members. If you’ve upgraded to Pro or Patron level, there’s a section on your all-time stats page (accessible directly from your profile) where we’ve gathered twelve key lists against which you can track your progress at a glance (example below), and we’ve also added ‘Completed Collections’ for Patrons, showing all franchises of three or more films that you’ve seen in their entirety (excluding unreleased entries).
Tumblr media
In the interests of promoting a diverse range of titles, we’ve recently added a Top 100 Women Directors list to your all-time stats, compiled by Jack Moulton and ranked by overall weighted average rating. In other words, these are the female-directed (and female-identifying-directed) films that you, the Letterboxd community, have chosen as the best.
To celebrate, we invited Letterboxd member, writer and Girls on Tops photographer Ella Kemp to cast her eye over the current list (it’s bound to change in future based on new ratings cast).
Encompassing thousands of votes to meticulously rate and root for the greatest films we have courtesy of women directors, Letterboxd’s newest all-time list offers a sobering dissection of the way we consume movies—and how much we recognize the women responsible for these works.
At first glance, a scroll through the list boasts a generous handful of posters designed in the last couple of years. Five features released in the past twelve to eighteen months have made it straight to the top 20 (Portrait of A Lady on Fire, The Farewell, Booksmart, Lady Bird and Capernaum) with one of those films—not even publicly released in cinemas yet, but making waves at festivals around the world—already sitting at number two. That’s the power of Céline Sciamma and her Portrait.
Tumblr media
Céline Sciamma’s ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ (2019).
Diving deeper, Sciamma’s top-tier triumph exemplifies a few key patterns. She returns at number 64 with Tomboy, reminding us what a great shame it is that her excellent feature Girlhood didn’t make the list, but confirming that France appears to be one of the best countries in the world for women to make movies: the list comprises 23 French features, which, considering the US’s oft-perceived monopoly on the film industry, feels monumental.
But of course, it’s not accidental either. This year sadly marked the passing of Agnès Varda, indisputably the GOAT. She stands proud as the most prolific contributor with six features, two in the top 20. To grieve, to remember, at least we can always keep watching.
Another singular trailblazer is Scotswoman Lynne Ramsay. She has four entries, but what’s most impressive is that these are, well, all the feature films she’s made to date. Her fourth entry, Morvern Callar, sneaks in at number 100.
Elaine May and Chantal Akerman both have three entries, which may come as no surprise to cinephiles, but it’s also the same number of entries as Japanese animator Naoko Yamada (whose A Silent Voice sits in sixteenth place on our list). This reveals an open-minded slant, one that acknowledges the widely perceived touchstones but also embraces further-reaching works from lesser-known artists. Five features are Japanese, four are German, three Italian, and three Indian.
Tumblr media
Naoko Yamada’s ‘A Silent Voice’ (2016).
The lean still remains very much with the US, and yet few films on the list break records for eye-watering budgets. The Matrix, courtesy of the Wachowskis, was made for $63 million, and Shrek, co-directed by Vicky Jenson, had a budget of $60 million. Aside from these two, projects on the list seldom had more than $10–15 million to get the job done.
When looking at the list’s omissions, one almost unanimous absence is that of the highest-grossing films of all time directed by women. No Sleepless in Seattle, no Frozen, no Fifty Shades of Grey. No Nora Ephron, No Nancy Meyers. No Ava DuVernay. It’s a peculiar gap, as the influence of these writers and filmmakers is hardly one to be contested. And, to close the circle on big budgets, $120-150-million-wielding Patty Jenkins is also absent. The highest-grossing film directed by a woman (with no male directing partner)—a cool $821.8 million at the global box office—did not make the cut.
On this topic, there are sixteen films co-directed by women on the list. A co-directing mention is a crucial credit. It’s like the trust exercises that used to be taught in school drama classes—how would they work if one party wasn’t there to catch the other as they fell? What’s the point in being brave if you don’t also have some kind of promise of safety? Partners need each other, and these directors needed partners to reach the heights they did. City of God, co-directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, was nominated for four Oscars, and yet Meirelles was still the only filmmaker credited at the ceremony. The Academy chose to disregard Lund, but our list does not. There are five female co-directors in the top 20. One of the highest-grossing films on the list, Shrek, would not be what it is without Vicky Jenson.
Also curious: Palme d’Or winner Jane Campion makes the list, best director Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow does not. Overall, the list shows a vast body of skill, a crop of familiar names, some deeply felt absences and—hopefully—a whole lot of additions to watchlists. Further names that deserve to be sought out, in no particular order, include Mabel Normand, Maya Deren, Josephine Decker, Jennie Livingston, Mia Hansen-Løve, Dee Rees, Joanna Hogg, Gurinder Chadha, Barbara Hammer, and directors with new films soon to be released: Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Niki Caro (the live-action Mulan) and Kasi Lemmons (Harriet).
Tumblr media
Chantal Akerman’s ‘Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce 1080 Bruxelles’ (1975).
Writing this breakdown gave me plenty of homework, and it shed light on a lot of works that I’m yet to catch up with. At first I thought it pretty normal to not have seen as many on the list as I would have liked, taking into account my age, access and time, but the further I went, the more names cropped up that I didn’t recognize, and the more I recalled my three years studying film at university and not having learned anything about so many of these women.
I should know more names. I should have been set more assignments regarding more of these names. I can do more, but so too can those above me, those who taught me and continue to teach others, about who makes the films that are worth learning about. We now have lists such as this one—it’s high time we start to properly use them.

