hi hi!! thank you so much ;--; <3 i hope you enjoy! this is my first time writing for twisted wonderland, so i hope it’s alright!! i’m not suuuper familiar with the characters yet T_T

RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS:

— to put it bluntly, riddle is both excited and nervous as hell. as we have seen with the whole tart incident, he's not the best when it comes to baking. what he really wants, however, is to impress you and earn your approval, even if he'd never admit it!

— he'll most definitely ask trey for some tips and pointers- he needs to learn from the best. he wants- no, needs this to be absolutely perfect.

— of course, riddle would want to make strawberry desserts! tarts, cheesecake, pie, whatever you’d like! riddle’s got quite the sweet tooth, so he wouldn’t mind anything you’d like to whip up.

— the kitchen would be turned into a no-nonsense atmosphere; the ingredients are flawlessly measured and weighed, the oven is preheated to the perfect temperature, and no messes would be left so long as he’s there. he’s got everything under control, don’t you worry about a thing!

— if anything, any little thing goes wrong, he’ll easily be brought to tears. please give him reassuring kisses to bring him back to himself.

— no matter how the process goes, riddle wants this to be a nice experience! he’ll do whatever it takes to see you smile, even if it means setting his pride aside to let you feed him some of whatever you made together.

LEONA KINGSCHOLAR:

— leona couldn’t really care less about baking, but he has a weakness for your upturned eyes pleading for him to come with you. he really can’t say no to you- you really are something else.

— he’d basically make whatever you wanted so long as it’s easy, like a batch of cookies- he’s not much for sweets, so it wouldn’t matter to him. as long as he can eat it with you, it’s all fine!

— he would most definitely instigate a flour fight, the little asshole. he’ll toss a little handful at you while you’re not looking, smiling innocently when you turn back around like nothing happened.

— at some point, leona will get lazy as per usual and groan about how long it’s taking, the drape himself over you, nuzzling into your body.

— when everything’s all done, he’ll demand that you reward his efforts by letting him lay on your lap, along with making you feed him whatever you had baked.

— leona would have more fun than he thought! maybe baking’s not so bad after all, especially if he has his favourite little herbivore to tease and taunt while he’s doing it.

AZUL ASHENGROTTO:

— baking sweets? with you? sign azul up immediately. though he’ll act all cool and collected on the outside, like he always does, he’ll be super excited internally.

— azul would want to bake a cake with you! it’s a simple yet delicious desserts, and reminds azul of his mother’s homemade ones that he loved so much.

— he feels at peace doing anything with you, and something like baking is bound to get him to relax and unveil his façade for a least a little while. you can see a genuine smile on his lips as you hold up a batter-covered spoon for him to taste.

— the cake decorating doesn’t go too well, considering it’s likely neither of you are professional bakers, but you and him are proud of it all the same! you made it together, and that’s what counts.

— azul won’t let anyone else try a piece of the cake, not even jade or floyd. it’s a precious memory he made with his beloved, and he wants to keep it between the two of you.

— he’ll slowly work up the courage to ask you to sit on his lap so he can feed some to you! please, don’t laugh at the obvious blush on his cheeks.

KALIM AL-ASIM:

— of all the dorm leaders, kalim would be most excited about baking with you! he’s always down to spend some quality time with his favourite person, and baking sounds like so much fun.

— i can see kalim wanting to making something cute and sweet, just like him! perhaps some delicious, brightly-frosted cupcakes are in order?

— he’s kind of a disaster. though not on purpose, he’ll absolutely make a huge mess. egg shells are all over the counter, there’s batter on the floor, and some sort of ominous stain is now on the fridge.

— no matter how messy it gets, it’s impossible to stay mad at kalim. he’s just so... bright! how could you be angry when he puts frosting on your nose and tells you that you’re the cutest cupcake in the bunch?

— the cupcakes end up looking, well, questionable to say the least, but they’ve got their own unique charm to them! kalim’s surprisingly good at making sweets, and they taste pretty good.

— it all ends with jamil scolding you to to hell and back for creating such a huge disaster in the kitchen, but kalim thinks all the scolding in the world is worth it if he can spend time with you!

VIL SCHOENHEIT:

— oh, how interesting! vil would love to bake some yummy sweets with you, so long as they aren’t too packed with sugar and whatnot.

— something like a fruit crumble would be right up his alley- naturally sweetened with the delicious flavours of blueberries, strawberries, apples, or any fruit you’d like!

— he’d be very careful to wear a cute apron and some gloves, fussing over you when you insist you’re fine without them. he’ll huff, tying your hair back for you and rewarding you for staying still with a kiss on the forehead.

— as expected from vil, everything goes smoothly! baking is yet another thing he’s great at, and he’s having a lovely time with you as always.

— he’d definitely love the decorating part- making things look pretty is his specialty after all.

— he’ll want to take you to sit outside and enjoy the sun while you eat your treat! there’s nothing like sharing a delicious dessert with your beloved.

IDIA SHROUD:

— sweets? you’ve got idia’s attention. he’s got a huge sweet tooth, and making something with you, the sweetest thing in his life, would be a huge bonus.

— idia’s not hard to please when it comes to desserts, anything would work for him! he’d love to try any kinds of cookies or cakes you’d make.

— you’d have to do a lot of coaxing and bribing to get him to actually come out to the kitchen. however, if you showed up in a cute little maid outfit, let’s just say that would be easier than you thought.

— he’ll be pretty good at baking! he’s played some cooking mama and other games in his time, so idia will have picked up some skills from those.

— he manages to relax a little bit with you and you notice he’s much less tense and anxious than normal.

— honestly, the baking part was fun, but what idia really enjoyed the most was the kiss on the cheek he got as a reward.

