Release Tactics:
Artists have always used tactics to promote or push their new releases or the singles that proceed an album. From releasing a visual, to then introducing remixed or alternate versions of the singles, or discounting the single to give it that extra push when it reaches high momentum. Radio also playing a key role eventually where labels would make a deal with radio stations to play an artists new release every hour during release day. The single release plan and the timeframe in which it would play out was dragged out to keep the excitement around the release. It also managed to allow for more longevity of a single release in particular. Where it didn’t feel like a desperate attempt to attain a high chart position. Streaming then went on to then switch things up and give artists and labels a new way in which to attain a higher chart position or a more hefty first week album sales figure. Here in particular the chase for greater commercial success began to get in the way of the quality of the music being released. Music videos now on most occasion particularly from mainstream artists are released on the same day as the single release. As that will generate a greater streaming figure thus a stronger chance of a higher debut. Here is where preference shifted to getting to the high end of the charts upon release, rather than letting the releases have an organic growth towards getting to the upper end of the charts.
Then gradually we saw artists releasing albums that were hefty in the number of tracks present on the record and on most part that was only so that they could get a bigger first week sales figure and in turn a higher debut. More tracks means more streams, especially when you compare a twenty plus track record to the standard twelve or fifteen track album. Oftentimes those records drag and the added tracks provide nothing of value to the record or its concept. It is just a tactic to achieve greater commercial success. Chris Brown is one of the main ones who has for his past couple of records had more than thirty tracks on a single album and then on top of that later on added a further ten tracks for the deluxe release. All for the purpose of a hefty first week streaming figure. There is nothing wrong with a lengthy record or a double album, as long as each track is of strength and adds to the experience. There are many examples of albums that are phenomenal from head to toe, that feature twenty plus tracks.
When the pandemic hit artists had to find new ways of promoting their music or attaining a higher chart position. So they decided to lower the discount from the usual $0.99 to $0.69 in order to entice more to buy the new singles. Some were doing so immediately upon release, whilst others stuck to introducing the discount a little later on. However it was a tactic used mores by mainstream artists some of which included Ed Sheehan, The Weeknd & BTS to name a few. The latter in particular benefited from the discount the most since they have a dedicated fanbase that go above and beyond to support their idols. Lowering the discount also acted as a tool to further promote mass buying and thus  it was quite the goldmine for BTS. They then discounted each release after that and even now that the pandemic is over have continued to so. It seems that they’ve become dependent on it now. BTS would then release a remixed version, an instrumental and alternate versions all at the same time and on top of a music video, dance videos and all. Doing so from the get go and that in turn enabled them to gain number one singles one after the other.
Others saw how that impacted the performance of a new release and applied that to releases of their own. Nicki Minaj did so with ‘Super Freaky Girl’, applying an instant discount, alternate versions such as a limited longer version released for a small duration during the releasing week. A prompt to push her fans into buying the single and securing a bigger first week figure. Which then resulted in Nicki getting her first solo number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 that she really had been after for a long time now.
So it seems as though the focus has become more on the commercial performance than the quality of music. Thus we don’t have the same level of excitement when it comes to a new release and seeings its growth. Then you have artists curating their singles so that they have the potential to go viral on TikTok. This is now taking away from quality music, and is resulting in music that makes a momentary impact. After that it is forgotten and will not stand the test of time. Focus for a quite a few mainstream artists in particular has drifted from creating great records that’ll last, and has now become all about how to achieve the greatest level of commercial success. If they find the perfect balance where they are able to do that whilst maintaining the quality of their releases then it would be justified. So it isn’t just the pandemic that has given rise to tactics to boost the performance of a new release.

Billboard.com writes about Christina: "The third-place finisher on the sixth season of NBC’s “The Voice” returns a classic to the Hot 100, as her cover of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” debuts at No. 74 (with 72,000 sold). It’s the sixth version of the song to chart: UB40’s reggae take spent seven weeks at No. 1 in 1993; Elvis Presley’s ballad (with the Jordanaires), which brought the song to mainstream pop audiences, reached No. 2 in 1962; and versions by Corey Hart (No. 24, 1987), Al Martino (No. 51, 1970) and Andy Williams (No. 88, 1970) have also hit the Hot 100."

Billboard Philippines Returns; Hot 100, PH Top 20, PH Catalog, and PH Top Social 20 to Make a Comeback
Billboard, a music and entertainment magazine and brand, is back once again in the Philippines this year.
After it ceased operations in 2018, Billboard Philippines has officially been relaunched last October 15, under the new management, Modern Media Group in partnership with Penske Media Corporation.
Billboard PH promised to bring Filipino music to the global scene with their various offerings, such as media channels, including Soundwave, Volumes, and Studios; and music events, such as OPM Fest, Pride Summit, and Live Music Summit, among others.
However, the most anticipated in their return to the Philippine music industry is what they are known about: music charts. As announced on their website, Billboard PH will be publishing Philippines Hot 100, Philippines Top 20, Philippines Catalog, and Philippines Top Social 20, which will surely bring fierce competition amongst local musicians.
These local charts will not only showcase the preferences and tastes of Filipinos in music but also serve as an avenue for discovering new and old gems. Now, let’s take a look at how these music charts will introduce new and old Filipino music to the world.
Philippines Hot 100
This chart is the local counterpart of the renowned Hot 100. It highlights hottest locally consumed music across digital music platforms in the country, such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and YouTube Music, and iTunes.
Top local and international songs are ranked based on localized streaming data, digital downloads, and video plays.
Philippines Top 20
Unlike the Hot 100, this chart focuses on local music that are to go to by Filipinos. It recognizes songs that are popular and successful across digital music platforms in the country.
Similar to Hot 100, it aggregates rank based on localized data from Spotify, YouTube and YouTube Music, Apple Music, and iTunes.
Philippines Catalog
Paying homage to classics, this chart will bring local songs that are timeless in the music scene.
It will serve as a platform for music that has been released more than three years ago but are still presently making noises across digital music platforms.
Philippines Top Social 20
When music is effective, it translates to following across social media platforms. This chart is the counterpart of the renowned Social 50 chart. It looks at the most followed and most talked about music artists across different social media platforms (Facebook, X, Wikipedia, etc.).
If this chart follows the same method as the Social 50 chart, it will rank music artists based on the following: Followers, mentions, and retweets on X; People Talking About This (PTAT) and likes on Facebook; and Wikipedia views.
However, in this ranking, Social 50 considers the following criteria: addition of fans (60%), views or plays (30%), and reaction (10%).
The relaunch of Billboard PH is a significant step in promoting and supporting local artists, offering them an avenue to showcase Filipino music. With these charts, local artists will be able to gain more exposure and recognition, while fans can stay updated on what’s latest in the local music scene.
