there are two cakes in a place where free food is expected (cafeteria, breakroom, shared kitchen, etc). both cakes look equally appetizing to you. one cake has "this cake is not poisonous" written on top in icing, the other has no writing on it.

So I'm on of those people who enjoys a good "art style challenge" videos. Looking through a lot of different "styles" of art, I've noticed a sort of spectrum that slides between two points.
Stylization and Rendering.
I've made this handy blob to to visualize this spectrum.
Tumblr media
Stylization to me is the design of something using shape language, proportions, details vs simplicity, and exaggeration or lack thereof. It slides between Semi Realism: being more based on reality, Semi Abstract : based more on shape and exaggeration, and Stylized: having a basis in reality but takes artistic liberties to emphasize on certain aspects/feelings.
Tumblr media
Rendering to me is the application of form or lack of on a design. Lighting (shade, highlights, rim light), textures, patterns, and lines (there or not). Leaning more graphic or more form based.
No or Low Rendering leans into being graphic. Stylized being some lighting to get an idea of form but not too much to clutter the scene or slow down production. Hight Render leaning on form.
Tumblr media
Here are some examples of how different visual stories fit on the scale.
Tumblr media
Here you can have stylized character designs with different scales of rendering. Stylization is mostly seen in Japanese Anime and those inspired by Disney.
Tumblr media
Same with Semi Abstract designs with different rendering styles. Semi Abstract comes from the UPA shorts from the 50s that really pushed into exaggerated shape language.
Tumblr media
Semi Realistic designs can change with how you render them. Semi Realism is based more on reality.
Tumblr media
Works the other way around with Rendering.
You can have the same amount of rendering but take in a story way different with how a character is designed. Most high rendering is seen in high budget 3D animated features because it would take forever to ask an artist to render this much detail at 24 frames per second. And we already torture animators as is.
Tumblr media
Gradient rendering is seen mostly in webcomics, Korean comics, and illustrated books. Though with Klaus we are starting to see it more in animation.
Tumblr media
Cel Shading is most common in 2D animated series and movies. Gives it more form and gets the point across.
Tumblr media
Low or No Rendering becomes more graphic and emphasizes on color and design.
Tumblr media
I will use Donna from my comic Legend Catcher as an example.
Tumblr media
Same design, different ways to render.
Tumblr media
Same amount of rendering, different ways to stylize.
Tumblr media
This was just some things to think about when looking at and creating art.
Tumblr media
If you wanna check out the process in how I drew all these, check out my Ko-Fi for the video at https://www.ko-fi.com/tessshadowcast
Just some fun thoughts I had. If there are other points to make, let me know!

Ok ok I saw an ASAP Science video on this once and now I’m curious
Explanation under the cut!
If you said 11am…
You have the time-moving perception of time, so you see yourself as stagnant, and time moves through you.
Because time is moving past you, the future is always coming closer. So, if the meeting is moved forward, it is coming closer to you, which makes it sooner.
If you said 1pm…
You have the ego-moving perception of time, so you see yourself moving forward through time.
Because you are moving through time, the future is always far away. So, if the meeting is moved forward in time, it is going ahead in the future, which makes it later.

Maybe a wild off-base theory but what if the GO God didn't exist? That could be some beautiful commentary.
I just thought of how Aziraphale has referred to God as she/her (in the show anyway) and how Crowley has referred to God as they/them, and how that would actually align to my personal HC that God appears differently to everyone based on their perception of her/them/him/the world at large.
Then I thought of my own perspective on the actual character of God in our society, as someone who is atheistic/agnostic, and how this figure was created and how religion in general means such different things to different people and how this drives people's behaviors despite maybe not even being true. And then I thought about how the Metatron is like, supposedly the voice of God, but then supposedly so are certain humans like alleged prophets and also people who own private jets and shit while other human beings starve on the streets. Like, what if the Voice of God we hear in S1 was just an imagined personality (by Adam, who in the books quickly knows everything about Crowley and Aziraphale?) narrating the general POV?
Like that would just speak a lot to the characters acting completely of their own motivation, but disguising it through a character that doesn't even exist, and using that to collectively justify whatever awful actions they already wanted to take. Which (from my perspective) just mirrors humans so beautifully (beautifully as in "beautiful and terrible as the morning and night").
HOWEVER -- we do see literal Satan appear in GOS1. And we appear to see God speak to Job in GOS2. And I don't think there's really enough time to make "God isn't real" a meaningful plot in GOS3, so that's probably not a thing.
But I have always thought and still think that whatever Heaven is doing has a strong possibility of being divorced from whatever God actually wanted. Or maybe She just put all the pieces into place and let them go at it to see what would happen. Or maybe God really did command most of the death and destruction and mayhem against the human race and is supposed to be an awful character, IDK. 🤷‍♀️
But that was a fun thought experiment in free will and self-determination.

ship of theseus but for comics, if you replace 90% of a character can it still be called that character? Or if you have a team and adapt that team but remove or change 90% of said team can it be an adaptation?