MALLEUS DRACONIA:

— malleus would be interested immediately! he’s not used to cooking for himself, so he wants to try it out, even if sebek protests that he should never do such a thing.

— as malleus isn’t a big fan of cakes, perhaps something like mochi would be good for him! fairly simple to make, and super delicious.

— …however, you begin to realize that he’s more inept at this than he looks. the faces he makes while reading the recipe are absolutely precious! poor malleus, he wants to help you so badly.

— he’ll be marveled at any baking skills you may have. the way you mix the ingredients together and create the mochi just amazes him completely!

— malleus will most likely end up just watching you for most part, with his arms wrapped around you from behind and his head resting on top of yours. he’s so fascinated by every little move you make.

— his eyes would light up when he tried the dessert- you’re absolutely amazing! he’ll manage to fall in love with you even more, you’re so special to him and sweeter than any dessert.

Yamato & Momo Shuffle Talk Part 3: A Food Tour

Yamato Nikaido: Here we are at the market.

Momo: Wow! They've got everything here! It's so colorful!

Momo: Oranges, apples, watermelons, and so much more.

Momo: It's a treasure trove of food~!

Yamato Nikaido: We need to stay professional, remember!?

Momo: Ahaha! Sorry about that. I got all caught up in this bustling atmosphere!

Momo: Being in a new place like this is so exciting, I couldn't control myself!

Yamato Nikaido: Personally, being in a huge crowd in this heat is just making me dizzy.

Momo: Oh come on, Yamato! Live a little!

Momo: Ah! Look, they sell baguettes over there. It smells delicious..! Wanna buy one and split it with me!?

Yamato Nikaido: Ah, it really does smell pretty good... No, really good.

Momo: Oh ho! Are you finally getting a bit of pep in your step!?

Yamato Nikaido: As much pep as I can, sure. Should we do our questions while we browse the stalls, too?

Momo: Oh yeah, I almost forgot!

Momo: Do you mind going first?

Yamato Nikaido: Me? Uh, sure, I guess.

Yamato Nikaido: You're always really nice to everyone, even though there's bound to be at least a couple people you don't like all that much.

Yamato Nikaido: Do you have any tips for getting along with people you don't like?

Momo: Thanks for the compliment! We're off to a great start already!

Yamato Nikaido: I'm not the only person who thinks you're nice, though.

Momo: As happy as I am to hear that, you don't exactly seem to have trouble with people yourself.

Yamato Nikaido: I've always been good at petty small talk, if that's what you mean. Keeping things as broad and shallow as possible.

Momo: I totally do that sometimes, too! ...But please keep this off the record!

Momo: Anyway, back to your question. You wanted tips to help you better get along with people?

Yamato Nikaido: If you have any, then yes please.

Momo: Hmm... Nothing comes to mind!

Yamato Nikaido: Nothing? Seriously?

Momo: Nope, nothing!

Momo: Instead of forcing yourself to do anything, I think it's important to find something you already like about the other person.

Momo: Once you find that thing about them that makes you happy, you'll naturally be more drawn to them. As long as they're not a really scary person, anyway.

Momo: And they'll start liking you back!

Yamato Nikaido: I have to admit, there's definitely something... disarming about you.

Yamato Nikaido: I feel like my heart is behind ten locks, but with you I forget to lock at least eight of them.

Momo: Your heart's usually behind ten locks!? Your defenses must be impenetrable..!

Yamato Nikaido: I dunno about that. I think some of my locks are gone now, actually.

Momo: Just as I thought!

Yamato Nikaido: Haha. I find it hard to relax around you, truth be told. Sometimes it feels like you're teasing me.

Momo: Hehehe!

Momo: Alright, now it's time for my question!

Momo: Ahem.

Momo: What kind of snacks do I have to buy so you'll come over to my place for a drink sometime?

Yamato Nikaido: You're asking me to hang out with you?

Momo: You can tell?

Yamato Nikaido: Sure, I'll come over. And I like Japanese foods, just so you know.

Momo: Hmm, interesting...

Yamato Nikaido: I've been really into roasted stingray recently. Whenever Tsunashi-san and I go drinking, we tend to order some.

Momo: Wow, your tastes must be super refined!

Yamato Nikaido: Tsunashi-san took me to this place that serves really tasty stingray, and that's how I got into it.

Momo: I see! I never knew a spot like that existed. You guys gotta take me with you sometime!

Yamato Nikaido: Of course. It's real good stuff, wouldn't want you to miss out on it.

Momo: When we get back to Japan, we're gonna stop by there, and also a fish market!

Momo: I'll find something that'll make you sting ray connoisseurs' mouths water, and then you and Ryu can come over to my place.

Yamato Nikaido: I wouldn't call us connoisseurs! But I am curious about what first-rate stingray tastes like... So I'm definitely going to take you up on that offer.

Momo: It's gonna be so much fun!

Yamato Nikaido: We should probably buy that baguette you were talking about first, though.

Momo: Yep! Let's buy lots of fruit, too!

Yamato Nikaido: I was actually eyeing that stall over there earlier.

Yamato Nikaido: Instead of fresh produce, they sell dried fruits, nuts, that kind of stuff. They seem like they'd make for tasty snacks.

Momo: Ahaha, more snacks!? I know you like to drink, but now's not the time, Yamato!

Yamato Nikaido: My eyes were instantly drawn to that stall when we started talking about drinking. Couldn't help it.

Momo: Dried fruits do seem like a good treat to go with some wine.

Momo: In any case, let's look around some more!

Yamato Nikaido: Okay.

Momo: We bought a ton of stuff..!

Yamato Nikaido: Yeah, no way are we gonna eat all of this without outside help.

Momo: If we give it our all, we just might..!

Yamato Nikaido: I don't recall coming here to have an eating competition.