Working at my local library over the years has been a perfect fit for my varied interests, particularly literary ones. In 2004, I began a book discussion group focused on the mystery genre. This Mystery Book Club has evolved over the years and continues to meet at the library today.
In the 15 years since the group first met, the Mystery Book Club has read more than 150 mysteries, suspense thrillers, and a few true crime tales. And recently, I thought it was time to celebrate with a look back at all the titles we read. Follow along as I take you through the years in a look back at “15 Years of Mysteries.”
The Mystery Book Club I started officially launched in September 2004. Our small group originally met on Thursday nights at 7:00pm for an hour-long discussion. The very first book we read was Carolyn G. Hart’s The Christie Caper. Originally written in 1991, The Christie Caper is the 7th book in the Death on Demand mystery series and an homage to Agatha Christie. I thought it would be a fitting start to our tour of the genre.
Book by Carolyn G. Hart
Book by Ellis Peters
Book by Margaret Truman
Book by Dorothy L. Sayers
September 2004 selection
The Christie Caper by Carolyn G. Hart
Synopsis:  Annie and Max Darling host a week-long celebration of Agatha Christie’s posthumous 100th birthday at their Death on Demand bookstore. When a despised critic shows up and spoils the celebration, two attempts are made on his life. The Darlings investigate hoping to prevent a murder. Lots of Christie trivia are included throughout the novel.
Thoughts:  When I began The Poisoned Martini blog, this was one of the first books I revisited for a review. By my count, I believe it was the 23rd post on the site. It’s one of the few books I would consider re-reading again. Probably more for the nostalgia factor than anything else.
  October 2004 selection
A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters
Synopsis:  This medieval murder mystery set in the 12th century sees Brother Cadfael use his knowledge of herbs and observation skills to solve the murder of a landowner. Published in 1977, it was the first of 21 novels featuring the Benedictine monk.
Thoughts:  When selecting books for the initial launch of the Mystery Book Club, this one was high on my list of must-reads. I was familiar with the TV series, Cadfael, starring Derek Jacobi, but hadn’t seen any of the episodes. The next best thing was to read the books that the series was based on. Naturally, I picked the first book to feature Brother Cadfael. It’s interesting to note—as I later found out—that this particular book is the basis for the 3rd episode of the 2nd season of the TV series. I never formally reviewed the book for The Poisoned Martini, but it did feature as part of a 2014 post about weeding books and the rise of ebooks.
  November 2004 selection
Murder at Ford’s Theatre by Margaret Truman
Synopsis:  Part of Truman’s Capital Crimes series, published in 2002, this one focuses on the murder of a woman who worked for a powerful senator. Two D.C. cops investigate the crime and the attempts to cover it up.
Thoughts:  The first Margaret Truman book I ever read was Murder at the Cathedral. I enjoyed it and went on to read several others of hers before picking this title for the Mystery Book Club. This one was a solid read, but I do prefer the books featuring Mac Smith and Annabel Reed. I should revisit these novels, many featuring famous Washington, D.C. landmarks, as I realize I’ve never reviewed one for my blog.
  December 2004 selection
Busman’s Honeymoon by Dorothy Sayers
Synopsis:  In this 1937 classic, Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane have married and travel to Talboys, their new county getaway where a man is found dead at the bottom of the cellar stairs.
Thoughts:  Ten years prior, I had seen a stage production of this at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The play had been my first exposure to Sayers’ work and I’d thought it ingenious at the time. Having seen it performed as definitely a plus when it came time to reading it. The howdunit part of the novel was easier to visual. Surprisingly, I’ve never done a review of this one either.
***
And that’s it for Year One. Stay tuned for a look at the years that followed as I look back at the more than 150 books read in 15 years of mysteries.