Fatphobics, what are you actually worried about happening if fat people are considered more attractive?
A lot of concern about fat people being considered attractive seems to stem from the nether regions of fatphobics. If you scratch the surface of a health concern argument, it usually devolves into a variant of "but I don't find fat people attractive and don't think I should have to."
Let's call these folks fatphobic thinophiles because not only do they express attraction to thin people, but act disturbed by the existence of fat people.
Suppose we wake up tomorrow with a flipped beauty standard where, in general, fatter people are considered more attractive than thinner people. What bad things are fatphobic thinophiles afraid of happening that will credibly alter their lives for the worse?
Body size is nearly as heritable as height and very hard to change in the long run. After beauty standards flip there may be a small change in average body size upwards as, say, people stop smoking and engaging in other behaviors that are intended to suppress appetite. But, overall, the unreformed thinophile's dating pool will not decrease very much in size.
So---what are fatphobic thinophiles actually worried about happening if fat people are considered more attractive?
I really want to know.
-ArteToLife
P. S. Fat folks and non-fatphobic allies, I'm also interested in your theories.

I think Sisko would have a very hard time on Voyager. His mind would go to the Borg long before they even have contact and Wolf 359 trauma would make it harder for him to deal with this. The way Miles was so specifically unhappy to be on DS9, the Cardassian station of all places, with his history.
Also one of the biggest strengths - that Ransom was clearly missing - is Janeway's science background. I think we also see it a bit in Tom, who idolizes the good old days. The exploration of it all. Explore new things without a safety net. When the DS9 crew ventured in the Gamma Quadrant, there was always a way back home. There is lots to talk about right there.
The DS9 character to absolutely thrive on Voyager would be Dax, well, Jadzia Dax specifically. Wise and curious, good combo. But Dax would also feel a new kind of fear, because Trill is so far away, no new host easily reachable. Could this be the end? Fascinating.
Janeway on DS9 would climb up the walls. To be stationary. She would use every chance she gets to get into the Gamma Quadrant. If she would get the whole Emissary storyline as well, I think she would be more open in some ways (so ready to embrace how these unknown aliens perceive time) and rejecting others (dealing with Winn Adami???? oh boy).
Ooh I love this thought experiment!
His mind would go to the Borg long before they even have contact and Wolf 359 trauma would make it harder for him to deal with this.
Honestly, I agree with this, I noted in a previous post that actually, Sisko and Janeway were positioned very well because their postings don’t really interact with their traumas much. The Borg were barely anything on DS9, and Janeway only had to deal with Seska, who was laser-focused on Chakotay.
A good thing… because Seska didn’t really trigger Janeway’s Cardassian triggers ala Miles.
Also one of the biggest strengths - that Ransom was clearly missing - is Janeway’s science background.
If I remember right Ransom doesn’t like direct confrontation. His style is hide and run, from what I remember all he’s ever commanded were small science vessels.
I suspect that Sisko would react to Ransom and his crew almost exactly how Janeway reacted to Ransom.
With even less pushback, because when he did the same thing with Eddington he had little pushback. Dax was even in full support of Sisko’s actions.
The DS9 character to absolutely thrive on Voyager would be Dax, well, Jadzia Dax specifically. Wise and curious, good combo
This is true! I kind of wish there was either a Dax or Garak-like character on Voyager to mix things up as Seven did. Speaking of Seven of Nine… unfortunately, I don’t and can’t see how Seven would survive beyond the first episode on a Sisko-led Voyager.
Unless maybe Dax talks him out of it? Dax would make the case that Seven would be the ‘local knowledge’ as they traverse Borg space.
Sisko would be a lot harder on Seven because of his trauma.
But because of Jake, Sisko always has a clear motive to get back to the Alpha Quadrant. It’s not just for the crew but because of his son. He doesn’t want to miss the life of his son, this would be a more bittersweet ache for Sisko, I feel.
Unless! Jake was with him during the Maquis hunting mission? On the other hand, I don’t see Sisko wanting to put Jake in danger like that, so soon after Wolf 359.
On the other end, I would love to watch Janeway butting heads with Kira Nerys, initially, because I don’t think Janeway has the same trauma as Miles had but also I don’t think she would love interacting with Cardassians either.
And, knowing the DS9 writers, I feel they would play up Janeway’s Cardassian War Record. Garak would know Janeway’s war record and I bet he would enjoy poking at Janeway.
Janeway would indulge Quark but only to a point.
But also, it would be so interesting for Scientist!Janeway to butt up against Bajoran spirituality and religion, especially if the Wormhole aliens pick her to be their Emissary. Sisko was already (initially) uncomfortable with the role, what more Janeway?
Janeway is diplomatic but her faith is in science. I think in this way, Sisko was more open, especially once he warmed up to Bajor and its cultures. I don’t know if I can see Janeway ever comfortable in the Emissary role.
Janeway vs Kai Winn would be fascinating. They’d both tear at each other with sugar-sweet smiles.
Janeway would also be pushed to make the same decisions as Sisko did in In the Pale Moonlight because just like Sisko, she takes every death personally. And the deaths during the Dominion War were constant.
It would be fascinating to see Janeway in the Siege of AR355 though just to see Janeway in another siege war. She already mentioned on Voyager how devastating that was, in her low-key way.
Saving the Cardassian was a moment that won Janeway back her soul, if not for that moment, I honestly feel Janeway would’ve been lost.
Also, I feel Janeway and the Founder would have An Enemy Mine situation instantly. Janeway would also 100% support all of Nerys’s anti-Gul Dukat moves, she’ll hide it but she will low-key condone it.
Sisko was always contemptuous of Dukat but it was never personal, Sisko had to be driven to the moment of hating Dukat. Since, again, his hate would go towards the Borg more. But for Janeway? It’s a skip towards hating Dukat.
We could also see Janeway in a more casual setting more often, maybe even date. I have a feeling even if Janeway stayed in the Alpha Quadrant, Janeway and Mark Johnson wouldn't have stayed together.