Momo: I even got a souvenir for Yuki. Check out these dried tomatoes! They're cut up into these cute little slices.

Momo: I bet I could make earrings out of these!

Yamato Nikaido: That'd certainly be... unique?

Momo: Do you think Yuki would like that!?

Yamato Nikaido: I'm pretty sure he'll like just about anything, as long as it's from you.

Momo: Yeah, I guess you're right! Ugh, I wanna give these to him so bad! I can't wait to see how happy he'll be!

Yamato Nikaido: I bought a bunch of stuff, too. Guess even I ended up getting caught up in this lively atmosphere.

Momo: That's not a bad thing, y'know! Doing something and regretting it is better than not doing something and regretting it!

Yamato Nikaido: You're such an optimist!

Momo: Besides, don't you think we'd look nice if we posed for pictures with all these groceries?

Yamato Nikaido: I suppose we would. I'll make our market visit look more authentic.

Momo: Let's have our picture taken, then!

Yamato Nikaido: Sure!

[Snap]

Momo: We look so rustic! Even if we're technically not in the countryside!

Yamato Nikaido: The picture turned out pretty nice.

Momo: Good thing we bought so much stuff, huh!?

Momo: ...Wait, what are those tiny green fruits you've got there, Yamato?

Yamato Nikaido: Kiwi berries. They're supposed to be somewhat of a local specialty.

Yamato Nikaido: I got them for free when I bought all my other fruits. The seller said I had to try them, since they're so good.

Momo: Wow! That was really nice of them!

Momo: They look like grapes... I wonder if they taste the same, too.

Yamato Nikaido: Wanna try some? You don't even have to peel these things.

Momo: Yeah!

Momo: They're so sweet..!

Yamato Nikaido: Yeah. Not bad at all.

Momo: I was expecting them to be way more sour, since they're called kiwi berries.

Momo: I feel like I could eat these all day.

Momo: I can't stop having more~!

Yamato Nikaido: Hmm?

Yamato Nikaido: That man over there is selling oranges, and waving to us.

Momo: What does he want? Are we supposed to try his wares?

Yamato Nikaido: Maybe.

Yamato Nikaido: Why don't we try some oranges, too?

Momo: Absolutely!

Momo: We're gonna empty out this whole market!

Yamato Nikaido: It's like we're actually gonna have an eating competition!

why are you being like this?

people i’ve met...they’re not like you. they don’t care. i don’t matter.

don’t ever think that. we all matter.

i have to talk about merlin in ‘the hollow queen,’ which is an episode i really do appreciate, despite the fact that it’s part of the enchanted!gwen arc, which isn’t my favorite.

the usual disclaimer applies: i am doing this rewatch because i never finished season 5. i don’t know how this show ends. if you are reading this and want to engage with me, please be gentle and avoid spoilers for the last four episodes of this season - i appreciate you all very much for protecting my very late discovery of this show! <3

and now, to the point, which is this:

merlin looks happier walking around with this “druid” kid in the woods than he ever does in camelot at any other time this season.

and granted, maybe “happy” isn’t quite the right word to use, because "happy” for merlin now doesn’t even come close to what it was even just two seasons ago - but there is this quiet enjoyment to what he’s doing. there’s a contentment. he smiles a lot in these scenes, when we can practically count on one hand the number of times he’s smiled in episodes 1 through 7. he’s smiling when he shows up in the woods and tosses daegal a packet of breakfast, when daegal insists that his arm doesn’t need treating, when they’re sitting on the log talking about gaius, when merlin tosses him the extra apples - even when merlin is showing him how to bandage his leg, after merlin has already been betrayed to morgana and subsequently rescued.

i think there’s something to be said about this, in terms of where merlin is in season 5 vs where he actually wishes he was. in terms of what he’s doing, and what he actually enjoys doing. in terms of what he has to be, and what he could be, if he were only given the space.

this episode really makes me think, but i’m not sure i’m going to be able to articulate my thoughts in a way that makes sense. it’s just - the thing that this episode makes so clear is that - merlin is so obviously gifted at other things than his mandate to ‘make sure arthur doesn’t die,’ and he so obviously has other things that he cares about, things that his “mission” has made it impossible for him to pay enough attention to. for example - he’s forced to spend all his time and energy protecting a regime that hates him, and there are a lot of downsides to that, but one of them is that he hardly ever gets to connect with his own people. and merlin so obviously cares about them, like - every time he comes across someone who is the slightest bit like him - freya, little mordred, gilli, this new kid daegal - he feels an automatic sense of responsibility for their safety, an automatic kinship with them. he wants to help them. he belongs with them. but it has always been difficult for him to help them the way he wants to, just by virtue of his situation. and in season 5, it’s doubly hard, because he just doesn’t feel like it’s within his mandate anymore.

merlin in season 5 has no room in his life for anything besides ‘make sure arthur doesn’t die.’ and even before season 5, his life had been slowly constricting around him, until it couldn’t accommodate anything other than his “destiny.” but merlin’s commitment to that destiny has stolen so much away from him, so many opportunities - and it’s easy to forget that his life could be more. that he has more to offer than just ‘make sure arthur doesn’t die.’ merlin forgets it himself - after all, he initially resists going to help daegal’s sister because he just doesn’t feel like he can. he doesn’t feel like he can fit this into his life, however much he wants to. he can’t leave arthur alone.

but once he’s out in the woods, he’s so much more...at ease. he’s happy to sit and patch up this kid’s wounds and talk to him about living in camelot with gaius. he’s happy to give this kid all of the apples he has in his bag. he gets a kind of quiet fulfillment from walking this kid through bandaging a leg wound and telling him he’s done it well. he laughs when this hapless young person walking next to him is snapping his fingers at bugs like, “if i catch this fly, i’m going to eat it.”