Fargo Season 4: The Gang War Between The Chicago Outfit and The Policy Kings
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The following contains spoilers for Fargo season 4.
The FX series Fargo begins every episode of every season with a disclaimer that the stories are true but the names are changed. This gives the show a lot of leeway in picking its stories and how to present them. Fargo season 4 is set in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1950. Two mobs in one small city make a truce, which appears to be traditional in that part of town. It’s been done for at least two generations. Loy Cannon, played by Chris Rock, boss of an African American crime family, trades his youngest son Satchel (Rodney Jones), with the youngest son of Mafia family boss Donatello Fadda (Tommaso Ragno) to keep the peace. Donatello dies shortly after, in the usual unusual circumstances. There is no evidence of this kind of underworld trade in any of the true crime books I personally own, and have found no references to any books which reference it in an internet search. There was a beef in town which resulted in Mafia deaths and racial skirmishes in the Midwest crime world. They are unconnected but fill in some of the gaps.
But the central conflict in Fargo appears to be, at least inspired by, a crime war in the Midwestern city of Chicago where the Bronzeville area’s Policy Kings came up against Sam Giancana’s The Outfit. This is the same outfit Al Capone once ran, but the specific turf war came in the late 1940s and ended in the early 1950s, exactly when Fargo is set.
Sam Giancana is a fairly well-known crime figure whose fingerprints have dusted such high-profile hits as the JFK assassination and the attempted whack on Fidel Castro. He was one of the CIA’s “Family Jewels.” Giancana started out as a getaway driver for the 40 Thieves gang, which started out by busting heads for Chicago’s political bosses. He was the first member of the wild 42 Gang to get pulled into the majors and the very first thing he did when he came to bat for The Outfit was go after the Policy Kings’ numbers racket.
Fargo’s crime history holds that there were two gangs during the early part of the 20th Century, but the African American gang had been running the area’s policy rackets since 1918 and expanded into surrounding neighborhoods during the “Roaring 20s.” Black street gangs formed in the Bronzeville area after the 1919 race riots with Irish gangs. After the riots, the gangs became go-betweens for tourists looking for the best food, a good time, or the hottest jazz clubs, of which the neighborhood was loaded. They also showed out-of-towners where to gamble, get laid, or score drugs. The Policy Kings recruited from street talent, just like the Outfit chose Giancana.
The numbers racket is an illegal street lottery where people pick three numbers which are determined by a random drawing the next day, usually the last three numbers of racetrack totals. You place bets with a bookie and runners transport betting slips and cash to the numbers bank. In the Black section of Chicago it was called the Wheel Game, and the Policy Kings set talented gang members up with wheels of their own. The wheels had two drawings a day, one in the afternoon and another at night, bets were picked up every two hours by wheel men. Bookies got 25 percent of their bets. The bank got the rest. It was a no-lose proposition for the house.
During World War II, the epicenter of the Bronzeville area, Grand Boulevard, housed the Black upper class and celebrities on the east side and the struggling citizens on the west. The Policy Kings was stitched together by a tailor named Edward P. Jones, who went in with his brothers on a Wheel. Edward started as a slip runner and borrowed the $15,000 to start his own wheel, called the Harlem-Bronx, from his mother. Jones’ first runner was Teddy Roe, who was working as a tailor in the shop, which was really a front for a policy wheel. Born in Galliano, Louisiana, and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Roe had been going back and forth between legitimate work and bootlegging, and could pass for white according to the book, Robin Hood of the Hood: The Life and Times of Teddy Roe, Policy King by Ron Chepesiuk and Michael Roe. He would go on to build an illegal gambling empire on Chicago’s South Side.
The street lottery was protected by politicians Edward Joseph Kelly and Patrick Nash. Chicago’s “Big Twelve Policy Syndicate” was organized in 1932. Energized by the Black vote, the city’s Democratic Party gave tacit approval the next year. By 1938 the Policy Kings were making $10,000 a day. Al Capone noticed their success but left the Black neighborhoods in the hands of the Jones Brothers. By 1946, The Policy Kings were pulling in more than $25 million a year.
Racketeers routinely gave back to the community. This bought them goodwill, and more than its investment in terms of alibis. Roe was nicknamed “The Robin Hood of the Southside” because he paid hospital bills for newborns, funeral tabs for the dead, and was known to hand out $50 bills to the homeless. But also, because he expanded into legitimate businesses and hired locally. Like the Chris Rock character’s operation on Fargo, The Policy Kings were the Black community’s banks and employers in Chicago.
The numbers game generated a lot of money to poor neighborhoods and the Policy Kings kept it there, investing in car dealerships, supermarkets and churches. The Jones brothers bought the Ben Franklin department store which employed 150 people, and was also convenient as a front their policy bank. They bought apartment buildings, first on the South Side and then in more affluent neighborhoods. They also lived large. Eddie Jones’ wife Lydia was a former Cotton Club chorus line beauty queen. She wore satin or mink every day.
Jones and Giancana were cellmates at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana. Giancana was doing time for bootlegging. Jones was serving 28 months for tax evasion, a rap he took to take the heat off his family. The Jones brothers had been working with the other cellmate, Billy Skidmore, who ran 19 casinos inside Chicago’s red-light district. Prodded by Skidmore, a proud Jones told Giancana he ran the biggest of thirty policy games in the city. When Giancana got out of jail in 1946, he brought the idea of taking over the Black policy games to Paul “The Waiter” Ricca, who had been the de facto boss since Capone’s imprisonment, but he and future Outfit boss Tony Accardo, also known as “Joe Batters” and “Big Tuna,” were caught up in a Hollywood labor investigation.
Giancana and “Fat” Leonard Caifano, a bookmaker and loan shark, visited Jones in prison to get him to put up the money for a vending machine operation. Jones gave his brother George orders to bankroll it. Within six months, they had 12,000 jukeboxes, cigarette and pinball machines, and a crew of about 500. The machines were legal, but the soda, candy, records and cigarettes which were in them fell off the backs of trucks.
The mob, seeing earning potential in the African American neighborhood, kidnapped Jones in May of 1946, and demanded $100,000 and a promise he hand over the policy rackets as ransom. Jones was held for five days and released at the corner of Loomis and 62nd Street, with adhesive tape over his eyes, and cotton stuffed in his ears. Roe paid the money, but decided to keep the rackets for himself. Jones moved his whole family to Mexico, though they could have moved to the villa in France where their mother Harriet lived.
Roe did not like or trust the white mob. He was respected as a crook with honor because he refused to give in to the Outfit, stiffing the mobsters their street tax. Ricca and Accardo didn’t take interest in the Black policy rackets until November of 1946, when Tom Manno drove them to the operation’s basement counting room which was filled with piles of money stacked to the ceiling. Accardo gave the order to take control of the policy business by January 1947.
Caifano tried to work out a partnership agreement, but Roe refused to even meet with him. He never backed down from a fight, vowing never knuckle under to any white gangster. A dozen mobsters from The Outfit and an unknown number of Roe’s gang were killed in the gang battle by the end of 1946. Caifano took over gambling parlors and set up bookie joints in the Black wards. Roe’s house was bombed, his wife and children were shot at, his collectors were beaten. Roe became a living legend in the Black community just for surviving, and it was good for business as the betting grew as part of neighborhood unity.
Giancana personally met with Roe. He offered him $250,000 in cash to quit the policy rackets. Roe told him “I’ll die first.” Giancana reasoned he “just might.” On June 19, 1951, Fat Lenny tried to kidnap Roe. He and his brother, Marshall Caifano, along with Vincent Ioli flagged down Roe and his three off-duty Chicago-cop bodyguards. Fat Lenny got shot in the head when they tried to pull Roe into the car. Bill Baxter, one of the off-duty cops, reputedly fired the fatal shot, but Roe took the rap.
The Chicago Police Department booked Roe for murder and put him in Cook County jail. After hearing reports he might be executed, they put him under extra heavy guard and Roe’s meals were prepared outside the jail in case someone tried to poison him. Roe was also charged with conspiracy to violate the state anti-gambling statute. He was denied bail six times before and during his trial. For the murder charge, Roe pleaded self-defense. His defense team linked the prosecution to the mob and Roe beat the case. Roe told reporters “They’ll have to kill me to take me” when he left the courtroom.
But Roe didn’t beat mob rule. Lenny Caifano was a made man, and his brother Marshall Joseph Caifano, was a capo. After Caifano’s killing, Giancana waged a shakedown war on Chicago’s Black bookmakers. Roe was hiding out in his mansion on South Michigan Avenue. He hired a small army for protection, according to Kings: The True Story of Chicago’s Policy Kings and Numbers Racketeers by Nathan Thompson. On Aug. 1, 1952, doctors told Roe he had incurable cancer. He dismissed his bodyguard. On August 4, 1952, he left his house dressed in a three-piece suit and hat. Roe was hit in the back, face and jaw by five blasts from a 12-gage shotgun before he reached the other side of the street. He did not have a chance to pull out his revolver. He died slumped against a tree outside 5239 S. Michigan Ave.
“The king is dead,” Chicago newspapers reported. Roe’s was the biggest funeral Chicago’s Black community had since Jack Johnson, the first African American world heavyweight boxing champ, died in 1946. Roe was laid out in a $5,000 casket. He had an 81-car funeral procession. Thousands of people lined the streets.
Police said they had no clues in the killing. They disagreed on whether the Outfit hired hit men or if it was other racketeers. In the early 1970s, Giancana was caught on an FBI wire tape admitting Roe “went out like a man. He had balls. It was a fuckin’ shame to kill him.”
After the last Policy King was gunned down, Giancana took over the Policy racket and began selling Heroin. The largest street gang in the neighborhood by that time was the Deacons, who could do little to protect the neighborhood.