Battle of the Ships
Round 2 Part 4 Poll 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ship of Theseus :
The ship Theseus used to travel back from Crete after slaying the minotaur. Is commemorated and repaired for centuries after.
It's the original ship of Theseus! ...or is it, anymore? If it is, what makes it so? And if it isn't, when did it stop being that?
Temeraire :
"He's a uuhhhhhhh dragon. Almost guaranteed to not be qualified, but I figured I'd take a shot for him; forgive me for the time-wasting.
While he's more of a 'plane' technically I guess, his captain is a navy captain, he's named after the original ship 'Temeraire', and something like 75% at least of the books takes place on/around navy ships... Plus he likes swimming so I guess in a way he's a sea-faring vessel??
As far as looks go; big-ass black dragon."
This ship has Opinions and hates racists and Napoleon Bonaparte.

A few weeks ago my friends and I were talking about how our jobs could be turned into paranormal horror movies.
Mine is pretty easy. I work as a cleaner so I spent a lot of time alone in buildings and get into all the dark, dank corners. Places I’ve worked include a catholic school where the teachers had weird shit in their offices and the principal was known to walk around naked where his neighbors could see him, an optician filled with mirrors and you could hear voices in the vents from the apartments over the store, an old private home right next to a graveyard that had been turned into a kindergarden, a huge mansion that was being used as a “club house” for a bunch of rich old men that had a weird round ritualistic room with an altar and thrones in it, and a small office by the sea where seawater filled with plankton, seaweed and occasionally fish would bubble up through the drains in the bathrooms. All of those places had haunted vibes so slap a ghost or demon in any of them with a lone cleaner after dark and you’re good to go.
My friend works as a phone salesman for an airline (not the kind who call other people, but the kind who takes calls from people who want to buy stuff) so her job is ripe for phone based horror like a ghost that communicate though phone calls and maybe even warns of airplane disasters.
My other friend is almost done with their education as a chiropractor. They have access to the rooms where they keep all the cadaver parts at their university, they once brought home a box of real human bones to study, and they suggested that a super creepy start to a horror would be if they had to examine a patient who seemed normal but as they felt around the patient’s body they realized the insides where completely wrong and non-human.
So I pass the thought experiment on to you. How could your job, no matter how mundane, be turned into a paranormal horror movie? (And if you don’t have a job, some other normal part of you life)

I want to test something-
1- When you see this post reblog it from the most recent person to reblog it.
2- say something in the reblog. Not it the tags, actually ad your own text (or image or poll or whatever).
Let's see how long this thread can get.