this episode makes it so clear that merlin has gifts outside of ‘making sure arthur doesn’t die.’ he’s become a studied healer, for all that he keeps claiming “i’m not a physician.” he’s a born teacher - an absolute natural. he has an obvious gift for connecting with people, and he even more obviously loves doing this kind of work - it’s something that comes easily to him. it makes him happy. it fulfills him. this - traveling to help someone who is ill, encouraging a self-hating young kid to discover the good he can do in this world, teaching someone to do something as simple as bandaging a wound - this is work he can feel good about.

i don’t think merlin always feels good about what he’s doing in camelot.

he feels that what he’s doing in camelot is important, yes. he feels that what he’s doing in camelot is necessary. he also feels that what he’s doing in camelot is going to end up killing him, one day, and that if his visions are true and things keep proceeding the way they’re going this season, then all his pain and sacrifice might ultimately come to nothing.

merlin loves camelot. he wants arthur to live. he wants all his friends to thrive. but he also wants to be helping people - his people, in particular, and that is the one specific thing his mission in camelot prevents him from doing. he’s supposed to be doing it by helping arthur, or so people keep telling him, but it doesn’t feel like that, sometimes. how many years has it been, for so little to have changed?

i don’t think that feels good for him. it’s the same inherent contradiction he’s faced since he first arrived in camelot and stumbled into uther’s service. the cognitive dissonance is the same. he has an externally imposed responsibility to arthur, and an intrinsic desire to help his own people, and he doesn’t feel like he can fulfill both of these demands at the same time.

it’s easy to forget, because of the omnipresence of the legend, and because of the entire premise of the show, that merlin is more than his duty to protect arthur. that merlin was somebody before he met arthur, somebody who already had thoughts and ideas and imaginings about where he might go in this world, about what his life might be, about what mattered to him. it’s so easy to forget that he was a whole person long before he came to camelot, that he continues to be a whole person, whether arthur is present or not.

it’s...a hard feeling for me to put into words, but i think the closest i can get to explaining it in this particular episode is with the smallest thing, which is when merlin gives daegal both of the apples, and daegal says “don’t you like them?” and merlin replies, “they’re my favorite.”

it’s such a simple little thing, that, but it just - opens up a door to something you’ve never had reason to think about before. apples are merlin’s favorite fruit.

and it hits you then, what you normally aren’t expected to remember, that merlin is a whole person, one who exists outside the context of his mission, who existed long before he ever came to camelot, who continues to exist in all his glorious fullness even as “destiny” tries to hammer his existence into this one single shatterpoint. every tiny thing that makes up a person - all the beautiful, innumerable things that make each and every one of us so impossibly singular and irreplaceable, unique among billions - all of this was in place, long before merlin ever came to camelot. he has always been somebody, a whole somebody, somebody whose favorite fruit is apples.

merlin is more than his duty to arthur pendragon. he has always been more than that. he existed before he met arthur, and he continues to exist now, on his own merits, as richly whole and perfectly individual as any of his compatriots in camelot. he loves books. he hates hunting. he can’t hold his liquor. he gets hiccups when he eats too fast. he has a favorite pudding gaius makes for him. he has a grudge against the royal cook. he can’t keep his own room clean. he has always had hopes, dreams, wonderings, plans, things he’s curious about, things he’s afraid of, things more mundane than ‘i might fail at fulfilling my destiny’ - things like ghosts, or leeches, or giant naked rats that eat you alive. he has always had likes, dislikes, pet peeves, favorite sounds, least-favorite tastes, places he likes to go in the hour before supper when he’s supposed to be doing chores. he has a favorite memory of ealdor. he has a side he prefers to sleep on. he has a leather bracelet he’s worn on the same wrist for years. these things were true before he came to camelot, and they are still true now, even when the universe doesn’t want him to remember it.

he deserves a life of his own. he deserves better than a life that only exists for someone else’s sake. we can see, in this episode especially, how good he is at other things - at teaching, at healing, at connecting with people and helping them feel better about themselves and find their place in the world. we can see how...therapeutic, it is for him, to be doing work he can believe in. how much more relaxed he feels, in those brief scenes in the woods, when he is allowed to be out doing what he wants to do, when he is allowed to be in community with his kinfolk, when he isn’t hiding. when he is allowed to help people - his people - as opposed to drowning himself in the unending, merciless sea of suffering and fear that camelot has become for him.

it isn’t right, that he can’t have a life that makes him happy, a life that honors all of his existence, not just the bits of him that work to make sure arthur doesn’t die. merlin deserves a life where he can be more than just a ready sacrifice on the altar of albion’s future.

he deserves a life where somebody knows that apples are his favorite fruit.

A little thought experiment, if you will...

Say I wanted to rewrite the story of Snow White, with a more modern setting. Say instead of royalty, Snow's parents owned an apple orchard, passed down through her mother's family for generations, and each tree was planted by each new child born to the family. And say instead of dying in childbirth, Snow's mother lived until her daughter was about 4-5, long enough to help her plant her own apple tree in the orchard.

Now, say that after her mother died, Snow White inherited her mother's recipe book. Each page has a new apple-based treat on it: apple pie, apple cider, apple tarts, candy apples, apple juice, baked apples, etc. And over the years, as Snow White grows older, she keeps trying out the recipes and learning to make them the same way her mother did.

Now enter the wicked step-mother. Let's say she hates apples, because maybe they remind her of her new husband's beautiful late wife, and that they also are adored by her new, even more beautiful step-daughter. And maybe she cares a little less about being the "fairest", so long as she's always right — because let's face it, those people are some of the worst anyway. So she spends her time trying to get her new family to focus on anything else — hell, maybe she prefers blueberries, for all I care. I'm making this up as I go — and thus begins letting the orchard die off. Maybe she even helps push it along a bit, poisoning some of the tress one by one until eventually only two trees are left fruiting — Snow White's and her mother's.