congrats on 150!! for your celebration can I please have 🫧 with sirius black + “oh, that’s new”? Maybe reader got a tattoo without telling him and he likes it
thank you for requesting! 🩷 (wc: 664)
Sirius can’t stop staring at you in the sauna towel you’re wearing. You’ve both been in for several minutes now, and you’re relaxing more and more into the wood bench. He’s not sure he’s ever seen your shoulders so far away from your ears, and he’s definitely never seen your hair pulled off your neck the way that it is.
It gives him too much skin to work with, visually speaking. You’re completely free and clear of any curtains, your skin sticky with dew, legs sprawling and bare. The two of you make a happy sight.
As the air thins down, you stretch up and ladle more water over the hot rocks. Sirius watches a bead of sweat race down the back of your neck with rapt attention. He loses sight of it when he spots your tattoo.
“Oh,” he breathes, a strange twisting in his chest, “that’s new, yeah?”
You hum breezily, pouring one more generous scoop onto the hissing stones before giving him your questioning eyes.
“What’s new?” Sirius brings a hand up to absently rub at his own bare nape, and you seem to catch his meaning, sweeping your fingers over it bashfully. “Oh, that. Yeah. You’ve seen it haven’t you?”
He shakes his head no. “When was this?”
“Umm,” you dally. “Like a week and some ago? I wasn’t really planning it at all.”
Sirius watches you carefully, perhaps reading a small bit too far into your rosy flush. The air in the steam room is thick and hot now, thanks to you, which could easily be the cause. Still, you’ve retreated from him slightly, holding your arms nervously over your torso.
“Can I see?” Sirius requests, beckoning you to his side of the room. You oblige him, standing and relocating to the spot on his right.
You face your back to him, pushing away nonexistent baby hairs to clear the view. Sirius tentatively takes your neck under his fingers, holding you still.
It’s worse up close, which is to say dangerous for his health. He can’t believe what he’s looking at.
“You got a star,” he says distantly, not quite trusting his voice to keep steady. A star.
Your head falls forward and Sirius marvels at the way your tattoo stretches, wraps tight over your vertebrae.
“Like I said, it was a spur-of-the-moment thing.”
“Yeah,” he breathes, “right.”
Reluctantly, Sirius peels himself away from you, returning stiffly to the cedar bench. His skin feels alive, thrumming with heat.
You settle back beside Sirius instead of returning to your bench.
“Is it what you hoped?” he asks, half to break the tension and half because he’d really like to know.
You nod, and Sirius’ eyes train down to the black shape again, unable to resist now that it’s right there.
“Yeah. I always wanted something for my neck, but I never could decide what.” You’re picking at your towel wrap awkwardly, sickly aware of Sirius’ hot gaze on you. You knew for a fact he hadn’t seen the tattoo yet, and you were almost dreading when he'd finally catch sight of it.
“I like it,” he says in passionate agreement. “I really, really like it.”
Your lips twitch into a smile, and you throw a sideways glance his way. “Yeah?” He nods avidly, and you release a relieved laugh. “I was hoping you would.”
“Can I see it one more time?” he asks. You laugh some more.
“Um, okay. Yeah.”
Sirius stares at the ink for another long minute, long enough for you to begin fidgeting with impatience.
“Yeah,” he concludes finally, “you’ll have to show this off more. Keep your hair up like this, maybe?”
Puffing in amusement, you peek over your shoulder shyly. “If you say so.”
“I say so,” he laughs. “I definitely say so.”
Stomach swooping with butterflies, you face forward again, trying to retain some semblance of composure.
“Well, okay then.” You sit back, relaxing some, milling in the warmth you feel inside and out.

