The Hotel de Sagonne, Paris. The hotel was constructed between 1667-1670 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, King Louis XIV’s First Architect. In subsequent years it was enlarged and decorated to a grander scale to show off Mansart’s new social rank as the Count of Sagonne, following his enoblement by the King. The greatest painters and sculptors were commissioned to transform the hotel into something more befitting of a Count. The mansion passed through many hands over the generations until, in the 1980s, the first floor was occupied by the French designer Jacques Garcia. Marble lace neckerchief carved by French sculptor Louis-Philippe Mouchy (1734-1801), who masterfully created the marble statue in 1781.

The statue was commissioned as a posthumous tribute to the Duke of Montausier, Charles de Sainte-Maure. The nobleman was one of the guardians of the Great Dauphin of France, Louis, son and heir of the Sun King, Louis XIV.

Despite the velvet, this Frenchmen did not live a charmed life. First known as “Eustache Dauger,” he was imprisoned with one warning from King Louis XIV’s minister: should the prisioner's identity be revealed, those privy would be put to death. Held in various prisons from 1669/70 until his death in 1703, the man was buried under the name "Marchioly." Voltaire dubbed him “The Man in the Iron Mask,” though in reality, his mask was made of black velvet and stiffened with whalebone. Affair of the Poisons

In 1679, King Louis XIV established a ‘Chambre Ardente” or a “burning court” made to investigate potential witches that the public believed to be causing poison related deaths. What began as a search for a murder became the “Affair of the Poisons,” one of the largest witch trials in history, taking three times the lives taken by the Salem witch Trials.