Maybe by now, Snow is about 16, and has been bringing apple treats to school whenever she gets a new recipe right. Maybe she's attracted the eye of one of the wealthier boys in town, who maybe liked to buy treats from Snow's mother back in the day, and is now falling not just for Snow's beauty, but also her delicious cooking as well (the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, after all).

But maybe Snow is also beginning to see what her step-mother is trying to do. The reader could piece together how the story would end from the little pieces threaded throughout. They could anticipate how it would end, and with the original ending, they could feel satisfied in knowing they found all the little clues I left for them and figured it out along the way.

The second ending, however, feels more like a fanfiction ending — taking something happy and making it tragic and hurtful, just to see how it might've worked. Were there some clues that might've led to that conclusion? Sure, of course, but they're maybe a lot more difficult to find or piece together.

Not to mention, it takes the characterizations I gave them in the beginning and turns them on their head, completely removing any growth or change they've undergone as the story had continued. The characters have lost any agency of their own, instead being pulled into whatever direction I've decided for them, even when it goes against everything they represented from the start.

Now, to be fair, I am not even REMOTELY caught up on Game of Thrones, BUT! I know when a show's writers are more concerned with trying to make something "new" and "creative" and "unpredictable" than they are with telling a good story. Which is almost impossible, at this point, as we as a species have pretty much exhausted all possible endings and storylines that could exist. What matters is what we do with what already exists to make it our own, unique story. Is it the same as countless stories that came before it? Sure, of course, but it's still a good story, and that's what really matters.

For Snow White, it's easy. The morals shown throughout the original tale — the dangers of vanity, don't trust strangers, and true beauty comes from within — are still vaguely present in my retelling; instead of vanity, the danger comes from the step-mother's jealousy and desire to always be seen as right, whether she truly is or not. She only begins to see her own faults and errors when she finally fails, forcing her to reevaluate her actions as she is arrested in the end. And while there are no strangers really present to wary of, the apples given to Snow White are not necessarily questioned when perhaps they should have been, because the danger lies in not knowing where they truly came from and what they went through to get to her. And the third one, true beauty comes from within, is present throughout Snow's character arc. She inherited her kind-hearted nature from her mother, and learned more as she grew up. She treats her step-mother as much like family as her father, up until the point where she feels her own safety is at risk, and then instead of retaliating, she leaves. She stays with a friend, and shares her cooking with them and their family while she is there. Her mother's kindness as well as her own, in the end, are what makes her friends so distraught when they think she's gone, and eventually wind up saving her.

But GoT takes those characterizations, those signs of growth in Jaime and Danaerys, and even Cersi and Arya and Brienne — and I don't know who else — and just fucking destroys them. It's a terrible message to send out, regardless of what age the consumers are — because morals and deeper meanings are an integral part of all fiction, not just children's stories and fairy tales.

The other day I received what I assumed was my November NMNL box- but as it turns out, it was a REPEAT of my October box! I was so confused because I knew I already had this box, and as far as I know I wasn’t supposed to get a repeat. I contacted them, and according to what they found, the box I should have gotten was actually the November YumeTwins. Now, they are going to let me keep this box, as well as re-send the box I was supposed to get. So... I was thinking, instead of keeping it, I might do a giveaway :D

This month we wanted to bring you a box that conveys the feeling of summer in Japan and have brought together a number of fresh fruity flavors, and some salty savory treats as well! We hope you enjoy this month’s Slice of Summer TokyoTreat box!“ This month prize items include a few figurines and quality ramune candies, while the Lucky Treat is full on My Hero Academia and a couple other anime series. As you may notice in the picture, I got a brand new candy kit :3 so I’ll be covering this in a separate post.

Pepsi Refresh Shot

When you’re in need of a quick pick-me-up, this cute little Pepsi is just the drink you need! It features double the caffeine and a sweeter taste to give you the energy you need and a refreshed mind. ....I beg to differ though. It smells like an average Pepsi, but when I tried it out, it tasted like a stale or flat Pepsi <_< It wasn’t opened, nor did it expire until April, but I didn’t like it. I only had a small amount of it so I can’t say it did anything, and even when I had someone else try it they said the same thing. I didn’t finish it, but I did hang onto the can because I thought it was cute.

Mandarin Orange Gummies & Fruit Gummies

Our first item is an adorable cup of mandarin orange gummies. These are by the brand Kabaya and the entire cup is 158 calories. These gummies are made with fresh orange juice, and have the look and taste of a real mandarin orange! I have mixed opinions on these. I like mandarin oranges and they taste like them with a slight sweetness. The only problem is, due to the “injury“ my cup took, the lid was slightly peeled open and that caused the gummies to become hard (unless they were like that originally?). The gummies are still edible, but they’ve become tough and chewy and gummies like that are too much for my mouth to handle, I prefer the softer, smooth ones. But I find them pleasant enough to suck on until they soften. ------ I had bigger hopes for this next item, which I’ve seen a lot but never personally had before. They felt much softer in the bag, and for 81.7 calories I figured they’d be a good alternative. The fruits are chewy, but softer than the others. I know this will sound bizarre, but they reminded me of lemon hand or dish soap with juice from the fruit its supposed to be. I really liked the green apple/lime and strawberry ones, but the Pineapple was also really good. The only one that disappointed me was the grape one, because it had a weird taste.