thank you for reading! xx

Donald Trump orders creation of 'national heroes' garden

Media caption“This monument will never be desecrated,” President Trump said at Mount Rushmore
US President Donald Trump has ordered the creation of a “National Garden of American Heroes” to defend what he calls “our great national story” against those who vandalise statues.
His executive order gives a new task force 60 days to present plans, including a location, for the garden.
He insists the new statues must be lifelike, “not abstract or modernist”.
A number of US statues have been pulled down since the police killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd in May.
Monuments linked to the slave-owning Confederacy during the Civil War in America have been especially targeted in the nationwide protests ignited by the death of Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
President Trump has defended Confederate symbols as a part of American heritage.
In a speech to mark Independence Day at Mount Rushmore, he condemned the anti-racism protesters who toppled statues.
He said America’s national heritage was being threatened – an emotive appeal for patriotism.
The garden – to be in a place of natural beauty near a city – is to be opened by 4 July 2026, Mr Trump’s executive order says. State authorities and civic organisations are invited to donate statues for it.
President Trump’s choice of historical figures to be commemorated in the garden is likely to be controversial.
The list of “historically significant” Americans includes predictably Founding Fathers like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, but also frontiersman Davy Crockett, evangelical Christian preacher Billy Graham, Ronald Reagan and World War Two heroes Douglas MacArthur and George Patton.
There will also be statues of African American civil rights campaigners Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr.

