Some French Quarter architecture for today. St Ann Street is really a gem for beautiful galleries, balconies, and decorative ironwork. Some of it is period cast iron from the first half of the 19th century, some are mid-20th century attempts to capture the look, and others are modern restorations. After a while, you learn to spot the differences (usually). I thiiiink this is period, or a very good modern restoration. Remember: balconies don't have a connected roof, galleries do. The Hotel de Sagonne, Paris. The hotel was constructed between 1667-1670 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, King Louis XIV’s First Architect. In subsequent years it was enlarged and decorated to a grander scale to show off Mansart’s new social rank as the Count of Sagonne, following his enoblement by the King. The greatest painters and sculptors were commissioned to transform the hotel into something more befitting of a Count. The mansion passed through many hands over the generations until, in the 1980s, the first floor was occupied by the French designer Jacques Garcia. Fingers crossed that this will be our daily view from the bedroom of our new apartment. 🧿🧿 We visited it last week and fell completely in love. It's the interior courtyard view from an early 19th century creole townhouse, the "dependency wing," which is the building with small rooms for servants, enslaved workers, relations that the family didn't want in the grand house, and other bits of unfussy housing. The flat is three rooms knocked together, with all the original brick, wood floors, historic windows, and other period features.