Ramune Caramel Corn & Crab Biscuit 4-Pack

Not everything we got in this box was super-bright and colorful; for example, we have these two crispy-crunchy snacks! Our first one is ramune-flavored Caramel Corn by Tohato. Caramel Corn is a caramel sweetened corn puff snack that can be found in several unique flavors; like ice creams, drinks, desserts, etc. You can even find normal/original caramel corn with nut pieces or clusters inside, usually peanuts. The only downside about these is that the calories are very high; this entire bag is 415 calories! It’s also a very sweet snack, so they can begin to taste cloying after a while. If you never tried caramel corn I would still recommend it though because it’s really yummy and would make a great “sharing snack”. This ramune flavor is perfect for summer because it brings to mind a refreshing ramune drink you might get after a long day walking through summer heat, or maybe for the commute home. ------ To balance the overly flavored snacks and sweets, this month we also get a 4-pack set of cute sea animal themed biscuits. The biscuits are also on the thicker side, so you get a really nice crunch when eating them. Each bag is 73 calories, and you get a nice handful so I think they would be a nice little snack. The booklet mentions they have a slightly sweetened taste- but I couldn’t notice anything of the sort. They just taste like really thick animal crackers to me. I’m not a huge fan of plain biscuits, but I don’t hate them either. Like I said, they counter-balance all the sweetness we did get in the box, so in a way they’re kind of nice.

Salt and Lemon Kit Kats

Yep, you read that right- SALT and lemon kit kats :D It might sound a little strange, but I guess it depends on the person because I’ve seen salt and lemon mixed before, but when I showed these to my dad he found it to be really strange. And yes, they are kinda warped because heat likes to melt kit kats. Each mini-pack ss 63 calories. These unique kit kats feature a delicious white chocolate coating on the outside with a yummy lemon flavoring that brings to mind the meringue of a lemon pie, or lemon cereal pieces. The wafer contains the saltiness, and together, you get a creamy lemon with a slight sourness and salty after-taste; it feels like you get a simple, yet still complex flavor profile while eating these. I really like them!

Lemon Umaibo

To go with our lemon theme (or perhaps citrus would be more accurate?), we also have a LEMON umaibo! Usually Umaibo have a savory taste, so it’s always weird trying the sweet ones. I’ve only tried chocolate, apple pie (which didn’t taste too sweet if I recall), and sugar rusk, so lemon is a new experience. Each stick is 43 calories. As you can see, it looks like a plain umaibo. There wasn’t really any physical sign of a coating or flavoring on it. It’s very crunchy, and it actually tastes a bit like the kit kat, but not as salty or sour. It didn’t have a sour taste at all, it kind of reminded me of a salty lemon meringue pie. Which might sound weird, but when you actually try it, it’s not terrible.

Fruit Ramune Powder Candy & Strawberry Soft Serve

These next items brought some nostalgia to me. Our first one, the strawberry-shaped container is full of strawberry ramune (powder pressed) candies. It was available in strawberry, grape, or green/muscat grape! I love strawberry, but I also really like grape and muscat so I would have been happen with any of them honestly. Now the reason I found these nostalgic is because when I was little we had candy like this at all the stores that sold candy. They had powdered tablets like these, as well as little pellets, and just straight up edible powder. My mom’s grandma even collected the containers and had a display of them; I remember spotting them the few times I saw her as a child and just loving how colorful they looked~ These ramune candies are very soft, so when you put them in your mouth/liquid they turn into a dis-solvable mushy texture before disappearing. They’re light on the tongue and pretty sweet, but you don’t get a strong fruity flavor from them. ----- Meanwhile, the other item is also very familiar to one I would get as a child a lot; they were little wafer ice cream cones with marshmallow “ice cream“ on top. They still make them but as an adult I never really get them, even though my marshmallow obsession has grown since I was a kid. What makes this one special is that no only is it a regular sized cone, but the marshmallow is strawberry and sugary, and features a tangy jelly on the inside. Each one is 65 calories. So, while I was eating this I noticed something funny. There was something inside the cone moving. I bit into it and a bunch of white pressed sweet powder came out. It was very delicious, and it did make the rest of the stuff taste better (considering I only took a few bites of it, then let it sit for a few days).

Grape Ramune Candies & Pokemon Gum

One of the things I enjoyed about this box was how a lot of the snacks went together in some shape or form. If i wasn’t the flavor it was the textures, or in the above case nostalgia behind it. The next item is one I had before- but never in this flavor. I’ve had it in soda, strawberry, mixed fruit, and now this grape, which is one I never saw prior to getting it here. I really like these ramune candies, because they taste good, come in an adorable ramune-shaped bottle, and some even have cute little droplet characters on them. The lid is also really fun to pop! The entire bottle is 100 calories, and there is grape and muscat flavors, as noted by the 2 alternate colors. I like how these taste, but I will admit that the grape flavor tastes a little like grape medicine. The muscat one is really good, and has a bit of sour fizziness to it. ------ To go with those crunchy ramune candies, we also got some ultra-soft grape gum! Each stick is 22 calories. So far I’ve come to really like Japanese gum, it’s very smooth. This gum is sweet, but the grape flavor is really light. Like if I didn’t know what it was, I’m not sure I would have known what it was <_< but the flavor lasted for a while, so I’ll give it that.