Image caption Americans celebrate the French Marquis de Lafayette as a national hero
Controversially, Mr Trump includes non-Americans who “made substantive historical contributions to the discovery, development, or independence of the future United States”.
So the garden can have statues of Christopher Columbus, Junipero Serra and the Marquis de Lafayette.
Columbus and the Spanish Catholic missionary Serra are far from heroic for Native Americans, because their “discoveries” led to the enslavement and exploitation of indigenous people by white colonists.
US must confront its Original Sin to move forward
The stories behind the statues targeted in protests
America’s early economic development also relied on slavery – which makes some of the traditional national heroes dubious for African Americans.
The Marquis de Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military commander, led American troops in key battles against the British in the American Revolution.
Symbolic response to protesters
Donald Trump’s proposed garden offers insight into who the president considers worthy of celebration. There are America’s founders, joined by 19th-Century frontiersmen glorified in old Disney television dramas, World War Two generals and slavery abolitionists.
Republican Party icon Ronald Reagan is the only president from the past 150 years, and Antonin Scalia, whose primary legal legacy is penning scathing conservative dissents to majority opinions, is the only Supreme Court justice. It’s the kind of list that could largely be gleaned from grade-school history books of the 1950s, an era that suffuses the president’s politics of nostalgia for “American greatness”.
In his Mount Rushmore speech, the president lashed out at those he accused of wanting to destroy the nation’s cultural heritage. The garden is his symbolic response. At a time when the president is defending statues that honour Civil War rebels who fought US soldiers, Mr Trump is making an affirmative case for those who he believes embody the US values of patriotism, inspiration and courage. While many Americans are now reviewing US history with a critical eye, the garden would be a glossy tribute to the president’s view of American “exceptionalism”.
It will surely antagonise the president’s critics, who see him as a divisive and ill-suited arbiter of American values. It also portends an autumn presidential campaign of pitched cultural warfare.
What did President Trump say in his speech?
It was a highly symbolic setting for the speech: Mount Rushmore, in South Dakota, features the carved faces of four US presidents, two of whom – George Washington and Thomas Jefferson – were slave-owners.
It also stands on land that was taken from the indigenous Lakota Sioux by the US government in the 1800s.

Image caption President Trump vowed to protect monuments against what he called a “left-wing cultural revolution”
President Trump railed against the “cancel culture” of those who toppled monuments during recent anti-racism protests.
He condemned those who targeted statues as “angry mobs”.
Mr Trump accused protesters of “a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children”. “We will not be silenced,” he said.
The president, who has been heavily criticised for his handling of the US coronavirus pandemic, made little reference to the disease that has now claimed almost 130,000 American lives.

Media captionBlack Americans were still enslaved for 89 years after American “Independence Day”
The US recorded its largest single-day rise in coronavirus infections on Friday, bringing the total to more than 2.5 million – the most of any country.
Masks and social distancing were not mandatory at the Mount Rushmore event, despite warnings by health officials.
Native American groups criticised Mr Trump’s visit for posing a health risk, and for celebrating US independence in an area that is sacred to them.
Many Native Americans do not celebrate Independence Day because they associate it with the colonisation of their tribal homelands and the loss of their cultural freedoms.

