Hey y’all experiencing these heat waves or going places that are way hotter than you’re used to: Check your meds to find out whether anything you’re taking can cause heat sensitivity! This includes: heat intolerance (getting overheated very easily), increased sweat production OR impaired sweat production, increased OR reduced thirst, lethargy, reduced alertness, and increased risk of fainting
A lot of very commonly taken medications can cause heat sensitivity, and a lot of people don’t find out about it until they’re wondering why they’re sweating buckets or feeling exhausted after a short time in the heat. Additionally, some common OTC meds like cold and allergy meds, antibiotics, and NSAIDs can cause photosensitivity, which makes you far more prone to burning in the sun.

[Alt text: Meds That May Cause Heat Sensitivity: Mental Health meds (Prozac, Zoloft, Xanax, Klonopin, Cymbalta, Effexor, Elavil, etc) - ADD/ADHD Stimulants (Adderall, Dexedrine, Vyvanse, etc) - Diphenhydramine (Benadryl, ZZZquil) - Blood Pressure (beta blockers, diuretics). This is not an exhaustive list! Please check your own medications, including OTC, for heat-related side effects! Keep hydrated, limit heat exposure, and be safe!] I have to emphasize that the above list is not exhaustive, it presents a handful of examples in a few common categories. Research the meds that you take, especially if they’re similar to any that are listed! If you do take meds that can cause heat sensitivity, be aware that you may have a much harder time handling the heat, and that time spent exposed to high heat puts you at higher risk of developing heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The warning signs of heat exhaustion include headache, racing pulse, heavy breathing, fatigue, nausea, muscle cramps, and light-headedness. If you start to experience these symptoms, get to a cool environment, remove any layers of clothing you can, place cool damp cloths on yourself, take frequent but small sips of water, and monitor your symptoms. If they don’t go away in an hour or they worsen, or you start vomiting, seek medical attention, because they could progress to heat stroke, and that is a life-threatening medical emergency. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. I’m just someone who’s taken many of these meds, some for over a decade, and it wasn’t until I moved to Arizona that a medical professional ever talked to me very specifically about these potential side-effects in a way that made me actually realize I’d been experiencing this. My prescriber is working with me to find some different meds that addresses my needs without making me miserable with side-effects, so if you’re in a similar place, ask what other options there might be for you. Above all, be safe in the heat! Stay hydrated, you need more water than you think, and it’s far better to take frequent small drink!

I love being out in the sunshine but my medicine does not like me being out in the sunshine. The downside? I overheat really easily and can't go anywhere without shade. The upside? I get to wear pretty breezy dresses and an elegant UV protective hat and I have an excuse to lug around a pretty pink parasol everywhere <3

Something not enough people talk about is how physically ill and nauseous you get during hot weather when you’re on antidepressants. Sure doctors will mention you might have a hard time regulating body temperature but they never mention feeling faint and wanting to vomit. Maybe that’s just my reaction though. I’m from MI but grew up primarily in GA and later spent a good number of years in FL, the heat was gross but tolerable as I wasn’t on SSRIs. Move back to MI, heat is no where near as hot consistently (yes we do get days in the 90s though) and feel horribly sick and lightheaded when it’s over 82. It’s weird. In short I hate hot weather, Summer can die in a fire and I want it to be Fall.

I started taking electrolyte pills Saturday (so 3 days ago) and today I strolled about town with my friend for… 3h
Mostly in the sun, 28°C, long-sleeve t-shirt and long jeans, wearing compression stockings
I am surprisingly little exhausted, I feel quite fit/ energetic* actually, and while I’m sweatyAF I didn’t crash once I got into the cool of my residential building
So if you have dysautonomia related to heat exhaustion, look into electrolyte tablets (I don’t mean those to dissolve in a drink, I mean those you swallow like pills)
*probably should mention I’m also in a depression slump currently so maybe the socialising itself was energising as well, ymmv
I’m taking the electrolyte complex tablets/ pills by nutravita

Keeping Cool with MS
Heat sensitivity was one of the first symptoms I had, and it’s the primary one that pointed me in the direction of MS. It’s frustrating because it makes it difficult to be outside, which is an essential part of so many summer activities. I find I’m sensitive to just about anything above 80 degrees, especially if it’s humid, and any rise in my core body temperature at all brings with it increased…

DAE with heat sensitivity dress for it in the summer?
I've been wearing a lot of athleisure but honestly most affordable/cool athleisure I've found is black/grey and I miss colors.
(tmi) honestly the best thing about workout clothes besides being cool is that it's less obvious when I'm sweating before I even get to the destination 🥲 I'm afraid to wear lighter summer-y shirts because like what if I sweat through them and it's obvious?? Does anyone else have that problem? Is there any fabrics that make it better/less obvious?

Mentally Strong
I am still running on empty this week. It is very strange, I walked the furthest I walked on Monday. Wednesday and Thursday I’ve had difficulty standing up and transferring. When I say difficulty, I mean it’s been harder than it’s had been over the previous weeks. It is requiring more energy to get myself up into the standing position. It is more laborious moving my feet. Good MS days and bad…