Wasabi Chips & Texas Corn Salty

As the odd pair out I decided to save these last items. As you can tell they’re not fruit at all :D as much as I like sweets and fruity candies, I’ve come to find I love savory snacks (unless its fruity or chocolate pastry) way more, so I was very happy to see these and by this point I really wanted more salt/less-sugar. By Lucky Cone, we have a cute little bag of salty texas corn for 70 calories. They were definitely a good item to eat after trying everything else- but I was disappointed because they don’t taste like corn at all. I love Japanese corn snacks, while these just taste like salty puffed corn cereal. I didn’t hate them though. ----- Our final item is a bag of wasabi chips! Now these, I feel like I’ve tried before, but I have tried a couple up to this point so I can’t exactly confirm if these were one of them. Each bag is 359 calories, which is kind of a lot >3< but it’s not terrible if you ate the bag over the course of a few days/week, or shared it. As a person who only likes incredibly small amounts of wasabi (the overly strong mustard taste is a big turn-off for me), I always get a little uneasy about wasabi flavors since until you try them, you never know how much wasabi will be in there. You can’t smell the wasabi on the chips, but you can taste it. They’re not spicy at all (unless you eat several), but they do taste like wasabi. I really like these :3 I think they’re worth recommending if you’ve wanted to try wasabi but might have been too afraid of the real thing, or if you wanted to try to build up your wasabi-tolerance level, this might be a way to go.

Content - 4.5 out of 5. After making so many complaints about repetition these prior boxes I was very glad to see that this wasn’t like them. As much as I prefer savory-sweet balance in boxes rather than one over the other, I did like the items, and I especially like getting cute containers. However, I feel like that even though we got several small items, I’m not sure it equals what we pay. I’m always iffy about that because I kind of have to “guesstimate“ prices. Quality - 5 out of 5. Everything was fine, with one item being barely damaged. But it was still edible and I’m not sure if it was my fault or maybe it happened during shipping. I almost opened everything about a week ago and snacking on it now as I write this, it all still tastes perfectly like it did upon opening. But other than 2 items, these aren’t re-sealable and will need some containers to keep fresh. Theme - 2 out of 5. I thought they kind of failed this time around. The theme was perfect for summer, but when I think of the beach I think of flavors like pineapple, mango, coconut (I hate coconut so I am thankful none of that was included), other fruits, and maybe grilled flavors. The mint, soda, and melon flavors were great for the theme to provide a refreshing and light taste, but I wish they had played that up some more. Total Rank: 6 or 7 out of 10. Lately the boxes are improving I think, I keep liking them more and more and I really loved this one (with the exception of the poteco rings and the DIY, they’re good but I’m just tired of seeing them!). The flavors are all very yummy, but the items correspondence with the theme needs some work. Let’s see if they do better next month with our last of the 3 summer boxes this year :3

Goats and sheep are cute, especially the kids and lambs, and we watch them play and enjoy their beauty. But they are not pets. We have very little hands-on daily interaction with them. The goats get their hooves trimmed regularly and, in the spring, we comb out the cashmere. Otherwise, the goats and sheep pretty much take care of themselves.

As far as the cattle, we have the milk cows in one herd. Then there is another herd comprised of steers that resulted from the annual birthing of calves. We grow them out for beef. The bull hangs out there as well until we need him. The steers pretty much take care of themselves as well. We often watch them grazing peacefully but are not physically interacting with them so much.

The Milk Cows

The milk cows are unique. We interact with the milk cows – just about on a daily basis. These cows are not pets, but there is a special relationship or bond that develops with them. We pet them and hug them and talk to them. Cows are very peaceful animals. It is a pleasure to simply watch them graze. One of the reasons I wanted a milk cow was the experience of peace while sitting beside this beautiful creature and performing the action of milking.

We bond with all of our animals. However, the bond with the milk cows is deeper. The difference is that the other animals are raised specifically for meat as food. The milk cows are raised for the luscious milk they make. They get extra-special attention.

Today, for the first time in my experience on the farm, we had to cull one of our milk cows. She was gentle and calm as they all are. She had intelligent eyes and a beautiful coat. I’ll talk more about the Normande coloring in a bit. We put a halter on her and led her onto the trailer. She was only slightly adverse and it didn’t take long to get her on the trailer. When we arrived at the processing facility, she was lying on the floor of the trailer not seemingly traumatized at all. Once the door was opened, she got up and Scott led her off the trailer. She got a little antsy at that point when we wanted her to go to an unknown place, but she shortly cooperated.

Upon beginning the return journey home, we were both quiet and introspective. It was hard. I think it is the hardest thing I have ever done so far. I’ve seen the aftermath of a coyote attack on our lambs. I found dead lambs and goat kids that perished for reasons unknown. Last year we lost our oldest breeding ewe and her lambs, likely triplets. This past fall we culled an older ewe that twice had issues birthing her triplets.

Lilly

So, what happened. Lilly was 7 years old. She had a calf in 2014 and she had a calf in 2015. She hasn’t had one since. After more than seven months with the bull this year, she was still cycling. We had to let her go. She was consuming massive amounts of grass and hay and not doing her part to ensure our small enterprise would continue. Perhaps there were extra steps we could have taken to get her to stand for the bull. Or perhaps she had ovarian cysts and could have been treated by the vet but that comes with the possibility of recurrence. I’m sure I will continue to doubt my decision to cull her from the herd. But I stand firm in that it was a decision that had to be made. I had no idea it would be so hard.

I was in tears and indeed am tearing up now at the loss of this animal. We hold in our mind the purpose of every animal on our homestead. Each contributes to the whole process of sustainability and diversity on our farm. They must contribute or they must go. At this point I’m pretty sure I’m never going to get used to losing my milk cows. I can’t help but bond with them. And I will cry each time their life with us is over whatever the reason.

I hope this isn’t too much of a downer but I feel it is important to honor her life and to share our feelings as we move forward on the homestead. It’s not always roses and butterflies. Thank you for your patience with me as I grieve a little.

One way I want to honor her is to share the wonderfulness of her breed and why we chose these cows.

The Normande Cow Breed

It all started because I like to drink milk but did not want pasteurized milk. And cheesemaking has always been a passion of mine since I first learned how to make it back in 1993. The original plan was for one or two cows. So, we researched and researched. We wanted the milk but also knew to make that happen there would be a calf every year. That means we needed good beef as well. Because our values revolve around living close to and in harmony with nature, we wanted a breed that would do well on pasture without supplemental feed.