Forget Kyler’s Law Blog: 10 Reasons Why You No Longer Need It
Practicing regulation is very serious service. Yet that doesn't suggest there isn't a great deal regarding it that's rather interesting, fun, as well as even sometimes amusing.
Every once in a while, it is a great concept to tip far from the solemnity of everything as well as think about the lighter side of our service. Accordingly, we've assembled the leading 10 fun facts regarding attorneys and the technique of regulation.
# 1: How several legal representatives does it take?
There are presently 1.34 million attorneys in the United States. The entire populace of the U.S. is 327,522,508. That suggests that there is approximately one legal representative for every 240 people in this nation. With numbers like that, you wouldn't think it would certainly be so hard to locate clients.
# 2: The first woman ... attorney
The very first lady in U.S. background to become an attorney was an Iowan called Arabella Mansfield. She had to file a Types of Lawyers claim against the http://edition.cnn.com/search/?text=lawyer State Bar of Iowa in order to rest for its bar exam-- an opportunity that had actually been specifically scheduled for males. Birthed in 1844, Ms. Mansfield passed the bar examination and also was confessed to the Iowa Bar in 1869. The law had always been the province of males, females started to research and teach the regulation during Ms. Mansfield's era due to the fact that so numerous males were called off to fight in the Civil War.
# 3: Out of the mouths of infants
Nearly 150 years later, one more woman is positioned to ruin barriers within the technique of law. A 15-year old lady from Ohio called Danya Hamad is reportedly on the right track to come to be the youngest legal representative currently exercising in the United States. Ms. Hamad has moderate objectives. In her own words, "My goal is to come to be the youngest attorney in America as well as from there I want to alter the globe."
She will certainly not, however, be the youngest legal representative to ever before exercise law in the States. That distinction comes from a man called Stephen Baccus that graduated from Miami Law in 1986.
# 4: That's not fair
Considering that 2002, the Institute for Legal Reform has surveyed corporate litigators as well as elderly execs to rate the litigation environment in each state within the U.S. The survey is aimed at determining the reasonableness and also justness of lawsuits techniques. The five states that rate as one of the most sensible and also fair? South Dakota, Vermont, Idaho, Minnesota, and New Hampshire. And also the least? Florida, California, Illinois, Missouri, and Louisiana.
# 5: Any correlation?
Interestingly, the state that was figured out to have the most justness and also reasonableness in its litigation climate virtually has the fewest number of attorneys per head of any type of state. Just Arizona as well as South Carolina have fewer lawyers per capita than South Dakota, which boasts simply 22.2 legal representatives for each 10,000 citizens.
Tumblr media
In case you're questioning, the District of Columbia has the highest possible number of lawyers per head. In fact, Washington, D.C. has 788.1 legal representatives per 10,000 citizens.
# 6: Who stated lawyers are remarkable?
There are a surprising variety of celebrities that participated in legislation school. Among them are John Cleese (Monty Python), Geraldo Rivera, Ben Stein, Gerard Butler, Jerry Springer, Ozzie Nelson (Ozzie & Harriet), Jeff Cohen (Goonies), and John Saviano (The Wonder Years). Think of having your closing disagreement provided by Geraldo and also Jerry Springer!
# 7: Worth their weight in gold
Attorneys in America gain vastly various salaries relying on where they live. While top attorneys are supposedly billing upwards of $1,500 per hour, that is certainly not the norm. Throughout the country, lawyer wages are very dependent on place.
The highest possible incomes for attorneys are, not surprisingly, earned in California, New York, and also Washington, D.C., where attorneys average $168,693 per year. In Arizona, attorneys in the Phoenix cosmopolitan area gain a standard of $65.44 per hour, while legal representatives throughout the state standard just $49.22 per hour.
# 8: How a costs ends up being a regulation
In the mid-19th century, nearly 80% of Congressional members were attorneys. Today, however, legal representatives account for fewer than 40% of Congress people.
# 9: Lawyering isn't for everyone
Practicing regulation is such a labor of love. Regulation institution isn't easy, passing the bar examination isn't simple, and practicing legislation is possibly the hardest thing of all. Maybe not remarkably then, attorneys leave the profession constantly. Whether it is to end up being a pastry chef or an author (guilty as billed), lawyers appear to find wonderful success in various other occupations.
# 10: They truly enjoy us
Probably even more than any type of other profession, legal representatives appear to be done not like by the public at huge. According to one research, the reasons people aren't fond of attorneys are: (1) they're smarter than every person else; (2) they have their very own language; (3) they are frightening; as well as (4) they're costly.
We hope you appreciated our quick retreat from the everyday method of law. Time to return to function.

Minneapolis Public Schools Trivia
In the next month, schools everywhere are back in session. While some students are less than excited, did they know that some students had school for 11 months in 1840s Minneapolis? Celebrate the upcoming school year with some more trivia about Minneapolis Public Schools!
19th Century
The first elementary (and boarding schools) in Minneapolis were created in 1834 near Lake Harriet. These schools educated both Native and white children. Students woke up at 5 A.M. and followed a strict schedule each day:
sleeping: 8.5 hours
eating:  3 hours
working: 4 hours
studying: 6 hours
playing: 2.5 hours
Minneapolis first graders were expected to learn how to spell 150 words.
Seventh graders all learned German.
Students were expected to do calisthenic exercises every hour of the school day.
The first Minneapolis private school was opened in St. Anthony in 1849.
Central Union High was Minneapolis’ first high school. It opened in 1857 and closed in 1863 after a fire.
The first Minneapolis public school system was created in 1860 with $78.65 in its treasury, roughly $2,132.65 in today’s currency.
Some schools ran for 48 weeks a year, the equivalent of 11 months.
20th Century
By 1939, Minneapolis schools ran for 37 weeks a year, the equivalent of 8.5 months.
In 1917, vocational training was commonplace in Minneapolis public schools. Girls learned printing, office work, telegraphy (the science of sending and receiving textual and symbolic messages, like the telegram), needlework, and commercial cooking. Boys were enrolled in shop courses run by the Dunwoody Institute.
In 1923, physical education became mandatory in the state of Minnesota.
Citizenship courses were important in elementary schools. Student councils were common and included 1st-6th graders. In 1952, Pierce Elementary School even allowed its 4th-6th graders to campaign for office before the elections.
Some Minneapolis schools even had “Kindergarten Citizenship Training.” The kindergarteners learned basic skills like sharing, cooperation, and teamwork. But one North Minneapolis school even formed its own “Kindergarten City Council.” Each morning the class “Mayor” and “City Council President” would run meetings. In social studies, the kids would then learn about the real Minneapolis City Council.
Radio workshops were popular in the early 1940s for high school students. Minneapolis had the highest numbers of students in radio courses than any other major U.S. city.
These facts and more are just some of the many that we discovered in the Minneapolis Public Schools Collection. Above photos from the Minneapolis Newspaper Photograph Collection. Click the photos for captions.
Staff in the Minneapolis History Collection are in the process of completing metadata for over 6500 photographs from the Minneapolis Public Schools. These photos will eventually be available online in the Hennepin County Library Digital Collections. Until then, check out many school photos in the Minneapolis Newspaper Photo Collection.

Faith Ringgold's Art Featured Around the Country and Abroad #JACBA Newsletter 21Jul2017
Professor Emerita Faith Ringgold Featured in 'Soul of a Nation'
Tumblr media
Featuring more than 150 works by over 60 artists, many on display in the UK for the first time, Soul of a Nation will be a timely opportunity to see how American cultural identity was re-shaped at a time of social unrest and political struggle.
Soul of a Nation will showcase this debate between figuration and abstraction, from Faith Ringgold's American People Series #20: Die 1967 and Wadsworth Jarrell's Black Prince 1971 to Frank Bowling's Texas Louise 1971 and Sam Gilliam's April 4 1969. A highlight will be Homage to Malcolm 1970 by Jack Whitten, who was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2015, which will be going on public display for the very first time.

'It Remains Relevant - History Repeats Itself' Faith Ringgold discusses the importance of art
AT THE time I made American People Series #20: Die, all hell was breaking loose across parts of the United States.
There were riots as people fought for their civil rights.
Not much of this was being recorded in the press or on the TV news, but I saw the violence myself, and felt I had to say something about it.

Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, review
Tumblr media
Benny Andrews's Did the Bear Sit Under a Tree? is one of a number of punchy message-driven works that set the scene: the Stars and Stripes rolled back to reveal an angry black man waving his fists both at the Flag and the viewer.  If the execution is none too subtle, with the figure rendered in rough-hewn sacking-relief with a zip for a mouth, Andrews wanted to reflect the "raw" aesthetics of his background in rural Georgia.
Faith Ringgold's Die creates a frantic pattern of wild-eyed, bleeding black and white people in which it's impossible to tell who's stabbing or shooting who, all in a compelling pop-expressionist style that isn't revisited in the exhibition or, it seems, the artist's own work.

Soul of a Nation - Art in the Age of Black Power, exhibition review: Pride and prejudice. This ambitious and energetic show charts 20 years of the struggles that formed the modern black artistic identity in America
Tate Modern's Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power is a trip through 20 years of black artists in the US experimenting with what black art could possibly be.
Benny Andrews worked with Bearden in another group, the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition. In Did the Bear Sit Under a Tree? (1969), a black protester shakes his fist at the American flag, which is meant to protect him, but is seen closed-off in its own cold space.

THE PEN TEN WITH CARMEN AGRA DEEDY
Tumblr media
In this week's interview, we speak with Carmen Agra Deedy, author of The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet!, a children's book-illustrated by Eugene Yelchin-about a rooster who insists on singing despite the mayor's no-singing laws. Deedy discusses young readers, surveillance, and the use of humor when confronting difficult realities.
What is the responsibility of the writer of children's books?
To respect the intelligence of young readers and never, ever, lie to them. They will love you for the former and crucify you should you ignore the latter.

Meigs ancestor became renowned author
Tumblr media
The fame of the Rodgers family of Perryville and Havre de Grace extends far and wide with Commodore John Rodgers being the top echelon of that pyramid of fame.
If one were to trace the lineage of Meigs and Rodgers families for a bit, one will arrive at another Meigs of note who, sadly, hasn't reached the level of fame and recognition as her male ancestors with their impressive military careers. This ancestor was Cornelia Meigs, an author of fiction and biography, a teacher and historian of note and a critic of children's literature. Truly she was an astounding woman who contributed greatly to children's literature as a whole.
She would leave Bryn Mawr to teach writing at the New School of Social Research in New York and was the lead editor and a writer of "A Critical History of Children's Literature," published in 1953. The book was called landmark in the field of children's literature studies. It was later revised under Meigs' critical eye and reissued in 1969.
She would write over 30 fiction books for children, two plays, two biographies and several books and articles for adults.

Books raise awareness, sensitivity to suffering
Today's reviewed books help create a more sensitive awareness of this global problem that promotes empathy, and that's a very good thing because if we were among the 65.6 million displaced people in the world, we'd surely want others to be empathetic toward our plight and offer us help.

"A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park
Alternating narratives of two young people living in Sudan, this book is based on the true story of the life of Salva Dut, who, at age 11, was separated from his family and village during yet again another battle in the Second Sudanese Civil War. Against all odds, Salva's journey of many years, walking from one refugee camp to another, across Africa to Ethopia, to Kenya and back to Sudan, demonstrates enormous courage, hope and the will to survive.
The second voice in "A Long Walk to Water" is young Nya, who walks for eight hours every day simply to fetch water. How and why their lives intersect is both profound and moving.
An important work in many regards, "A Long Walk to Water" not only raises an awareness of the suffering of others, but in so doing, helps readers develop compassion, empathy and a deeper appreciation of those things many of us take for granted.