Finally, we purchased our first cows in the fall of 2011. We bought two for milking and one for beef. I was already enamored with their unique coloring. And as we worked with them, I fell even more in love. Almost all cows have a deeply peaceful quality about them. This breed takes that quality to the next level. It was a defining moment for us in the evolution of our business aspirations. These cows were to become the centerpiece of our homestead.

History

As the name implies, the breed comes from Normandy, a North–Western region of France. Since Normandy is famous for its Viking influence, many people believe that the breed descended from the cattle the Vikings imported. For over 1,000 years these cattle evolved into a dual-purpose breed to meet the milk and meat needs of the residents of Northwestern France.

During the Allied Invasion of Normandy beginning on June 6, 1944 through July 1944, the breed was nearly wiped out. But today they are alive and well. As of 5 years ago there were about 3 million Normande cattle grazing on French pastures, with large numbers in the regions of Normandy, Brittany, and Maine, as well as in the Ardennes and the Pyrenees. Although popular for their beef, they are primarily milk producers.

The Colors

Have I mentioned that these are gorgeous cows? They have distinctive eye patches. There are three characteristic coat colors sometimes referred to as the three Bs: Blanc (white), Blond (fawn or red) and Brindled (dark brown). It’s kind of hard to describe so I’ll put pictures in the post on the website. Please check them out. I believe I mentioned, they are gorgeous.

The arrangements of colors are really varied: Blanc is mostly white, sometimes called quail. The coat is scattered with very small patches of color; The Blond coat has one big fawn or red patch covering almost the entire cow’s body. The belly and head are white and there are those circles around the eyes with all of these coats I’m describing. The brindle is similar to the blond but the large patch is dark brown to black.

Normande Around the World

The breed has been exported to many different countries, and has thrived in all of them. They adapt well to a wide range of climates. In South America, central Europe, Western Europe, Asia and North America the breed has shown its versatility.

While having been exported worldwide, they received their greatest acceptance in South America where they were introduced in the 1890s. Total numbers there now exceed 4 million purebred plus countless Normandy cross breeds. Columbia alone has 1.6 million purebreds with the rest mainly in Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay. They are also growing in countries such as the US, Mexico, Madagascar, Belgium, Switzerland, Great Britain and Ireland.

Milk and Cheese

Their milk has about 3.5% protein and 4.4% fat, with a 4.2% butterfat content. The reason their milk is so suitable for cheesemaking is because of high levels of Beta Casein and Kappa Casein. We’ll get into that more at a later date.

In France, the Normande is associated with the production of famous cheeses such as Camembert de Normandie, Livarot and Pont Leveque (pone liveck). These are all moist, soft, creamy, surface-ripened cheeses. In France, to legally carry the official name the cheese must meet certain requirements for manufacturing location, type of cow, raw and/or pasteurized milk, and specific processes. The official Camembert de Normande is made entirely from raw milk from the Normande breed grazed in the Normandy region of Northwestern France. There are lots and lots of other cheeses from the Normandy region of France, but the three I mentioned require the use of milk from the Normande breed of cow.

A Sustainable Breed for a Sustainable Agriculture.

Since Normandy cattle have been raised on grass only for many centuries, their grazing ability is highly commended.

Long, damp cold muddy French winters and simple forged diets have prepared Normandes for the worst. As I mentioned, today Normandes have spread from the Andes to the tropical coastlines of South America to Ireland and Canada. Because the Normande has not been selected solely on one character, it has retained exceptional qualities often lost by specialized breeding. Highly desirable qualities such as fertility, calving ease, excellent feet and legs and overall heartiness are prominent. Their thick, curly winter hair ensures good protection against the cold. The eye rings are effective against the sun in the summer. The breed also shows remarkable docility which makes the handling of bulls very easy, though you always watch your back. Finally, raised on grass for centuries, the Normandy shows outstanding grazing ability and that works for us.

Crème Fraîche Recipe

Crème fraîche is similar to sour cream. While sour cream and crème fraîche are both used to add richness and tangy flavor, they are not the same thing. And is it worth taking the extra time to make your own crème fraîche? I’m going to say absolutely, yes, depending on the use.

How They’re Made

Sour cream is made by adding lactic acid culture to heavy cream and sometimes milk to thicken and sour it. In France, crème fraîche was traditionally made from unpasteurized cream that naturally contained the right bacteria to thicken it. Since our cream is pasteurized here in the US, crème fraîche is now made by adding a fermenting agent with bacteria to heavy cream. So, today’s recipe will be the Americanized version of crème fraîche.

The Differences Between Sour Cream & Crème Fraîche

Sour cream has a fat content of about 20% and may include ingredients like gelatin, rennin, and vegetable enzymes to stabilize it and make it thicker.

Crème fraîche has a fat content of about 30% and does not contain any added thickeners. Crème fraîche is thicker, has a richer flavor, and is less tangy than sour cream.

When to Use Crème Fraîche?

Use it anywhere you would use sour cream. Because sour cream has less fat but more protein, simmering or boiling it will result in curdling. Crème fraîche is a better choice for sauces or soups.

If using in a salad or as a topping, they’re pretty much interchangeable and the choice is yours — some people like the tanginess of sour cream, while others like the richness of crème fraîche.

What You Need

2 cups heavy cream

3 tablespoons cultured buttermilk

What to Do

In a glass jar, combine the buttermilk with the heavy cream.

Cover the jar tightly with cheesecloth or other breathable material. Let sit at room temperature (70 to 75 degrees) for 24 hours.

Remove cloth, stir. It will be thick but will get thicker. Screw on a lid, and refrigerate for another 24 hours before using.
